Wardlow defeats MJF at AEW Double or Nothing, earns contract

MJF, in fact, did show up to AEW Double or Nothing Sunday in Las Vegas and took a beating in a loss to Wardlow, giving MJF’s former associate his freedom and a new storyline contract.
There was 24 hours of drama surrounding MJF as he no-showed Saturday’s meet and greet and there was buzz that he might completely skip the show altogether due to some sort of new dispute with AEW.
In the end, he did appear and lost in just over seven minutes. Shortly before the show, it was reported the match would kick off the PPV.
Wardlow picked up the win after ten power bombs, declining to pin his rival after several of them in order to keep delivering more punishment. After the tenth that saw him pull the straps down, Wardlow simply put his foot on MJF’s for the pin and win.

After the match, MJF was stretchered out, had a neck brace applied and got oxygen.
As Wardlow walked up on the top of the stage, Tony Schiavone came out and revealed that Tony Khan said Wardlow was now #AllElite.
MJF vs. Wardlow scheduled to open AEW Double or Nothing

Those wondering about the status of MJF won’t have to wait long to get their answer.
Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated reports that MJF vs. Wardlow is scheduled to open tonight’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view main card, which begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
“Per sources close to AEW, the opening match of tonight’s Double or Nothing pay per view is currently scheduled to be MJF vs. Wardlow,” Barrasso wrote. “Young Bucks-Hardys is second, then Jade Cargill-Anna Jay. Anarchy in the Arena is two before the main event, which is Hangman-Punk.”
MJF’s status has been the main point of conversation since he no-showed yesterday’s Double or Nothing Fan Fest meet and greet. AEW has yet to comment publicly on the situation.
Dave Meltzer tweeted at 3:31 p.m. Eastern today: “As of a few minutes ago MJF wasn’t at the building.”
Fightful reported earlier this month that MJF is “leaning towards leaving AEW as of now” when his contract expires in 2024. MJF signed a five-year deal with AEW in 2019.
During a media call ahead of Double or Nothing, Tony Khan spoke about MJF’s contract situation being mentioned on screen: “For MJF, it’s been a great opportunity to not only air some real-life grievances and air his actual status, contractually or otherwise.”
In storyline, MJF vs. Wardlow has a stipulation where — if Wardlow wins — he’ll be free from the contract that he signed with MJF. If MJF wins, Wardlow can never sign with AEW.

MJF vs. Wardlow officially set for AEW Double or Nothing

After months of building up to it, MJF vs. Wardlow is now official for Sunday’s AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view.
Wardlow earned himself the match on Wednesday’s Dynamite by completing the final stipulation MJF decreed several weeks ago: defeat Shawn Spears in a steel cage match with himself as special referee.
While the odds worked against him early, Wardlow ducked a Spears chair shot which landed flush on MJF’s head knocking him out. Bryce Remsburg then came out to replace him, counting the pin after Wardlow landed his series of power bombs — the last one delivered on the same chair that knocked out MJF.
The other stipulation was ten lashes which Wardlow took last week.
If Wardlow wins at Double or Nothing, he is free and clear of his storyline contract with MJF. If he loses, he cannot sign a deal with AEW and remains under MJF’s employ.
Here’s the current lineup for Sunday’s PPV in Las Vegas:
- AEW World Champion Hangman Page defends against CM Punk
- AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa defends against Serena Deeb
- AEW Tag Team Champions Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus defend against Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland and Ricky Starks & Powerhouse Hobbs
- TBS Champion Jade Cargill defends against Anna Jay
- Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament finals: Adam Cole vs. Samoa Joe or Kyle O’Reilly
- Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament finals: Britt Baker vs. Ruby Soho or Kris Statlander (determined Friday)
- Young Bucks vs. The Hardys
- Wardlow vs. MJF
- Anarchy in the Arena match: Chris Jericho, Matt Menard, Angelo Parker, Daniel Garcia & Jake Hager vs. Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Eddie Kingston, Santana & Ortiz
- Malakai Black, Brody King & Buddy Matthews vs. PAC, Penta Oscuro & Rey Fenix
- Pre-show match: Hook & Danhausen vs. Tony Nese & Mark Sterling
Report: AEW, Killer Kross discussed Dynamite match with Wardlow
According to a Fightful report Wednesday, Killer Kross and AEW had talked about him as an opponent for Wardlow as part of the recent MJF angle.
Impact Wrestling regular W. Morrissey ended up being the MJF-picked opponent for Wardlow on the Wednesday, May 4th Dynamite, losing after a competitive match.
Fightful reported that AEW and the former Karrion Kross in WWE couldn’t come to terms on a deal, saying he was approached after AEW head Tony Khan said he enjoyed Kross and Scarlett’s work in response to a rumor he was originally tabbed for April’s ROH Supercard of Honor pay-per-view.
Scarlett was not going to be part of Kross’ match in AEW and Kross “was concerned that his introduction to the AEW audience would mimic that of his WWE debut against Jeff Hardy as opposed to the successful NXT formula that helped lead him to two NXT Championships.”
Since being released by WWE, Kross has worked in NJPW Strong, MLW, Warrior Wrestling, NEW and other indies.

MJF vs. Wardlow official for AEW Double or Nothing

MJF vs. Wardlow is official for AEW Double or Nothing on Sunday, May 29.
The contract for the bout was signed during this week’s AEW Dynamite episode after Wardlow agreed to adhere to a set of stipulations before the match.
MJF said that Wardlow must agree to receive ten lashes in a callback to MJF’s AEW feud with Cody Rhodes, who MJF mentioned by name. Wardlow must then face Shawn Spears in a steel cage match, with MJF serving as guest referee, presumably on an upcoming AEW Dynamite, though no date was announced. In an added twist, if Wardlow loses at Double or Nothing, he can never sign an AEW contract.
Wardlow agreed to the stipulations, signed the contract, then attacked the security in the ring. Before he could deliver a powerbomb to MJF, Mark Sterling jumped on Wardlow, allowing MJF to escape.
Five matches are now set for the Double or Nothing pay-per-view. Here is the announced lineup to this point:
AEW Double or Nothing, Sunday, May 29 —
- AEW World Championship: Hangman Page (c) vs. CM Punk
- AEW Women’s World Championship: Thunder Rosa (c) vs. Serena Deeb
- Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament finals
- Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament finals
- MJF vs. Wardlow *If Wardlow loses, he can never sign an AEW contract*

Impact’s W. Morrissey appears on AEW Dynamite, faces Wardlow

W. Morrissey appeared on tonight’s AEW Dynamite, facing Wardlow in a singles match.
On tonight’s Dynamite, MJF introduced Morrissey as Wardlow’s surprise opponent. He was announced as William Morrissey, with announcers noting he was part of Impact Wrestling. The finish had Wardlow countering Morrissey with a moonsault, pinning him with a powerbomb.
Last week’s Dynamite had MJF fuming after Wardlow was able to defeat Lance Archer. He then calmed down and made a phone call. He said that next week he would have someone bigger, stronger, and taller than Wardlow, and “you can’t teach that”, using the former catchphrase of the Enzo & Big Cass (Morrissey) tag team in WWE.
Morrissey made his debut for Impact last year, and has since feuded with the likes of Rich Swan and Moose. He most recently appeared at Impact’s Rebellion event, where he and Jordynne Grace failed to win the Impact Tag Team title elimination challenge that was later won by champions Eric Young & Joe Doering.
