JBL calls Chad Gable ‘best wrestler in the world’

Shockwaves from AAA’s mask vs. mask match between the Grande Americanos last weekend continue to reverberate throughout the wrestling world. And one of the announcers on the call that night says that match, and one participant in particular, represent the best that wrestling has to offer.

John “Bradshaw”Layfield was on the mic as El Grando Americano defeated Original Grande Americano on Saturday night in Monterrey, Mexico. The Original then unmasked and identified himself as Chad Gable.

JBL didn’t mince words when discussing the match in an appearance on Busted Open Radio

“I think Chad Gable’s the best wrestler in the world,” Layfield said. “And I don’t think it’s close. That was absolutely amazing, what he and [Ludwig] Kaiser did.”

Layfield was also impressed with how Gable changed his character to work in front of a new audience.

“It’s easy to be kind of a campy heel like he was in WWE with the videos with the Varsity Club or whatever the heck it was,” Layfield said, momentarily forgetting the name of the Alpha Academy. “But then all of a sudden to try to get heat down in Mexico, that’s different level. It’s not even the same business. He had a match down there with La Parka that was just phenomenal.”

JBL was also quick to praise Ludwig Kaiser, the man behind the El Grande Americano mask.

“Kaiser created all this,” he said. “Kaiser created all this with learning the language. Not just learning the language—as we used to say in Texas, he wasn’t learning Spanish, he was learning Mexican. The local dialect was what he was learning, which was absolutely amazing, what he’s done.”

Of course, the AAA fans themselves played a big part in the night’s success.

“Mexican fans are just passionate fans,” Layfield said. “They love their lucha libre, and they love their stars, and they get into things, and they enjoy it. And that’s what you saw, them at their very best. And I thought you saw wrestling at its very best. I was absolutely blown away by what they did in the match.”

WWE airing El Grande Americano mask vs. mask match on Netflix

WWE is hoping to get as many eyes as possible on the El Grande Americano mask vs. mask match from Lucha Libre AAA.

The rivalry between El Grande Americano (Ludwig Kaiser) and Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) culminated with Kaiser getting the victory at AAA Noche de Los Grandes this past Saturday. The match has become an instant classic, earning Kaiser and Gable praise from fans and their WWE peers. WWE management apparently thinks very highly of the match as well, with it being announced during Raw today (June 1) that, immediately after the episode ends, WWE will be airing an encore presentation of the mask vs. mask match on Netflix.

Kaiser vs. Gable originally aired on WWE’s YouTube channel, where AAA’s TV is broadcast for free every week for viewers outside of Mexico, Central America, and South America (except Brazil). AAA airs on Fox Mexico in those markets.

The Kaiser vs. Gable rivalry is likely to be in strong contention for 2026’s Feud of the Year in all of professional wrestling. Though Gable originally introduced the character, Kaiser assumed the Americano gimmick last year when Gable was forced out of action due to injury. The two started feuding after Gable returned, and Kaiser became a huge babyface in Mexico during the process.

Kaiser’s May arrest briefly put this mask vs. mask match in jeopardy, but the state of Florida did not object to his motion to continue traveling domestically and internationally while the battery case plays out. A pre-trial conference in the case, where the alleged victim is a male resident of Kaiser’s apartment complex, is scheduled for July 16.

AAA’s next major events —

Coming out of Noche de Los Grandes, AAA has Triplemania 34 — its biggest annual event — set to be held over two nights on September 11 and 13. Night one is set for Las Vegas, with night two being held in Mexico City.

AAA could potentially add another big show to its upcoming schedule with Verano de Escandalo 2026 rumored for July 25.

El Grande Americano mask vs. mask was wrestling at its best | Opinion

The mask vs. mask match at AAA Noche de los Grandes was as good as wrestling can get.

There just isn’t a place above what happened in Arena Monterrey on Saturday night.

Never mind the match itself being incredible. The presentation of it and the emotion swirling through the venue alone made this something to go out of your way to see.

The match mattered so much to every single person inside that building that anyone watching had to get swept away in it. It was beautiful.

Wrestling Fan of the Year spotted front row at AAA Noche de Los Grandes

There was one fan seated in the front row at Noche de los Grandes who best encapsulated the feeling from the crowd on Saturday night.

The original El Grande Americano, who would later shockingly be revealed to be Chad Gable, was making his ring entrance and walked past a fan holding an El Grande Americano mask. Ever the bad guy, Gable goes to rip the mask out of the fan’s hands, but the fan is having none of it. He clutched onto that mask like Ludwig Kaiser’s career as the character depended on it.

Then the fan got right up into Gable’s face and was ready to have his own Lucha de Apuestas with the man if that’s what needed to happen.

Then El Grande Americano — the Ludwig Kaiser version — makes his entrance for the match, and as he’s walking around ringside, he pauses right by where that fan was. Only now the fan is proudly wearing his El Grande Americano mask and is celebrating with his hero.

That fan might as well have been everybody in the arena last night.

What El Grande Americano represented in Mexico

Not being Mexican, I’ll never truly know the full extent of what Americano means to Mexican wrestling fans.

But I think fans from outside the country understand that this was Americano fighting for the pride of Mexico.

The other Americano was a fraud who didn’t even speak Spanish. Meanwhile, Ludwig Kaiser’s Americano has a Mexican girlfriend, speaks Spanish, and even defended the honor of Pimpinela Escarlata.

One of the best episodes of AAA on Fox that has taken place this year involved Pimpinela attempting to prove that Chad Gable’s Americano was a fraud, trying to prove that he doesn’t even speak Spanish.

This led to Pimpi asking how Gable wanted his quesadillas, either with cheese or without cheese.

Gable, not seeing the comedy in this, attacked poor Pimpi. Later, we’d see Ludwig’s Americano holding Pimpi’s hand and being urged to defend the honor of Mexico.

Americano was now defending Pimpinela and Mexico and, later, the honor of Andrea Bazarte as well, both in Mexico as well as in Orlando-area apartment complex elevators.

The whole storyline was that Americano had pride in Mexican culture, and Gable’s Americano didn’t. At least, not until after he unmasked. By the end, everyone felt that pride, including wrestling fans from around the world.

Chad Gable’s speech after unmasking

As much as this whole thing was a celebration of Americano and the connection that Americano has developed with the Mexican people, this was also Gable’s moment.

Gable’s speech after the match basically turned him into a hero in Mexico as well. He said he put on the mask to learn lucha libre so he could beat all the luchadors whom he hated. But through this process, he developed an appreciation for Mexican culture.

Gable vowed that he would be back in AAA.

And so, even the antagonist in this story, in the end, developed pride in Mexican culture. I don’t think it could have been done any better.

Pre-trial conference set in Ludwig Kaiser battery case

We now have a better idea of the potential timeline for Ludwig Kaiser’s legal case.

Court records show that a pre-trial conference is scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida on the morning of Thursday, July 16. This is where the prosecution and defense meet and attempt to determine whether the case is going to trial or if it will be resolved before then with a plea agreement. Though this could get pushed back or a trial could end up not happening at all, a trial period of August 10-28 is mentioned on the document.

Kaiser (Marcel Barthel), his lawyer, and the prosecution have been informed of the pre-trial conference date. Fellow WWE star Gunther (Walter Hahn), as the depositor of Kaiser’s $1,000 bond, was also informed.

In the case, Kaiser has entered a “not guilty” plea in response to the misdemeanor battery charge he’s facing. It concerns an April 24 incident where Kaiser is accused of assaulting a male resident of his apartment complex. The alleged victim says Kaiser and a female were aggressively kissing in an elevator — and Kaiser attacked him after the victim told Kaiser to “please have some manners.” Police observed a scratch and redness on the victim’s head after the attack.

Ludwig Kaiser is free to travel during the case —

After the state of Florida did not object to the motion, Kaiser is free to travel domestically and internationally while the case plays out. One of the biggest moments of his professional career is happening in Mexico this Saturday, where Kaiser (as El Grande Americano) will face off against Chad Gable (Original El Grande Americano) in a mask vs. mask match at AAA Noche de Los Grandes.

There is said to be no heat on Kaiser within WWE despite the situation.

Ludwig Kaiser reportedly has no heat within WWE for recent arrest

Just days after WWE’s Ludwig Kaiser’s recent arrest in Orange County, Florida, a new report has emerged regarding his status within the promotion.

Kaiser, real name Marcel Barthel, was arrested for misdemeanor battery over an April incident in Orlando. According to the charges, Kaiser attacked the game after being called out by him due to getting intimate with a woman. The arrest and charges led to speculation regarding his ongoing push as El Grande Americano in AAA.

Now, a new report from Fightful Select notes that Kaiser currently has no heat within WWE over the arrest. Fightful’s sources within WWE believe that Kaiser will eventually be dismissed based on the information they’ve received.

Also, according to Fightful’s sources, the recent story about Kaiser defending himself and Andrea Bazarte from ICE comments was planted within WWE. After the ICE story became public, Fightful Select reports that an “unfamiliar number reached out to several members of the wrestling media with the story, as opposed to Kaiser or Andrea themselves, or a member of WWE’s team.”

Regarding the talent’s response, some found the “defense” narrative surrounding the incident unbelievable and felt that the 35-year-old should have simply removed himself from the situation.

Scheduled to face OG El Grande Americano in a mask vs. mask match at AAA Noche de Los Grandes, Kaiser is expected not to face any issues while travelling, following the clearance he received from the judge.

Ludwig Kaiser granted permission to travel during legal case

Ludwig Kaiser is officially able to continue working while his legal case plays out.

A new court filing appeared on Tuesday showing that Orange County judge Andrew Cameron has granted Kaiser’s motion to travel throughout the United States and internationally. This was expected given that the state did not object to the motion, which allowed Kaiser (Marcel Barthel) to travel to Mexico last week and proceed with his WWE/AAA duties.

The judge’s ruling states that, though allowed to travel, Kaiser must appear in person for all future court dates. He must also abide by all previous conditions of his bond, like not being allowed to have any contact with the alleged victim, not consuming alcohol to the point of intoxication, and not using any drugs unless prescribed by a doctor:

Here is the judge’s full ruling:

  • This cause having come before me upon Defendant’s Motion for Travel, and the Court being fully advised in the premises, it is hereby ordered and adjudged:
  • 1. Mr. Barthel is permitted to travel throughout the United States and internationally during the pendency of this case.
  • 2. Mr. Barthel shall appear in person for all required future court dates.
  • 3. All other previous conditions of release remain in effect.

Ludwig Kaiser battery arrest —

Kaiser is facing a misdemeanor battery charge relating to an April incident involving a male resident of his Orlando, Florida apartment complex. Per the victim’s story of what happened, Kaiser and a female were aggressively kissing while the three were in an elevator. The victim claims he told them to “please have some manners,” which led to Kaiser attacking him outside of the elevator. Police observed a large scratch and redness on the victim’s head.

When Kaiser learned of a warrant for his arrest, he turned himself in on May 20. The state not objecting to his travel request meant that Kaiser was able to be back in Mexico by May 22. He has a big match coming up at AAA Noche de Los Grandes this Saturday, where El Grande Americano (Kaiser) will battle Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) with their masks on the line.

El Grande Americano Mexico City event back on after cancellation

Plans for El Grande Americano are moving forward with Ludwig Kaiser expected to be able to travel outside of the country.

Lucha Libre AAA’s “Serenade for El Grande Americano” event, originally scheduled for Wednesday before being canceled, is now back on and will take place tonight (May 22) in Mexico City. It’s a free event where fans can show their support for Kaiser/Americano ahead of his upcoming mask vs. mask match against Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable).

The serenade is being held at Kings League Dome and is limited to 300 fans.

Kaiser was arrested this week on a misdemeanor battery charge relating to an incident that took place last month involving a male resident of his Orlando, Florida apartment complex. When he learned of a warrant for his arrest on May 19, Kaiser was in Mexico for WWE/AAA. He returned to the United States the next day to turn himself in and is now out on a $1,000 bond.

Following the arrest, Kaiser’s attorney filed a motion requesting that Kaiser be allowed to continue to travel out of state and internationally. The state of Florida is not objecting to the motion.

El Grande Americano vs. Original El Grande Americano mask match —

The mask match between the two Americanos is set to headline AAA Noche de Los Grandes in Monterrey, Mexico on May 30. Gable originally introduced the Americano character to WWE television, but Kaiser took over when Gable underwent shoulder surgery in 2025. Since Gable’s return, they’ve had one of the best-received feuds in wrestling with Kaiser playing the babyface.

AAA has a live TV episode this Saturday that will finish the build to Noche de Los Grandes.

Update on Ludwig Kaiser’s motion to continue traveling for WWE

It sounds likely that Ludwig Kaiser will be legally allowed to continue traveling for WWE amid his ongoing case.

Court records show that Kaiser’s attorney has filed a supplemental version of his motion to allow out of state and international travel. In this updated document, it’s noted that Kaiser’s counsel has communicated with the assistant state attorney — and the state will not be objecting to the motion:

  • Since the initial filing of the Motion to Travel, undersigned counsel communicated with Assistant State Attorney Shaylynne Kotch, who indicated no objection to this motion.
  • WHEREFORE, for the foregoing reasons, the Defendant respectfully requests this Honorable Court to enter an Order allowing him to travel out of the State of Florida and internationally.

Kaiser has a huge match coming up in Mexico on May 30, where he (as El Grande Americano) is scheduled to face Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) in a mask vs. mask match. It’s set for AAA Noche de Los Grandes and is intended to be the culmination of their heated feud.

Details of Ludwig Kaiser battery arrest —

The 35-year-old Kaiser (Marcel Barthel) was arrested this week on a misdemeanor battery charge relating to an April 24 incident involving another male resident at his Orlando, Florida apartment complex. The alleged victim says Kaiser and a female were acting “uncontrollably intimate” by aggressively kissing in an elevator. The victim says he told them to “please have some manners” after exiting the elevator, which led to an attack where the victim was punched multiple times and pushed to the ground. Kaiser was identified as a suspect after police reviewed security footage. The victim then “immediately” identified Kaiser out of a photographic lineup of six individuals.

After learning of a warrant for his arrest the prior day, Kaiser turned himself in on May 20. He posted a $1,000 bond, with court records listing Kaiser’s friend and fellow WWE star Gunther (Walter Hahn) as the depositor.

There has been no comment from WWE or any word on if Kaiser will be facing punishment internally.

Kaiser’s full motion to allow out of state and international travel can be read below. Records do not show that an official determination has been made yet.

  • The Defendant, MARCEL BARTHEL, by and through his undersigned attorney, hereby moves this Honorable Court to enter an Order allowing him to travel out of the State of Florida and internationally, and as grounds therefore states as follows:

  • Since the initial filing of the Motion to Travel, undersigned counsel communicated with Assistant State Attorney Shaylynne Kotch, who indicated no objection to this motion.
  • WHEREFORE, for the foregoing reasons, the Defendant respectfully requests this Honorable Court to enter an Order allowing him to travel out of the State of Florida and internationally.

New details emerge on Ludwig Kaiser battery arrest

New details have emerged regarding the arrest of WWE star Ludwig Kaiser (Marcel Barthel).

It was first reported on Wednesday night that Kaiser had been arrested in Orange County, Florida on May 20 on charges of battery. According to arrest records, the incident took place on April 24 at the Orlando apartment complex Kaiser lives at. The alleged victim is identified as a fellow male resident, who accuses Kaiser of attacking him outside of an elevator. The attack is said to have happened after Kaiser and a female were acting “uncontrollably intimate” by aggressively kissing in the elevator. The victim says he told them to “please have some manners,” leading to the attack.

The affidavit says:

  • [The victim] stated he was battered by an unknown white male just outside the elevator on the 12th floor. [The victim] advised that at approximately 1830 hours, he entered the elevator and was followed by an unknown white male and an unknown white female. [The victim] stated that as the elevator ascended, the male and female began acting in an ‘uncontrollably intimate’ manner, which he described as aggressively kissing.
  • [The victim] stated that once the elevator reached the 12th floor, he exited the elevator and told the couple to ‘please have some manners.’ [The victim] advised that immediately after making the statement, the unknown male began attacking him. [The victim] described the attack as the male punching him multiple times and pushing him to the ground. [The victim] further stated the male made threats of additional violence toward him.

A responding officer observed a “large, fresh scratch” on the victim’s head and redness in the same area. Security footage was obtained showing a white male punching and pushing the victim outside of the elevator. Kaiser was identified as a possible suspect, and the victim immediately pointed to him as the attacker when presented with a photographic lineup of six individuals.

Per the terms of his bond, Kaiser cannot have any contact with the victim and cannot possess a firearm, consume alcohol to intoxication, or possess drug paraphernalia/controlled substances unless they are prescribed. He must also maintain separate residences from the victim.

Motion to continue traveling for WWE —

Kaiser became aware of the warrant on May 19 while in Mexico for WWE/AAA. He made plans to return to Orlando the next day and turn himself in. He was released on $1,000 bond and maintains his innocence in the case, submitting a written plea of not guilty. With that, he has filed a motion requesting that he be allowed to continue traveling both domestically and internationally:

  • Mr. Barthel is an international performer who is required to travel throughout the United States and around the world to remain employed. His primary residence is the apartment complex in downtown Orlando where the alleged incident occurred.
  • Mr. Barthel has no prior criminal history anywhere in the world and is not a danger to others. He maintains his innocence and has retained undersigned counsel to assist him in this matter. He has every intention of appearing at all required court appearances related to these allegations.
  • Wherefore, for the foregoing reasons, the Defendant respectfully requests this Honorable Court to enter an Order allowing him to travel out of the State of Florida and internationally.

The 35-year-old Kaiser, who is originally from Germany, has a highly anticipated mask vs. mask match scheduled for AAA Noche de los Grandes on May 30. It will be El Grande Americano (Kaiser) facing off against Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable).

WWE’s Ludwig Kaiser/El Grande Americano arrested on battery charges

WWE wrestler Ludwig Kaiser, aka El Grande Americano, was recently arrested on battery charges.

Kaiser, real name Marcel Barthel, was reportedly arrested today, May 20, 2026, on charges of battery in Orange County, Florida.

Updated on the Recently Booked website, the records showed minor details of the arrest. Shortly after, PWInsider confirmed that he was bonded out of Orange County Corrections on a $1000 bail.

Soon after the news emerged, fans started speculating about the reasons behind the arrest, with some even suggesting domestic battery charges. However, the rumors were soon dismissed by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful. It was reported that the arrest was made after an altercation with another male.

The arrest is accurate. We’re told the battery charge was against a male after an altercation. Not a domestic situation as some are speculating,” Sean Ross Sapp wrote on social media.

As of this writing, no more information is available on this, but we shall update the story as more details emerge.

Ric Flair issues apology to Ludwig Kaiser, wishes him ‘continued success’

Last week, Ric Flair said he had been blackballed from WWE after a confrontation with Ludwig Kaiser. Now he’s apologizing for what he said.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Flair claimed that WWE had banned him from WrestleMania appearances after he threatened Kaiser over the phone. He blamed Kaiser for the heat between his daughter Charlotte Flair and Kaiser’s then-girlfriend Tiffany Strattion. He also described Kaiser, a 35-year-old German, as a 24-year-old Englishman, and was surprised to learn he was still on the roster and wrestling in Mexico.

Flair has since apologized to Kaiser on social media. “I never implied that you couldn’t work, or didn’t have talent,” he wrote, identifying Kaiser by name. “I actually understand that you are doing really well with the Undertaker’s promotion.”

Undertaker has been working as a producer in AAA, the WWE-owned lucha libre promotion where Kaiser is starring as El Grande Americano.

“I am sorry that I got upset,” Flair continued. “I am naturally very protective of my daughters as I am sure as you grow older, you will be too. Continued success! I apologize for anything I said about you personally. It was not about your professional skill which I have heard is very good.”

Kaiser is set to face Original Grande Americano (Chad Gable) in a mask vs. mask match on May 30 at Arena Monterrey.

Date confirmed for Americano mask vs. mask match

The rivalry between El Grande Americano (Ludwig Kaiser) and Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) is officially set to culminate on May 30.

After a challenge was issued over the weekend, WWE has announced that the two Americanos will face off in a mask vs. mask match at AAA Noche de los Grandes on Saturday, May 30. The news was announced in a tweet sent out by The Undertaker, who is a leading voice in AAA creative

“Circle the date on your calendars!,” Undertaker wrote. “Mask vs. Mask will take place at #AAANocheDeLosGrandes on May 30th at Arena Monterrey. This will be intense!”

Our Dave Meltzer had reported this as the expected date for the bout, with Noche de los Grandes set to air as a full live special rather than being broken up into one-hour blocks.

To build up the match, Kaiser and Gable had a brawl in Mexico last Saturday that has been highly praised by fans for how intense it looked. It included Gable threatening AAA broadcast team member Andrea Bazarte — who is Kaiser’s girlfriend — before Kaiser made the save and laid down the mask vs. mask challenge.

Gable originally played the Americano character but was forced out of action for several months due to a shoulder injury he suffered in 2025. During that time, Kaiser took over the gimmick and expanded on it with the introduction of sidekicks Rayo Americano (Pete Dunne) and Bravo Americano (Tyler Bate).
