NJPW crowns Best of the Super Juniors 33 winner

YOH has won NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 33.

He defeated last year’s tournament winner Kosei Fujita in a rematch of last year’s final on Sunday in Ota City.

After the match, IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI made his way to the ring. As YOH and DOUKI were staring each other down, SHO attacked YOH from behind. DOUKI joined in the attack but YOH gave them both low blows and cleared the ring.

YOH then brought out Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, and Toru Yano to celebrate with him as the show came to a close.

YOH’s BOSJ 33 win is his first singles tournament or championship win in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

He is a six-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, having held the titles five times with SHO and once with Master Wato. YOH and SHO also won the Super Junior Tag Tournament three years in a row from 2017 to 2019, and YOH is a two-time NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champion as well.

YOH was also voted Rookie of the Year in the 2013 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors finals set

NJPW is running back the 2025 Best of the Super Juniors finals with YOH hoping for a different result this time.

It will be a repeat of last year when YOH and Kosei Fujita face off in the Best of the Super Juniors finals this Sunday. Fujita won that 2025 bout to claim his first-ever BOSJ trophy. YOH, who made it to the finals in both 2021 and 2025, has never won the tournament before.

During block action this year, YOH and Fujita finished second in their blocks. They advanced to the semifinals for what ended up being matchups against their respective tag team partners. YOH defeated his ally Master Wato, the A Block winner, while Fujita was able to defeat his Ichiban Sweet Boys partner and B Block winner Robbie Eagles.

The tournament finals are being held at Ota City Gym in Tokyo on Sunday, and the show will air live on NJPW World starting at 4 a.m. Eastern time. In addition to the BOSJ trophy, an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship shot is at stake with either YOH or Fujita becoming the next challenger for DOUKI.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors finals (Sunday, June 7) —

  • Best of the Super Juniors tournament final: YOH vs. Kosei Fujita
  • Rest of card to be announced

NJPW announces partnership ‘designed to teach Japanese language through pro wrestling’

NJPW has entered into a new partnership that is “designed to teach the Japanese language through pro wrestling.”

The promotion announced today that it is partnering with JapanesePod101.com, a language-learning tool that helps English speakers study Japanese by guiding them through real Japanese conversations. The service has both free and paid tiers.

In the coming weeks, JapanesePod101.com will offer collaborative videos with NJPW that are focused on teaching users the type of language that is used in Japanese pro wrestling culture. NJPW announced:

  • New Japan Pro-Wrestling is pleased to announce a new collaborative project with JapanesePod101.
  • Through an extensive library of video and social content together with carefully curated online lessons, JapanesePod101 is a long established leader in online Japanese language learning.
  • A series of collaborative videos in the coming weeks and months will allow NJPW fans to get to grips with some of the Japanese language spoken by fans, wrestlers and in venues, allowing for deeper immersion in the Japanese pro-wrestling culture. For regular JapanesePod101 viewers and users, this collaborative content will serve as an introduction to a key part of Japanese sporting and popular culture they might not have explored before.

NJPW’s overtures toward international fans —

NJPW has courted English-speaking fans through establishing international social media accounts and an English-language version of its website, along with offering English commentary for big events on NJPW World. Next month, the first night of this year’s G1 Climax will take place in Chicago. NJPW is also holding a fan fest surrounding that event.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors semifinals set

A dozen names entered the last day of block action still in contention, but NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 33 is now down to its final four wrestlers.

Both semifinal matches are set to pit tag team partners against each other. It will be Master Wato vs. YOH and Robbie Eagles vs. Kosei Fujita this Friday (June 5). The winners advance to the finals on Sunday (June 7), with that bout determining the tournament winner and the next challenger for IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI.

Wato defeated Nick Wayne today to finish on 12 points as the A Block winner. Fujita defeated Daiki Nagai to claim second place in the block, also finishing on 12 points and beating out Francesco Akira due to a tiebreaker.

All of the B Block contenders won their matches today, but it was Eagles and YOH — with respective victories over Hyo and Daisuke Sasaki — who advanced as the top two after tiebreakers were worked out. The block ended in a five-way tie at 12 points.

Fujita is looking to repeat as the BOSJ winner after defeating YOH in last year’s finals. Wato is also looking to claim a second BOSJ trophy after winning the tournament in 2023.

Friday’s show begins at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time and is airing live on NJPW World with English and Japanese commentary. The rest of the card aside from Wato vs. YOH and Eagles vs. Fujita has not been announced yet.

JBL believes WWE will try to replicate AAA success in the UK and Japan

AAA commentator and former WWE Champion JBL recently discussed the share sales of NJPW to TV Asahi and CyberAgent. Speaking on Something To Wrestle With, Layfield discussed the strategy WWE has taken with AAA, saying that he believes the plan is to replicate it in the UK and Japan:

“I’m surprised they [NJPW] went to a TV company, though, and not to WWE. I really thought WWE would buy one of the Japanese companies, and they still may.

“It was years ago, I mean, years ago, it was mid-’90s, when I would hear Vince talk about what his plans were for global domination, and this fits right into it, the exact same plan. The plan is not necessarily owned by Vince, but maybe that’s where it came from, because certainly Hunter was Vince’s right-hand guy. Vince thought for a long time he would have television networks and training centers in all the different continents, except for, of course, Antarctica, but six different continents.

“I think what they did with AAA, I think what they have a potential to do in the U.K., I think they’re going to do that in Japan. I think you’re going to see that. I think I’d be very surprised if by the end of the year that WWE has not bought something in Japan, or at least partnered with Japan.”

WWE Global Localisation

WWE’s global localisation plans have been halted somewhat since the early 2020s, due to the pandemic and changes in market conditions. NXT UK was expected to be rebranded to NXT Europe, and the plans for a quasi version of NXT Japan have at least been talked about in the past in some capacity.

With the initial success of AAA and WWE now being under the TKO umbrella, it’s probably more likely that the company will look to purchase companies outright going forward, rather than branding NXT in these different territories. WWE has worked with Pro Wrestling NOAH during the past few years and previously had relationships in the UK with the likes of PROGRESS and ICW.
