AEW’s Matt Jackson, Brandon Cutler get COVID-19, Young Bucks off Dynamite

Matt Jackson, one half of former AEW Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks, has COVID-19, along with stablemate Brandon Cutler.

According to Bryan Alvarez, both Jackson (seen above) and Cutler got the virus and since brother Nick Jackson was with the two men for 18 hours recently, he was deemed a close contact. As a result, all three men won’t appear on this week’s AEW Dynamite debut on TBS and won’t be back on TV until they are cleared.

The Bucks changed their Twitter bio Tuesday to, among other things, say that Matt had COVID-19.

All three are believed to be at home in California and didn’t make the trip to Newark, New Jersey, for Wednesday’s show. It’s unknown when the positive tests came in, but it was not Tuesday.

The Bucks weren’t announced for a match on either Dynamite or Rampage this week and appeared on last week’s show as the storyline with Adam Cole and the reformed reDRagon (Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly) continued.

Nick Jackson battled COVID-19 in September 2020 which affected him for nearly three months.

Four matches announced for AEW Dark: Elevation

Four matches have been announced for this week’s AEW Dark: Elevation.

Chuck Taylor will face Rey Fenix in one of the marquee bouts. Best Friends and The Lucha Brothers have been feuding in recent weeks, with  Penta El Zero Miedo picking  up a win over Trent this past Wednesday on Dynamite.

Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page, who have teamed together in recent weeks, will take on Alex Reynolds and Allan “Five” Angels of The Dark Order. Sky and Page were also involved in the show closing angle on Dynamite, where they attacked Darby Allin after he successfully defended the TNT title against Jungle Boy.

Additionally, Matt Sydal will face Joey Janela. Sydal will team with his brother Mike this Wednesday against The Young Bucks in a AEW World Tag Team title eliminator. Big Swole and Red Velvet, meanwhile, will team up to take on Nyla Rose and Madi Wrenkowski.

AEW Dark: Elevation is streamed every Monday starting at 7 pm Eastern.

Laredo Kid to make AEW Dynamite debut in trios match

Laredo Kid is returning to AEW this Wednesday on Dynamite in a trios match.

Tony Khan tweeted this evening that with PAC still recovering from an ankle injury, a trios tag match will take place, with The Young Bucks and Brandon Cutler teaming up to take on The Lucha Brothers (Penta El 0 M & Rey Fenix) and Laredo Kid.

“Nearly 2 years after his @AEW debut in a classic match at #FyterFest 2019, @Laredokidpro1 will return for his #AEWDynamite debut this Wednesday LIVE on TNT, reuniting with the Lucha Brothers @ReyFenixMx & @PENTAELZEROM to battle World Tag Team Champions @youngbucks & @BranCutler!” he wrote. “With@BASTARDPAC recovering from injuring his ankle at Revolution, he’s not yet cleared for the tag title shot with @ReyFenixMx v. @youngbucks, so Death Triangle are bringing back the Lucha Brothers’ original @AEW Trios partner Laredo Kid to get the edge ahead of the title match!”

Laredo Kid made his only appearance for the company so far at Fyter Fest 2019, where he teamed with The Lucha Brothers in a losing effort against Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks in a trios match.

Also announced for Dynamite this Wednesday is a TNT title match, with Darby Allin defending against The Dark Order’s John Silver. Nyla Rose will take on Tay Conti, and FTR & Shawn Spears will face Varsity Blonds and Top Flight’s Dante Martin.

Additionally, Kenny Omega will face Matt Sydal in a non-title match. If Sydal wins, he will receive a future AEW World title match

VIDEO: Being The Elite – Brandon Cutler’s big win

Video —

This week on Being The Elite —

The Elite —

  • In the cold open, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson limped to the ring to support Brandon Cutler in his match against Peter Avalon.
  • A Brandon Cutler video promo aired. It showed highlights from his long series of losses. Between singles and tags, Cutler went 0-25-2 in AEW before finally beating Avalon on Dark. The video ended with Cutler’s first win.
  • Cutler and The Young Bucks cut a promo after after the victory. Cutler said wins and losses matter but people get caught up on the wins. Cutler said he proved that losses matter too.

Dark Order —

  • Alex Reynolds and John Silver approached Darby Allin and tried to appeal to him by talking about how much they love Good Charlotte and skateboards. They also had their faces painted. Silver told Allin they wanted to recruit him. Allin chased them away.

Gator Golf —

  • Eddie Kingston made a putt backstage, but he is not in the tournament.
  • The three-way Gator Golf final to determine the first BTE World Champion will be held on next week’s episode.

Miscellaneous bits —

  • Fuego Del Sol was with Sammy Guevara backstage. Fuego said he flew himself in, put himself up in a hotel and showed up at Dynamite in his gear to show that he was ready for an opportunity. Matt walked by. Guevara told Fuego that if he took out Matt he could get back into the Gator Golf tournament. Guevara threw a shoe at Matt but it hit Brian Cage instead. Cage went after Fuego. Fuego ratted Guevara out. Cage chased after Guevara.
  • Super Panda and Luchasaurus were hanging out at Luchasaurus’s dad’s house. Dad made a cameo. Panda wanted to work on Luchasaurus being able to hit a destroyer. Luchasaurus only wanted to work on big man spots. Luchasaurus hit a dive off a diving board into a swimming pool but splashed his dad with water.

Speaking Spanglish —

  • Alex Abrahantes hosted Spanglish Familia Feud.
  • It was Dasha Gonzalez, Santana, Ortiz, Sammy Guevara & Diamante vs. The Dark Order (Evil Uno, 10, Alan Angels, Stu Grayson, Anna Jay & John Silver)
  • The gag here was that the game was rigged in Dark Order’s favor until Abrahantes showed up as his fortune teller character and tipped the game in the other side’s favor.
  • The sound quality was awful. The bit was endless. This was a huge miss.

Brandon Cutler vs. Peter Avalon 3 set for next AEW Dark

Set up on this past week’s Being The Elite, either Brandon Cutler and Peter Avalon will get their first AEW win this Tuesday on Dark as they will meet for the third time.

On BTE, company president and booker Tony Khan said that there must be a winner after their first two matches went to a double countout and double DQ, respectively.

In a storyline that played out entirely on Dark and BTE, the two had teamed up starting in May but never won a match in thirteen outings. The two finally came to blows after the final loss in August which eventually set up their first and then second singles matches against each other. Manager Leva Bates has reluctantly stuck with Avalon and has been conflicted in their two matches.

Both men have been with AEW since the start with Cutler making an appearance on the debut Dynamite in a losing effort to MJF. Avalon worked Dark for a month before making his Dynamite debut in mid-November. Neither man has been on Dynamite since a late-May battle royal.

Peter Avalon vs. Brandon Cutler headlines 11-match AEW Dark lineup

After never recording a win as a team, The Initiative (Peter Avalon and Brandon Cutler) finally blew up two weeks ago after their latest defeat.

On this Tuesday’s AEW Dark, the two will square off in the main event of Dark as part of an 11-match lineup with Leva Bates remaining in Avalon’s corner.

In other notable matches, Brandi Rhodes will be in a singles match for the first time since July of 2019 when she faces Red Velvet.

Other matches include:

  • In an eight-man tag, the Dark Order (John Silver/Alex Reynolds/Evil Uno/Stu Grayson) will face Private Party and the Gunn Club (Billy and Austin).
  • Another Dark Order member, Colt Cabana, will be in action against QT Marshall (w/Allie).
  • Inaugural Women’s Tag Team Cup winners Diamante and Ivelisse will team up yet again to face Skyler Moore and Rache Chanel.
  • FTW Champion Brian Cage will face the debuting Megabyte Ronnie, a Grapplers Anonymous (Buffalo, NY) trained wrestler.
  • In an all Buffalo affair, The Butcher & The Blade (w/Eddie Kingston) will face Daniel Garcia and Kevin Blackwood. Butcher (Andy Williams), Garcia and Blackwood are also Grapplers Anonymous trainees as is Puf, the man that first appeared from the back during Kip Sabian’s best man announcement last Wednesday.
  • Two feuding teams will look to get momentum heading into Dynamite as Best Friends will face Maxx Stardom and Dontae Smiley while rivals Santana and Ortiz will take on Brian Pillman Jr. and Griff Garrison.
  • Will Hobbs will look for his second straight win when he faces former Impact and NXT talent Jessy Sorensen.
  • Penelope Ford (w/Sabian) will face Dani Jordyn.

Dark debuts Tuesday at 7 PM Eastern on AEW’s YouTube channel.

AEW Dark results: Natural Nightmares vs. Avalon & Cutler

Video —

Report —

Excalibur and Taz welcomed us to the show and previewed the card.

**********

Billy (w/ Austin Gunn) defeated John Skyler

Austin Gunn was on the outside being as obnoxious as humanly possible. Skyler went out after Gunn on the floor. Billy intervened.

Skyler got a little bit of offense as Billy climbed back inside, hitting a chop and a spear through the ropes.

Billy came back with a spinebuster and hit the Fameasser for the pin.

**********

Alex Marvez was in the parking lot interviewing Dustin Rhodes and Brandi Rhodes. Marvez noted that QT Marshall was nowhere to be found.

Dustin and Brandi assured Marvez that Marshall was on his way. Marvez put over Brandi’s role in leading the Natural Nightmares to the number two ranking in the tag division.

Marshall pulled up in a new blue Corvette with Allie in the passenger seat. Brandi and Dustin wanted to know what was up with the car. Marshall said Allie told him someone of his magnitude should have a real car.

Brandi and Dustin said they’re all family and they’re looking out for QT and worried about him. Brandi asked QT if he really thought Allie was into him. QT said with his new hair and new car, what’s not to be into?

QT said he would be back later after he and Allie grab a bite to eat.

**********

The Butcher & The Blade defeated Jon Cruz & Joe Alonzo

This was a complete squash.

Butcher hit Cruz with a leg drop and three gutbusters. Blade had Alonzo pinned after a tandem F5 with Butcher but pulled him up at the two count to deliver more punishment.

Butcher suplexed Cruz onto Blade’s knees and followed up with a cover for the pin.

**********

The unnamed interviewer was backstage with Peter Avalon, Brandon Cutler, and Leva Bates. She brought up Avalon and Cutler losing in the battle royal on last week’s Dynamite. Avalon and Cutler began to argue over who was worse. The interviewer was disgusted by these geeks and left.

Bates took the mic and said that two negatives equal a positive and Cutler and Avalon should team up with her in their corner.

Cutler agreed but only if Bates and Avalon agreed not to cheat.

This promo was a waste of time and resources.

**********

Christi Jaynes defeated KiLynn King

Jaynes has something. Obviously she has a great look but she’s a good athlete as well.

Jaynes and King traded shoulder tackles and taunts. Jaynes used some heel tactics to take control of the match. She hit some illegal strikes and pulled King’s hair in the corner.

King hit a diving cutter and rolled Jaynes up for a two count.

Jaynes reversed into a cradle and pinned King with a handful of tights.

**********

Santana & Ortiz defeated Big Game Leroy & EJ Lewis

As a showcase for Santana and Ortiz this was effective.

Big Game Leroy came to the ring playing a Nintendo Switch. Leroy refused to drop the Switch once the opening bell rang and Santana kicked it out of his hands.

Lewis tagged in and Ortiz worked him over. Ortiz hit a Gory Bomb. Santana tagged back in and hit hard chops and strikes.

Ortiz hit a Michinoku Driver. Santana hit a quebrada. Santana dared Leroy to tag back in.

Leroy tagged back in and got destroyed. Santana hit a cannonball in the corner.

Santana and Ortiz hit the Street Sweeper and simultaneously pinned Leroy.

**********

The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall w/ Brandi Rhodes) defeated Brandon Cutler & Peter Avalon (w/ Leva Bates)

Marshall and Dustin entered. QT called out Allie and walked her to the commentary desk where she joined the broadcast team for the match. Allie acted like QT was the hottest man in the world.

Allie said she’s encouraged QT to go vegan and he now eats smoothie bowls. She said there’s just something about a man and an apple. Excalibur asked what happened with her and Butcher and Blade and she completely ignored the question.

Taz said QT looked like a boy who just had his first kiss in the forest.

QT slapped the book out of Bates’ hands on the floor. Avalon was upset and hit a tope suicida. Cutler and Avalon began working over Marshall. Cutler hit a springboard forearm for a near fall. Avalon used a back rake and hit a leg lariat for a two count.

Allie said that if she was at ringside instead of Brandi her man wouldn’t be losing. She said she’s turning over a new leaf and Brandi should too. Cutler hit a senton and made a cover. Dustin broke up the pin.

Dustin and Avalon got tags. Dustin hit an inverted atomic drop, a bulldog, and a powerslam for a two count.

Cutler got a blind tag and hit a springboard elbow. Marshall broke up the pin attempt. Allie said QT is named QT because he’s such a cutie.

Bates jumped in. Brandi entered and hit her with a stunner. Avalon hit Bates with a spear by mistake.

Dustin hit Cutler with a destroyer. QT followed with a QT Cutter for the pin.

**********

Allie said that she renamed QT’s finish the Red Delicious.

Marshall posed on the buckle and made eyes at Allie. Allie blew him a kiss. Dustin and Brandi tried to get QT to celebrate with them.

**********

Marvez interviewed Dustin, Brandi, and Marshall to close the show.

Marvez said Dustin couldn’t have won without Brandi. Dustin agreed.

QT said he couldn’t have done it without her, then turned to look at Allie. He said Allie is the apple of his eye. He handed Brandi a chewed up apple and said he and Allie were off to celebrate.

Brandi and Dustin looked confused and disgusted. Me too, guys. Me too.

VIDEO: Being The Elite – ‘Life At Home’

Episode 197 of Being The Elite caught up with the cast as they adjusted to life in quarantine.

Some highlights include:

  • Matt Jackson ate some coffee beans and told his son that the coffee shop was open for business.
  • Nick Jackson gave a status report. He has been playing an arcade game recommended by Adam Cole “before he died.”
  • Nick and his wife welcomed the birth of a son. Nick said the baby’s name is Michael, so if he becomes a wrestler, he’ll be named Michael Jackson. [Editor’s note: also if he does not become a wrestler]
  • Matt and Nick worked out with Brandon Cutler in Nick’s home gym. Matt coughed but assured the guys he does not have coronavirus.
  • Kenny Omega gave an update from the set of Dynamite. He assured us that Colt Cabana was not in the room. Cabana’s face appeared on the television screen behind Omega.
  • Christopher Daniels had a 50th birthday party. His guest joined him via video conference. His gifts included a mask, toilet paper, bottled water and hand sanitizer.
  • Peter Avalon called Cutler from a landline while listening to a record player to taunt him about losing to Cabana.
  • Luchasaurus said he needs to find his tail.
  • Matt answered fan questions.
  • Hangman Page played Animal Crossing, watched Tiger King and worked out in full gear, all while ignoring calls from Nick, Kenny, Cody and Matt.

AEW Dark results: Private Party vs. Shawn Spears & Brandon Cutler

Video —

Report —

The Big News: Shawn Spears and Peter Avalon both walked out on their partners this week, leading to their teams losing.

**********

This past Tuesday, during my critically-acclaimed AEW Dark report, as Joey Janela hit Kip Sabian in the head with a prosthetic leg, I quipped “Do I really have nothing better to do on Tuesday nights?” Apparently AEW listened and here we are, for one week only, on Friday.

**********

Excalibur and Taz started the show by introducing all the matches.

**********

Luther defeated Sonny Kiss

51-year old Luther was making his AEW in-ring debut here. It still makes him younger than WWE Universal Champion Goldberg and ROH World Champion PCO. Not sure whatever happened to Mel and I wonder how she now feels about shaving her head for that Nightmare Collective angle.

Luther charged at the bell with a series of chops. Kiss tried to combat them with his speed, but Luther took his head off with a big boot. This was not the most exciting match in the world, but the fans were into it.

Kiss made his comeback with a series of boots and kicks and hit the Axes and O’s for a two count. Luther rolled out of the way of a moonsault, caught Kiss on a hurricanrana attempt, and laid him out with a powerbomb. Luther slapped on a Camel Clutch and began clawing at Kiss’ face before the submission.

Luther appeared to not want to break the hold, so Jimmy Havoc hit the ring, which caused Luther to run off.

**********

Tony Schiavone and Dasha Gonzalez were high above the arena to talk about Revolution tomorrow night. Gonzalez wants title changes, especially the World title.

They also talked about how great it is to work with Excalibur and Taz.

**********

The Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson w/ Alex Reynolds and John Silver) defeated Michael Nakazawa & Peter Avalon (w/ Leva Bates)

This might be the weirdest team in wrestling history.

Dark Order will take on Scorpio Sky & Frankie Kazarian of SoCal Uncensored tomorrow night at Revolution. Bates took the mic and chastised Avalon for insulting every city they go to. Bates said she brought the perfect book for him: Don’t Be A Dick.

Avalon took the mic, again, when Nakazawa tried to pour oil all over himself. Avalon said he didn’t want any of that comedy crap. He ordered Nakazawa out of the ring, but Avalon then slipped on the oil Nakazawa already spilled on the mat and Nakazawa started anyway. The Dark Order immediately cut off Nakazawa and laid in a beating.

Nakazawa slipped out of a suplex and tried to make a tag. However, ladies and gentlemen, right here on AEW Dark, we saw the biggest betrayal since Benedict Arnold sold the plans to West Point to the British. Nakazawa reached for the tag, but Avalon jumped off the apron and walked away! Nakazawa was quickly pinned with Fatality.

**********

They replayed the great Cody-MJF video package that aired on Dynamite.

**********

Dr. Britt Baker defeated Miranda Alize

Alize, in her second AEW match, was here to get her first win, but the booking god’s were not kind to her and she went one-on-one with The Doctor.

Alize held her own briefly, but Baker quickly took over. Baker actually used an old William Regal trick where she got Alize down in the corner and back kicked her while the referee gave her a warning.

Baker hit a corkscrew fisherman neckbreaker for a near fall that she disagreed about. That gave Miranda a few seconds to make her comeback, but it wasn’t enough. Baker took her down with a slingblade and locked on the Lockjaw for the submission.

**********

Private Party (Marq Quen & Isiah Kassidy) defeated Shawn Spears & Brandon Cutler (w/ Tully Blanchard)

Spears is really scraping the bottom of the barrel the last few weeks when it comes to getting tag team partners. From the winless Peter Avalon to the winless Brandon Cutler. What Cutler lacks in wins, he makes up for in having more polyhedral dice than anyone else in the locker room. Private Party spent three minutes throwing their beads to the crowd.

Cutler, Quen, and Kassidy had a great sequence where they went for moves on each other, but they kept being avoided or reversed. No one hit anything and it ended in a triple dropkick.

Spears did not like these shenanigans and demanded to be tagged in, which he did and took over when he got in. Cutler got back in and hit a nice series of moves on Private Party, before Spears tagged himself back in. The fans chanted “10,” and Spears shook his finger at the crowd and told them “no.”

Spears got the heat on Kassidy. While he distracted the referee, Tully tried to encourage Cutler to put the boots to Kassidy, which he refused to do. Kassidy eventually made the hot tag to Quen, who ran wild on both Spears and Cutler.

Quen did a dive over the top rope and Spears pulled Cutler in the way to take the blow. Spears yelled at Cutler and called him stupid. Then, ladies and gentlemen, right here on AEW Dark, in the biggest betrayal since Benedict Arnold sold the plans to West Point to the British, Spears threw his partner in the ring and walked out on him.

Cutler then hit the TPK on Quen and almost got the pin. Cutler begged Spears to come back. The fans chanted for Cutler as Spears walked off. Cutler then got finished off with Gin & Juice.

Just forget the same exact thing happened in the second match of the show.

**********

That does it for Dark. Thank you for reading. Stay tuned for AEW Revolution tomorrow night and Dynamite next Wednesday!

MJF vs. Brandon Cutler set for AEW on TNT premiere

Another match has been added to the card for AEW’s television debut.

On this week’s episode of Being the Elite, it was announced that MJF vs. Brandon Cutler will take place on the AEW on TNT premiere. In storyline, The Young Bucks booked Cutler in the match after being bullied by MJF on Being the Elite.

This will be Cutler’s second match for AEW. He also took part in the Casino Battle Royale on the Double or Nothing pre-show. The Young Bucks offering Cutler a full-time deal with AEW as a wrestler and executive content producer was shown on a Being the Elite episode in May.

MJF was also an entrant in the Casino Battle Royale at Double or Nothing. Hangman Page defeated Jimmy Havoc, Jungle Boy, and MJF in a four-way match at Fyter Fest, then Shawn Spears, Sammy Guevara & MJF defeated Darby Allin, Joey Janela & Havoc at Fight for the Fallen.

At All Out, MJF was in Cody Rhodes’ corner for Cody’s match against Spears.

The Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. is hosting the AEW on TNT premiere on Wednesday, October 2. It will also feature Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks vs. Chris Jericho and two mystery partners, Nyla Rose vs. Riho to determine the first AEW Women’s Champion, and Cody vs. Guevara.

AEW notes: Brandon Cutler signs, updated list of battle royal entrants

– On today’s episode of Being the Elite, it was announced that Brandon Cutler has signed a full-time deal with AEW as a wrestler and executive content producer. The Young Bucks talked about how hard Cutler works, how he’s back in pro wrestling after a seven-year break, and how the contract will help with his family’s financial situation.

– Cutler had already been announced as one of the entrants for Saturday’s Casino Battle Royale at Double or Nothing. Luchasaurus and Private Party (Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy) are also now set to take part in the match. Luchasaurus is former WWE developmental wrestler Austin Matelson, who has wrestled for Lucha Underground and ROH during his career.

AEW announced last month that Private Party had signed with them and would be part of their tag team division.

There will be 21 entrants in the Casino Battle Royale. The match will start with five wrestlers in the ring, with waves of five entering every three minutes after that. The 21st wrestler will then enter on their own. Whoever wins will receive a future shot against the first AEW World Champion.

Jimmy Havoc, Billy Gunn, MJF, Michael Nakazawa, Jungle Boy, Glacier, Sonny Kiss, Joey Janela, Ace Romero, Brian Pillman Jr., Sunny Daze, and Dustin Thomas have also been confirmed for the battle royal.

– The PAC vs. Hangman Page match from Wrestle Gate Pro’s show in Nottingham, England this past Saturday will be made available on AEW’s YouTube account at noon Eastern time tomorrow (May 21). As Dave Meltzer reported, the match was done because it will no longer be taking place at Double or Nothing.

Today’s Being the Elite is available to watch below:

The first Over Budget Battle Royale aired on the “Zero Hour” portion of All In.
