TNT title match set for AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash

A TNT Championship match has been announced for the December 28 AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash episode.

In a bout set up on this week’s Rampage, Samoa Joe is set to defend the TNT Championship against former title holder Wardlow on December 28 in Broomfield, Colorado.

After making quick work of Exodus Prime on Rampage, Wardlow called out Samoa Joe. Joe answered with a promo from backstage. He stated that he would not defend the TNT title in Texas, the site of the December 21 and December 23 AEW Holiday Bash episodes, but would put the belt on the line against Wardlow on the 28th. The match was officially announced later in Friday’s program.

Joe defeated Powerhouse Hobbs and Wardlow in a triple threat match at Full Gear on November 19 to win the TNT title, submitting Hobbs to win the Championship. Joe also currently holds the ROH World Television Championship.

Wardlow vs. Matt Taven TNT title match set for AEW Rampage

Two weeks after making his AEW on-screen debut, Matt Taven will not only have his first match on this Friday’s Rampage but will also have a chance to win a title as he faces TNT Champion Wardlow.

The Kingdom (Taven, Mike Bennett & Maria Kanellis-Bennett) made their surprise debuts on Rampage in Toronto two weeks ago, setting ROH Tag Team Champions FTR in their sights. Wardlow and Samoa Joe helped make the save and now have the new roster additions in their sights.

Wardlow will be looking for the sixth defense of the title and the last since he defeated Brian Cage on the October 5th Dynamite.

After picking up a win over Chris Jericho & Daniel Garcia on Wednesday’s Dynamite, Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta will look to keep the good times (and wins) rolling as they face two more Jericho Appreciation Society members in Matt Menard & Angelo Parker.

Tay Melo will take on Madison Rayne as well.

Here’s the current lineup for this Friday’s live show from Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena:

  • TNT Champion Wardlow defends against Matt Taven
  • Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta vs. Matt Menard & Angelo Parker

Wardlow vs. Brian Cage TNT title match set for AEW Dynamite

Wardlow will be defending the TNT title this Wednesday on Dynamite.

Tony Khan on social media Monday afternoon confirmed a match between Wardlow and Brian Cage. This followed a social media post by Wardlow asking for anyone to step up to him.

Wardlow wrote “I dare someone to challenge me for the TNT title this Wednesday at the anniversary show. Someone remotely close to my level. Just show up, I’ll be waiting.”

Khan confirmed the match, with AEW’s Twitter account posting a video of Cage talking about the challenge. He said that he hasn’t been on AEW television recently because he’s in ROH and elsewhere creating a winning streak so he’ll come back to AEW for the right opportunity. He said the fans have been waiting and there’s no better time than the three-year anniversary to become the new TNT Champion. He said Wardlow is taking the path of least resistance, and that he’s the real competition.

Here is the updated lineup for Wednesday’s Dynamite:

  • Bryan Danielson & Daniel Garcia vs. Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara
  • TNT title: Wardlow vs. Brian Cage
  • MJF vs. Wheeler Yuta
  • Hangman Page vs. Rush
  • Toni Storm, Athena & Willow Nightingale vs. Jamie Hayter, Serena Deeb & Penelope Ford
  • Darby Allin vs. Jay Lethal
  • Luchasaurus in action
  • National Scissoring Day” with The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn

Wardlow ‘still trying to get back on track’ after ‘ruined’ AEW Double or Nothing

In what could be a hybrid work/shoot interview, TNT Champion Wardlow said he’s been trying to get back on track from May’s AEW Double or Nothing where he defeated MJF — a night he said was ruined by the controversy leading up to it and personal issues.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he said the night in which he opened the pay-per-view with his big win over MJF “should be considered on the best nights of my life and it really wasn’t.”

Wardlow won in a quick squash over his former storyline boss, earning his contractual freedom. MJF actually appearing at the event was in question throughout the weekend as his own real life relationship with Tony Khan was brought into the spotlight.

Wardlow said he took issue with the circus surrounding the situation.

“Everything that was going on with Max at the time and then in my life personally…just nothing was going right and it’s kind of sad that everything built up to this big night and there was so much that ruined it,” he said, “All the crap with Max and everything he was pulling.”

Wardlow said he showed up that Sunday not knowing if he was still scheduled. While he said there’s more he could say and that the outcome was “amazing,” he “really didn’t ever have the opportunity to enjoy it.”

Since that night, Wardlow has wrestled just seven times (once outside AEW) but did win the TNT title along the way, defeating Scorpio Sky in July. Since then, he has three successful title defenses including a quick one last Friday against Ryan Nemeth.

Even with the success, he said things aren’t as great as he would have hoped.

“I feel like ever since that night (DoN), things have kind of been just off and I feel like I’m still trying to get back on track ever since that night and we’ll get there,” he said. “But it is what it is, in this in life and in this business, not everything goes perfectly.”

After his trios match with FTR against Jay Lethal & the Motor City Machine Guns this Sunday at All Out, he wants to re-focus on the TNT title, saying he’s ready for “real competition” and can do more than just squash matches.

Wardlow vs. Ryan Nemeth TNT title match added to AEW Rampage

A Wardlow vs. Ryan Nemeth TNT Championship match, a mixed tag bout, and a promo segment have been added to the August 26 AEW Rampage.

Wardlow will defend the TNT title against Nemeth in what was announced as an open challenge during Wednesday’s Dynamite.

In mixed tag team action, Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo will team against Ortiz and Ruby Soho in a bout set up on last week’s Rampage.

TBS Champion Jade Cargill will speak on Friday’s Rampage in another new segment announced during Dynamite.

Already set for Friday’s episode are a Claudio Castagnoli vs. Dustin Rhodes ROH World title match, plus the World Trios Championship tournament continues with House of Black taking on Dark Order.

Here is Friday’s lineup:

  • ROH World Championship: Claudio Castagnoli (c) vs. Dustin Rhodes
  • TNT Championship: Wardlow (c) vs. Ryan Nemeth
  • AEW World Trios Championship tournament: House of Black (Malakai Black, Buddy Matthews & Brody King) vs. Dark Order (John Silver, Alex Reynolds & Preston “10” Vance)
  • Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo vs. Ortiz & Ruby Soho
  • TBS Champion Jade Cargill speaks

TNT title match added to AEW Fyter Fest

A TNT title match has been added to Wednesday’s Fyter Fest card.

Tony Khan announced this afternoon that Wardlow would be defending the title in his first defense against Orange Cassidy. Additionally, Chris Jericho will appear on Wednesday’s show.

“In 2022 Wardlow’s won the #FaceOfTheRevolution, became #AllElite at #DoubleOrNothing, + became TNT Champion last week! Now @RealWardlow’s issued an open challenge for #AEWDynamite & his opponent is red hot fresh off back-to-back tv wins,” Khan wrote on Twitter.

Wardlow won the TNT title last week on Dynamite, defeating Scorpio Sky. Orange Cassidy defeated Ethan Page at Blood and Guts back on June 29, then followed that up with a win on Rampage last Friday, defeating Tony Nese.

Jericho will appear on the show after orchestrating an attack on Ruby Soho last week on Dynamite, with Jericho instructing Tay Conti to slam a car door on Soho’s hand. This led Soho’s friend Eddie Kingston to challenge Jericho to another match on Rampage. The two will meet at week two of Fyter Fest in a barbed wire death match, with members of the Jericho Apprecation Society locked in a shark cage suspended above the ring.

Here is the updated lineup for week one of Fyter Fest, which kicks off Wednesday:

  • AEW World Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks defend against Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland and Powerhouse Hobbs & Ricky Starks in a three-way match
  • Non-title match: AEW Interim World Champion Jon Moxley vs. Konosuke Takeshita
  • TNT title: Wardlow defends against Orange Cassidy
  • Claudio Castagnoli vs. Jake Hager
  • Serena Deeb vs. Anna Jay
  • Luchasaurus in action
  • Christian Cage speaks
  • Chris Jericho will speak

Wardlow wins TNT Championship on AEW Dynamite

Wardlow is the new TNT Champion.

He defeated Scorpio Sky on tonight’s Dynamite in a street fight to win the TNT Championship for the first time. The finish came when Wardlow dispatched members of American Top Team out of the ring. Scorpio used this as a distraction, striking Wardlow with the TNT title for a nearfall. Wardlow kicked out and escaped a TKO attempt by Sky, hitting the Powerbomb Symphony for the eventual win.

Sky’s run as TNT Champion ends after 70 days, defeating Sammy Guevara on the April 15 edition of Dynamite.

The match was set up on last week’s Dynamite, where Wardlow promised he would win the title, not caring about the stipulation or the potential for American Top Team to interfere.

In the weeks since beating MJF at Double or Nothing, Wardlow had been feuding with MJF’s lawyer Mark Sterling, which led to a 20-on-1 handicap match against Sterling’s plaintiffs. After Wardlow quickly took care of the plaintiffs, he made clear that his next target was the TNT Championship.

Scorpio Sky vs. Wardlow TNT title street fight set for next week’s AEW Dynamite

A street fight for the TNT Championship has been announced for next week’s AEW Dynamite.

Scorpio Sky will put the title on the line against Wardlow in a match set up during a backstage interview with the two competitors on this week’s Dynamite.

Tony Schiavone conducted an interview between Sky and Wardlow, with the two agreeing to no physicality during the segment. Sky said that he holds the TNT title for a reason, while Wardlow said that he did not care about Sky’s American Top Team crew, and will win the title.

After defeating MJF in a match at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view on May 29, Wardlow followed up with a quick win over JD Drake on the June 1 Dynamite, then won a 20-on-1 match against Mark Sterling’s plaintiffs at Dynamite: Road Rager on June 15.

The TNT title street fight is the only match announced so far for next week’s show.

The lineup:

AEW Dynamite, Wednesday, July 6 —

  • TNT Championship street fight: Scorpio Sky (c) vs. Wardlow
