Parking lot brawl set for next AEW Collision

The Rascalz are set to team with Eddie Kingston & Ortiz to take on The Grizzled Young Veterans and Big Bill and Bryan Keith on next week’s AEW Collision.

After The Rascalz secured a victory over CRU in their debut on Saturday’s Collision, they found themselves in a backstage segment with Kingston and Ortiz.

This occurred after a previous face-to-face between Kingston & Ortiz and the Grizzled Young Veterans which had a no-physicality rule. The Veterans found a loophole, however, and got Big Bill and Bryan Keith to attack Kingston and Ortiz instead.

This led to Kingston calling out the four men involved and challenging them to an eight-man parking lot brawl on next week’s Collision that will be taped this Wednesday in Las Vegas.

“Grizzled Young Vets, I know you are not done with these boys either. I know there’s a history there. Bill, Keith, y’all wanna play in the parking lot? You wanna fight? You want to jump us? Saturday, Collision, eight-man tag-team war in the parking lot,” Kingston said.

It was the only match announced for Collision.

Eddie Kingston vs. Zack Gibson added to AEW Worlds End Zero Hour

AEW has announced a match between Kingston and Zack Gibson to their Zero Hour show leading into the World’s End pay per view on Saturday.

Kingston’s issues with the GYVs began shortly after his AEW championship loss to Samoa Joe at Dynamite: Winter is Coming on December 10. The Vets were in Nathan Cruz’s corner for his loss to Kingston on December 17. Kingston then defeated James Drake at Ring of Honor’s Boxing Day Brawl in a match taped a few days earlier. Gibson attacked Kingston after his victory over Drake, setting up the Zero Hour match.

One other match has been announced for Zero Hour: Hyan & Maya World will team up to face the Sisters of Sin.

Hailing from the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Zero Hour will be available on YouTube on at 7 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Pacific on December 27.

Ring of Honor TV live results: Eight-man tag team match

Tonight’s Ring of Honor on HonorClub will see former ROH Women’s World Champion Deonna Purrazzo in Pure rules action in addition to an eight-man tag team match.

Purrazzo will take on the returning Marti Belle under the unique set of rules as the impending Women’s Pure title tournament awaits.

In the eight-man match, The Infantry will team with the Grizzled Young Veterans against former ROH Tag Team Champions The Kingdom & Top Flight.

Miyu Yamashita will also be in ROH action for the first time since April 2023 when she takes on the Nightmare Factory trained Brooke Havok.

Shane Taylor & Lee Moriarty will team up against Anthony Gangone & Sal Mistretta while Lance Archer goes one-on-one with Aaron Solo to round out the show.

**********

Ring of Honor on Honorclub number 121 is here and as a dear friend of mine used to say “Hey, let’s fight!!”

Shane Taylor Promotions (Lee Moriarty & Shane Taylor) vs Anthony Gangone & Sal Mistretta

Shane Taylor Promotions as a group are pretty much unstoppable at this point. They have the talent, the aggression and the ability to back up any and all smack talk. As for their opponents tonight, Gangone has one other ROH appearance as part of a team that lost to the horribly named LEEJ (EJ Nduka & Lee Johnson) last year. Mistretta has only two years in the business and has been described as “sturdy.”

Right off the bat, Moriarty laid out Gangone with a high knee to the face. From there he tagged in Taylor who gleefully took on Mistretta. Mistretta got a little too excited and managed to punch Taylor in the face. That did not make the much bigger Taylor happy, so he picked up Mistretta and threw him at the ground in an aggressive chokeslam. Then he did it again for good measure.

Gangone tried to help out his partner, but Moriarty intercepted him and locked in a Border City Stretch. Taylor, the legal man, punched Mistretta in the face and pinned him, 1-2-3.

Match Result: Shane Taylor Promotions (Lee Moriarty & Shane Taylor) defeat Anthony Gangone & Sal Mistretta

A fun squash off the top. I love Shane Taylor and STP, but after the match taylor proclaimed “We’re coming for everything!” But, I wish he’d hurry up, because he’s been saying that for the better part of a year.

Pure Rules Match: Deonna Purrazzo vs Marti Belle

What a great way to tee-up the tournament to crown the first ever Ring of Honor Women’s Pure Champion! Purazzo feels like the title was made for her and Belle is the current EMERGE Women’s Champion, so she’s no slouch as well. For those not in the know a Pure Rules Match has a 10 minute time limit. Wrestlers are allowed only three rope breaks and one closed fist warning. Outside interference results in an instant DQ.

Purrazzo and Belle locked up off the top and traded wrist and chin locks. Purrazzo powered out of it first with a hard shoulder, knocking Belle down. Purrazzo sent Belle to the corner, where she bailed out of the ring. Purrazo went for a baseball slide, but Belle was waiting and the two exchanged what appeared to be very closed fists, but the Ref let it go.

Purrazzo sent Belle into the steps and rolled back into the ring. Belle staggered up and just beat the count out. Purrazzo worked over the arm of Belle, but left herself open for a quick rollup that got a two count. Purrazzo sent Belle to the match and wrenched her arm again.

Purrazzo, in total control, locked in a disarmer into a venus de milo hold, preventing Belle from reaching the ropes. Belle tapped out to end the match.

Match Result: Deonna Purrazzo defeats Marti Belle

That was…fun? I guess? I can’t remember a Pure Rules Match where no rope breaks were used, but if you’re going to have a Pure Squash, I guess Deonna Purrazzo is a pretty good person to have it with!

-Next, The Frat House cut a “promo” from the back about how they don’t like the Dark Order. Vance hates them all, Jameson mentioned a small package and then yelled Boooooooooze before they all left. It was… underwhelming.

Lance Archer vs Aaron Solo

Usually when Archer comes to ROH these days, it’s to quickly murder an unsuspecting up-and-comer. Tonight though, he faces Solo who’s been on a hot streak, having a string of really great matches in ROH and AEW. So Solo might be a tougher match for the much larger Archer.

Solo tried to get the jump on Archer, kicking his legs before the bell even rang. Archer returned the favor though, sending Solo staggering. Solo tried to power back, but there’s only one winner in a power-match against Archer and Solo was sent flying.

Solo did not give up though, trying again until Archer threw him into the corner and laid him out. Solo tried to escape up the ring post, but that just put him in position for a Blackout and Archer got the quick win.

Match Result: Lance Archer defeats Aaron Solo

Third squash in a row, which I don’t really mind. I like Archer, I like Solo, I’d have liked to see them work a bit longer, but what can you do?

Miyu Yamashita vs Brooke Havok

The last time we saw Yamashita in ROH, it was back in 2023 against ROH Women’s Champion Athena, back when she was only the “maybe forever?” champion. It was a losing effort for Yamashita but she’s been working the indies and AEW ever since. Havok also faced Athena in 2023, but lost in less than 2 minutes. She’s been better since then, but has yet to win a match in Ring of Honor.

The two tied up off the top, with Yamashita getting the upper hand due to her size advantage. She controlled the pace until Havok got a headlock and spun her around for a big dropkick. Havok started giving Billie Starkz a run for her money and bratted around the ring. That infuriated Yamashita, who clocked her from behind.

Havok fought back, returning fire with elbows and forearms, followed by a neckbreaker and a senton bomb. Yamashita was stunned, but managed to dodge Havok and plant a springboard rewind kick. She picked up Havok, but Havok wiggled free and delivered some kicks.

Havok went for a headscissor, but Yamashita caught her and delivered a brutal whipping kick, that knocked Havok down and gave Yamashita the pin.

Match Result: Miyu Yamashita defeats Brooke Havok

Fun match, Havok looked really good. Again, surprised by the quickness but I wouldn’t call this a squash as the back and forth was pretty even handed.

-In the back, Mark Sterling was watching footage of a Premier Athletes match. Due to ringside “assaults on a consultant” (aka him), Sterling has had most of the Athletes matches thrown out. So, by default, they are undefeated in 2025. They then talked about their shirts and declared their intentions to go after the ROH Tag Titles.

Top Flight (Dante Martin & Darius Martin) & The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) vs  The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean) & Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson)

Eight men, from four teams, teaming together on two teams, to beat the heck out of each other. The Grizzled Young Veterans haven’t been around ROH in a spell and The Kingdom have popped in and out over the last few months. The Infantry has been causing trouble with Shane Taylor Promotions and Top Flight have been flying high, so to speak.

The Grizzled Infantry jumped their opponents off the top and all eight men brawled in the ring. When the dust cleared, Top Kingdom had cleared the ring leaving Darius and Drake as the legal men. Things settled down after that, with Taven tagging in to send Drake to the ground with a dropkick.

Gibson grabbed Taven’s ankles and dragged him outside the ring where Drake tossed him into the barricade before choking him on the ring apron (the chokiest part of the ring!). Gibson tried to keep Taven from making a tag, but it took Drake tagging back in to stop it.

Bravo tagged in and he and Dean double teamed Taven, isolating him in the corner. They hung him up in the tree of woe and everyone took turns wailing on him until the Infantry hit a double dropkick. It wasn’t enough though as Taven kicked out at two.

Taven finally made a hot tag to Darious and he and Dean threw hands in the center of the ring. Darius cleaned house, going for a pin until Gibson broke it up. Duante came in with a springboard splash to help his brother then tagged in Bennett who stacked up Bravo, Gibson and Drake in the corner and chopped them all.

Bravo tried an underhook facebuster on Duante, but it wasn’t enough and Darius broke it up. Bennett hit a spiccoli driver on dean followed by a knee from Taven. Taven then dove out of the ring, taking out Gibson, Drake and Bravo. The Infantry hit a Boot Camp on Darious, but he was able to kick out at two.

Dean and Darius found themselves the legal men and Darius hit a fisherman suplex. Duante tagged in for a big frog splash and pinned Dean in the middle of the ring.

Match Result: Top Flight (Dante Martin & Darius Martin) & The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) defeat The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean) & Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson)

Really great main event. I like all these teams and they, along with the Premier Athletes all have legit claims to being #1 Contenders for the ROH Tag Titles currently held by the Sons of Texas. Looking forward to seeing how the division shapes up heading into Supercard of Honor in less than a month!

Paragon vs. Grizzled Young Veterans set for Thursday’s AEW Collision on TBS

Once again, AEW Collision is moving to another day and network.

Following a confrontation between the two teams, it was announced that Paragon (Roderick Strong and Kyle O’Reilly) will face Grizzled Young Veterans this Thursday on AEW Collision, which will air on TBS. The show is being preempted from its normal time slot due to NHL coverage and would have also gone head-to-head with WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Adam Cole was talking about having a target behind his back when Grizzled Young Veterans confronted the trio, challenging Strong and O’Reilly to a match. They also told Cole to be at ringside so he could see his teammates lose. The challenge was accepted for next week in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Collision’s timeslot has changed several times in the last few weeks due to NHL and NBA coverage. It will change even more next month when AEW airs both of their shows in back-to-back four hour blocks for their upcoming Summer Blockbuster and Fyter Fest events.

The updated card for next week’s Collision:

AEW Dynamite, Thursday, May 22 on TBS —

  • Paragon vs. Grizzled Young Veterans

Grizzled Young Veterans on WWE departure: ‘We bet on ourselves’

The Grizzled Young Veterans spoke to The Takedown on SI.com ahead of tonight’s NJPW Strong Style Evolved.

It’s been fourteen months since James Drake and Zack Gibson were granted their releases from WWE. In that time, they’ve wrestled for AEW, NJPW, TNA Wrestling, and several other promotions. They are the current NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Champions and will defend those titles tonight against The West Coast Wrecking Crew (Jorel Nelson & Royce Isaacs).

When reflecting on the last year, the GYV say they have no hard feelings toward WWE and feel they wouldn’t be where they are today without the company.

“So first and foremost, we absolutely loved the WWE, we loved them, we love AEW, we love every wrestling promotion we ever worked for,” said Drake.

“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for WWE, we got to go in back in 2016 when we were in the UK. But saying that, things change and time goes on. And we’re, it’s the name ‘Grizzled Young Veterans’ but we’re not as young as we were. As time’s going on and we’re looking at the climate of the wrestling world how things are booming in other areas, well I can speak on my half and I’m sure Zack’s the same, at the end of the day, one of these days, we’re not gonna be able to do this anymore.”

“I think we’re gonna be in the wrestling business for the rest of our lives because we’ve committed 20 years into it so far, but physically, you know that is a ticking clock, it’s running down, you know as it respects to other careers,” Drake continued. “So whilst we’re young, whilst we’re in a situation where we could do it, we wanted to really bet on ourselves and experience the whole world of wrestling, not just WWE.”

Gibson added, “The list of companies that you said there, Ring of Honor, AEW, TNA, New Japan, that’s all in the space of 12 months and we’ve only been afforded that opportunity because we did say the time’s now, let’s go.”

“And then the proof’s in the pudding, our stock which was the thing we were most concerned with, is back on the rise, going in that direction again, so it’s all coming up Milhouse.”

Drake and Gibson defeated TMDK’s Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste last month to win the NJPW Strong tag titles at Fighting Spirit Unleashed in Lowell, MA. Tonight will be their first defense of the belts. They’ve also been wrestling on recent episodes of HonorClub, defeating MXM Collection on the December 12 episode (taped December 7).

“West Coast Wrecking Crew, there’s no doubt they’re the top team. Everyone around the world knows they are a top team, we appreciate they’re a top team,” Gibson said of their opponents tonight. “We’ve watched a lot of their stuff, so this is a match that we’ve requested multiple times, like people have messaged them on all different platforms asking to see this match.”

“Yeah so I mean like you said you could argue they are the face of the tag team division, but I mean the face of the tag team division are the champions, that’s just the way it is, you know. They want to be the face, but unfortunately that’s not the case,” Drake said.

NJPW Strong Style Evolved, Sunday, December 15, 7:30 p.m. Eastern time at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, CA and airing on NJPW World —

Grizzled Young Vets win Strong Tag Team titles at NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed

The Grizzled Young Vets are new champions.

James Drake and Zack Gibson defeated TMDK (Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls) to capture the titles Friday at NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed. GYV won the titles after Haste was choked out by a towel and was given the high low for the win.

TMDK had held the titles since June, when they defeated Bishimon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI), Chase Owens & KENTA, and Hikuleo & El Phantasmo at Dominion to capture both the Strong titles and the IWGP Tag Team titles. They lost the former titles only days ago at Power Struggle, where the United Empire (Great-O-Khan and Henare) defeated them to win the titles.

GYV recently made their AEW debut back in April shortly following a run in TNA. Since then, the team has mainly worked on AEW Collision and Ring of Honor. They also participated in a number one contenders match at NJPW Capital Collision in August, losing to Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii in a three-way match that also involved Bad Dude Tito and Robbie Eagles.

Grizzled Young Veterans issue challenge for NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed

The Grizzled Young Veterans have issued a challenge for NJPW Fighting Spiriting Unleashed.

At today’s NJPW Royal Quest event, Zack Gibson and James Drake appeared via video and stated they want a shot at the Strong Tag Team Championships on the November 8 pay-per-view in Lowell, Massachusetts.

After the video aired, TMDK’s Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste successfully defended the Strong tag titles against Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tomohiro Ishii. However, NJPW has yet to make the match between GYV and TMDK official for Lowell.

Haste & Nicholls also hold the IWGP World Heavyweight Tag Team Championships. They are scheduled to defend those titles at NJPW Power Struggle on Monday, November 4, 2024, against HENARE and Great-O-Khan.

NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed announced lineup for Friday, November 8, 2024 —

  • NJPW Strong Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd defends against Kosei Fujita
  • Four-way number one contender’s match: Anna Jay vs. TBD vs. TBD vs. TBD (winner gets next shot at NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Mercedes Mone)
  • KENTA vs. Ryohei Oiwa
  • David Finlay vs. Kevin Knight
  • Mustafa Ali vs. Lio Rush

All star 10-man tag team match signed for AEW Collision

The first match for this Saturday’s AEW Collision is official, featuring ten men who are looking to fight each other as soon as possible.

FTW Champion Hook will join with FTR & The Outrunners against the Grizzled Young Veterans, Roderick Strong, The Beast Mortos and the returning Rush.

FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) took on the team of James Drake & Zack Gibson on last Saturday’s Collision, picking up the victory. After the win, GYV immediately attacked FTR and were prevented from doing further damage by The Outrunners (Turbo Floyd & Truth Magnum).

The other storyline wrinkle for Saturday is that Strong will challenge Hook for his ceremonial title on part of next Wednesday’s Grand Slam event from Queens, New York.

This will be Rush’s first AEW action since a mid-August tag team win alongside Kyle Fletcher.

This Saturday’s Collision emanates from Springfield, Massachussetts, and will be followed by a taping of Rampage for the following Friday.

AEW Collision live results: FTR vs. Grizzled Young Veterans

A long-awaited match between FTR and Grizzled Young Veterans is set for tonight’s AEW Collision.

The feud between the two teams dates back to All In when GYV made their AEW return by jumping FTR after failing to capture the Tag Team titles from the Young Bucks.

TNT Champion Jack Perry will put the title up against Christopher Daniels who answered Perry’s open challenge during Rampage. He said while he is still an interim EVP, he is still a wrestler at heart.

Yuka Sakazaki, who has been out of action with injury, will make her return to take on Serena Deeb.

Other matches will see The Conglomeration (Mark Briscoe & Kyle O’Reilly) team with Hologram against The Beast Mortos and the Premier Athletes, Private Party & Komander will be in action, Bang Bang Gang will take on the Cage Of Agony, Queen Aminata will face Robyn Renegade, and Wheeler Yuta will face Anthony Henry.

**********

Collision began with TNT Champion Jack Perry riding to the Nutter Center in his Scapegoat bus. He walked in from the parking lot and made his entrance for the opening match. Tony Schiavone & Arthur Ashe Stadium headliner Nigel McGuinness were on the call.

AEW TNT Title Match – Jack Perry defeated Christopher Daniels to retain

A simple TV win for Perry. I understand Daniels going for a measure of revenge against the Elite, but what are we doing here? Is Daniels still the Vice Principal? Is this power struggle still happening? Most importantly, would anyone care if this aspect of the Elite was dropped cold? It’s a bad story that would serve everyone better if they left it in the rearview.

This match came about after Vice Principal Daniels accepted Perry’s open challenge on last night’s Rampage. It was announced during the entrances that Hook vs. Roderick Strong for the FTW Championship was official for Dynamite: Grand Slam.

After the opening exchanges, Perry took advantage with a rebound lariat. Perry held serve, scoring a nearfall off of a missile dropkick. Daniels got a cut on the top of his head but was able to catch Perry with an STO. He fired up, hitting another STO and a Death Valley Driver for a nearfall. An Angel’s Wings counter led to a pinning predicament that ended with Perry sending Daniels into the mat with force by holding onto the ropes on an O’Connor Roll. Perry hit the Glass Jaw knee to retain the title.

After the match, Perry said that the people who don’t like him are the ones who can’t handle the truth. He then got on his bus and drove away.

A visibly distracted Wheeler Yuta was in the back with Lexy Nair, saying that he didn’t want to share any information about Bryan Danielson out of respect for his family. He hadn’t spoken to any of the other BCC members since All Out and would try to use Danielson’s lessons to focus for his match tonight.

Hologram & The Conglomeration (Kyle O’Reilly & Mark Briscoe) defeated The Beast Mortos & The Premier Athletes (Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese) (w/Josh Woods & Mark Sterling)

During their entrance, Sterling explained that he used some of Daivari’s money to pay off Mortos to help the Athletes with their Conglomeration & Hologram problems. Mortos seemingly took control with shoulder blocks to all three of his opponents, but Hologram came back with a lucha armdrag that sent Mortos to the floor. O’Reilly got caught on the wrong side of the ring, getting boots from everyone on the floor as we went to a commercial.

O’Reilly fought for the tag as we came back, getting the hot tag to Briscoe. Briscoe ran wild, getting the fisherman’s buster on Nese for a nearfall. Briscoe sent Mortos to the floor, but Nese caught the now-legal Hologram with a rolling uppercut. Hologram hit a Destroyer to Nese, kicking off a move train that turned into a dive train, ending with Briscoe hitting his step-up dive off an interfering Sterling’s back. Hologram hit a 720 DDT for the win.

After the match, Mortos attacked Hologram before O’Reilly and Briscoe fought him off.

We got footage of Orange Cassidy & Chris Jericho at last night’s CMLL Anniversary show. Cassidy was in a trios match, while Jericho wrestled Mistico in the main event. After Jericho’s match, Cassidy helped Mistico fight off a Jericho & Big Bill post-match attack. Cassidy was with Renee Paquette for an interview but was quickly attacked by the Learning Tree. They stuck Cassidy’s head in the stolen backpack before Jericho broke the Best Friends picture over Cassidy’s head…which was in a backpack. Seems a little backwards.

There was a short video – no pun intended – with Stokely Hathaway looking for some AEW tape to watch. All of his choices were tag team matches from AEW/ROH history, like Swerve in Our Glory vs. The Acclaimed & The Young Bucks vs. Sting & Darby Allin. It seems like Stokely may be interested in the tag team titles.

AEW Women’s Champion Mariah May was backstage with Lexy Nair, where she announced that she wouldn’t be having her championship celebration in the Wish version of Cincinnati known as Dayton, Ohio. May said that she had her best times with Mina Shirakawa and that she needed Shirakawa to properly celebrate. Yuka Sakazaki introduced herself and said that she wanted May’s belt. May said that she would rip Sakazaki’s head off, and Sakazaki promptly no-sold her.

Wheeler Yuta defeated Anthony Henry (w/ Beef)

This was a good match, with Henry taking advantage of Yuta’s absentmindedness until he brought up Bryan Danielson. Yuta is going to be a pivotal part of this BCC implosion angle one way or another, so it’s good to see him get some TV wins in the meantime.

McGuinness noted that Yuta forgot to tape his wrists, noting that he wasn’t in a good headspace and was forgetting details. Henry had control early on, hitting a double stomp. Yuta got hit with a forearm and attempted his rebound into the ring but fell to the floor instead. Henry dumped Yuta into the barricade with a suplex.

After a commercial, Henry scored a nearfall with an Air Raid Crash. Yuta was able to hit his rebound into the ring on the second attempt, scoring with a German suplex. Henry rocked Yuta with a knee, then caught Yuta on the outside with a running dropkick. Henry hit a top-rope double stomp in the ring for a nearfall.

Henry mocked Bryan Danielson, which fired Yuta up. Yuta clubbered on Henry in the corner before hitting a dive to Henry on the floor. Yuta took Henry on a barricade tour around the ring and dropped Beef with a boot. Yuta drilled Henry with the hammer-and-anvil elbows and got the submission with the Cattle Mutilation.

Serena Deeb & Queen Aminata were backstage with Lexy Nair. Deeb said that Aminata had a lot of potential, but she wasn’t ready to be a top star. Her offer to join Deeb’s Dojo still stood, but Aminata didn’t have time for it as she had her own match to get ready for. Deeb turned her attention to her opponent tonight, Yuka Sakazaki. She brought up their abandoned feud from earlier this year, saying that the mere thought of fighting Deeb caused Sakazaki to break her leg, and that Deeb would make things much worse tonight.

Anna Jay was backstage. She talked about her Japanese tour with Stardom, noting that she was tired and beat up, but still wanted more. She owed Mariah May a receipt and had never been in the ring with Mercedes Mone. Jay said that if anyone wanted to see how much better she was, they could try her.

Komander & Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) (w/Alex Abrahantes) defeated Jon Cruz, Lord Crewe & Ren Jones

In a pre-match interview, Private Party wasn’t happy with how their match got taken away from them on Dynamite by Jon Moxley’s Fight Cult – not an official name – and said that they have never backed down from a fight. Kassidy said that they would cross paths at some point. I don’t like Private Party’s chances.

This is apparently the match that was meant to happen on Dynamite. I like the continuity of running the match on the weekend show. Komander hit a big ropewalk dive, then elevated Quen into position for the Gin & Juice to get the win.

Tony Schiavone asked Nigel McGuinness how he could be sure that Bryan Danielson would be able to compete at Grand Slam. McGuinness said that he nor Tony Khan were sure. He explained that Jon Moxley was only speculating that Danielson would miss Grand Slam. Since Darby Allin put his scheduled title shot against Danielson on the line instead, McGuinness asked for a match with Danielson in case he was cleared in time for the show. McGuinness said that if Danielson didn’t show up, it would be out of cowardice, not out of physical inability.

McGuinness threw to a highlight package of his matches with Danielson in Ring of Honor, saying that no one had beaten Danielson as convincingly as he had. Sixteen years later, McGuinness was in the best shape of his life, while Danielson was a physical wreck. At the commentary desk, McGuinness said that even though Danielson would still be World Champion after Grand Slam, he would still end Danielson’s career in New York.

(This was both build for the McGuinness/Danielson match, and an attempt to patch over the plot hole from Dynamite regarding Darby Allin’s title shot. It was a fine attempt, explaining that Moxley basically conned Allin into putting his title match on the line. But if Danielson can possibly be cleared for Grand Slam, then Allin should still get the title match that he earned for that show. They worked themselves into a logic gap, then tried to smooth it over after the fact. I get doing the violent angle on the PPV to get people talking and get some late buys, but it would have been smoother to do it at Grand Slam itself to get Allin’s title match out of the way. He can earn another one down the line if that’s the direction they want to go.)

Yuka Sakazaki defeated Serena Deeb

While Sakazaki’s music annoys the hell out of me, she’s a fresh name for Mariah May to defend against.

AEW Women’s Champion Mariah May came out to commentary, asking McGuinness if she inspired his comeback. Sakazaki took Deeb around the world in a pinning combination, but Deeb came back with a neckbreaker in the ropes as we went to commercial.

After the break, Sakazaki made her comeback, scoring with a missile dropkick and a suplex. May kept assuming that Sakazaki was a child. Deeb hit a German suplex and a short-arm clothesline for a nearfall. Sakazaki fought out of a Detox position and hit a sliding lariat for a nearfall. Deeb hit a powerbomb and locked on a Stretch Muffler. Sakazaki got to the ropes and got back to her feet, trading forearms with Deeb until Deeb dropped her with a lariat. Deeb went for Detox, but Sakazaki pulled her up into a Northern Lights Bomb. Sakazaki hit the Magical Girl Splash for the win.

After the match, May jumped Sakazaki on the ramp. May went for the Storm Zero, but Sakazaki fought out and dropped her with a superkick. Sakazaki held up the Women’s Title belt as the crowd chanted her name.

We got another stylized video from The Outrunners.

Top Flight, Lio Rush, & Action Andretti were walking outside when Andretti got hot about their recent results. He was upset at how all of them had lost big opportunities this week, while the rest of the group tried to calm him down. Andretti said that they needed to get their act together and stormed off.

Bang Bang Gang (Juice Robinson, Austin & Colten Gunn) defeated Cage Of Agony (Bishop Kaun, Brian Cage & Toa Liona)

Kaun cut off Austin Gunn with a lariat to take control after the opening exchanges. After a commercial, Colten got the hot tag and ran wild, scoring a nearfall with a jumping chop to Liona’s head. The referee missed a small package trying to clear the ring, allowing Liona to hit a Pounce. The Pendulum Powerbomb from Cage of Agony got a nearfall broken up by Robinson.

Austin low-bridged Cage as he hit the ropes, allowing Colten to drop both Gates with a DDT. Robinson tagged in and ran wild on Cage. Cage countered The Juice Is Loose and hit a discus lariat, running wild on all three of his opponents. Another pendulum powerbomb got cut off, with the Gunns hitting Cage with the 3:10 To Yuma. Robinson hit The Juice Is Loose to get the win.

An angry Serena Deeb was in the back when Queen Aminata walked past for her match. She mockingly asked Deeb if her performance in her loss was how it was done.

Queen Aminata defeated Robyn Renegade

Aminata vs. Deeb can be a solid feud to get Aminata some focus.

Renegade gave a solid effort in her hometown, but Aminata scored the win with the Brain Drain headbutt. After the match, Serena Deeb jumped Aminata after the match with a chop block. Deeb held Aminata in a single-leg crab until the referee corps forced her away.

The House of Black were in their dark room. Matthews said that someone challenged them and that they didn’t like their odds. I think they were referring to Top Flight, as Andretti said something about Brody King in their segment earlier tonight.

FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) defeated Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson)

This was an odd result. The Grizzled Young Veterans just came in, and FTR are bulletproof as a team. Why put them over instead of the new team? This was a solid match, but it felt like they were holding back for another match.

Harwood and Drake traded shots to start, with Wheeler scoring a quick count on a slingshot shoulder block. Drake dragged Harwood to their corner and got a tag to Gibson, who helped Drake hit quick offense on Harwood to get the upper hand. Wheeler laid out Gibson with a lariat, allowing Harwood to get a nearfall on Drake with a sunset flip. Harwood hit a belly-to-back suplex as we went to commercial.

After the commercial, the Veterans had control of Harwood, hitting another flurry of offense to keep Harwood from making the tag. Harwood made the tag, but Gibson took the referee’s attention to keep the tag from being registered. Harwood ducked a leg lariat and made his way to the corner for the legal tag, allowing Wheeler to run wild. Drake countered a powerslam into a small package for a nearfall.

Gibson snuck a tag, holding Wheeler in place for a Drake enzuigiri. They went for Grit Your Teeth, but Harwood pulled Drake out of the ring. We got a pinning predicament, ending with Drake cutting off a spike piledriver and Gibson hitting a hammerlock driver. Wheeler cut off a Doomsday Device, allowing Harwood to lock on a Sharpshooter. Drake submitted, but the Veterans kept brawling with FTR after the match. The Outrunners came out to make the save for FTR and shook hands with them afterwards.

The card for Dynamite was run down, with the addition of Mariah May & Serena Deeb vs. Queen Aminata & Yuka Sakazaki. Also announced for next week’s Collision was Dustin Rhodes & Sammy Guevara vs. Matt Taven & Mike Bennett in a Bunkhouse Brawl for the ROH World Tag Team Titles.

FTR vs. Grizzled Young Veterans set for next week’s AEW Collision

A tag team match is set for next week’s Collision.

During Friday’s show, FTR was asked what was next for them. Dax Harwood officially issued a challenge to the Grizzled Young Veterans for next week in Dayton, Ohio, saying they’ve been jumped for the last two weeks by them and were ready to welcome Zack Gibson & James Drake to AEW formally.

Earlier on Collision, FTR came to the ring after GYV defeated the Iron Savages. The two teams brawled for a bit before GYV bailed.

GYV made a surprise appearance at All In last month, laying out both FTR and The Acclaimed following the three-way AEW Tag Team title match with The Young Bucks. On the August 31 edition of Collision, they attacked FTR again.

After leaving WWE last year, GYV had a short stint in TNA before departing in March. They also wrestled on the April 27 edition of Collision, losing to The Acclaimed.

Here is the lineup so far for next week’s Collision, which returns to its normal Saturday timeslot:

  • FTR vs. Grizzled Young Veterans

AEW Rampage live results: Konosuke Takeshita returns

A four-way match featuring the returning Konosuke Takeshita headlines this week’s AEW Rampage.

After a month away competing in NJPW’s G1 tournament, Takeshita returns in a four-way against The Beast Mortos, Komander, and Lio Rush. Takeshita finished second in B Block in the G1, ultimately losing in the quarterfinals round of the tournament’s playoffs.

In a three-way tag team contest, Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal face Undisputed Kingdom’s Matt Taven & Mike Bennett, and Private Party’s Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen.

Two stars in the women’s division will have featured bouts against enhancement talent on the show with Nyla Rose in action against Aminah Belmont, plus Mina Shirakawa facing Missa Kate.

After returning on this past weekend’s All In and attacking FTR, James Drake & Zack Gibson of Grizzled Young Veterans will square off with Turbo Floyd & Truth Magnum of The Outrunners.

Tonight’s Rampage was taped Wednesday night in Champaign, Illinois. Spoilers from the show are available here.

**********

Taped in Champaign, Illinois.

Excalibur, Tony Schiavone & Matt Menard were on commentary.

Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal (w/ Karen Jarrett) won a three way over the Undisputed Kingdom & Private Party (9:51)

Taven hit a dropkick then reminded us that he is, in fact, Matt Taven. Taven got caught in the Private Party corner and it was not much of a party for Taven. They worked over his arm and hit him with a flapjack. Bennett ran in and Private Party delivered a dropkick/hangman’s neckbreaker combination, and Quen floored both members of the Undisputed Era with a crossbody. But back in the ring, Taven clotheslined Zay to take control.

Jay Lethal got the tag and teased getting the figure four on all four of his opponents. Bennett popped up Lethal into a forearm from Bennett to take control going into the commercial break.

Lethal got the tag to Jarrett, who got a pop. Jarrett cleaned Bennet’s clock in the corner with punuches and gave Zay a high back body drop. Jarrett set up Taven for a neckbreaker from his partner.

Private Party got the silly string on Bennett, and Quen followed up with the 450 for a near fall. Bennet hit a rolling forearm and a Death Valley Driver on Bennett. Lethal caught Zay with the Lethal Injection. Jarrett went for the The Stroke on Taven, but Taven blocked it. Jarrett and Lethal got a Bennett and Lethal in stereo figure fours, and both Taven and Bennett eventually tapped out.

Mina Shirakawa defeated Missa Kate (3:03)

Shirakawa has the RevPro Women’s Championship belt with her, as well as a “Queen of Southside” belt.

Shirakawa hit a frog splash for a near fall. Kate countered a reverse suplex with a superkick for a near fall. Shirawaka hit a rolling elbow and a backfist. Shirawaka hit a sit out reverse suplex and got the pinfall.

– Stokely Hathaway & Kriss Statlander talk some trash about Willow Nightingale, and Statlander knocked out a stagehand with a steel chain.

Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) defeated The Outrunners (Turbo Floyd & Truth Magnum) (w/ Erica Leigh) (8:45)

Lots of impressive trash talk from Gibson. Gibson fell victim to a double elbow for a near fall. Drake tripped up Turbo Floyd and Gibson hit him with a sliding kick.

After a long commercial, The Grizzled Young Veterans continued to work over Magnum. Turbo finally got the hot tag and slammed both Veterans. Gibson set up Floyd for a boot from Drake. Turbo came back and clotheslined both men. Magnum went to the top, but Drake shoved him down. Gibson and Drake hit Magnum with a Doomsday Device (which really should have been the finish… I mean Drake took Magnum’s head off with that lariat), then finished him off with a High Lo. This was twice as long as it needed to be.

Nyla Rose defeated Aminah Belmont (1:31)

Rose won this quickly with a spinning Beast Bomb.

Konosuke Takeshita (w/ Don Callis) won a four-way by pinning Komander (w/ Alex Abrahantes) that also included The Beast Mortos & Lio Rush (13:53)

Hype videos for each man in the match were shown throughout the show,  making this match feel a bit more special than your average Rampage main event. Also, good to see Abrahantes isn’t out of a job with the Lucha Bros likely leaving AEW.

Takeshita and Mortos overpowered their much smaller opponents early on. Takeshita and Mortos caught their opponents when they went for dives on the floor, and did the old Aussie Open spot where they rammed them into each other. Mortos and Takeshita got into a brawl on the floor, and then Rush and Komander caught them with a pair of tope con hilos.

Back in the ring, Rush and Komander had a speedy exchange. Rush looked fantastic, but just as he got the edge on Komander, Takeshita and Mortos ran in and mauled him. Takeshita put Rush down with a big boot. Komader pushed off Takeshita and hit him with a dropkick. Rush hit a rope walk tornio on Takeshita and Rush. Mortos then hit his own through the ropes tornio on Komander.

Takeshita floored Mortos with a forearm. Takeshita blocked a rana from Rush and went for a powerbomb, but Rush escaped. Takeshita tossed Rush into the ropes, but he rebounded off the bottom rope and into a stunner on Takeshita. Mortos caught Komader with a lung blower, and Mortos and Takeshita clotheslined each other.

Mortos went to the top, but Komander caught him with a kick and followed him up. Komander set up a Spanish Fly, but Takeshita got up there and suplexed Komander, who gave Mortos the Spanish Fly. Insane spot. Takeshita went for the cover on both Komander and Mortos, but Rush broke it up with a splash off the top.

Komader went for a poisoned rana, but Takeshita blocked it. Komander turned it into a victory roll for a near fall, avoiding a dive from Mortos at the same time. Takeshita went for an outside in superplex, but Komader escaped.  Komander hit a springboard poisoned rana on Mortos for a near fall. Komander missed a  shooting star press on Mortos when he dropped to the floor. Rush hit a tope on Mortos. He went for a frog splash on Komander, but missed and Mortos broke Rush in half with a spear. Mortos powerbombed Komander on his knee, and Takeshita hit Mortos with a knee. Takeshita hit Komander with a spinning Blue Thunder Bomb, then a Falcon Arrow to get the pinfall.

This was the best Rampage main event in forever and a good return win for Takeshita.

On Collision tomorrow (which feels like it’s missing a main event):

  • Tomohiro Ishii v. Kyle Fletcher
  • Queen Aminada v. Hikaru Shida v. Thunder Rosa v. Serena Deeb
  • FTR v. The Undisputed Kingdom
  • Lee Moriarty, Johnny TV & Mortos v. Hologram, Kyle O’Reilly & Orange Cassidy

Rampage has felt a little more interesting the last few weeks. I hope this keeps up.

AEW All In notes: MJF’s ring, Grizzled Young Veterans, Willow Nightingale, Martha Hart

Here’s some additional news and notes from today’s AEW All In from London’s Wembley Stadium:

MJF tweeted earlier in the day that his Dynamite Diamond ring was stolen, calling England “a lawless country.” However, there was some doubt as to whether it was a swerve for something to come in his American/International title defense against Will Ospreay later.

That was not the case as MJF intended to use wrapped brass knuckles instead but was thwarted by the returning Daniel Garcia, leading to his title loss to Ospreay.

No further details were revealed about the circumstances of the ring’s disappearance, assuming it is indeed stolen and not a storyline.

The Grizzled Young Veterans aren’t done with AEW quite yet.

James Drake & Zack Gibson made a surprise appearance following the Young Bucks’ successful AEW Tag Team title defense over FTR and The Acclaimed. The two stared down the Jackson brothers before turning their attention to Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler, beating them down further and leaving them laying after hitting Grit Your Teeth.

They made their promotional in-ring debut this past April with a loss to The Acclaimed. The duo lost their RevPro Tag Team titles on Saturday, perhaps indicating they have a new contractual home.

As of this writing, AEW head Tony Khan has not officially designated them as #AllElite and under contract although Drake later posted “GRIZZLED. ALL ELITE. VETERANS.” on X:

Willow Nightingale will get to choose what the stipulation is for her CMLL Women’s title defense against Kris Statlander at next month’s All Out.

She earned the honor after she and Tomohiro Ishii defeated Statlander and Stokely Hathaway on the Zero Hour pre-show.

Martha Hart appeared during the pre-show alongside Tony Khan, congratulating both Owen Hart Foundation tournament winners ahead of their title shots at All In.

Grizzled Young Veterans added to NJPW Capital Collision

James Drake & Zack Gibson of Grizzled Young Veterans will be in action in Washington, DC on August 30 at NJPW Capital Collision.

In the promo, GYV state that NJPW is where people go to prove themselves against the best wrestlers in the world, and that just like The Road Warriors did, Grizzled Young Veterans will prove themselves in NJPW at Capital Collision.

Opponents were not announced for the duo.

Grizzled Young Veterans love that AEW ‘celebrates wrestling’

The Grizzled Young Veterans discussed their AEW debut during a recent podcast appearance.

James Drake and Zack Gibson lost to The Acclaimed on the April 27 edition of AEW Collision. During a recent appearance on the Cultaholic podcast, Drake said that they appreciate how AEW “celebrates wrestling” and provides opportunities for good wrestlers.

Drake said:

We had a great time (in AEW), great conversation with Tony. The one thing that I love about that place is it celebrates wrestling. So, first and foremost, it celebrates wrestling. If you can go, you will get your roses.

That’s literally something that me and Zack have really prided ourselves on for a very long time. I am 5’10 on a good day. I could probably get wider but I’m not going to get taller and I really hate how for a very long time in wrestling, something as silly as your height can dictate your future. It’s very silly when you can think about the bigger picture.

Gibson added that when the Grizzled Young Veterans left WWE last October, they said they wanted to work with the best talent out there and they couldn’t do that without working in AEW.

Gibson said:

When we came out, we said we wanted to be everywhere, we wanted to work with all the best talents that are out there and you can’t go on record as saying that and then not end up, at least, trying to do work with the AEW tag division because that division is stacked.

There’s rumors of other people coming in but regardless of looking at who potentially could be in, just look at the actual active division right now with, like, Acclaimed, FTR, Young Bucks, the list just goes on and on and it’s just top-tier tag team wrestling who are given time to shine and actually show out and do proper tag team wrestling on TV with some real purpose. So, it’s such an exciting place to get a foot in the door.

We were both buzzing to be there, the Acclaimed are great opponents for us, the crowd was hot on the night, the crowd was hot on the internet kind of reacting to everything. So, everything’s coming up Milhouse.

In addition to recent work with AEW, TNA, and RevPro, the Grizzled Young Veterans are also starting their own promotion. Burning Heart Pro Wrestling will debut on Friday, June 21 at the Liverpool Olympia in Liverpool, England.

“A venue rich in history that has seen its fair share of blood, sweat, and tears in a city with unrivaled heart. What better place for a company called Burning Heart to show the world exactly what they are about: pro wrestling from the heart,” Gibson said when announcing their first show.
