WWE Hall of Famer says AEW pay-per-views are too long: ‘Knock it down one hour’

Bully Ray thinks AEW pay-per-views are too long.

On a recent episode of Busted Open Radio where the hosts were discussing AEW Full Gear 2025, Bully compared AEW running long shows to ECW doing the same before they landed on pay-per-view in April 1997.

“When it comes to the length of the show, I understand some fans being upset with that,” Bully said. “In ECW back in the day, we would have very long shows at the ECW Arena, but that was for the 1000 people who showed up to see the show. It wasn’t for the people watching on pay-per-view at home. There was no pay-per-view back then for ECW, so it was for the people in attendance.”

David LaGreca mentioned that he felt the audience in Newark on Saturday helped create a good atmosphere throughout the show despite the length.

“Listen, five hours is a long time to keep an energy level up no matter what you are doing,” Bully continued.

“I think that for AEW, the sweet spot for them might be four hours. Knock it down one hour. We know you’re never getting this done in three.”

Bully then compared the length of AEW pay-per-views to other events that can run four hours, such as concerts and football games.

Bully Ray’s comments about the length of AEW pay-per-views begin around the 3-minute and 9-second mark in the player below:

Tony Khan discusses what he looks for when scouting independent wrestlers

Tony Khan spoke about what he looks for when scouting talent during the AEW Full Gear post-event media event.

The AEW president addressed the topic when asked if he still watches independent wrestling.

“Yeah I do. Sometimes I go to independent wrestling,” Khan responded.

He continued to say that he scouts wrestlers in a similar way to how he scouts football players. He’s not necessarily looking for talent that is able to contribute right away, and he looks for wrestlers and players who can fill a role for the organization as well as potentially grow into other roles.

“I look for wrestlers that the fans connect with, and it’s all different things. Just like in football, football players are built different. You’re looking for different players that play different roles. Not every player is the same height and speed and skillset. And, there are things that you look for in some players versus other players and you look for some people who can come and play a role in your organization.”

“When you’re looking you say ‘Oh I think this person could do this and maybe they could grow into a role’ and same thing when you’re scouting a football player.”

Khan continued to say that wrestlers and football players can both under perform and over perform the expectations the organization has when they first bring them in, saying:

“Whether it’s football or wrestling, people can over perform or under perform those expectations but they are just estimations and ideas that you have. In the end, I go out and I look for people that I think could connect with the fans and people that could be a good fit for AEW. And especially people who would be good in our locker room and be a good part of our company but also people that are going to be great wrestlers for us. And it doesn’t necessarily in every case have to be right away, sometimes it can be, but it could be somebody for the future.”

Khan’s comments regarding what he looks for when scouting independent wrestlers comes in around the 1 hour and 40 minute mark of the below video:

World title change, heel turn & former champion’s surprise return close AEW Full Gear

In a dizzying sequence that closed Saturday’s AEW Full Gear, AEW has a new men’s World Champion in Samoa Joe, a new heel in Hook, and the return of Swerve Strickland from injury.

Joe won his second World title by defeating Hangman Page in a steel cage match in the night’s main event. That was aided by Hook who rejoined The Opps and hit Page with the World title belt which set up a Joe muscle buster that finished Page off to end a bloodbath between the two — the third-such match on the PPV.

Hook’s entrance was preceded by Katsuyori Shibata attempting to interfere only to be taken out by Eddie Kingston. Powerhouse Hobbs then got in the cage which brought out Hook and the aforementioned turn, reuniting him with the team that he was part of before he went out of action with a concussion.

As Joe was celebrating in the ring with a gang of Opps dojo members, the lights went out and an image of Page’s burning house played on the video wall. New music started playing, Prince Nana appeared, and then did Strickland who has been out of action since August’s Forbidden Door after getting knee surgery to deal with an old injury.

Joe, still pouring blood out of his head, offered up Page to Strickland as a sacrifice only to have Strickland go after him and take out the various dojo members one-by-one. Page eventually came to, joined Strickland, and the two stared down Joe and The Opps as they left up the ramp.

**********

Joe and Strickland have history as Strickland’s first World title run began at April 2024’s Dynasty when he defeated Joe for the gold. Strickland and Page also have their extended history, but made peace with each other this summer.

The loss ends Page’s second title run at 133 days which began at July’s All In Texas when he defeated Jon Moxley followed by five successful title defenses before Saturday.

The show ended at 12:30 AM Eastern.

Inaugural National Champion crowned at AEW Full Gear

Despite the early odds being against him, Ricochet survived a Casino Gauntlet match at Saturday’s AEW Full Gear to become the company’s inaugural National Champion.

Ricochet picked up the win after hitting a Spirit Gun on Kevin Knight after Knight had hit a UFO splash on Wheeler Yuta. That was preceded by a Yuta busaiku knee on Orange Cassidy as he was about to hit Ricochet with an Orange Punch.

The title belt was brought out from the back by Ricochet’s faction mates, the Gates of Agony. While not of the NWA title lineage, it does share the same name.

It’s his first title anywhere since a 42-day inaugural run with the WWE Speed title in 2024. Before that, he held the WWE Intercontinental title for nearly 100 days in 2022.

The Gauntlet match was started by Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin of The Hurt Syndicate. Ricochet nearly immediately came out at number three to call them out on not fighting when the two were then jumped from behind by the Gates of Agony to give Ricochet the brief advantage.

The bout also featured Claudio Castagnoli, “Speedball” Mike Bailey, Mark Davis, Daniel Garcia, and Matt Menard.

The champion already has his first title defense set as he will be part of next month’s Ring of Honor Final Battle event from Columbus, Ohio.
