Josh Alexander undergoes surgery after AEW knee injury

Josh Alexander has undergone surgery for the knee injury he suffered last month on AEW Collision.

Alexander was injured while competing in a trios match that was taped for Collision on March 18. After limping around for a week, Alexander got bad news last Friday when it was confirmed that the injury was “pretty severe” and he would need to undergo surgery. That operation has now been successfully completed.

In the match where he got hurt, Alexander, Konosuke Takeshita & El Clon lost to AEW Trios Champions Mistico, Kevin Knight & “Speedball” Mike Bailey. The Don Callis Family will have another chance to claim the titles when El Clon, Hechicero & Volador Jr. challenge the champions at a CMLL event this Friday night.

The injury meant Alexander was not able to compete at Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling’s events in Canada last weekend, which included a co-promoted Global Wars card with Ring of Honor. The weekend saw Stu Grayson crowned the interim MLP Canadian Champion with Alexander — the regular title holder — facing an extended absence.

This month marks the one-year anniversary of Alexander’s AEW debut. He was a World Champion for TNA Wrestling before joining the AEW roster.

Interim Canadian Men’s Champion to be crowned at MLP Uprising

Update:

Michael Oku has been announced as replacing Steve Maclin in the match.

Original

An interim MLP Canadian Men’s Champion will be crowned on Saturday.

Former champion Josh Alexander recently revealed that he is set to undergo knee surgery after suffering an injury at the March 18 AEW Collision taping. At ROH x MLP Global Wars Canada, a six-person match was announced featuring Jonathan Gresham vs. Psycho Mike vs. Rich Swann vs. Stu Grayson vs. Rohan Raja vs. Steve Maclin.

However, Maclin is believed to have suffered a concussion in the main event of TNA Sacrifice on Friday in a match against Mike Santana.

Also announced for Saturday’s MLP pay-per-view from St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Gisele Shaw will defend the MLP Canadian Women’s Championship against Deonna Purrazzo. The match comes after Purrazzo successfully retained the ROH Women’s Pure Championship against Shaw at Global Wars.

MLP Uprising announced matches:

  • Interim MLP Canadian Men’s Championship six-way match: Jonathan Gresham vs. Psycho Mike vs. Rich Swann vs. Stu Grayson vs. Rohan Raja vs. Michael Oku
  • MLP Canadian Women’s Champion Gisele Shaw defends against Deonna Purrazzo
  • Bishop Dyer vs. Kaito Kiyomiya

Friday Update

— Garrett Gonzales and I are doing our Observer rundown and week in review show later this afternoon. The weekend show with Bryan will be Sunday night this week.

— A very good article with Bob Arum saying what is wrong with the new version of the Ali Act that just passed through the House of Representatives with almost no debate.

— Josh Alexander got the word today that the damage to his knee suffered in the trios title match from Fresno that aired on Sunday was severe enough that he will need major surgery, which takes place Wednesday. There is no time frame for how long he’ll be out of action until after the surgery, but it will be many months.

— AEW Dynamite on Wednesday night did 765,000 viewers and an 0.14 in 18-49. This is even more impressive since the show was expected to take a hit against the New York Yankees vs. San Francisco Giants baseball game head-to-head on Netflix. The show was headlined by Kenny Omega vs. Swerve Strickland to get a title shot at MJF. It is the most viewers for an AEW television show since the show that had the 2024 Blood & Guts match. That was prior to HBO MAX airing the show, so it’s likely this was the most viewers the show has had in several years.

— SmackDown tonight is from Pittsburgh with Giulia vs. Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss vs. the Bella Twins and Kit Wilson vs. Jelly Roll. There were 10,745 tickets out for the show as of earlier today.

— A correction from today’s issue of the Observer. The AEW note regarding Spring BreakThru week and Playoff Palooza is incorrect. Shows in April will not be using those names.

— Orlando Weit, Muay Thai fighter who competed in UFC 2 in 1994, passed away on 3/20 at the age of 60. UFC 2 was on March 11, 1994, and they had a 16 man tournament. Weit won his first fight with devastating knees over Robert Lucraelli, but then lost in just 1:29 to judoka Remco Pardoel

— TNA Sacrifice is tonight from New Orleans:

  • Mike Santana vs Steve Maclin for TNA title
  • Leon Slater vs. Eric Young for X title
  • Arianna Grace vs Lei Ying Lee vs. Dani Luna for Knockouts title
  • Eddie Edwards vs Moose
  • Jeff Hardy & Vincent vs. Cedric Alexander & Briain Myers
  • Mustafa Ali & Tasha Steez vs. Trey Miguel & Jada Stone
  • Elijah & Home Town Man vs. AJ Francis & Frankie Kazarian
  • Mara Sade vs Eleyna Black no DQ
  • Tessa Blanchard vs. Jody Threat
  • BDE vs. Ryan Nemeth
  • As of earlier today they had 1,195 tickets out for the show.

— Arena Mexico tonight has Atlantis Jr. & Esfinge & Neon vs. Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja & Soberano Jr in the main event, plus Averno & Mephisto vs. Templario & Flip Gordon.

— As for the updated odds for WrestleMania, Roman Reigns remains a -500 favorite over CM Punk at +300 in the World Heavyweight Championship match. That line has not moved this week. Josh Alexander to undergo surgery after ‘pretty severe’ AEW injury

Josh Alexander has shared some unfortunate news after suffering an injury at a recent AEW Collision taping.

While competing in a trios match on March 18, Alexander sustained a knee injury and had to be helped to the back. He gave an update on the situation today and revealed that he was just told that he’ll need to undergo surgery. Alexander said there is no timetable right now for when he’ll be back in the ring.

“I just found out minutes ago how serious this was,” Alexander said. “I know I’ve been limping and in pain for a week, but my surgeon told me I’m going to need surgery this coming Wednesday, that my knee injury is pretty severe. So I will not be cleared to compete and there’s no timetable set right now for when I will be back.”

The injury means Alexander — the Maple Leaf Pro Canadian Champion — has been pulled from the cards for MLP’s events in Windsor this weekend. That includes tonight’s co-promoted MLP & ROH Global Wars show. Alexander was really looking forward to defending his title and would have wrestled on one leg if he were allowed to.

Alexander and his Don Callis Family stablemates Konosuke Takeshita & El Clon were challenging Mistico, Kevin Knight & “Speedball” Mike Bailey for the AEW Trios titles in the match where Alexander’s injury happened. It aired on the March 22 episode of Collision with Mistico submitting El Clon to retain.

A former World Champion for TNA, Alexander has been with AEW for nearly a year now after debuting in April 2025.

Update on Josh Alexander injury at AEW Collision taping

Dave Meltzer addressed the injury to Josh Alexander in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Alexander was helped to the back following a knee injury during the AEW Collision taping in Fresno on Wednesday during the World Trios title match.

Meltzer wrote in the March 23, 2026 edition of the newsletter that the full extent of the injury is not yet known. However, Alexander’s knee has been bothering him for several years, and he had been aware that it would need to be addressed at some point.

Meltzer wrote:

“At press time, the knee had not been checked out completely so we don’t yet know the extent of the damage. The knee has been bothering him for six years and he kind of knew that at some point he’d have to take care of it, and it appears now is that point.”

Meltzer and Garrett Gonzales also discussed the situation on Friday’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio.

Meltzer said:

“As of yesterday he had not gotten word on the severity of it, so we don’t know yet. Hopefully it’s not too bad, but he’s been working with a bad knee for six years, and I think that he kind of knew that at some point this would probably happen.”

“The wear and tear when you work that style, you’re going to get injuries, and hopefully it’s not bad. Hopefully he doesn’t need surgery or anything and he’s not out for long, but we don’t know the answer yet.”

In addition to his AEW schedule, Alexander had been scheduled for the Ring of Honor and Maple Leaf Pro’s Global Wars shows in Windsor, Ontario, on March 27 and 28. Alexander is the reigning MLP champion and most recently defended the title against Esfinge at Arena Mexico on February 20.

The match in which Alexander was injured is scheduled to air on Sunday’s episode of Slam Dunk Collision.

AEW wrestler helped to back after apparent injury at Collision taping

Josh Alexander appears to have suffered an injury.

Following AEW Dynamite on Wednesday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, matches for this weekend’s Slam Dunk Collision episodes were taped. Alexander teamed with El Clon and Konosuke Takeshita in a World Trios title match against Kevin Knight, Mike Bailey, and Mistico.

According to reports from those in attendance, Alexander was helped to the back during the match after suffering an apparent knee injury.

There has been no confirmation of the injury at this time.

In addition to this weekend’s episode of Collision, Alexander is also scheduled to appear at the Ring of Honor and Maple Leaf Pro Global Wars event in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on March 27 and 28. Alexander is the current MLP Champion and most recently defended the title against Esfinge at Arena Mexico on February 20.

Spoilers from last night’s Collision tapings are available here.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • WWE uploaded the full triple threat tag match that headlined NXT last night, which saw Sol Ruca & Zaria defeat Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid and Kendal Grey & Wren Sinclair to become the number one contenders to the TNA Knockouts Tag Team titles.
  • WWE filed a trademark application for the name “Royce Keys” on January 20.
  • On What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, The Undertaker was asked if he’s enjoyed hosting his own Six Feet Under podcast:
    • It has its moments. Yeah, it really does. When you’re in a discussion or you’re in a conversation and you’re hitting it off, that’s always fun. But, man, sometimes when you get that guest that doesn’t want to talk or is not a storyteller, right? I don’t want to name names, but it can be like pulling a tooth.
  • Undertaker announced that Rhodes will be a future guest on Six Feet Under.
  • R-Truth sent out a message thanking everyone for how they’ve responded to the new season of WWE Unreal:
    • Thank you to each and everyone of you WORLD WIDE! I don’t call you fans anymore, You all are my family. I really appreciate ALL of you more than you’ll ever know.
  • CM Punk & AJ Styles teamed up at WWE’s house show in Brussels yesterday, defeating Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed.
  • Booker T spoke to The Takedown on SI about his willingness to help younger talent:
    • I always tell the young guys, if you want some help, I’ll be right over here. I got a little cubby hole and I got a little spot, a little office. Sometimes I show up to work and I have two guys, three guys, a girl, sitting there waiting on me. We’ll break it down … really go into self interrogation mode, ask ourselves serious questions.
    • It’s mostly going to be ‘what not to dos’ and working with these kids and really getting down to the meat and potatoes of being able to beat someone up poetically. That’s all it is. If you could do that, we can make a whole lot of money.

Other Wrestling

  • Josh Alexander appeared on the Battleground Podcast ahead of his match against Kenny Omega on Dynamite tonight.
  • During the interview, Alexander was asked if he would like to see his wife Jade Chung and friend Scott D’Amore have a role in AEW/ROH:
    • I would absolutely love to see that. I mean, Scott’s one thing. He might take offense more if I said no to that than my wife.
    • My wife first and foremost, she changed her whole career from a wrestling manager into being a ring announcer just because [TNA] asked her to try it. She was worried about it, but she’s like, ‘I’ll give it a try, I’ve never done it, we’ll see.’ She went to voice lessons for a year, and she’s still going to this day, even though she’s not doing it anymore.
    • But she did all this hard work. And I think the hard work showed in what she was able to do as a ring announcer. Like, she was getting praise from a lot of people from around the industry that have been in the industry for a very long time.
    • So I think it’d be a terrible waste of her talents to not see her do what she now loves to do and is now confident in doing at a bigger company. AEW would be a very good place for that.
    • Scott D’Amore, the man has helped me more than anybody else in wrestling history. He saw something in me when a lot of people didn’t, gave me an opportunity when a lot of people didn’t. And the only reason I’m sitting here in this house that I’m able to put over my children’s heads is because of Scott D’Amore giving me those opportunities and me making the best of them. So I owe that guy so much, and I would love to see him anywhere.
  • WDW News Today has an interview with MJF.
  • Alec Price told Undisputed that he and Jordan Oliver are out to prove they’re the best tag team in the world now that they’ve signed with AEW:
    • This is our time. [MJF] was part of the last generation of indie talent, then me and Jordan and our generation held the indies strong. Now it’s all about a new challenge. Me and Jordan aren’t going to squander this opportunity. We’re the best tag team in the world, and we’re going to show it.
  • In an interview with NJPW’s English-language website, Yota Tsuji reacted to Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement match:
    • I hit the showers when I got to the back and I was icing my neck while I checked it out. Tanahashi’s incredible. Those cheers at that volume from that many people without stopping, it just hit home how much he means to wrestling. Tanahashi that day was like the ultimate final form of a pro-wrestler. And you know, the match was great. Some emotion just boiled over toward the end there (laughs).
  • Tsuji noted that he wants his IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship defense against Gabe Kidd or Andrade El Idolo to take place overseas. Those two are facing each other in a number one contender’s match at the New Beginning in Osaka on February 11.
    • I’d like to do it overseas. If it happens to be Andrade then it’s a new international name to me to face, and if it’s Gabe then it will be a chance to show the best of NJPW to a foreign audience, so it’ll be cool either way.
  • All three members of former WWE faction Gallus will be debuting for MLW in Kissimmee, Florida on January 29, with Wolfgang joining Joe Coffey and Mark Coffey among the confirmed entrants for the 40-man Battle Riot match.
  • Elayna Black (the former Cora Jade) revealed that she is dating fellow TNA wrestler KC Navarro.
  • Limitless Wrestling’s YouTube channel uploaded the full Eddie Kingston & Ortiz vs. Anthony Greene & Channing Thomas tag match from last week.
  • “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, The Great Sasuke, Gangrel, and Jordan Oliver & Alec Price will be taking part in Joey Janela’s Boat Bash 2027.

Josh Alexander ‘very excited’ for Kenny Omega AEW dream match

Tonight’s AEW Dynamite will be a dream come true for Josh Alexander.

For the first time ever in a singles match, Alexander faces off with Kenny Omega on Dynamite from Orlando, Florida. It’s a matchup that Alexander has wanted for a long time. Just the possibility of facing Omega is one of the reasons that Alexander decided to sign with AEW during free agency.

“I mean, I’m very excited. This is one of the reasons why I came to AEW,” Alexander told Busted Open Radio ahead of Dynamite. “I’ve been chasing this match for the past 10 years. It’s been something that’s been on whatever you want to say — my dream match list, my bucket list. Someone I’ve had a bunch of respect for. I’ve followed his career from DDT through New Japan, everything he’s done. Like, I was at Ring of Honor shows in Markham, Ontario watching this guy wrestle in the early 2010s and stuff like that. I think he’s been amazing.

“And as a Canadian wrestler, I look at other Canadian wrestlers as I’m following their footsteps. I idolize the Bret Harts, the Owens, all these people, the Edges, the Christians. And I think Kenny Omega is just another in that lineage of great Canadian wrestlers that have gone out into the world and made a name for themselves. Now I’m doing the same. I gotta walk in those footsteps and I gotta walk right through him. And tonight I finally get my opportunity, so I’m psyched.”

Alexander, a former TNA World Champion, debuted for AEW in April 2025. He told Busted Open that he’s loving his time in AEW. It’s similar to TNA for him, except for being a bigger production with a wider travel schedule. There was a bit of an adjustment period switching locker rooms, but Alexander has made friends with his new co-workers.

“It’s good to be figured in. I love the new opponents,” Alexander said before noting that he was caught off guard by how much of the audience wasn’t familiar with him before he debuted in AEW. With that new audience, Alexander has enjoyed showing them that he can excel at promos in addition to wrestling in the ring.

Alexander plays a heel in AEW as a member of the Don Callis Family. He noted that Callis should be on commentary for his match against Omega tonight.

Continental title eliminator match set for AEW Dynamtie New Year’s Smash

A title eliminator match is set for Wednesday.

The final AEW Dynamite of 2025 will see Jon Moxley face off against Josh Alexander. If the latter is able to defeat Moxley or even make it to the twenty-minute time limit, he’ll earn a future Continental Championship match.

“After Mox won the 2025 C2, he’ll fight Josh Alexander in a Continental Eliminator: no outside interference, Alexander can earn a future title shot with a win or lasting the 20 minute time limit!” Khan wrote.

Moxley emerged as the winner of the 2025 Continental Classic this past Saturday after defeating Kyle Fletcher in the semifinals and Kazuchika Okada in the finals of the touranment at AEW Worlds End. After defeating Okada, he was awarded the Continental title as he cut a promo thanking not only those who competed in the tournament but also the fans, saying it was a championship not just for himself but also for them.

AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash (December 31)

  • TBS Championship: Mercedes Mone defends against Willow Nightingale
  • AEW Continental title eliminator: Jon Moxley vs. Josh Alexander
  • AEW National Championship: Ricochet defends against Jack Perry
  • MJF will speak

**********

AEW Collision opened with a recap of Samoa Joe and Eddie Kingston and Hangman Page & Swerve Strickland vs. Shibata & Will Hobbs, with Hangman making his intentions clear – he wants Samoa Joe at AEW World’s End.

Swerve Strickland (w/ Prince Nana) vs. Josh Alexander (w/ Don Callis)

The crowd was immediately red hot, cheering for Swerve and singing for him. Alexander tried to hit a shoulder tackle on Swerve, but he just shook it off. Alexander went for a leg pick, but Swerve cartwheeled over it and hit a fireman’s carry into the top turnbuckle before hitting a pump kick that drove Alexander into the corner.
