A match that originally was a hoax on social media now has the attention of AEW matchmakers who hope they can pull it off.
An X user posted a graphic Wednesday showing AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita defending against young CMLL star Mascara Dorada for Dynamite that looked real enough that at least one media outlet reported on it as fact. However, it was completely made up.
On the post-Dynamite edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said in speaking with someone from AEW, they are very interested in putting that match together.
“Whoever put out that graphic spurred an idea in people’s heads and, in fact, they love the idea of that match. I don’t know if it’s going to happen anytime soon,” he said.
The 22-year-old Dorada has wrestled twice for AEW this year — once as part of a January eight-man tag team match and then in a February trios match against the Blackpool Combat Club.
Takeshita won the International title at last Saturday’s WrestleDream and has never competed against Dorada or in CMLL. AEW and CMLL talent have worked together frequently this year as their partnership has expanded, including at Forbidden Door and will again at this January’s Wrestle Dynasty in Japan along with NJPW.
The AEW International title will not be defended on the first night of MLP’s Forged in Excellence this weekend.
On X, the promotion wrote that while Konosuke Takeshita’s title won’t be on the line, if Speedball Mike Bailey does win the title, he will earn a future shot at the title.
“Night One’s main event for #MLPForgedInExcellence is new @AEW International Champion Konosuke @Takesoup versus TNA X-Division Champion @SpeedballBailey,” they wrote. “And while Takeshita’s new title is NOT on the line in the match, it still has huge implications – if Speedball WINS, he earns a future title shot at the AEW International Champion! It all goes down on Saturday, October 19 in Windsor, Ontario!”

Takeshita won the title at WrestleDream this past Saturday, defeating former champion Will Ospreay and Ricochet in a three-way match. The finish had Callis associate Kyle Fletcher turn on his friend Ospreay, striking him with a screwdriver and allowing Takeshita to win.
Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling Forged In Excellence takes place October 19 & 20, 2024, at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Both shows will air live on Triller TV as pay-per-view events.

Night two (Sunday, October 20):
AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita defends against Josh Alexander
ROH Women’s World Champion Athena defends against Gisele Shaw
Konosuke Takeshita is the new AEW International Champion and he has an unexpected ally to thank.
Takeshita won the title during Saturday’s WrestleDream after Kyle Fletcher made a surprise appearance and stabbed then-champion Will Ospreay in the back of the head with a screwdriver. As Ospreay looked on in disbelief at Fletcher, Takeshita pulled down his kneepad, hit a running knee, and got the pin.
Afterward, Fletcher hit Ospreay with a Tiger Driver 91 to seal his turn.
The bout was a three-way that also included Ricochet.
Fletcher and Ospreay were friends, tag team partners, and faction mates in United Empire for years. The two had been part of the Don Callis Family until Ospreay and Callis parted ways. On this past week’s Title Tuesday edition of Dynamite, Ospreay called out Callis who then admitted he told Takeshita to attack both Ospreay and Ricochet after their recent title match.
The win gives Takeshita his first AEW singles title and ends Ospreay’s 49-day second run with the International title.
Five matches are set for tonight’s AEW Rampage including the House of Black in tag team action.
In the featured match, Malakai Black & Buddy Matthews will team up against Lio Rush & Action Andretti. Rush and Andretti are aligned with Dante Martin, Darius Martin and Leila Grey of Top Flight.
Konosuke Takeshita will look to keep his recent win streak going as he goes one-on-one with Angelico.
After staking her claim on Dynamite as the top contender to Mariah May’s AEW Women’s World title, former CMLL Women’s Champion Willow Nightingale will be in action against Taya Valkyrie.
Anna Jay returns from her Japanese excursion in the Stardom 5-Star Grand Prix tournament to take on Robyn Renegade.
Former AEW Tag Team Champions The Acclaimed (Max Caster & Anthony Bowens) will face enhancement talents Ryan Clancy & TJ Crawford.
This week’s Rampage was taped last Saturday in Springfield, Massachusetts, following Collision. Spoilers from the show are available here.

Malakai Black and Buddy Matthews(w/ Brody King) defeated Lio Rush and Action Andretti (w/ Top Flight & Leila Grey) (9:04)
At least Top Flight weren’t dressed like airline pilots. Black calmy sat in his corner while Rush and Andretti argued over who would start. Rush caught Black with a quick stunner which didn’t really phase Black. Andretti and Matthews got the tags and there was more dissension between Andretti and Rush. Rush was aggravated and it was distracting Rush. Rush ate a knee from Matthews that sent him to the floor.
On the floor, Andretti kept trying to get into it with Matthews. Back in the ring, Andretti flew in and hit Matthews with a springboard forearm. Matthews blocked a double-suplex attempt, only to get hit with a double dropkick. The Righteous was shown watching the match from the back.
After a split-screen break, Black nearly choked out Andretti with a chinlock. Andretti fought out of it, and both guys crashed into each other going for crossbody blocks. Rush and Matthews got the tags, and Rush caught Matthews with a poison rana and a springboard cutter. Black got the tag and floored Rush with an elbow. Rush came back and set up Black for a splash off the top, but Andretti got the blind tag. Rush and Andretti argued, but that gave Black the opening to hit Andretti with the Black Mass kick and got the pinfall. The arguing between Rush and Andretti was over the top.
After the match, Andretti threw a water bottle at Brody King, who mauled him with a clothesline. Top Flight drug Andretti out of the ring before things got worse for him. Later in the show, it was announced that Andretti and King will face off at Collision: Grand Slam tomorrow night. So I guess things are gonna get worse for Andretti anyway.
– Lexi Nair interviewed Anna Jay, who’s going to find her new place in AEW tonight after a tour of Japan.
Anna Jay defeated Robyn Renegade (2:39)
This is Jay’s first match back from a tour of Stardom. Jay blocked a hip toss attempt and buried a series of knees in Renegade’s midsection. Jay yanked Renegade out of a corner and hit a shotgun dropkick. Renegade came back with a stiff forearm. Renegade clawed at Jay’s face… then licked her own fingers afterward. Jay fired back with chops, ducked a clothesline and hit a forearm. Jay hit a rolling neckbreaker, then hit a Gory bomb to get her 60th win all time in the women’s division. Jay looked improved here.
– Renee Paquette moderated a face-to-face between Ricochet and WIll Ospreay. Ospreeay kind of ran down Ricochet for not winning the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, and Ricochet responded that with his decades of experience, failing to win that title didn’t matter. The full interview is available on YouTube.
Konosuke Takeshita defeated Angelico (8:05 aired)
Takeshita hit a flying cutter just before the long commercial break.
After the break, Angelico caught Takeshita with a pair of clotheslines and a small package for a near fall. Angelico tied up Takeshita’s arms, but Takeshita broke free and hit a forearm. Angelico tied up Takeshita with a leg scissors and chinlock combination, but Takeshita made it to the ropes. Both guys climb the ropes, but Takeshita raked Angelico’s face to send him to the mat. Angelico climb back up again and backdropped Takeshita off the turnbuckles! Angelico then went for a blind dive, but dove right into a forearm from Takeshita. A spinning blue thunder bomb followed by a falcon arrow finished off Angelico. Most of the match took place in the split screen before the break, but the finish was awesome.
– Recap of Bryan Danielson & Nigel McGuinness and Dabry Allin & Jox Moxley from Grand Slam.
The Acclaimed (w/ Billy Gunn) defeated “Fancy” Clancy and TJ Crawford (2:03)
Max Caster’s rap was quite political. He rapped about “eating cats and dogs in Springfield,” but they weren’t in that Springfield. A few weeks ago it looked like Acclaimed was thisclose to getting the tag titles back, but they look further away from the top of the division than ever. Clancy had a nice looking dropkick. Other than that, this was a squash for the Acclaimed. Bowens hit the uranage on Clancy, followed by the mic drop from Caster. He wasn’t the legal man, so Caster and Bowens hit some kind of double team powerbomb out of a press slam on Crawford for the finish.
After the match, Caster cut a promo on the MXM Collection (calling them the Maximum Male Models), The MXM Collection responded with just an incredible promo from the big screen in the arena.
Willow Nightingale defeated Taya Valkyrie (10:53)
Willow avenged a earlier loss to Valkyire with a victory here.
Valkyrie tried to whip Nightingale out of the corner, but Nightingale did a cartwheel and caught Valkyrie with an enziguri. Nightingale followed up with several slams. Nightingale hit a shotgun dropkick off the middle rope, and Valkyrie dropped to the floor. There was no respite for Valkyrie on the floor, as Nightingale followed her out with a cannonball.
Nightingale was fighting from underneath after the split screen break. Nightingale floored Valkyrie with a lariat. Nightingale mauled Valkyrie in the corner and hit a spinebuster for a near fall. Crowd chanted for Willow, but she missed a shotgun dropkick. Valkyrie came back with a clothesline and hit a meteora in the corner for a near fall.
Valkyrie hit a superkick and went to the top, but Nightingale cut her off with a superplex. Valkyrie hit a series of forearms, but Nightingale came back with the pounce. Willow got the pinfall after a Doctor Bomb.
A trios match between The Conglomeration and Dark Order headlines tonight’s AEW Rampage.
Orange Cassidy, Mark Briscoe & Kyle O’Reilly will battle Alex Reynolds, John Silver & Evil Uno. The match is a tune-up for Cassidy who faces Chris Jericho on this Wednesday’s Dynamite.
Konosuke Takeshita of The Don Callis Family will face Action Andretti one-on-one. Takeshita will team with AEW International Champion Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher against AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada and AEW Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks this Wednesday, and has made his next target clear: Okada.
Saraya & Harley Cameron will take on former NWA Women’s Tag Team Champions The Hex (Allysin Kay & Marti Belle) in tag team action.
Two other matches round out the card as Roderick Strong battles Beef and Kamille takes on Robyn Renegade.
Tonight’s Rampage was taped Wednesday night, September 11 in Lexington, Kentucky at Rupp Arena. Spoilers from the show are available here.

Today is Friday the 13th. Are they bringing Abadon out of the mothballs for this one?
The Conglomeration (Orange Cassidy, Mark Briscoe & Kyle O’Reilly) defeated The Dark Order (Evil Uno, Alex Reynolds & John Silver) (10:07)
Okay, I guess The Dark Order on Friday the 13th works.
The Conglomeration came out in new matching tees which I’m sure are available on the ShowAEW website. Orange Cassidy was triple-teamed by the Dark Order, but got a near fall on Silver for two. Lots of comedy in the opening minutes, with Silver missing chops on Cassidy and O’Reilly and hitting his teammates instead. Briscoe and Uno had an awkward exchange, then Briscoe floored Reynolds with a clothesline going into a split screen break.
O’Reilly got the hot tag after the split-screen break and destroyed Reynolds with kicks. Cassidy joined in and helped ouble team Reynolds. Silver prevented an Orange Punch. Uno hit O’Reily with a boot and a DDT. Silver and Reynolds hit their combo series for a near fall on Cassidy. Cassidy escaped a pendulum bomb attempt from the Dark Order, and took down Uno and SIlver with a hurricanrana.
Brisco hit a plancha on Silver, then used a chair to hit a springboard plancha on Reynolds and Uno on the other side of the ring. Back in the ring, Cassidy Reynolds with an Orange Punch, and Briscoe hit the Jay Driller for the pinfall. Inoffensive but uninspired.
– In the back, Lexi Nair conducted an interview with The Undisputed Era and ROH Tag Team Champions Dustin Rhodes & Sammy Guevara. Matt Taven challenged the champs to a fight without honor, but Dustin upped the ante and made it a Bunkhouse Match for next Saturday on Collision.
Kamille defeated Robyn Renegade (3:16)
This was a total squash. Kamille dumped Renegade with a fisherman’s suplex out of a bearhug. Renegade got a one count after a top rope bodyblock. Kamille came back with a vertical powerslam, then hit a dominator (which she has renamed “The Truth”) for the pinfall.
– Christopher Daniels (in a snazzy tie) accepted Jack Perry’s open challenge for the TNT title at tomorrow night’s Collision.
Roderick Strong defeated Beef (6:53)
Beef is a big, sweaty guy, who is the second cousin (by marriage) of Anthony Henry. The crowd chanted “Beef!” whenever Beef hit a forearm. Beef hit Strong with a dropkick heading into the commercial break.
After a long commercial break, we return to Beef pummeling Strong and the crowd firmly behind Beef. Beef hit a bulldog for two. Beef went to the top, but Strong caught him with a kick and perplexed him off the top for a near fall. Huge pop for Beef kicking out. Beef caught Strong with an avalanche, then went to the floor to save Henry from a beating from Taven and Bennett. Beef got back in the ring and ran right into a knee from Strong, and Strong got the pinfall.
– The Righteous, Vincent and Dutch, cut a promo. They’re looking for the House of Black.
Saraya & Harley Cameron defeated Marti Belle & Allysin Kay (3:36)
Saraya and Cameron worked over the less-experienced Belle. The fight went to the floor, where Saraya whipped Belle into the ring barricades. Belle finally got the tag to Kay, who mounted a brief comeback. Cameron caught Kay with the Soul Food and a flying knee, but Saraya had gotten the blind tag so Cameron couldn’t get the pinfall. Saraya then hit the Nightcap on Kay for the pinfall.
After the match, Jamie Hayer ran in (fresh from the 70s, based on her outfit) and floored Cameron with a forearm. Saraya ran out through the crowd.
Konosuke Takeshita (w/ Don Callis) defeated Action Andretti (w/ Leila Gray and Lio Rush) (11:52)
Top Flight and Lio Rush came out with Andretti, and it looks like they’ve dumped that goofy airline pilot’s gear.
Andretti started out strong against Takeshita, but the fight went to the floor and Takeshita whipped him into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Takeshita hit a top rope superplex for a near fall.
Takeshita dominated through the split-screen break. Andretti hit a handspring back elbow for a near fall. Andretti hit a rolling senton on Takeshita, who was lying on the floor. Andretti hit a tope con hilo, then tossed Takeshita in the ring for a springboard 450 that missed. Takeshita hit a German suplex and a lariat for a near fall.
Andretti countered a powerbomb with a rana for a near fall. Takeshita and Andretti stayed one step ahead of each other in a neat exchange that finally ended with Andretti missing a standing shooting star press. Andretti hit a shotgun dropkick out of the corner that Takeshita completely no sold. Takeshita hit a blue thunder bomb for a near fall. (Really, that should have been the finish –or lead directly to the finish– after the convincing no-sell from Takeshita). Andretti came back with a top rope rana. Andretti did a springboard right into a forearm from Takeshita. Running knee and a spinning falcon arrow finished off Andretti and Takeshita got the pinfall. (The spinning falcon arrow may be called the “Raging Fire,” that’s what Excalibur said when Takeshita hit the move, but he might have just been metaphorical)
Announced for Dynamite Wednesday: The Young Bucks & Kazuchika Okada v. Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita & Will Ospreay.
AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada now knows his three opponents for a four-way title match set for this Saturday’s All Out pay-per-view.
In three qualifying matches that took place during Friday’s edition of Collision, Orange Cassidy, Ring of Honor Champion Mark Briscoe and Konosuke Takeshita (seen above) all qualified by virtue of their victories.
Orange Cassidy has secured the win and will now join Conglomeration teammate Mark Briscoe to compete for the #AEW Continental Title in a 4-way match tomorrow night at #AEWAllOut!
Cassidy upended Bryan Keith, Briscoe defeated Lance Archer, and Takeshita survived a hard-hitting bout with The Beast Mortos to punch their tickets. Of note, Briscoe and Cassidy are teammates within The Conglomeration.
The three men will challenge Okada for the title he won back in March and has defended four times since then. None of them have ever held the Continental title.
With this victory, Konosuke Takeshita has secured the final spot in the 4-way match for the #AEW Continental Title tomorrow night at #AEWAllOut!

A four-way match featuring the returning Konosuke Takeshita headlines this week’s AEW Rampage.
After a month away competing in NJPW’s G1 tournament, Takeshita returns in a four-way against The Beast Mortos, Komander, and Lio Rush. Takeshita finished second in B Block in the G1, ultimately losing in the quarterfinals round of the tournament’s playoffs.
In a three-way tag team contest, Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal face Undisputed Kingdom’s Matt Taven & Mike Bennett, and Private Party’s Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen.
Two stars in the women’s division will have featured bouts against enhancement talent on the show with Nyla Rose in action against Aminah Belmont, plus Mina Shirakawa facing Missa Kate.
After returning on this past weekend’s All In and attacking FTR, James Drake & Zack Gibson of Grizzled Young Veterans will square off with Turbo Floyd & Truth Magnum of The Outrunners.
Tonight’s Rampage was taped Wednesday night in Champaign, Illinois. Spoilers from the show are available here.
**********
Taped in Champaign, Illinois.
Excalibur, Tony Schiavone & Matt Menard were on commentary.
Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal (w/ Karen Jarrett) won a three way over the Undisputed Kingdom & Private Party (9:51)
Taven hit a dropkick then reminded us that he is, in fact, Matt Taven. Taven got caught in the Private Party corner and it was not much of a party for Taven. They worked over his arm and hit him with a flapjack. Bennett ran in and Private Party delivered a dropkick/hangman’s neckbreaker combination, and Quen floored both members of the Undisputed Era with a crossbody. But back in the ring, Taven clotheslined Zay to take control.
Jay Lethal got the tag and teased getting the figure four on all four of his opponents. Bennett popped up Lethal into a forearm from Bennett to take control going into the commercial break.
Lethal got the tag to Jarrett, who got a pop. Jarrett cleaned Bennet’s clock in the corner with punuches and gave Zay a high back body drop. Jarrett set up Taven for a neckbreaker from his partner.
Private Party got the silly string on Bennett, and Quen followed up with the 450 for a near fall. Bennet hit a rolling forearm and a Death Valley Driver on Bennett. Lethal caught Zay with the Lethal Injection. Jarrett went for the The Stroke on Taven, but Taven blocked it. Jarrett and Lethal got a Bennett and Lethal in stereo figure fours, and both Taven and Bennett eventually tapped out.
Mina Shirakawa defeated Missa Kate (3:03)
Shirakawa has the RevPro Women’s Championship belt with her, as well as a “Queen of Southside” belt.
Shirakawa hit a frog splash for a near fall. Kate countered a reverse suplex with a superkick for a near fall. Shirawaka hit a rolling elbow and a backfist. Shirawaka hit a sit out reverse suplex and got the pinfall.
– Stokely Hathaway & Kriss Statlander talk some trash about Willow Nightingale, and Statlander knocked out a stagehand with a steel chain.
Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) defeated The Outrunners (Turbo Floyd & Truth Magnum) (w/ Erica Leigh) (8:45)
Lots of impressive trash talk from Gibson. Gibson fell victim to a double elbow for a near fall. Drake tripped up Turbo Floyd and Gibson hit him with a sliding kick.
After a long commercial, The Grizzled Young Veterans continued to work over Magnum. Turbo finally got the hot tag and slammed both Veterans. Gibson set up Floyd for a boot from Drake. Turbo came back and clotheslined both men. Magnum went to the top, but Drake shoved him down. Gibson and Drake hit Magnum with a Doomsday Device (which really should have been the finish… I mean Drake took Magnum’s head off with that lariat), then finished him off with a High Lo. This was twice as long as it needed to be.
Nyla Rose defeated Aminah Belmont (1:31)
Rose won this quickly with a spinning Beast Bomb.
Konosuke Takeshita (w/ Don Callis) won a four-way by pinning Komander (w/ Alex Abrahantes) that also included The Beast Mortos & Lio Rush (13:53)
Hype videos for each man in the match were shown throughout the show, making this match feel a bit more special than your average Rampage main event. Also, good to see Abrahantes isn’t out of a job with the Lucha Bros likely leaving AEW.
Takeshita and Mortos overpowered their much smaller opponents early on. Takeshita and Mortos caught their opponents when they went for dives on the floor, and did the old Aussie Open spot where they rammed them into each other. Mortos and Takeshita got into a brawl on the floor, and then Rush and Komander caught them with a pair of tope con hilos.
Back in the ring, Rush and Komander had a speedy exchange. Rush looked fantastic, but just as he got the edge on Komander, Takeshita and Mortos ran in and mauled him. Takeshita put Rush down with a big boot. Komader pushed off Takeshita and hit him with a dropkick. Rush hit a rope walk tornio on Takeshita and Rush. Mortos then hit his own through the ropes tornio on Komander.
Takeshita floored Mortos with a forearm. Takeshita blocked a rana from Rush and went for a powerbomb, but Rush escaped. Takeshita tossed Rush into the ropes, but he rebounded off the bottom rope and into a stunner on Takeshita. Mortos caught Komader with a lung blower, and Mortos and Takeshita clotheslined each other.
Mortos went to the top, but Komander caught him with a kick and followed him up. Komander set up a Spanish Fly, but Takeshita got up there and suplexed Komander, who gave Mortos the Spanish Fly. Insane spot. Takeshita went for the cover on both Komander and Mortos, but Rush broke it up with a splash off the top.
Komader went for a poisoned rana, but Takeshita blocked it. Komander turned it into a victory roll for a near fall, avoiding a dive from Mortos at the same time. Takeshita went for an outside in superplex, but Komader escaped. Komander hit a springboard poisoned rana on Mortos for a near fall. Komander missed a shooting star press on Mortos when he dropped to the floor. Rush hit a tope on Mortos. He went for a frog splash on Komander, but missed and Mortos broke Rush in half with a spear. Mortos powerbombed Komander on his knee, and Takeshita hit Mortos with a knee. Takeshita hit Komander with a spinning Blue Thunder Bomb, then a Falcon Arrow to get the pinfall.
This was the best Rampage main event in forever and a good return win for Takeshita.
On Collision tomorrow (which feels like it’s missing a main event):
Tomohiro Ishii v. Kyle Fletcher
Queen Aminada v. Hikaru Shida v. Thunder Rosa v. Serena Deeb
FTR v. The Undisputed Kingdom
Lee Moriarty, Johnny TV & Mortos v. Hologram, Kyle O’Reilly & Orange Cassidy
Rampage has felt a little more interesting the last few weeks. I hope this keeps up.
Konosuke Takeshita returns to AEW after a month away wrestling in the NJPW G1 Climax tournament on this Friday’s Rampage episode.
A four-way bout with Takeshita vs. The Beast Mortos vs. Komander vs. Lio Rush is one of five matches set for the Friday, August 30 Rampage taped Wednesday night.
Also set for the show, Grizzled Young Veterans Zack Gibson & James Drake will take on Turbo Floyd & Truth Magnum of The Outrunners in tag team action.
In the AEW women’s division, Nyla Rose will wrestle Aminah Belmont on Friday’s episode. In another women’s contest, Mina Shirakawa will take on Missa Kate.
A triple threat tag team bout is also set for Friday’s Rampage, with Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal teaming against Mike Bennett & Matt Taven, and Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen.
The first match announcement has been made for Scott D’Amore’s revival of Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling.
AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita will face off against TNA star Josh Alexander at Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling Forged In Excellence this October. It’s a two-night event that’s being held at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20. The promotion hasn’t announced which night Takeshita vs. Alexander will be taking place on.
Takeshita and Alexander have only faced each other once before, going to a 20-minute time limit draw for indie promotion Garden State Pro Wrestling in 2022.
Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling is a new venture for D’Amore, who was fired as president of TNA Wrestling this February amid a leadership shakeup. D’Amore also has the title of president in this new promotion. It’s a revival of the Maple Leaf Wrestling brand that originally existed from the 1930s to the 1980s.
Both nights of Forged In Excellence are set to air live as pay-per-views on Triller TV. Mauro Ranallo is returning to pro wrestling commentary as the play-by-play voice of the promotion. El Phantasmo, Raj Dhesi (Jinder Mahal), Gisele Shaw, KUSHIDA, Alex Zayne, Kevin Knight, Jake Something, Kylie Rae, and Trevor Lee are among the other talent advertised for Forged In Excellence.
An all-star eight man tag has been added to the next AEW Dynamite.
Mark Briscoe, Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy, and Dante Martin will team together this Wednesday to face off against Roderick Strong, Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita, and Zack Sabre Jr. The match was announced during an O’Reilly/Anthony Henry match on Collision. After O’Reilly won, he and Strong, who was doing commentary, had a staredown.
Briscoe, Martin, and Takeshita have all qualified for the upcoming ladder match at Forbidden Door that will determine the next TNT Champion. Cassidy and Sabre will meet at Forbidden Door as well after Sabre issued the challenge.
A face-to-face between Swerve Strickland and Will Ospreay has also been added after the two confronted one another at the end of Dynamite. After Strickland said Ospreay couldn’t hold both the AEW World and International titles on his shoulders, Ospreay defied Strickland by taking the AEW World Championship and placed it on his shoulder. Strickland took the belt back, telling Ospreay he’s only standing now because they are friends.
Here is the updated lineup for Wednesday:
MJF vs. Rush kicks off the show commercial-free
AEW Tag Team title eliminator: The Young Bucks (Matthew & Nicholas Jackson) vs. The Acclaimed (Max Caster & Anthony Bowens)
Mark Briscoe, Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy, and Dante Martin vs. Roderick Strong, Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita, and Zack Sabre Jr.
An IWGP World title eliminator match has been added to the AEW Double or Nothing lineup.

AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Tony Schiavone & Taz as we go to the entrances for the opening contest.
Will Ospreay defeated Katsuyori Shibata
(This was a fantastic opener, which should surprise no one. It was a back-and-forth battle for most of the match and I’m happy Shibata didn’t take nearly as many bumps on his head that I thought he would, though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t hold my breath when Ospreay went for his Storm Driver. Ospreay continues to be wildly over with the crowd from the moment he walks out on stage.)
Before the match began, we were shown footage of the first singles match between these two from the New Japan New Beginning in Osaka show from 2017. Both men traded ground work early, as each man showcased a series of counters until Ospreay dodged a PK into a stalemate. Ospreay exploded out of the corner with a shotgun dropkick and fired off forearms leading to a stalling corner dropkick, a page out of Shibata’s playbook. Shibata bailed to the floor, but was met with an Ospreay slingshot dive. Ospreay took way too long to go back to the ring and ate a running boot by Shibata to the outside. Both men traded strikes until Shibata flattened Ospreay with a suplex on the floor. Back inside, Shibata zoned in on the legs, Ospreay attempted to fight back with chops, only to eat a Saito Suplex that took things to commercial.
Back from break, Ospreay regained the advantage, but was caught on a dive attempt and booted into the guard rail. Shibata tried another whip, but Ospreay leapt over the railing and jumped off it with a forearm. Pip Pip Cheerio connected back inside for two, but Kawada kicks just woke Shibata up, who no sold, ultimately dropping Ospreay with one shot. Shibata couldn’t keep Ospreay down in the corner, so Tenryu style chops led to the stalling dropkick. An underhook throw from Shibata tried to lead to the abdominal stretch, but switched to the Octopus Hold. Ospreay got the ropes as both traded snap German suplexes until Ospreay tried his handspring Pele kick, only this time, Shibata countered into a STF. Ospreay got the ropes to escape submission again, blocking a PK to deliver more forearms. Shibata, however, would eat three shots to land one, as Ospreay continued to collapse until firing up with a kip up enzugiri into the double down.
Shibata ducked Hidden Blade and hit a Sleeper Suplex before a rear naked choke saw Ospreay fade, but got the arm up at two. Shibata was hung up in the ropes, as Ospreay hit a springboard dropkick and Oscutter, which Shibata kicked out at one. Both up, trading lariats, but an Ospreay hook kick led to a backdrop suplex and wild forearm for two. Ospreay connected with the Storm Driver 93, as Shibata sat up and told Ospreay to bring it, which Ospreay did, connecting with Hidden Blade for the win. Post match, Ospreay showed respect, bowing to Shibata, who hugged Ospreay in return.
-A video package for the career of Bryan Danielson is shown, highlighting his time in Ring of Honor & New Japan Pro Wrestling before Excalibur talked about his career ending for three years. After making a comeback, his debut in AEW was shown, as Danielson said the final year of his career will be the greatest of his career. That continues at Dynasty against Will Ospreay.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Matthew & Nicholas Jackson, who said it was an ambush talking about Private Party beating them in one of the first episodes of Dynamite. Matthew said they returned to AEW to do certain things, retire Sting, restructure The Elite, bringing in Kazuchika Okada, but most importantly, getting their AEW Tag Team Titles back. The only way to right a wrong is by beating Private Party tonight, as Matthew said Paquette was doing a great job, but should smile more. They walk off with Nicholas asking where Alex Marvez was.

-Kazuchika Okada was shown arriving to the arena in his sports car, with the Continental Title in hand.
The Young Bucks (Matthew & Nicholas Jackson) defeated Private Party (Zay & Quen) to advance in the AEW Tag Team Title Tournament
(Aside from the messed up looking EVP Trigger finish, I enjoyed this match quite a bit, as they had nice call backs to the Private Party upset in the early Dynamite days. You knew The Bucks weren’t losing this; however, Zay & Quen did have their chances.)
Zay shrugged off a fist bump from Matthew, instead getting a quick series of near falls until Matthew ran through him with a back elbow. Quen made a blind tag before The Bucks got any double team going, as both Zay & Quen did stereo back flips into superkicks, leading to a double Tope. Matthew recovered and tried to send both Private Party over the guard rail, but it resulted in a Silly String by Zay. Nicholas & Quen both fought standing on the railing until Nicholas connected with a Falcon Arrow off it to a huge reaction, as Okada was shown backstage, nodding in approval. Zay helped Quen back in the ring at a nine count, but was met by a suplex into a back breaker. The Bucks would remain in control during picture in picture.
Zay finally broke up the offense, allowing Quen to hit a Side Effect into the double down, as Zay made the hot tag and ran wild. An enzugiri to Matthew while on the apron led to Zay hitting a moonsault on Nicholas on the outside. Springboard cross body back inside on Matthew got a near fall, as the crowd were chanting for Private Party. Zay missed a Twist of Fate, as The Bucks connected on an Avalanche Sliced Bread Powerbomb combo for two, which Quen broke up. Quen pulled his partner to their corner to make the tag, despite not fully recovering from the beating during commercial, as Nicholas hit a German suplex on the apron. The Bucks signaled for the Tony Khan Driver, but Zay held onto Nicholas and Quen rolled up Matthew for two, a call back to their first match. More Bang for Your Buck attempt missed, but Gin n’ Juice connected, as Zay & Quen followed up with More Bang for Your Buck of their own, only Nicholas broke up the count.
A frustrated Nicholas grabbed the ring bell, as Rick Knox took it away, allowing Matthew to hit a low blow. Quen flew in with a Tag Title belt shot, but Nicholas put his brother’s foot on the rope. Quen tried a 630, but crashed and burned, allowing The Bucks to try an EVP Trigger, only Nicholas slipped and got the exact chant you’d expect. It didn’t matter, as The Bucks both covered Quen and got the victory. Post match, Okada again showed his approval backstage.
-A video package on Konosuke Takeshita is shown ahead of tonight’s main event.
-Mercedes Mone is shown arriving to the arena, as up next, she’ll be on commentary for the women’s 4-way match.

-Darby Allin, on crutches, is at a skate park with Tony Hawk and talked about how he was supposed to climb Mount Everest for Hawk’s charity the Skate Park Project, but unfortunately broke his foot. Hawk talked about his charity and how to help out with the cause.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with HOOK & Chris Jericho, who talked about HOOK exceeding his expectations last week in their match. Jericho is fine being HOOK’s first pinfall win in AEW and put over HOOK’s skills. Jericho said after 33 years in this business, he’s willing to give HOOK advice to be a potential World Champion. HOOK thanked and accepted the advice, but reminds him, he’s Chris Jericho. Jericho said he knows who HOOK is and what he’s capable of being. Both men fist bump and I guess a mentorship is official.
Willow Nightingale defeated Skye Blue, Julia Hart & Kris Statlander to earn a TBS Title shot at AEW Dynasty
(Mone was asked who she would like to face in her AEW debut and she gave interest to basically everyone but Nightingale, who she seemingly ignored. Nightingale got the big win here, as I would not be surprised if she takes home the TBS Title at Dynasty and that title leads to her continued story with Mone. I’ve enjoyed how they’re playing off the history both of these two have with one another.)
We’re told Mercedes Mone is on commentary not to scout competition, but to try to help improve the women’s division. I’m not sure why it can’t be both, but alright. Anyways, credit Stokely Hathaway, who walked out with Nightingale, ran back up the ramp and came out with Statlander as well.
Match began with a series of quick pin attempts, as Blue was sent to the floor crashing onto Statlander, leaving it down to Jay & Nightingale in the ring, as a splash in the corner led to a charging low cross body for a Nightingale two. Blue broke things up with a quick DDT on Nightingale, but Statlander made the save with a sliding lariat, as Jay followed with a low neckbreaker. Statlander showed off her power, but Blue again put a stop to things on the outside, only to be launched by a Nightingale Pounce. A stare down between Nightingale & Mone took things to commercial.
Back from break, all four ladies went at it in the ring before Nightingale was tossed outside and Statlander ran wild on Jay & Blue, who was planted with a spinning Fisherman’s Driver for two. Statlander wanted a 450, but Jay cut her off with a superplex. Nightingale ran in and sandwiched both ladies with a senton, as Blue was nearly planted with a Doctor Bomb, but rolled through for two. Code Blue connected, but Statlander broke the count and hit a powerbomb back breaker. Jay came in and delivered a Gory Bomb on Statlander onto Blue, but only got two. Statlander avoided the Queen Slayer and sent Jay into a Nightingale shotgun dropkick, leaving Statlander & Nightingale facing off, but Blue put a stop to it. Blue hung up Nightingale in the ropes, wanted a suplex, but Nightingale instead hit a Death Valley Driver on the apron. Jay rolled through Wednesday Night Fever, sent Statlander packing, but Nightingale was there to hit a Doctor Bomb and get the win.
Julia Hart appeared immediately and laid out Nightingale with a TBS belt shot before staring down Mone, who left commentary. Hart bailed as Statlander & Hathaway checked on Nightingale, who officially gets a TBS Title shot at Dynasty.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Dustin Rhodes, who we’re told is 3-1 in 2024 and asks what is next for him? Rhodes said he’s started the year off with a bang, but right now, at 55 years old, he’s as passionate as he’s ever been. The Butcher walks in, Rhodes acts like he has bad breath and Butcher said it’s his mustache, it has its own musk. Butcher asks if Rhodes remembers their Bunkhouse Match from a few years back and said he has some receipts with his name on it and challenges Rhodes to a match on Rampage. Rhodes accepts, says he’s a Natural Born Legend and is loved in Canada and refuses to be a stepping stone.
-Video is shown of Timeless Toni Storm visiting the set of Turner Classic Movies and host Ben Mankiewicz, who congratulates Storm on being AEW World Champion and redefining the art of pro wrestling. Storm congratulates Mankiewicz on whatever he does and gets him to say Chin Up and Watch for The Shoe, as he refuses to say the Tits Out portion of the tag line.

-A video package for Swerve Strickland is shown ahead of tonight’s main event.
Orange Cassidy & Trent Beretta (w/Chuck Taylor) defeated The Undisputed Kingdom (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) to advance in the AEW Tag Team Title Tournament
(This was an action-packed tag match, as I wasn’t surprised at the result, with The Bucks advancing earlier tonight. Although, last week, Adam Cole said in his promo how it was Wardlow’s job to make sure The Kingdom keep winning. Wardlow was nowhere to be found tonight, so I guess his services are only needed to ROH Tag Team and International Title matches.)
Bell sounded and Cassidy just casually sauntered over to Taven on the apron and decked him with a punch. Taven immediately sent Cassidy into the steps, but was met with a Beretta dive. Bennett followed suit and flew in with a dive of his own, before Cassidy wiped out the pile with a dive off the top with both hands in his pockets. Back inside, Cassidy was dropped off the apron, but Beretta delivered rolling German suplexes on Taven, who fought off the third, forcing Beretta to his corner. Beretta fought back with a Meteora to Bennett, but Taven dropkicked out the leg, allowing Bennett to his a piledriver on the apron. Lots of moves on the apron tonight, as that’s what took things to picture in picture.
The Kingdom controlled during break, as Bennett connected on a nice spinebuster, but Beretta got the knees up on a Taven Lionsault, which led to a Cassidy hot tag. Cassidy connected on a top rope cross body on Taven, but while Bennett blocked the twisting DDT, Cassidy managed to pop off a Stundog Millionaire, only to eat a Taven charging knee. The Proton Pack connected for Taven & Bennett, but Cassidy kicked out at two. Taven wanted the Spike Piledriver, but was crotched by Beretta. The match broke down, as Beretta connected on a Tornado DDT, followed by Cassidy spinning DDT. Beretta delivered the charging knee strike, as Cassidy & Beretta wanted a hug, but Roderick Strong appeared and ran distraction, dropping Taylor. Cassidy wiped out Strong with a dive, as back inside, Taven tried the Spike Piledriver once more, but again, was crotched, this time by Taylor. Beretta got a jackknife on Bennett for the flash pin. Best Friends will now face The Young Bucks in the Semi-Finals next week, as The Bucks came to the stage to have a brief face off. They took their elevator entrance for 10 seconds before going right back down it, which was actually pretty hilarious.
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Kyle O’Reilly and congratulates him on his win over Bryan Keith on Collision a few weeks ago. O’Reilly said it felt good to pull that band-aid off after such a long time, but the AEW roster is stacked. Paquette asked if he’s rejoining Undisputed Kingdom and he said no, as he did it on his own against Bryan Keith, he’ll do it on his own again. O’Reilly said on Collision, he’ll once again prove he belongs.

-Highlights of Adam Copeland & Christian Cage’s I Quit Match from last week was shown and Copeland winning the TNT Title. The Cope-Open returns on Collision, this time with the TNT Title on the line.
Swerve Strickland (w/Prince Nana) defeated Konosuke Takeshita (w/Don Callis) to become #1 Contender for the AEW World Title
(Just an excellent main event for two of the best young stars AEW has to offer. These two built this match so well and reached another level after the final commercial break. I know Takeshita needs a big win, but this is Strickland’s time and has now earned his AEW Title shot at Dynasty. I wouldn’t be shocked if Strickland fulfils his destiny that night, despite Joe being a fantastic champion.)
A handshake seemed to start things, but neither let go and Strickland just stepped over into a headlock. Takeshita tried a whip to the ropes, but Strickland flipped out and applied a short arm scissors, which was applied much quicker than last week in his match with The Butcher. Takeshtia escaped and fired off a Takeshita-line as Samoa Joe is shown watching backstage. Strickland responded with an uppercut off the second to the back and hanging neckbreaker through the ropes. Both men slugged it out before Strickland delivered a nice back breaker, but a quick counter into a brainbuster put Takeshita in back control. Takeshita refused to allow the ref to give Strickland time to recover and fired off more forearms, with Strickland clutching his neck. Strickland tried a snap bounce back German suplex, but Takeshita no sold and sent Strickland outside with a violent forearm, taking things to commercial.
Takeshita worked over the neck and arm during break, as Strickland tried to start a forearm exchange and suffered as a result, as Takeshita connected on more, but was sent outside. Strickland got enough of a hurricanrana from the ring to the floor, as back inside a top rope cross body only managed a one count. Strickland tried for a combo of strikes, but his neck gave out and Takeshita hit a home run forearm that crumbled Strickland. Takeshita blocked a rolling Flatliner attempt into a Fireman’s Carry Facebuster, charging knee and somersault dive on the floor. Back inside, Takeshita wanted the violent corner brainbuster he hit on Will Ospreay at Revolution, but thankfully Strickland fought out, trapped Takeshita in the corner and hit a hanging DDT. Sky Twister Press connected with ease for Strickland, but Takeshita kicked out.
Takeshita fought out of Big Pressure with a Poison Rana into a Blue Thunder Bomb for a close near fall. Takeshita took too long to capitalize, allowing Strickland to fire off a straight right hand, tried the rolling Flatliner again, this time Takeshita hit a pump knee in mid-air. Strickland didn’t manage to stay down long, as he finally hit the rolling Flatliner, dropping Takeshita on his head. Strickland connected on the Swerve Stomp on the apron, as back inside, Strickland tried another Stomp, but Takeshita countered into a powerbomb. A crazy series of counters led to Takeshita avoiding Big Pressure into the wheelbarrow German and Power Drive Knee, but Strickland barely managed a shoulder up. Takeshita wanted an Avalanche Blue Thunder Bomb, but Strickland fought out, delivered House Call and Swerve Stomp, but Takeshita kicked out. Strickland couldn’t believe it, as both men traded a pop-up head butt and jumping knee, but Strickland fired up with a standing Swerve Stomp and Big Pressure for the victory.
A visibly upset Samoa Joe was approached by Renee Paquette, asking how he feels after Strickland’s win. Joe said it’s baffling this is a man celebrating the biggest fate he’s ever going to catch in his life. When Strickland walks to the ring next week and signs on the dotted line, Joe will make him realize just what he’s asking for. Joe said Strickland isn’t ready, he’s not that man. Strickland is shown celebrating in the ring, making the motion he’s the next champ.
