WWE’s in no rush to make new top-level stars, and that’s a problem | Opinion

WWE right now reminds me a lot of when Bob Backlund returned to the company in 1992.

The company continually pushed that the former WWE Champion, 43, was a grizzled veteran and was nearing the end of his career. Heel announcers like Jerry Lawler and Bobby Heenan would constantly berate him for being over the hill. Even when he turned heel and had his memorable run with Bret Hart, a lot of the emphasis was on him being a former world champion ten years prior, a relic from the past angry at the “new generation” of WWE talent.

How much have things changed since 1992? I present to you a chart showing every top male WWE star, and a few that you could argue are just slightly under top level status:

WrestlerAge
Roman Reigns41
CM Punk47
Brock Lesnar48
Seth Rollins40
Cody Rhodes40
Gunther38
LA Knight43
Damian Priest43
Randy Orton46
Drew McIntyre41
Jey Uso40

The average age here is 42.45. In other words, today’s WWE main event scene features a whole bunch of Bob Backlunds.

I can’t remember a time where every big star just feels so…old. Not in terms of in-ring, as everyone listed above is good to great. No one embarrasses themselves, and the top matches are usually good. But on the flipside, I’ve seen Brock Lesnar do the same thing for 14 years. I’ve seen Randy Orton on top. I’ve seen Seth Rollins, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns headline big events for well over a decade now. Key point here? I’ve seen it.

The way WWE structures itself right now makes it hard for anyone over 30 to truly break out and become top level stars. Many wrestlers get featured, some get to headline, but it seems like WWE is far more interested in creating a system where people have to “earn” their spots. They can “get the rub” by getting laid out by The Undertaker. They can be in the same ring as The Rock and get berated, but the chances of a young star getting what is most important — a decisive win over an established star — often feels remote at times.

To their credit, WWE has been pushing hard the likes of Trick Williams, Oba Femi, and Bron Breakker over the last few months. But even then, they aren’t at the very top. Femi defeated Lesnar at WrestleMania in a quick, convincing match, only to lose just as quickly one month later at Clash in Italy. Breakker got a decisive victory over Rollins at Backlash, but then lost to him this past Monday on Raw. Granted, both were protected on those losses, and one loss isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. But you know what protects them even more? Winning. All the time.

All of this is illustrated more as WWE begins to plant the seeds for SummerSlam. After Roman Reigns defeated Jacob Fatu for the second time at Clash in Italy, he locked eyes with Solo Sikoa, hinting a future feud between the two after spending much of 2024 at each other’s throats. Meanwhile it’s been rumored that Rollins could emerge as the winner of the King of the Ring tournament, setting him up for a match against Reigns. I don’t think I really care too much about revisiting their feud again. The Shield broke up twelve years ago. Can we move on?

One can argue that WWE is doing so well right now they don’t need to change anything. And WWE has such a giant advantage over every other wrestling promotion in the world, there’s no real rush to do anything. But eventually, the wrestlers listed above are going to age out, and the best time to start pushing in a new era of wrestlers is now, while the company is hot. Otherwise, by the time new stars are made, they’re already in their 30s, and soon the cycle will repeat itself. WWE needs to be more pragmatic about who can be a top star before it eventually comes back to haunt them.

Seth Rollins calls Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship claims ‘complete bullsh*t’

Seth Rollins did not hold back when discussing Roman Reigns’ claims about elevating the status of the World Heavyweight Championship.

In an interview with Big Nick Turturro on Delivering Happiness Rollins hyped his unfinished rivalry with Reigns and his shortened World Heavyweight Championship reign.

“So, now Roman Reigns is walking around with my title, right? Talking about how he made the title relevant, which is bullsh*t. I’ll just say it. It’s complete bullsh*t. He knows it. I know it. Everybody else knows it. He sounds like an idiot when he says it.”

He also discussed the formula that worked and currently works with top WWE stars

“I think one of the things that’s really underrated in top talent and you kind of look at it through the history is there’s a level, there’s an intelligence that exists. There’s an understanding of people and how to read people, how to read a room, and how to kind of manipulate that reaction and that  feeling.”

“You look at guys from all different eras and they have it and they may not be traditionally the smartest guys in the world, like, you know, math scientists type things, right? Like Dusty Roads was incredible at it, the American Dream. You look at Ric Flair, you look at Bruno Sammartino, you look at Stone Cold Steve Austin, you look at The Rock, you look at all these generations, Triple H, these guys, John Cena, myself, Roman Reigns, the common denominator, aside from the desire for greatness, there’s a hunger to be at a level above other people, right? There’s an intelligence. There’s a knowhow with a way to get people to do what you want them to do.”

“And I don’t mean that in a negative manipulative way. I’m not trying to trick you or anything like that, but I understand what you want and what you don’t want and how to make those things work in conjunction with each other in the context of a story. And I think that’s the big thing that really, I think separates kind of that upper level from like the elite.”

Rollins was forced to vacate the World Title in October 2025 due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. He was the inaugural winner of the championship when it was re-introduced in 2023, and has had two reigns with it.

Following his injury, CM Punk won the championship in his absence at SNME in November. At WrestleMania, Reigns defeated him for the title at the Night 2 main event.

Following his injury, CM Punk won the championship in his absence at SNME in November. At WrestleMania, Reigns defeated Punk for the title in the Night Two main event.

Two matches announced for WWE Raw next week

A pair of tournament matches have been made official for WWE Raw next week.

The June 8 episode of Raw is set to be held in Paris, France at Accor Arena. WWE has announced that King & Queen of the Ring will continue to play out with first-round matches in each tournament. On the men’s side, it will be Seth Rollins vs. Je’Von Evans vs. Talla Tonga vs. Ricky Saints. The women’s bout is Liv Morgan vs. Becky Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Chelsea Green.

Both tournaments kicked off today with Oba Femi and IYO SKY becoming the first participants to advance to the semifinals. The remaining first round and semifinal matches will take place on Raw and SmackDown in advance of the June 27 finals at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.

At stake in the tournament are World title shots at SummerSlam. Though Morgan is already the Women’s World Champion on Raw, her explanation for still participating in Queen of the Ring is that she wants to take everything she can.

Next week’s Raw, like today’s episode from Turin, has a special start time of 2 p.m. Eastern. It’s airing live on Netflix during WWE’s ongoing European tour.

WWE reveals main event for Raw’s Clash in Italy fallout episode

A grudge match is set to headline Monday’s Clash in Italy fallout edition of WWE Raw.

WWE is back at Inalpi Arena in Turin for Raw today. The show has a special afternoon start time for viewers in the United States, airing live at 2 p.m. Eastern time on Netflix. Adam Pearce, the general manager of Raw, posted a video running down the lineup for the show and revealed that Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker will be the main event.

Rollins vs. Breakker is a rematch from Backlash, where Breakker picked up what WWE called the biggest win of his career so far. The former faction mates have been feuding since Breakker kicked Rollins out of The Vision last October, though both Rollins and Breakker have spent some time out of action due to injuries since then.

An Acknowledgement Ceremony for Roman Reigns following his Clash in Italy victory over Jacob Fatu is also set for Raw. Plus, the King & Queen of the Ring tournaments begin, and there will be a tag team match pitting Rey Mysterio & Dragon Lee against Ethan Page & Rusev.

WWE Raw (Monday, June 1) —

  • Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker
  • Will Jacob Fatu acknowledge World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns during Acknowledgement Ceremony?
  • King of the Ring tournament begins with Penta vs. Oba Femi vs. Solo Sikoa vs. Carmelo Hayes
  • Queen of the Ring tournament begins
  • Rey Mysterio & Dragon Lee vs. Ethan Page & Rusev

Seth Rollins has revealed the brain behind the SummerSlam 2025’s crutch drop moment

Seth Rollins has given Bobby Roode the due credit for his iconic WWE SummerSlam 2025 crutch drop.

Last year, during his match against LA Knight at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Seth Rollins seemingly suffered a knee injury. However, it turned out to be a ruse when Rollins fooled WWE superstars and fans and returned at SummerSlam 2025.

Recently, speaking to ESPN’s Highlights with Omar, Rollins opened up about that occasion and the viral crutch drop moment.

None of this was rehearsed. Talked about it briefly. I can’t take all the credit for the crutch tossing. It was…I’ll take all the credit when it’s my idea. The idea for the crutch drop was actually a Bobby Roode idea, who’s one of the incredible performers in our industry, or was and now is a great producer backstage,” Rollins said. “Honestly, this came off smoother than I expected. The crutch drop, even the jacket, the handoff for the briefcase was smooth.

Following CM Punk’s World title victory over Gunther at SummerSlam, Rollins entered the arena using his crutches before dropping them and marching down the ring. The 39-year-old then cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and won the title from Punk.

Seth Rollins feels he & fans get bored of him as a babyface

Seth Rollins recently opened up about his character work in WWE, saying he gets bored working as a babyface.

Recently speaking in an ESPN interview on Highlights with Omar, Rollins shared in detail why he prefers playing a heel character in WWE.

“The truth is, I’m not very good at being the hero. I can do it in short spurts, but I’m not like John Cena, I’m not like Rey Mysterio. I get bored of myself, and I think people get bored of me. I much prefer being a bad guy. I think it suits me better. Most of my favorite moments are being a piece of trash.”

Since returning from injury earlier this year, Rollins has continued to play a babyface character on WWE television. The former World Champion turned heel last year at WWE WrestleMania 42, when he joined forces with Paul Heyman and later formed the stable, The Vision, with Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed.

Seth Rollins’ character evolution in WWE

Over the years, Rollins has undergone many character/gimmick changes as well as multiple babyface-heel turns. In the same interview, he also addressed his evolution in WWE.

My relationship with the audience and equity that I have has really allowed me to soak in moments a lot more,” Rollins said. “I think when you’re younger and you’re building that equity, your timing is a little bit different, you’re in a rush, you’re a bit in a hurry, you don’t really get to take these moments in as much, you don’t really get to fully experience them.

I only remember that moment (the heist of the century) in third person. I don’t remember the feeling of running down the ramp. I don’t remember the cash-in itself, I don’t have any first person experience of that. I’ve seen the replays so many times that that’s how I remember things. Whereas later in my career, the WrestleMania (41) moment from the triple threat, or the CM Punk cash-in (at WWE SummerSlam 2025), I remember all of that.

Rollins is currently in a feud against Bron Breakker of The Vision, against whom he suffered a loss at Backlash 2026.

John Cena visits Seth Rollins’ Black & Brave Wrestling Academy

Retired WWE veteran John Cena recently visited Seth Rollins’ Black & Brave Wrestling Academy for a guest coaching session.

17-time World Champion Cena was recently at Davenport, Iowa, at Rollins’ wrestling academy, teaching and coaching budding wrestlers at the academy.

Black & Brave Wrestling Academy recently shared a status on social media talking about Cena’s coaching session. Talking about his time there, Rollins’ academy displayed its gratitude to Cena.

We were honored to welcome the incomparable [John Cena] to the Black and Brave Wrestling Academy today! John spent 5 hours teaching, coaching, and answering questions and then spent an additional hour giving 1-on-1 time to many of our graduates. We cannot thank him enough for his incredible generosity,” the post read.

Is John Cena still wrestling in WWE?

Cena, 49, is currently done with wrestling. Last year at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025, Gunther made Cena tap out and retired him from in-ring action. Since then, the veteran has stayed out of the squared circle.

Currently working as an ambassador for WWE, Cena recently appeared at the 2026 Backlash PLE to announce the John Cena Classic

Three matches that must be added to WWE Clash in Italy | Column

WWE seems to be pulling out all the stops for next weekend’s Clash in Italy on May 31, marking their debut PLE in Turin.

Three matches are already confirmed: Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther for the undisputed WWE Championship, Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu for the World Heavyweight title under Tribal Combat rules, and Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi in a rematch no one saw coming.

With tonight’s WWE SmackDown and just over a week to go before the show, here’s a few bouts worth adding to the card in the next few days.

LA Knight vs. Seth Rollins

Knight returned to Raw recently for the first time after WrestleMania and questioned The Usos’ actions with they and Roman Reigns going back to their former Bloodline antics. He talked about their united front against The Vision last month which seems to bear no consequences now.

He later met Rollins backstage and expressed no pity for his situation with The Vision, joining The Street Profits who made their intentions clear following their comeback to target Logan Paul and Austin Theory, informing Rollins it had nothing to do with him, but instead their focus was on the World Tag Team Titles.

Bron Breakker and Rollins’ rivalry is still alive, but a rematch at this point would be repetitive.

Rollins and Knight clashed in the second half of 2025 which ultimately led to their SNME bout in July where Rollins pretended to sustain a knee injury, later revealed to be a ruse to get back at CM Punk in a big way.

Since their rivalry never reached a conclusive ending, a match at Clash in Italy would put Knight as a potential upper card threat on the roster.

Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair for the WWE Women’s Championship

They were forced to set aside their differences on SmackDown to deal with a common enemy in Fatal Influence. Alexa Bliss, Flair and Ripley will also team up against Jade Cargill, B-Fab and Michin at SNME this weekend.

Ripley and Flair’s history dates back to 2020. Flair won the Royal Rumble that year and challenged for Ripley’s NXT Women’s Championship at WrestleMania. They have crossed paths in the ring multiple times since then.

Meanwhile, Ripley transitioned from the face of NXT to the main roster as a fan favorite. She was destined to be a top star in the women’s division which clashed with Flair’s standing. At WWE Survivor Series: WarGames last year, Flair was reluctant to trust Ripley and fight alongside her.

Reviving their feud one more time for Clash in Italy would set the tone for Flair’s return to singles competition and a desire to regain the WWE Women’s Championship. After all, Ripley and Flair’s feud evolved and segued into other storylines. Ultimately, circling back to collide for an International PLE could reinforce their positioning as top stars.

Carmelo Hayes vs. Trick Williams for the United States title

Sami Zayn has run out of opportunities to win back the United States Championship, and his short-lived reign before WrestleMania is already forgettable.

Fans have been rallying behind Hayes during his main roster stint and more so when he was US Champion. Williams is thriving on the SmackDown roster, carrying the charisma and crowd connection with every appearance.

Williams and Hayes had a chaotic and enriched history on NXT filled with friendship and betrayal, long before they became noteworthy contenders on the main roster. Running back their rivalry at Clash in Italy would make sense and could boost the United States title scene, strengthening it to more than just a title for open challenges and short title reigns.

Show Recap —

COUNTDOWN SHOW

Wrestlers were shown arriving. Triple H was shown, too, and he was booed by fans outside the arena watching the pre-show. Everyone else was cheered.

Michael Cole, Big E, Corey Graves and Peter Rosenberg hosted the first portion of the pre-show. I believe this would be Big E’s first live appearance since the departures of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.

There was a sit-down interview with Seth Rollins. They were open about Rollins turning 40 soon, and he acknowledged he may not be doing this much longer.

Fans chanted, “New Day rocks” as Big E talked about Rollins. He ignored it.

Jacob Fatu cut a backstage promo. He said he would kick Roman Reigns’ ass. Cole demonstrated the Tongan Death Grip on Rosenberg, who passed out. Rosenberg was pretending, unfortunately.

Cathy Kelley interviewed Sami Zayn. He calmly stated that he didn’t appreciate people, including Kelley, disrespecting him, and it was Trick Williams who enabled them to do so. Zayn planned on winning the US title back.

Because Backlash is held in Tampa, there was an FCW video package, which included interview clips of Bayley, Charlotte Flair, Rollins, Big E, and Sheamus. They also credited Dusty Rhodes, particularly when it came to wrestlers learning promos. Triple H was credited with transforming the old FCW into the new, shiny Performance Center.

The Usos showed up to the panel to continue the FCW discussions. The fans were excited to see Jimmy and Jey. They also spoke briefly about tonight’s world title match.

The Miz and Kit Wilson told Kelley that they would get rid of Danhausen tonight. Byron Saxton interviewed Danhausen and asked for a hint about his partner. Danhausen warned him not to ask that question again, or else he’d be cursed.

They counted down the top ten Roman Reigns title defences. Not included in that list was Reigns beating both Edge and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37.

Sonya Bryson-Kirksey sang the American national anthem.

BACKLASH 2026 RESULTS

Wrestlers arrived, the show intro aired, fireworks exploded in Tampa, and it’s time for the opening match. Michael Cole and Wade Barrett are tonight’s announcers. They didn’t waste time getting going, as the opening match began at 6:07 pm local time.

On the pre-show, they mentioned repeatedly that Seth Rollins was on the verge of turning 40, and he acknowledged that he wouldn’t be doing this forever. Bron Breakker, obviously, is a guy looking to take his place. Barrett said that seems to be the theme tonight (along with Jacob Fatu/Roman Reigns and Trick Williams/Sami Zayn).

Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker (w/ Paul Heyman)

They battled back and forth and fought around ringside, but Breakker cut Rollins off in the ring with a suplex and took over. The crowd was really behind Rollins.

Breakker cut him off again by hitting a running shoulder tackle and multiple German suplexes. (With Brock Lesnar gone, at least for now, I wonder if Heyman suggested that Breakker start using this move more.)

Rollins bit Breakker’s face out of desperation while on the top rope, but it wasn’t enough because Breakker hit a Frankensteiner anyway for two. With Rollins outside the ring, Breakker tried a running sneak attack, but Rollins superkicked him out of mid-air.

Rollins hit a clothesline back in the ring for two. Rollins set up for a curb stomp, but Breakker got up to his knees, so Rollins hit a knee strike instead for two. (Rollins seemed to say something to Breakker as he made the cover, so I’m not sure if this spot got screwed up, but it looked fine.)

Rollins went for the stomp, but Breakker blocked it by simply catching his foot. Breakker hit a press slam gutbuster and went for a spear, but Rollins kicked him to block it.

Rollins tried a tilt-a-whirl into a DDT or a Pedigree attempt, but he slipped and fell down by accident. It seemed like they couldn’t get on the same page on the spot, but Breakker made up for it by immediately hitting a standing moonsault for two.

Rollins responded with a buckle bomb, but Breakker popped right back with a clothesline. The crowd chanted, “This is awesome.” Rollins wound up outside the ring, leaning against the announce table, so Breakker hit a flying clothesline off the apron.

Breakker went to the top rope, but Rollins met him there and hit a superplex. Rollins tried to transition into the Falcon Arrow, but Breakker hit the Falcon Arrow instead for a nearfall. (The crowd popped big for that.)

Breakker hit another Frankensteiner moments later. He tried another, but Rollins landed on his feet and fired up as Breakker looked on in disbelief. Rollins hit a superkick and a Pedigree.

Rollins followed with a curb stomp, but Heyman went on the apron to distract the referee. Rollins smiled and grabbed a steel chair, realizing what was coming.

Austin Theory and Logan Paul tried a sneak attack, but Rollins attacked them with the chair. He gave Theory a curb stomp and chased Paul to the back.

Rollins sprinted back into the ring but was met with a Breakker spear for a nearfall. Breakker went for another spear, but Rollins countered it into a Pedigree (which didn’t look great).

Rollins went for a stomp off the ropes, but Breakker speared him out of the air. Breakker followed with another spear for the pinfall win.

— Cole called this the biggest win of Breakker’s career and stated, “Bron Breakker has arrived.”

Match result: Bron Breakker defeated Seth Rollins (21:25)

This was a strong match despite some miscommunication in the middle, and it helped that the crowd was hot for the whole thing. It was nice to see Breakker go over; I was expecting Rollins to win after weeks of Breakker getting the better of him. Rollins has a bit of an out after the Vision got involved, so this isn’t over.

********

Cathy Kelley interviewed Trick Williams in Gorilla. He said he was the puppetmaster, and this was his world. The time for games was over, and Sami Zayn would find that out tonight.

United States Championship match: Trick Williams (c) (w/ Lil Yachty) vs. Sami Zayn

Williams booted Zayn in the corner to the cadence of “Whoop that Trick.” Zayn rolled to the outside to recover and chucked Williams into the steel steps when he joined him. Zayn was about to use the steel steps as a weapon, but stopped when Lil Yachty got in the way.

Zayn hammered away at Williams in the ring. Fans booed this, and Zayn smirked while looking around in confusion. A few fans chanted for Zayn, but they were drowned out by chants of “Sami sucks,” and Zayn looked around at them again.

Williams fought back with an upkick and neckbreaker. They traded counters until Williams hit a Book End for two. Zayn responded later with a sunset flip powerbomb off the ropes for two. They traded counters again, but this time Zayn got the better of it and hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for two.

Zayn feigned a knee injury after springboarding off the ropes. Williams waited a moment before going after him, and Zayn caught him in a small package for two. Lil Yachty argued with the referee, and the distraction allowed Zayn to hit Williams with a candy cane kendo stick for a nearfall.

Zayn aggressively booted Williams until the referee stopped him for some reason. As the ref checked on Williams, Lil Yachty hit Zayn with the kendo stick, and Williams followed with a Trick Kick for a nearfall.

They wound up outside, and Zayn decked Yachty with a right hand. Yachty went down like a man who’s never taken a bump in his life (not an insult). Zayn also hit him with a kendo stick.

Williams went after Zayn, but Zayn gave him a DDT onto the top of the steep steps. Before entering the ring, Zayn gave an unsuspecting Lil Yachty a Helluva Kick into the barricade. (I laughed, especially when Lil Yachty went down awkwardly again.)

Back in the ring, Zayn went for a Helluva Kick, but Williams dodged it and hit a Trick Shot for the pinfall win.

— Lil Yachty quickly recovered from Zayn’s finisher and joined Williams in the ring to celebrate. He tossed cash into the air.

Match result: Trick Williams defeated Sami Zayn to retain the United States Championship (12:45)

This match was alright. They worked around Williams’ limitations as best they could. The crowd liked Williams, and they resented Zayn.

Zayn has lost two in a row to Williams, so he’ll have to find something else to do now.

********

The Miz and Kit Wilson entered first, and there was a long video package to explain why this match was happening.

Danhausen entered on his custom vehicle and walked over to the cloning machine box to reveal his partner. The box opened, and a little person dressed as Danhausen popped out. They entered the Danhausen-mobile and rode around ringside. They entered the ring, and Miz laughed at Danhausen’s partner.

The crowd seemed to play along during the entrance, but there was a smattering of boos when the bell rang and the match actually started with this man as Danhausen’s partner.

Danhausen & Mini-hausen vs. The Miz & Kit Wilson

The Danhausen clone could actually wrestle and used a tilt-a-whirl leg scissors takedown to knock Miz out of the ring. This cheered up the paying audience.

The heels took control after posting Danhausen. They beat up little Danhausen for a while until he hit a springboard moonsault to knock down Wilson. Danhausen made a hot tag and ran wild on both guys, and his offence included a German suplex on Wilson and a tornado DDT on Miz.

Danhausen hit a running boot on Wilson, but he wasn’t the legal man. Miz booted Danhausen into the corner, so little Danhausen tagged himself in and wiped out both heels with a suicide dive. Mini-hausen chased Wilson up the ramp, but Wilson kicked him in the head and shoved him back into the box.

The cloning box percolated and reopened, and about five or six more little Danhausens entered. The original clone gave Wilson an airplane spin. He tried to curse Wilson, but Wilson held up a mirror, so Mini-hausen wound up cursing himself. Miz gave him a Skull Crushing Finale, but Danhausen broke up the cover.

Danhausen tagged in and gave Miz a Thesz press (at least he tried to). Miz tried to use a fire extinguisher, but he was cursed, I guess, and it went off in his face and in his partner’s.

Mini-hausen wiped out Wilson with a dive, and Danhausen hit Miz with a pump kick for the pinfall.

— Cole said, “This is wrestling!” and Barrett vehemently disagreed, asking, “What happened to the business I love?”

Match result: Danhausen & Mini-hausen defeated The Miz & Kit Wilson (11:38)

This nonsense match was longer than every women’s match on both nights of WrestleMania 42.

********

They announced a two-night AAA Triplemanía in September (over two non-consecutive nights).

There was a commercial for Riyadh season.

IYO SKY vs. Asuka

Kairi Sane did not appear. The post-match could leave people speculating on Asuka’s future.

The match started with chants of, “We want Kairi.” It wasn’t super loud at first, but it got much louder as Asuka controlled the opening moments of the match.

Sky fired up with some offence, which got the crowd to focus on the match instead. Asuka took control after driving Sky’s head into the ring post. The crowd chanted for Sky to get back into the match before once again chanting for Kairi Sane. (The chants pretty much stopped after this.)

Asuka hit kicks to the chest until Sky blocked one and hit a double foot stomp. Sky followed with a back elbow, an uppercut, a missile dropkick, and a running meteora in the corner for two. Asuka responded with strikes of her own and a knee strike for two.

Sky hit a German suplex into a bridging cover for two. Asuka tried an armbar, but Sky quickly escaped. They traded kicks, and both women went down. Asuka tried an armbar again, but Sky slipped out and applied her own version of the Asuka Lock until Asuka got a rope break.

Asuka went to the top, but Sky hit an uppercut and hurricanrana. However, Asuka rolled through into a cradle for a nearfall. Sky avoided a running hip attack and dropkicked Asuka out of the ring. Asuka blocked a dive and placed Sky on the announce table.

While standing on the announce table, Asuka tried to mist Sky, but Sky held up Barrett’s laptop to block it. Sky tripped Asuka and hit a flying crossbody off the table. The crowd chanted for Sky as she hit an Asai moonsault.

Asuka dodged a moonsault and locked in the armbar. Sky countered it, but Asuka caught her in the Asuka Lock. It looked like Sky was about to pass out, but she just barely caught Asuka in a cradle for two.

Asuka blocked a kick and hit a German suplex. However, Sky blocked a kick moments later and hit a German suplex of her own. Sky followed with a running corner meteora and a moonsault for the pinfall win.

— Sky bowed to Asuka after the match. Asuka broke down in tears and gave Sky a big hug. They embraced and Asuka held up Sky’s hand.

That’s interesting.

Match result: IYO SKY defeated Asuka (18:06)

A really good match that built as it went.

********

Steve Keirn and Dan Spivey were in the crowd, along with members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have some extra time on their hands.

John Cena’s announcement

Cena entered. He said he had to consider what the next stage of his career would be. The crowd chanted, “One more match,” and Cena said he knew that was coming. He thought a lot about his final match and how it went.

Cena was happy with it and happy with the event being a showcase of the future. He wanted his final opponent to earn the spot, and that’s what happened.

That night gave a spotlight to some of the new NXT stars like Sol Ruca, Je’Von Evans, and Oba Femi. (Femi got a big reaction.) Cena was impressed with Femi and his win over Brock Lesnar.

Cena was so happy with how that night went that it led to his announcement tonight: the John Cena Classic.

Over one evening, the best of today would face the best of tomorrow. Members of WWE and NXT would battle for the chance to win a new championship. The championship would have Cena’s name on it, and he would strive to make the event a memorable one.

Cena also announced that fans would vote to determine the champion. During this showcase event, even if a wrestler didn’t win their match, they could win over the fans with their performance, and that wrestler could still be voted by the fans to become the new champion.

Cena was excited and wanted to make this an annual event. He thanked the company for making this happen and thanked the fans for their support.

(To summarize, there will be an event with matches where the actual results don’t matter, only the individual performances, because a fan vote will determine the winner. At least, the results will matter as much as the fans determine they do. It doesn’t really sound like a title that will be defended; rather, an annual trophy like the Andre the Giant battle royal, but we’ll see. The live fans cheered the pandering announcement. It certainly different.)

********

World Heavyweight Championship match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu

Reigns knocked down Fatu with a shoulder tackle and posed to the crowd, but Fatu immediately got to his feet and stared down Reigns. Fatu no-sold a clothesline and knocked Reigns out of the ring. Fatu went for a dive, but when it seemed like Reigns blocked it, Fatu applied the Tongan Death Grip instead.

Fatu let go of the hold because they were outside the ring. When Fatu went after him again, Reigns wrenched him against the ropes. Reigns drove Fatu’s hand into the ring post to prevent him from doing the move again. There were loud duelling crowd chants.

Reigns hit clotheslines in the corner, but Fatu stopped it by simply grabbing Reigns’ arm. Fatu hit a clothesline and drove Reigns shoulder-first into the ring post. Fatu missed a corner splash, and Reigns came back with more clotheslines and a big boot.

Reigns hit a Superman punch, but Fatu kicked out at one and popped right to his feet. Fans chanted for Fatu, who no-sold Reigns’ offence before hitting a clothesline and a senton. Fatu headbutted Reigns ten times in the corner and hit a running hip attack.

Fatu set up for another hip attack, but Reigns exploded out of the corner with a Superman punch for two. They went to the outside, where Fatu powerbombed Reigns through the announce table. Fatu rolled Reigns back into the ring, but Reigns speared him for a nearfall.

Reigns went for another spear, but Fatu countered into a pop-up Samoan drop. The crowd went crazy as Fatu followed with the Mighty Moonsault, but Reigns kicked out.

Fatu went for a senton bomb, but Reigns got his knees up to block it. They slowly got to their feet and traded right hands. Fatu got the better of the exchange as Reigns fell into the corner. Fatu immediately hit consecutive running hip attacks.

Fatu applied the Tongan Death Grip. Reigns appeared to be going out, but he fired up and put his fingers in Fatu’s eyes. Reigns shoved Fatu into the corner as he did, and the referee was knocked down (he was only dazed, not knocked out).

Fatu tried a pop-up Samoan Drop, but Reigns countered with a Superman punch, and he followed with a spear for a close nearfall. (This was one of those nearfalls that was probably a three, but it wasn’t the finish, so the ref held up the count.)

Fatu applied the Death Grip, and Reigns held onto the top turnbuckle for leverage. The buckle cover came off in the process. Fatu still held the Death Grip, but Reigns shoved his head into the exposed buckle and followed with a spear for the pinfall win. Reigns retains.

— Fatu attacked Reigns after the match and put him in the Death Grip. The ref tried to stop him, so Fatu gave him a Samoan drop.

Officials ran out to stop Fatu, but he superkicked Shane Helms and shoved Adam Pearce out of the ring. Fatu put Reigns in the hold again as five officials desperately tried to stop him, and he eventually let go.

Fatu left the ring, but he returned to put Reigns in the hold again. Fatu let go of the hold and held the title belt up high as the show ended.

Match result: Roman Reigns defeated Jacob Fatu to retain the World Heavyweight Championship (18:03)

This was a really good match. On some level, we’ve probably seen a few too many Reigns main events, but Fatu comes across as totally unique from everyone else on this show, so this felt different, and he should really win the title at some point.

Seth Rollins thinks WWE celebrity involvement is best ‘in small doses’

Seth Rollins thinks celebrity involvement benefits WWE — as long as the company doesn’t go too far in overexposing the stars it’s featuring.

Ahead of Backlash, Rollins made an appearance on ESPN’s UnSportsmanlike and gave his thoughts on celebrities crossing over into pro wrestling. He praised Bad Bunny and IShowSpeed for how hard they’ve worked to prepare themselves for WWE matches. Featuring outside stars brings a new audience to WWE, but Rollins believes it’s best in small doses. He compared it to his own sports media pursuits. Rollins is comfortable giving his opinion on sports, but he wouldn’t fare well if he had to commentate an entire game.

“I don’t mind it. I think there’s a balance in our industry. Like, you don’t want me doing too much,” Rollins said. “You don’t want me in the booth doing too much. Like, I can’t be [sports broadcaster] Kevin Harlan. I’m not like that. I’m not Tom Brady. I don’t have that expertise, but a little bit here and there.

“And I think that’s the same for wrestling. There was a big pushback against Pat McAfee when he came in. And it’s like, yeah, he’s inserted in this WrestleMania main event storyline that already had 20 years of history with Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton. Our audience is like, ‘Ehh, maybe not.’ But when Pat was on commentary for us, he did a great job. He did a couple of matches here and there. He did one in NXT that was awesome. He worked with Gunther, they had a great match.

“And so it’s not like — it’s just in small doses. So Speed, Bad Bunny, small doses, great for our industry. And it allows us to kind of branch out and for different people and different audiences to see what we do.”

McAfee’s addition to the Rhodes vs. Orton WrestleMania 42 storyline drew significant criticism from fans, to the point that McAfee made the decision to opt out of the angle after WrestleMania instead of continuing on.

Rollins had especially high praise for Bad Bunny, comparing his star power to that of Michael Jackson’s.

“You don’t understand how big it is that Bad Bunny is wrestling in WWE. Bad Bunny is this generation’s Michael Jackson,” Rollins said.

“I mean, this guy is the most — he sells out concerts and stadiums globally. We’re talking like nearly hundreds of thousands of people at these shows, and he’s coming to wrestle for WWE and is so pumped about it and is psyched about it and is willing to like put in the work. He doesn’t just show up game day and be like, ‘You know, I can do this.’ He’s like, okay, give me a ring. I gotta train, send somebody down here.'”

Rollins is facing off against Bron Breakker in a grudge match at Backlash this Saturday. On UnSportsmanlike, Rollins described it as a teacher vs. trainee matchup between himself and his former understudy in The Vision. Rollins hyped that we’ll find out at Backlash if Breakker is truly ready to take the next step in his WWE career.

Seth Rollins explains motivation for The Vision’s formation ahead of WWE Backlash

Seth Rollins detailed his decision to choose Bron Breakker for The Vision and shares his mindset heading into their WWE Backlash match this weekend.

Speaking with Michael Cole, Rollins discussed varied aspects of his relationship with Breakker to promote their match this weekend. He talked about The Vision’s formation stemming from disdain for Roman Reigns and CM Punk, and preventing them from taking the leadership reins at WWE.

“Maybe a little bit of insecurity? I looked at the landscape and I was kind of starting to pile up enemies – CM Punk, Roman Reigns. When you have Roman Reigns you have the entire Bloodline. So, there was a lot of people who were sort of eyeballing what I was doing and what I was saying, they didn’t like it, so I felt like at that stage there were a lot of pardon the pun visions for what the future of the company could or would or should look like.”

“And to be honest with you, I just don’t trust Roman Reigns. I certainly don’t trust CM Punk, I don’t trust either of them to be the figureheads and the leaders, so I felt I was the best person suited for that job. I felt like I was in a unique position where I had to take care of those guys, but then I needed to insulate myself on the backside of that. And also, I wanted to not just do this for me, but to pass it on to the next generation, and for me Bron Breakker was the perfect fit for that.”

In October last year, The Vision led by Rollins crumbled as Breakker and Bronson Reed attacked him. Rollins was written off WWE TV due to a shoulder surgery and made his return shortly before WrestleMania 42. He faced Gunther at the Premium Live Event but Breakker returned from a hernia surgery and cost him the bout.

They confronted each other on the following editions of Raw that eventually led to their upcoming singles match at WWE Backlash on May 9.

Bron Breakker reveals World Championship plans after Seth Rollins feud at WWE Backlash

Bron Breakker has seemingly got his long term plans laid out. He is hopeful to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship after he’s done with Seth Rollins at Backlash.

In an interview with ESPN, Breakker revealed that his match against Rollins is the final stop before pursuing the World Heavyweight Championship. He dwelled on history with Rollins in The Vision before things turned awry.

“I think this means everything, especially for me getting back in the World Title picture. I think the first order of business is getting through Seth Rollins and sort of putting that story to bed because we have a lot of history. Obviously, Seth took me under his wing a little bit over a year ago after WrestleMania to sort of groom me as ‘the next big thing in WWE.’ But things things went a little astray along the way cause I just just had this feeling at some point or another Seth was going to either turn his back on me or pull the rug on me as soon as that things maybe didn’t start going his way or along with his vision that he saw the group going so I just beat him to it really.”

Breakker also discussed how using the spear in wrestling feels natural to him given his football background.

“I think it just stems back from my football career. I was a defensive guy for the majority of my career. I played linebacker. I played sort of like a hybrid safety linebacker kind of guy that could play in the box and guy that could play in space with skilled players. And I feel like I’ve just been doing this spear my entire life. It’s second nature to me and it’s pretty cool that I can bring that experience from football and translate that over to wrestling.”

Breakker initiated the attack on Rollins in October 2025, which laid the foundation for their ongoing rivalry. At WrestleMania 42, Breakker returned after a few months away due to hernia surgery and cost Rollins his match against Gunther.

In the week that followed, Rollins confronted Breakker who claimed he never needed him, and mocked him. This ultimately led to Rollins issuing a challenge for WWE Backlash on May 9.

NFL Network host got threats from fans after worked Seth Rollins segment

NFL Network host Kyle Brandt received online threats from fans after his on-air worked segment with Seth Rollins.

A few days ago, ahead of the NFL Draft, Seth Rollins appeared on “Good Morning Football.” However, he soon got into a heated argument with co-host Brandt, which led to Rollins leaving the set. This was later revealed to be a work.

Speaking to Jimmy Traina of the SI Media pod, Brandt explained the entire scenario. “I’ve worked with Seth [Rollins] for over a year and consider him a friend in the industry. Love him. Loved him before I met him. I knew it was going to be he and I at the Draft, just alone at the desk. It’s me and a pro wrestler at the Draft. We have to bring something better than ‘Where is Sonny Styles going to land on Thursday?’ We have to put on some kind of show,” he said.

“I like the old WWF. I like the heels. I text Seth, ‘Can we do a work? I’ve always wanted to do that. It’s a fantasy of mine.’ He goes, ‘Yeah, do you have an idea?’ Seth is up for anything. I started piecing it together and saw we were going to be talking about [Aaron] Rodgers. Seth famously hates Rodgers. There was this question about Seth doing WrestleMania, where he’s almost 40, and Rodgers playing this year, and he’s 42, which one is more difficult? I was like, ‘This is it.’ Seth and I are texting, and I’m like, ‘I’ll push you. I think you should walk off.’ ‘Great.’ We tell very few people. We told the producer of Good Morning Football so he doesn’t hit a panic button, and I texted a few bosses, a boss at ESPN, a new boss, and a boss at NFL Network. Seth let a few people know,” Brandt added.

Brandt recalled how he kept poking Rollins until he snapped. The 47-year-old revealed that he was ready for a fight with Rollins. Brandt also opened up about how, after Rollins left the set, people there became clueless about his location. However, while the segment became a talking point on the internet, it also attracted severe hate toward Brandt.

Over the next 24 hours, it was very strange. I don’t regret it at all, but I didn’t think I was going to be that much of a heel. I thought it was going to go ‘Seth and Kyle have a fight. Seth leaves.’ It was, ‘Kyle bullies Seth off the set and goes way below the belt and insults him until he leaves. Kyle is a prick.’ It was everyone. The wrestling fans went nuts. I had many threats of physical violence in my mentions,” he continued.

“All that stuff, which now I can laugh about. I had industry people being like, ‘What was that? What did he do to you?’ There was disappointment in how rude I was to Seth. The problem was, we committed to 24 hours. The other funny thing is Seth and I had to go to some of the same engagements throughout that day, including the Draft. We couldn’t be around each other. I was even thinking, ‘Do I go and throw a drink in Seth’s face? Do we escalate it?’ We just left it where it was. The next day, we do the dramatic hug and that was it. It was one of the weirdest 24 hours of my career because everyone was so mad at me.”

Rollins, a Chicago Bears fan, has been appearing on Good Morning Football since March 2025.

First three matches announced for WWE Backlash

Three matches are now set for Backlash.

The main event segment of Monday’s Raw saw Roman Reigns come out and ask Jacob Fatu for his decision, hoping for Fatu to unite the family instead of trying to divide it. Fatu said he didn’t need a week, a day, an hour: he needed the title. Fatu said that he grinded for everything he did and never heard from Reigns or The Usos and it was Solo who contacted him and brought him to WWE.

As Reigns started with his reply, Fatu grew irate and attacked the tribal chief, applying the Tongan death grip. Once he was done Fatu started to leave, but Reigns recovered enough to tell his relative that he’ll see him at Backlash on May 9 in Tampa.

In addition, IYO SKY will face Asuka. SKY challenged Becky Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental title, but Asuka’s interference cost her the match. Later in a promo, Asuka said she wasn’t done with SKY, saying all she did was try and teach her former student but now nothing would stop her from destroying SKY. But she would teach her pupil one final lesson at Backlash: she is not and never will be ready for Asuka.

The opening segment of the show saw Seth Rollins come out and blame Bron Breakker for his loss at WrestleMania against Gunther. Breakker came out and the two exchanged words, with Rollins telling Breakker he “wasn’t ready.” Breakker said he was on his way to becoming a main eventer without Rollins and told the former World Champion that he was the very best at being number two.

Rollins issued the challenge for Backlash and left, but not before hurling one final insult, telling “Steiner” that he wasn’t even number two in his family.

WWE Backlash (May 9):

  • World Champion Roman Reigns defends against Jacob Fatu
  • Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker
  • IYO SKY vs. Asuka

Seth Rollins makes surprise appearance at final Berwyn Eagles Club show

The Berwyn Eagles Club is saying goodbye to professional wrestling, so Seth Rollins showed up in person so he could say goodbye to it.

The WWE star made a surprise appearance at Friday’s AAW Wrestling show, one of the last wrestling events at the building. Following an altercation between wrestlers and a fan at a show in March that included a fake stabbing, the building announced it will not be booking any future wrestling events

Rollins opened the show by coming out to his WWE music, but the crowd quickly acknowledged his past in the region, chanting his indie name of Tyler Black.

Rollins noted his emotional reaction as the crowd welcomed him home. He plugged his Black & Brave Wrestling Academy, located a few hours from the building, and noted some of his students were on the show. He said he needed to be there for the building’s last show because he loves professional wrestling.

He then thanked the fans for letting him live out his childhood dream, “not just at WrestleMania, but to wrestle in rings like this, in places like the Berwyn Eagles Club, for promotions like AAW, for promoters and human beings like Danny Daniels, and in front of fans like you, because you are just like me.”

He thanked the fans for supporting himself, AAW, and professional wrestling.

Cagematch lists Rollins with 36 matches in Berwyn Eagles Club from 2005 to 2010.

The last wrestling show in the building will be an indie lucha event on Sunday, April 26.
