Mick Foley officially signs with AEW, meets MJF during Double or Nothing Zero Hour

Mick Foley is officially All Elite.

As the multiple time world champion joined Renee Paquette in the ring as part of the AEW Double or Nothing pre-show, Tony Khan announced that Foley had officially joined the promotion.

“He’s co-hosting The Buy In at AEW Double or Nothing tonight, and now it’s official: the legendary Mick Foley is ALL ELITE!!,” he wrote.

After making his entrance, Foley said that being at Double or Nothing was one of the biggest nights of his life, as AEW is the reason he fell in love with pro wrestling again. He said he considered Tony Khan a friend and is glad to be part of the family.

Towards the end of the Zero Hour pre-show, MJF interrupted Foley has he was sharing his predicton for the main event. The two exchanged words until MJF gave Foley a low blow. Darby Allin came out for the save but MJF fled before anything more could take place. Foley recovered enough to give Allin a pep speech, asking him to win tonight for the weird kids.

Foley publicly left WWE for political reasons

Foley’s AEW debut was announced earlier this week after reports surfaced that the company was interested in bringing him in.

Last year, Foley made headlines when he chose to cut ties with WWE, declaring he would not be renewing his Legends contract due to the company’s ties with President Donald Trump. He called Trump’s comments regarding director Rob Reiner’s death “incredibly cruel.”

The Rascalz officially announced as part of AEW

The Rascalz are officially All Elite.

After Dezmond Xavier and Zachary Wentz teamed with Eddie Kingston and Ortiz to defeat the Grizzled Young Veterans, Big Bill, and Bryan Keith in a parking lot brawl, Tony Khan officially announced that the trio had signed with All Elite Wrestling, posting their graphic on social media.

It was first announced back on the January 14 edition of Dynamite that The Rascalz were heading to AEW, with Xavier, Wentz, and Myron Reed appearing on the following episode of Collision. Last week, they reunited with Eddie Kingston and agreed to team with him to take on GYV and Big Bill and Bryan Keith. The eight men fought on top of a parking lot overseeing the Las Vegas strip. After Ortiz powerbombed Drake on a car hood, Kingston scored the win for his team after a DDT on Gibson.

When The Rascalz made their debut, one person was mysteriously absent: Trey Miguel. Although he had signed with the company, he was quickly released due to higher-ups at Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly blocking his signing due to previous controversial tweets. Miguel originally chose to walk away from pro wrestling following his release, but soon after chose instead to re-sign with TNA.

March 7, 2022 Observer Newsletter: Tony Khan buys Ring of Honor, Cain Velasquez charged with attempted murder

Tony Khan, who had only appeared in front of the crowd once before in the history of Dynamite (for the end of the Brodie Lee Memorial show), announced at the start of the 3/2 Dynamite that he had purchased Ring of Honor. He really gave no details and at press time hadn’t answered any questions regarding the purchase and goals.

Sinclair Broadcasting had made the decision to shut down the company late last year and relaunch it at a much lower cost, eliminating almost all talent contracts and likely only running PPV shows and television tapings. They had largely dropped house shows since coming back from the pandemic, which made exclusive deals with talent even more cost-ineffective.

The one major asset the company had was a tape library that dated back to 2002 and contained some tremendous matches with performers who would go on to make it big in WWE and AEW.

At first, when the announcement of the shutdown came, and rumors that the tape library would be for sale, both Tony Khan and WWE sources indicated they had not been approached about the library, meaning at the time it wasn’t for sale. WWE did have talks with ROH management when ROH was at its peak of popularity with the Young Bucks about purchasing the company, but the idea was to shut down the company and really just purchase the tape library which had early matches of many of WWE’s top stars like Kevin Owens (as Kevin Steen), Sami Zayn (as El Generico), Seth Rollins (as Tyler Black), Daniel Bryan (under his real name), Cesaro (under his real name) and many others.

The idea at the time was to get the valuable library and use it on the WWE Network and for documentaries and shut the company down because at the time ROH and NXT were battling over the hardcore fans and even going head-to-head in markets and in places ROH was beating NXT even with NXT’s advantages of being part of WWE and more advertising, but NXT did have an edge of better talent and the New Japan affiliation which in 2018 meant a lot.

The idea would be to eliminate NXT’s biggest competition for the hardcore fan base while picking up a valuable library. But the deal was never completed past ROH did make a deal to allow WWE some usage of their footage for WWE projects.
