March 20, 2023 Observer Newsletter: WWE WrestleMania 39 cards take shape, AEW Revolution buys

It appears to be official at this point that the two WrestleMania main events will be Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley on 4/1, which will also include Seth Rollins vs. Logan Paul, and Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes on 4/2.

We had reported weeks back that Reigns vs. Rhodes was the night two main event and that Flair vs. Ripley was favored to be the night one main event. When we had asked about Usos vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn headlining night one, since at the time Zayn was the company’s hottest babyface character, we were told that there were political reasons in play as to where Flair vs. Ripley would most likely get that spot. It is not clear that the Usos match will be on night one, but when the original idea was to create a second world title, with Rollins, Drew McIntyre or Rhodes (Rhodes would be in this if The Rock was facing Reigns) as the three people considered for it, that was to be the night one main event, but it became the women’s match when that idea fell by the wayside. At that point in time, the Usos title defense was scheduled for night one.

Update on MJF fan incident from AEW Revolution

Tony Khan says MJF did not “act like a champion” when he tossed a beverage on a young fan sitting ringside at AEW Revolution.

During his Iron Man mach against Bryan Danielson, MJF grabbed a cup from a woman in the front row and splashed its contents on the woman’s young son who was sitting next to her.

The young man and his mother were real fans and not planted by AEW. The beverage was believed to be tequila and when MJF tossed the drink on the child, some got into his eyes. Amanda Huber and others came out and the young fan was taken backstage, given merchandise, and both him and his mother will be attending the show in Sacramento on Wednesday.

Tony Khan addressed the incident at the post-event media scrum.

Khan said:

We had a conversation before we came up here, we had a serious conversation and I mean that and it’s not to be taken lightly. The young man, Titus, was a real pro about it and we’ll see Titus again here in AEW. I believe Titus is actually coming to Sacramento but I was just with him and he was a real champ about it.

The champion didn’t act like a champion there but I think Titus was great.

The situation was also addressed by our own Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer on Monday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio

Alvarez said:

It was not a plant and we heard from multiple sources that it also was not water, which I’m sure Max didn’t know. Apparently, it was tequila and so some of the tequila got in the kids eye and the kid was not happy about that.

What I was told was, in the area, the kid got tequila in his eye and he was not happy so fans started giving the kid their merch, like, ‘here’s my shirt, you want my poster?’

And then Amanda Huber comes out and she’s making the kid feel better and then they bring the kid backstage and they are giving him all this signed merch. Then the mom and kid get tickets to Sacramento. So, this kid ended up having the best day of his life.

Meltzer then addressed Khan’s reaction to the incident.

Tony never rips on his talent, ever, and he did there. He just said, ‘yeah he made a mistake and it was serious’ and it could have been. I mean, it was very, very bad judgment. Max had an incredible, incredible match but that was something he should not have done.

MJF only responded that “the kid looked thirsty” when asked about the incident.

AEW Revolution media scrum notes: Tony Khan talks PPV, ROH, Mercedes Mone

AEW’s CEO, general manager, and head of creative Tony Khan addressed the media following Sunday’s Revolution pay-per-view.

Some notes from the scrum:

  • Khan said that Revolution’s PPV buys number was trending in the 130,000 to 140,000 range, above the level of November’s Full Gear event.
  • Khan noted that 9,000 were in attendance for the event at the Chase Center, with over 8,000 of those paid, for a gate in the range of $800,000, a record number for the city of San Francisco.
  • According to Khan, Ring of Honor’s Honor Club streaming service hit 12,000 subscribers with this past week’s ROH TV debut, a record number for the streaming service. He also noted that the ROH television show is closer to the shows he wrote growing up in terms of having lots of matches. He also discussed the positives and negatives of writing a studio wrestling show for hardcore wrestling fans in ROH, versus one for a global television audience in Dynamite.
  • In response to a question as to whether AEW had discussed bringing in Mercedes Mone when she was teased on television as a potential mystery partner on a Dynamite in Los Angeles in January, Khan did not mention Mone by name, referencing her as “the IWGP Women’s Champion.” He noted that while he has “great respect for that wrestler” and that “any wrestling company would be lucky to have her,” he said that out of respect for his business partners in NJPW he would not discuss whether or not he had any discussions about signing Mone.
  • Khan was asked about Kenny Omega’s contract status. He put Omega over as one of the biggest stars in the world, the IWGP US Champion, a former AEW World Champion, and said he hopes Omega is in AEW for a long time to come.
  • Khan was asked about a potential release date for the AEW Fight Forever video game, but did not have a firm date to announce. He said the game is an award-winning game, well received, and that it will be a big day when it is finally released.
  • When asked about AEW making its United Kingdom live event debut, Khan said that he has continued to make progress in his plans to take AEW to the UK, that the debut show will be in London, but that he did not have an official date to announce at this point.
  • MJF joined Khan for part of the scrum and parodied CM Punk’s All Out scrum appearance by eating pickles:
  • While MJF was on stage, Khan was asked about MJF throwing water on a young fan at ringside. Khan said that he had spent some time with the fan, a young man named Titus, and that the fan would be joining AEW in Sacramento for this Wednesday’s show. He said that he and MJF had a very serious talk about the incident, and that it was not to be taken lightly. He noted that while MJF is a champion, he did not act like a champion in that moment. MJF stayed in character and while Khan spoke, and did not directly comment on the situation beyond noting with sarcasm that he was “very concerned” about the situation.
  • Ricky Starks and Wardlow also joined Khan for comments and questions from the press, but most if not all of the questions and answers were asked and answered in character.
  • Khan and Starks spoofed Tony Khan’s Claudio Castagnoli hug:

FTR return to AEW at Revolution, attack The Gunns

FTR made their return to AEW at Sunday’s Revolution pay-per-view.

Making their first appearance in the company since December 2022, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler made an impact in their return, attacking AEW Tag Team Champions The Gunns in a post-match angle on the show.

After The Gunns retained their titles in a four-way contest, they were interviewed in the ring by Renee Paquette. After declaring themselves “the best tag team in the world,” FTR’s music hit. Harwood and Wheeler then hit the ring and laid out both Austin and Colten Gunn with a spike piledriver and a Big Rig.

FTR then posed with the AEW Tag titles, cementing themselves as the next challengers for The Gunns.

Prior to Sunday, FTR’s last AEW appearance came on Dynamite’s Holiday Bash episode on December 21. Their last match anywhere happened at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4 of this year.

FTR dropped both the ROH and AAA Tag titles in December, then lost NJPW’s IWGP Tag titles at Wrestle Kingdom, fueling speculation that they may be headed back to WWE when their AEW contracts expired, reportedly in April of this year.

Harwood addressed the possibility of a WWE return on his podcast, stating that Vince McMahon being back as executive chairman of WWE made the idea of a WWE return “questionable.”

House of Black win Trios titles at AEW Revolution

The House of Black are the new AEW Trios Champions.

Malakai Black, Buddy Matthews, and Brody King defeated The Elite (Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks) to win the championships for the first time. The finish had The Young Bucks attempt to hit the Meltzer Driver on Black, but Matthews broke things up by cutting off Matt Jackson in mid-air. The timing allowed King to hit Nick Jackson with the Dante’s Inferno, giving House of Black the win. After the match, the cameras showed The Elite recovering on the outside.

The Elite had held the titles for 53 days, defeating Death Triangle (Lucha Bros. and PAC) on the January 11 edition of Dynamite. Their win had capped off a best of seven series between the two teams.

In recent weeks, The House of Black had been seen on AEW television stalking The Young Bucks and Omega. At times, they would disappear then reappear on the stage and on the apron during and after The Elite’s matches, causing a distraction. A Trios Championship match was eventually confirmed for Sunday’s show.

Jungle Boy vs. Christian Cage ‘Final Burial’ match set for AEW Revolution

A ‘Final Burial’ match between Jungle Boy Jack Perry and Christian Cage has been made official for Revolution.

Friday’s Rampage had Jungle Boy, who appeared in a cemetery, issue a response to Christian Cage’s promo on Dynamite, where he ran down both Jungle Boy and his father. Perry told Cage that since he was such a big fan of his dad, he’ll give Cage the chance to say hi to him when he puts Cage in the ground. The match was then confirmed for this Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, AEW announced on social media that the match was to be a no holds barred match. That stipulation has since been changed to a ‘Final Burial’ match, with no explanation as to what the stipulation is.

Last month, Christian Cage made his return to the company after being out of action due to a triceps injury, attacking Perry. On the February 25 edition of Dynamite, Cage assaulted Perry yet again, getting the better of him and beating Perry’s head with a steel chair.

Briscoe set up the match with a promo on Rampage, paying tribute to his late brother, Jay. Briscoe said that while Jay is “with the Lord,” there are two brothers that he can team with. He then introduced Penta and Fenix.

The trios bout is the only match announced for Sunday’s pre-show to this point.

March 6, 2023 Observer Newsletter: MJF vs. Bryan Danielson preview, WWE WrestleMania 39 updates

Literally since the days after the Full Gear PPV show, where MJF went heel after being cheered wildly against the once most popular wrestler in the company, Jon Moxley, they’ve built up MJF vs. Bryan Danielson.

MJF immediately turned back heel and turned on Regal, who then left the company. Danielson protected Regal from Moxley trying to get revenge but still was the babyface as he had to score five wins in a row to get his shot at the title in a 60:00 Iron Man match on 3/5 at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

The ability to entertain a crowd for 60:00 was considered a badge of honor in another generation and made people like Lou Thesz, Jack Brisco, The Funk Brothers, Ric Flair, and others into legendary performers.

But those were organic 60-minute matches, which actually were very frequent for world title matches in the NWA and Japan during the 50s, 60s, 70s, and into the 80s.

Jungle Boy vs. Christian Cage official for AEW Revolution

Another match is official for AEW Revolution.

On Dynamite this Wednesday, Christian Cage challenged Jungle Boy to a no-holds barred match for Sunday’s pay-per-view. During an in-ring promo, Cage said that Jungle Boy’s dream of winning a singles title in AEW will happen over his “dead body.” This was followed by a video from Jungle Boy that featured him digging a grave with Cage’s name on the headstone while images of their rivalry were interspersed within.

AEW has since made the match official in an Instagram post published on Thursday.

This will be the second time Jungle Boy and Cage have faced each other in singles competition. Cage defeated Jungle Boy in just 24 seconds in their first match at All Out 2022.

Sunday will be Jungle Boy’s fourth singles match on an AEW pay-per-view. He lost to MJF at Double or Nothing 2020, was defeated by Cage at All Out 2022, and picked up a victory over Luchasaurus in a cage match at Full Gear in November.

Revolution will be Christian Cage’s third singles match on an AEW pay-per-view. He was defeated by Kenny Omega in an AEW World Championship match at All Out 2021 and picked up a quick win over Jungle Boy at All Out 2022.

AEW Revolution takes place Sunday, March 5, 2023 from the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. The official card is below.

  • 60-minute iron man match for the AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Bryan Danielson
  • AEW Women’s World Championship: Jamie Hayter (c) vs. Ruby Soho vs. Saraya
  • TNT Championship: Samoa Joe (c) vs. Wardlow
  • AEW World Tag Team Championship: The Gunns (c) vs. The Acclaimed vs. Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal vs. Orange Cassidy & Danhausen
  • AEW World Trios Championship: The Elite (c) vs. The House of Black
  • Chris Jericho vs. Ricky Starks — JAS banned from ringside
  • Texas Death match: Jon Moxley vs. Hangman Page
  • Christian Cage vs. Jungle Boy in a no-holds barred match

Christian Cage challenges Jungle Boy to AEW Revolution ‘fight’

Christian Cage has challenged “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry to a fight at Sunday’s AEW Revolution pay-per-view.

During an in-ring promo on Wednesday’s Dynamite, Christian stated that Jungle Boy’s stated goal to win a singles title in AEW this year will happen over Christian’s dead body, and that Christian wants to win a title this year. He then issued the challenge for Sunday, and said that Jungle Boy is a “no-talent hack, just like his father” if he doesn’t accept.

After Christian’s promo, a video played with Perry digging a grave, then showing a headstone with Christian’s name on it, seemingly accepting the challenge.

AEW has yet to officially announce the match for Sunday, but that appears to be just a formality.

The updated lineup for Revolution:

AEW Revolution, Sunday, March 5 —

  • 60-minute iron man match for the AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Bryan Danielson
  • AEW Women’s World Championship: Jamie Hayter (c) vs. Ruby Soho vs. Saraya

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw, WrestleMania updates, Jon Jones’ return and the other recent news with Wrestling Observer Radio tonight.

AEW Revolution on Sunday will once again be airing in movie theaters around the U.S. and Canada. It will also play at some Dave & Buster’s and some Tom’s Watch Bar locations. You can find a location in your area here.

The Tommy Fury win over Jake Paul via split decision yesterday in a boxing match in Saudi Arabia did 4.2 million Google searches which is a giant number. The guys both got giant paydays from Saudi Arabia. This was Paul’s first fight against an actual boxer and it was competitive. Paul knocked Fury down in the eighth round but Fury showed better boxing skills most of the way. The scores were 76-73 from two judges (meaning Fury won six of eight rounds and Paul got a 10-8 8th round) and 75-74 for Paul (meaning 4-4 in rounds).

The situation with Superstar Billy Graham and wife Valerie Coleman has gotten worse. Both have COVID to add to Billy’s other very serious health issues. That means Valerie can’t be near Billy in the hospital.

Want to wish Jay Dumont the best. His entire situation breaks my heart at this point.

Thanks to Kenny K, Shannon Walsh, Andrew Gotch, Ross Blair, Alex Keeling and Gerard Di Trolio for weekend reports.

We’re looking for reports from yesterday’s Impact tapings in Las Vegas to [email protected] as well as from Raw in Grand Rapids tonight for Main Event matches and anything else not on the live show.

Raw is tonight in Grand Rapids, MI. There are a lot of WrestleMania ramifications on the show. We’ll see if Brock Lesnar really is wrestling Omos at WrestleMania and the tag title match with Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky vs. Becky Lynch & Lita for the tag title will set up the title match with Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler, or at least that was what was planned last week and there’s no indication that has changed. Rousey last week was to appear on this show although she’s not been advertised. She was at the house show last night in Rockford, IL. Also announced is Cody Rhodes vs. Chad Gable which could be great, Street Profits vs. Jimmy Uso & Solo Sikoa which also looks good, Asuka vs. Carmella, Piper Niven vs. Candice LeRae ad Miz reveals the secret gift Maryse got him. WWE is hot as tonight’s show was 400 shy of a sellout this morning at 8,400 so with the walk-up it should sell out.

We’re looking for reports from the show as far as Main Event matches or anything not on the live show to [email protected]

The final show of the Fantastica Mania tour is at 4:30 a.m. Eastern tomorrow morning from Korakuen Hall. The big main event is Mistico vs. Atlantis Jr.. Atlantis Jr. has been given a big push the entire tour including beating Mistico in a tag. There are no title matches on the final night so they are counting on this as a dream match. World Trios Championship match added to AEW Revolution

A new World Trios Championship match has been added to Revolution.

On Friday’s Rampage, it was announced that The Elite will take on The House of Black in a match for the titles on March 5 in San Francisco. Earlier in the show, The Young Bucks were wrestling Aussie Open when the lights momentarily went out. After The Young Bucks won the match, the lights went out again, this time with The House of Black appearing on the apron when the lights came back up. But just as quickly as they appeared, they then disappeared.

The House of Black have been targeting The Elite in recent weeks. On last week’s Rampage, The Elite defeated AR Fox and Top Flight to retain the Trios titles. After the match, The House of Black appeared on the stage, then left, similar to what they did on this week’s show.

Here is the updated lineup for next Sunday’s Revolution card in San Jose:

VIDEO: Bryan Alvarez & Dave Meltzer discuss MJF/Danielson segment on AEW Dynamite

Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the MJF/Bryan Danielson segment that took place on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

The segment had MJF interrupt Danielson to talk about how he had how he had been abandoned by everyone he loved until he found one person who he proposed to, only for her to break up with him. Both Meltzer and Alvarez on Thursday’s show wondered if it was true, as MJF has used moments in his personal life in promos, though some of the details have been embellished or changed.

MJF told Danielson that he hated him because he has a wife, family, and children, yet despite having serious injuries in the past, continues to wrestle and thus loves wrestling more than his family. After MJF went into the camera and spoke directly to Danielson’s children despite Danielson warning him not to do so, MJF entered the ring where the two ended up in a pull-apart brawl. Alvarez thought that Danielson had waited too long to attack MJF.

“Danielson has to stand in the ring while MJF is giving a message to his children by name!” Alvarez exclaimed. “Bro, I would have ran out of the ring and beaten the s*** out of this guy.”

In the end, both thought it was a good angle to hype their upcoming 60-minute Iron Man match at AEW Revolution on March 5.

“I thought it was a great angle, actually,” Meltzer said. Alvarez called it an “excellent go-home angle.”

“Absolutely,” Meltzer said. “It’s been well built, but I think this really drove it home. This was really good business, I thought.”
