Scott D’Amore: Tony Khan has ‘changed wrestling for the better’

Working with AEW and Tony Khan has been an enjoyable experience for Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling boss Scott D’Amore.

At the end of March, D’Amore and Khan worked together as ROH and MLP co-promoted their Global Wars Canada event. D’Amore spoke with Late Night Grin about the experience and praised Khan for how he’s made a positive impact on the wrestling industry. He described Khan as being a fun and happy guy, which balances well with D’Amore’s more analytical approach.

“I think it’s been really enjoyable. One of the things is — Tony Khan has a love and a passion for professional wrestling that is near-unmatched,” D’Amore said. “He is a superfan, and he’s very proud of that fact. And the enjoyment he gets out of being around wrestling, creating wrestling, and really making a difference in the business is huge for him.

“I mean, he’s a good guy. You know, people complained about this and that and anything else. And that’s cool. But when you look at it, here’s somebody who has changed wrestling for the better. People make more money in wrestling because of what he’s done and what AEW has done. More people are getting opportunities. And people genuinely get treated extremely well. You’ve got someone who’s taken the pro sports approach to how you treat your athletes and applied that to professional wrestling — and that’s an amazing step forward in our industry.”

It was announced during Global Wars weekend that MLP has agreed to a television deal with TSN in Canada. D’Amore told Late Night Grin that, when launching the promotion, his goal was to create something that would make a difference in pro wrestling and shine a spotlight on Canadian talent. Getting this TV deal is a big step toward that.

“For people that don’t know, in Canada, TSN — that’s The Sports Network. That’s what TSN stands for. It’s basically our ESPN,” D’Amore said. “It was the very first all-sports network in Canada. It’s legendary here. It’s the equivalent for American fans of being on ESPN or UK fans back in the day, the equivalent of being on Sky Sports. So It’s huge.”

D’Amore noted that, like NJPW caters toward the Japanese market, MLP is geared toward Canadian fans but welcomes viewers from all around the world. The promotion is holding an event in Las Vegas during WrestleMania week as part of Palms Slam Fest.

Mauro Ranallo to call ROH/MLP Global Wars event

For the first time ever, Mauro Ranallo is set to call an AEW/ROH-associated event.

It was announced today that Ranallo will be part of the broadcast team for Global Wars Canada, working with Ian Riccaboni and Don Callis on the commentary team. The show is being co-promoted by ROH and Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling and will take place in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on Friday, March 27.

A joint press release announcing Ranallo’s inclusion on the commentary team includes quotes from both Tony Khan and Scott D’Amore.

“Ring of Honor has always been defined by excellence both in the ring and on the microphone,” Khan said. “Mauro Ranallo’s return alongside Ian Riccaboni and Don Callis brings together three of the best voices in professional wrestling today. Global Wars represents a major moment in the continued partnership between Ring of Honor and Maple Leaf Pro, and we’re proud to present this event to fans around the world on WatchROH.com.”

“Having Mauro Ranallo return to Maple Leaf Pro is a tremendous moment for our company,” D’Amore said. “Mauro is one of the great broadcast voices in combat sports. Pairing Mauro with Ian Riccaboni and All Elite Wrestling star Don Callis creates an all-star booth worthy of the Global Wars stage and reflects the strength and international scope of our partnership with Ring of Honor.”

Ranallo is a combat sports announcer who has previously worked for WWE and NJPW. He was the subject of the 2018 Showtime documentary “Bipolar Rock ‘N Roller,” where he opened up about his struggle with bipolar disorder.

St. Clair College in Windsor is hosting Global Wars on March 27 and then MLP’s Uprising event on March 28. Ranallo will not be on commentary for Uprising due to a prior commitment with Premier Boxing Champions. Riccaboni and Callis will be handling commentary that night.

Maple Leaf Pro is a classic Canadian wrestling brand that was revived by D’Amore in 2024 following his departure from TNA Wrestling.

Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling, CMLL announce official partnership

Scott D’Amore’s Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling has entered into an official partnership with CMLL.

Earlier this week, Gisele Shaw retained the Maple Leaf Pro Women’s Championship against Sanely at a CMLL event. Josh Alexander is now set to defend his MLP Canadian Championship against Esfinge at Arena Mexico this Friday. Ahead of that match, MLP and CMLL have issued a press release formally announcing their partnership, which is designed to expand the global reach of both promotions and elevate their brand visibility.

“The agreement establishes a formal talent exchange that will see MLP promote CMLL stars across Canada, while CMLL will showcase MLP talent throughout Mexico — a collaborative effort aimed at strengthening international awareness and driving commercial growth for both promotions,” the press release said.

MLP and CMLL’s partnership will also see them coordinate on marketing efforts, promotional planning, and licensed use of each organization’s intellectual property for coordinated events.

“This partnership represents a meaningful step forward in building a truly international wrestling ecosystem,” D’Amore said. “CMLL is one of the most respected organizations in the sport, and together we intend to create compelling matchups, unforgettable events, and new opportunities for talent to perform on a global stage.”

“This alliance reflects our shared vision of growing professional wrestling beyond traditional borders,” CMLL President Salvador Lutteroth said. “By bringing our athletes to new audiences and embracing cooperative promotion, we are creating fresh experiences for fans in both countries. Only in Arena Mexico, one of four different arenas owned by CMLL in Mexico, we managed to bring in over 1 Million fans into the Cathedral of Lucha Libre, and we are excited to have those fans witness the matches and action that the pairing of CMLL and MLP will bring to audiences.”

D’Amore revived the Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling brand in 2024 after being fired as president of TNA Wrestling. MLP is also set to work with ROH next month for its Global Wars Canada and MLP Uprising events on March 27-28. Those shows are being held in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and will include talent from AEW, NJPW, NOAH, DDT, and CMLL.

The event will be headlined by current AEW National Champion Ricochet, marking his first GLOBAL WARS main event appearance in Canada.”

Also announced for the weekend are Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows, Kaito Kiyomiya (NOAH), Daisuke Sasaki (DDT Pro), Mascara Dorada (CMLL/AEW), Barbaro Cavernario (CMLL), and Bishop Dyer, formerly Baron Corbin in WWE.

ROH and MLP announced the news on Friday:

“We are thrilled to partner Ring of Honor with MAPLE LEAF PRO Wrestling for GLOBAL WARS and MLP UPRISING on March 27 and March 28,” said AEW CEO, GM and Head of Creative Tony Khan. “Both events will spotlight incredible stars from around the world and deliver amazing wrestling action to fans over the course of two exciting nights.”

“Two nights, two distinct events, and championship-caliber talent across the board,” said Scott D’Amore, President of MAPLE LEAF PRO. “This Mega Event weekend showcases MAPLE LEAF PRO on the world stage while celebrating the global partnerships that define professional wrestling today.”

Also in recent news, MLP’s Scott D’Amore has taken on a new role for the Georgia-based promotion, 1 Fall Wrestling (1FW), run by QT Marshall. D’Amore will be the new co-executive producer and consultant for the show.

ROH and MLP’s announcement is below:

Maple Leaf Pro raises $110K for people living with developmental disabilities

Scott D’Amore’s Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling has raised over $110,000 for charity.

The promotion ran The Reena Rumble on Monday night in Toronto’s NewAge Experience Centre. The event was a fundraiser for The Reena Foundation, which works to improve the lives of people living with developmental disabilities in the Greater Toronto Area.

MLP posted to X on Wednesday:

“Monday night’s MLP Reena Rumble was truly special. We loved partnering with @TheMagenGroup and @ReenaFoundation to raise $110,386 for a spectacular cause! A huge thank you to presenting sponsor @TributeCommunitiesCentre and all the amazing sponsor’s, special guest @MattHardyBrand, all the talent and crew and of course the awesome fans!”

The show featured several wrestlers from TNA. This followed a recent controversy after Moose said in an interview that he was not able to work for D’Amore’s promotion because of his ties to TNA. TNA Champion Mike Santana wrestled on the show, and Matt Hardy made a special appearance as well.

Hardy posted the following after the show:

“What a time at the Reena Rumble in Toronto tonight. Over $110,000 was raised for charity. Posed with a couple new friends I made tonight, Kenny & MicroMan!”

The annual event, now under the MLP banner, has been produced by the Magen Brothers, Jian and Page since 2019. In addition to promoting local wrestling events, the brothers were longtime managers of The Iron Sheik and produced the award-winning 2014 documentary The Sheik.

The About Us section of The Reena Foundation’s website reads:

“Reena was established in 1973 by parents of children with developmental disabilities as a practical alternative to institutions. Since that time Reena has grown to provide support for 1,000 individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Reena offers a variety of services including: residential support, respite programs, counselling, therapy and advocacy. These services are offered in 32 Group Homes and over 60 Supported Independent Living Apartments across the Greater Toronto Area.”

Maple Leaf Pro often uploads shows to YouTube in the days following each event. The advertised lineup for Monday’s show is below:

Maple Leaf Pro Reena Rumble non-spoiler advertised match listing:

  • TNA World Champion Mike Santana vs. Sheldon Jean
  • Carlito vs. Richard Holliday
  • Josh Alexander & Gisele Shaw vs. Kris Chambers & Taylor Rising
  • Champions Grail Champion Rohan Raja defends against Rhino

TNA World Champion to make Maple Leaf Pro debut

TNA World Champion Mike Santana is heading up to Canada for his Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling debut.

Santana will be in action at MLP Reena Rumble in Toronto next Monday (October 27), taking on Sheldon Jean. The match was announced by Santana cutting a promo accepting an open challenge that had been issued by Dean.

“Sheldon, I got to give you your props. You’ve been doing a pretty good damn job at cementing yourself as one of the best in Canada,” Santana said. “But I’m going to give you an opportunity to go toe-to-toe with one of the greatest in the world, the TNA Wrestling World Champion.

“Now Sheldon, this ain’t a knock. These are just facts. You know — and everybody knows — I’m addicted to greatness. I’ll see you at Reena Rumble. Let’s get it.”

The announcement comes after there were recently some questions over whether TNA talent are allowed to wrestle for Maple Leaf Pro, a promotion that is run by former TNA President Scott D’Amore. TNA star Moose said he’d like to be able to compete for MLP but cannot because MLP has a relationship with AEW. After those comments received attention online, TNA publicly denied that there is a ban in place.

Santana became TNA World Champion this month at Bound for Glory when he defeated NXT star Trick Williams for the title.

New Age Experience Center in Toronto is hosting the Reena Rumble event, which will benefit Reena, a charity that is dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Matt Hardy, Carlito, Colt Cabana, Gisele Shaw, and Rhino are among those set to appear.

Scott D’Amore’s Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling has announced a partnership with Santino Marella’s Battle Arts Academy in Mississauga.

The partnership will see Marella’s school and the Can-Am Dojo in Windsor, run by Josh Alexander, combine efforts to scout, train, and build a pipeline for Canadian wrestlers to gain greater opportunities in the industry.

“This partnership underlines our commitment to the future of Canadian wrestling,” said Scott D’Amore, President of MAPLE LEAF PRO. “Battle Arts Academy has been producing elite talent for years, and by combining our resources—including the Can-Am Dojo and its head coach Josh Alexander—we’re creating the premier pipeline for Canadian wrestlers to develop and thrive both nationally and globally.”

“Battle Arts Academy was founded to create world-class performers with a strong foundation in both sport and entertainment,” said Anthony Carelli, founder of Battle Arts Academy. “This partnership gives our talent a direct pipeline to the biggest stage in Canada. It’s a game-changer for young wrestlers nationwide.”

Battle Arts and MLP plan on holding regular tryouts, scouting combines, and training camps. They also say co-branded developmental showcases will be held.

Also advertised for the event are Stu Grayson, Matt Cardona, Thom Latimer, The Good Brothers, Billy Gunn, Kylie Rae, along with Alexander and Shaw.
