Thekla has retained her AEW Women’s World Championship at Double or Nothing, while things turned more tense between Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander.
Toward the final stages of the May 24 edition of AEW Double or Nothing, fans saw Thekla defend her Women’s World title against Jamie Hayter, Hikaru Shida, and Kris Statlander.
Midway through the bout, fans saw Shida unknowingly hit Statlander, but she brushed it aside and continued through the match. Things turned more tense as Statlander later confronted Shida, and the two began an exchange before the other two women interfered.
Later, toward the closing moments of the match, fans saw Statlander hit the Saturday Night Fever on Thekla and cover her for the pinfall. However, it was her partner, Shida, who broke the pinfall attempt with a kendo stick. Shida hit Statlander with the kendo stick before she was sent outside to the ringside. Shida was then attacked and taken out by Hayter, while Thekla performed the stomp on Statlander and covered her for the win.
Shida’s decision to turn on Statlander and deny her the title win will intensify the already difficult dynamic of their partnership.
Meanwhile, Thekla has been the champion since February 2026 and is 103 days into her Women’s World title reign.
A few hours before the Wednesday, May 13, 2026, episode of Dynamite from Asheville, North Carolina, AEW President Tony Khan announced the addition of a new trios match on social media.

The announced trios match is now part of the already stacked May 13 AEW Dynamite lineup. The upcoming episode will see Darby Allin defend his AEW World title, Will Ospreay return, and the Men’s and Women’s AEW Owen Hart Foundation brackets get announced.

The Austrian pro-wrestler will defend her championship against Hikaru Shida, Kris Statlander, and Jamie Hayter in a four-way match at AEW Double or Nothing 2026.
Thekla has been the champion since February 2026 and has held the title for almost 88-days now. The upcoming match at Double or Nothing will mark Thekla’s sixth title defense.

Announced Tuesday, she will team with Alex Windsor on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite as the Brawling Birds take on opponents to be named.
Windsor last competed at April’s Dynasty, failing to defeat reigning champion Thekla in a physical match. Windsor mentioned on AEW TV that Hayter wasn’t cleared, but it’s unknown what injury she was dealing with. Windsor also failed to defeat Thekla in her own title shot.

Jamie Hayter believes Toni Storm’s absence opens the door for others in AEW’s women’s division.
Speaking to The Takedown on SI.com ahead of AEW Dynasty, where she’ll challenge Thekla for the AEW Women’s World title, Hayter noted that Storm’s absence has created opportunities for others in the division to step up.
Hayter said:
“I think Toni did such a fantastic job and no one else could have done that. She really did carry this division for those three years, and she was the division I feel like. Of course, this is an opportunity for myself and for everybody else. It’s a chance to kind of mix up the roster a bit more. Maybe put people in the mix that haven’t been for a while.”
Storm has been out of action since her win over Marina Shafir at AEW Revolution 2026. Storm was also involved in a pull-apart with Ronda Rousey at the show, but was later not cleared for Dynamite and is expected to be away for a significant period. The reason for her absence has not been disclosed.
Hayter continued:
“This is a process for everyone. We’re constantly learning. We are all at different parts of our careers and we’ve been at AEW for different lengths of time. So I think it really is the perfect moment to just switch things up and give things a try. It’s never a bad thing to try things out. And if it doesn’t work or it doesn’t go well, if it doesn’t feel good, you can always do something else. That’s the beauty of wrestling.”
Hayter previously held the AEW Women’s World title from November 19, 2022, when she defeated Storm at Full Gear that year, until she dropped it back to Storm at Double or Nothing on May 28, 2023.
Hayter’s full interview with The Takedown on SI.com is available here.
John LaRocca and Garrett Gonzales return with a brand-new Fight Game to discuss some of the most topical things going on in pro wrestling this week.
They gave out their thumbs up and thumbs down before jumping into two main topics:
The first is about the return of Chris Jericho to AEW. What does he have left and why did he choose AEW over WWE?
Then, they focused on the Gunther vs. Seth Rollins match at WrestleMania 42, which John predicted last week, as well as the newly-made WrestleMania 42 matches.
They finished up with their Observe This segment, talking about stories from Dave Meltzer’s 1985 Observer Book. They went over the very first WrestleMania, gave thoughts from the rewatch, and also discussed Dave’s comments from 1985.
The AEW Women’s World title will be on the line at next Sunday’s AEW Dynasty as Thekla will defend against former champion Jamie Hayter.
Hayter laid out the challenge on Thursday’s Collision in a backstage segment with Mina Shirakawa and Alex Windsor at her side. The three defeated Thekla and the Sisters of Sin on Wednesday’s Dynamite in the last chapter of their feud.
Thekla’s AEW debut came at Hayter’s expense but the match took a while to be made as Hayter missed time with an injury. The two had their first singles match at last October’s WrestleDream where Hayter came out on top.
Hayter’s only title run ended at May 2023’s Double or Nothing in a quick loss to Toni Storm after which she was out for a lengthy period due to injuries. Thekla will be looking for her fourth successful title defense.
In another new addition, Hayter’s Brawling Birds teammate Alex Windsor will take on Marina Shafir on the Zero Hour pre-show.

AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla defends against Jamie Hayter
AEW’s Jamie Hayter recently opened up and addressed the criticism narrative that both men and women wrestlers face.
In a recent interview with Soundsphere Magazine, Hayter opened up on the progress women’s wrestling has experienced in the last few years. While Hayter claimed that there have been changes, she persisted in the available room for improvement.
“There’s been a lot of changes for the better, but I can’t sit here and be like, ‘It’s so great now!’ because there’s just so much more work that can be done. But I can’t say that there haven’t been changes, because there have – and all the women have worked so hard for them. But there’s still stuff to be done.”
Calling out how women wrestlers are often more criticized than their male counterparts, Hayter added, “I feel like as a woman, we are probably under the microscope a lot more than men are. If you have a bad match, then it’s like ‘Oh my god, you’re the worst wrestler ever’. Whereas a guy could have a bad match and it’s like, ‘Oh well’, or if you don’t look a certain way, then they don’t like that either.”
Hayter, 30, is currently in a tag-team with fellow British wrestler, Alex Windsor. Known as The Brawling Birds, they recently defeated The IInspiration (Cassie Lee & Jessie McKay) on their Dynamite debut on March 4, 2026.

One more behind the scenes moment. This gentleman approached us while doing bridal portraits kindly asking for an autograph. Sydney gave the biggest smile and said ‘of course! 2025 was the best year of my life, and so much of that is thanks to all of you. Dreams came true, goals became reality, we made history together, and we lived moments I will never forget. Hearing the crowd chant ‘La Primera,’ seeing signs with my name, and feeling that energy night after night… it’s unforgettable.
Your support, your love, and your motivation pushed me to keep going, to grow, and to dream even bigger. I know where I come from, I know where I’m going, and with pride I can say it: I am the WWE Women’s World Champion.
Thank you for standing with me, and thank you for believing in me.
Especially with this new AMC deal, I was there when we got the news that we’d be on Fox Sports West, whatever it was at 4 pm on Friday, whatever. But that was TV, and it was an hour, but it was TV. We were thrilled. Then hearing that we’re going to Spike network television, massive. Yeah, this is even bigger. There’s so much excitement. Like I said, TNA’s strength has always been its locker room. Just the work ethic of the guys in the locker room, management changes and all that, but that attitude has always been there. And this team, this crew we got there, the management team, everybody on the roster, is just a joy to be around. And again, a united front all wanting the exact same thing.
Editor’s Note: The following is an opinion-based preview and reflects that of the author and not the website.
Another year in the books, friends. All in all, it was a pretty rough one for, well, just about everyone. But we soldier on, marching slowly into the sea. As always, a sincere thank you to anyone who’s read even a single word I’ve written over the past 365 days and an extra thanks to the site editors who keep letting me do this.
Extra, extra thanks to my wonderful wife, my sounding board, who patiently listens as I explain why Diddy is somehow a talking point on “the wrestling show that’s somehow always on.” I love everyone, but love her most of all.
With all that said, let’s run down the final big AEW show of the year: tonight’s Worlds End from Chicago, Illinois (8 PM PPV start time).
Continental Classic semifinals & finals
If you’re like me and toil away in the white collar mines, this is also the season of end-of-year check-ins: a famously delightful and productive exercise (sic). Personally, it’s the highlight of my year, especially if you’re someone I work with and happen to be reading this (I actually like my job very much).
In that spirit, it feels like the right moment to check in on the remaining four wrestlers and where they stand now and going forward.
Jon Moxley: The formerly loathed leader of the Death Riders is dangerously close to being loved again. This run was supposed to burn off goodwill and to sandpaper the audience into rejecting him. Instead, it reminded everyone why he’s the company’s emotional constant. He bleeds, he loses, he stays true to himself and keeps going. That still plays. Moxley will be embraced again; it’s just a matter of how loud it’s going to be when it happens.
Konosuke Takeshita: He’s already held the International Championship and the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, but he’s still circling something bigger. Takeshita’s problem has never been credibility; it’s been timing and commitment. If 2026 isn’t the year AEW finally lets Takeshita define himself outside of utility, matches of the night, and faction warfare, then the promotion risks turning inevitability into a missed opportunity.
Kyle Fletcher: Same question as Takeshita — How long can they reasonably hold off crowning him World champion? That’s no longer a rhetorical question. Fletcher has crossed the line from “promising” to “ready” and every month he isn’t positioned as one of the absolute top stars feels more deliberate rather than patient. The Don Callis association has done its job. The reps are there. The confidence is through the roof. Everything one would need to be a champion exists inside the young Aussie. At some point, AEW has to decide whether Fletcher is the pillar he is, or just another name they were high on for a while. The real challenge will be balancing his ascent with Takeshita’s without sacrificing either.
Kazuchika Okada: We know what Okada is in AEW. He’s settled into a reliable upper-mid card act that, on occasion, can reach back and create something great. He isn’t asked to do that often, nor does he seem to have a particular interest in doing so. There might be another classic or two left in him, but they’ll be fewer and far between.
Predictions: Fletcher over Mox, Okada over Takeshita, Fletcher over Okada to win the CC
Mixed Nuts Mayhem: Death Riders (Claudio Castagnoli, Daniel Garcia, Wheeler Yuta & Marina Shafir) vs. The Conglomeration (Mark Briscoe, Orange Cassidy & Roderick Strong) and Toni Storm
A match called “Mixed Nuts Mayhem” (!?!?!?!?) was added on Christmas Day. I will not be previewing it. There are limits. The sickest thing Tony Khan has ever done.
Prediction: I abstain.
Darby Allin vs. Gabe Kidd
The older I get, the saltier I become. That’s not exactly a profound or unique statement, but a true one. I have less and less patience for the Gabe Kidd type. The repeated insistence that he is, in fact, a madman? None of it works for me, brother.
As the year went on, it became clear that Kenny Omega made their Wrestle Kingdom match work through the sheer force of his own greatness. The man held together by tape and love dragged an incredible match out of a slightly above-average wrestler. There’s a non-zero chance that was the last ‘Kenny Omega Match’ we’re going to get. Gabe Kidd! January optimism turned December disappointment — same as it ever was.
Allin occupies a rare space in wrestling. He exists almost entirely outside of the World title scene yet constantly elevates whatever he’s involved with. He’s now the “big name” others are brought in to have big matches with. He has become a true attraction. This little freak somehow achieved a 99th-percentile outcome before his body gave out which is a remarkable talent.
Prediction: Allin
AEW World Tag Team Champions FTR defend against Bang Bang Gang in a Chicago street fight
Austin Gunn has, no pun intended, a bit of the juice. He can be corny, funny, serious, and he can come out to “Many Men.” Once he figured out who he was as a performer, the in-ring work followed. Watching someone put it together in real time is always a treat, and it’s clear who the breakout star of his family is.
The Bang Bang Gang are fun, loud, and still figuring out how seriously they want to be taken. FTR has long since solved that problem. A street fight narrows the talent gap temporarily. It lets Juice Robinson’s manic charisma shine through and gives Gunn more room to lean into his natural swagger.
Eventually, this becomes what most FTR matches are: a lesson in timing, positioning, and why fundamentals still matter, even when the rules might not.
Prediction: FTR
AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions Babes of Wrath defend against Mercedes Mone & Athena
The Babes of Wrath have become something surprisingly compelling. They’re a team built on vibes, volume, and Willow Nightingale’s undeniability. Harley Cameron certainly brings an energy, though a brand that I grow less fond of as time passes, but this act only works because Willow is a genuine star hiding inside a fun enough gimmick. At some point, that tension between her joy for life and drive for success must be resolved, or she’ll never reach the heights she deserves.
Across the ring are two wrestlers who seem like they wandered in from a more serious division. Mercedes Mone and Athena have nothing to prove. They have collectively done it all while their opponents have barely done anything. What they do need is purpose. Athena continues grinding away in largely unseen ROH. Mone floats in and out of programs, parading her collection of belts while seething about the one she can’t win. This is a transitional program, nothing more, nothing less. Even though Mercedes and Athena should never, ever lose to The Babes, somehow they will.
Prediction: Babes of Wrath retain
AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander defends against Jamie Hayter
Jamie Hayter is trapped where Kris Statlander used to live: talented, credible, clearly capable of more, but unable to shift the energy around her. Blood and Guts was a proper spectacle, but that was a group effort. Her injury layoff didn’t just stall her momentum; it erased it. The in-ring work still hits. The strikes are still crispy. Between the bells remains vibrant, but everything surrounding it feels inert. Timing is everything in pro wrestling and Hayter’s timing has been cruel.
Statlander is no longer a what-if. She’s established. She’s bona fide. She wrestles like someone who belongs at the very top. Her reign has been about legitimacy more than spectacle. It’s solid more than spectacular. For a wrestler who spent years lost in the creative wilderness, that consistency is everything.
If you’re frustrated with Hayter’s position, Statlander is the proof of concept. This is what making it out the other side looks like. Hayter doesn’t need to win to benefit here (though it wouldn’t hurt); she needs to remind people who she is. Statlander needs to keep doing what she’s been doing: beating excellent wrestlers clean and stacking wins.
Prediction: Statlander
AEW World Champion Samoa Joe defends against Swerve Strickland, Hangman Page and MJF in a four-way
Strip away the noise, the borrowed outrage, the winking-at-the-camera seriousness, and what you’re left with is a ridiculous amount of star power sharing one ring. That’s the frustrating part. This didn’t need help.
Samoa Joe is gravity. He warps the match simply by standing there, turning every exchange into something consequential. Swerve is violence with intent, a main eventer who has long since crossed the moral event horizon and never looked back. Hangman remains AEW’s emotional barometer, even when his righteousness becomes something more interesting and dangerous. MJF is still the company’s great disruptor, incapable of existing in a scene without bending it toward himself, sometimes for better, often for worse.
If we could wipe away the last few weeks of Diddy-related promo work, this match would be much better served. All they needed to do was ring the bell for this to feel special. I can’t shake the feeling that we’re in for another MJF title reign, especially with Dynamite Diamond ring wearing Bandido waiting for the winner on January 14.
After getting injured during this month’s first-ever women’s Blood and Guts match, former AEW Women’s World Champion Jamie Hayter has her in-ring return date set — but not for AEW.
Hayter will be returning to familiar grounds with London’s Pro Wrestling EVE promotion as she will team with Session Moth Marina to take on EVE Champion RHIO and Alexxis Falcon. The date was announced earlier this week with the match itself official Sunday.
The show entitled Let’s Slam Santa is set for Friday, December 5 in Walthamstow, London.
AEW has two dates before the EVE event: this Wednesday’s dual Dynamite/Collision taping in Nashville, Tennessee, and the following Wednesday’s Dynamite in Fishers, Indiana. That leaves the possibility open she will compete in AEW prior to the EVE booking.
In the aforementioned Blood and Guts match, Hayter took a chair shot throw from Megan Bayne which was reported to have chipped some teeth and “messed” Hayter’s face up according to our Bryan Alvarez.
Hayter hasn’t been on TV since and wasn’t part of this past week’s push to Full Gear or the pay-per-view itself.
For the first time, the show saw not only one, but two, of the double cage matches as the women got their opportunity for the first time. One of those women — Jamie Hayter — suffered undisclosed injuries to her face and teeth after taking a thrown chair shot in the corner from Megan Bayne while holding a trash can lid.
Alvarez said her face and teeth “are all messed up.” Fightful Select had reported after the show that the former AEW Women’s World Champion may have chipped teeth.
On the men’s side, Alvarez said Darby Allin is fine despite being thrown through a flaming table during the men’s Blood and Guts match. As Allin was rolling to safety after the spot, fire was visible on his back.
Even though he wasn’t involved in either match, Powerhouse Hobbs survived his falls count anywhere bout with Hangman Page despite taking a hard bump on his tailbone on the outside of the ring. Alvarez said Hobbs is also fine.
A regular name in the early events of Pro-Wrestling: EVE, Jamie Hayter has wrestled just once for the promotion since the pandemic. Now, however, the company has announced that she will be returning to EVE next month.
The announcement came after the main event of Friday night’s show, entitled EVE 141: Elite Encounters. Rhio defeated Nyla Rose with a package piledriver to win the EVE championship:
— EVE – Riot Grrrls of Wrestling (@ProWrestlingEVE) November 7, 2025
Afterwards, Session Moth Martina appeared to challenge Rhio and Alexxis Falcon to a tag team match at EVE’s Let’s Slam Santa event on December 5 at Big Penny Social in London. She then announced that Hayter would be her partner.
— EVE – Riot Grrrls of Wrestling (@ProWrestlingEVE) November 7, 2025
This will be Hayter’s first match in EVE since February of this year, when she defeated Alex Windsor at EVE 131: Multiverse Rumble.
Rose was not the only AEW talent to appear on the EVE card. Kris Statlander defeated Yuu and Anita Vaughan in a three-way to retain the EVE International title, while Willow Nightingale defeated Lucy Sky in a singles match.
In somewhat of an upset, The Sisters of Sin advanced in the first round of the inaugural AEW Women’s Tag Team title tournament.
Julia Hart & Skye Blue picked up the win over rivals Jamie Hayter & Queen Aminata during Wednesday’s Fright Night edition of AEW Dynamite. The win was aided by Thekla attacking Hayter outside the ring, leading to the pinfall on Aminata by Blue inside the ring.
It’s the first traditional tag team win for Blue and Hart since March 2024. They will face the winners of Mercedes Mone & Athena vs. Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron.
Later on, it was confirmed the Mone/Athena vs. Nightingale/Cameron bout will take place on next Wednesday’s Dynamite. That was made official Wednesday after Nightingale and Cameron made the save for AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander as Mone and Athena were beating her down in the ring.
