El Hijo del Vikingo wins AAA Mega Championship

Vikingo is the new Mega Champion.

In the main event of Saturday’s AAA event in Mexico City, Vikingo defeated Alberto El Patron to win the championship for a second time. In a match filled with interference and weapons, it was ultimately Vikingo’s father, King Vikingo, that was the deciding factor of the match.

Vikingo had attempted to use a guitar Dorian Roldan had introduced into the match before being taken out. Alberto low blowed Vikingo and powerbombed him through a table. As he posed for the crowd, King Vikingo entered the ring and laid out Alberto with the guitar. This allowed Vikingo to hit the 630 splash to end Alberto’s over 288 day reign as champion.

The rest of the technico roster came out to celebrate with an emotional Vikingo to end the show.

In the United States, WWE advertised on Raw this past week that the upcoming Vikingo vs. Chad Gable match at Worlds Collide next Saturday would be for the AAA Mega title despite Vikingo not being champion at the time. The Netflix stream in Mexico did not mention the Mega title.

WWE potentially spoils AAA Mega title match result

WWE has perhaps spoiled an upcoming AAA title match set to take place this weekend.

During Raw, the Chad Gable vs. El Hijo del Vikngo match for Worlds Collide was advertised for AAA’s top title, the Mega Championship. Vikingo doesn’t hold that title currently, but is set to challenge current champion Alberto El Patron this Saturday during an AAA television taping.

Alberto has held the title since August 17 of last year and has been established as the top rudo of AAA, forming an alliance with Konnan, JBL, and Dorian Roldan.

Vikingo appeared on this week’s Raw in the crowd during a Money in the Bank qualifying match pitting Gable against Dragon Lee and Penta. At one point, Gable attacked Vikingo while he was on the outside. Towards the end of the match, Gable went to the top rope but Vikingo hopped on the apron and took him out with a kick. That allowed Dragon Lee to hit a stomp, but Penta flew in and hit a destroyer on Lee to pick up the win.

Kenny Omega AAA Mega title defense set for AEW Dynamite

The AAA Mega Championship will be on the line on AEW Dynamite this week.

AEW has announced that Kenny Omega will defend his AAA Mega title against Sammy Guevara on Dynamite this Wednesday. It will be the first time the title has been defended on Dynamite and the second time it’s been defended in AEW.

Omega became the AAA Mega Champion by defeating Fenix at Heroes Inmortales in October. He defended the title against Jack Evans on an episode of AEW Dark in November and against Dragon Lee at Triplemania Regia in December.

Omega’s third defense of the title was set to be against Laredo Kid at AAA Rey de Reyes this past weekend, but AAA announced on March 14 that the show was being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Omega and Guevara were originally scheduled to be part of the Blood and Guts match on Dynamite this week, but that match has been postponed. AEW announced that the time and circumstances aren’t right for the card they had planned for Blood and Guts and the show will instead happen when the time is right.

A confrontation between Chris Jericho and Matt Hardy has been added to this Wednesday’s Dynamite, along with Cody vs. Jimmy Havoc.
