Nigel McGuinness returning to action at ROH Supercard of Honor

Former ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness is returning to action at next month’s ROH Supercard of Honor with a future title shot in mind.

In a clip shared to social media, McGuinness addressed former Pure Champion Josh Woods who has gone 3-0 since losing to reigning Pure champion Lee Moriarty in March in search of a rematch. Woods issued an open challenge as part of Friday’s ROH TV.

McGuinness answered the challenge.

“If you can’t beat me, you can’t beat Lee,” he said. “And if you can’t beat me, Lee…I want one more shot for the Pure title. If I can’t beat you in a third time, I’ll go quietly into the night.”

He then accepted Woods’ challenge for the streaming special, set for Friday, May 15 in Salisbury, Maryland. It will be their first ever clash and will be held under Pure rules.

The 50-year-old AEW announcer has competed sparingly since coming back in 2024 at All In: London, his first match in 13 years. He’s wrestled seven additional times since then, including two matches against Moriarty. The last was a 30 minute Iron Man match at last December’s Final Battle.

Tonight’s Ring of Honor action comes to us from ACTION DEAN~!!!3 a co-production of Ring of Honor and ACTION Wrestling to honor the late Dean Rasmussen. Rasmussen was the founder of Death Valley Driver Video Review, an early wrestling message board that brought exposure to international stars and bizarre matches before such things became easily accesible on YouTube and the like. By all accounts, he was a wonderful guy who brought a lot of joy to wrestling fans everywhere, including a guy with some big ideas named Tony Khan. Dean passed away in 2023, but this now-annual tribute to him is always a great night of wrestling!

Best Two Out Of Three Falls Submissions Only Six Man Tag Team Match: Blue Panther, El Pantera & Virus vs. Dr. Cerebro, Hechicero & Xelhua

And a pretty big one to kick it off with! Hechicero just fought Bandido for the ROH World Championship at Death Before Dushonor and Xelhua went to war with Lee Moriarty for the Pure Championship. Blue Panther, as has been previously established, is very, very old. This match was a submission-ONLY two out of three match, so no pins, just submissions.

Pantera and Cerebro (Magneto?) kicked things off with a more technical exchange than was expected in this lucadore match, buty it was pretty awesome none the less with Pantera working the wrist of Cerebro. Cerebro fought back and tagged in Xelhua, which summoned Blue Panther.

Panther had the much, much younger Xelhua in a headscissor but Xelhua flipped out. Panther responded with a brutal looking ankle stretch and then tagged in Virus, who went one on one with Hechicero. These two put a bit more speed into things, until Hechicero wrapped up Virus’ legs. Virus got out of it though and the two locked up again.

Hechicero kept trying to pin Virus, buyt the ref quickly reminded him that it was submissions only. Pantera tagged in and Hechicero slipped out and a brawl began at ringside. In the ring, Xelhua managed to get Virus to submit to a leg hold, getting the first submission for Team Hechicero.

Xelhua stayed in to face Pantera and was thrown around a bit before slipping out. That brought in Cerebro and Virus who again, kept trying to pin each other. Virus tagged in Panther and Hechicero entered to face the lucha legend.

Panther started a Bryan Danielson “yes” chant (which I’m sure geeked Danielson out big time) and Hechicero tried to get a lock on, but Panter reveresed it and Cerebro broke it up. Panther hit an arm drag and sent Hechicero out which brought Cerebro back in. Pantera took over and then Virus double teamed Cerebro with him.

Xelhua hit a crossbody from the top rope on both Pantera and Virus and the schmozz afterwards let to Panther putting Xelhua in a leg lock, forcing him to submit. That tied things up at 1-1, meaning the next submission would win the match.

Xelhua whiffed on a dropkick giving Virus a chance to get som offence in. Hechicero jumped in to beat up, well, everyone, and that left Hechicero and Virus as legal. They rolled around until Hechicero got a hold on but Pantera broke it up. Cerebro slapped an arm lock on him, but Panther clotheslined him out of it.

Xelhua and Pantera faced off, but at this point any time someone got a lock in, one of their teammates would break it up. Hechicero flew from the top rope onto Pantera and then sent Panther around the world. Hechicero locked in a reverse figure four on Virus, but Pantera broke it up.

Pantera and Cerebro locked up and Pantera had to get to the ropes to stay alive. Virus and Xelhua exchanged arm drags in and out of the ring, leaving Hechicero and Pantera in the ring to duke it out. Hechicero locked in a reverse cloverleaf on Pantera and moved it into a surfboard. Pantera held on as long as he could, but had to tap, giving the win to Team Hechicero.

Match Result: Dr. Cerebro, Hechicero & Xelhua defeated Blue Panther, El Pantera & Virus

Nicole Matthews vs. Billie Starkz

Nicole Matthews is Canadian which means I legally have to root for her, but how can anyone not see Starkz pulling out a win here. Starkz arrived alone, looking much happier to not be invovled in Athena-related drama for the moment.

Matthews relied on her technical skills to get the early advantage with a double knee to the back death lock variation. Matthews switched to a front face lock and Starkz managed to created some space. Starkz started playing mind games, but Matthews put a stop to it. Starkz slapped her and the chops began.

Matthews had a bit more power than Starkz and tossed her into the corner for a few big kicks to the throat followed by a kneelift that left Starkz dazed and staggering. Starkz reversed a powerbomb attempt and flung Matthews head first into the turnbuckle.

Starkz took a little too long soaking in her sucess and Matthews came back with some big punches that were only stopped by and eye poke from Starkz. Matthews went up top for a missile dropkick that sent Starkz flying.

Matthews hit a brainbuster in the middle of the ring, but only got a two-count. Matthews went for a moonsault, but Starkz dodged it and hit a n electric chair-style driver, putting Matthews right on her head and getting the pin.

Match Result: Billie Starkz defeated Nicole Matthews

-Backstage, Sammy Guevara and Rush, the ROH Tag Team Champions were interviewed. Guevara said that LFI are here to stay and if anyone has a problem with it, too bad. Rush agreed.

Wheeler Yuta vs. Matt Mako

Yuta was sadly not participating in the Hair-Vs-Hair match later in the show, but did arrive with Marina Shafir who I assume is allowed to take anything from the fridge while babysitting him. Mako calls himself “Weapon X” but do NOT tell Brian Cage.

Yuta started with a very technical slap to the face, causing Mako to wrap him up in a calf crusher. Yuta got the the ropes though and Mako went for an elbow lock. The two wrestled around (imagine that) until Mako caight Yuta with a spinning heel kick.

Yuta resorted to biting, taking a chunk out of Mako’s ear before sending him out of the ring. Shafir threw him judo style and Yuta dove through the ropes, sending Mako into the barricade. Back in the ring, Yuta hut a senton, but only got a two count.

Yuta dropped an elbow from the top rope, but it was another two count. Mako tried to power back, chopping Yuta from the ground. The two then exchanged a flurry of kicks, with Yuta starting to favour his leg. Shafir, with some very aggressive eyeliner watched with concern from ringside.

Mako tried to pivot to power moves, suplexing and throwing Yuta around the ring. Yuta exposed the steel holding the turnbuckle to the ring post and bounced Mako’s head off if it. Mako fell out of the ring and when Yuta followed, he put a sleeper on him.

Shafir got involved, but not enough to stop Mako from hitting a cannonball on Yuta. Mako tossed him back into the ring and put on an armbreaker. Yuta wormed his way out of it and hit an Angle Slam for a two count.

Mako put Yuta on the top turnbuckle and the two traded blows. Mako hit a superplex followed by a blue thunder bomb, but only got the traditional blue thunder two count. Mako started throwing hands until Yuta hit a back elbow. Yuta put him in a waist lock and suplexed Mako to another two count.

Yuta went up top, but Mako followed. Mako flipped Yuta from the top rope and landed in a cross armbreaker. Shafir got up on the ring apron and Yuta raked the eyes behind the refs back. Yuta then hit a high knee and got the pin.

Match Result: Wheeler Yuta defeated Matt Mako

After the match, Yuta started jawing at Dean Rassmusen’s son, Eric. Eric didn’t back down and Yuta pulled him over the barricaade for a beatdown. Security pulled Yuta off of him and the segment ended.

Sammy Guevara, The Beast Mortos and Dralistico w/ Rush vs Cheeseburger, Eli Isom and Rhett Titus

Guevara and Titus started things off with Guevara giving up about 10 inches in vert to Titus. Dralistic decided he’d rather be in the match and tagged in, stomping Titus in the corner. Mortos then tagged in against Cheeseburger and as was appropriate, ate him.

In reality, he powerbombed him into next month, but it didn’t matter becuase a brawl with all six broke out with the LFI guys making short work of their opponents. Guevara stopped for a moment to pose and then Mortos and Isom fought.

Mortos hit a samoan drop on Isom and Guevara hit a shooting star press for the 1-2-3.

Match Result: Sammy Guevara, The Beast Mortos and Dralistico defeated Cheeseburger, Eli Isom and Rhett Titus

After the match, Mortos and Dralistico piled their opponents in the ring and Guevara grabbed a mic. He assured the crowd that Philadelphia sucks and Orlando is far superior. Guevara said that Dean’s favourite wrestlers were the members of LFI. Guevara put everyone on the back on notice that they were coming for all the titles. Then they beat up Titus, Isom and Cheeseburger some more.

-In the parking lot, Lee Johnson and Blake Christian assured everyone that The Swirl (ugh) are undefeated and undefeatable. Christian said that Bandido is an old chapter in a book that needs to be closed.

Hair Vs. Hair Match: Demus vs. Mad Dog Connelly

So if it’s not obvious, the winner of this match gets to cut the hair of the loser. Connelly looked like Dr Death Steve Williams in terms of his hair style and Demus was rocking a side-shaved mullet. So no matter who wins, someone’s hair is getting an improvement.

These two are pretty much what anyone would think of when the term “bruiser” came up. They immediately began throwing hamhocks with Connelly trying and early cover. He only got a two count though and ripped Demus’ shirt about it.

Connelly choked Demus with his own shirt, causing Demus to rake the eyes. The two battled on the outside with Demus being the first to introduce biting to the match. Connelly then used his own face as a weapon and head butted Demus into the steep steps (yes, you read that right). Connelly then drove him into the steps again, but on the third one, Demus reversed it giving Connelly a taste of his own medicine (spoiler, it tasted like steel).

Back in the ring, Connelly sent Demus into the corner for a splash, but Demus reversed it and raked the eye, followed by a crossbody from the top turnbuckle. Demus bent Connelly in half with a back chin lock and then chopped him in the corner. Demus then bit Connelly’s nipples. Again, you read that right.

Connelly hit a gutwrench slam, but it only got a two count. Connelly rolled out of the ring to get his thoughts together and grab a chair from under the ring. He pounded Demus across the back with it and then set up the chair in the center of the ring. Sitting Demus down in it, he went for a cannon ball, but Demus moved and Connelly hit the chair.

Demus then returned the favour from earlier and hit Connelly with the chair. Demus got Connelly up for a power slam and climbed to the second turnbuckle. Demus hit a senton, but Connelly moved and laid Demus out with a piledriver.

Connelly went up top, but Demus grabbed him for a shoulderbreaker driver and tried a pin for a two-count. Demus went under the ring and grabbed a chain with two collars that they had previously used in a match. Demus got the collar on Connelly and Demus used the chain to literally hang him from the ropes.

Connelly tried to fight back, but it was too much and he passed out on the ring apron (the hariest part of the ring!).

Match Result: Demus defeated Mad Dog Connelly

After the match, Demus called for some clippers and tried to shave Connelly’s head. Connelly had recovered at this point and pushed him away, grabbing the clippers. Connelly began screaming and shaving his own head, not giving Demus the pleasure. Demus grabbed a handful of shaved hair as a trophy and celebrated.

ROH Pure Title Match: Lee Moriarty (c) vs. Josh Woods

Josh Woods held the ROH Pure title for 201 days, but Moriarty has been champion for more than double that, at 413 days, the longest reign ever. Moriarty arrived with the ROH Trios Champions, Shane Taylor Promotions.

To get everyone up to speed, in Pure Rules matches, each competitor gets three rope breaks, then they can be pinned or submitted under the ropes. Each gets one closed-fist warning and any outside interference results in an automatic DQ. Also, the title can change hands on a DQ. If there’s no winner at the time limit (in this case, one hour), a panel of judges will decide the outcome.

Woods and Moriarty worked around the ring, neither one getting a solid hold on the other. Woods sent Moriarty to ther corner, but Moriarty bounced out and pulled him over with an arm drag. Moriarty began working Woods arm and looked for a border city strech early. Woods rolled him into the ropes, causing the ref to decide Woods used a rope break at 57:40.

Woods responded with a gorilla lock, forcing Moriarty to use a rope break at 56:47, evening things up. Moriarty went back to the arm of Woods and the two struggled to lock in an armbar. Woods sent Moriarty into the corner and hung him up on the ropes. He then hit a gutwrench stuplex for a to count.

Woods’ strategy seemed to be the work the midsection of Moriarty, wrapping him in the ropes and peppered him with strikes. He then tried to get Moriarty in a submission, but he was already on the ropes, so Moriarty was docked a second rope break at 54:49.

Moriarty tried the same tactic on Woods and forced him to use a rope break at 52:53. Moriarty then started working to put him away with some big slams, forearms and pinning combinations. Moriarty put a cross armbreaker on Woods in the center of the ring. Woods tried to power out, but Moriarty switched to a triangle.

Woods stood up while still in the triangle and dropped Moriarty to the floor with a powerbomb. He then hit a twisting suplex and went for a pin 1-2-3!

But! Moriarty’s foot was under the ropes, so it did not count. It did cost Moriarty his last rope break though, so when Woods put him in an ankle lock, Moriarty grabbing the ropes did nothing. Moriarty rolled Woods up into a bridge pin and managed to hold him long enough to get the pin.

Match Result: Lee Moriarty defeated Josh Woods

After the match, STP came down to the ring to celebrate with Moriarty. Woods shook his hand and bowed out as Shane Taylor grabbed a mic. He said that all of STP should have been on the card tonight. As a “problem solver” Taylor said he wasn’t leaving until ACTION sent him someone to beat up.

With that, AR Fox arrived and I guess it was time for a match!

Shane Taylor vs AR Fox

Fox got the drop on Taylor off the top, sending him out of the ring. Fox then hit two big dives on him and went for a kick flip moonsault. Taylor caught him in midair though and threw Fox into the barricade repeatedly.

Taylor threw Fox back into the ring and Fox tried to throw som jabs. Taylor responded with a lariat that sent Fox back in time. Taylor then threw him across the ring and stalked over to him. Fox tried to bring the fight back, but Taylor grabbed him an hit a massive chokeslam. Taylor went for a leg drop, but Fox rolled out of the way.

They started trading punches, with Taylor coming out on top. Taylor went for another lariat, but Fox matrix’ed out of it. Fox hit a splash on Taylor in the corner and knocked him down with some elbows. Taylor crawled back up and Fox walked right into some hard chops.

Fox used the barricade as a launching point and hit a stunner on the ring apron. He pushed taylor back into the ring and went for a pin, but only got a two count. Fox went up for a 450, but Taylor rolled out of the way and puched him with a knockout blow, getting the pin and the victory.

Match Result: Shane Taylor defeated AR Fox

**********

Thursday and 7pm EST arrived precisely when they meant to and Episode 80 of Ring of Honor on Honor Club arrived with ’em! And it arrived hot! Kinda…

Rocky Romero defeated Aaron Solo

Rocky Romero is a wrestler who works at ROH/AEW. Aaron Solo is also employed as a wrestler for ROH/AEW. That seemed to be pretty much the only reason that these two locked up. It was a little surprising to see this match kick off such a jam-packed show, but it gave these two a chance to show the kind of workers they are.

Solo was a little lighter on his feet and managed to trade holds with Romero until Romero got a little silly and began tapping the back of Solo’s head. Romero started taking Solo seriously though as Solo was able to get some lighthearted taps of his own in.

According to Ian Riccaboni, Solo is one of the top contenders for the ROH TV Title, so a win over Romero would help his case in the regard. That showed as Solo controlled the pace of the match until Romero caught him in a abdominal stretch. Romero held his own, bringing some energy to the match and going for high-impact offence like hurricanranas and multiple big back elbows in the corner.

Solo hit a double stomp from the top rope, but it wasn’t enough to put Romero down. Romero answered back with a super bulldog off the top rope! That put Solo on his back, and Romero was able to get the pin and win the match.

-In the back, Lady Frost cut a promo. She claimed her last match was too easy. She wants a shot at the Women’s World TV Title and called out Red Velvet asking for a Proving Ground match.

Lee Johnson defeated Nick Comoroto (w/Jacoby Watts)

This match was taped prior to Comoroto getting injured and having to step back until well into next year. That said, it was a bittersweet match for the big man, but up against Moriarty, it was going to be a good one. Johnson nearly became ROH TV Champion on two occasions this year, so he was not just going to lay down.

Watts slapped Comoroto to, motivate him? I guess? Johnson took advantage and sent Comoroto out of the ring. The big man fought back though, sending Johnson into the ring post head first, like so many Rey Mysterios being “lawn-darted” by the NWO.

Back in the ring, Comoroto’s size was becoming a problem for Johnson. Comoroto whipped Johnson from post to post, hurting is lower back. Watts got involved to the chagrin of the crowd and Johnson looked like he was about to give up a rare loss. Everytime Johnson would start a comeback, Comoroto clubbed him back down to his feet.

Johnson finally countered a suplex into one of his own, sending Comoroto crashing into the mat. It didn’t last long though as Comoroto regained the momentum. But then Watts got up in the ring apron and distracted Comoroto enough to allow Johnson to get a quick rollup and the win.

After the match, Comoroto and Watts started a beatdown on Johnson, but EJ Nduka arrived from the crowd to make the save and send the heels running.

-Afterwards, there was an announcement from Tony Khan: Tonight, Red Velvet would face Lady Frost in a Proving Ground match, just like she asked!

Rachael Ellering defeated Gigi Rey

Ellering lost last week to RevPro Women’s Champion Mina Shirakawa in a hard fought battle, so this week she was looking to get that momentum back on her side. Ellering has also been dealing with a snarky Harley Cameron lurking about, insulting her fashion sense.

Rey actually had Ellering on her heels off the top of the match. Rey worked the arm, but Ellering was able to reverse it, causing Rey to re-reverse it. Rey made a mistake when she tried to outpower Ellering, and found herself on the receiving end of a big shoulder tackle for her trouble.

From there, the aggression of Ellering was unleashed. Lots of hard strikes and devastating kicks. Rye tried to use her speed to get one over on Ellering, but Ellering’s experience and strength were too much for her. A spinning Bosswoman slam took out Rey for good, giving Ellering the win.

Anthony Henry & BEEF defeated Jay Lucas & Terry Yaki

Yeah, you read that right: BEEF vs Terry Yaki. But, ridiculous names aside, in his last outing with his cousin Henry, Beef showed some skill that led us to believe he’s not just a wild, sweaty fan at heart.

The crowd chanted “Beef!” as the match began. Henry sent his cousin to the outside and started things off. As soon as the bell rang, Beef hit a blind tag so that he got to start things off against Lucas. Beef’s enthusiasm and strength had him in control, but also caused him to make rookie mistakes when facing Yaki, who double teamed him, isolating him from Henry.

Eventually, Beef powered through and brought Yaki to his and Henry’s corner, tagging in his cousin. Henry worked the neck of Yaki like a horse (see what I did there?) and then the same against Lucas. Beef called for the tag and immediately tried to pin Lucas, which confused Henry who was expecting a double team.

Henry and Beef started to miscommunicate, missing tags and moves. Beef begged for a tag and Henry obliged. Beef climbed the ring post and delivered a big splash on Lucas to get the pin. Henry was happy they won, but a little concerned about Beef’s over-enthusiasm, leaving up the ramp to let him celebrate in the ring.

Spanish Announce Project (Angelico & Serpentico) defeated Iron Savages (Boulder & Bronson) (w/Jacked Jameson)

This match pitted some really high-energy and beefy citizens of Titty City against the smooth and laid back jams of the Spanish Announce Project. It was an interesting clash of styles with the winners inching ever closer to a shot at Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara’s ROH Tag Titles.

Jameson did a great Scott Steiner ’99 promo on the way down to the ring that was full of energy and catchphrases, but made no sense whatsoever. Angelico kicked things off against Bronson and right away it was a great juxtaposition of speed and agility vs brawn and brutality.

Angelico had the upper hand, but while he was admiring it, he got punched in the face. Serpentico tagged in and so did Boulder, bringing in the fastest man int he match vs the strongest man in the match. Serpentico managed to avoid the big man at first, but was caught between a Boulder and a Bronson place. he ducked and the two Savaged collided though, dazing themselves. Jameson took the opportunity to throw Serpentico at the barricade on the outside.

Back in the ring, Boulder hit a big splash on Serpentico, but Angelico broke up the pin. Serpentico got a hot tag into Angelico who cleared the ring. Angelico hit a flatliner on Bronson and Serpentico followed it up with a big frog splash, but it only got a two count. Angelico got a toehold on Bronson and flipped him over, causing Bronson to tap out.

PROVING GROUND MATCH: ROH Women’s Television Champion Red Velvet defeated Lady Frost

This surprise match was booked by Tony Khan himself earlier in the evening. If Frost could last 10 minutes or pin the Champion, she would earn a shot at Velvet’s ROH Women’s TV Title. Winning a Proving Ground match would be huge for Frost.

The two were pretty evenly matched with neither women getting the jump on the other off the top and each move being met with a countermove. Frost kept the pace of the match slow, knowing that the clock was on her side. All she had to do was last 10 minutes and she’d get her title shot. Velvet seemed unconcerned with the time, and seemed to be taking her opponent seriously, but meticulously.

Frost began to overpower Velvet with some handspring strikes in the corner. Frost locked in a chinlock with Velvet in the middle of the ring, eating up more time. Velvet reversed it into an abdominal stretch, taking more time off the clock.

Frost landed a standing moonsault, but only got a two count. Frost planted Velvet with a cartwheel powerbomb, but again, only two. Velvet hit a hip-toss neckbreaker out of nowhere and the two rolled around in pinning combinations until Velvet finally got the three-count on Frost, dashing her title hopes.

-Taya Valkyrie joined us backstage and hyped up her match later with Mina Shirakawa. Valkyrie was offended by Shirakawa being in ROH. That brought out the RevPro Women’s champ herself who shook her money makers at Valkyrie who walked off in a huff.

Lance Archer & The Righteous (Dutch & Vincent) defeated Lights. Camera. Faction.

When last we saw Archer, he was beating up someone named “Ozzy” for reasons known only to him. Tonight, he re-joins his compatriots Dutch and Vincent. These three haven’t exactly been known to follow rules and seem more interested in hurting their opponents, so who knows what we would get here.

No one bothered to mention the names of the members of Lights Camera Faction, so the one I’ll call Lights* kicked things off against Vincent. He didn’t last long though as Archer tagged in, terrifying his opponents. He no sold some strikes from Camera** before absolutely levelling him. That brought in Dutch and Faction*** who dutch laid out and setup Orange Sunshine. Archer delivered a Black out to Faction and scored the pin.

Another great match for this trio, even though it was somewhat pointless and chaotic.

*His name was Watson. **Real name Ice Williams. ***They never said his real name.

Diamante defeated Tiara James

In another unannounced matchup, Diamante took on James in a singles bout. Diamante planted James on her fast about thirty seconds into the match to get the pin in a textbook squash.

Diamante beat up James a bit after the match, but Red Velvet made a triumphant return from 15 minutes ago to break it up and run Diamante off.

-Lee Johnson was interviewed backstage about EJ Nduka saving him from Comoroto and Watts. Johnson called him a friend and NDuka joined him in a sweet Kylo Ren t-shirt. Nduka said that he was The Judge and Johnson getting jumped after matches was over because he was here to protect his back.

Griff Garrison (w/Maria) defeated Angelo Parker

Two men without their tag team partners went head to head in this singles bout. The wild(est) card would of course be Maria. She no longer has Serpentico’s mask to keep her company, so she pushed Garrison hard to win this match and give them a reason to keep going.

Garrison tried to mock Parker for being short (which was kind of laughable as he only had about an inch of height on him) and Parker took that opportunity to kick him in the shins. Garrison responded with some stiff uppercuts, driving Parker into the corner while Maria chirped on the outside.

Garrison seemed to have everything under control, peppering Parker with suplexes and chops, as well as taking some pinning liberties. Parker managed to dodge Garrison and deliver a big clothesline and running neckbreaker. Parker hit a big elbow on Garrison and Maria jumped up on the apron. She pretended to toss her boot in the ring, and while the ref was distracted she hit Parker with the other one.

Garrison capitalized and pinned the dazed Parker, 1-2-3.

The Premier Athletes (Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese) (w/Mark Sterling) defeated Joe Alonzo & Josiah Jean

Mark Sterling has been pushing the Premier Athletes down our throats the last few weeks. Singles matches, Tag matches, anything to get his team some airtime. Unfortunately, this hasn’t led to a lot of wins, with Nese losing to Lio Rush and Daivari taking a pin from The Conglomeration’s Tomohiro Ishii last week.

Nese started thing off by throwing Alonzo to the mat as if he was a bag of feathers. Nese dragged him to Daivari in the corner and the two double teamed Alonzo. Nese and Daivari had the advantage of being teammates and their cohesion was hard for Alonzo and Jean to get around.

Jean tried to help his partner but was clothselined to the outside for his trouble. A lawn dart cutter combo led to a big splash from Daivari and a pin to get the Premier Athletes the win.

John Silver (w/Alex Reynolds & Evil Uno) defeated Fuego Del Sol

The Dark Order has been cranky as heck the last few weeks, furious that Dustin Rhodes and the Von Erichs have been able to hold on to their ROH Six-Man tag titles. With Del Sol working “Del Solo” (sorry, I had to), it was pretty much three on one before the match even started.

After a very tender Code of Honor, the two locked up with Del Sol coming out on top and Silver sliding out of the ring to get some advice from Uno and Reynolds. Del Sol hit a big moonsault on Uno and Reynolds to break up the party and brought things back into the ring with Silver.

Silver got the momentum on his side with a series of kicks, but Del Sol wasn’t done yet. He fought back until Silver silenced him with a suplex. He then locked in a chinlock to try and get Del Sol to tap, but no dice as the luchadore fought out and delivered some European uppercuts in the corner.

Silver used his power to catch Del Sol and suplex him. Del Sol fought back with a stomp to the head though and set up a tornado DDT. Reynolds got involved, distracting everyone so Uno could attack from behind unnoticed. Once the ring cleared, Silver hit a spinning backbreaker and pinned Del Sol for the win.

Abadon defeated Rache Chanel

Abadon has had her spooky sights on the ROH Women’s Championship, and the woman who forever-holds it, Athena. She’s driven legit fear into the heart of the champion on more than one occasion, so the notion of Athena looking to spread some fear of her own was on everyone’s mind as the match kicked off.

Chanel, a Reality of Wrestling regular, had a ton of experience, but had never faced anything quite like Abadon. Right off the tip, Abadon rained down big punches. Chanel wasn’t able to get any kind of momentum in against Abadon, with the Living Dead Girl no-selling all of Chanel’s offense.

Abadon hit a devastating cutter and a Black Dahlia to pin Chanel and get the win.

Katsuyori Shibata defeated Josh Woods (w/Mark Sterling)

Last week, Woods, the lone singles winner amongst the Premier Athletes lately, easily defeated Barrett Brown. Tonight though, he’d be looking down the barrel of a former ROH Pure Champion in Shibata. “The Wrestler” was a specifically boring create-a-wrestler I used to make in Wrestlemania 2000, but in this case the name means action, speed and much more when applied to Shibata.

The two locked up and Woods’ strategy seemed to be to keep Shibata off his feet. The two engaged in a really fun technical swapping of holds and moves, with Shibata coming out on top, locking in an arm hold on Woods. A frustrated Woods knocked Shibata to the outside, where Sterling contributed a stomp or two.

Woods tossed the smaller Shibata back into the ring and began stomping a Texas-sized mudhole on him in the corner. Shibata switched on the aggression and managed to reverse Woods into the corner and hit a big dropkick. Shibata went for a suplex, but Woods reversed it, regaining control of the action.

Woods tried to overpower Shibata, landing a big backbreker. Shibata reversed a suplex into a sleeper though and Sterling jumped up to cause a distraction. Shibata ran him off and hit an STO on Woods followed by a cross armbreaker, causing Woods to tap out.

Mina Shirakawa defeated Taya Valkyrie (w/Johnny TV)

This Main Event match was a grudge match, the grudge of which started last week. As Shirakawa was celebrating her win over Rachael Ellering, Valkyrie attached the Stardom star, leaving her lying in the ring. Tonight, Shirakawa was looking for revenge, but the fly in the ointment was Valkyrie’s husband, the one and only Johnny TV.

Shirakawa’s dancing seemed to enrage Valkyrie, which in her defense, there was a lot of it. Valkyrie sent Shirakawa to the corner for some big stomps, putting her on her heels right from the start. Valkyrie dig into her bag of dirty tricks early, biting the arm of Shirakawa, who fought back with some big spine kicks.

Putting her Stardom experience to use, Shirakawa worked the knee of Valkyrie, leaving her hobbling and trying to get a quick pin. Moving from leg to leg, Shirakawa locked in a figure four on Valkyrie who pulled herself to the ropes to break it.

Valkyrie took control of the match, clubbing and pounding on Shirakawa while TV cheered her on. Stopping for a quick makeout on the outside with TV, Valkyrie tried to throw Shirakawa into the barricade, but Shirakawa ducked it and headed back to the ring.

Valkyrie slowed the pace right down, hanging Shirakawa on the ropes, bit it was a possum play as Shirakawa was able to grab Valkyrie’s leg when she came in for a kick. On the outside a miscommunication between husband and wife saw TV and Valkyrie crash into each other, giving Shiarakawa a chance to hit a big splash on them both from the top rope.

Back in the ring, Shirakawa hit a massive kick on Valkyrie’s jaw, but Valkyrie, favouring her leg, responded with a big lariat. Shirakawa set up Valkyrie for a big splash from the top of the ringpost, but only got a two count. Valkyrie poppe dup and hit a spear, followed by a blue thunder bomb for a two-count.

Valkyrie tried to get Shirakawa up for a surfboard, but Shirakawa reversed it into a second Figure Four. She held it on Valkyrie in the middle of the ring until Valkyrie was forced to tap. As the TV family slunk away Shirakawa celebrated with the crowd as the show when off the air.

ROH World Title Match – Claudio Castagnoli (c) defeated Rocky Romero

This was Castagnoli’s tenth title defense.

The announcers talked about how Romero could throw a spanner in both Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston’s plans, as Romero would defend the title against Kingston at Dynamite: Grand Slam if he won here. Romero sent Castagnoli to the floor with a headscissors. Romero hit a pair of dives before Castagnoli cut off a third dive with an uppercut. Castagnoli sent Romero into the top turnbuckle with a Gorilla Press before dropping him with a big boot for a nearfall.

Romero tried fighting back with a rewind kick, but Castagnoli caught him in the Giant Swing for ten revolutions. Romero sent Castagnoli to the floor with another headscissors before sending Castagnoli over the vacant Collision announce desk with a dive. Romero hit a dropkick to Castagnoli while he was tied up in the ropes. Romero hit a tornado DDT for a nearfall.

Romero hit the rewind kick before landing a 619 and a Standing Sliced Bread for a nearfall. Romero went to the top rope, but Castagnoli cut him off with an uppercut. Romero knocked Castagnoli down and went for a crossbody, but Castagnoli caught him and hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall. Castagnoli clubbered Romero in the corner before hitting a short-arm lariat for a nearfall. Romero caught Castagnoli with a couple of flash pins, but Castagnoli cut off a Tornado DDT. He hit Swiss Death before landing another heavy European Uppercut for the win.

The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean) & Willie Mack defeated The Outrunners (Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd) & Kevin Ku

The Infantry and Mack held firm control, with Dean hitting a dive onto all three of his opponents. The Outrunners cut him off while he was getting in the ring, allowing their team to take control of him. The Outrunners and Ku took time to pose, allowing Bravo to tag in and run wild. Mack tagged in and traded elbows with Ku. Ku landed a heavy kick, but Mack came back with a pop-up forearm and a Stunner before the Infantry hit their move for the win.

Lexy Nair was backstage with Ethan Page. Page said that he’s let his ego take control of his career, chasing the money and losing his competitive edge. He doesn’t know who he is anymore, but he knows who he wants to be. He’s here in Ring of Honor to prove it to the people and to himself.

Mercedes Martinez defeated Zoey Lynn

This match was dominated by Martinez. Lynn made a short comeback that got cut off with a main event spinebuster. Martinez had the win but pulled Lynn up to hit a rabbit forearm. Martinez locked on the Brass City Stretch to win by submission.

Gates Of Agony (Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona) (w/Prince Nana) defeated Cole Radrick & Matt Brannigan

Kaun quickly hammered Brannigan before menacing Radrick off of the apron. Radrick tried running away, but Liona pounced him into the barricade. Liona and Kaun quickly ended things after flapjacking Radrick into Brannigan.

We got a video package recapping the history between Athena & Billie Starkz. After that, we got Lexy Nair in the back with Starkz. Nair gave Starkz a to-do list from Athena to be done before Athena came back in two weeks. Starkz initially balked, but after Nair reminded her that Athena would take it out on the both of them, Starkz decided to get it done. This story is very silly.

Darius Martin defeated Christopher Daniels

The two went back and forth to start before Daniels dumped Martin on his head with a back suplex. Daniels cut off a Martin springboard before leg dropping him off of the ropes for a nearfall. Daniels spun Martin around with a lariat. Daniels went for the uranage, but Martin turned it into an armdrag.

Martin fired up, but Daniels cut him off again, catching him in a Koji Clutch. Martin backdropped his way free of the Angel’s Wings, and after a pinning predicament, Martin held Daniels for a three count for the win.

Shane Taylor defeated Lee Johnson

Johnson tried bouncing around to gain advantage on Taylor before Taylor dropped him with a punch. Taylor flung Johnson across the ring multiple times before sending him into the barricade. Taylor hit an apron legdrop for a one count, then leveled Johnson with a lariat for a nearfall. Johnson tried fighting back, but Taylor headbutted him. A pull-up uranage followed by a splash only got a two count for Taylor.

Johnson came back, dropping Taylor to a knee after a pop-up dropkick. Taylor hit a pendulum DDT for a nearfall. Johnson went to the top rope before Lee Moriarty appeared at ringside to distract him. Taylor hit the Marcus Garvey Driver for the hometown win. Taylor shook hands with Moriarty before they left together.

Willow Nightingale defeated Lady Frost

Nightingale held serve until Frost ducked an enzuigiri. Frost cartwheeled off of Nightingale’s back before hitting a big kick for a nearfall. Frost kept control before running into a Pounce from Nightingale. Nightingale rocked Frost with short-arm lariats before landing an enzuigiri for a nearfall. Frost hit a hurricane kick before going for the Frostbite moonsault for a nearfall. Nightingale cut off Frost with a main event spinebuster before hitting the Babe With The Powerbomb for the win.

Lexy Nair was backstage with Shane Taylor & Lee Moriarty. Taylor said that he and Shane Taylor Promotions have carried Ring of Honor for years, and now it’s time for him to start making history. He officially introduced Moriarty as the newest member of Shane Taylor Promotions. I’m interested in this pairing.

Josh Woods (w/Mark Sterling) defeated Dominic Garrini

This wasn’t a Pure Rules match, but this still had a technical flair to it with both men having similar styles. They traded gutwrenches and wristlocks before Woods sent Garrini flying with suplexes. Woods hit the Anarchist Suplex for the quick win.

Ethan Page defeated Griff Garrison

Garrison hit a big splash in the corner while Maria Kanellis-Bennett & Cole Karter watched from the stage. Page hit a stalling suplex for a nearfall. Garrison hit a big boot and a knee drop to take control. Page cut off Garrison on the top rope and hit a powerslam for a nearfall. Garrison slipped out of the Ego’s Edge and hit a rolling elbow for a nearfall. Page came back with an outside-in cutter to score the win.

The WorkHorsemen (Anthony Henry & JD Drake) defeated The Boys (Brandon & Brent)

The Workhorsemen got a jump start on the match, but the Boys were able to evade corner attacks and isolate Henry for a moment. Drake got a blind tag in before Henry baited Brandon into a forearm. Drake hit a twisting Vader Bomb for a nearfall.

Henry and Drake worked over Brandon for a while before Brent eventually tagged in. They teamed up to take down Henry, but Drake proved to be too much to handle. A strike combination took out Brandon before a Henry double stomp took out Brent for the win.

Lexy Nair was backstage with Griff Garrison. He was quickly interrupted by Maria Kanellis-Bennett & Cole Karter. Bennett told Garrison that he had potential but needed to surround himself with like-minded people. There was then some humor about Maria’s pearl necklace.

AR Fox defeated Tony Nese (w/Mark Sterling)

You’ll never guess, but Tony Nese wanted to do group training. AR Fox interrupted, thus giving us our match. A quick back-and-forth exchange ended with Nese almost scoring the win with a roll-up with the tights for a nearfall. Fox caught Nese with a series of kicks before mockingly jumping jacks. Sterling tried to cut off Fox, but Fox kept control and hit a skin the cat dropkick in the corner for a nearfall.

Nese choked Fox in the ropes before hooking him over the top rope. Sterling got a few shots in while Nese distracted the referee. Nese brought Fox to the top rope and hit a rolling uppercut. Fox held onto the ropes on a hurricanrana attempt, but Nese came back with the spinning heel kick for a nearfall. Fox came back with a pendulum DDT in the ropes.

Fox fired up, hitting his walkthrough cutter for a nearfall. Nese countered another cutter with a German suplex for a nearfall. Nese went for the Running Nese, but Fox moved. Fox got Nese to the top rope and hit Lo Mein Pain for the win.

NJPW World Television Title Match – Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Metalik to retain the title

This was Sabre’s 12th defence of the title.

If this matchup looks familiar, it’s because these two wrestled in the semifinals of WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic back in 2016. Sabre hunted for submissions early, but Metalik was able to slip away and standoff with Sabre. Sabre offered a handshake before turning it into a wristlock. Metalik picked up the pace by hooking Sabre’s arm and hitting a step-up hurricanrana.

They jostled for position on a hip toss, but Sabre hooked the arm and cranked the bicep. Sabre focused on the arm, hitting a pair of bicep stomps while mouthing off to the crowd. Metalik used the good arm to hit an overhand chop before hitting two ropewalk dropkicks and a dive to Sabre on the floor. Metalik took Sabre back into the ring and hit a ropewalk crossbody for a nearfall.

Sabre came back with a La Mistica into a Cobra Twist that he took to the ground, but Metalik was able to squirm to the ropes. Sabre went back for the arm, but Metalik came back with a satellite DDT for a nearfall. They got into a pinning predicament before Metalik hit a thrust kick. Metalik went for a ropewalk elbow drop, but Sabre caught him in a Fujiwara armbar. Sabre hooked both of Metalik’s arms, forcing Metalik to submit with his foot.

Backstage, Lexy Nair was with Cole Karter & Maria Kanellis-Bennett. Nair asked Karter what he said to Griff Garrison last week. Karter said that Kanellis wanted to give Garrison an opportunity, with Kanellis noting that it would be good for Karter and Garrison to team up. Karter asked Kanellis to accompany him to ringside tonight, and after some reluctance, Kanellis agreed.

Josh Woods defeated John Walters

After both men worked to gain control of the other’s arm, Woods hooked Walters’ leg on a leapfrog and took him down. Walters went for a pair of pinfalls, but Woods caught him with a big running knee. Woods locked on his standing scorpion lock to score the win.

Lee Moriarty & The WorkHorsemen (Anthony Henry & JD Drake) defeated Beef, Invictus Khash & Lord Crewe

Moriarty and the WorkHorsemen got a jump start on their opponents. Khash hit a bodyslam on Moriarty, but Moriarty landed a knee to his back and tagged out to Henry. Crewe tagged in and caught Henry with a rollup, but Drake got a blind tag and hit a DDT. Crewe hit a hurricane kick on Henry before tagging in Beef, who ran wild on Moriarty. Beef caught nothing but canvas on a frog splash, allowing the WorkHorsemen to score the win with a foot stomp from Henry and a moonsault from Drake.

Cole Karter (w/Maria Kanellis-Bennett) defeated Dustin Jackson

Jackson sent Karter into the corner with a dropkick, but Karter caught him with two dropkicks of his own. Karter soon after hit the Eye of the Beholder DDT variant for the win.

Emi Sakura defeated Alice Crowley

Crowley brought the fight to Sakura, taking her down with a lucha arm drag. Sakura took Crowley down with a chop to the throat. Crowley moved out of the way of a Vader Bomb and fought back, but Sakura forced her into the corner with chops. Crowley fought out with a Perfect Plex for a nearfall. Sakura spun her out with a reverse Cross Rhodes. Sakura hit the Imperial Backbreaker for the win.

Backstage, Lexy Nair was with Josh Woods & Smart Mark Sterling. Sterling gave Woods the challenges he wanted before hyping up his accomplishments. He says that Woods will run the Pure Division.

Spanish Announce Project (Angelico & Serpentico) defeated The Outrunners (Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd)

Serpentico got the early advantage, keeping Magnum off balance with his offense. Angelico tagged in and hit a big kick to the back for a nearfall. Serpentico came back in and hit a thrust kick, but Magnum rolled out of the way and laid out Serpentico with a lariat.

The Outrunners clubbered on Serpentico before he got to the corner and tagged in Angelico. Angelico ran wild, catching Floyd in an STF that Magnum broke up. Serpentico sent Magnum to the floor, allowing Angelico to lock on a submission and score the win. I think this is the first win of Serpentico’s AEW career, but I’ll be sure to fact-check that one.

Marina Shafir defeated Angelica Risk

Risk went for…something before Shafir slammed her down. Shafir ripped Risk down with a pair of judo throws. Risk tried to throw some strikes, but Shafir booted her down. Shafir locked on a triangle choke for the win, hanging onto it after the bell.

ROH World Six Man Tag Team Title Match – The Mogul Embassy (Bishop Kaun, Brian Cage & Toa Liona) (w/Prince Nana) defeated Action Andretti, Darius Martin & Lee Johnson to retain the titles

Andretti, Martin, & Johnson did a great job of building up to their big nearfall, as I thought they had a chance to win the titles here.

The champs got a jump start, with Cage hitting an F-5 on Martin for a quick nearfall. Martin hit a rana to escape a powerbomb attempt, but Cage cut off an attempt at a tag with a lariat. Martin hit a tornado DDT before tagging into Johnson. Johnson rocked Cage with an enzuigiri and a superkick before hitting a big scoop and a slam. Kaun cut off Johnson’s momentum, allowing Cage to hit a neckbreaker out of the corner.

The Embassy clubbered on Johnson until he was able to make a tag out to Andretti. Andretti ran wild, taking out both Kaun and Liona. Andretti hit a Spanish Fly on Kaun for a nearfall. The match broke down into a Pier Six brawl, with the challengers isolating Kaun for a nearfall after an Andretti split-leg moonsault.

The challengers had a bigger challenge with Liona, but eventually worked him out of the ring. It was down to Cage, who got hit with a shotgun dropkick into a German suplex. Johnson hit a frog splash for a nearfall. They took out Nana with a triple superkick and Cage with a triple-team cutter, but Kaun cut off the pinfall. Kaun and Liona got back involved and quickly isolated Johnson, who they beat with a pendulum powerbomb.

Josh Woods vs. Silas Young added to next Ring of Honor TV

A Josh Woods vs. Silas Young singles match has been added to the lineup for the Thursday, August 17 Ring of Honor TV.

After being aligned with “Smart” MAark Sterling and The Varsity Athletes, Woods seemingly broke away from the group, but not Sterling on this week’s episode.

Woods declared his intention to break away from The Varsity Athletes on last week’s show, and Sterling agreed that it was time for a change for Woods in a backstage segment this week. He then told Woods that he had set up a match for him with Silas Young on next week’s show.

Woods vs. Young joins a lineup for August 17 that also includes a tag team bout with ROH World Television Champion Samoa Joe teaming with board of directors member Stokely Hathaway against The Boys.

Joe’s next title contender was also decided on this week’s Ring of Honor TV, as Shane Taylor won a title eliminator tournament.

The announced lineup for the August 17 Ring of Honor TV:

  • Samoa Joe & Stokely Hathaway vs. The Boys
  • Josh Woods vs. Silas Young

**********

Ian Ricabonni and Caprice Coleman welcome us to the show, running down the big card tonight featuring two title matches and the semifinals of the TV Title Eliminator tournament. One of those semifinals kicked off the show here.

ROH World Television Title Eliminator Tournament Semi-Final Match –Shane Taylor defeated Christopher Daniels

Daniels tried to bring down Taylor with wrestling moves, but Taylor used his size to block them before dropping Daniels with a left hand. Taylor dropped Daniels with a barge attack, then dropped Daniels with a lariat for a nearfall.

Taylor clubbered on Daniels before Daniels caught him with a neckbreaker. Daniels dodged a corner charge and hit a hurricanrana on Taylor, following up with a rabbit lariat for a nearfall. Taylor caught Daniels with a uranage, then followed it with a splash for a nearfall. Taylor went to the second rope and hit a crossbody, then hit the Marcus Garvey Driver for the win and the spot in the finals.

Earlier today, Lexy Nair was with the Iron Savages. They challenged Aussie Open for a title match, which they are getting right now.

ROH World Tag Team Title Match – Aussie Open (Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis) defeated The Iron Savages (Boulder & Bronson)

Aussie Open handed the title belts off to Stokely Hathaway and Tony Khan in the back before walking out. I appreciate the attention to detail, as this was taped before their title defense against Komander and El Hijo Del Vikingo on Dynamite last night.

Fletcher and Bronson started by trading elbows before Fletcher dropped Bronson with a bodyslam. Their partners tagged in, with Davis having trouble with the stronger Boulder. The Savages got the better of Aussie Open before Aussie Open sent them to the apron and dumped them to the floor. They picked up Bronson and tossed him into Boulder on the floor to take control.

Aussie Open clubbered on Bronson for a while before Bronson got the tag out to Boulder. Boulder ran wild, tossing both Davis and Fletcher around before hitting a tilt-a-whirl powerslam on Fletcher for a nearfall. Boulder went for a moonsault, but Fletcher moved out of the way and got the tag to Davis. Bronson entered the match and hit a Rikishi Driver on Fletcher on top of Davis. The Savages hit a double main event spinebuster for a nearfall.

The Savages went for their elevator slam, but Davis rolled into the Aussie Open corner, leading to Fletcher hitting a Doomsday Device on Bronson. Aussie Open hit the Dental Plan and Coreolis on Boulder to win the match and retain the titles.

Backstage, Aussie Open collected their titles from Tony Khan, bragging all the while.

Elsewhere backstage, Lexy Nair was with Stokely Hathaway. He thanked people for the praise for the TV Title #1 Contender Tournament before being interrupted by a miffed Dalton Castle. Castle blamed Hathaway for not winning the TV Title at Death Before Dishonor and being left out of the #1 Contender Tournament. They argue for a while until Samoa Joe entered the scene. Joe said that he would give Castle what he wanted. In two weeks, it will be…The Boys vs. Samoa Joe & Stokely Hathaway. Hathaway looked shocked, and Castle was still unhappy.

ROH Pure Title Match – Katsuyori Shibata (c) defeated Josh Woods (w/ Smart Mark Sterling)

The judges for this match were Jimmy Jacobs, Jerry Lynn, and former Pure Champion John Walters.

The men traded position before trading armbar and kneebar attempts. Both men were evenly matched on the mat, with Woods and his national championship pedigree matching Shibata’s New Japan dojo training and experience. They rolled to the floor in matching leg bars before Woods ducked a Penalty Kick on the floor. They locked horns with a collar and elbow tie-up on the floor to a 16-count before getting back into the ring and immediately re-engaging in the collar and elbow.

Woods blocked an O’Connor Roll attempt, with Sterling getting on the apron to argue that it shouldn’t count as a rope break. Woods used the distraction to gain control with a shoulder block and go to work on Shibata’s arm. Shibata sent Woods to the floor, but Woods baited Shibata into a chase and caught him with a short-arm scissors. Shibata rolled Woods up to escape, but Woods kicked out and hit an arm trap gutwrench suplex for a nearfall.

Woods hit a gutwrench powerbomb for a nearfall, then hit the Penalty Kick on Shibata. This woke Shibata up, who fired up with strikes. Shibata hit the hesitation dropkick and a suplex for a nearfall before drilling Woods with a mid-kick for another nearfall. Shibata locked on a sleeper hold, with Woods grabbing the ropes to escape. They traded suplexes before trading forearms, with Woods hitting forearms into the shoulder of Shibata. They hit matching pump kicks, with both men going down.

They traded more strikes before Woods booted Shibata’s arm. Woods went for a TKO, but Shibata landed on his feet and locked on the sleeper hold. Shibata hit the Penalty Kick to win and retain the title.

Dalton Castle defeated Zack Clayton

Clayton got a lot of offense to start, clubbering on Castle before sending him flying with an overhead suplex. Castle fought his way back, sending Clayton flying with suplexes of his own before hitting the Bangarang for the win.

Backstage, Lexy Nair was with Josh Woods, who had something to say. He ran down the opportunities he’s had so far in the new era of ROH, noting his losses in three title matches. He says that something has to change.

The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean) defeated Jora Johl & Nick Comoroto

The Infantry controlled Johl to start the match until Comoroto got involved on the apron and tagged in. They beat up on Bravo until Johl accidentally superkicked Comoroto, allowing Dean to tag in. Dean took care of Johl and sent Comoroto to the floor. They dropped Johl with a boot into a side Russian Leg Sweep for the win.

Leyla Hirsch defeated Miranda Vionette

Vionette fought out of a Gator Roll to get a pair of flash pins, but Hirsch hit a dropkick to the knee to cut her off. Maria Kanellis-Bennett came out to watch. Hirsch clubbered on Vionette before hitting a boot to the face. Hirsch pulled Vionette into a side suplex. Vionette had a short flurry of offense before Hirsch caught her in a cross armbreaker for the win.

ROH World Television Title Eliminator Tournament Semi-Final Match – Gravity defeated Tony Nese (w/Mark Sterling)

Nese did his usual leading group training before Gravity came out. Gravity came out with speed, sending Nese up and over with a lucha armdrag before gorilla pressing Nese. Sterling cut off a dive, allowing Nese to take control and send Gravity to the floor, where Sterling put the boots to him.

Gravity fought back with chops and sent Nese to the floor. Sterling went to cut him off again, but Gravity went to the corner and hit a double-jump dive to the floor. Gravity hung Nese in the ropes and hit a splash for a nearfall. Gravity elevated himself to the top rope, but Nese cut him off with a big uppercut. Nese hit the roll-through spin kick for a nearfall. Gravity hit a single-arm powerbomb out of a roll-up attempt, then followed it with a top-rope splash for the win. The tournament finals will be Gravity vs. Shane Taylor.

ROH Women’s World Title Match – Athena (c) defeated Diamante

Athena kept countering Diamante’s offense, with the crowd chanting her name. Diamante hit a set of dropkicks that sent Athena to the apron, where Diamante dropkicked her to the floor. Diamante tried to follow with a crossbody, but Athena caught her and slammed her to the floor. Athena picked Diamante up and flung her into the barricade.

Athena clubbered on Diamante, focusing on her midsection and back. Athena brought Diamante to the apron, where Diamante tried to reverse her into a suplex. Instead, Athena ran Diamante into the turnbuckle before hitting a back suplex on the apron.

Back in the ring, Diamante ducked some big strikes before firing up. She hit a monkey flip and a sliding lariat for a nearfall. Athena countered an around-the-world DDT with a backbreaker. Athena went to the top rope for the O Face, but Diamante caught her and hit the Chaos Theory for a nearfall. Diamante went to the second rope, but Athena booted her down and locked on a crossface. Athena rolled Diamante to the middle of the ring, but Diamante rolled her into a pin for a nearfall. Athena hit a superkick and rolled Diamante up to win and retain the title.

Gates Of Agony (Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona) (w/Prince Nana) defeated The Boys (Brandon & Brent)

Kaun started with Brent, sending him inside out with a lariat. The Gates clubbered on Brent, with Nana joining in while the referee was distracted. Brent evaded his way to the corner to make a tag out to Brandon, who ran wild until Liona wouldn’t budge on an Irish whip. Kaun pulled Brent to the floor, allowing Liona to send Brandon through the mat with a Samoan Drop. The Gates hit their tag team facebuster for the win.

Backstage, Lexy Nair was with Diamante. Lexy asked why Athena didn’t beat her up after the match. Athena entered the scene and told Diamante that she had talent but was missing something to reach the champ’s level. She told Diamante to stay away from her and figure it out.

Cole Karter defeated LSG

Karter got a jump start on LSG to start the match, ringing him up on the ropes and hitting a lariat. Karter controlled the match as Maria Kanellis-Bennett watched on the ramp. LSG slipped out of a powerbomb and fired up, but Karter cut him off on a springboard attempt with a jumping knee. Karter hit a DDT for the win.

In video from Death Before Dishonor, The Righteous began to speak before The Dark Order came in. Evil Uno shook hands with Stu Grayson, with Vincent only saying, “Finally.”

Robyn Renegade (w/ Charlette Renegade) defeated Christina Marie

Marie controlled the match early on, hitting bodyslams until Renegade rolled to the floor. Marie avoided an elbow drop back in the ring, but Charlette sent Marie into the post to get her sister in control. Renegade hit a shotgun dropkick and a low dropkick for a nearfall. Marie caught Renegade with a roll-up for a nearfall, but Renegade hit her with a lariat. Marie fired up with strikes, but Renegade locked on a seated Octopus Stretch for the win.

Vikingo hit a hurricane kick to Henry, but Henry knocked Komander off the apron. Drake hit a shining wizard on Vikingo for a nearfall. Vikingo rolled through a powerbomb into a Code Red before making the tag out to Komander.

Komander ran wild, sending both WorkHorsemen to the floor. Vikingo tagged back in, but Henry cut off a dive attempt. The WorkHorsemen hit combo offense on Vikingo, but Komander broke up the pin. They sent the WorkHorsemen to the floor, then both hit ropewalk moonsaults to the floor. Vikingo and Komander then hit dual 450 splashes to Drake, with Vikingo getting the pin and the win.

Women’s title match announced for Ring of Honor TV lineup

The Ring of Honor Women’s Championship will be on the line when Athena defends against Diamante on Thursday’s ROH on HonorClub.

Athena defeated Christina Marie in a Proving Ground match last week before cutting a promo backstage where she told Lexy Nair that she wants the women in the ROH locker room to step up because she’s getting bored.

On a two-match winning streak, Diamante last appeared on ROH TV in June when she beat Vanessa Kraven.

The ROH Pure Title will also be on the line this week as Katsuyori Shibata will put his belt on the line against Josh Woods in a Pure Rules match in a previously announced match. Woods defeated Eli Isom last week while Shibata is coming off a successful title defense against Daniel Garcia at Death Before Dishonor.

Thursday will also see two ROH TV Title Eliminator Tournament matches. The first will be between Gravity and Tony Nese. Gravity looks to get back on the winning side of things after he lost to ROH TV Champion Samoa Joe Saturday on AEW Collision.

Pure title match announced for next week’s Ring of Honor TV

A Pure Championship match is set for the Thursday, August 3 episode of Ring of Honor TV.

As announced during this week’s show, Katsuyori Shibata will defend the ROH Pure title against Josh Woods on next week’s episode.

Woods defeated Eli Isom in a Pure Rules match on this week’s episode in a bout where Shibata served as one of the judges. After the contest, “Smart” Mark Sterling issued a challenge to Shibata on Woods’ behalf, and the Champion accepted. The match was announced for next week’s show.

Shibata defeated Wheeler Yuta to win the Pure title at Supercard of Honor on March 31 of this year and has since defended the title against Christopher Daniels, Alex Coughlin, Lee Moriarty, and Daniel Garcia.

After defeating Garcia at Death Before Dishonor last Friday, Shibata spoke of his desire to set the record for longest Pure title reign. Shibata’s reign currently stands at 119 days, well short of Nigel McGuinness’s record 350-day reign in 2005 and 2006.

Ring of Honor TV live results: The fallout from Death Before Dishonor

The fallout from last Friday’s Death Before Dishonor will be felt on tonight’s Ring of Honor on HonorClub.

After successfully defending the Six-Man titles last Friday, The Mogul Embassy (Brian Cage, Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona) will defend against the Iron Savages & Jacked Jameson.

Former champions Dalton Castle and The Boys (Brandon & Brent Tate) will face The Trustbusters (Sonny Kiss, Jeeves Kay & Slim J).

ROH Women’s Champion Athena will be in non-title action against Christina Marie, Trish Adora will battle Trish San Antonio, and Leyla Hirsch will take on B3CCA.

Ahead of their match on Rampage, The Kingdom will face Rhett Titus & Tracy Williams.

Josh Woods takes on Eli Isom in a Pure rules match as he pursues a future opportunity against Pure Champion Katsuyori Shibata.

Big Bill will continue his recent tag team run as he will reunite with Lee Moriarty against opponents to be named.

**********

This week’s ROH was taped last Saturday in Newark, New Jersey as part of the AEW Collision taping. Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman were on the call.

We got a recap of Death Before Dishonor, highlighting every match.

Pure Rules Match – Josh Woods (w/The Varsity Athletes) defeated Eli Isom

The judges for this match were Jerry Lynn, Jimmy Jacobs, and Pure Champion Katsuyori Shibata – who got his own entrance.

Woods tied up Isom in the ropes, forcing his first use of a rope break. They jockeyed for position until Woods booted Isom on an up-and-over in the corner. Woods focused his attack on Isom’s arm. Woods tried to Irish whip Isom, who hooked the ropes and thus used his second rope break.

Woods did more work on the arm until Isom began forearming Woods to fight back. Woods laid in the forearms to Isom’s arm, but Isom hit an offensive flurry that sent Woods into the corner. Woods walked into a Blue Thunder Bomb, but Isom only got a one count on it. Woods hit a Chaos Theory that transitioned into an armbar, forcing Isom to use his third rope break. Woods sent Isom onto the apron, caught him in a sleeper hold, then dragged him into the ring. Woods then hit a Penalty Kick, while looking at Shibata, before locking in the Gorilla Lock to win.

After the match, Smart Mark Sterling talked trash to Shibata before laying out the challenge for next week. Shibata got in the ring and stared down Woods, accepting the title challenge for next week.

Backstage, Lexy Nair spoke to Trish Adora and asked her what was next after her loss to Leyla Hirsch at the Death Before Dishonor Zero Hour. Adora said that she would have let this get her down a year ago, but now that she’s part of the Infantry, she’s focused on bouncing back.

Trish Adora defeated Vita Vonstarr

Vonstarr is a former member of the Righteous. Adora focused on the arm before locking in a submission that Vonstarr used her flexibility to get out of. Vonstarr hit a Northern Lights suplex for a nearfall before locking on an Octopus Stretch. Adora spun Vonstarr out with a backbreaker before firing up, hitting a big boot and a senton for a nearfall.

Vonstarr avoided the Lariat Tubman and hit the Michinoku Driver for a nearfall. Adora followed up with a successful Lariat Tubman for the win.

ROH World Six Man Tag Team Title Match – The Mogul Embassy (Bishop Kaun, Brian Cage & Toa Liona) (w/Prince Nana) (c) defeated The Iron Savages (Boulder & Bronson & Jacked Jameson)

This was fun and energetic, with the Embassy seeing a much different type of challenge than they are used to seeing.

Cage started with Bronson, dropping him with a back elbow. Bronson came back with a bodyslam before the Savages triple-teamed Cage in the corner. Cage hit a strike flurry on Jameson to take back control before tagging in Kaun. Jameson tagged out to Bronson, who hit a dive onto Cage and squished Liona on the apron. That left him open to a dropkick from Kaun into a powerbomb on the floor from Liona.

The champions clubbered on Bronson, hitting a strike train that ended with Cage’s apron superplex for a nearfall. Bronson sat down on a sunset flip by Cage before tagging out to Boulder, who ran wild on the Embassy. He dropped Cage and Kaun with a double flapjack. Boulder and Liona faced off, with Boulder taking Liona down with a jumping shoulder block. Boulder dropped Kaun with a powerslam for a nearfall.

Boulder went for a moonsault but missed. The match broke down into a Pier Six brawl, ending with Bronson hitting a Sky High for a nearfall. Liona cut Boulder down with a knee on a crossbody attempt, and Cage took down Bronson with a spinning lariat. The Embassy isolated Jameson, with Kaun hitting a Pedigree to score the win.

Leyla Hirsch defeated Becca

Ian Riccaboni mentioned that his four-year-old daughter’s favorite wrestler was Leyla Hirsch. I figure it’s because they’re the same height, but that’s beside the point. Hirsch took Becca down with a lariat and a gutwrench suplex. After fighting out of a waist lock, Becca fought back with the crowd behind her. Becca hit a shotgun dropkick but missed a missile dropkick off the top rope. Hirsch hit a German suplex and a running knee to score the win.

Backstage, Lexy Nair was with Athena. Athena wanted more competition, ragdolling Lexy around while doing so. She said if Lexy didn’t get her more competition, she would take it out on Lexy.

The Renegades (Charlette Renegade & Robyn Renegade) defeated JC & Tiara James

James looked good in her 30-second flurry here.

Charlette started with JC, who fought off both Renegades to start until she got tripped up by Robyn. The Renegades hit a double suplex on JC for a nearfall. The Renegades clubbered on JC until she slipped out of another double suplex attempt and made the tag to James. James ran wild on them until Charlette took her down by the hair. The Renegades hit a double superkick on JC before finishing off James with a Hart Attack.

Proving Ground Match: ROH Women’s Champion Athena defeated Christina Marie

Marie took the fight to Athena after the Code of Honor, sending her into the buckles and hitting a handspring splash. Marie hit a snapmare for a nearfall before Athena flung her across the ring. Athena laid in the strikes before hitting a baseball slide that sent Marie off the apron to the floor. Athena ragdolled Marie in the ropes before hitting a knockout forearm for the win.

Athena beat up Marie on the floor, flinging her into the barricades and booting her down before standing tall.

The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) defeated Rhett Titus & Tracy Williams

A very good match between these four veterans.

Williams laid in forearms to Bennett, forcing him to tag out to Taven. Bennett then caught Williams with a knee in the back, leading to a strike combination from the Kingdom. Williams avoided a top rope attack from Taven, tagging in Titus. Titus hit a modified airplane spin for a nearfall, but got caught up by a Bennett lariat from the apron. Bennett hit a main event spinebuster, but Titus got his knees up on Taven’s lionsault attempt.

Williams tagged in and ran wild on the Kingdom, hitting the top-rope DDT on Taven before locking on a cloverleaf that Bennett broke up. Titus sent Bennett flying with a belly-to-belly suplex before Titus and Williams hit a series of heavy strikes on Taven for a nearfall. Taven forced Williams into the corner and made a tag to Bennett, who got into a strike exchange with Williams. They locked the other man’s partner in submission holds but kept wailing on each other. They hit tandem piledrivers on their partners before re-engaging, ending with Williams hitting a lariat for a nearfall.

Titus and Taven tagged in, with Titus drilling Taven with a dropkick. Taven held onto the ropes on a belly-to-belly suplex attempt, allowing the Kingdom to take control and hit the Proton Pack for the win.

Backstage, Lexy Nair was with ROH Board Member Stokely Hathaway & ROH TV Champion Samoa Joe. Hathaway announced an eliminator tournament to determine the next challenger for the TV Title. Joe took offense to Lexy’s claims of favoritism shown towards Joe, saying that Hathaway was his own man.

ROH TV Title Eliminator Tournament Match: Christopher Daniels defeated JD Drake

A solid TV match here, and one with some real stakes too. I would’ve preferred Drake moving on as the fresher name, but I’ve got no strong issue with Daniels moving on.

Ian Riccaboni noted that this was the first of four tournament matches. Daniels dropped Drake with a jumping back kick, but Drake dropped him with a barge attack and a bodyslam. Drake laid on Daniels, hitting a Bossman Slam for a nearfall before hitting a pair of sentons. Drake laid into Daniels with chops, but Daniels fired up and engaged in a chop battle before taking Drake down with a flatliner.

Daniels took Drake down with a rabbit lariat hitting a spinning flatliner off the ropes for a nearfall. Daniels went for the Angel’s Wings, but Drake hit a big boot and a cannonball for a nearfall. Drake set Daniels up for a moonsault, but Daniels moved out of the way. Daniels hit the uranage and the Best Moonsault Ever for the win.

Big Bill & Lee Moriarty defeated Adrian Soriano & Gabriel Hodder

Soriano and Hodder are a regular team known as Primal Fear, who have made appearances in the tail-end of the Sinclair-era of ROH. Moriarty snagged Soriano in the Border City Stretch immediately, but Soriano got to the ropes. Hodder and Soriano worked hard to keep Bill out of the ring, but they wasted time posing. That allowed Moriarty to tag in Big Bill, who ran wild. Bill hit a double rotation Bossman Slam and a chokeslam on Soriano to score the win.

ROH TV Title Eliminator Tournament Match: Tony Nese (w/ The Varsity Athletes) defeated Cheeseburger

Nese had the mic on his way to the ring, claiming that cheeseburgers were ruining this country. He wanted to start a group exercise before Cheeseburger’s music hit, bringing out Nese’s opponent. Cheeseburger used his technique to control Nese early, but Nese hung him up on the top rope and hit a gutbuster to take control. He tied Cheeseburger up in the Tree of Woe before hitting crunch kicks to Cheeseburger’s chest.

Cheeseburger fought out of a waistlock and hit a suplex. Cheeseburger hit a superkick before landing the Shotei palm strike – passed down to him by Jushin Thunder Liger himself – for a nearfall. Cheeseburger hit a DDT for a nearfall, then set up a second Shotei. Sterling got on the apron to distract him, allowing Nese to hit a pumphandle Greetings From Asbury Park for the win.

ROH TV Title Eliminator Tournament Match: Gravity defeated Anthony Henry

More of this please! Two newer faces getting time to work and shine, with legitimate question as to who could win. Henry looked great here, as I was biting on a few of his nearfalls.

Gravity tried to do multiple kip-ups to get out of an arm hold, but Henry simply released the arm to have Gravity fall down. Gravity worked his way out of another hold, but Henry booted him down. Gravity sent Henry to the floor, then hit a dive onto him. Henry caught Gravity mid-handstand with a superkick before cranking his neck on the apron.

Henry caught Gravity with a Death Valley Driver for a nearfall before cranking the neck again. Henry laid in a kick to Gravity’s back, but Gravity started to fire up. He caught Henry with a lucha armdrag and a handspring elbow before gorilla-pressing him into a dropkick. Gravity twisted Henry into a Ground Octopus, but Henry reversed it into a Stretch Muffler. Gravity pulled Henry into a roll-up, but Henry caught him with a Penalty Kick and a cross-legged Michinoku Driver for a nearfall.

Henry missed a double stomp but scored with an elevated DDT for a nearfall. Henry hit a pair of kicks, but Gravity caught him with a powerslam before hitting a top rope splash for the win.

ROH TV Title Eliminator Tournament Match: Shane Taylor defeated Serpentico

Serpentico caught Taylor with a few strikes and hit a rana that sent Taylor into the corner. Taylor burst out of the corner with a forearm, then beeled Serpentico across the ring twice. Taylor hit a back splash and a lariat for a nearfall. Serpentico escaped off of Taylor’s shoulders but ran into a body shot. Taylor hit the World’s Strongest Slam for a nearfall.

Serpentico begged off, then flipped Taylor off before firing off a few strikes. Taylor caught Serpentico on a crossbody before cracking him with a headbutt. Taylor then hit the uranage before hitting a splash for the win.

Dalton Castle & The Boys (Brandon & Brent) defeated The Trustbusters (Jeeves Kay, Slim J & Sonny Kiss)

I did not miss hearing the Trustbusters music. Castle and Kiss tried for lariats in the corner for about 30 seconds until Castle just flung Kiss with a suplex. The Trustbusters isolated Brandon after some multi-person shenanigans. Castle tagged back in and flung the Trustbusters around with suplexes before asking for a boy. Castle threw the Boys around before Castle got Kay isolated. Castle hit the Bangarang for the win.
