AEW World Champion CM Punk undergoes successful lower leg surgery

AEW World Champion CM Punk has undergone successful lower leg surgery, according to the promotion.

AEW announced during this week’s Dynamite that Punk underwent an unspecified operation on his leg on Wednesday, and that the surgery was deemed a success.

Punk was injured last week and announced on last Friday’s Rampage that he would be out of action due to the injury. Punk made reference to “a couple of things” being broken and having a “broken wheel” during his Rampage promo, but the official diagnosis has not been made public.

Punk was not stripped of the AEW World title, and a tournament is underway to crown an interim World title holder, with the winner facing Punk for the title when he is able to return.

Kyle O’Reilly won a battle royal for the right to face Jon Moxley in a first round match in the tournament, a match that Moxley won. At Sunday’s NJPW Dominion show, Hiroshi Tanahashi will take on Hirooki Goto, with the winner set to face Moxley for the interim AEW World title at Forbidden Door on Sunday, June 26.
