El Hijo del Vikingo suffers apparent injury during AAA on FOX match
El Hijo del Vikingo suffers apparent injury during AAA on FOX match (Image credit: AAA)

— Bryan and I will be back tonight taking more WWE news and covering Raw, Dontaku and more with Wrestling Observer Radio.

— Regarding the story by Mike Johnson which noted a star performer who was asked to and agreed to take a 50 percent pay cut, I can’t say more than that is believed to be the case and the person is not a tippy top person. There have been recent raises and there have been people asked to take cuts. I think it’s very clear who they see as the top people and none of them have been asked to take a cut.

— TKO will be announcing first quarter earnings Wednesday.

— Raw tonight is in Omaha as the go-home show for Backlash. They will have the Roman Reigns contract signing with Jacob Fatu, a Sol Ruca contract signing, the Oba Femi open challenge, Penta & Je’Von Evans vs. Ethan Page & Rusev, Finn Balor vs. JD McDonagh and an Iyo Sky angle with Asuka. They had 8,847 tickets out so it’s a solid crowd but won’t be sold out.

— Because of the UFC show and not wanting to overlap by much, Backlash Saturday is starting at 6 p.m. Eastern. UFC starts at 7 p.m., but the main card won’t start until 9 p.m. So if there is an overlap for the UFC main card and Backlash, it will be limited.

— AEW on Wednesday has a three-hour show from North Charleston. They have under 2,000 tickets out. Among the matches are Darby Allin vs. Kevin Knight for the AEW title, Dax Harwood vs Orange Cassidy and if Cassidy wins, the Conglomeration gets a tag title match and if dax wins, FTR & Tommaso Ciampa get a trios title shot, Jon Moxley vs. Juice Robinson for the Continental title, and Mina Shirakawa & Harley Cameron vs. Hikaru Shida & Kris Statander. They only had 1,739 tickets out, so coming off the best Dynamite crowd in the U.S. since 2024, they return and will be among the lower Dynamite crowds in history.

— Saturday’s UFC 328 show from the Prudential Center with Khamzat Chimaev defending the middleweight title against Sean Strickland and Joshua Van defending the flyweight title against Tatsuro Taira has 15,556 tickets out. It’s about 1,800 shy of capacity.

— From today’s Donaku show, Mistico & El Desperado won the IWGP jr. tag titles from Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita, meaning in the last year Mistico has held titles in AEW, MLW, PWR, CMLL and New Japan. Ospreay & Great O’Khan & Henare won the Never trios titles over Hirooki Goto & Yoshi-Hashi & Oleg Bolton when O’Khan pinned Yoshi-Hashi. Callum Newman retained the IWGP title in the main event over Shingo Takagi. Sanada returned and will challenge Konosuke Takeshita for the TV title that Takeshita retained over Chase Owens.

— Puebla tonight has an elimination match for Cinco de May with Cavernario, Difunto, Esfinge, Titan, Bishop Dyer, Diego Hill, Donovan Dijak and Ikuro Kwon., plus Dorada & Angel de Oro vs. Aries & Trevor Lee and Xelhua vs. Kushida.

— Arena Mexico on Tuesday has Mascara Dorada & Templario vs. Kushida & Yutani as the main event and a Titan vs. Flip Gordon lightning match. Last night saw a Cibernetico match with MLW and CMLL wrestlers that ended at 45:00 when Dorada beat Aries.

— El Hijo del Vikingo is awaiting results of an MRI. In his match with Mini Vikingo on Saturday in Queterago, the more famous Vikingo (who lost in a giant upset) landed badly on his shoulder coming off the top rope. He continued the match but you could see he was hurt. He is scheduled to face El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. for the Latin American title on the 5/30 show in Monterrey. Another Wagner family member, Galeno del Mal, saved Wagner from an attack by Omos on Saturday’s show.

— Blood 4 Blood, a combination of four bands and four brawls, Bare Knuckle boxing and heavy metal takes place on Wednesday night in Dayton Beach, FL, at the Ocean Center.

— Sunday’s AEW Biography episode from 8-10 p.m. will be on the Road Warriors.

— I’ve heard great things on the episode on the Von Erichs. It replays Sunday from 4-8 p.m.

— WWE referee Scott Armstrong turned 65 today. Jungle Jim Steele turns 59. Puerto Rican legend Ray Gonzalez turns 54. Dory Funk Sr., whose sons became two of the biggest international stars in history, was born on this day in 1919. Harry Fujiwara, the famed Mr. Fuji, was born on this day in 1934. Sammy Steamboat was born on this day in 1934 (thanks to Tony Richards)

— WAR’s 23rd anniversary and Hall of Fame event is 5/30 in Lima, OH at the Bradfield Community Center.

— GCW is in Milan, Italy on 5/24 with Nick Gage, Atticus Cogar, Shotzi Blackheart, Drew Parker, Joey Janela, Gringo Loco, Vipress, KJ Orso, Manders and more.

— Atlantis Jr. debuts for Pro Wrestling Revolucion on 7/18 in San Jose at Mt. Pleasant High School.

Hijo del Vikingo to confront Penta on next week’s AAA Rey de Reyes week 3

Vikingo wants to move on, and has selected his next target.

During week 2 of AAA Rey de Reyes, Dorian Roldan was seen talking on the phone with his mother while Vikingo threw a fit in the background, upset that he could never challenge for the AAA Mega title again while Dominik Mysterio was champion. He blamed Mini Vikingo for his loss in the main event of last week’s program. Roldan told him to let it go and focus on something else: Penta’s Intercontinental title. Later, it was confirmed that Vikingo would call out Penta next week.

Also scheduled for week 3 of Rey de Reyes is El Fiscal facing off against Abismo Negro again. The two have feuded for some time over the Abismo Negro name, with Fiscal being the son of the original Abismo Negro. The two met recently with Abismo winning by DQ, and later participated in a Rey de Reyes qualifier but ended up brawling to the back.

A four-way match will also take place for the AAA Cruiserweight title. Laredo Kid will defend against Jack Cartwheel, TJ Perkins, and Dragon Lee.

AAA Rey de Reyes week 3 (March 28)

  • Hijo del Vikingo calls out Penta
  • Abismo Negro vs. El Fiscal
  • AAA Cruiserweight title: Laredo Kid defends against Dragon Lee, TJ Perkins, and Jack Cartwheel

Mega title match official for AAA Rey de Reyes

The Mega title match for Rey de Reyes is official.

During Saturday’s AAA on Fox show, Dominik Mysterio appeared via video, interrupting El Hijo del Vikingo, Omos, and Dorian Roldan in the ring. He called the new incarnation of El Ojo cowards and confirmed his title match against Vikingo would take place at Rey de Reyes. He told Vikingo that he doesn’t belong, he is the king of the luchadores, and said he would embarrass him in Puebla on March 14.

On the premiere episode of AAA on Fox, Vikingo defeated El Grande Americano to become the new number one contender for the Mega title. It was Mysterio that defeated Vikingo back at Worlds Collide on September 12 to win the title for the first time.

Saturday’s show also saw the first person qualify for the Rey de Reyes tournament finals. La Parka defeated Jack Cartwheel, Apollo Crews, and Aerostar to advance to the finals. Whoever wins the four-way match will win the tournament, wield the ceremonial sword, and earn a future Mega Heavyweight title match.

  • Rey de Reyes tournament final: La Parka vs. TBA vs. TBA vs. TBA

Two new matches added to AAA Guerra de Titantes

Two new matches are set for next month’s Guerra de Titanes.

In the opening match of AAA’s Alianzas event on Friday, Jack Cartwheel defeated Chris Carter and Elio Lefleur in a three-way. After the match, it was announced that Cartwheel will meet AAA Cruiserweight Champion Laredo Kid and Je’Von Evans in a three-way match at Guerra de Titanes on December 20 in Guadalajara.

Evans earned a title match after defeating Axiom and Octagon Jr. in a three-way at the last Alianzas event.

In the main event of Friday’s show, El Grande Americano was able to beat Hijo del Vikingo after a distraction from Dragon Lee on the apron. As the two were arguing post-match, Rey Mysterio came out and attempted to mediate and announced the match between the two for Guerra de Titanes. He then attempted to get the two to shake hands. They did, but not before Vikingo slapped Lee before leaving.

AAA Guerra de Titanes (December 20)

  • Lucha Brothers vs. Dominik Mysterio & El Grande Americano
  • Hijo del Vikingo vs. Dragon Lee
  • AAA Latin American title: Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. defends against Ethan Page
  • AAA Cruiserweight title: Laredo Kid defends against Je’Von Evans and Jack Cartwheel
  • Psycho Circus vs. The Wyatt Sicks

WWE potentially spoils AAA Mega title match result

WWE has perhaps spoiled an upcoming AAA title match set to take place this weekend.

During Raw, the Chad Gable vs. El Hijo del Vikngo match for Worlds Collide was advertised for AAA’s top title, the Mega Championship. Vikingo doesn’t hold that title currently, but is set to challenge current champion Alberto El Patron this Saturday during an AAA television taping.

Alberto has held the title since August 17 of last year and has been established as the top rudo of AAA, forming an alliance with Konnan, JBL, and Dorian Roldan.

Vikingo appeared on this week’s Raw in the crowd during a Money in the Bank qualifying match pitting Gable against Dragon Lee and Penta. At one point, Gable attacked Vikingo while he was on the outside. Towards the end of the match, Gable went to the top rope but Vikingo hopped on the apron and took him out with a kick. That allowed Dragon Lee to hit a stomp, but Penta flew in and hit a destroyer on Lee to pick up the win.

Hijo del Vikingo vs. Chad Gable announced for WWE AAA Worlds Collide

A new match is set for Worlds Collide.

It was announced during Saturday Night’s Main Event that Hijo del Vikingo will take on Chad Gable in another match pitting an AAA star against a WWE star. Vikingo was also shown in the crowd during Saturday’s show in Tampa.

Recent months have seen Chad Gable feud with WWE’s luchadores, both as himself and as a masked alter-ego called El Grande Americano. At Backlash, Americano cost Penta the Intercontinental Championship after headbutting him from the top rope with a loaded mask while the referee was distracted. On the following Raw, he cost Penta another match after grabbing him through the crowd and delivering another headbutt.

The first match for Worlds Collide was announced on Friday’s SmackDown, where Legado del Fantasma will take on El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., Psycho Clown, and Pagano.

WWE AAA Worlds Collide, Saturday, June 7, 3 p.m. Eastern time on WWE’s YouTube channel —

  • Legado Del Fantasma (Santos Escobar, Angel & Berto) vs. El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., Psycho Clown & Pagano
  • Chad Gable vs. El Hijo del Vikingo

TNA says Chris Bey is in ‘good spirits’ following neck surgery

TNA has provided medical updates on Chris Bey and Hijo del Vikingo.

On Monday night, TNA posted an update on their website regarding both men who were injured during Impact tapings that took place Sunday in Detroit. TNA wrote that Bey is continuing to recover in his hospital room after undergoing neck surgery.

“Chris Bey is recovering at the hospital following surgery for the neck injury suffered Sunday night and he had an MRI procedure on Monday,” the statement read. “He was resting in his hospital room Monday night, joking, talking about Bound For Glory and in good spirits. Chris will be in Detroit for a few days and family members have joined him, along with TNA Wrestling management and wrestlers who are staying in Detroit. Chris is under professional care and supervision, and the local medical staff has been in contact with his personal doctor.”

TNA also had an update on Vikingo, who is on crutches after suffering a right knee injury. He has been treated for the injury and is now back home in Mexico.

“Vikingo returned to the Detroit hotel Sunday night after being treated at the hospital for a right knee injury,” TNA’s statement said. “He is on crutches and wearing a leg brace. Vikingo flew home to Mexico on Monday, where he will be examined and treated by his specialist.”

According to reports during the taping, Vikingo injured his knee after a corkscrew spot during a match against Trent Seven. Bey later suffered his injury after taking a neckbreaker during a tag team match against The Hardys.

Sunday Update

– Bryan and I will be back tonight covering the weekend wrestling news with Wrestling Observer Radio. We’ll also be back Monday night after Raw. We had no Garrett Gonzales show this past week but we will be doing something for the Vince McMahon documentary and perhaps some on the Dump Matsumoto series on Netflix as well later this week.

– An amber alert is out for the three-year-old son of independent wrestler Keyra. He was admitted to the hospital and needed a blood transfusion. His father, Myzteziz Jr. of AAA, was at the hospital. The two are estranged and the belief from her side is that he kidnapped the child. Keyra posted an unmasked photo of him and said police were looking for him and said he hadn’t even visited his child since they split up two years ago. Reportedly the family of Myzteziz said the child was unhealthy.

– We will have a new book out very shortly covering arguably the single most important year of U.S. pro wrestling history, 1984.

– Time Magazine will have an interview with Dana White tomorrow talking about the future of the fight business and his friendship with Donald Trump.

– IBF champion Daniel Dubois dominated and finished Anthony Joshua last night in the fifth round. The fight at Wembley Stadium announced a record attendance in the building for a sports event at 96,000.

– There was an angle on Smackdown LowDown after the show building up the Michin vs. Chelsea Green dumpster match on 10/4. Michin was being interviewed when Piper Neven attacked her with a garbage can.

– Paul Heyman was one of the key people directing the Cody Rhodes/Roman Reigns segment on Smackdown as you would figure he would be. As far as when he returns as a character, it’s expected it’ll be as a babyface and they are just waiting on the right timing.

– Yesterday was AEW day in Springfield, MA, the site of the Collision and Rampage tapings.  Mayor Dominic Sarno presided over it with talent including The Outrunners, Darby Allin, and Mark Sterling appearing.

– The El Hijo del Santo retirement tour ran Arena Ciudad in Mexico City tonight. We just got a live-in-the-building note saying it was about 20 percent full (about 4,000).

– Brock Rechsteiner, the son of Scott Steiner, a wide receiver at Jacksonville State, caught an 85-yard touchdown pass in yesterday’s 44-7 win over Mississippi State. That’s the team’s first win this season.

– A note regarding Penta & Fenix. They are still under contract to AEW. Both are leaving for WWE.  It’s not clear about Fenix still but Penta will be out of his contract shortly but right now both are still under AEW contracts.

– Indianapolis Colts player Ty Hilton threw Seth Rollins out of the stands at today’s game with the Chicago Bears. (thanks to Kevin Witt)

– Mistico this past week said he’d be doing a 20th anniversary show in Japan.

– El Hijo del Vikingo is now targeting 9/27 for his return to the ring after knee surgery.

– Ren Ayabe won All Japan’s Oudou tournament today beating Ryuki Honda in the finals in what was called a star-making performance. Honda beat Kento Miyahara earlier in the show in one semifinal and Ayabe beat Rei Saito in the other semifinal. (thanks to Gerard Di Trolio)

– Ayabe vs. Honda is the only match we were told over the weekend so far to make sure and see.

– KENTA vs. Cara Noir for the Def y title headlines the 10/27 Progress show in London.

– This is the Wednesday AEW lineup from Arthur Ashe Stadium.

El Hijo del Vikingo undergoing surgery for ruptured ligament, torn meniscus

El Hijo Del Vikingo is set to have knee surgery today.

Vikingo’s match at Arena López Mateos on February 17 was stopped early after he came down awkwardly on his right knee.

On Thursday, Vikingo revealed through Instagram stories that he is dealing with a torn meniscus and a ruptured ligament. He’s going in for surgery today and there is no timetable for his return.

La Tijera Lucha Libre posted footage of the injury to YouTube:

Our own Dave Meltzer addressed Vikingo’s injury the night it happened on Wrestling Observer Radio.

Meltzer said:

El Hijo del Vikingo injured his right knee in a match tonight, and it’s a meniscus injury as far as we know. I just got the word of a meniscus injury, that he might need surgery.

The knee was already bad. And he was probably going to need surgery at some point soon, and this may speed that up and he could be out for a pretty long length of time.

The promotion announced on Thursday that the 26-year-old will not perform on either night of GCW Homecoming in Atlantic City this weekend due to injury.

While the nature of Vikingo’s injury is unclear, the news comes just five days after he reportedly passed out backstage following AAA Triplemania XXXI Mexico City. Video of him being taken away on a stretcher was posted to social media that night.

PWInsider would later report that Vikingo was feeling sick before the match and passed out due to dehydration. He was also not expected to miss anytime.

However, many felt the situation in Mexico City was part of an angle.

Rey Fenix to challenge Hijo del Vikingo at AAA Triplemania: Mexico City

Lucha Libre AAA has revealed Hijo del Vikingo’s challenger for Triplemania XXX: Mexico City.

At a press conference on Friday, it was announced that Rey Fenix will challenge Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship at the Mexico City Triplemania event. It was said that Fenix won a vote among fans on social media to earn the right to face Vikingo.

Kenny Omega was shown as finishing in second in the fan vote. Konnan recently said on his Keepin’ it 100 podcast that Omega is unable to appear at Triplemania due to his AEW suspension.

Vikingo has been AAA Mega Champion since winning the title at Triplemania Regia last December. Fenix was previously Mega Champion from August 2018 to October 2019.

Triplemania XXX: Mexico City is being held on Saturday, October 15. It’s the last of three Triplemania pay-per-views this year celebrating the 30th edition of the event.

The full card for the PPV was announced at Friday’s press conference:

  • Mask vs. mask match (Ruleta de la Muerte finals): Pentagon Jr. vs. Villano IV
  • AAA Mega Champion Hijo del Vikingo defends against Rey Fenix
  • Hair vs. hair match: Pagano vs. Cibernetico
  • AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Taya Valkyrie defends against Kamille

  • Marvel Lucha Libre match: Team Leyenda America vs. Team Terror Purpura

Hijo del Vikingo wins AAA Mega title at Triplemania Regia

Hijo del Vikingo is the new AAA Mega Champion.

Vikingo pinned Samuray del Sol in a five-way match to determine a new champion. Others in the match included Bandido and AEW’s Bobby Fish and Jay Lethal. Vikingo won the match after pinning the former Kalisto with an inverted 450 splash. After the match, the rest of the technicos came out and celebrated with Vikingo to close out the show.

The match for Triplemania Regia was originally set to be a singles championship match between Vikingo and champion Kenny Omega for the title. However, Omega announced in a video that he would be unable to make it to Triplemania. Omega has taken time off following AEW’s Full Gear event last month in order to recover from various injuries. As a result, the multi-man match for the vacant title was set instead.

The other title match on the show saw AEW’s FTR successfully defend the AAA Tag Team titles against The Lucha Bros. (Pentagon Jr. and Fenix) in what ended up being a ladder match. Vickie Guerrero, who accompanied FTR to ringside, interfered by throwing powder at Pentagon Jr., who then fell off the ladder through a table, allowing Dax Harwood to grab the titles.

Kenny Omega vs. Hijo del Vikingo set for AAA Triplemania Regia

Kenny Omega and El Hijo del Vikingo are set to face off for the AAA Mega Championship.

At a press conference on Monday, Lucha Libre AAA announced that Omega vs. Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship will take place at Triplemania Regia on Saturday, December 4. The show is taking place at Estadio de Beisbol Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico.

Omega has held the AAA Mega Championship since defeating Fenix for the title in October 2019. He’s since had title defenses against Jack Evans, Dragon Lee, Sammy Guevara, Laredo Kid, and Andrade El Idolo.

When asked about Vikingo after that title defense against Andrade, Omega called Vikingo one of the greatest high-flyers that he’s ever seen. Omega compared him to wrestlers like Kota Ibushi, Will Ospreay, Ricochet, and Fenix, saying that Vikingo is the new special wrestler. Omega challenged Vikingo to stand in line and see if he measures up to the champ.

Cain Velasquez will be in action at Triplemania Regia, teaming with Psycho Clown & Pagano against Rey Escorpion, Black Taurus, and a surprise partner. The Lucha Brothers and Dragon Lee & Dralistico have also been announced for the show.

Luchablog notes that AAA’s Dorian Roldan said that The Lucha Brothers and Lee & Dralistico may face AAA Tag Team Champions FTR at Triplemania Regia, but AAA is still working out the details of that with AEW.
