Trish Stratus ‘blown away’ by WWE NXT star Sol Ruca

WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus is impressed by what she’s seen from NXT’s Sol Ruca.

During WrestleMania weekend, SiriusXM spoke with Stratus and asked which current star makes her want to return for one more match. Stratus named Ruca as an opponent she’d be interested in facing, though any return for Stratus would be storyline-dependent.

“When I went to John Cena’s final match, I got to see Sol Ruca up close and personal — and I was blown away,” Stratus said. “A lot of great talent. It’s not just the talent, it’s the storyline, it’s the characters, so I need to think on that one a little bit.”

Ruca, Oba Femi, and Je’Von Evans were the NXT talent that WWE chose to spotlight on the undercard of Cena’s final match last December. At the show, Ruca picked up a win against Bayley.

On the post-WrestleMania 42 edition of Raw this Monday, Ruca was in action ahead of a potential full-fledged call-up to the main roster. Ruca then faced Zaria in a Last Woman Standing match on NXT, which ended with Ruca taking a scary looking fall as her head smashed off a table that did not break.

Stratus competed for WWE three times in 2025 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her debut. She remains open to a return if WWE has the right idea that would be interesting to the fans and help elevate her opponent.

SiriusXM also asked Lita and Kaitlyn who they’d want to face if they returned for one more match, with Lita naming IYO SKY and Kaitlyn naming AJ Lee.

Trish Stratus addresses possible WWE return

WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus remains open to returning to the ring under the right conditions.

In 2025, Stratus worked three WWE matches in celebration of the 25th anniversary of her debut. There were plans for Stratus to do more with the company, but that changed when her mother passed away in August after battling cancer. Stratus told The Takedown on SI that she is still open to a return if the right story and opponent are there.

“I need to see the landscape,” she said. “I’m very story, storyline driven. And for me, is it going to be interesting for the fans? Is it something they want to see? Is it going to elevate someone? And of course, there’s like the storyline behind it. I love the story, I want to make sure it makes sense and I want to make sure the landscape makes sense for me to enter into.”

Stratus took part in the 2025 women’s Royal Rumble match and then worked two other bouts, teaming with Tiffany Stratton at Elimination Chamber before the two faced off at Evolution. Stratton was the WWE Women’s Champion at the time and defeated Stratus to retain.

During the Friday of WrestleMania 42 weekend, Stratus is set to appear at the WWE World convention in Las Vegas. Stratus has also partnered with Flanker Kitchen & Sports Bar for a week of events. She’ll be joined by Mickie James, Lilian Garcia, Jazz, and Lisa Marie Varon (Victoria) and has crafted her own menu that will be offered at the restaurant.

Stratus initially retired from the ring in 2006 but has been back for multiple WWE runs over the years. She was inducted into the company’s Hall of Fame in 2013.

Trish Stratus answers if she will induct Stephanie McMahon into WWE Hall of Fame

With Stephanie McMahon headlining the 2026 WWE Hall of Fame, wrestling legend Trish Stratus has answered questions about possibly inducting McMahon.

13 years after Trish Stratus’ induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, it is now time for McMahon to join the Hall of Fame class. With this year’s induction ceremony also including names such as AJ Styles and The Demolition, it is currently unclear who would induct McMahon.

Recently appearing on KLAS 8 News Now to promote her First Crush, Stratus was asked if she would return the favor by inducting McMahon this year. “I’ll have to see if I’m not at Flanker. I’ll have to see,” Stratus added.

First Crush by Stratus is about providing fans with an exclusive pop-up merchandise shop, themed food and beverage offerings, meet and greets, podcast recordings, panels, fireside chats, and surprise moments throughout the Wrestlemania week

Stratus, 50, is scheduled to be at Flanker Kitchen/Sports Bar in Las Vegas during the WrestleMania 42 weekend. This year’s Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on April 17th at Dolby Live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  • During an appearance on the Beyond The Bell podcast, Nia Jax gave a kayfabe response to CM Punk’s promo line from Raw where Punk said he’s going to bury Roman Reigns next to his father Sika:
    • I think small men bark loud. And so in that moment right there, he was probably feeling a little confident. It’s funny because you see him walk away right after he says that line. That doesn’t bother me because I know what my family is physically capable of. We’ve shown it over the last three decades what our family is capable of, the Samoan Dynasty. So that’s fine. He can speak all he wants. But when it comes down to it, the person who’s going to be reigning over Phil will be none other than The OTC.
  • Paul “Triple H” Levesque shared the official poster for Punk and Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 42.
  • Ahead of their upcoming WrestleMania match, Stephanie Vaquer and Liv Morgan both attended a training session at Natalya and TJ Wilson’s Dungeon last night. To keep kayfabe, they did not appear in photos together. Natalya tweeted that the session might have been her favorite ever at the facility: “Maybe the best practice we’ve ever had in The Dungeon. Four hours of sweat equity. So incredibly proud of this group tonight.”
  • Trish Stratus told Wrestlezone that there were plans for her to do more with WWE last year, but her mother passing away changed that. Stratus would like to come back and get closure on her career:
    • The 25th anniversary year was a special year. [WWE and I] worked together to see how we can celebrate it. It turned out really good with the homecoming moment, where I could team up with Tiffy. Being part of Evolution, all women’s pay-per-view, obviously, was amazing. Coming back to the Royal Rumble as 25. So, we kind of like plotted it out.
    • My mom got sick last year, and she passed. So there were plans [for more]. So, I do think there should be a bit of a finale moment. I’m very much about closure. So I feel like that I would need a little bit of closure. And I think maybe you guys need some closure on your Stratusfaction as well. Maybe.
  • Bianca Belair received flowers from Charlie (former WWE wrestler Dakota Kai) as she recovers from finger surgery.

  • AEW produced an eight-minute video with Renee Paquette & RJ City detailing everything that new fans need to know about the promotion:
    • Looking to join in as a fan of All Elite Wrestling, but not quite sure where to start? Do you have a friend who wants to become a fan and you’re trying to help them out? We’re here for you. Here’s everything you need to know about AEW in 8 minutes to get you up to speed, from our most prominent wrestlers to our championships and more.
  • Dustin Rhodes’ dog, a mastiff named Beast, won an award at Crufts Dog Show in the United Kingdom.
  • Mick Foley will be doing an auction at his upcoming comedy shows to raise money for Brian Knobbs, who has been battling health issues for a while and shared last month that he was back in the hospital due to an infection:
    • In our dysfunctional, yet loving extended professional wrestling family, I believe we have to look out for each other, especially when one of us is going through a difficult time. Brian is going through that type of time now and can use a little help from all of us.
    • Knobs is one of those legends in wrestling that other legends talk about. To say he’s an inimitable force would be an understatement. But he’s really hurting now and can use a hand. I’m going to be doing my shirt off my back auction and all five of my upcoming #40YearsOfFoley shows in March – #NewOrleans #Lafayette #ColumbusOH (two shows in Columbus) and #DundeeIL. If you’re at one of these events, please consider placing a bid. For everyone else, please take a look at the GoFundMe site that has been set up for Brian
  • Trey Miguel spoke to Soundsphere magazine about how much TNA means to him:
    • The last time you asked me, what I said was only a percentage of what it means now. TNA has given me the opportunity to change my life. Back then, we hadn’t worked with WWE yet. I grew up watching WWE, so getting to reunite the Rascals, do great matches for four months with my brothers. That was special.
    • And everything I’ve been through recently, the way TNA showed loyalty to me, loyalty I’ve always tried to show them. It feels good to work for people who care about you. We’re all more than wrestlers; we’re humans. Humans go to bed with worries: ‘Is this going to work out? Can I keep doing this?’
    • For a moment, I doubted I’d ever wrestle again. I had announced I was wrapping things up. TNA called and offered me an opportunity not to do that. That showed me that the company I’ve given my best to for seven years feels the same way about me. That deepened the connection I have with TNA.
  • The Great Muta had an MRI after experiencing numbness in his hand, but no abnormalities were found:
    • I had numbness in my right hand, so I got an MRI of my cervical spine, but nothing abnormal showed up. I’m not even a baseball pitcher, but my elbow is deformed and it hurts!! Treatment injections… It’s scary

Trish Stratus shares 50th birthday gift from Stephanie McMahon

In celebration of her 50th birthday, WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus received a special gift from Stephanie McMahon.

Stratus, who turned 50 years old on December 18, shared today that Stephanie sent her 50 roses to mark the occasion. While showing off the flowers, Stratus joked about the rivalry she and Stephanie once had on WWE programming.

“So you think by sending me 50 long stem roses in varying shades of pink nestled among baby’s breath for my 50th birthday I’m just gonna forget everything??” Stratus wrote.

“Yup @stephaniemcmahon, that did the trick. Love you!”

It’s been a challenging time for Stratus with her mother passing away in August, and not having her mother here for her 50th birthday and the Christmas season has been especially hard. She sent out a message to anyone who is attempting to navigate this time without someone they love.

“They say the year of firsts is the hardest. I hope that’s true. I hope it gets a little easier with time, even if it never fully goes away,” Stratus wrote.

“For anyone walking through this kind of season without someone they love – especially a mom – please know I’m thinking of you and sending you love. I know, I know, she’s here in spirit
but the truth is, she’s not here – and it sucks.”

This year — which was the 25th anniversary of her WWE debut — saw Stratus return for a few matches, including losing to Tiffany Stratton at WWE Evolution.

Stratus accomplished a “bucket list” goal recently by being featured on the cover of the January 2026 edition of FHM Australia magazine.

Tiffany Stratton praises Trish Stratus after WWE Evolution dream match

Getting to face one of her dream opponents at WWE Evolution was a big confidence boost for Tiffany Stratton.

At the all-women’s PLE earlier this summer, Stratton and Trish Stratus faced off one-on-one for the first time ever. The match ended with Stratton defeating her Hall of Fame challenger to retain the WWE Women’s Championship — which she still holds nearly two months later.

Stratton reflected on the match while appearing on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast this week, saying she love Stratus and feels like they have great chemistry together.

“I think Evolution was a confidence boost for me. I was in the ring with Trish Stratus, and we had such a great match, I feel like. We have great chemistry,” Stratton said. “I love Trish so much. I love working with her. She’s amazing.

“But I think being backstage with all of these women — I think it’s amazing that we have so [many] women we can put on Evolution and everyone can have bangers. Like, I feel like everybody can have, you know, main event-level matches, and that’s so amazing. Our women’s division has just evolved so much.

“And I’m happy to be a part of it and be a champion for all these women that we have right now. So it’s a really good time to be a wrestler and a female in wrestling right now.”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Stratus’ WWE debut, and she feels a connection with Stratton given that they’re both blondes who had to overcome preconceived notions of what they can do. Stratus has competed three times in 2025, including teaming with Stratton against Nia Jax & Candice LeRae at Elimination Chamber this March.

After Evolution, Stratton went on to retain her WWE Women’s Championship over Jade Cargill at SummerSlam. She is now feuding with both Cargill and Jax.

WWE

  • WWE uploaded the full Sol Ruca vs. Tatum Paxley NXT Women’s North American Championship match from last night.
  • Cody Rhodes was on SportsCenter today discussing WWE’s new partnership with ESPN.
  • Pat McAfee posted a tweet reacting to the news that WWE PLEs are coming to ESPN’s direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2026. In his response, McAfee – one of ESPN’s top stars – continued to take shots at the “powerless” ESPN suits he believes have been trying to sabotage him behind the scenes:
    • Congrats to the @WWE and @espn on getting a historic PLE deal done.
    • Great to see 2 powerhouses of sports and entertainment come together.
    • I assume all the mid level, powerless, bum ass suits at ESPN will attempt to muddy this somehow (out of context leaks/ignorant anonymous opinions/etc.) but, in the end.. this agreement will outlive the dinosaurs currently guarding desks in Bristol and this deal will be great for ESPN.
    • Cheers to the future
  • John Cena is featured on the cover of the August 18 edition of People magazine.
  • Trish Stratus announced that she will not be able to make her scheduled appearance in the United Kingdom at Comic Con Wales on August 9-10:
    • Hi everyone, it breaks my heart to share that I won’t be able to attend the autograph signing in Wales this weekend. My mom needs me by her side right now, and with the distance involved, the travel is simply too far. If anything were to happen, I’d be too far away to get back quickly and that’s not a risk I can take at this time.
    • To those who bought tickets – I’m so sorry to disappoint you. I promise I will come back to Wales and we will meet another time! I’m truly sorry to disappoint anyone, please know I never take your support for granted, and it means the world to me.
    • I’m aware I have several upcoming appearances scheduled on the #Trish25 Tour and as of now, those are still planned. I’m working on putting the right support in place at home to allow me to step away when needed – but for this particular event, I had to make the difficult decision to stay close to home.
    • Thank you so much for your understanding and compassion. Your prayers and positive energy for my mom mean everything right now.
  • NXT wrestler Brinley Reece got engaged to her boyfriend Marcus Aponte on August 2: “BRB- Changing my last name! 8.2.25 was the best day of my life. This moment was more magical than my younger self could have ever dreamed of. I love you, forever!!”
  • Jacy Jayne was the guest on this week’s episode of Celtic Warrior Workouts with Sheamus.
  • The My Mom’s Basement podcast interviewed Dominik Mysterio.
  • WWE followed Dominik backstage at SummerSlam for a behind-the-scenes vlog.
  • Charlotte Flair made an appearance on Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe.

Other Wrestling

  • While speaking with the Ohio News-Herald, Willow Nightingale opened up about her decision to re-sign with AEW:
    • The idea of entertaining free agency didn’t even really cross my mind. I mean, obviously, the thought was there because it’s a business at the end of the day, but I am so happy where I am, and I feel like my work here is so far from done. And the things that I love about wrestling the most are afforded to me here. I do get to travel and see the world, wrestle other places, wrestle other people. But, also, I get to be a part of our locker room, and it’s changed and grown since I’ve started there, let alone from the people who were there from day one. Penelope Ford is someone who comes to mind, who was really an OG AEW wrestler, and she was gone for two years with a hip injury. She came back and instantly had as much passion as when she started. She and I don’t see eye-to-eye in the ring. We don’t deal with things the same way. We’ve got different mentalities. But I have to applaud someone who kind of came from a different time, and as the locker room has pushed for more and been hungry to get better, she has done the same, and that is — that’s the kind of locker room I want to be a part of.
    • You know, who’s just, like, ‘OK, we’re evolving, we’re growing, I’m gonna get with it?’… We all want each other’s spot. Whoever’s at the top — (AEW women’s world champion) Toni Storm, (TBS champion) Mercedes Mone — we all want to be you. And that’s the company I want to be in. I don’t want to be the best of people who are just happy to be where they are. I want to be the best people who are hungry and trying to make everybody better.
  • Nyla Rose is challenging Nightshade for the Eve Championship at Pro Wrestling Eve’s show in London on August 23.
  • After receiving backlash, Kiera Hogan posted a statement explaining a reality show clip where she called wrestling a “stepping stone” for her:
    • Yes, I said ‘pro wrestling was always going to be a stepping stone for other things.’ And I meant that.
    • Because wrestling has always been my first love – but I’m multi-talented and unapologetically ambitious. I knew from the jump that wrestling would open doors for me in fashion, TV, and beyond. Just like it has for so many others before me.
    • Y’all cheer when wrestlers land movie roles, runway shows, or makeup deals… but get mad when I say it out loud?
    • I’m not here to play small or limit myself to one lane. I’m here to build an empire.
  • Here is everything that’s been announced for Thursday’s episode of TNA Impact:
    • TNA World Champion Trick Williams kicks off the show
    • TNA Knockouts Champion Jacy Jayne defends against Ash By Elegance
    • Joe Hendry vs. Mustafa Ali
    • TNA International Champion Steve Maclin defends against Jake Something
    • Santino Marella makes an announcement regarding TNA Emergence
    • Mara Sade (former NXT wrestler Jakara Jackson) in action
    • The Elegance Brand (Heather By Elegance & M By Elegance) vs. Lei Ying Lee & Xia Brookside
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Mike Santana named AJ Styles as his dream opponent:
    • AJ Styles. Just especially being put in this position in TNA as being that new guy and the new face, and they call me The Standard and stuff like that. I think it’d be amazing. Of course, there’s other people that I love to work with over there [in WWE], and I have a lot of people that I know and that I came up on the indies with over there. But to me, AJ is the guy.
  • Prestige Wrestling announced that all profits from its August 23 show in Portland, Oregon will be donated to RAINN (the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). Tickets are donation-based with fans choosing how much to pay. The event was announced after a different local promotion attempted to book Joey Ryan, though that booking has already been canceled.

Show Recap —

COUNTDOWN SHOW

Michael Cole welcomed us to the pre-show, wrestlers arrived, and the show intro aired.

The panel was hosted by three men and one woman: Cole, Big E, Wade Barrett, and Jackie Redmond. Cathy Kelley and Megan Morant (likely in place of Byron Saxton, who usually is in this spot) ran down some matches backstage.

Kelley interviewed Rhea Ripley following a video package for tonight’s main event. Ripley called tonight a must-win because she’s never beaten Iyo Sky, and that’s gone on for too long.

They will be recognizing women’s division “trailblazers” throughout the pre-show, and they started with quite the list: Fabulous Moolah, Lia Maivia, Sensational Sherri, Torrie Wilson, Molly Holly Jazz, Maryse, Michelle McCool, and Stephanie McMahon.

Cole recalled Stephanie McMahon, in 2015, kicking off the “women’s revolution” by introducing Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch. Big E spoke about Bayley’s influence as well, and the panel spoke about tonight’s IC title three-way.

********

Torrie Wilson joined the panel and got a nice reaction from the fans who have arrived so far. Wilson recalled crying throughout the first Evolution show, and she’s been emotional all day today. The women have come a long way and are complete badasses. She loved seeing the women rallying behind each other, and the best moments were often not caught on camera.

She spoke about what it would have meant to her to have something like NXT and to train for a year. When she was around, she would learn new moves and have to perform them later that night. Sometimes the stress was unbearable. She often wondered how things would have been different if she had NXT.

********

The next group of trailblazers shown were Mae Young, June Byers, Leilani Kai, Chyna, Ivory, Queen Sharmell, Melina, and Lita. They showed clips of Lita beating Trish Stratus for the title, the first time women main evented Raw.

Morant interviewed Stratus backstage. She wanted to prove something to herself, but it was more about showing something to the young people watching, including her daughter. You didn’t have to fit in the box people put you in. You could evolve, keep going, and chase your dreams a little harder. It wasn’t over until you said so.

They previewed tonight’s NXT Women’s title match.

Blake Monroe met with Jordynne Grace backstage. After some pleasantries, Grace asked Monroe to be in her corner tonight (to counter Fatal Influence). Monroe didn’t want to step on Grace’s moment, but Grace insisted, so she accepted.

Shawn Michaels joined the panel to put over NXT.

*******

Nikki Bella joined Kelley in the crowd for an interview. Bella said tonight was women’s empowerment. That was her passion and her love. It would mean everything to have her son see her earn a title shot and win a title.

Kelley asked who she had her eye on in tonight’s battle royal, and Bella responded, “Stephanie.” She knew there would be a lot of competition, but she kept going back to Stephanie Vaquer. She repeatedly referred to Vaquer by only “Stephanie.”

********

Jacqueline joined the panel, and she was pumped to be there. She spoke about how much it meant to be in the Hall of Fame. She paid her dues and hoped her career inspired today’s women. She also talked about beating Chavo Guerrero to become Cruiserweight champ.

There was a feature on referees Jessika Carr and Daphanie LaShaunn.

Big E gave shout-outs to a bunch of the women who work off-camera. Redmond was happy to hear Big E do this, and she spoke sincerely about the importance of this show as well. Big E ran down everything he looked forward to tonight, and his excitement was infectious.

The next group of trailblazers shown were Mildred Burke, Cora Combs, Alundra Blayze, Jacqueline, Stacy Keibler, Vickie Guerrero, Victoria, and Trish Stratus.

The IC title three-way will open tonight’s show.

Bayley, Lyra Valkyria, Becky Lynch, Tiffany Stratton, Trish Stratus, Iyo Sky, and Rhea Ripley were shown arriving. A video intro played, using Katy Perry’s “Rise,” and there was a big fireworks display.

Joe Tessitore, hosting from the crowd, welcomed us to the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. He hyped up tonight’s show (while clearly reading off a piece of paper). He brought out his co-host, Stephanie McMahon, and said nights like tonight would not have happened without her.

McMahon said they had to prove with the first Evolution that they deserved their own show. Now, the women were regularly main-eventing, and the depth through NXT was unbelievable.

Michael Cole and Wade Barrett are tonight’s announcers. Cole again recalled Stephanie McMahon ushering in the “women’s revolution” in 2015 by bringing in Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch.

Alicia Taylor is tonight’s ring announcer.

They’re using the same stage setup as last night’s Saturday Night’s Main Event Show, so there is a narrow aisle to the ring.

Triple threat match for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Bayley vs. Lyra Valkyria

Match referee: Daphanie LaShaunn

The bell rang, and the fans gave an ovation before the wrestlers got going. Bayley hyped up the crowd, but used the moment to deck Valkyria, who wasn’t expecting it.

The first few minutes had everyone trading moves until Lynch suplexed Bayley into the barricade. More than three minutes after getting shoved into the steel steps, Valkyria woke up and wiped out both opponents with a flying crossbody.

Valkyria hit Lynch with a fisherman’s suplex, but Bayley broke up the cover with a perfectly-timed flying elbow. The crowd popped big for that, and they got a “This is awesome” chant moments later. Bayley hit Lynch with a sunset flip powerbomb into an upside-down Valkyria in the corner for two.

Lynch hit Bayley with a superplex, but Bayley repeatedly blocked attempts at submissions until Valkyria knocked down both women with a flying leg drop. This got another good pop and “This is awesome” chant. Lynch followed with a combo DDT/reverse DDT on both women and covered Valkyria for two.

Lynch and Valkyria traded counters until Lynch hit a man-handle slam, but Bayley broke up the cover. (The camera quickly panned away from Bayley moments before, so you couldn’t see her as she hit the ring to break it up.)

Bayley hit Lynch with a Bayley-to-belly, but Valkyria broke up that cover, and we got our third “This is awesome” chant. Valkyria hit Lynch with Nightwing, but, you guessed it, Bayley broke up the cover.

Bayley hit Valkyria with a Rose Plant. Instead of breaking up that cover, Lynch flew in and caught Bayley in a backslide for the pinfall win. Lynch retains.

Match result: Becky Lynch defeated Bayley and Lyra Valkyria to retain the Women’s Intercontinental Championship (16:25)

This was a very fun match with a clever finish, and the eager crowd helped. They could probably do a rematch and have a completely different but equally good match.

********

Ava and Mark Henry were shown in the crowd. A loud shrieking voice yelled, “Excuse me!” and they cut to Vickie Guerrero elsewhere in the crowd. This was just to give her a chance to say her catchphrase. She smiled and high-fived some fans.

*******

They aired a clip from earlier today of Jordynne Grace asking Blake Monroe to be in her corner tonight.

NXT Women’s Championship: Jacy Jayne (w/Fallon Henley & Jazmyn Nyx) vs. Jordynne Grace (w/Blake Monroe)

Match referee: Victoria D’Errico

Grace had the early edge until Jayne catapulted her into the middle rope. Henley choked Grace while Jayne distracted the referee. Monroe didn’t react, perhaps because she didn’t see it, or perhaps for another reason.

Jayne was in control until Grace hit a folding powerbomb for two. Jayne regained control and hit a draping neckbreaker for two. Jayne missed a corner cannonball, and they traded cradles until Grace hit a fisherman’s suplex for two. Jayne hit a hurricanrana off the top and a knee strike for a nearfall.

Henley tossed the title belt in the ring, so Monroe headbutted her. The referee stopped Jayne from using the belt, and Grace rolled her up for two. Grace followed with a back fist.

Nyx grabbed the belt next, so Monroe decked her. Monroe kept the belt in her hands, so you knew what was coming.

Henley tried getting in the ring, which distracted the ref for a long time. Jayne whipped Grace into the ropes, and Monroe hit her in the back with the belt. Jayne followed with a discus punch for the pinfall win.

— Fatal Influence were all surprised by Monroe’s actions. Monroe handed Jayne the belt, smiled at them, and left the ring. Grace (bleeding from the nose) was pissed.

Match result: Jacy Jayne defeated Jordynne Grace to retain the NXT Women’s Championship (10:28)

********

Jazz, Ivory, Jacqueline, and Maryse were in the crowd.

Tessitore and McMahon killed time by discussing the previous match and previewing the upcoming match.

Fatal Four-way Tag Team Match for the Women’s Tag Team Championships: Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez (c) vs. Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss vs. Asuka & Kairi Sane vs. Sol Ruca & Zaria

Match referee: Daphanie LaShaunn

Asuka and Sane were all over Perez until Rodriguez tagged in and knocked them both down with a clothesline. Rodriguez and Perez were in control briefly as the crowd chanted, “We want Charlotte,” which I’m sure was music to her ears. Bliss got a good reaction when she tagged and went after Perez.

Zaria tagged and easily blocked Bliss’ offence. She hit an inverted suplex, and Sol Ruca flew in with a springboard facebuster for two.

The crowd cheered when Charlotte got a hot tag from Bliss, and she ran wild on Judgment Day. Charlotte was visibly happy with her reaction, and she continued on offence. She hit Perez with a spear for a nearfall. Rodriguez booted Charlotte and checked on Perez. Cole thought it was interesting that Rodriguez was checking on Perez (her partner).

Asuka and Sane got their turn to shine next, but Zaria broke up Sane’s cover of Perez. Zaria tagged herself in and hit both Kabuki Warriors with a vertical suplex. Charlotte broke up a cover, so Sol Ruca hit Charlotte with a Sol Snatcher (which got a good pop). Moments later, Charlotte pulled Bliss from safety, and Zaria speared Sol Ruca by accident.

Rodriguez powerbombed Bliss over the top rope and into Asuka, Sane and Zaria. Rodriguez instructed Perez to take out Charlotte, so she hit a suicide dive. Rodriguez hit Sol Ruca with a Tejana Bomb for the pinfall win. Judgment Day retains.

Match result: Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez defeated Sol Ruca & Zaria, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss, and Asuka & Kairi Sane to retain the Women’s Tag Team Championships (10:52)

This match was fine, with some good spots mixed in. The finish was a bit abrupt, but the champs getting a decisive win isn’t the worst thing. The most notable thing was the big babyface reaction for Charlotte Flair (and Alexa Bliss).

********

Torrie Wilson, Melina, and Molly Holly were in the crowd.

They cut back to Tessitore and McMahon. Tessitore noted how handsome Paul Levesque (his boss) looked in his promo photo. Stephanie chuckled.

********

WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Trish Stratus

Match referee: Jessika Carr

Stratus wore white gear with gold lining, Stratton wore all red. Stratus had the early edge, which caught Stratton off guard. Stratus brought Stratton down off the apron with a hurricanrana and hit a tornado DDT in the ring for two.

Stratton went on offence and hit a vertical suplex into a backstabber (I think) for two. Stratton followed with a senton bomb for two. They traded counters until Stratus hit a Chick Kick for two. Stratton tried a PME, but Stratus got her knees up and hit Stratusfaction for a nearfall.

Stratus went for a moonsault (tribute to Lita), but Stratton got her knees up. Stratton hit a Chick Kick of her own, followed by the Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the pinfall win. Stratton retains.

— After the match, they cut Stratton’s music so Stratus could get an ovation from the crowd. (This wasn’t her retirement match, but we don’t know when the next one will be.)

Match result: Tiffany Stratton defeated Trish Stratus to retain the WWE Women’s Championship (8:37)

It’s probably not a good sign that Stratus, a part-timer (at most), looked much better than the current champion. Stratton’s stuff was really off early in the match. She did get better once it came time to do the big moves. Because this was a short match, that happened early enough, so the match wound up being fine. Stratus deserves some credit here.

********

They showed Rey Mysterio throwing out the first pitch at a San Diego Padres game.

Alundra Blayze and Leilani Kai were in the crowd. This is still a WWE show, so they couldn’t only show the former wrestlers all night. Metro Boomin and Lil Yachty were also shown in the crowd.

********

No Holds Barred match: Jade Cargill vs. Naomi

Special guest referee: Bianca Belair

Naomi entered first and tried to attack Cargill during her entrance. Cargill cut her off, and they rang the bell to start the match.

Cargill took forever to set up a table, and Belair went over to whisper something to her. The camera cut away from Cargill and focused on Naomi, who had to keep selling. Cargill eventually went after Naomi, but Naomi posted her. Cargill speared Naomi moments later, but Naomi gave her a bulldog onto a steel chair in the ring.

Naomi wrapped a chain around Cargill’s face, but Cargill knocked her off the ropes, wrapped the chain around her fist, and punched Naomi. Cargill yanked a big camera out of the hands of a cameraperson and used it to hit Naomi. She followed by placing a trash can lid over Naomi and kicking it.

Naomi rolled out of the ring, and Cargill tried to kill her by dropping a toolbox on her head, but Naomi avoided it. Naomi dropkicked Cargill into a random TV screen at ringside, and a smoke effect went off.

A few minutes later, Naomi used a chair to shove Cargill off the apron, and Cargill crashed through the table she had set up earlier. Naomi followed with an X-factor onto a chair for a nearfall.

Naomi placed Cargill on a table and went up the ropes, but Cargill hit her with a chair. Cargill grabbed Naomi and hit a Jaded off the middle rope through the table for the pinfall win. Belair raised Cargill’s hand.

Match result: Jade Cargill defeated Naomi in a no holds barred match (11:15)

This was maybe average at best. Naomi took a lot of the match until Cargill managed to hit her finisher for the win. Also, Belair didn’t get involved at all, so making her the referee was relatively pointless.

********

Tomorrow on Raw, there will be a gauntlet match involving CM Punk, Jey Uso, LA Knight, Penta, and Bron Breakker to determine Gunther’s SummerSlam opponent.

Battle Royal – winner earns a world championship match at Clash in Paris

Everyone got an entrance, so it took about 10 minutes for everyone to get in. They cut to black at one point, so certain feeds likely got a commercial break in between. Nikki Bella entered first. Stephanie Vaquer was second-last, and Giulia was last.

Nia Jax eliminated Tatum Paxley 8 seconds into the match, and Izzi Dame 7 seconds later.

Jax tossed Kelani Jordan into Paxley and Dam, but she didn’t land on her feet, and her momentum carried her to the announce table. Jordan did a handstand walk to get back into the ring. This got a nice reaction, but perhaps not the reaction they expected.

Ivy Nile went after Vaquer (as Chad Gable instructed), but Giulia eliminated Nile. Giulia and Vaquer had a staredown as the crowd chanted lightly for Nikki Bella. The crowd was quiet until Vaquer set up Nikki for Devil’s Kiss, and they booed when Chelsea Green broke it up.

There was a silly spot where Maxxine Dupri did her reverse worm, then convinced Natalya to try it too. Natalya did try, and it was bad. That led to Jaida Parker eliminating Natalya (so now Natalya can be annoyed with Dupri). Candice LeRae eliminated Dupri.

Jordan shoved Parker into LeRae, knocking her out of the ring for the elimination. (Cole referred to Candice LeRae as “Candice Michelle” here and again in the upcoming spot. Barrett called him out on it.)

Michin and B-Fab eliminated Parker, which got some good heat. Jax tried eliminating Jordan, but she remained on the apron. However, LeRae (already eliminated) yanked Jordan out from behind for the elimination.

Zelina Vega eliminated Giulia by kicking her into the ring post from the apron. B-Fab went after Piper Niven, but Niven just chucked her out for the elimination. Chelsea Green eliminated Michin, so Michin tried yanking out Green, but Alba Fyre wiped out Michin with a suicide dive.

Lash Legend eliminated Vega by press slamming her out of the ring. Nikki Bella tossed out Alba Fyre as she posed with her partners. Bella and Lola Vice swivelled their hips together until Niven knocked them down. Niven eliminated Vice, who didn’t do much in this match. Nikki and Vaquer eliminated Niven together.

Vaquer gave Green the Devil’s Kiss, which probably got the match’s biggest reaction. Nikki eliminated Green. Jax knocked down Nikki and did her own hip swivel.

Jax placed Nikki on the apron, and Lash Legend flew in with a boot. Jax moved, and Legend booted Nikki out of the ring for the elimination. Legend celebrated like this was a big deal, and she was in the final three with Vaquer and Jax.

Vaquer and Legend teamed up to knock Jax out of the ring for the elimination. The crowd cheered as the final two faced off. They traded offence, which included Vaquer hitting a 619.

Legend caught Vaquer off the ropes, and they stumbled over the top and to the apron. Vaquer grabbed Legend with her legs and hit Devil’s Kiss on the apron before knocking her own. Vaquer wins.

— Stephanie McMahon interviewed Vaquer in the ring. Vaquer admitted that doing interviews in English was hard for her because it wasn’t her first language, but wrestling was her first language. Funny enough, she spoke well after that. She thanked McMahon and every woman wrestler before her because now they could make history. She would keep working hard and promised that they would remember her name forever.

Match result: Stephanie Vaquer won a battle royal and will challenge for the world championship at Clash in Paris (15:32)

This was the definition of a standard battle royal, and the crowd only got into it toward the end. However, the right person won, and the final few minutes made her look like it. The crowd liked Vaquer and her interview.

********

Quavo and Funny Marco were shown in the crowd. I guess they ran out of former wrestlers.

Women’s World Championship match: IYO SKY (c) vs. Rhea Ripley

Match referee: Jessika Carr

Iyo Sky got the better of an early exchange and half-heartedly did her face-pointing pose. Ripley got the better of the following exchange and did Sky’s pose, which got some heat. Sky continued to out-wrestle Ripley by hitting a dropkick and an Asai moonsault.

They wound up on the apron, and Ripley finally got some offence by hitting a knee strike and tossing Sky into the announce table. It didn’t last long because Sky hit a great-looking tornado DDT. Sky couldn’t help but look enthused by hitting the move so smoothly.

Sky followed with a double foot stomp, suicide dive, and missile dropkick. Sky did her pose full-heartedly before hitting a running double knee strike in the corner for two. Ripley tried a middle rope suplex, but Sky landed on her feet. Ripley went to the top, but Sky yanked her onto the turnbuckle.

They traded counters until Sky hit a poisonrana for two. Sky went to the top, but Ripley shoved her down, and followed with a Razor’s Edge and sit-out powerbomb for two. Sky reversed a Rip-tide into a sleeper, but Ripley backed her into the corner.

Sky went for a springboard moonsault, but Ripley ducked, and Sky obliterated referee Jessika Carr by mistake. Ripley hit Sky with a Rip-tide, but the ref was dead.

Ripley was livid and hit another Razor’s Edge. Sky fell out of the ring, so Ripley booted her over the barricade. Ripley hammered away at Sky and tried powerbombing her off some equipment boxes to her death, but Sky fought her off and kicked her to the floor. Sky climbed up a second equipment box and hit a flying crossbody. The crowd chanted, “Holy sh-t.”

Back at ringside, Sky charged at Ripley, but Ripley dodged it and Sky went ribs-first into the announce table. Sky recovered, however, and hit Ripley with a sunset flip powerbomb off the apron. The ref reemerged as Sky hit a moonsault, but Ripley kicked out for an amazing nearfall. The crowd chanted for Ripley. They went to the top, and Sky hit an avalanche Spanish Fly.

With both women down, Naomi ran out with referee Daphanie LaShaunn. She officially cashed in to make this a triple threat.

Naomi hit Sky in the head with the briefcase and launched Ripley into the steel post. Naomi followed with a split-legged moonsault on Sky for the pinfall win. Naomi is the new champ.

Naomi and the crowd went nuts. (In fact, Naomi started to get up before the ref actually counted to three because she was so excited to celebrate.)

After some replays, Naomi posed with the belt on the stage as the show ended.

Match result: Naomi defeated IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley to win the Women’s World Championship (26:19)

This was an outstanding main event until he finish. I wouldn’t say Naomi’s cash-in ruined it, because it felt like a big moment with Naomi finally winning the title. However, the crowd was going insane for Sky and Ripley, and this would’ve been a match of the year candidate if one of them had won without the cash-in.

WWE Evolution preview & predictions: ‘Liv Morgan’s injured, but we did our best’

Image: WWE

It wasn’t a smooth riding leading into WWE Evolution, but there are some decent matches lined up for Sunday’s premium live event.

Of all the people WWE likely didn’t want to get injured before the PLE, it was Liv Morgan. It was either going to be her against Nikki Bella or she and Raquel Rodriguez against Nikki & Brie Bella in the main event. Either way, it would have been the featured angle heading into the show, the one used to sell tickets and such.

Morgan not being on the show hurts, but so does not having Bella in a marquee match. I think some fans underestimate how big of stars the Bellas are. Their Bella Army is massive but not necessarily tied to wrestling all the time. They follow Nikki and Brie wherever they go and there would be far more buzz about Evolution if Nikki hadn’t been relegated to the battle royal.

Still, some good matches and interesting stories could take place on Sunday. Below are previews and predictions for each match at Evolution:

WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton defends against Trish Stratus

Stratton is a -2000 favorite to retain and I certainly wouldn’t bet against that.

It’s not hard to figure out why the oddsmakers are so certain Stratton will win. Stratus is a returning legend and while that’s fun for now, she’s not going to be back for the long haul. I don’t think too many fans are going into this one thinking she has a shot. Stratton will win clean.

Naomi cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase could be teased here, but I’m not sure it will happen. If she does attempt it, I’d expect Stratus to help Stratton fight her off before the two babyfaces share a passing of the torch moment in the ring together.

Prediction: Tiffany Stratton retains

WWE Women’s World Champion IYO SKY defends against Rhea Ripley

It was good sportsmanship of SKY to pick Rhea Ripley as her title challenger for Evolution, but it’s likely going to cost her the championship.

Ripley is listed as a -500 favorite to win and I would even go higher than that. There could always be some outside hijinxs to cause an upset, but I think it’s time to put the belt back on Ripley and I believe WWE knows this as well.

Similar to the other babyface vs. babyface World title match on the show, it will likely be a clean finish and there could be an angle at the end when they fight off some interfering heels such as Roxanne Perez & Raquel Rodriguez.

Prediction: Rhea Ripley wins the title

WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch defends against Bayley and Lyra Valkyria in a three-way

Lynch is listed as a -2000 favorite to retain and she probably will, but those odds are too high for me.

Obviously, it’s a triple threat match for a title and Lynch is the only heel in there so this appears to be set up for her to retain by stealing a pin or some other type of under-handed chicanery.

Triple H doesn’t always do things right by the book, however. This is the guy who will have the babyface team get the advantage in WarGames matches after all, so just because it’s set up like this doesn’t necessarily mean Lynch will win.

Bayley (+350) hasn’t exactly been a true blue babyface leading up to this match, either. She could easily do something underhanded to get the win and it wouldn’t be inconsistent with how she’s been acting lately. There is a big part of me that thinks she could do exactly that, leading to Lynch and Valkyria (+600) both blaming the other and continuing their feud without the Intercontinental title involved.

Is it as likely as Lynch stealing a pin to get a cheap win? Probably not.

Prediction: Becky Lynch retains

NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne defends against Jordynne Grace

As of this writing, Grace is a -250 favorite to win the NXT Women’s Championship at Evolution but I would rate her as a much heavier favorite than that.

This match currently has the closest odds of any on the show. I feel pretty confident Grace is walking away with the title, however, likely after Blake Monroe helps her fend off Jayne’s run-in buddies.

With Giulia and Stephanie Vaquer up on the main roster, this is Grace’s division now and her crowning takes place at Evolution. I’m not certain how long of a reign she will have as she probably can’t be kept away from the main roster for much longer either. And Monroe is right there to take the title off her when that time comes.

Prediction: Jordynne Grace wins the title

WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez defend against Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss, Asuka & Kairi Sane, and Sol Ruca & Zaria in a four-way

The oddsmakers have Rodriguez and Perez listed as -500 favorites to retain.

The next highest odds are Bliss and Flair at +300 who are my picks to win. I don’t know if their story needs the titles, but they need a reason to continue teaming together and winning the belts accomplishes that.

I read Flair’s Players Tribune article and I listen to a lot of her interviews. It’s clear she really wants to be liked. You can tell it would mean a lot to her. There is pain there, too. Some of it from being a celebrity who is criticized constantly, some of it from her brother Reid’s passing, and some of it from her failed marriages. I don’t know how much real life is feeding into the on-screen story, but it almost seems as though Bliss’ character sees what’s happening with Ashley Fliehr too.

I’m interested in seeing where this goes. If the story blends in real life and becomes about a constantly criticized celebrity trying to find peace, I’m down for it. It seems like a very relevant story for our times.

Asuka and Sane are listed as +500 underdogs and Sol Ruca and Zaria at +900. I’ve really enjoyed Ruca and Zaria so far and, obviously, the Kabuki Warriors are great, so this should be a fun match.

Prediction: Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair win the titles

No holds barred: Jade Cargill vs. Naomi

Cargill is listed as a -2000 favorite and I don’t disagree with that at all.

WWE sees a big star in Cargill and I don’t think she is going to lose a singles match (other than a MITB cash-in scenario) in a long, long time. This won’t be a squash match, however. They will want Naomi to make this a competitive bout. That’s likely why it’s no holds barred.

Naomi will use various weapons, including her MITB briefcase, but in the end, Cargill will just be too much for her.

Cargill likely defeats Naomi here, but Naomi likely cashes in sometime soon, probably around SummerSlam, setting up a rematch.

Prediction: Jade Cargill

Battle royal for a title shot at Clash in Paris — Nikki Bella, Stephanie Vaquer, Natalya, Maxxine Dupri, Nia Jax, Ivy Nile confirmed entrants

There are no odds listed for this match but if Nikki Bella doesn’t win, I will be very surprised.

The winner of this bout gets a title shot at Clash in Paris and that seems like a fitting spot for The Bellas to be in the spotlight. There will be surprises, legends returning, and the whole nine yards. It will be a chance for the live crowd to cheer names that they haven’t seen in years while getting as many names as possible on the card.

Prediction: Nikki Bella

Trish Stratus: WWE Evolution ‘came about quite quickly for everyone’

Trish Stratus admits that the build to WWE Evolution has been a bit rushed, but she fully plans on delivering in her match against Tiffany Stratton.

At this Sunday’s all-women’s PLE, Stratus will challenge Stratton for the WWE Women’s Championship. The match was made last week when Stratus returned on SmackDown and was chosen by Stratton as her Evolution opponent. The two successfully teamed together at Elimination Chamber in March, and their history dates back to 2024 when they had a backstage interaction at Money in the Bank.

Stratus told Notsam Wrestling that, given the quick build to Evolution, she is grateful that there is already a built-in story with her and Stratton. She believes it’s a fantasy matchup that fans have wanted to see.

“This entire card has seemed to be a quick turnaround, as it is, unfortunately. And I get it. There’s like 7,000 events a month, it seems like,” Stratus said. “But I think there’s a little bit of a built-in storyline, luckily, for Tiffany and I. You know, I love the fact that we had this connection. And I think people really were digging the Trishy Time [and] Tiffy Time thing. So I think that worked really well.

“But, you know, I think there was — people were seeing the parallels. There’s these two blondes who came into the business and, you know, a preconceived notion of what they can deliver in the ring and having to prove ourselves and knowing that like, you might think this is what you’re going to get from me in the ring, but now I have to work extra hard because I have to prove those people all wrong. So we both had to do that and had great success early on in our career.

“You know, she became champion at 25. I know a certain someone who became champion for the first time at 25 as well. So, you know, there’s a bit of — and luckily, I say — there’s a bit of a built-in storyline because, yeah, the whole Evolution kind of came about quite quickly for everyone. But I think with a little bit of that fantasy booking and seeing Tiff and I in there, I think people wanted it. And I think it’s going to really deliver. I know it’s going to deliver.”

Stratus did not compete in 2024 but will now be wrestling in her third match this year. The WWE Hall of Famer was an entrant in the women’s Royal Rumble in February and later teamed with Stratton to defeat Nia Jax & Candice LeRae at Elimination Chamber.

When asked if she’ll be sticking around after Evolution, Stratus said she’s viewed the appearances she’s made this year as a celebration of the 25th anniversary of her WWE debut — and she’s leaving the door open for more appearances before 2025 ends.

“This is perfect, the way it’s been written, almost,” Stratus said. “If you were to look at the year of like how it should go. We’re only, what — it’s only July, isn’t it?”

“I literally have said, if you guys want some more Stratusfaction, just let me know. And if you don’t, then let me know too — I don’t care really about what those guys say. But, yeah, if you want more Stratusfaction, let me know.”

Evolution is being held at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Sunday. It’s the first time the PLE has taken place since its inaugural edition in 2018.

Trish Stratus challenging Tiffany Stratton for WWE Women’s Championship

WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus is returning from hiatus to challenge for the Women’s Championship at Evolution.

As confirmed during Friday’s taped SmackDown episode, Stratus will challenge Tiffany Stratton for the WWE Women’s Championship at the Sunday, July 13 Evolution event in Atlanta.

During an in-ring promo with Queen of the Ring winner Jade Cargill, Stratton revealed that she had been granted the opportunity to choose her challenger at Evolution and had chosen Stratus. Cargill will face the winner at SummerSlam set for August 2 and August 3.

Stratus and Stratton teamed at the Elimination Chamber event in Stratus’s hometown of Toronto earlier this year.

A former seven-time Women’s Champion, Stratus was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. Stratus has held the WWE Women’s title since January 3 of this year when she cashed in her Money in the Bank contract on Nia Jax on SmackDown.

The updated Evolution lineup following SmackDown:

WWE Evolution, Sunday, July 13, 7 p.m. Eastern time on Peacock in the US and Netflix internationally —

  • WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton defends against Trish Stratus
  • Women’s World Champion IYO SKY defends against Rhea Ripley
  • NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne defends against Jordynne Grace

WWE reveals official poster for Evolution 2025

With the event now less than two weeks away, WWE has revealed the official poster for Evolution 2025.

The all-women’s PLE is taking place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Sunday, July 13 and will stream live on Peacock in the United States and Netflix in other international markets. Today, Paul “Triple H” Levesque shared new promotional material for the show advertising some of the wrestlers who will be competing.

Notably, the poster publicly confirms WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus for Evolution. Stratus’ role for the show was revealed at last night’s SmackDown taping, with the episode set to air on USA Network this Friday night.

Hall of Famer Nikki Bella is also among those featured. Bella was building up a program with Liv Morgan for Evolution when Morgan suffered a dislocated shoulder that will keep her sidelined for months. Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez were the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions at the time of the injury. Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez are now being recognized as the champs.

Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, IYO SKY, Naomi, Tiffany Stratton, Alexa Bliss, Rodriguez & Perez, Nia Jax, Jade Cargill, Zelina Vega, Alba Fyre, Natalya, Lyra Valkyria, Chelsea Green, Ivy Nile, Bayley, Kairi Sane, and NXT wrestlers Jacy Jayne, Jordynne Grace, Sol Ruca, and Jaida Parker are included on the poster as well.

This is the second-ever WWE Evolution event, coming seven years after the show was first held in 2018. The following matches have been confirmed so far:

WWE Evolution 2025 —

  • Women’s World Champion IYO SKY defends against Rhea Ripley
  • NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne defends against Jordynne Grace
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez defend in a fatal four-way match against one team from Raw, one from SmackDown, and one from NXT
  • Battle royal to determine Women’s Championship challenger for WWE Clash in Paris

Show Recap —

COUNTDOWN SHOW —

Fans and wrestlers arrived at the SkyDome in Toronto, and they aired a Chamber numbers video.

The panel began with Michael Cole, Big E (celebrating a birthday), Wade Barrett, and Pat McAfee. McAfee arrived moments before they went on the air thanks to traffic, and as a Toronto local, that’s no surprise to hear. They tried to explain the significance of Cody Rhodes’ decision.

Kevin Owens arrived wearing a Bret Hart jacket. He stole some tools from the backstage area and put them in his backpack (to use later).

There was a video package for The Rock, focusing on his role in TKO and his success outside the ring. Cole’s sources told him that Rhodes recently had meetings in Hollywood at the invitation of Seven Bucks Productions (Rock’s company).

Nia Jax and Candice LeRae told Byron Saxton that Tiffany Stratton was ungrateful and they would retire Trish Stratus for good.

There was a plug for Evolve and Kylie Rae was among the few they focused on.

Jackie Redmond and Peter Rosenberg replaced Cole and McAfee on the panel. Redmond made sure to refer to the building as “SkyDome.” She also gave McAfee and Rosenberg a hard time for complaining about the weather. (Currently -9°C or 15°F.)

Redmond had the fans (the stadium is still filling up) sing Happy Birthday to Big E.

Logan Paul sit-down interview

Cathy Kelley interviewed Logan Paul. She asked why this year’s Chamber would be different. He said he was actually preparing for it this year, whereas last year, wrestling was just a hobby. It bothered him when people called him a part-timer because it was true. He was full-time now and there was nothing that could stop him besides himself.

Kelley asked about each wrestler in the Chamber. He had insults for everyone except Damian Priest, whom he had no opinion about at all.

********

There was a segment with Big E trying Toronto cuisine at St. Lawrence Market. He bought some food for the panel and chucked peameal bacon slices into the crowd.

They showed the super store located inside the stadium. (I went there on Thursday, the day it opened, and there were no Sami Zayn shirts whatsoever. It made me wonder if they lost a box.)

********

Canadian Elizabeth Irving sang the American and Canadian national anthems. The American anthem was booed, as it often has been at Canadian sporting events recently. The fans loudly sang along with the Canadian anthem and chanted “Canada” when it was over.

ELIMINATION CHAMBER: TORONTO —

Wrestlers were shown arriving earlier. There was an intro video followed by a fireworks display.

Michael Cole, Wade Barrett, and Michael Cole are on commentary. McAfee wasn’t happy about the booing of the American anthem and said Canada was terrible.

There’s no real stage thanks to the large crowd, just a few small video boards. There is a large video board above the ring.

Women’s Elimination Chamber: Bianca Belair defeated Alexa Bliss, Bayley, Liv Morgan, Naomi and Roxanne Perez (29:15)

Naomi and Morgan started the match. Belair seemed to get the biggest reaction coming out. (They all happened to be wearing white as their predominant colour.)

Jade Cargill marched out (to her music) as soon as the bell rang. She managed to get into the ring before they closed the cage for the match.

Morgan acted scared but Cargill made a beeline right to Naomi and attacked her. Cargill beat the absolute hell out of Naomi as the crowd chanted, “Holy sh*t.”

Cargill stomped Naomi in the corner, tossed her into the pods and booted her into a pod. The crowd chanted, “You deserve it,” at Naomi as she tried crawling out of the cage. Cargill slammed the sliding door on Naomi before leaving. Belair freaked out the entire time, helpless inside her pod.

They brought out a stretcher for Naomi and announced she was no longer able to compete.

Belair happened to be the next person in. She immediately checked on Naomi but was attacked from behind by Morgan.

(Cargill looked great. She wore black gear with white/silver hair, which was in contrast to Naomi’s outfit.)

Belair happened to be the next person in (four minutes into the match). She immediately checked on Naomi but was attacked from behind by Morgan.

The match slowed to a crawl so they let Perez in next, just three and a half minutes later. Bayley entered next, only about three minutes later. So five of the six wrestlers were in less than 11 minutes into the match.

Perez powerbombed Bayley onto the hard surface and hit a frog splash for two. Morgan caught Perez with a Codebreaker.

Bliss entered last (so everyone was in 14.5 minutes into the match) and went after Morgan. She got a good reaction coming out, and she ran wild on Morgan, Perez, and Bayley.

Everyone got involved and Bayley gave Belair and Bliss a low crossbody onto the hard surface. Morgan shoved Bayley into a pod but Bayley gave her a Rose Plant. Perez caught Bayley in a crossface but she managed to escape.

Bayley tossed Perez out of the ring, and Morgan suddenly nailed Bayley with Oblivion for the elimination (19 minutes into the match).

Belair and Morgan battled on top of a pod until Belair whipped her with her braid (which made a great noise and popped the relatively quiet crowd). Morgan wound up with a pretty bad bruise on her back and midsection thanks to the braid.

Belair hit Perez, Bliss and Morgan with a flying crossbody off the pod. They traded moves until Bliss eliminated Perez after a Twisted Bliss.

Morgan gave Belair three amigos and went for a 619 but Bliss caught her. They traded counters until Belair caught Morgan in a cradle for two. Bliss hit Belair with her version of Sister Abigail but Morgan cradled Bliss for the elimination

Morgan and Belair were the final two. Belair was still down from the Sister Abigail, so Morgan made a cover for two. Morgan used Belair’s braid as a slingshot, bouncing her back and forth into the side of the cage. (That was a great spot.)

Belair fought back and pounced Morgan for two. Belair swung Morgan repeatedly into a pod and powerbombed her over the ropes and back into the ring.

Belair tried a 450 but Morgan got her knees up. Morgan hit a  Codebreaker and tried Oblivion, but Belair caught her and hit KOD for the pinfall win.

This match was pretty good and picked up more towards the end. Belair looked great, especially in the final moments. The crowd was happy with Belair’s win.

— As Belair celebrated by the stage, Rhea Ripley entered for a face-off. IYO SKY walked out next to join the stare-down.

********

Canadian rapper Nav was in the crowd.

For at least the third time, McAfee brought up the American anthem being booed. He even said that Canada better stop doing that or else.

About 8.5 minutes elapsed between the end of the last segment and the entrances for this match. 13 minutes elapsed between the end of the last segment and the start of this match.

Trish Stratus & WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton defeated Nia Jax & Candice LeRae (11:40)

Cole said Stratus’ kids were watching her wrestle live for the first time. Stratus and Stratton wore matching white and blue gear. On the way out, Stratton seemed to get a bigger reaction than Stratus.

Stratus hit Jax with some weak-looking strikes and a better looking DDT for two. Jax blocked a bulldog and hit a back suplex for two. A few fans chanted “Canada” (for Trish), so Jax grabbed Stratus by the hair and chanted “USA.”

Stratton made a hot tag and hit LeRae with an Alabama Slam and Jax with a spinebuster. Stratton dropkicked LeRae for two. Stratton tried PME but LeRae tripped her off the top, and Jax followed with a leg drop for two. Stratton gave Jax a back suplex and tagged in Stratus.

Stratus hit Jax with a bulldog off the top. LeRae tried to break up the cover with a springboard moonsault but Stratus moved out of the way and LeRae landed on her partner.

Stratton tagged in and hit Jax with PME for the pinfall win.

This wasn’t much of a match, but a good win for Stratton.

********

Travis Scott was shown in the back.

If you’re a Toronto local, the WWE store at gate 5 of the stadium will be open through Sunday.

Andrew Phung (who I met at Smackdown the last time they were here), Robbie Amell and Italia Ricci were in the crowd.

A video package for The Rock was shown (the same one shown during the pre-show).

The live attendance was announced as 38,493.

There was a video package for Owens vs. Zayn.

About 15 minutes elapsed from the end of the last segment and the entrances for this match.

********

Unsanctioned Match: Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn (27:36)

The referee wore all black and Alicia Taylor announced that he was only there to count falls or accept submissions. He already had gloves on, just in case of blood. Both wrestlers also wore all black (with Owens sporting a red elbow pad). They also dimmed the stadium lights.

Cole actually mentioned a past grudge match between “El Generico” and “Kevin Steen.”

They traded fists to start, but Owens dropped Zayn gut-first over the top rope and hit a senton. Zayn drove Owens into the metal ring post (no video posts today).

Some fans chanted for tables, but Zayn grabbed chairs instead. Owens used the chair on Zayn, but Zayn ducked a shot, and the chair bounced off the rope and hit Owens in the face. Zayn then took his turn hitting Owens with the chair.

Zayn grabbed an all-black hockey stick out from under the ring (an odd thing to find at a baseball stadium). Zayn grabbed a table, but Owens posted him. Owens used the stick to crossface Zayn and simultaneously bit his forehead.

Owens grabbed a new table and stacked it on top of the other one, but Zayn attacked him with the stick. They fought into the crowd and Zayn hit Owens with a trash can.

Zayn gave Owens a Blue Thunder Bomb variation through a table. Zayn saw another table and slammed him through that one, too. (The second table had a bunch of drinks and cups and popcorn on it.)

Zayn chased Owens down toward ringside with a trash can lid, but Owens hit him with the ring bell. Owens also used the lid and a monitor as a weapon.

They battled on the top rope, when Owens slipped underneath Zayn and shoved him out through the stacked up tables outside the ring. That was nuts, and got a big reaction.

Owens gave Zayn a fisherman’s buster onto an open steel chair for a nearfall. Zayn slipped out of a pop-up powerbomb and hit consecutive half and half suplexes. The second one had Owens landing on top of an upright chair, and the chair buckled under Owens’ weight. That looked brutal.

Zayn went for a Helluva Kick but Owens moved and Zayn nailed the referee by mistake. Owens followed with a stunner and a new referee ran down but Zayn kicked out. Owens was pissed so he clotheslined the ref. (A third ref ran down.)

Owens went to the top, but Zayn chucked a chair at his face. Zayn went up, but Owens nailed an avalanche fisherman’s buster through a table. Zayn just barely rolled his shoulder up at two.

A few officials ran down to try to talk them into stopping. Owens got in Zayn’s face and screamed, “It’s all your fault,” but Zayn nailed a Helluva Kick for two.

Zayn grabbed a chair wrapped in barbed wire and the crowd gasped. Zayn hesitated before hitting Owens twice in the back with the chair. Owens fought back anyway until Zayn gave him a drop toe hold, face-first into the barbed wire. Owens sold it like his eye was hurt.

Zayn stacked the barbed wire chair on top of two other chairs and hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for a close nearfall. The crowd, now on its feet, chanted, “This is awesome.”

Zayn went for a final Helluva Kick but Owens countered into a pop-up powerbomb. Zayn heavily sold his injured neck. Owens wrapped a chair around Zayn’s head and neck and drove him into the ring post—twice. (Cole screamed that this wasn’t worth it.)

Owens powerbombed Zayn onto the edge of the ring and Cole yelled, “You sick bastard!” More officials ran down to plead with Owens.

Zayn tried fighting back but Owens gave him another powerbomb on the apron. Owens rolled him into the ring and covered him for the pinfall win.

— Security followed Owens up the ramp, but he attacked a few guards and went back to ringside. He pulled up the black mats and grabbed Zayn but stopped when Randy Orton’s music hit.

Orton entered (in his gear). Owens was ready for him in the ring, and they brawled briefly until Orton hit an RKO. Orton grabbed a chair to get redemption for his neck, but he tossed it aside and set up for a punt. He went for it but officials ran in to stop him. Owens escaped to the back.

Orton handed out RKOs to four security guards instead. (There was a funny bit where Orton offered a handshake to the last guard who was dumb enough to fall for it.) Orton posed for the fans.

(This was a great street fight, but I’m not sure it ever escalated to a level of violence beyond what they’ve done to each other before in this very company.)

********

The announcers plugged stuff, including Stephanie McMahon’s new show, “Stephanie’s Places.” The first place is
 Pat McAfee’s studio.

Dion Dawkins of the Buffalo Bills was in the crowd.

********

Cole mentioned that Chris Jericho held the record for most eliminations in the Chamber and that he was the person who invited the match. He’s thinking of Money in the Bank.

Logan Paul entered with an American flag.

About 11 minutes elapsed between the end of the last segment and the start of entrances for this match. The entrances alone for this took 15+ minutes.

Men’s Elimination Chamber: John Cena defeated CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins, Damian Priest and Logan Paul (32:38)

McIntyre and Rollins started. They immediately tried their finisher but missed. McIntyre tossed Rollins onto the hard surface and into the chains. (One negative of having two Chamber matches on one show is that we’ve seen this already, so it doesn’t have as much impact.)

Rollins fought back and repeatedly drove McIntyre into Punk’s pod as Punk cheered him on. McIntyre removed a turnbuckle pad and gave Rollins a slingshot into the metal piece. Punk cheered this on too.

Unlike the women’s match, they went a full five minutes for the first interval. Priest entered, to not much of a reaction. They gave Priest a chance to shine and he gave Rollins a Razor’s Edge over the top rope into McIntyre.

Rollins superkicked McIntyre and Priest. McIntyre gave Rollins a spinebuster and powerbombed him onto Priest’s back. The crowd yelled obscenities at Paul as McIntyre brought down both Rollins and Priest with a suplex out of the corner.

Less than four minutes passed before Paul entered next. He hit something on each guy for a two count. He posed, but Priest hit him with a bell clap. The crowd cheered as Paul’s face was driven into the cage. The crowd chanted, “F**k you, Logan,” and Netflix tried censoring it.

John Cena entered next (after another short interval). The crowd went nuts for Cena, who delivered his usual offence. He planted Paul with an AA, but McIntyre flew in with a Claymore Kick on Cena.

Before McIntyre could go for a cover, Priest caught McIntyre in a crucifix pin (about 13 minutes into the match) for the elimination. McIntyre gave Priest a Claymore before leaving.

Paul went to the top of a pod and hit Priest with a frog splash for the pinfall elimination (just a minute after McIntyre).

Punk entered last. The crowd chanted for Punk as he went right after Paul. He repeatedly slammed the back of Paul’s head against the plexiglass.

Punk turned around and saw Cena standing tall in the ring. Cena couldn’t help but smile as the two men faced off as the crowd chanted, “Holy sh*t.” Before they could go at it, Rollins flew in and booted Punk. Rollins told Cena that Punk was his.

As Cena and Rollins traded right hands, Paul hit them with a double Buckshot lariat (sort of). He tried for one on Punk but Punk countered it and slapped him. Punk gave Paul a GTS for the pinfall elimination. (Punk made a shovel/burying motion with his hands.)

The final three were Cena, Punk and Rollins. Rollins wound up the target so Cena and Punk teamed up on him and gave him a Hart Attack.

Cena and Punk faced off again. Cena offered a handshake, so Punk hugged him instead. It was sincere, because they backed off before trading strikes. Cena got the better of it and hit Punk with shoulder tackles. Punk hit a corner knee but Cena slammed him.

They traded counters until Punk went for GTS, but Cena reversed that into an STF. Punk reversed that into an Anaconda Vice, but Cena reversed that into a cradle for two. Punk hit a neckbreaker, and the crowd applauded both men.

Punk went to the top but saw Rollins get to his feet, so he hit Rollins with an axe handle. Punk went back to the top but Cena caught his crossbody attempt and hit an AA for a close nearfall.

Cena went to the top but Rollins powerbombed him into the chains and drove him through the pod’s plexiglass. Rollins gave Punk a Pedigree for two. Punk blocked a Rollins superplex and hit a flying elbow drop. Rollins responded with a buckle bomb and a stomp for another nearfall on Punk. (Punk has kicked out of an AA, Pedigree, and stomp.)

Rollins slipped out of an AA but Punk gave him a GTS. Cena gave Rollins an AA and Punk covered Rollins for the pinfall elimination

Cena and Punk were the final two. They faced off again to the sound of duelling chants, and Cena was no longer smiling.

Cena offered a handshake. Punk shook his hand but hoisted him up and hit a GTS for a nearfall. Cena followed with another AA for a nearfall.

Rollins, who had yet to leave, stomped Punk on the hard surface.

Cena did not hesitate and he immediately pulled Punk into the ring and applied an STF. Punk passed out. Cena wins and is headed to WrestleMania.

(Like the women’s match, this match picked up more towards the end. In this case, the Cena and Punk interactions were the highlight.)

— Cena posed as fireworks went off.

Main Event segment

Cody Rhodes entered with Cena still in the ring. Cena held the ropes open for him. Cena told Rhodes he was coming for his belt at WrestleMania.

The Rock’s music hit. Travis Scott’s “Fein” played and he entered. The music cut back to Rock’s theme and Rock entered with Scott.

Rock and Rhodes came face to face as Cena stood by to watch. (Scott also watched in the corner.)

Rock told Rhodes that he would embrace him, and he would embrace Rhodes as his champion. Rock wanted it all. He wanted Rhodes’ mind and soul. God have mercy, Rock needed his soul. If the answer was yes, the American Nightmare would live forever. If Rhodes’ answer was no, then tonight, the dream died—again.

Rock held his arms out for a hug. Rhodes responded, “I want it all, Rock. My soul no longer belongs to me. And you know why? Because I gave my soul to this ring and these people a long time ago.” The fans, and Cena, cheered.

Rhodes said, “Hey Rock, go f*ck yourself!” (This was not censored.)

The crowd went nuts for that. Cena was amused. Rock was not.

It was a swerve.

Cena hugged Rhodes but had a stern look on his face and he stared at The Rock. Rock did the throat-slash gesture. The crowd gasped.

Cena stepped back and kicked Rhodes in the nuts. Cena grabbed Rhodes’ gold Rolex and punched him with it. Cena hammered away at Rhodes and hit him with the mic and title belt.

A mean-looking Cena posed with the WWE Championship. Rhodes was busted open and Cena hit him with the belt again.

Cena and Scott held down Rhodes, and Rock repeatedly hit him over the back with a weight belt (which read, “Cody’s Soul”).

Cena put his foot on Rhodes’ head as he posed with The Rock. Rock wiped Rhodes’ blood on the weight belt and hit him with it one more time.

Cena left to a mixed reaction. Cena, Rock and Scott posed together in the aisle. The camera focused on a bloody Rhodes as the show ended.

(The initial Cena turned got a huge pop. The crowd was mixed after that, but there was more booing than cheering, and some “You sold out,” chants.)

This was an excellent angle that will obviously have people talking. (Although I could have done without Travis Scott standing between Rock and Cena after Cena finally turned heel after all these years, and without Michael Cole yelling, “What the!” after the low-blow.) Â
