Rey Fenix wins Cruiserweight Championship at AAA Noche de Los Grandes

Rey Fenix has won the Cruiserweight Championship at AAA Noche de los Grandes.

For the past few weeks, Fenix and Laredo Kid have been actively feuding in AAA. Despite Fenix’s victory over Kid earlier this month, Kid managed to retain his title against Fenix last week through the use of a low blow.

However, shortly after, it was announced that Kid would defend his title against Fenix at AAA Noche de los Grandes. In the opening match of the May 30, 2026 edition of Noche de los Grandes, Fenix defeated Kid and won the title.

The two engaged in an extremely closely fought battle. While Fenix blocked an initial low blow from Kid, he later received one when the referee was distracted by an exposed turnbuckle. However, Fenix still managed to continue the match.

The closing moments of the bout saw Fenix put Laredo Kid away with a Mexican Muscle Buster to become the new AAA World Cruiserweight Champion. Kid held the title since December 2024. Fenix had previously held the title from 2022 to 2023 before having to relinquish it. The title win at Noche de los Grandes also marked Fenix’s first singles title win since leaving AEW in 2025.

Four WWE tag teams that could reinvigorate their divisions | Opinion

WWE has reportedly been discussing an overhaul of the tag team division following recent talent cuts, seemingly intensified after the departures of the Motor City Machine Guns and the New Day, two instrumental tag teams in the last decade+.

Their exits, particularly Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, left noticeable gaps in star power in the tag team division.

WWE already has several potential tag teams in place that could help re-shape both the men’s and women’s tag divisions. Let’s take a look.

Lainey Reid & Fallon Henley

Fatal Influence made a statement debut on the April 24 edition of WWE SmackDown. Led by Jacy Jayne, the stable attacked during Brie Bella and Paige’s Women’s Tag Team Title defense against Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair.

Jayne confronted Rhea Ripley later that same night and they squared off in an impromptu singles match. Her extensive time on the NXT roster has familiarized her with fans. Meanwhile, Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley’s pairing has the potential to take over the division as their presentation and chemistry as a team could evolve to strengthen themselves as challengers for tag team gold.

Additionally, it would prove beneficial especially at a time when the division is in need of newer, long-term teams beyond temporary and outdated pairings.

Rey Mysterio & Rey Fenix

While not an official tag team, Mysterio and Fenix’s union has proven to be entertaining and charismatic in previous matches. The two share and complement each other’s wrestling styles.

Following Mysterio’s injury earlier this year, he participated in the ladder match at WrestleMania for the Intercontinental Title. Despite still showcasing in-ring agility that defined his early years, the new AAA general manager could benefit from a tag team alliance with Fenix.

Fenix recently teased the pursuit of the Intercontinental Championship, currently held by his brother Penta. He remains a fan favorite, but has yet to win a title in the company. WWE could utilize the tag team momentum to give him his first championship win. Simultaneously teaming up with someone of Mysterio’s stature would permit the veteran to take fewer bumps and still continue a prominent on-screen presence.

The Creed Brothers

Brutus and Julian Creed were dominant and athletically impressive on NXT. They joined the Raw roster in 2023 and shortly after, won a tag team turmoil match to contend for the undisputed Tag Team Titles.

Barely a year later, they joined forces with Chad Gable but ultimately lost their identity as a tag team. Earlier this month, they were introduced as Bruto Credo and Julio Credo (Los Americanos Hermanos), joining the Original El Grande Americano in his battle against Los Americanos.

If the main roster audience is introduced to their former versions portrayed on NXT, they have potential to establish themselves as one of WWE’s finest tag teams. Their combination of amateur wrestling with intense in-ring athleticism already has sturdy credibility already built in.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria

Bayley’s hard fought battle to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles has not been fruitful for more than a year now. Becky Lynch replaced her to team up with Lyra Valkyria at WrestleMania 41 to win the championship.

This year, Bayley and Valkyria competed in a fatal four-way match for the titles again, but came up short. Despite the losses, the pairing has showcased a balanced chemistry with Bayley’s veteran leadership and Valkyria’s rising star momentum.

Bayley’s influence on women’s wrestling has extended beyond WWE, particularly through the Lodestone Wrestling Seminars.

WWE has lacked consistent tag teams in the women’s division. Most have stemmed from mutual convenience or short-term storylines, case in point, Paige’s return to replace Nikki Bella.

Cruiserweight title match set for next AAA on Fox episode

A Cruiserweight championship match has been announced for the next AAA on Fox episode.

For several weeks now, WWE’s Rey Fenix has been in a feud with Laredo Kid for his AAA Cruiserweight championship.

Now, finally, after weeks of feuding, a title match has been set between the two. Next week on the May 23, 2026 episode of AAA on Fox, Fenix will face Kid for the Cruiserweight title.

Kid has held the championship since December 2024. Fenix is himself a former AAA World Cruiserweight Champion and held the belt for over 390 days before vacating the title.

A few weeks ago, on the May 5, 2026, episode of AAA on Fox, Fenix had defeated Kid in a non-title match, prompting the promotion to schedule the two this time with the title on the line.

Chasing the Cruiserweight title on AAA, Fenix had recently also expressed his desire to go after his brother Penta’s Intercontinental Championship on WWE RAW.

AAA on Fox next week lineup | May 23, 2026

As of now, only one match has been announced for the May 23, 2026 episode of AAA on Fox.

  • Rey Fenix vs. Laredo Kid for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship

Rey Fenix match announced as updated AAA lineup on Fox episode

Rey Fenix is set to tag with La Parka on the upcoming episode of AAA on Fox.

Last week, AAA announced its lineup for its April 25th episode. While La Catalina is set for an interview, El Grande Americano will team up with Texano Jr. and face the duo of El Mesias & Mecha Wolf.

On the same episode, WWE’s Fenix was also announced to compete. Now, just hours before the April 25th episode, Fenix has been revealed to be teaming up with La Parka.

Fenix and La Parka will team up to take on Money Machine (Garra de Oro & Colmillo de Plata). On the April 25 AAA episode on Fox, Marisela Pena Roldan is also set to decide Dorian Roldan’s fate as the new AAA general manager.

The first few matches and segments for the upcoming April 25th episode of AAA on Fox have now been announced.

Moments after the April 18 episode of AAA on Fox, after WWE WrestleMania 42, AAA announced the lineup for next week’s April 25 episode.

WWE’s Rey Fenix is scheduled to be in action against an unnamed opponent, while Texano Jr. is set to return and team up with El Grande Americano and face the duo of El Mesias and Mecha Wolf. Texano Jr. has not wrestled for the promotion since October 2024.

Former CMLL wrestler and AAA’s newest addition, La Catalina, is scheduled for an interview, while Dorian Roldan awaits to hear the decision on becoming the new AAA General Manager.

The April 18 episode announced that El Grande Americano II and El Grande Americano will sign their mask vs. mask match contract on the May 2 AAA on Fox episode.

Rey Fenix addresses eventual Lucha Bros WWE reunion: It’s going to be the right moment we deserve

WWE fans were introduced to Rey Fenix in March last year not too long after his brother, Penta, arrived on the WWE main roster.

In a recent interview with RRBG Inc (seen below), Fenix discussed the possibility of eventually reuniting the Lucha Bros in WWE, emphasizing the importance of the two getting the opportunity to initially demonstrate their talents as individual in-ring competitors.

“I see it this way: it’s not bad. Obviously, I miss fighting with my brother, but it’s a good opportunity to show who we are individually,” Fenix said. “I’ve worked with Je’Von Evans, I’ve worked with Andrade when he was there, I’m working with Sami Zayn, I’ve worked with Rey (Mysterio) at recent AAA events. I think it’s a good opportunity for us as wrestlers and for the public to see something different.”

“And believe me, they know that people are waiting for the Lucha Bros, and the Lucha Bros are waiting for the moment. But something that wrestling and this sport have taught me is patience. It’s going to be the right moment that the Lucha Bros deserve.”

“It’s not that we don’t deserve it and you don’t deserve to see the Lucha Bros today, but I know that when the moment gets there is the right moment, and it’s going to be the right moment.”

A reunion for the two almost happened in AAA in late-2025. They were scheduled to face Dominik Mysterio & El Grande Americano at AAA Guerra de Titanes but a shoulder injury the month earlier left Penta medically unfit to compete. Rey Mysterio stepped in as a replacement.

Trick Williams officially joins WWE SmackDown roster, first match set

Two-time NXT champion Trick Williams officially joined the WWE SmackDown roster on the first show of the new year

Williams made sporadic appearances on both Raw and SmackDown in 2025, most recently one week ago when he declared himself a free agent — a period that lasted only seven days.

Sami Zayn was cutting a promo in the ring on SmackDown, proclaiming his pursuit of the WWE Championship, when Williams interrupted. Williams announced that he was now a SmackDown wrestler and that he too would be aiming for the WWE title

Zayn put Williams over, but warned him he had “yet to be humbled.”

Williams then complained about Zayn’s behavior to GM Nick Aldis backstage, interrupting a conversation between the SmackDown general manager and Rey Fenix. The two wrestlers insulted each other and Aldis booked a match between the two of them for next week’s show.

A former NFL hopeful, Williams began his wrestling training in 2018 with Combat Zone Wrestling. He signed his WWE developmental contract in 2021 and quickly formed an alliance with Carmelo Hayes, who is now the WWE United States championship.

Following a break-up and feud with Hayes, Williams went on to win two NXT Championships in addition to his NXT North American Championship. He was also TNA World Champion for several months in 2025, losing the belt to Mike Santana at Bound for Glory in October.

Lucha Brothers reunite, issue challenge for AAA Guerra de Titanes

The Lucha Brothers are back, and are looking for a challenge.

During Saturday’s AAA tapings in Mexico City, Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano were in the ring when suddenly they were interrupted by Rey Fenix and Penta, who called out both men and issued the challenge for Guerra de Titantes, which takes place on December 20. Mysterio accepted on their behalf, setting up a giant tag team match.

Although the two frequently teamed together previously in AAA, AEW, and elsewhere, Penta and Rey Fenix have yet to team up under the WWE umbrella. Penta has been a fixture on the Raw brand, while his brother has been wrestling on SmackDown.

Another match was made for Guerra de Titantes on Saturday. After Psycho Circus (Psycho Clown, Murder Clown, Pagano, and Dave the Clown) were victorious against El Ojo, Bo Dallas appeared in a taped promo. He said that the Wyatt Sicks had accepted their invitation and would introduce them to a carnival of carnage at Guerra de Titantes. The last several months have seen the Wyatts attack Psycho Clown & Pagano after their matches.

Andrade reflects on teaming with Rey Fenix in WWE, dream matches & more

Andrade took part in a Q&A session on Instagram recently.

He was asked about teaming with Rey Fenix on WWE SmackDown before being released from WWE. Andrade answered that the two became like brothers and were always brainstorming new ideas.

Andrade wrote about Fenix:

This dude brought out my angel. When we were wrestling, we were always chatting about stories and where we’d go eat after. We were always chill and brainstorming new ideas. We became great bros.

Andrade was also asked to name his five dream opponents. However, he was only able to keep his list down to seven, answering:

“Hulk Hogan, Eddie Guerrero, Ric Flair, Will Ospreay, Roman, El Santo, Inoki”

He was also asked if he’s friends with Mistico, and responded that he’s friends with multiple people who have portrayed the character:

“I’ve been friends with the previous Místico (@cintadeoro) — we built a great friendship in WWE, and he helped me get to SmackDown.
I’m friends with the original Místico, the first Sin Cara (@caristico_official). He was my mentor in the Gran Alternativa tournament and supported me early on when I was LA SOMBRA in CMLL.
I’m also friends with Místico 2, now DRALÍSTICO (@dralisticooficial). We have a great friendship — he’s like a brother.
I’ve had great adventures with all three of them. Great people.”

Asked about how hard Ultimo Guerrero chops, Andrade responded:

“It depends! Sometimes it’s like an 8, and when he’s mad it’s almost a 9.
Other times it’s a 7.
He hits hard”

Asked about why he doesn’t wear a mask anymore, he answered:

“Because I’m handsome! Just kidding, it’s heavy!!”

Andrade was released by WWE in September, reportedly due to multiple Wellness Policy violations. He returned to AEW on October 1, aligning with the Don Callis Family, but has not been back on AEW programming since. It’s believed that TKO are claiming Andrade should be under a one-year non-compete clause as a result of him being fired for due cause.

Andrade’s contractual status with AEW and the details regarding his release from WWE was addressed by Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on the most recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio.

Meltzer said on the show:

“There may be some people don’t have it in there but it is standard in the contracts and he certainly had it in there that if you’re fired for just cause they can hold you for a year. I would say I don’t anticipate it being a year, but it’s not going to be a week either.”

Number one contender’s match added to WWE SmackDown

A tag team number one contender’s match is among several new additions to the lineup for tonight’s WWE SmackDown.

Tonight, there will be a fatal four-way match featuring Fraxiom, Motor City Machine Guns, Andrade & Rey Fenix, and DIY. The winning team earns a future shot against new WWE Tag Team Champions The Wyatt Sicks, who won the belts from The Street Profits last week.

WWE did not announce when the winners will receive their title shot against Joe Gacy & Dexter Lumis.

A pair of singles matches in the women’s division have also been booked with Charlotte Flair vs. Raquel Rodriguez and Stephanie Vaquer vs. Alba Fyre both set to take place tonight.

Plus, Jacob Fatu will make an appearance as he continues his feud with United States Champion Solo Sikoa, Talla Tonga, JC Mateo, and Tonga Loa.

Frost Bank Center in San Antonio is hosting tonight’s show. Here’s the updated card:

WWE SmackDown (Friday, July 18) —

Show Recap —

Tiffany Stratton and Nia Jax were shown arriving.

There was a Backlash recap video focusing on the SmackDown matches.

Opening segment

Solo Sikoa, Jeff Cobb, and Jacob Fatu entered to kick off SmackDown. They entered to Sikoa’s music and tron. The crowd chanted for Fatu and booed when Sikoa spoke.

Sikoa said Roman Reigns losing the title at WrestleMania ruined everything and he was here to take it all back. It would start with Sikoa winning Money in the Bank and bringing the title back where it belonged.

Fatu grabbed the mic from Sikoa. He already told us he was bringing the U.S. title to the family and would step up to anyone who got in their way. Fatu went to do his catchphrase, but Sikoa interrupted him and mocked him in the process. Sikoa wanted to help Fatu, and the title on his shoulder was proof that Sikoa loved Fatu.

Sikoa wanted to hear Fatu say, “I love you, Solo.” Fatu said it, but not in his usual inflection. Sikoa wanted to hear him say it the way he used to say it. He yanked Fatu by the shoulder to grab his attention, which Fatu didn’t appreciate.

LA Knight’s music hit. They turned their attention to the stage, but Knight appeared from the crowd. He briefly attacked Cobb, but bailed through the crowd before they could kill him.

(They kept referring to Jeff Cobb as “J.C.” during this segment. Sikoa said it repeatedly, and Joe Tessitore called him that, too.)

********

There was a segment backstage with Michin and B-Fab, along with Chelsea Green and her crew. Basically, Green wasn’t happy to learn that the outside parties wouldn’t be at ringside for their triple threat match. Alexa Bliss appeared to wish them luck, and she entered for the opening match. Green threatened to put tariffs on everyone.

Money in the Bank triple threat qualifying match: Alexa Bliss vs. Michin vs. Chelsea Green

Early on, Bliss and Michin repeatedly and easily disposed of Green from the ring. They tried double baseball slide dropkicks and Bliss’ connected, but Green was already down by the time Michin tried hers. Bliss and Mchin were way too proud of themselves, and the time spent celebrating allowed Green to wipe them out with a dive. That led to a break two minutes in.

Green worked over Bliss during a break until Michin dropped her with consecutive German suplexes and a sit-out powerbomb. Michin twerked before hitting both women with a cannonball in the corner. There was a somewhat convoluted triple-down spot that led to a light “This is awesome” chant.

Michin hit Green with Eat Defeat, but Bliss broke up the cover. Bliss hit Michin with Twisted Bliss, but Green yanked Bliss out of the ring. Green hit Michin with Unprettier, so Bliss returned the favour by yanking Michin out of the ring.

Bliss hit Green with Sister Abigail for the pinfall win, which, so far, easily got the biggest pop of the night.

Tessitore called this an outstanding match. It wasn’t.

Match result: Alexa Bliss defeated Chelsea Green and Michin (9:01)

********

Axiom & Nathan Frazer vs. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa

Fraxiom hit a series of dives early on, and one of them sent Ciampa into some fans in the front row. However, Gargano pulled the ropes down on Axiom as he went for a springboard move, and DIY took over from there. That led to a break three minutes into the match.

Believe it or not, the heels maintained control during a break, but Frazer made a hot tag and a comeback as soon as they returned. He hit Gragno with a standing shooting star for two. Gargano avoided a Phoenix splash and hit Frazer out of mid-air with a superkick. DIY hit Frazer with a double-team finisher, but Axiom broke up the cover. Ciampa hit Frazer with Project Ciampa for a nearfall.

Frazer hit Gargano with a superplex, and Axiom superkicked Gargano as Frazer hit a brainbuster, but Ciampa broke up the cover with a running knee strike on Axiom. The crowd got really into this sequence and chanted, “This is awesome.”

Ciampa ripped at Axiom’s mask until Frazer took him out. Axiom then caught Gargano in a cradle for the pinfall win.

— DIY attacked the babyfaces post-match until the Motor City Machine Guns made the save. Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin raised Fraxiom’s hands.

This was fun, and the finish left enough for a potential rematch.

Match result: Fraxiom defeated DIY (11:19)

********

Jax was shown warming up. Naomi could be seen lurking in the background.

The Street Profits congratulated Fraxiom on their win. Montez Ford let them know they earned a tag title match next week. Fraxiom looked forward to it. Angelo Dawkins warned them that they were 100%, and they hoped Fraxiom were too. (Frazer was pumped for the match, while Axiom tried to keep him focused.)

********

R-Truth sit-down interview

Wade Barrett sat down with Truth for a sit-down interview earlier today. Barrett asked about John Cena giving him an AA through a table at the press conference.

Truth said he was under constant pressure—career, family, friends, and bills. But regardless of all that, you could always depend on John Cena. Truth kept spouting Cena’s catchphrases as real-life advice, including “Never give up.”

Barrett told him he was crazy. Barrett said Truth saved Cena from losing the title, and Cena repaid him by putting him through a table. Truth said that wasn’t the real John at the press conference. Truth didn’t want to fight John, but he would beat him to his senses if he had to.

The match was set for Saturday Night’s Main Event: John Cena vs. R-Truth. (Non-title, presumably.)

Truth knew it seemed impossible, but his hero told him to never give up, and he lived by three words: hustle, loyalty and respect. Barrett wished him luck.

(I hate Dumb R-Truth, so I thought this was dumb and a waste of a John Cena match.)

********

Damian Priest challenged Drew McIntyre to a cage match. Priest said the hospital would have to identify McIntyre by his dental records.

Aleister Black vs. Carmelo Hayes (w/The Miz)

Miz pulled Hayes from safety as Black tried a dive. Black looked around like an idiot, acting like he didn’t know where his opponent went, so Hayes wiped him out with a flip dive to take over as they went to break.

(There appears to be a group of young fans who know that chanting, “This is awesome,” is a thing at wrestling shows, because they randomly started doing it as Hayes had the heat during the break.)

Black made a comeback as soon as they returned from break and eventually hit a bridging German suplex for two. A Miz distraction allowed Hayes to get back on offence for a couple of two counts.

Black shoved Hayes into Miz, knocking him off the apron. They did some stuff until Miz attacked Black for the DQ. Stupid.

— Black dropped Miz with his kick post-match, but Hayes decked Black and laid him out with a diving leg drop.

Don’t watch this.

Match result: Aleister Black defeated Carmelo Hayes via disqualification (10:28)

********

Backstage, Bliss told Byron Saxton she wanted to be the first woman to win MITB twice. She left Saxton to approach Charlotte Flair. Bliss wanted to be friends with Flair and noted that Flair took her under her wing in NXT, but Flair claimed she did not remember that.

Giulia left Nick Aldis’ office, and Aldis introduced her as the newest member of the SmackDown roster. (Fans cheered.) Aldis invited Flair into her office to discuss MITB. Before she did, Flair told Bliss to stay out of her way because he didn’t need her.

********

There was a video package for Stratton vs. Jax tonight.

Drew McIntyre promo

McIntyre entered to a mixed reaction. It seemed more positive than negative.

McIntyre addressed Priest’s promo. He said Priest claimed he was in the McIntyre vortex. McIntyre has been stuck in this vortex for over a year, and being stuck there was the only reason Priest was relevant. McIntyre said he beat Priest “clean” in a street fight. Priest was obsessed and jealous.

McIntyre was everything Priest ever wanted to be, but McIntyre was better in every single way, and he would’ve been a grand slam champion if not for Priest. Priest was trying to take out the competition. That’s why he chokeslammed him off a platform and onto the concrete.

McIntyre accepted the cage match (for SNME). McIntyre guaranteed that only one man would walk out of the cage, while the other would leave on a stretcher. (Notably, McIntyre didn’t guarantee who would be leaving on a stretcher.)

As McIntyre left, he crossed paths with Solo Sikoa and crew as Sikoa entered for his match.

This was a typically good McIntyre promo for a feud that should be over.

********

The announcers ran down the card for SNME:

  • Cage match: Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest
  • John Cena vs. R-Truth (non-title)
  • CM Punk & Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker
  • Jey Uso vs. Logan Paul for the World Heavyweight Championship

********

Jeff Cobb accompanied Sikoa to ringside and was officially referred to as JC Mateo.

Money in the Bank triple threat qualifying match: Solo Sikoa (w/JC Mateo & US Champion Jacob Fatu) vs. Jimmy Uso vs. Rey Fénix

Sikoa wanted to form an alliance with Jimmy Uso, but, of course, he did not comply. Fénix wiped out Uso and Sikoa with a flying crossbody outside the ring, but Sikoa caught him moments later with a Spinning Solo in the ring. Even though that’s his finisher, he did not go for a cover. Instead, Sikoa gave Jimmy a Spinning Solo on the announce table, likely knowing it was time to head to commercial break.

After a boring heat segment during a break (Sikoa stalking over both guys), things were meant to pick up when they returned, but there was a big mix-up. Fénix waited forever as Sikoa held him up for a Jimmy dive. Jimmy finally went for the dive, but Fénix ducked. Jimmy caught him in a roll-up, but the referee simply did not count. The crowd chanted for tables.

Twelve minutes into the match, Fatu decided to get involved, but Jimmy superkicked him off the apron. Sikoa gave Jimmy the spike, but Fénix hit Sikoa with a rope-walk punt. Fénix knocked “JC” off the apron, but the distraction allowed Sikoa to hit Fénix with the spike for the pinfall win.

This was no good.

— LA Knight attacked the heels post-match. He held a chair as they surrounded him on the announce table. Aldis entered and made a match between Knight and “JC” right now.

Match result: Solo Sikoa defeated Rey Fénix and Jimmy Uso (13:05)

********

LA Knight vs. JC Mateo (w/Sola Sikoa & US Champion Jacob Fatu)

Making his WWE in-ring debut, Jeff Cobb/JC Mateo wrestled in black jeans, black dress shoes, and a black t-shirt.

This went through a break as the fans watched silently. Knight did not make his comeback immediately after the break. Instead, JC cut him off with an overhead suplex.

Knight fought out of a long bear hug spot as the Toronto Maple Leafs went up 2-0 against the Florida Panthers and finally made his comeback, but JC responded with a spinning back suplex and a standing moonsault for two.

Knight took out Sikoa and Fatu with a dive off the middle rope, but JC caught him with Tour of the Islands for the pinfall win.

Boy, did this ever feel like time-filler. It’s not his fault, but this wasn’t a particularly interesting debut for Cobb, even if he won.

Match result: JC Mateo defeated LA Knight (15:21)

********

Angel Garza met with Santos Escobar backstage. Escobar urged him to find Berto and bring him home. Escobar wanted loyalty from Angel.

Shinsuke Nakamura cut a pre-taped promo on LA Knight and Aleister Black.

Next week on SmackDown:

  • MITB triple threat qualifier: Aleister Black vs. LA Knight vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • MITB triple threat qualifier: Charlotte Flair vs. Giulia vs. Zelina Vega
  • The Street Profits vs. Fraxiom for the Tag Team Championships

********

Jade Cargill warned Tiffany Straatton that she would win her MITB qualifying match and face the winner of tonight’s title match. Stratton said Cargill would never be good enough to cash in on her.

WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton vs. Nia Jax

Early in the match, Jax used a hip attack to drive Stratton’s head into the ring post. It was a good spot, and even Tessitore, who often sounds on the verge of sleep, really sold it big. This led to commercial break two minutes into the match.

Stratton tried fighting back during the break, but Jax hit a middle rope Samoan drop for two. After the break, Jax tried a hip attack again, but Stratton moved, and Jax collided with the ring post. Jax shoved her over the barricade, but Stratton leaped off the barricade and hit a hurricanrana into the post. Stratton followed with a flying crossbody for two. Jax responded with a pop-up Samoan drop and senton for two.

Stratton hit a back handspring elbow and a spinebuster for two. The crowd chanted for Stratton as Jax hit her with consecutive powerbombs. Jax did not pin her for some reason, but instead hit a running leg drop for two. Jax went for an avalanche body slam, but Stratton countered into a powerslam.

Naomi entered with a chair to her music, about ten minutes in. Cargill entered to her music and chased Naomi through the crowd.

Jax missed a tackle and went shoulder-first into the ringpost. Stratton followed with a PME for a close nearfall. The announcers freaked out and said Jax was the first to kick out of Stratton’s finisher.

Stratton went back to the top, but Jax shoved her off and hit a Samoan drop onto the announce table (which didn’t break).

Jax went for the Annihilator, but Stratton slipped underneath for a powerbomb attempt. Stratton couldn’t hit the move, and Jax fell on top of her for the Annihilator, but Stratton just barely got a rope break. (This wasn’t a perfect-looking spot, but it looked brutal, which made for a great nearfall.)

Jax was pissed because she thought she had it won, so she left the ring and grabbed the title belt. Jax gave the belt back to the referee to distract him and grabbed a chair instead. As the ref put the belt away, Stratton dropkicked the chair right into Jax’s face. It was a stiff chair shot, and Jax’s head bled immediately.

Stratton followed with PME for the pinfall win, and the crowd popped.

This was pretty good, with lots of nearfalls and an exciting closing sequence. Hopefully, Jax is ok from the dropkick.

Match result: Tiffany Stratton defeated Nia Jax to retain the WWE Women’s Championship (13:47)

WWE WrestleMania 41 notes: Celebrities, announced attendance, Rey Fenix

Here are some news and notes from Saturday’s night one of WWE WrestleMania 41.

Celebrities in the house

As expected, a who’s who of celebrities were at the first night including NFL star George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers, musicians Jelly Roll and Lil Yachty, UFC head Dana White (who was booed the second time he was shown on camera), actor Stephen Amell, podcaster Bill Simmons, former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, magician Criss Angel, music producer Rick Rubin, and TKO executives.

WrestleMania 41 attendance

Shawn Michaels announced night one was attendance was a sellout of 61,467. At 9 AM Saturday morning, WrestleTix estimated a distributed number of just under 56,000 with a setup for just over 57,000.

The announced number is shy of the 63,969 for the 2024 Vegas Kickoff Classic between USC and LSU and a few hundred behind the 61,629 for that same year’s Super Bowl.

WrestleMania in-ring debuts

A year ago, Rey Fenix was readying for his return to the AEW ring after dealing with injuries to his back and hip — ones he called the worst of his career.

Fast forward to Saturday night and Fenix came in as an injury replacement for Rey Mysterio who tore his groin in a trios match on Friday’s SmackDown, making his WrestleMania debut in the process. He still fell in defeat to El Grande Americano who continues his war with his, ahem, fellow luchadores.

Fenix wasn’t the only one to make their WrestleMania debuts Saturday as WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton picked up a successful title defense against Charlotte Flair. Stratton competed in a dark match on the SmackDown before WrestleMania just over a year ago.

Jacob Fatu made his first WrestleMania a big one as he defeated LA Knight for the WWE United States title — his first singles belt in WWE.

Rey Fenix replacing Rey Mysterio in WWE WrestleMania 41 match

Rey Mysterio is out of WrestleMania 41.

During the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, Rey Mysterio announced that he was injured during his match on SmackDown Friday and as a result, was not medically cleared to compete at WrestleMania. Mysterio then revealed that Rey Fenix would be replacing him in his match against El Grande Americano.

Mysterio teamed with Fenix and Dragon Lee on SmackDown to take on Chad Gable and American Made. During the middle of the match, Julius Creed grabbed Mysterio, injuring him. Fenix and Dragon Lee worked the rest of the match, with Fenix scoring the win for his team.

Dave Meltzer has reported that Mysterio suffered a torn groin.

Mysterio appeared on the pre-show as WWE officially announced that they had purchased AAA, with a Worlds Collide joint show with WWE, NXT, and AAA talent scheduled for June 7 at the Kia Forum.

WWE SmackDown live results: Cody Rhodes appears, Rey Fenix in action

On the second-to-last SmackDown before WrestleMania, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is set to appear. We’ll hear from Rhodes for one of the last times before his title defense against John Cena, which will headline night two of Mania on Sunday, April 20.

It was officially announced this week that Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest will take place at WrestleMania. After their most recent interaction saw Priest put McIntyre through the windshield of a car, the two will have a face-to-face confrontation tonight.

The WrestleMania challengers for WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez will be determined tonight by a gauntlet match.

Plus, Rey Fenix will have his second match in a WWE ring, going head-to-head with Berto. Fenix made his debut last week by defeating Nathan Frazer.

Tonight’s show is being held at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

– Joe Tessitore welcomed everyone into the show as shots of Seattle aired. Those shots quickly turned into shots of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

– Drew McIntyre, Damian Priest, Berto, Angel, Santos Escobar, Rey Fenix and Cody Rhodes were all shown in various places backstage.

– Footage of Kevin Owens’s announcement from last week aired. Nick Aldis was shown in the middle of the ring.

The Nick Aldis/Randy Orton/Solo Sikoa segment

I was really kind of hoping they’d put Aldis in the spot with Orton for Mania, but it appears that won’t be the case. It was odd – the crowd seemed to pop for the idea at first, but when Aldis talked about working his ass off for 20 years to get to WWE and then paused for what he presumably thought would be some cheers, you could hear a pin drop. Anyway, I can’t say Orton vs. Sikoa at Mania does much for me, but perhaps they’ll make it interesting with a pivot between now and then. Here’s hoping Aldis gets a shot to actually lace them up in WWE someday, though. He really did work his ass off for 20 years to get there.

Loud Randy Orton chants broke out as Aldis spoke. Aldis said he was instructed to maintain his professionalism, and because he’s a man of his word, he invited Randy Orton to come to the ring. Orton’s music hit and Orton made his way to the ring. The crowd was hot for the segment as Aldis and Orton stood quiet. Orton said he could tell by the look in Aldis’s eyes that he took last week very, very personally. Orton recalled how he gave Aldis an RKO a year ago and he paid a fine. Orton said he paid a fine for last week’s RKO and because of that, they are even.

Orton said he wanted to speak to Aldis about not having a match at WrestleMania. Orton said it would be his 20th time competing at WrestleMania and Orton needed Aldis to do his job and get Orton an opponent. Orton said he didn’t what it took – perhaps Aldis could lose his suit for the night and gear up for the night. Aldis said he busted his ass for 20 years to make it to the WWE – he then paused and the crowd booed. Aldis said he didn’t need Orton’s money; he needed Orton’s respect. The crowd chanted “RKO!” loudly.

Orton said Aldis has his respect, but if Aldis doesn’t deliver on a match for Orton, he can’t apologize to Mickie James for doing what he’s going to do if he doesn’t get his match. Solo Sikoa’s music hit and Sikoa walked out with Tama Tonga. Sikoa told Aldis to tell Orton to get out of the ring. Sikoa said nobody wanted to hear Orton cry. Sikoa said nobody cares if Orton has a Mania match and it’s over for Orton because he’s in the past. Sikoa said Jacob Fatu will walk out of Mania as the new U.S. Champion while Orton will be sitting at home all alone.

Orton said it was funny that they had the balls to interrupt him. Orton talked about how his voices have been knocking and he invited them into the ring to beat “two Samoan boys up.” Sikoa and Tonga stepped into the ring and the numbers got the best of Orton as Aldis sat at ringside. LA Knight’s music hit and Knight ran to the ring to even things out. Knight and Orton got the best of Sikoa and Tonga. Knight grabbed a microphone and said, “again, again and again, it’s the same damn thing” with Sikoa and Tonga. Knight challenged Sikoa and Tonga to a match between them and Orton and Knight. Aldis made the match official for later.

– A video recap of Pat McAfee’s Big Night Aht aired.

– Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez sat at ringside for the next match.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria won the No. 1 Contender’s Gauntlet Match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship [20:02 of TV time]

This might have been the expected outcome, but there was a lot of really good action in this thing, even if it was brief – some of the legs of the gauntlet only lasted a couple minutes when it came to what was actually shown on television. Still, everyone on every team worked hard and this exceeded my expectations. With commercials, it took up about 40 minutes of the first hour of the show, so that’s got to mean something … right? Meanwhile, I wonder if this leads to Bayley vs. Valkyria Part 2 after their very good match on Monday’s Raw. The biggest ball of fire here? Carter & Chance, who came in looking inspired and brought a bunch of high-octane moments to their limited time in the match. Good on them for making the most of what they were given. Really, though – good on everyone involved for making the most of what was given to them.

Lyra Valkyria & Bayley squared off against Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark to begin the gauntlet. Bayley and Baszler began the match with Baszler working Bayley’s arm. Stark tagged in and kept the attention on Bayley’s arm. Bayley came back with an arm-drag, but Stark popped up with a clothesline and tagged Baszler back into the match. Valkyria tagged in and landed a bridge suplex on Baszler for a two-count. With Baszler on the outside, Valkyria set up for a dive, but Stark came off the top to cut Valkyria off. Baszler suplexed Valkyria and Stark came off the top with a neck-breaker. Baszler set Valkyria up, but Valkyria rolled onto Baszler and advanced her team.

Natalya & Maxxine Dupri made their entrance as the next team in the match as the show went to a commercial break. The show returned and Valkyria was in the ring with Natalya briefly until Bayley tagged in. Natalya welcomed her with a twisting clothesline. Dupri tagged in to a loud pop and hit a cross-body from the top rope for a two-count on Bayley. Dupri fired up and landed a splash on both Bayley and Valkyria in a corner. Dupri did her Worm elbow-drop, but Bayley kicked out. Dupri went for a Sharpshooter and Bayley rolled Dupri to advance.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria defeated Natalya & Maxxine Dupri to advance in the gauntlet match [2:03 of TV time].

Kayden Carter & Katana Chance rushed to the ring as the next team in the match and hit a bunch of double-team moves on Bayley. After their fury, Bayley hit an elbow drop on Carter for a two-count. Valkyria tagged in and Carter landed a running boot to Valkyria’s head. Carter and Chance hit the Keg Stand, but Valkyria kicked out. Carter landed a Corkscrew dive onto Bayley on the outside while inside the ring, Valkyria landed Night Wing on Chance to advance.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria defeated Kayden Carter & Katana Chance to advance in the gauntlet match [2:07].

Michin & B-Fab made their entrance as the show went to another commercial break. Back from that break, B-Fab gave Valkyria a boot to the face. Michin tagged in and went to work on Valkyria until Valkyria slowed Michin down and tagged in Bayley. Michin didn’t flinch and gave Bayley a Tornado DDT for a two-count. B-Fab tagged in and kicked Bayley in the face. B-Fab landed a sort of front-neck-breaker for a two-count. Michin dropkicked Valkyria and hit a splash on her while she was on the outside. Meanwhile, on the inside, Bayley hit the Rose Plant on B-Fab to advance.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria defeated B-Fab & Michin to advance in the gauntlet match [2:01 of TV time].

Piper Niven and Alba Fyre made their entrance as the final team in the gauntlet. Fyre went to work on Bayley, turning her attention to Bayley’s leg as Niven ran Valkyria into the ring steps on the outside. Niven hit a Senton on Bayley for a two-count. The show then went to another commercial break. The show returned and Niven slammed Bayley. Niven then slammed Fyre onto Bayley for a two-count. Niven tagged in and Bayley DDT’d Niven and Fyre at the same time.

Valkyria ultimately received the hot tag and Valkyria landed a cross-body onto Niven. Valkyria hit a Tornado DDT on Niven and went for a fisherman’s suplex, but Niven countered into a suplex of her own. Niven went to the second rope and saluted the crowd, but Valkyria cut Niven off and powerbombed her. Bayley tagged in and hit the flying elbow from the top rope, but Niven kicked out at one. Niven followed that with a sidewalk slam on Bayley. Fyre tagged in and and hit what appeared to be the Secret Hervice’s finisher, but Valkyria barely broke the pin up at 2.99999 to keep things going.

All four women brawled in the middle of the ring. Bayley hit a Bayley-To-Belly on Fyre while Niven landed a headbutt on Valkyria. Valkyria pushed Niven to the outside and the two then battled on the apron. Valkyria powerbombed Niven onto the floor and Fyre rolled Bayley up for a near-fall. Fyre lifted Bayley, but Bayley got loose and tagged in Valkyria. Bayley hit Rose Plan and Valkyria came off the top with a leg drop, which got her team the win.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria defeated Piper Niven & Alba Fyre to win the gauntlet match. [10:31]

After the match, Morgan and Rodriguez entered the ring to engage in a stare down with Bayley and Valkyria.

– Tessitore explained that Charlotte and Tiffy have been disciplined due to what happened last week. A video recapping the Priest/McIntyre car spot from two weeks ago then aired.

– A video looking at The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 18 aired.

The Damian Priest/Drew McIntyre segment

A lot of good energy here and both guys sold the hell out of that Future Shock DDT on the ring steps. I actually thought we wouldn’t see more of Priest after he went away at first, but I was glad to see him get back to the ring to mix things up some more – even if it didn’t quite benefit him in the end. They’ve worked hard to heat this thing up and all things honest, I didn’t think they could do much with the program. But these brawl segments, complete with the real-glass-windshield spot two weeks ago, have helped this viewer gain at least a moderate amount of interest in what’s happening between McIntyre and Priest. I’m not so sure the match is a year in the making, like McIntyre claimed during his promo, but we’re better off today on this than we were yesterday, and that’s thanks to the wrestlers’ commitment to getting this match over.

Damian Priest made his entrance and while he was doing so, Drew McIntyre attacked him from behind. McIntyre slammed Priest into an LED board in the entranceway. Priest was helped to the back and McIntyre grabbed a microphone. McIntyre used some eye/seeing puns and called McIntyre said Priest benefited every time McIntyre got screwed. McIntyre noted how Priest challenged McIntyre to street fight even though McIntyre has only one eye, because that’s the kind of man Priest is. McIntyre’s remarks were getting cheers from the crowd. McIntyre ripped his eye patch off and said he is 100 percent cleared, which means Priest will be 100 percent screwed at Mania.

Priest reappeared in the entranceway and fought off officials to get back to Drew. In the ring, Priest gave Drew a clothesline and a splash in a corner. Priest then clotheslined Drew over the top to the outside. While on the outside, McIntyre grabbed the steel steps and rammed them into Priest’s head. Drew was bleeding from somewhere and pushed the officials away. From there, McIntyre hit the Future Shock DDT on Priest onto the ring steps. McIntyre then ripped a necklace off Preist’s neck. McIntyre’s music hit to end the segment.

– #DIY and Pretty Deadly were watching footage from #DIY’s match last week. Ciampa said he thinks there is a conspiracy to keep #DIY away from the tag titles. Pretty Deadly said Gargano and Ciampa have gone crazy. Elton Prince said desperation doesn’t look good on Gargano and Ciampa. Motor City Machine Guns walked into the frame after Pretty Deadly left. Chris Sabin said they’re going to face the Street Profits on next week’s SmackDown for the tag titles.

Rey Fenix defeated Berto [10:42]

The post-match thing was kind of odd. I was expecting Escobar to turn around and attack Fenix, but maybe this means Fenix is Legado Del Fantasma bound. Unless if we’re supposed to buy Escobar as a babyface sometime soon. And … well … no. Or, we’ll just go boilerplate and Escobar ends up attacking Fenix next week. Either way, this match was more competitive than it needed to be. Fenix is WWE’s newest star and Berto has been treading water whenever they throw him on TV for a long time now. Nearly 11 minutes seemed like a bit much, but Berto delivered and Fenix did, too. This was probably Berto’s best singles match on the main roster … ever? Someone will correct me. This was really pretty good, though. Lots of good action tonight.

Fenix went for pins early on to no avail. Berto clotheslined the hell out of Fenix to slow things down. Berto landed a chop, but Fenix came right back with a kick to Berto’s midsection. Berto regained control with a series of boots. Fenix went to the top, but Berto pushed Fenix off and to the outside, where Berto hit a dive onto Fenix. The show then went to a commercial break.

The show returned and Berto still had the upper hand until he ran into a boot from Fenix. Fenix followed that up with a shotgun dropkick from the top rope. Fenix chopped Berto repeatedly and hit a moonsault headbutt from the top. Fenix followed up with a double-stomp on Berto’s back. Fenix fired up the crowd and hit a corkscrew splash over the ropes and to the outside. Back inside the ring, Fenix landed a rolling Frog Splash for a two-count.

Before long, Berto placed Fenix on the top rope and executed a leaping kick for a nice near-fall. Berto sunset-flipped Fenix and followed that with a sit-out powerbomb for another nice near-fall. Fenix was perched on the top and Berto chopped his chest. Fenix fought back and hit a jumping Frankensteiner, but Berto barely kicked out at 2.9. Berto came back with a stiff-looking powerbomb for a great near-fall. Berto went to the top and went for a moonsault, but Fenix got his feet up to reset things. Fenix walked the top rope and kicked Berto in the face. It wasn’t long after that when Fenix landed the Mexican Muscle Buster for the win.

After the match, Escobar walked out and made Berto shake Fenix’s hand. Berto did so begrudlingly. Escobar, himself, then shook Fenix’s hand and that ended things.

– Byron Saxton interviewed Roxanne Perez backstage. Perez was in front of Aldis’s office. Perez said she was ready to steal the show because Tiffy can’t stand the pressure. Tiffy showed up out of nowhere and said Perez could learn something from her. The two squabbled and Aldis walked out of his office. Tiffy said she’d face Perez tonight in a match and Aldis said he’d think about it.

– A video about CM Punk and Paul Heyman’s relationship aired. It chronicled their history as best buds.

– Chelsea Green was trying to get into the trainers’ room to talk to Fyre and Niven, but the door was locked. Zelina Vega walked by and told Green she’d have to see what type of champion she really is. Vega then made her entrance for the next match.

Zelina Vega defeated Chelsea Green via count out [1:04]

This has to be the quickest 10 count in the history of wrestling. This was so awkward. The live crowd didn’t even appear to have an idea of what was happening when the bell rang to end the match. Umpf.

Green started the match by throwing her dress at Vega and attacking her. Green hit a dropkick that sent Vega to the outside. Green threw Vega into the crowd barrier and then dropped Vega on top of the commentary table. Green threw Vegan back into the ring and jawed at the commentary table. I guess that was enough for a 10 count and Green lost via count out.

**********

– Escobar was backstage and told Berto he was extremely disappointed in Berto. Escobar wanted to go find Fenix to congratulate him on a job well done. Angel left with Escobar after tapping Berto on the leg.

– In a separate segment, Andrade approached Berto and told him he’s a great wrestler and he needs to keep his head up. Berto stood up and told Andrade to mind his own business.

– A Naomi vignette aired. A Jade Cargill vignette aired right after that. Both were very good.

– Cody Rhodes made his entrance. A bunch of designs of former world titles were set up on tables inside the ring for his segment.

The Cody Rhodes segment

This was clever in a cute way, but it was made better because of Cody’s fire. His intensity made it work and that was kind of/sort of impressive, considering how he’s been forced to run solo so often in this build to his Mania main event. Cody’s logic is sound and the story they are telling works in its own way, but we can all agree at this point that the lack of tie-in to how or why Cena decided to align with The Rock to kick this whole thing off makes everything feel lacking in one way or another. Cena spent the first couple weeks whining about the fans. Things got a little better between the two since then, but this is still a story that has too many holes. Cody has done his best to keep the fire, though, and this was no exception. He deserves a lot of credit for keeping things afloat.

Cody fired up and already-fired-up crowd before he began talking. The Seattle crowd launched into the European Cody Rhodes chant. Cody said the crowd had him flustered and he thanked the crowd. Cody talked about when he “did Defy,” which made some people happy. Cody pointed to his title said it means he’s “the best wrestler in the world.” Cody said he’s blessed to carry that belt, but it won’t always be him. Cody said his Mania match is about keeping that title home. Cody said it’s about the 20 champions and not just him.

Cody said there is one man trying to take all that away – John Cena. “Let’s go Cena/Cena sucks!” chants started in the crowd and Cody paused. Cody said Cena has neglected to make Seattle part of his farewell tour and the crowd booed. Cody said Cena will be in Vegas for SmackDown next week. Cody said one thing Cena said that sticks with him is what Cena said about Cody’s tattoo – it’s that Cody is just a “common fan.” Cody said, “So what?” Cody says he has the tattoo for the same reason he wears suits and that’s to be somebody. Cody ran through the titles on the tables and paid homage to all the former WWE Champions. He mentioned “Latino Heat” and the crowd chanted “Eddie!”

Cody spun the spinner belt and mentioned Cena. Cody said Cena looks at the spinner belt and considers it a bad thing, but Cody doesn’t. Cody talked about how Cena said Cody isn’t authentic, but he said he’s the WWE Champion and Cena is not. Cody said he might be able to teach John Cena a lesson – it’s that the crowd is allowed to love somebody else. Cody talked about all the other WWE stars and the crowd cheered. Cody said Cena is a man of his word, so that means Cena means he actually take the WWE title home. Cody looked into the camera and said the bell is going to ring and he will leave Cena to the ring to have his moment because Cody’s time is now while Cena’s time is up. Cody said one day, his time will be up, too, but for now, Cody’s title will stay home and “stay with us.” Cody’s music hit to end the segment.

**********

– Next week, per the commentary team, John Cena will return. The Andre The Giant Battle Royal will also go down. Vega, Chance & Carter will take on The Green Regime as well. The Street Profits will defend their tag titles against the Motor City Machine Guns, too.

– Saxton interviewed The Profits backstage. Ford said they like MCMG and referenced how they don’t care about a bunch of stuff but the reason they don’t care about them is because they don’t have them. Dawkins said something about “the IWC glazers” in reference to MCMG. Melo and Miz showed up and Miz said the fact that the tag titles aren’t on the Mania card is an insult to the titles and the Profits. Miz said he’s putting them on notice because of as much. Melo said they most definitely want the smoke and walked away. Dawkins was angry.

Tiffany Stratton defeated Roxanne Perez [9:17]

Rock-C (as some of us may remember her) looked really good in this position – which is a position that felt very last minute, even if it wasn’t. I’m a bit worried because between this and the start/stop of her program with Bayley, I wonder if the main roster actually has clear plans for Perez whenever she gets there full-time – or if the main roster doesn’t have clear plans for Perez whenever she gets there full-time. I’d hate to see her fade into the fold because she has so much talent and she’s so young and that future of hers is just so bright. I’m praying for anything but a makeshift tag-team that sees her play a reluctant partner to a more established character that is on the other side of their career (hi, Melo and Miz!). I’m glad the post-match attack happened because that furthers the Charlotte and Tiffy story. The only problem was that it was too brief.

Perez went for a strike and Tiffy caught her. Tiffy shoulder-blocked Perez to the ground. Perez came back and worked a side head-lock before whipping Tiffy to the ground by her hair. Stratton slapped Perez and followed up with a bunch of arm-drags. Tiffy suplexed Perez a couple times for a two-count. Perez grabbed the ring apron and while the referee wasn’t looking, raked Tiffy’s eyes. Perez ran Tiffy into the ring post and stomped on Tiffy’s left arm. The show went to a commercial break.

Back from break, Tiffy hit a spinebuster for a two-count. Perez went for Tiffy’s arm after that, but ran into a pop-up powerbomb for a two-count. Tiffy missed a hip attack and Perez slammed Tiffy before stepping over her. Perez went for a moonsault from the second rope, but Tiffy got her knees up. From there Tiffy went to the top, but Perez cut her off and hit a Russian Leg Sweep from the top, followed by a kick to the midsection. Perez went for a Pop Rox, but Tiffy countered and the two traded pin attempts to no avail. Perez worked a cross-face, but Tiffy powered out, slammed Perez and hit the Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the win.

After the match, Charlotte appeared in street clothes out of nowhere and attacked Stratton. Charlotte threw Tiffy over the commentary table and pushed Wade Barrett. The two had a weird standoff and Charlotte stood on the commentary table. Stratton sold midsection pain while Charlotte walked away.

– A vignette chronicling the Punk/Heyman favor aired, complete with the presence of Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.

– The Mania cards were revealed. On Saturday: Reigns/Punk/Rollins. Cargill/Naomi. War Raiders/New Day. Mysterio/Grande Americano. Knight/Fatu. Stratton/Charlotte. Gunther/Jey Uso. On Sunday: Bayley & Lyra/Raquel & Liv. Priest/McIntyre. Penta/Dom/Bron/Balor. Styles/Paul. SKY/Belair/Ripley. Cody/Cena. By my count, that’s seven matches on Night One and six on Night Two. We still don’t have an official Orton match. Something tells me these actually won’t be the final official cards for both nights.

LA Knight & Randy Orton defeated Tama Tonga & Solo Sikoa [8:58]

Man. I said that stuff about Sikoa and Orton at Mania earlier thinking there was no way that was the actual direction they were going in, but … I guess they are? If anything, I could live with a squash. Bell rings. RKO. Goodnight, Solo Sikoa. There have been some rumblings about a tag and a potential former star returning to tag with Orton, depending on what you read, but we’ll leave that to speculation. If Orton’s replacement opponent ends up being Sikoa and only Sikoa, though … well, shoot. As for this match, it was fine for what it was. I actually liked switching up Orton’s Greatest Hits and putting them at the front of the match, making some of us think that perhaps it was going to be a quick one and an angle was on the way. It was not to be. Overall, SmackDown needs a reboot. We knew that. But seeing a star like Orton just sort of twist in the wind on Friday nights feels wrong at this point. Maybe post-Mania, changes are afoot.

Knight and Tonga started the match, with Tonga getting the best of Knight. Sikoa tagged in and elbowed Knight to the ground. Sikoa taunted Orton and Knight came back, throwing Sikoa outside of the ring. Knight tagged Orton, who worked over Sikoa, including his snap-powerslam. Ditto for Tonga. Orton set Sikoa up for the draping DDT and actually hit it very early in the match. Orton set up for the RKO, but Sikoa countered into a Samoan Drop. Tonga dropkicked Knight off the apron. The show went to its final commercial break.

The show returned and Orton was attempting to tag Knight, but couldn’t get there. Sikoa knocked Knight off the apron and worked a chin-lock on Orton. Eventually, Orton hit a back suplex and got the hot tag to Knight. Tonga also tagged in and Knight took care of him, complete with a Russian Leg Sweep. Knight stomped on Tonga and gave Sikoa a neck-breaker. Knight powerslammed Tonga. Knight landed an elbow drop on Tonga, but Sikoa broke up the pin attempt. Sikoa then hit a Samoan Spike on Knight. Orton gave an RKO to Tonga and Sikoa brawled with Orton on the outside of the ring. The two battled into the crowd. Back inside the ring, Knight gave Tonga a BFT for the win.

After the match, Jacob Fatu showed up and super-kicked Knight. Fatu hit a running Senton and headbutted Knight repeatedly. Fatu landed a hip attack on Knight and followed that up with his step-up moonsault. Fatu picked up the U.S. title and threw it down in favor of another step-up moonsault. The show ended with Fatu’s music playing and Fatu licking the U.S. title … and then hitting another moonsault.

WWE SmackDown live results: Fenix debuts

After spending a few weeks in Europe, WWE is back in the United States for tonight’s SmackDown.

Former AEW star Fenix will make his WWE debut. No word on what Fenix’s plans are for tonight, but it’s expected that his first WWE program will be against Andrade.

Two weeks from tomorrow, CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins will headline night one of WrestleMania 41. All three competitors are set to appear live tonight. It’ll be a favorable environment for Punk with SmackDown being held in his hometown of Chicago.

A pair of number one contender’s matches are scheduled. Motor City Machine Guns vs. DIY will decide the next challengers for WWE Tag Team Champions The Street Profits — and Jacob Fatu and Braun Strowman will clash with a shot at LA Knight’s United States title on the line.

Plus, there will be a grudge match with B-Fab taking on Naomi.

Join us for live coverage starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

– Following the WWE signature open, we opened with shots of the Chicago skyline, Allegiant Stadium (WrestleMania 41 in 15 days), and subsequent clips of Braun Strowman, Jacob Fatu, LA Knight, #DIY, The Motor City Machine Guns, B-Fab, and Naomi at the arena.

– As always, the dynamic duo of Joe Tessitore & Wade Barrett welcomed us to SmackDown, as we got a recap of last week’s CM Punk/Seth Rollins/Roman Reigns contract signing. Following that, it was back live to the arena as CM Punk himself arrived to a great ovation from his hometown Chicago crowd.

CM Punk opens SmackDown

Punk started by putting over the Chicago crowd for being loud as he took a TV camera to let the fans cheer as loud as they can for the whole world to see. He said that his goal was to make new fans, but tonight, he was here to thank the 16,000 strong hometown crowd that was here to see him tonight. Punk pointed towards the WrestleMania sign as he reminded everyone that he was in the main event of WrestleMania 41 (one of them, at the very least). Punk said that he earned that opportunity and that through all his life, he was told “you were not supposed to be here” and that he had to work hard to be here. He said that now, the hard work begins.

Punk thanked everyone, starting with his wife April and his puppy Larry first. He said that he would not be who he was without the city of Chicago as he once again thanked everyone. Punk promised that he would whoop Seth Rollins’ ass, put a beating to Roman Reigns at the main event of WrestleMania.

Paul Heyman interrupted proceedings with his trademark “ladies and gentlemen” spiel. Heyman apologized for being late and that there was not disrespect intended to his “best friend” Punk by interrupting him. Punk welcomed Heyman into the ring, stating that he was just getting to him. Heyman said, “ask not what Chicago can do for you, but what your Wiseman can do for you.” He said that Punk belonged in the ring and in the main event of WrestleMania.

Heyman reminisced about the time he begged Punk to take him the last time both were in Chicago as he then talked about the WarGames offer to Punk. He thanked Punk for helping save the Bloodline before he said that he had one more favor to ask of Punk. Heyman asked Punk to tell him what the favor that he owed him.

Punk found out from Heyman that Roman Reigns wasn’t in the building yet, as he then told Heyman that he was going to talk about this favor once Reigns arrived in the arena at some point in the evening, and it was one that would have a direct effect on Reigns himself.

A fine opening salvo from Punk to help set up what’s sure to be an interesting payoff for the favor that Heyman owes him.

Rey Fenix def. Nathan Frazer

Frazer was already in the ring ahead of Fenix’s entrance, as the newest arrival to WWE got a great ovation from the Chicago crowd.

Fenix and Frazer opened with dueling flips as we got an early standoff amidst the chain wrestling action. Fenix hit an impressive dodge between the ropes before he hit Frazer with a side kick. Frazer sent Fenix to the outside as he tried for a dive between the ropes, but he clipped the middle rope and didn’t get all of it. Fenix went up top and soared for a dive onto Frazer at ringside as the action went to a commercial break.

SmackDown returned with Frazer and Fenix battling it out on the top rope. Frazer leapt up from the canvas up top for a springboard superplex and a Final Cut neckbreaker for the two. Frazer went up top and looked for a Phoenix Splash on Fenix, but couldn’t get it.

Fenix had Frazer trapped across the top rope and ran across it for an impressive leaping kick. Fire Driver by Fenix on Frazer got an incredibly close two-count. Frazer nailed Fenix with an enzuigiri to the head, but found himself hit with a superkick. Fenix hit Frazer with the Goodbye Amigo kick, as he then hoisted him on his shoulders to finish this off with the Mexican Muscle Buster for the 1, 2, 3 and the win in his WWE debut.

After the match, Byron Saxton interviewed the victorious Fenix in the ring. Fenix said he had a lot of history in Chicago (he competed in a trios match with Rey Mysterio and Bandido against the Young Bucks and Kota Ibushi at the original All In event in 2018) and that tonight was the rebirth of Rey Fenix. He said he was reborn with rage and animo, as he concluded with “I am WWE! Animo!”

A fun debut match for Fenix, and seeing Nathan Frazer from NXT be his first opponent was a pleasant surprise, especially as someone who watches a lot of NXT for the purpose of keeping abreast for their PLEs. I enjoyed Fenix’s time in AEW, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him in his WWE career.

**********

– Backstage, Legado Del Fantasma were seen watching Fenix, as Berto said that he was better than Fenix. Santos Escobar told Berto that he was going to talk to Nick Aldis to make that match between Berto and Fenix happen.

– An eyepatch-wearing Drew McIntyre addressed Damian Priest, stating that nobody cared about him unless he was “feasting upon his scraps”. McIntyre talked about how Priest lurked in the shadows last week to ambush him. He said that he was going to pray, as “whenever Drew McIntyre prays, bad things happen.”

– Saxton interviewed Braun Strowman ahead of his Last Man Standing against Jacob Fatu before Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga interrupted. LA Knight barged in and told Strowman to save his energy for Fatu, which led to him trashing Tama as his match against him was up next.

LA Knight def. Tama Tonga (w/ Solo Sikoa)

Knight started off strong with strikes against Tonga, who answered with a dropkick. That wasn’t enough to deter Knight, who dropped Tonga with a suplex. Tonga responded by tripping Knight up, which allowed him to seize advantage, but it didn’t last long. Knight had Tonga trapped in the corner for a series of stomps, followed by a running knee to the face. Knight sent Tonga out of the ring and threw his head repeatedly against the announce table. Solo Sikoa got on the apron to briefly distract the referee, which allowed Tonga to send Knight crasing to the floor below. That took us to a break in the action.

SmackDown returned from break with Knight fighting out of a Tonga resthold as he regained momentum with a victory roll and a two-count. Tonga maintained command with a fierce clothesline that nearly took Knight’s head off, much to the approval of Sikoa at ringside. Tonga got up on the middle turnbuckle and attempted a diving elbow after mocking Knight’s taunt, but he missed big time. Knight fought back and got his second wind with multiple strikes and a neckbreaker. After he slammed Tonga in the middle of the ring, he dropped his signature elbow on Tonga.

Knight had Tonga in position for the BFT, but couldn’t connect. Sikoa tried to hit Knight with the Samoan Spike with the ref distracted. Knight managed to dodge it, however. Rollup by Tonga is reversed as Knight finished this match off with the BFT and the win.

Pretty much a standard match for the U.S. Champion, though Tama Tonga continues to be an entertaining presence.

– Paul Heyman was interviewed as he addressed the camera that whatever the favor was that he owed CM Punk, the answer was “yes”. A car slowly pulled up behind Heyman, which he assumed was Roman Reigns. Unfortunately for Heyman, it was Seth Rollins, who said that he had a plan for Punk and that he also wanted to be present for when the favor would be revealed later.

– Another smoke-filled teaser aired, giving us a glimpse of someone, as well as a symbol of some sort. Is this Aleister Black? Stay tuned…

Charlotte Flair & Tiffany Stratton Face-Off

Wade Barrett was in the ring to moderate this face-off between challenger Flair and Women’s Champion Stratton.

Flair responded to the fans booing her by saying it was “power” before Barrett asked her why she chose Stratton as her WrestleMania opponent. Flair maintained her claim that Stratton was desperate and that her choice was to show the “smartest fans in the world” that there was no comparison.

Stratton said Flair’s biggest battle wasn’t in the ring, but with the crowd, and it was a battle that Flair would never win. She said that no matter how many titles Flair wins, she’d always come second to her dad Ric Flair, and at WrestleMania, she’d come second to Tiffany Stratton.

The crowd booed Flair loudly, which prompted Stratton to respond by throwing back “it’s power” to her face. Flair tried to talk, but couldn’t get in a complete sentence as the Chicago crowd continued to jeer loudly. Stratton mocked Flair for not being able to say anything, with the fans continuing to boo her. Flair conceded and said that Stratton could have the last word.

Stratton said that at age 25, Flair was failing to get into volleyball and “drinking in daddy’s basement”, while at this age, she was heading into WrestleMania as the World Champion. Stratton said that outside the ring, Flair was the Queen of Shit. Stratton capped off her promo by stating that at WrestleMania, Flair would end up alone, just like outside the ring, as she brought up Flair’s previous failed relationships (“0 for 3”). Stratton walked off and headed up the ramp with her WWE Women’s Title held high above her head.

For better or worse, that segment was memorable. That being said, I wasn’t a fan of it at all. The Stratton vs. Flair WrestleMania feud has felt kind of weak, and I’m not sure if Stratton throwing out zingers about Flair’s failed relationships is the way to heat things up.

– Nick Aldis was backstage and announced a Women’s Tag Team Gauntlet would happen next week on SmackDown, with the winners going on to face Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez for the Women’s Tag Titles at WrestleMania.

WWE Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match: Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley) def. #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa)

Sabin & Gargano started things off in the ring with chain wrestling. Sabin got the upper hand with arm drags as Ciampa tagged in. Shelley entered the match and hit a nice double team move on Ciampa with Sabin’s help. The Machine Guns’ took advantage as they teed off on both Ciampa & Gargano. As a chase took place at ringside, Gargano got the blind tag and hit Shelley with a slingshot spear, which led to a picture-in-picture break.

We returned to live action with Sabin naling a double crossbody on #DIY as he held his own impressively. Shelley re-entered the fray while Sabin hit a suicide dive on Gargano & Ciampa. The MCMGs had Ciampa isolated and hit him with their array of double team moves for a near-fall. As Ciampa had the referee distracted, Gargano caused Sabin to drop down, which allowed for the top rope turnbuckle to be exposed.

Back in the ring, Ciampa got the near fall on Project Ciampa, as #DIY went to work on Sabin. Shelley made the save and got thrown out for his troubles. Ciampa and Gargano had Sabin in their sights for Meet in the Middle, but Sabin avoided calamity.

Another Skull & Bones attempt is foiled by Gargano as Ciampa tried to use a leverage pin to take advantage, but the referee caught Ciampa in the act. In the end, Sabin sent Ciampa into the exposed turnbuckle, which led to the roll up and the victory for the Machine Guns. Sabin and Shelley are now the number one contenders to the Street Profits’ WWE Tag Team Titles.

The SmackDown tag division is entertaining ring-wise, yes, but I think the biggest flaw plaguing them is the lack of promo time or anything substantial to get us to care about most of these teams. It was mentioned on commentary that the MCMGs and DIY had some shared history, but it would’ve been better if we got that history laid out in promos or segments. That said, I did enjoy this match regardless.

– The Miz & Carmelo Hayes confronted Pretty Deadly backstage, as they insulted the two for being losers. Elton Prince & Kit Wilson responded by mocking Miz’s role in The Marine movies, as they called him the “Leonardo DiCaprio of tag team wrestling”. They said that Hayes was wasting his time being Miz’s partner, to which Miz replied by citing his past as a nine-time champion.

Naomi def. B-Fab

As Naomi made her entrance, Jade Cargill ambushed her from behind and got in some good shots before security broke it up. Naomi stumbled her way to the ring as the match proper then got underway.

B-Fab held the advantage on Naomi as she was still left shell-shocked by Cargill’s surprise attack. B-Fab hit a nice slam on Naomi that got a count of two. Naomi managed to regain some semblance of control as she dodged a kick from B-Fab and hung her in a tree-of-woe position. Naomi then got the victory with a modified kneeling lungblower on B-Fab.

After the match, Naomi tried to call out Cargill, but was met with a pump kick from the target of her enmity. Cargill tried to hit Naomi with Jaded, but security separated the two. Nick Aldis appeared on stage and announced that Cargill and Naomi would face each other at WrestleMania.

The match itself was what it was, a short affair and meant more to set up the Naomi vs. Jade match at WrestleMania. In that regard, job well done. The match itself should be great and it’s always nice to see a women’s feud culminate at WrestleMania and not revolve around a title.

– Damian Priest addressed Drew McIntyre and his failures to remain focused on his goals, as he claimed McIntyre repeatedly screwed himself. He called McIntyre a hypocrite and a “junkie” that gets a high from making cheap-ass jokes every week. Priest challenged McIntyre to face him next week in the ring, as he promised to make McIntyre his victim for WrestleMania.

– Kevin Owens was seen walking backstage in casual clothes and a forlorn expression on his face. We’d hear from him coming up next.

Kevin Owens announces injury

Nick Aldis was in the ring and talked about how that this was the part of his job that he didn’t like, and that there was a fine line of being fine and never coming back again. He introduced Kevin Owens as he wanted the fans to hear from the man himself.

Owens entered without his usual pomp and circumstance and took the microphone. He talked about how in the 25 years he’s spent in the ring, he’s gotten to do amazing things and take care of his family as his result. He said that there was a toll that everyone in the locker room had to pay and that it was time for him to pay that toll. Owens said that he’s been wrestling for the past four months with a severe neck injury, to a point that he needs to take time off for surgery.

Owens said that it was an unfortunate timing as he was looking forward to facing Randy Orton at WrestleMania. Owens sincerely said that he was sorry and that he didn’t know when he’d ever return to the ring.

Randy Orton’s music interrupted as the Viper walked out just as Owens was getting ready to leave. Owens left the ring afterwards. Aldis broke the bad news to Orton that with Owens’ injury, he no longer has a match for WrestleMania. Orton looked devastated as he hit an RKO on Aldis in response to this news.

It’s been reported that Kevin Owens’ neck injury is indeed a legitimate one and obviously, it’s terrible news. We wish KO a speedy recovery and we can’t wait to see him return fully healthy in the future.

Last Man Standing: Jacob Fatu def. Braun Strowman (Winner Faces LA Knight for the U.S. Championship at WrestleMania)

These two monsters didn’t waste any time as Fatu went after Strowman outside the ring to start us off. In the ring, Fatu dropped Strowman with a running neckbreaker and looked to head up top. Strowman intercepted and tried for a Running Powerslam. Fatu fought out of it and hit running elbow. He went up top once again and hit consecutive jumping moonsaults on Strowman. The referee began her count as Strowman was forced to roll out from the ring just to stay on his feet, which led to a commercial break.

We returned to the match with Fatu in firm control as Strowman responded with a spinebuster that sent Fatu crashing to the canvas. As Fatu tried to roll himself back up, Strowman pulled out a table from under the ring. Strowman set the table against a corner of the ring. Strowman tried to run towards Fatu, but got sent outside the ring. Fatu charged from inside the ring right into Strowman, which sent him over the commentary table.

Fatu sent Strowman into the ringpost and had him in position for a charge into the barricade. Instead, he was met with a chair to the face courtesy of Strowman. With a full head of speed, Strowman ran all around ringside and barreled right into Fatu for a trainwreck-like crash through the barricade. Both men struggled as they barely got themselves back up on their feet. We then went to yet another break in the action.

Things picked up from the break with Strowman and Fatu fighting in the production area within the crowd. Strowman lifted Fatu and hit a mighty suplex onto a set of tables. Both Fatu and Strowman once again struggled to stand up, but they made it before the count of ten. As both Fatu and Strowman made their way back to ringside, both of them could barely remain standing. Strowman got himself back in the ring, but was right in the line of fire for a Fatu running hip attack through the table set up in the ring. Fatu managed to get himself to a vertical base as Strowman failed to stand up, which brough this Last Man Standing match to an end.

Just a fun little Last Man Standing match between two big men. With the victory, we now get Jacob Fatu versus LA Knight for the U.S. Championship at WrestleMania, and it should be a good one. With Fatu getting increasingly over with fans, could this match be the time to give him a title? We’ll soon find out in two weeks.

– We got a recap of Cody Rhodes & John Cena’s confrontation from Raw this past Monday.

Next Week on SmackDown: Cody Rhodes returns to SmackDown; Women’s Tag Team Gauntlet Match (Winners earn Women’s Tag Title Match at WrestleMania 41); Rey Fenix vs. Berto; Damian Priest & Drew McIntyre Face-to-Face

– Paul Heyman was seen waiting for Roman Reigns in the parking lot, and we’re told that Reigns is arriving at “any minute”. After the break, Reigns arrived in his truck and made his way down to the ring without the usual grandeur.

Paul Heyman’s Favor to CM Punk Revealed

Reigns started things off, as per usual, by asking the Chicago crowd to acknowledge him. He asked his Wise Man if CM Punk was in the building. He asked Heyman if Punk was still asking for the favor, and if he should share a secret with Chicago. Reigns said that Punk wouldn’t be back in WWE if it weren’t for him. He took credit for Punk being in the WrestleMania main event, as he called the Chicago crowd “good people, but not very smart.” Reigns said that Punk may have wrestled everywhere, but he wouldn’t have a sniff at the WrestleMania main event if it weren’t for the Tribal Chief. Reigns then called out Punk so that we could finally hear what the favor was.

Instead of the static of “Cult of Personality”, the cry of “BURN IT DOWN!” from Seth Rollins’ theme played, which brought Rollins himself out to these proceedings. Rollins was his usual trollish self as he made his way into the ring with a mic in his hand. After Rollins did his opening spiel, he said that he wasn’t going to miss this for the world as he might’ve not known what the favor was, but he knew it was going to knock Reigns’ socks off. Rollins said that reality has a history of biting Reigns’ in the ass, bringing up The Heist of the Century from WrestleMania 31 and Cody Rhodes beating Reigns last year at WrestleMania 40.

Rollins said that you cannot underestimate or ignore CM Punk, and the reality is that we now have to live with Punk in the main event of WrestleMania 40 as a result. Rollins noted that he took a break and it gave him perspective on two options: you either get left behind or you adapt and control reality.

Reigns responded by calling Rollins untrustworthy and that he was a man of his word, because he made a promise to CM Punk. Rollins said that there was only thing missing: CM Punk himself. That, of course brought out the Chicago Made Punk himself to complete this trifecta.

With a mic already in his hand, Punk said that this was about friendship, legacy, promises made and promises kept. This was about loyalty. He addressed Heyman and that this goes way back to when he took a chance on Punk when nobody did. Punk brought up the time Heyman left the company and how he mistakenly made it about himself, and he asked what he could do for him. Heyman said at the time that when Punk main evented WrestleMania “force them to deal with us”. Punk said that he was going to force Reigns to leave his comfort zone, as he revealed that the favor was that Paul Heyman would be in Punk’s corner at WrestleMania.

Reigns laughed at the idea of Punk’s favor because Heyman would never turn against Heyman because he loves him and is loyal to his Tribal Chief. Reigns asked Heyman to “let this fool down easy”, to which Heyman apparently refused.

Heyman continued to refuse Reigns’ demand, much to the Tribal Chief’s protestations. Reigns threatened Heyman to tell Punk “no”, but Heyman said “no, my Tribal Chief, I can’t do that. As Heyman was being intimidated by Reigns in the corner, Punk got the jump on Reigns and hit a GTS on him. With Reigns out cold, Punk and Rollins stared one another down briefly, as Rollins made his exit. SmackDown closed out with Punk standing tall.

**********

Well, the favor didn’t turn out to be something like a future title match as many were expecting, but I don’t hate the idea of it being Paul Heyman managing CM Punk, especially since this whole thing was kickstarted by Punk doing Heyman a solid by joining the Bloodline WarGames team. In any case, this triple threat match at WrestleMania should be a good one and the intrigue of Heyman cornering Punk should make things interesting.
