WWE Evolve notes: Champion vacates title, new general manager named

Wednesday’s WWE Evolve saw two big changes: one that includes a championship change with the other being the naming of their second-ever general manager.

The title change saw Women’s Champion Kendal Gray vacate her championship after defeating Tyra Mae Steele to retain the title. It’s her final match on the brand as she moves to WWE NXT full-time. It continues a trend in recent months as Oba Femi notably vacated his title before being called up to the WWE main roster.

The second Women’s Champion in Evolve, the 24-year-old defeated inaugural titleholder Kali Armstrong in September 2024 and finishes with eight successful title defenses. No plan for how a new champion will be crowned was revealed.

In the other news of the night, Timothy Thatcher has become the first general manager for Evolve, revealed by interim NXT general manager Robert Stone. He replaces inaugural general manager Steve Turner who departed the company last fall.

Thatcher is a former Evolve Champion and works on the indie scene with WWE ID prospects.

Timothy Thatcher booked for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XV

Timothy Thatcher is headed to Bloodsport.

Josh Barnett announced on Sunday that the current WWE ID trainer has been added to Bloodsport XV, which takes place on April 17 as part of this year’s Collective event.

β€œIf it’s Bloodsport, then you know this man will be there to showcase his Catch-as-Catch-can prowess,” he wrote. β€œA day-1 of Josh Barnett’s: Bloodsport, you’ll not find a wrestler more ready for combat. Timothy Thatcher is returning to Josh Barnett’s: Bloodsport 4/17, Wrestlemania Week.”

Thatcher was released by WWE in 2022 but was brought back a few years later as a trainer for WWE ID prospects. He has continued to wrestle on the independent scene wrestling ID talent but has also been seen on Evolve competing against the likes of Charlie Dempsey and Keanu Carver.

Pete Dunne, who is currently on Raw as part of Los Americanos, has already been announced for the WrestleMania weekend event. Other talent announced include Shayna Baszler, Erick Stevens, Fuminori Abe, Masashi Takeda, Miyu Yamashita, Matt Mako, Ray Jaz, Royce Isaacs, Angel Verduzco, and Joe Dashou.

Report: Timothy Thatcher’s potential new WWE role revealed

Following a successful in-ring career, Timothy Thatcher is reportedly set to embrace a brand-new GM role.

According to a recent report by Bodyslam+, WWE is planning to introduce Thatcher in a brand new authority role in Evolve, as their general manager.

Since Stevie Turner departed last year, the GM position in Evolve has remained vacant. No longer wishing to keep it empty, the wrestling promotion has now reportedly planned to insert Thatcher in that position.

Thatcher was an active part of the WWE NXT roster from 2020 to 2022 as an in-ring talent. Before that, the 42-year-old also wrestled for Evolve from 2014 to 2019. After his NXT exit in 2022, Thatcher enjoyed a few brief stints in Pro Wrestling NOAH, AEW/ROH, and MLW before returning to WWE in 2024 as an ID trainer.

Charlie Dempsey to wrestle Timothy Thatcher at indie event

A NXT star is heading to WWN.

The promotion announced on Tuesday that NXT’s Charlie Dempsey will be wrestling Timothy Thatcher at their Battle For The Belts event on December 15 in Clearwater, Florida. It will be Thatcher’s first WWN match in 5 years.

WWN is a governing body of companies best known for having Evolve as one of their brands until the promotion was sold to WWE in 2020. The body currently consists of American Combat Wrestling, Full Impact Pro, Grindhouse, Shine Wrestling, and Viva La Lucha.

WWE has been sending NXT talent to independent events, as well as TNA, in order to get more ring time. NXT talent Myles Borne, Demepsey, and Karmen Petrovic have been announced for the next Bloodsport event that takes place on November 24. Dempsey has wrestled for a variety of promotions during his WWE run, including squaring off against Katsuhiko Nakajima for the AJPW Triple Crown title on January 1 of this year.

Donovan Dijak to make MLW in-ring debut at Fightland

Dijak will make his MLW in-ring debut at Fightland 2024, facing off against Timothy Thatcher. The show is being held at Center Stage in Atlanta on Saturday, September 14 and will stream live on MLW’s YouTube channel for free.

Last week, Dijak arrived in MLW by disrupting a scramble match between Jimmy Lloyd, LSG, Little Guido, and Nolo Kitano. He laid out everyone in the match and then cut a promo saying his aim is to become the next MLW World Heavyweight Champion. The belt is currently held by Satoshi Kojima. Dijak also mentioned Thatcher, Matt Riddle, and Minoru Suzuki as targets.

The 37-year-old Dijak is a free agent after departing WWE this June when his contract was not renewed by the company. On June 27, Dijak posted a statement saying he tried to negotiate with WWE, but they never made him an offer. He was informed at the “eleventh hour” that WWE would not be renewing his contract.

Chris Hero to make in-ring return for West Coast Pro

Chris Hero is returning to the ring.

During Saturday night’s West Coast Pro Wrestling event, Hero made the save after Timothy Thatcher continued to attack JT Thorne after their match. Thatcher initially left the ring, but then attacked Hero from behind. Hero recovered and told Thatcher that if he wanted to take advantage of someone, he’d give him something to take advantage of. He asked Thatcher what he’d be doing November 17, which is the date of West Coast Pro’s Whiplash event. He told Thatcher he wasn’t going to get matchmaker Chris Hero, he was going to get the knockout artist.

Since being released by WWE in 2020, Hero has worked behind the scenes in pro wrestling and hasn’t wrestled. His last match was back in March of 2020, participating in a battle royal in NXT UK. It was reported back in July that Hero had been hired by AEW as a producer.
