Vikingo vs. Alberto El Patron rematch to headline AAA Triplemania Regia

Ahead of the event taking place this weekend, Lucha Libre AAA held a press conference to finalize the card for Triplemania Regia.

Two new title matches have been added to Sunday’s event in Monterrey. In the main event, El Hijo del Vikingo will put his AAA Mega Championship on the line in a rematch against Alberto El Patron. The TNA X-Division Championship will also be up for grabs at Triplemania Regia with Moose defending in a four-way match against Joe Hendry, El Mesias, and El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.

Vikingo won the Mega title from El Patron on May 31, becoming champion in time for AAA’s Worlds Collide event with WWE. He made a successful title defense against Chad Gable at that show.

AAA is in the process of being acquired by WWE with the deal expected to be finalized in the third quarter of this year. It remains to be seen whether El Patron — a former WWE World Champion as Alberto Del Rio — will be involved in any crossover to WWE given his past.

An angle took place at today’s press conference where El Patron attacked Vikingo to build up their match.

Moose, Hendry, and Nic & Ryan Nemeth are representing TNA at Sunday’s AAA show. The Nemeths will take part in a four-way match for the AAA Tag Team titles.

There have been no U.S. broadcast plans announced for Triplemania Regia. In Mexico, matches will air on Max and Space.

Here is the announced card:

AAA Triplemania Regia (Sunday, June 15) —

  • AAA Mega Champion El Hijo del Vikingo defends against Alberto El Patron
  • TNA X-Division Champion Moose defends against Joe Hendry, El Mesias, and Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. in a four-way match
  • AAA Tag Team Champions Forastero & Sanson defend against Angel & Berto, Psycho Clown & Pagano, and Nic & Ryan Nemeth in a four-way match
  • La Parka, Laredo Kid & Octagon Jr. vs. Abismo Negro Jr., Taurus & Histeria
  • AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Lady Flammer defends against Dalys and Lady Shani in a three-way match
  • Mr. Iguana, El Fiscal & Nino Hamburguesa vs. SB Kento, Takuma & Nobu San

El Hijo del Vikingo wins AAA Mega Championship

Vikingo is the new Mega Champion.

In the main event of Saturday’s AAA event in Mexico City, Vikingo defeated Alberto El Patron to win the championship for a second time. In a match filled with interference and weapons, it was ultimately Vikingo’s father, King Vikingo, that was the deciding factor of the match.

Vikingo had attempted to use a guitar Dorian Roldan had introduced into the match before being taken out. Alberto low blowed Vikingo and powerbombed him through a table. As he posed for the crowd, King Vikingo entered the ring and laid out Alberto with the guitar. This allowed Vikingo to hit the 630 splash to end Alberto’s over 288 day reign as champion.

The rest of the technico roster came out to celebrate with an emotional Vikingo to end the show.

In the United States, WWE advertised on Raw this past week that the upcoming Vikingo vs. Chad Gable match at Worlds Collide next Saturday would be for the AAA Mega title despite Vikingo not being champion at the time. The Netflix stream in Mexico did not mention the Mega title.

El Hijo del Vikingo gets involved at WWE WrestleMania 41

On the day it was announced that WWE has acquired Lucha Libre AAA, one of their top stars briefly got involved in the action at WrestleMania 41.

El Hijo del Vikingo was in the front row for Rey Fenix vs. El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) at night one of WrestleMania in Las Vegas on Saturday. Before the bell rang, there was a spot where Vikingo kicked Americano after being shoved by him at ringside. Vikingo was identified as a former AAA Champion.

During the match, Americano inserted a metal plate into his face mask and proceeded to use it as a weapon, getting the victory with a diving headbutt to Fenix. Vikingo entered the ring to check on Fenix after the match and help him to his feet.

AAA representatives Marisela Pena and Dorian Roldan were also shown on camera at WrestleMania, with Michael Cole saying WWE’s acquisition of AAA will change the landscape of lucha libre. Cole plugged the AAA & NXT Worlds Collide event that will be held in Los Angeles this June.

The announcement of the AAA acquisition was made by Paul “Triple H” Levesque during tonight’s pre-show with Vikingo, Pena, and Roldan among the personnel appearing alongside him.

Vikingo is a one-time AAA Mega Champion. In the United States, he made frequent appearances for AEW from 2023-2024. Vikingo has also competed for TNA Wrestling — and he’ll be in action at TNA’s Rebellion pay-per-view later this month.

Rey Mysterio was originally scheduled to be Americano’s WrestleMania opponent, but Fenix replaced him in the match after Mysterio suffered an injury on SmackDown last night. Dave Meltzer reports that Mysterio’s injury is a torn groin.

El Hijo del Vikingo comments on injury, hopes to recover in a few weeks

El Hijo del Vikingo is staying positive while he faces another injury.

While making his PROGRESS Wrestling debut on Sunday, Vikingo suffered an injury to his left leg while facing Kid Lykos II. The match was stopped after Vikingo’s injury and ended in a no contest. PROGRESS Wrestling noted that Vikingo would be checked out by their medical team, and the promotion was hoping for a speedy recovery.

Vikingo made an Instagram post after the match sharing a clip of the spot where he got hurt. He’s hoping that he will be able to recover in a few weeks.

“God knows why he puts these tests on me, I have faith that it will be a few weeks,” Vikingo wrote. “Thank you very much to all the fans in London for such a wonderful welcome.”

In another post on his Instagram stories, Vikingo shared a photo of himself on the flight home to Mexico with a caption that included the words “always positive.”

Vikingo was originally supposed to make his PROGRESS debut in November, but that was pushed back a month so that he could fully recover from an injury that he suffered in October. Before that injury, Vikingo spent seven months out of action from February-September due to knee surgery.

PROGRESS said that Vikingo’s match against Lykos was a “classic in the making” before he got hurt, and they cannot wait to have the Lucha Libre AAA star return soon.

El Hijo del Vikingo injured at PROGRESS event, match stopped early

El Hijo del Vikingo suffered an apparent injury on Sunday.

He was wrestling Kid Lykos II at today’s PROGRESS Chapter 175: Unboxing VII in London when he landed awkwardly on what was either a code red or sunset flip attempt. The referee put up the “X” sign, and Vikingo was helped to the back. Fan reports state he was favoring his knee.

PROGRESS wrote:

“Vikingo vs Lykos II was stopped early due to an unfortunate injury to Vikingo. He will get checked over by our medical team, and we hope for a speedy recovery, and a return to a PROGRESS ring in the future.”

Lykos II would later write, “El Hijo Del Vikingo is one of the best wrestlers in the world and it was an honour to share the ring with him today. The way things ended was of course the biggest possible shame and I have nothing but hope that we’re able to wrestle again soon when he’s back to 100%.”

Vikingo has dealt with multiple injuries throughout 2024. He missed seven months with a ruptured ligament and torn meniscus he suffered in February at an event in Mexico. Shortly after returning in September, Vikingo was injured at TNA’s October TV tapings in Detroit. His match against Trent Seven at the tapings was also stopped early after Vikingo landed awkwardly on a diving corkscrew to the outside. As a result, he was pulled from his scheduled PROGRESS debut against Cara Noir a few weeks later. However, Vikingo later revealed that he had avoided damage to his ligament or muscle and was back in the ring the following month.

Thursday Update

WWE

  • It’s been announced that, in the United Kingdom and Spain, Saturday Night’s Main Event will air live on YouTube on December 14.
  • While speaking with TV Insider, Trish Stratus gave her thoughts on WWE adding Women’s United States and Intercontinental title belts:
    • I think it’s amazing. This is exactly what we wanted back in the day. We wanted the same opportunities and exposure as the men. Now this is a big step to have that level of competition. Having the titles means you’re going to have matches for those titles. There is room for multiple feuds over the titles and influx of characters. It creates opportunities for more characters on the show, who happen to be female.
  • TV Insider asked Stratus if there’s anyone from today’s roster that she especially enjoys watching:
    • Nia Jax, I’m so happy she came back. She has a great presence. She has been owning it. I really enjoy watching her. I have this weird thing where I don’t think I could fully retire until I’m rag-dolled by her. Is that weird? Imagine that? Then I can retire [laughs].
  • Cody Rhodes told Jazzy’s World TV that Bayley is one of the current locker room leaders in WWE:
    • Here’s the thing I don’t think people know about Bayley – she’s probably the actual current locker room leader. Like, if you’ve got a captain, you know, the ‘C [for captain]’ on the jersey, it’s probably her and Randy Orton. In terms of, you need something done, ‘Hey, such and such doesn’t need to be late anymore. Hey, we need energy for this show.’ She’s the locker room leader – and she should be.

El Hijo del Vikingo pulled from PROGRESS Wrestling debut

Though El Hijo del Vikingo has returned from injury, he will not be making his United Kingdom debut this weekend.

Vikingo was supposed to debut for PROGRESS Wrestling in a match against Cara Noir in London on November 24, but the promotion has announced that Vikingo will no longer be appearing. PROGRESS is working to book Vikingo for a new date and hopes to have him debut soon.

“El Hijo Del Vikingo injury update: Despite recovering he will not be ready to compete to the high level he would want for a European debut,” PROGRESS wrote. “We are working on a new date with Vikingo and hope to see him very soon in a PROGRESS ring, hopefully before year end.”

After spending seven months out of action following knee surgery, Vikingo returned in September but suffered another injury at a TNA Wrestling television taping on October 27. He avoided major injury but expected to miss a few weeks. Vikingo then made his return to the ring at an event for Lucha Libre AAA on November 17.

Vikingo avoids major injury, gives timetable for in-ring return

El Hijo del Vikingo avoided a major injury at last Sunday’s TNA Impact TV taping and said he expects to be back in action in less than a month.

The former AAA Mega Champion took to Instagram Thursday to provide the update, saying the injury in his match with Trent Seven that caused him to be stretchered out “did not affect any ligament or muscle.”

“I have to rest for 5 days while the swelling goes down, then start rehabilitation until I am 100% recovered, I will be out for 15-to-20 days,” he wrote (translated from Spanish), thanking TNA, AAA, and the fans who reached out to him.

He sustained the injury following a corkscrew to Seven on the outside of the ring that caused the match to be stopped.

After being out of action for more than seven months, Vikingo made his in-ring return for AAA in a late-September trios match. The 27-year-old hadn’t wrestled since February when he suffered a torn meniscus and ruptured ligament in a match that same month in Mexico. He wrestled against TNA X-Division Champion Mike Bailey at Saturday’s Bound for Glory pay-per-view.

Vikingo, Chris Bey both taken out on stretchers during TNA TV taping

This story has been updated.

El Hijo del Vikingo and Chris Bey had to be taken out on stretchers in separate matches during Sunday’s TNA Wrestling TV taping in Detroit, Michigan.

As of now, no update on either man has been released.

Details are still unconfirmed for what the Vikingo injury could be, but he was wrestling Trent Seven and according to fan reports, the referee threw up the “X” sign after he tried to hit a corkscrew on Seven while he was outside of the ring. From one report, he landed awkwardly in his leg.

He was later taken out on a stretcher as seen below:

After being out of action for more than seven months, Vikingo made his in-ring return for AAA in a late-September trios match. The 27-year-old was out of action since February when he suffered a torn meniscus and ruptured ligament in a match that same month in Mexico.

Later on, Bey was put in a neck brace and taken out following either a possible clash of heads or off a neckbreaker spot in a match he and Ace Austin were having with the Hardys.

El Hijo del Vikingo set for action on TNA Impact

Image: AEW

For the first time since this past January, former AAA Mega Champion El Hijo del Vikingo will be in action on this Thursday’s edition of TNA Impact.

Vikingo fell in defeat to X-Division Champion “Speedball” Mike Bailey at Saturday’s Bound for Glory pay-per-view. This will be his first TNA TV match since a six-way in January, but his opponent has yet to be named.

In what promises to be a hard-hitting tag team match, Hammerstone & Jake Something will battle former TNA World Champion Sami Callihan & PCO. Hammerstone, Something and Callihan were all involved in the Call Your Shot gauntlet match Saturday while PCO defended his Digital Media and International titles against Matt Cardona in a Monster’s Ball match.

In another tag team match, First Class’ AJ Francis & KC Navarro will take on former TNA Tag Team Champions The Rascalz (Trey Miguel & Zachary Wentz). All four men were part of the gauntlet match as well.

Here’s the current lineup being taped Sunday in Detroit:

  • El Hijo Del Vikingo in action
  • First Class (AJ Francis & KC Navarro) vs. The Rascalz (Trey Miguel & Zachary Wentz)
  • Hammerstone & Jake Something vs. Sami Callihan & PCO

Alberto El Patron to defend AAA Mega title vs. El Hijo del Vikingo

El Hijo del Vikingo is set to challenge the former Alberto Del Rio for the AAA Mega Championship next month.

AAA has revealed most of the lineup for their Guerra de Titanes event scheduled for November 10, with Alberto El Patron defending the Mega title against Vikingo atop the card. Dorian Roldan will be in El Patron’s corner, while Latin Lover will second the challenger.

Vikingo was forced to vacate the Mega title earlier this year after suffering a ruptured knee ligament and torn meniscus. Nic Nemeth defeated El Patron to win the vacant championship in April at a Triplemania XXXII event, then El Patron defeated Nemeth for the title at a Triplemania XXXII event in August.

Vikingo made his return to the ring for AAA on September 29 after missing seven months of action due to his injury. Currently the acclaimed high-flyer is touring Japan for GLEAT.

The announced lineup for the Sunday, November 10 AAA Guerra de Titanes show:

  • AAA Mega Champion Aberto El Patron defends against El Hijo del Vikingo
  • AAA Latin American Champion Octagon Jr. defends against El Mesias
  • Laredo Kid, Drago & Dinamico vs. Nobu San, Kento & Takuma
  • Lights out match: Vampiro, Mecha Wolf & Pagano vs. Abismo Negro, Psicosis & Taurus
  • Reina Dorada & El Fiscal vs. Havok & Crazzy Steve
  • Two matches TBA

El Hijo del Vikingo returns from injury at AAA TV tapings

El Hijo del Vikingo wrestled his first match in over seven months this weekend.

The 27-year-old took part in AAA’s TV tapings on Sunday in Monterrey. He teamed with Laredo Kid & Octogon Jr. in a win over Belcegor, Taurus & Emperador Azteca.

Vikingo had been out of action since having surgery in February for a torn meniscus and ruptured ligament. He suffered the injury in a match for AULL (Alianza Universal De Lucha Libre) on February 17.

The former AAA Mega Champion is also booked on an upcoming GLEAT show in Japan. He is scheduled to team with Soma Watanabe against Ricochet & CIMA on Sunday, October 5 in Osaka.

House of Glory has also announced that Vikingo will wrestle Nic Nemeth on its show on October 18.

Following his injury, Vikingo vacated the AAA Mega Championship after holding it for 833 days and defending it successfully 23 times. In April, Nic Nemeth beat Alberto El Patron to win the vacated title at Triplemania XXXII: Monterrey. However, he lost it to El Patron at Triplemania XXXII: Mexico City on August 17.

GLEAT reveals Ricochet’s match for Japan return

GLEAT has revealed Ricochet’s match for his upcoming return to Japan.

Earlier this week, the promotion announced that AEW star Ricochet would be competing for them alongside CIMA in Osaka on Sunday, October 6. It’s now been confirmed that the match will be Ricochet & CIMA vs. El Hijo del Vikingo & Soma Watanabe.

CIMA was Ricochet’s mentor earlier in his career, with them holding tag team titles in Dragon Gate. They have not teamed together since 2017. Ricochet joined WWE in 2018 but left the company this summer. He signed with AEW following his WWE departure, debuting at All In.

Vikingo has been out of action since February due to injury but is now returning to the ring. This tag match will be the first time he and Ricochet have ever faced each other.

In a recent interview on the Battleground Podcast, Ricochet said he still has a lot of goals he wants to accomplish in Japan for NJPW, including competing in a G1 tournament.

“I already won the Best of the Super Junior [in 2014], so I feel like now I should upgrade my goals to the G1, for sure,” he said. “And actually, obviously, there’s still a lot of things in New Japan that I didn’t get to accomplish that I still plan on accomplishing.”

El Hijo del Vikingo vacates AAA Mega Championship

The AAA Mega Championship is now vacant as El Hijo del Vikingo has vacated it due to injury.

Vikingo underwent surgery last month for a torn meniscus and a ruptured ligament he suffered in a match at Arena López Mateos on February 17. There is no timetable for his return.

AAA has announced that a new champion will be crowned at Triplemania XXXII Monterrey on April 27.

A triple threat took place on Saturday’s show from Mexico City with the winner qualifying for the AAA Mega Championship match at Triplemania Monterrey. Alberto El Patron defeated Cibernetico and Psycho Clown to earn a spot in the title match next month.

Vikingo’s title reign finishes at 833 days and 23 total defenses. He is now the second straight Mega Champion to vacate the title due to injuries after a multi-year reign.

Former champion Kenny Omega relinquished the belt in November 2021 after having held the title since beating Rey Fenix for it at AAA Heroes Immortales XIII on October 19, 2019.

El Hijo del Vikingo undergoing surgery for ruptured ligament, torn meniscus

El Hijo Del Vikingo is set to have knee surgery today.

Vikingo’s match at Arena López Mateos on February 17 was stopped early after he came down awkwardly on his right knee.

On Thursday, Vikingo revealed through Instagram stories that he is dealing with a torn meniscus and a ruptured ligament. He’s going in for surgery today and there is no timetable for his return.

La Tijera Lucha Libre posted footage of the injury to YouTube:

Our own Dave Meltzer addressed Vikingo’s injury the night it happened on Wrestling Observer Radio.

Meltzer said:

El Hijo del Vikingo injured his right knee in a match tonight, and it’s a meniscus injury as far as we know. I just got the word of a meniscus injury, that he might need surgery.

The knee was already bad. And he was probably going to need surgery at some point soon, and this may speed that up and he could be out for a pretty long length of time.
