Big Swole details reasons for AEW departure, Tony Khan responds

Big Swole on her podcast said that a lack of diversity and structure led to her and AEW mutually deciding to part ways.

On her Call In podcast (h/t Fightful), Swole discussed how the structure within the company seemed to be “a little off”, pointing out the lack of time for women and new talent coming in.

“I know fans of the company don’t take criticism well sometimes. But know this, this is someone from the inside, the structure is a little off,” she said. “It’s fine to be loose, but I like to have a little bit more structure. I felt like the women shouldn’t have gone through everything they went through just to get on time. You’re signed to this big company, you should get time.  All these men are getting time, but the women aren’t getting anything or you’re not putting people on TV because more people are coming in. There are more people coming in, but you don’t have enough product for all of these people.”

Swole also discussed what she felt was a lack of diversity, particularly within AEW’s hierarchy.

“I do not beat around the bush when it comes to diversity and my people,” she said. “There is no representation, truly, and when there is, it does not come across in the black community as genuine, at all. And I don’t know why everybody is so afraid to accept it or say it, but it’s not a good look. What happens is, you have this wonderful company that treats people like family, but there is nobody that looks like me that is represented at the top. They are not in the room with them. They’re not helping to necessarily influence decisions, but to explain why certain slang, why they are certain words that shouldn’t be said. There is no one else who can explain our culture and experience except for us.”

“I believe that [AEW] is making better strides than before, but a couple of things need to be fixed,” she later added. “You have to be able to call people out because not everything is not perfect. I hope they listen to this with an open heart and not just, ‘Ah, she’s just saying this because of XYZ.’ I genuinely want them to succeed. I love art. I love to be creative and I love wrestling and I want it to succeed and I want the people in it to succeed if they are genuine people. I want WWE to succeed. I just want wrestling to flourish and I don’t want it to be a long-forgotten, Tartarian sport where ‘in the old days, we used to wrestle,’ I want nothing but the best, but I also want the change and application to happen. With promises you made to be diverse, I want to see that. Not just with black people. I would love to see a dark-skinned Latina or Latino or Hispanic or just something, more Asians. I feel like Asians, Indians do not get love. They just don’t. It’s such a big gap. I hate the fact that I turn on the TV and it’s the same stuff over and over again, like the Truman show. Hopefully, they get the message.”

Tony Khan commented on Swole’s comments, writing on Twitter: “The top 2 @AEW execs are brown (me & Megha)!! Jade, Bowens, Caster, Dante, Nyla, Isiah & Marq Quen all won on tv this month. The TBS Title Tournament has been very diverse. I let Swole’s contract expire as I felt her wrestling wasn’t good enough.”

Swole last wrestled on the September 21 episode of AEW Dark, where she defeated Allie Katch. On November 30, she announced that she and AEW had decided to mutually part ways.

Big Swole, AEW mutually decide to part ways

Big Swole has announced that she and AEW have mutually decided not to renew her contract with the company.

On Twitter, Swole wrote that after speaking with AEW President Tony Khan and other higher-ups in the company, they have decided not to renew her contract with AEW. She wrote the following:

Over the past couple of months my life has taken on the mantra grow, learn, change. Dealing with shadow work took strength I didn’t know I had. I think God for my loving family because they got me through some of the roughest months of my life. But I realized the real test is application. So I took my leap and after speaking with [Tony Khan] and AEW higher officials we’ve decided not to renew my contract with All Elite Wrestling.

This was a hard decision but a needed one. I am grateful for their understanding and that we could mutually come to this agreement. I’ve enjoyed my time with AEW and wish them all the best. I appreciate their love and welcoming me into the family. Today is my last day and as bittersweet as it is, I am proud to say that I’ve lived my dreams while making a difference. That is Swole Mentality.

Swole had been part of the company since All Out 2019, where she competed in a 21-woman Casino Battle Royal. Her last match took place on the episode of AEW Dark that aired on September 11, where she defeated Allie Katch.

Four matches added to AEW Dark lineup

AEW has added four matches to Tuesday’s AEW Dark lineup.

Big Swole details battle with Crohn’s disease

Big Swole wrote on social media about her experiences with Crohn’s disease over the last year.

Swole wrote on social media about her recent struggles with the disease and how the COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect on her treatment:

This past year has been filled with ups and a lot of downs. After my bout with pneumonia early last year, I was informed that resuming my medicine for Crohn’s would result in death given the COVID-19 circumstances. Seeing as how the biologic I was on shuts down my immune system and acts as such resuming my medicine was not an option. I was doing alright self-managing until the flare ups started in the fall.

As some of you may not know Crohn’s attacks the body as a whole so on top of my intestines issues different body parts would lock up and become incapable of bending at the joints. Some days I could barely walk and that took a toll on me emotionally and mentally. Living with this disease may seem like a thorn and it is but it also shows me that His grace is sufficient and no matter what happens I will smile because I am more than a conqueror. I am Swole and that mentality/faith will carry me through it all.

I ask that you bare with me, I’m getting the treatments that I need and my journey to complete healing is underway. Thank you for your love and thoughtful messages, I appreciate them and you! Much love to everyone, be safe! #Chronies

Tony Khan noted during the post-Revolution media scrum that Swole had been out of action due to the disease. Swole last wrestled on the edition of AEW Dark that aired on January 7, but did appear on the special Saturday edition of AEW Dark that aired last weekend. She cut a promo saying that she was the number one ranked woman before the Women’s title eliminator tournament and wanted a shot at the champion.

Women’s title match added to AEW Dynamite anniversary episode

Another title match has been added to the card for AEW Dynamite’s one-year anniversary.

It was announced today that Hikaru Shida will defend her AEW Women’s Championship against Big Swole on Dynamite next Wednesday (October 14). The AEW World Championship, Tag Team titles, and TNT Championship will also be on the line on the anniversary episode. Jon Moxley is defending the AEW World Championship against Lance Archer, FTR are defending their AEW Tag Team titles against Best Friends, and Cody is defending the TNT Championship against Orange Cassidy.

Swole was in action on Dynamite this week, defeating Serena Deeb. Swole also defeated Skyler Moore on AEW Dark this week.

Shida has been AEW Women’s Champion since winning the title from Nyla Rose at Double or Nothing this May. Her most recent title defense was against Thunder Rosa at All Out last month. Swole defeated Britt Baker in a Tooth and Nail match at All Out.

Kip Sabian & Miro teaming together in tag team action is also set for next Wednesday’s Dynamite anniversary episode. Plus, MJF is promising that he will make “a career-defining announcement.”

Big Swole vs. Serena Deeb added to this week’s AEW Dynamite

Big Swole will make her return to AEW Dynamite Wednesday in a match against Serena Deeb.

Swole hasn’t been in action since her Tooth and Nail win over Britt Baker at September’s All Out, but does have a Dark match set for Tuesday against Skyler Moore. If she wins, she’ll go into Wednesday on a six-match winning streak.

After making her debut in early-September against NWA Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa on Dynamite and signing a contract shortly thereafter, Deeb is coming off a September 10th Dark win over KiLynn King.

This Wednesday’s show is centered around the 30th anniversary celebration for Chris Jericho’s wrestling career.

The card announced thus far:

  • TNT Champion Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Cody in a dog collar match
  • FTW Champion Brian Cage vs. Will Hobbs
  • Tag Team Champions FTR vs. Hybrid2 in a 20-minute “Brush With Greatness” challenge

Baker-Swole moved to AEW All Out main card, new pre-show match set

AEW has announced a change to the lineup for this Saturday’s All Out pay-per-view.

The “Tooth & Nail match” between Britt Baker and Big Swole has been moved to the All Out card. A tag match has been announced to take its place on the pre-show, with Private Party facing The Dark Order’s 3 & 4 (Alex Reynolds & John Silver).

Baker vs. Swole being moved to the main card was announced via a tweet from AEW president and CEO Tony Khan: “Hey let’s just make All Out tomorrow night the best wrestling ppv we can possibly do. Now on the main ppv card: Dr. Britt Baker v. Big Swole in the 1st ever Tooth & Nail Match emanating from Dr. Baker’s dental office, anything goes, no DQ + falls count anywhere. See you tomorrow!”

Baker vs. Swole will be a cinematic match.

The All Out pre-show will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday. The main card will then start at 8 p.m. Eastern. Here’s the updated list of announced matches for the show:

Baker vs. Swole AEW Buy In match to be cinematic in presentation

As first discussed on last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio, the Britt Baker vs. Big Swole “Tooth and Nail” match on Saturday’s All Out pre-show will be cinematic in presentation.

AEW President Tony Khan confirmed the news Thursday during a media call, saying the main reasons are that Baker is still recovering from her injuries and that they will have live fans in attendance, insinuating that they want to give her more time to get the ring rust off.

Khan also answered criticism about the match being on The Buy In, saying they want to put stars on the pre-show to help sell the PPV which is a philosophy of the company’s. At this point, it’s believed Baker vs. Swole will be the sole pre-show match.

On WOR, Dave Meltzer said he believed the setting was going to be at Baker’s dental office. The stipulations, if there are any, weren’t explained when it was announced on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

The two have been feuding for months but this will mark Baker’s first return to action since her knee was injured during a May episode of Dynamite.

Baker vs. Swole ‘Tooth & Nail’ match set for AEW All Out pre-show

A feud that has been building for months will finally reach its boiling point Saturday as Britt Baker and Big Swole will go one-on-one on the AEW All Out Buy In pre-show this Saturday.

However, a stipulation was added on Wednesday’s Dynamite as it’s now a “Tooth and Nail” match but what that entails wasn’t explained.

Baker and Reba attacked Swole on Dynamite, jumping her from behind and clamping on the Lockjaw while rubbing pizza in her face.

Baker has been out of action since May when she injured her knee during a tag team match on Dynamite, suffering a partial LCL tear, an interior tibia fracture, and a small tendon tear. Despite the injury, she has been a wheelchair-bound fixture on Dynamite throughout her recovery.

That match joins a card that also includes:

  • AEW World Champion Jon Moxley vs. MJF
  • AEW World Tag Team Champions Kenny Omega and Hangman Page vs. FTR
  • AEW Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida vs. NWA Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa
  • Chris Jericho vs. Orange Cassidy in a Mimosa Mayhem match
  • Young Bucks vs. Jurassic Express
  • 21-man Casino Battle Royale for an AEW World title shot
  • Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara in a Broken Rules match
  • Dark Order (TNT Champion Mr. Brodie Lee, Colt Cabana, Evil Uno and Stu Grayson) vs. The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall), Scorpio Sky and Matt Cardona

AEW reveals Britt Baker’s tag team partners for Dynamite

Britt Baker’s tag team partners for Dynamite have been revealed.

AEW’s social media confirmed that Britt Baker will team with Rebel and Penelope Ford to take on Big Swole in a 3-on-1 handicap tag match for Dynamite. This follows a segment that took place on Dynamite Satuday where Baker successfully recruited Ford as a tag partner. Ford agreed after Britt promised that “Reba” would do Ford’s makeup for a year.

This would mark Baker’s return to the ring after a leg injury suffered back in May.

Already announced for next week’s Dynamite include Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara, a tag team gauntlet match featuring Natural Nightmare, Young Bucks, Best Friends, and FTR with the winners getting a AEW Tag Team title shot at All Out, and a contract signing between MJF and Jon Moxley for their match at All Out.

Due to NBA playoffs, Dynamite will not air in it’s normal timeslot. It will instead air on Thursday at 8 p.m. EST.

AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup results: Final opening round matches

by Parker Klyn

Tonight is week two of AEW’s Deadly Draw Women’s Tag Team Cup, as we conclude the first round of matchups. Shaul Guerrero is the ring announcer, and Tony Schiavone is joined by Veda Scott on commentary.

Previously announced for today’s show was AEW backstage interviewer Dasha Gonzalez & former WWE developmental talent Rachael Ellering (daughter of Paul Ellering) vs. Ivelisse and Diamante.

The opening video package and song for this tournament is excellent. AEW has a bit of a depth problem in their women’s division but it really makes them look like stars.

Big Swole was interviewed backstage, and the interviewer had a surprise for her. It was Lil Swole, known as Nicole Savoy in the indies. It was also revealed that Leva Bates is teaming with Rache Chanel, and they faced off next.

First Round: Big Swole & Lil Swole defeated Leva Bates & Rache Chanel (with Peter Avalon)

This was the weakest match of the tournament yet. Bates and Chanel did some comedy, so while the Swoles looked dominant, it was hard to take their opponents seriously. Bates’ work was okay but Chanel looked really weak. Lil Swole looked very competent, however –– she deserves a contract in this division, although the fact that she is in fact bigger than Big Swole is a bit comedic.

Bates did her shushing gimmick during her entrance. She also brought a fashion book as a gift for Chanel. This was also Big Swole’s first match back from kayfabe suspension.

Chanel and Lil Swole started off. Schiavone and Scott put over Lil Swole’s technical aptitude. Chanel and Bates teased dissension, as well as being in over their heads against their more-talented opponents.

The Swoles performed some cool tag maneuvers and Lil Swole locked in a modified crossface on Chanel, but Avalon distracted the ref and Chanel attacked with a ruler.

Lil Swole eventually made a comeback to get the hot tag to Big Swole. Big Swole got a visual pinfall on Bates, but Chanel broke it up in a mistimed spot. The finish came when the Swoles hit a combination flatliner/blockbuster on Bates.

We got an advertisement for All Elite Heels, the new women-focused wrestling community established by Brandi Rhodes.

Ivelisse and Diamante were shown meeting after their chip selections.

Dasha was told by Shaul Guerrero that she’d be competing in the tournament, which surprised her. When she drew her chip, Rachael Ellering showed up, and they tried to get across that they recognized and remembered each other from working in WWE.

First Round: Ivelisse & Diamante defeated Rachael Ellering & Dasha

As far as I can tell, this was only the second professional match of Dasha’s career, and her first in almost five years. You honestly wouldn’t have known it. While still very green and indecisive at times, Dasha’s a great athlete and she didn’t have a single noticeable botch.

In terms of the match, it wasn’t anything special but it was still better than everything else in the tournament’s first round. There was a classic, simple tag formula with by far the best face/heel dynamic we’ve seen in the Deadly Draw.

Dasha performed a corner arm-drag and a kip-up at the bell. She kept the offense up with a running dropkick before tagging in Ellering. Dasha also performed a nice cartwheel splash.

Ivelisse and Diamante eventually cut off Dasha and worked her over, performing frequent tags and hitting lots of double-teams. Dasha eventually escaped to Ellering for the hot tag.

Ellering hit some great knife-edged chops on Ivelisse and nearly got a pinfall with a running senton. Diamante held Ellering against the ropes, but Ellering escaped and Ivelisse hit her partner off the apron. Ellering almost got the pinfall with a springboard leg drop, but Diamante broke it up.

After tagging in, Diamante hit a nice-looking cazadora stunner on Dasha, who kicked out. The heels hit a couple more double-teams. Diamante dispatched Ellering, and Ivelisse hit the running Yoshi Tonic for the win.

Alex Marvez interviewed the Swoles backstage. They were really charismatic, and I expect them to be the favorites (along with Brandi and Allie) going forward.

Marvez then interviewed Dasha. She views this match as a starting point, and hopes that she gets a chance to compete again. She thanked AEW for the opportunity.

Finally, Marvez interviewed Ivelisse and Diamante. Ivelisse said they got off to a rocky start, but their respect for the craft is what pushed them through.

Next Monday will be the semifinals, where Big & Lil Swole will face the Nightmare Sisters and Ivelisse & Diamante will face Tay Conti & Anna Jay.

The show was about 37 minutes, almost the exact same length as last week.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, I thought the second week of the Deadly Draw was better than the first. The opener was pretty miserable as a match, but Lil Swole is someone AEW should be chomping at the bit to bring in more often. The main event was a good match, with the novelty of Dasha competing making it even more compelling.

I’m still waiting to see what the outcome of this tournament will be, although the idea of it returning next year with (hopefully) access to international talent should make it a far more worthwhile endeavor.

Savoy appears in AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup, semifinals set

Nicole Savoy made her return to AEW on tonight’s Women’s Tag Team Cup tournament event, with semifinals now set for next week.

Savoy went under the name of Lil Swole, teaming with Big Swole to take on Rache Chanel and Leva Bates. The Swoles defeated Bates & Chanel to move on to the semifinals. Savoy had previously competed in last year’s Casino Battle Royal at All Out.

Savoy has wrestled for a number of independent promotions since 2011, including appearances in SHIMMER, RISE, and Stardom. She also competed in the 2017 Mae Young Classic tournament, advancing to the second round before being eliminated by Candice LeRae. She was most recently working Ring of Honor dates prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In another opening round match, Diamante & Ivelisse defeated interviewer Dasha and Rachael Ellering to also advance to the semifinals.

With those wins, the semifinals have now been set for next week’s show. Big Swole and Lil Swole will face the Nightmare Sisters (Brandi Rhodes & Allie) and Ivelisse & Diamante will face Tay Conti & Anna Jay.

Britt Baker to choose Big Swole’s opponent on AEW Dynamite

As a continuation of their rivalry, AEW announced that Britt Baker will choose Big Swole’s opponent in a newly announced match for tonight’s edition of Dynamite.

AEW president Tony Khan announced that with the move, Swole’s suspension is lifted and that if Swole wins, she will earn a shot at Baker in the future. She was suspended in storyline following the July 8th Dynamite for kidnapping Baker and leaving her in a dumpster on the show.

Baker is on the sidelines recovering from two tears and a fracture in her knee suffered in May, but has said she will return at September’s All Out pay-per-view where the Swole match would most likely take place if she wins.

Tonight’s Dynamite will also feature:

  • AEW World Champion Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin with MJF getting the winner at All Out
  • Matt Cardona (Zack Ryder) & TNT Champion Cody vs. Jon Silver and Alex Reynolds of The Dark Order
  • Kenny Omega, Hangman Page, FTR, and The Young Bucks will face Mr. Brodie Lee, Colt Cabana, Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, Five and Ten of the Dark Order
  • Best Friends vs. Santana and Ortiz
  • A debate between Chris Jericho and Orange Cassidy with a special guest moderator (which has already been revealed online)

AEW Dark results: Jurassic Express vs. Strong Hearts six-man tag

The Big News: Jurassic Express won their second match in a row in 2020 to prepare them for their Dynamite match Wednesday with The Inner Circle.

***********************

The show started with Tony Schiavone and Dasha Gonzalez out and about to introduce the show and not in the usual arena setting. This week’s Dark is only 30 minutes long and I know they taped more matches than what was shown so we’ll see if those get aired next week, if ever.

***********************

Big Swole defeated Diamante

Taz was our Color Commentator of The Week and noted that Swole got a tattoo that said LL for Lauren Lee, a friend who she is paying tribute to in this match. Diamante was formerly with the Santana & Ortiz version of LAX in Impact and this is her debut in AEW. The two ladies reversed rollups to start the match with both trying to get quick wins. Diamante took her over with a side headlock, but Swole was able to wiggle her way out of it. Swole blocked several armdrag attempts and dropped her foe with a side kick.

Minutes later, Diamante set up for a suplex, but then decided to throw Swole down on the mat instead as hard as she could. She then hit a german suplex and a corner dropkick, but could only get a one count. Diamante grabbed flip flops from under the ring and used them briefly, but Swole put her in an abdominal stretch and spanked her after throwing the flip flops away.

Swole then picked up the win with Dirty Dancin’, which is a bit of a ripcord twisting forearm smash.

Jurassic Express defeated Strong Hearts (CIMA, El Lindaman, T-Hawk) in a six-man tag

There are weeks that Dark is unnecessarily long. Then there are weeks where they go 30 minutes, have two matches, and nothing else.

Excalibur said T-Hawk has the most vicious chops in wrestling, so Jungle Boy was the first to enjoy a plate of chops. Stunt tagged in and got backed down into the corner, but didn’t take any chops at first. Stunt and Lindaman looked good together. After Jungle Boy did a pair of suicide dives to CIMA and T-Hawk, Luchasaurus hoisted Stunt into the air and heaved him onto the duo.

In the biggest surprise since the sun went up and down today, they got the heat on Stunt. I know there is a lot of criticism about Stunt and even more criticism when people get too complimentary, but he takes an amazing beating. He did eventually make the hot tag to Luchasaurus. The first thing he did was give Lindaman a headbutt to the chest, which was hilarious since Luchasaurus had to duck about a foot in order to do it.

Jungle Boy tagged in and ran wild for a few minutes, but got cut off by CIMA and almost pinned by Lindaman. However, it was not a good day for the Strong Hearts as Jungle Boy pinned Lindaman after a double team back suplex/sit out power bomb.

Jurassic Express is on a winning streak!

***********************

Final Thoughts: It was a quick show and easy to watch. Both matches were enjoyable, but aren’t going to appear on anyone’s end of year ballots.
