The Undisputed Kingdom square off with Best Friends in a trios match on tonight’s AEW Rampage.
Undisputed Kingdom’s Roderick Strong, Mike Bennett & Matt Taven will face the Best Friends trio of Orange Cassidy, Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero in the featured contest on this week’s episode. Strong is set to challenge Cassidy for the International Championship at AEW Revolution next month.
The Young Bucks will return to the ring for the first time since November on tonight’s show as well, facing a pair of enhancement talents in tag team action. The Bucks are on the march towards a match with new Tag Team Champions Sting & Darby Allin at Revolution after they attacked the new champs at the conclusion of this week’s Dynamite.
CMLL’s Mistico will go one-on-one with Matt Sydal on the show as the CMLL invasion angle of sorts continues.
Kris Statlander & Willow Nightingale will team against Saraya & Ruby Soho of The Outcasts on tonight’s show as well.
Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Matt Menard were on the call for tonight’s action from Phoenix.
Undisputed Kingdom (Roderick Strong, Mike Bennett & Matt Taven) (w/ Adam Cole and Wardlow) defeated Best Friends (Orange Cassidy, Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero)
This was a good opener with a somewhat abrupt finish.
If you’ve been following along, this is the latest chapter in the build to Cassidy defending his International title against Strong at next month’s Revolution. There’s also been some tension between Beretta and Cassidy as of late, so that bears watching tonight.
Strong wanted no part of Cassidy when given the opportunity early as they are keeping them apart.
This was as good as you might expect going in, featuring a fun offensive sequence from all six men before the first ad break. The end was Strong hitting a running knee and his End of Heartache on Romero as he was hitting his forever clotheslines in the corner on Taven and Bennett, giving Taven the pin. It was an out of nowhere end that didn’t involve Cassidy at all.
After the match, Strong hit another End of Heartache on Romero onto two chairs before the heels scampered away.
Cassidy will defend the aforementioned title against Tomohiro Ishii on Saturday’s Collision.
The Young Bucks defeated Mondo Rox & Robbie Lit
I am among those surprised by AEW putting the Bucks’ first match since November’s Full Gear on Rampage — a match not even mentioned on Dynamite for some reason.
The Jackson brothers, with new generic music, were wearing (and wrestled in) their blood-soaked white three-piece suits worn at Dynamite when they obliterated Sting and Darby Allin. Nicholas even wrestled with his Kangol hat on.
This was a squash that featured the Bucks heeling it up, hitting a low blow on one of their opponents behind referee Rick Knox’s back. They won with the EVP trigger and then took to the mic to deliver a “show us some respect” and “call us by our God-given names” promo.
They congratulated Sting and Allin for winning the AEW Tag Team titles and said it was their objective to get their titles back. They said they won’t politick to get the shot and will compete in “competitive matches” like they did tonight. They announced they will be in action this Wednesday as well which will be against Top Flight.
I’m sure there are some who love this Bucks character. I’m not among them, but am on record to saying they need a great 2024 after a weird 2023. Perhaps they think this is the road there.
Mistico (w/ Star Jr. & Esfinge) defeated Matt Sydal
Mistico came out to perhaps some of the worst entrance music I have heard in a long time. While he was flanked by two CMLL mates, Sydal was sadly alone despite backing up the Blackpool Combat Club over the past week. Christopher Daniels was apparently busy too.
These two have some history as they battled once before in WWE as part of a no count out bout on a June 2011 edition of Raw when they were wrestling as Sin Cara and Evan Bourne, respectively.
Despite being a heel in the ongoing feud between CMLL and the Blackpool Combat Club, Mistico was playing up to the fans early on and throughout the bout as well. In the end, he hit a sweet-looking Spanish fly off the top rope to end a perfectly fine TV match. This CMLL run has been really entertaining.
– Renee Paquette caught up with Brian Cage and Prince Nana who took issue with FTW Champion Hook hitting him with a chair recently. Cage then challenged “any two sloppy joes” in the back to face him in a handicap match on Collision.
Hathaway sat in on commentary, replacing Menard who disappeared to Schiavone’s surprise.
Soho was reading a note in her jacket pocket that had her looking very suspect on her way down to the ring, so there’s that. I feel like I’ve seen this match 10 times already, but this is actually the first. Must be all the backstage segments and run-ins?
I haven’t taken too much to this feud to be that invested. I know there’s too many titles in AEW (thanks ROH!), but a Women’s Tag Team Championship could be justified with matches like this both servicing the rivalry and meaning something in the…standings. (Yeah, I don’t like them either.)
The big story here was Soho leaving The Outcasts, leaping off the ring apron when Saraya reached for a tag which was followed by Soho knocking Cameron out on her way out. Apparently that note Soho read was important…and more important than just watching past AEW shows to see what Saraya was up to.
Nightingale then took out Saraya with her Babe With The Power Bomb finish to get the win. Hathaway shook Statlander and then Nightingale’s hand, even getting a big hug. Then, Skye Blue appeared (sporting a big new tattoo on her right arm, I believe) and glared at the two until TBS Champion July Hart appeared next to her after a blackout. Then, they both glared until they eventually left, setting up a future match between them.
It appears the romance between Soho and Angelo Parker has a chance after all. That’s fitting given Valentine’s Day is next week which means we’re getting a follow up next week.
Note for next week: Rampage starts at 7 PM Eastern.
The Undisputed Kingdom and Best Friends will be on opposite sides of a six-man tag on the Friday, February 9 AEW Rampage.
In a match agreed to during a backstage promo segment on this week’s Rampage. Roderick Strong, Mike Bennett & Matt Taven of The Undisputed Kingdom will face Orange Cassidy, Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero of Best Friends on next week’s episode.
Cassidy laid out the challenge to Strong in an interview on Friday’s show, with Adam Cole of The Undisputed Kingdom suggesting the match participants.
Cassidy is set to defend the International Championship against Strong at AEW Revolution on Sunday, March 3.
The February 9 Rampage will be taped Wednesday, February 7 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona following a live airing of AEW Dynamite.
The announced card for the February 7 Dynamite:
Tony Khan has “a big announcement”
Winner gets an AEW World title shot at Revolution: Swerve Strickland vs. Hangman Page
AEW World Tag Team Champions Big Bill & Ricky Starks defend against Sting & Darby Allin
Chris Jericho vs. Konosuke Takeshita
Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Mistico, Volador Jr. & Hechicero
Women’s World title eliminator: Toni Storm vs. Red Velvet w/Deonna Purrazzo on commentary
The announced card for the February 9 Rampage:
The Undisputed Kingdom (Roderick Strong, Mike Bennett & Matt Taven) vs. Best Friends (Orange Cassidy, Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero)
It’s Saturday and that means Wrestling Observer Live with yours truly and a lot to talk about.
It’s yet another Saturday packed with tons of wrestling with still plenty to discuss from the past few days like the incredible and violent parking lot brawl on AEW Rampage, the A Block settled in the NJPW G1 tournament, Yota Tsuji pulling twin magic, and SmackDown.
Then, of course, there’s tonight’s WWE SummerSlam and AEW Collision.
Despite all of this wrestling, many people insist on focusing on a negative backstage experience. Is this necessary? It doesn’t affect business, so why are we talking about it?
We’ll talk about that and also how much talents are responsible for getting over. People talk about time and booking, but what about the wrestlers themselves?
A parking lot fight is set for this Friday’s AEW Rampage as Blackpool Combat Club’s Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli will take on Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta).
The match came to be after Wednesday’s anything goes three-way on Dynamite between Moxley, Beretta and Penta El Zero Miedo. After Beretta won, Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta were shown fighting with Taylor and Orange Cassidy in the crowd. After things settled down, Taylor took to the microphone afterward to make the challenge.
The match will not be held in Tampa, Florida, after Dynamite but rather at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida. It’s assumed to be filmed Thursday which is why Moxley was pulled from his scheduled match with Wrestling Revolver in Ohio.
Taylor and Beretta had a famous parking lot fight with Santana and Ortiz in September 2020 during the pandemic era at Daily’s Place.

After they attacked and bloodied up Nick Wayne in his home ring where his father taught him how to wrestle, Swerve Strickland & AR Fox will be in tag team action.
With all the turmoil surrounding the Jericho Appreciation Society, the group’s Anna Jay will take on Skye Blue.
In trios action, Keith Lee will team with The Hardys against Kip Sabian and The Butcher & The Blade.
Here’s the full card for Friday:
Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli) vs. Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta) in a parking lot fight
Anna Jay vs. Skye Blue
Swerve Strickland & AR Fox vs. TBA
Keith Lee, Jeff Hardy & Matt Hardy vs. The Butcher & The Blade and Kip Sabian
Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli will be in tag team action on this week’s AEW Dynamite.
Coming off last week’s loss in Blood & Guts, Moxley & Castagnoli will look to rebound against Penta El Zero Miedo & Rey Fenix of The Lucha Bros, and Trent Beretta & Chuck Taylor of Best Friends in a triple threat match.
Orange Cassidy is set to defend the AEW International Championship against AR Fox. The bout will be Fox’s sixth title shot in 25 career AEW matches. Including tag bouts, Fox’s career AEW record stands at 10-14 coming into the bout.
Darby Allin will go one-on-one with Swerve Strickland. Allin won last week’s Royal Rampage to earn a TNT title shot at next month’s All Out pay-per-view.
After a win over Skye Blue on last week’s Collision, Taya Valkyrie will face Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. on Dynamite.
PAC vs. Gravity, plus a promo from MJF & Adam Cole are also set for the show.
Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Tony Schiavone and Taz, as they run down the card for the evening before going to a video package about the history between Darby Allin & AR Fox. The advice that Fox gave to Allin is documented, as Allin put over how Fox gave him a place to stay for free while training. Allin said if anyone deserves a shot, it’s AR Fox, as without him, there might not be a Darby Allin.
Orange Cassidy defeated AR Fox to retain the AEW International Title
(An action packed opener, with the crowd showing support for both guys throughout. The post match was very interesting, as the attack by Fox was very unexpected and led to Darby Allin questioning why his friend would do what he did after he vouched for Fox to get this title shot.)
This is Fox’s sixth title match in AEW, as he was previously unsuccessful in four Trios Title bouts and one TNT Title match against Samoa Joe last November. Meanwhile, this is Cassidy’s 27th title defense of the International Title as Excalibur runs down all the injuries Cassidy has suffered over the course of his reign. Fox tried keeping Cassidy grounded early, but Cassidy responded with the hands in pocket mind games and powdered, only to eat a quick moonsault to the floor by Fox. Back inside, Fox used his speed to hit a roll through suplex, which Cassidy countered into a Stundog Millionaire. Fox answered by kicking out of the corner with a leaping cutter and twisting brainbuster for a near fall. Fox stayed in control for a majority of the commercial break.
Cassidy fought out of a third neckbreaker by Fox before both traded big boots to the face. Each man blocked cutter attempts before hitting a double neckbreaker for the reset. Cassidy went up and over in the corner and repeatedly slammed Fox head first into the buckle. Fox sent Cassidy to the outside and hit a huge somersault dive and senton back inside for a close two. Cassidy countered Lo Mein Pain into a dive outside of his own and spinning DDT back in the ring that led to Beach Break, but Fox kicked out. Fox blocked the Orange Punch, set Cassidy up in the corner and hit Lo Mein Pain for a close near fall of his own. Cassidy rolled to the apron, but Fox was there to hit a Rolling Thunder and DDT back inside. Fox missed a top rope 450, seemed to tweak his ankle, allowing Cassidy to wrench at it and get the Mouse Trap for the victory. Post match, Cassidy put his sunglasses on Fox, who snapped them in half and attacked Cassidy as a furious Darby Allin screamed at Fox at the ramp asking him what that was about and Fox didn’t have an answer.
After all that, Cassidy was trying to recover when Jon Moxley ran through the crowd and laid out Cassidy with the Death Rider, as Excalibur talked about Cassidy getting involved at the end of Claudio Castagnoli’s match in ROH Death Before Dishonor.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Chris Jericho & Don Callis, who talked about fans wanting Jericho to becoming part of Callis’ family. Callis said for Jericho to imagine a dream team with Konosuke Takeshita and Jericho said he’s willing to give it a try. Callis said their opponents will be Daniel Garcia & Sammy Guevara as Callis said that Jericho wanted them to spread their wings, as Jericho reluctantly accepted. Callis commissioned a work of art of their 1995 promo with Bad News Allen and there’s a painting shown of Bad News in the sky looking over Callis & Jericho.

A brief video of HOOK walking and taking a seat at the subway is shown before the subway speeds past and HOOK was gone.
Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta cut a PSA backstage telling kids not to play with fire or mess with the Blackpool Combat Club. Castagnoli said the beating PAC suffered at Death Before Dishonor is nothing compared to what he’d get when they cross paths again. Jon Moxley walked in and gave a warning to Lucha Bros & Best Friends, who will pay tonight for PAC’s mistake.
Jack Perry addresses HOOK & the FTW Title
Tony Schiavone introduced the new FTW Champion, who walked out with his Beethoven’s 5th Symphony playing and new I Beat HOOK shirt. Schiavone got the crowd to start really booing Perry, who said after one loss, HOOK realized he can’t hang with the big boys, so he’s now on the train to nowhere. The FTW Title wasn’t what Perry was talking about when he said he wanted to win gold in 2023 in AEW and said as soon as he put his hands on the title, it became the real deal. Perry said he is the best wrestler ever to hold the title and ran down Taz and his friends.
This brought out Jerry Lynn, who said in ECW, they paved the way for the current generation. Without ECW, there never would have been a Jungle Boy and told Perry to keep running his mouth; it will get his ass kicked. Lynn squared up, but Perry said he’s not dressed to fight, instead challenging Lynn to show up next week. next week before leaving. So I guess we’re getting Jack Perry against Jerry Lynn? Who had that on their 2023 Wrestling Bingo card? I certainly wasn’t expecting that.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Britt Baker, asking her reaction to Taya Valkyrie’s comments on Collision. Baker thanked Valkyrie and said she’s excited for their first time meeting, but will drag Valkyrie to the deep end and remind everyone that TBS is The Britt Show.
PAC submitted Gravity
(While most of this happened during commercial, the internet did get it’s reference to the irony of this match being booked in the first place. And as a bonus, we got Taz singing a little John Mayer. This was pretty much a dominating showing needed to put PAC back in the win column in AEW.)
During his entrance, Gravity actually acted like he was walking on the moon. PAC brilliantly tried to reintroduce himself to Gravity, as he was previously known as The Man That Gravity forgot. Taz meanwhile, shoe horned and briefly serenaded us with John Mayer’s ‘Gravity’. Gravity used his speed to send PAC to the floor early and tried to play mind games, only to eat a dropkick through the ropes by PAC, who stayed in control the entire picture in picture.
Back from commercial we saw the Blackpool Combat Club watching from their locker room. Gravity fought out of the corner with a leaping cross body, but PAC responded with a series of kicks. Both men went to the top and PAC connected with an avalanche brainbuster and quickly got the submission using the Brutalizer.
-We see post match comments from Renee Paquette with the Blind Eliminator Tournament winners MJF & Adam Cole. When Cole was about to start the promo, MJF cut him off and trash talked both members of FTR, mocking Dax Harwood constantly cutting the same promos and MJF will punch him so hard in the face he’ll spit out CM Punk’s jockstrap. The only initials that matter aren’t FTR, it’s MJF. Cole said never in a million years did he expect to be friends with MJF and said he has nothing to worry about with touching the AEW World Title post match. Cole said MJF is becoming one of his best friends and MJF said win, lose or draw, he wants Cole to know he’s getting a rematch for the World Title. Roderick Strong stormed in and shoved MJF, saying Cole shouldn’t trust him. Cole told MJF to leave as he said he loves Strong, but he’s pushing Cole away because he’s showing he doesn’t trust him.
**********
-Comments from FTR last week are shown with Renee Paquette as Wheeler said he’s excited about Collision on Saturday, but feels bad Adam Cole has been dragged into this. They respect Cole, but they hate MJF, calling him a generational ass kisser. Everyone who has been with MJF, including his fiancé, once they get to know him, they leave him. Harwood said he won’t get gimmicked up like MJF, since this is real to him. At Collision, MJF won’t make a mockery of professional wrestling and he’ll beat the sh*t out of Max on Saturday. Harwood apologizes to Cole, but says they are beating them at Collision.
(These two continue to add to their great series of matches, as this was just as wild as you’d expect. The Death Valley Driver spot was unreal and I question how Allin’s spine wasn’t broken, which, that’s not the only time I’ve questioned that in his matches. The finish you could really see coming after the opener tonight and it’s a way to actually do something with AR Fox, who, up to this point, had been just another guy on the roster. Aligning with Strickland hopefully allows him to break out a little bit going forward.)
After an early back and forth, we nearly saw an identical ending to the Royal Rampage on Friday with Allin on the apron this time, with Strickland diving to the outside, only to eat a Code Red as a result. Allin chucked Strickland into the steps, repositioned them, but Strickland reversed a whip, Allin cleared the steps, as Strickland launched off the steps with a massive House Call kick. Strickland controlled the entire break, working over Allin’s wrist and taunting Wayne in the process.
Strickland connected on a roll through Flatliner and huge suplex before both men traded a series of roll ups ending with Strickland kicking out of the Last Supper. Strickland rolled to the apron and Allin speared him through the ropes and landed right on his head on the outside in the process. Back inside, Strickland rolled out to the floor again and this time caught a charging Allin with a knee lift in mid air. Back inside again, Strickland hit a Swerve Stomp, but Allin kicked out. Both men went up to the top and Allin managed an avalanche over the top stunner sending Strickland to the apron. Allin wanted a Coffin Drop, but Strickland pulled out the feet and hit an unreal and violent looking Death Valley Driver off the second rope onto the edge of the ring.
The referee was distracted by Nana & Wayne, as Allin was about to roll back into the ring, but a hooded ring attendant shoved him into the ring post and put back into the ring. Strickland connected with the JML Driver to get the win. The masked man was AR Fox, who attacked Allin & Nick Wayne post match, trying a move with Allin’s skateboard and failing miserably. Prince Nana presented a Mogul Embassy shirt to Fox, who proudly put it on.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Matt Menard, Angelo Parker, Anna Jay & Tay Conti as Chris Jericho walked up and told them all to come into his dressing room. The painting Don Callis presented Jericho earlier is hung up and Jericho said forget about that, asking how the baby is to Tay Conti, who said the baby is fine, but asks what is going on with Jericho? Parker was about to give back his comb to Jericho, but said not quite yet. Anna Jay said Jericho is being selfish and said like Hager said; they can’t give Jericho their 100%. Everyone but Menard left, who told Jericho to figure things out, fast, before leaving himself.

Britt Baker submitted Taya Valkyrie
(Sometimes things just don’t gel right and this was one of those times. Both ladies tried hard, but that messed up spot early turned the crowd. While they did get them back with the forearm exchange, it just seemed things were off. Regardless, this was a needed win for Baker, who continues to get back on the winning track following an early elimination in the Owen Hart Tournament.)
Baker worked an early headlock, but Valkyrie used her power to gain control with her running corner knees. With the wrist trapped, Valkyrie fired off stiff chops and short arm lariat, but Baker tried a misdirect, only to sort of fall to Road to Valhalla. The crowd booed, as the whole spot looked really clunky, so I’m not sure whether or not Valkyrie was supposed to hit a proper one. Regardless, Baker’s didn’t get up enough, so Valkyrie just mounted and dished out strikes heading into break.
When they returned, the crowd still was booing, as Valkyrie was trapped in a Baker cravat and ate knee strikes. Valkyrie was sent into the corner, stumbled out and Baker hit a rip cord strike, only for Valkyrie to kick out at one. A forearm battle commenced as both ladies traded kicks and Valkyrie just dove for a lariat. Baker wanted Panama Sunrise, Valkyrie countered into a Northern Lights, but Baker got back in control, tried again and got the Panama Sunrise for two. Baker took too long putting on her glove and Valkyrie hit a Spear, wanted Road to Valhalla, but Baker spun out into Lock Jaw for the win.

The Lucha Bros (Rey Fenix & Penta El Zero Miedo w/Alex Abrahantes) defeated Claudio Castagnoli & Jon Moxley and Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta)
(A pretty jam packed main event, with the story playing a lot into what happened after the ROH Title match at Death Before Dishonor. That is where the bad blood started, as Castagnoli & Moxley once again found themselves on the losing end to close Dynamite, an unfamiliar territory for them as commentary said. I wouldn’t have minded Best Friends getting a win here, but if the story plays eventually more into PAC bailing on the BCC, it makes sense his Death Triangle buddies got the win here.)
Lucha Bros & Best Friends started fighting before The BCC even got to the ring, as the brawl was on with everyone. Taylor & Moxley brawled up the ramp before everyone else joined on the floor and Taylor hit a somersault dive off the stage onto the pile. Back to the ring, Fenix & Castagnoli had a nice exchange with Fenix doing a massive springboard arm drag, only to eat a Sexy Chuckie Knee from Beretta. Moxley jumped in with a cutter and Castagnoli cleaned house on everyone else with uppercuts. Fenix fell back into a tag from Beretta, who tackled Fenix for revenge of getting whacked in the face with a chair at Death Before Dishonor last Friday. Beretta missed a knee on Castagnoli, but did hit a Saito Suplex before trying a dive, only to eat an uppercut before takeoff. Moxley tagged in and destroyed Beretta with a King Kong Lariat into commercial break.
Beretta fought out of the corner with a missile dropkick on Castagnoli, tagging Taylor, who dropped Moxley with Sole Food. Moxley tried turning the tables, but ate a jump knee and German suplex by Taylor. Penta made the blind tag on Moxley and fired off Sling Blade and back stabber on Taylor. All six men started slugging it out in the ring until Best Friends just decided to hug and give the people what they wanted. Moxley & Castagnoli were sent outside and Lucha Bros were planted with dueling piledrivers from Taylor & Beretta.
Lucha Bros gained control with superkicks and submission attempts, as Penta snapped back on the arm of Beretta before hitting Made in Penta. Castagnoli & Moxley broke things up, beating down Best Friends with anvil elbows, stomps and powerbomb by Castagnoli on Taylor. Castagnoli wanted a Ricola Bomb, but Orange Cassidy’s music hit and he laid out Wheeler Yuta on the ramp. Cassidy slugged it out with Moxley as Beretta dropped Castagnoli with a Crunchie, but was told Castagnoli wasn’t the legal man, how in the world with all this chaos did Paul Turner keep track of that? The Lucha Bros jumped in and laid out Beretta with Fear Factor and Penta got the win.
Post match, commentary talked about how The BCC are in unfamiliar territory losing multiple matches, as Best Friends & Cassidy kept brawling with The BCC before Lucha Bros kind of made Moxley back off, as he bailed all while everyone else brawled. Excalibur informed us Moxley vs. Beretta vs. Penta next week in an Anything Goes three way on the 200th episode of Dynamite.

Taped in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Jim Ross, Excalibur, and Tony Schiavone on commentary. The show started shortly after 9:40pm EST after the end of the Heat/Bulls game.
Aussie Open (Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher) defeated Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta) to retain the IWGP Tag Team Championship (9:24)
This was great opener.
Excalibur plugged the next title defense for whoever wins this match in New Japan, then ran down the history of the titles. Chuck Taylor hit both members of Aussie Open with a tope con hilo. In the ring, Beretta caught Fletcher with a high crossbody off the top for a near fall.
Aussie Open took the fight to the floor, where they dropped both of the Best Friends on the ring open back first. Then Aussie Open each grabbed one of their opponents and ran around the ringside area (in opposite directions) to collide on the other side of the ring. Back in the ring, Aussie Open punished Beretta with a delayed vertical suplex.
After a split-screen break, Fletcher caught Beretta with a cutter off the middle rope for a near fall. Taylor and Davis brawled around ringside, where Taylor sent Davis into the ring steps. Back in the ring, Fletcher nearly fought out of a superplex attempt, but Taylor gave Beretta the assist (in a variation of the stacker suplex spot). After that, the Best Friends had to give the people what they want!
Beretta came off the top with a knee strike on Fletcher (while he was on Taylor’s shoulders) for a near fall. Fletcher caught Taylor with a spinning tombstone pilerdriver, and Davis yanked Beretta up by his legs and into a standard piledriver. Aussie Open finished Taylor off with the Coriolis and got the win. Great stuff.
– Sonjay Dutt tried assuage Mark Briscoe’s concerns with his new teammates, but this isn’t what Briscoe signed up for. They tried to give Briscoe a new shirt with the faces of the team on it, but Mark’s face was all the way off in the corner. Briscoe did not look happy.
– Tony Schiavone interviewed FTR in the ring. Cash Wheeler announced they were resigned with AEW for four more years. After those four years, they’re done with wrestling. Yeah, okay. Wheeler wants FTR to be known as the greatest tag team of all time. Dax Harwood still hasn’t figured out why the crowd likes them. He decided it must be because the fans like their redemption story.
– Lexi Nair interviewed The Hardys, Hook and Isiah Kassidy. Jeff was somewhat humble about facing his demons and his path back to AEW. Matt announced that this team will take on The Firm at the Hardy Compound in what will be the Firm’s Deletion.
Mark Briscoe, Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett & Satnam Singh defeated Manscout Jake Manning, Angelico, Luther & Serpentico (2:00)
Collectively, Angelico, Luther, and Serpentico are known as the Spanish Announce Project.
The heels jumped the Manscout’s team before the bell, even though Briscoe wanted to fight these guys fairly. And Jarrett continued to liberally cheat while Briscoe tried to face the Manning straight up. This match fell apart quickly. Singh dumped Serpentico onto the other members of the Spanish Announce Project, then gave Manning a chokeslam. Briscoe dropped the Froggy Bow for the pinfall. Briscoe left, disgusted with his partners.
– Recap of the feud between the Blackpool Combat Club and the Elite.
Taya Valkyrie defeated Emi Sakura
Valkyrie is undefeated and Sakrua’s only recent loss is to the Women’s World Champion, Jamie Hayter. Valkyrie got a near fall after a knee strike in the corner. Sakura tried to suplex Valkyrie, but she blocked it. Valkyire hit a clotheline for a near fall. Valkyrie tried for the Road to Valhalla, but Sakura blocked the move. Jade Cargill and Leila Grey came out to watch the match. This distraction allowed Sakura to get the advantage as the show headed to commercial.
During the break, Cargill and Grey ventured down to the ringside area. Sakura sent Valkyrie into the steel stairs, then tossed her back into the ring for a near fall. Valkyrie came back with a blue thunder bomb and a spear. Valkyrie dropped Sakura with the Road to Valhalla and got the pinfall.
After the match, Grey and Cargill ran in to attack Valkyire. Grey fell victim to the Road to Valhalla. Cargill and Valkyrie exchanged forearms, but Grey recovered enough to cheapshot Valkyrie, and Cargill dropped her with the Jaded Slam.
Everytime Cargill is on TV, she comes across as a star.
– Jose the Assistant challenged El Hijo de Vikingo on behalf of Dralístico for Vikingo’s AAA Mega championship. This match was made official for next Saturday’s Rampage.
– In the ring, Jericho Appreciation Society members Matt Menard, Angelo Parker and Jake Hager cut an awful rap on the Acclaimed. Jake Hager still loves his hat. The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn ran out to attack. The Acclaimed held open Matt Menard for Billy Gunn to cut off his nipples (with actual scissors!), but Parker and Hager made the save. The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn challenged Hager, Menard and Parker for Dynamite Wednesday. This match was made official later in the show.
New for Dynamite Wednesday: Jay White v. Kommander (in Jay’s first match as a full-time member of the AEW roster) and a confrontation between Adam Cole & Chris Jericho.
“Jungle Boy” Jack Perry defeated Shawn Spears (8:59)
In the pre-match promo, Mark Henry attempted to give this match a storyline by suggesting Spears was still a heavy for MJF. But, Spears shot that down. Spears is no longer an ally of MJF and wants to be the champion. Spears actually cut a very good promo laying out his intentions.
It seemed like Spears was trying to bring back the “Perfect 10” stuff from his NXT/WWE days. Both men teased dives to the floor early on. While Spears and Perry brawled around the ringside area, Darby Allin and Sammy Guevara were both shown watching the match in the back.
After a break, Perry fought out of a superplex attempt and caught Spears with a crossbody for a near fall. Spears hit a pump kick, but Perry came back with a pair of supericks. Perry hit his rebound lariat. Spears sent Perry over the top to the apron, but Perry caught him with an enziguri. Perry tried to spring back into the ring, but Spears caught him and drove him down with a draping DDT for a near fall. Spears went for the C4, but Perry countered and hit a leaping flatliner for a near fall. Spears came back with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Spears went for the La Magistral cradle, but Perry shifted his weight and held Spears down for the three count.
After the match, Perry and Spears shook hands in a show of respect. Now Perry, Guevara and Alli are all 2-0 since they all stated their intention to take MJF’s AEW World title.
Final Thoughts:
This crazy idea of giving all the other pillars a bunch of wins in advance of a title match with MJF just might work.
Aussie Open will defend the IWGP Tag Team titles against Best Friends on Friday’s AEW Rampage.
Trent Beretta and Chuck Taylor of Best Friends issued the challenge to Aussie Open’s Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles in a backstage promo on Wednesday’s Dynamite, and the match was officially announced for Friday’s Rampage episode.
Aussie Open defeated Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI to win the IWGP Tag titles at Saturday’s NJPW Sakura Genesis event.
The return of Shawn Spears has also been announced for Rampage.
Spears last wrestled for AEW in October in Toronto, teaming with FTR in a trios bout. On Rampage, Spears will face “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry.
FTR, the AEW World Tag Team Champions, have also been announced for a promo on Rampage.
Taya Valkyrie will take on Emi Sakura on Rampage in a women’s division contest.

This week’s episode of AEW Dark: Elevation featured matches filmed last Wednesday in El Paso, Texas, prior to Dynamite. Per usual, Paul Wight and Matt Menard were on commentary.
Dark Order (Alex Reynolds, Evil Uno & John Silver) defeated El Dragon, El Cobarde & Vary Morales
Dark Order won in dominant fashion, picking up the victory after the trademark Silver/Reynolds flurry of combo offense. Of note, this particular Dark Order unit have won nine straight which could portend a future Trios title match them.
– Matt Hardy apologized to Ethan Page for blowing their shot in their challenge of AEW Trios Champions The Elite on Rampage recently even though Isiah Kassidy took the pin. Page wasn’t buying it and accused Hardy of playing to the camera. Hardy then kissed Page’s ass for a solid minute and bought Page a shirt to make amends. Page bought it and now, they are great friends.
Big Bill defeated Gino
I’m not sure what Bill is going with for a look, but jeans, Timberlands and visible Calvin Klein underwear was the order of the day. This was Gino’s AEW debut and it ended with him getting pinned after a big chokeslam. I’m still not sure if AEW knows what he’s doing with Morrissey and The Firm but time will tell.
Eagle-eyed AEW fans will remember DD Doom (aka Daddi Doom) as flanking MJF during one of the Dynamites when he was hanging out in a luxury box. It felt strange to see Cargill in an early Dark: Elevation tag match, but here we are. Cargill picked up the quick win for Team Baddies after Jaded on Tormenta.
Brian Cage (w/ Prince Nana) defeated Jastin Taylor
I know some people don’t care for Cage, but you rarely see him in a dud even in squashes like this. He won a quick one here with the Drill Claw and moves on to face “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry on Wednesday’s Dynamite.
Nyla Rose & Emi Sakura (w/ Vickie Guerrero) defeated Skye Blue & Madison Rayne
El Paso native Guerrero got a chance to scream “Excuse me!” and some other inaudible things on the mic pre-show as the crowd chanted “Eddie.”
While I understand that more title belts aren’t at the top of anyone’s list for AEW wishlist items, I feel like Women’s Tag Team titles could give a lot of contracted talent something to do. There are so many of these women’s tag matches on Elevation that they need something to strive toward.
As action spilled to the outside and Blue took Sakura into the guardrail, Guerrero hit a spear on Blue out of nowhere that popped the crowd. Sakura later took out Blue with a crossbody into the barricade before Rose took out Rayne with a death valley driver for the pin and win.
Yuka Sakazaki defeated VertVixen
VertVixen is an AEW YouTube show regular and is also the current DEFY Women’s titleholder while Sakazaki is chasing an eventual match with ROH Women’s Champion Athena, likely at Supercard of Honor.
VertVixen got some offense in, but Sakazaki eventually picked up the win after the Magical Dream Girl Splash, preceded by an airplane spin slam. Afterward, Athena ran in and laid out her future challenger with a title belt shot, threw her into the ringside stairs, and then tried to injure her knee by sliding into the stairs with Sakazaki’s leg trapped in them. Sakazaki kept coming and got laid out with a big boot for her trouble.
Josh Woods (w/ Mark Sterling, Tony Nese & Ari Daivari) defeated Man Scout
Man Scout Jake Manning has competed in AEW before and was still focused on reading his Boy Scouts book prior to the match. Woods won in super short order with a rolling German suplex that looked like it was in slow motion. Woods moves on to face Mark Briscoe on Wednesday.
Best Friends defeated Aydan Colt & Frank Stone
It’s rare that a squash match gets the Elevation main event slot, but here we are. Stone and Colt did get brief spots of offense in, but this ended in a few minutes after the Soul Food/half n’ half suplex combo followed by Taylor getting the pin after a piledriver.
The second semifinal bout in the AEW World Trios Championship tournament is now set for next Friday’s live Rampage.
Dark Order’s John Silver, Alex Reynolds & 10 will take on Best Friends’ Orange Cassidy, Trent Beretta & Chuck Taylor with the winner advancing to the tournament finals at next Sunday’s All Out.
The winner next Friday will take on the winner of the other semifinal bout which is set for this Wednesday’s Dynamite: The Elite (Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks) vs. United Empire (Will Ospreay & Aussie Open).
Silver, Reynolds & 10 defeated House of Black (Malakai Black, Buddy Matthews, & Brody King) Friday to advance in the tournament, assisted by a distraction from Miro. House of Black beat down Miro afterward, leading to Sting and Darby Allin making the save.
The Trios tournament match is the only thing announced for Friday’s live show from the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Best Friends have advanced to the AEW World Trios Championship tournament semifinals.
Orange Cassidy, Trent Beretta, and Chuck Taylor defeated Daivari, Slim J, and Parker Boudreaux of Trustbusters on Friday’s Rampage episode to advance to the semifinals.
Best Friends now await the winners of House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews) vs. Dark Order (John Silver, Alex Reynolds, and Preston “10” Vance), with those two teams set to face off on next Friday’s Rampage episode.
On the other side of the tournament bracket, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks await the winners of the Death Triangle (PAC, Penta El Zero Miedo, and Rey Fenix) vs. United Empire (Will Ospreay, and Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis of Aussie Open), a match set for the August 24 Dynamite episode.
The tournament finals are set for the All Out pay-per-view in Chicago on Sunday, September 4, with the winners being crowned the first AEW World Trios Champions.
It’s Monday and you know what that means: a seven-match AEW Dark: Elevation taped last Wednesday at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois. Tony Schiavone, Mark Henry and Paul Wight were on the call.
Bobby Fish defeated Robert Anthony
Anthony used his speed to overwhelm Fish, but the latter’s striking balanced things out. Fish (2-0 this year) worked Anthony’s left leg throughout the match. He won after a combination of an exploder suplex into the ropes and a roundhouse kick.
Emi Sakura, The Bunny & Diamante defeated Heather Reckless, Queen Aminata & Skye Blue
Before the match started, Blue got one of the biggest pops of the show as she’s from Chicago. The heels tried to outsmart the babyfaces, but Aminata and Blue were able to fend them off. Bunny, Diamante and Sakura have had more experience as a trios unit which was a factor. One of the best spots was Sakura tying up both Skye and Reckless in a submission attempt. In the end, Bunny hit the Rabbit Hole on Reckless for the win.
Scorpio Sky (w/ Dan Lambert) defeated Stephen Wolf
This was Wolf’s AEW debut and basically a squash loss. Sky won after hitting the TKO to improve his overall record to 54-16. On commentary, Ethan Page talked about both his and Sky’s goal of winning the TNT title. Also, according to Page, the Men of the Year trim each other’s eyebrows.
Julia Hart defeated Arie Alexander
This was Alexander’s AEW debut. Since getting the black mist from Malakai Black, Hart has worked a more aggressive style and this match was the best example of that. She showcased her agility with a scorpion kick, winning after submitting Alexander with a leg scissors. She evened her record at 9-9 with the win.
Is Hart becoming more aggressive a sign that she’ll become the third member of the House of Black? We might find out soon when she takes her eyepatch off.
Dante Martin defeated Aaron Solo (w/ Nick Comoroto)
Solo is a very underrated guy and in this match, he made Martin look like a billion bucks every time he could. Comoroto, as always, intervened on Solo’s behalf, but Martin’s speed and agility were too much for both. He won with the always impressive Nosedive moonsault to improve his record to 39-19.
The Acclaimed & Gunn Club (w/ Billy Gunn) defeated Brock Anderson, Lee Johnson, Lee Moriarty & Matt Sydal
Max Caster and his opening rap made a reference to Chicago’s murder rate.
The heels tried to isolate Moriarty, but he was able to hold on his own despite the numbers game being against him. This was a good showcase for the Gunn Club and their act, especially when fans chant “ass boys.” This had a lot of things going for it and was the best match of the night. Austin Gunn won with a roll-up and the use of The Acclaimed’s boom box.
Best Friends (w/ Kris Statlander) defeated Chaos Project
Paul Wight mentioned on commentary that the reason Luther was missing these last few weeks was because he was in Egypt helping an archeological team regarding a mummy. He later said he was just messing around.
Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta started off strong to open things up, but Chaos Project and their gimmick of Luther using Serpentico as a weapon helped them turn things around. They isolated Beretta for a while and even did the Best Friends’ hug spot. Serpentico tried to slam Luther on Trent, but he failed miserably. Trent and Taylor (27-11) hit Strong Zero on Serpentico to pick up the win.
Final Thoughts:
For the third week in a row, Sydal and Moriarty were the MVPs of Elevation. Their matches are always the best on the show. Henry, Wight and Schiavone were really fun on commentary tonight, not on the same level of Taz and Excalibur on Dark, but fun in their own way.
