Report: WWE was ‘adamant’ about Royce Keys being on main roster

It doesn’t sound like there was ever any chance of Royce Keys being sent to NXT upon joining WWE.

A new Fightful Select report states that WWE was “adamant” on Keys, formerly known as Powerhouse Hobbs in AEW, being positioned on the main roster directly without an NXT run. This decision was one WWE made “very early” in its talks with Keys about signing with the company.

Typically most wrestlers, even those who already have extensive experience, spend some time in NXT before arriving on the main roster. However, there have been some exceptions like Jade Cargill, Penta, Dominik Mysterio, and more who were placed on the main roster instead of going to NXT.

Before arriving in WWE, Keys had a nearly six-year stint with AEW and was a Trios Champion as part of The Opps. He debuted at the Royal Rumble but has not made a televised Raw or SmackDown appearance since, instead competing in dark matches against the likes of Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, Rey Fenix, and Nathan Frazer over the past two months.

Keys also made an appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” podcast following his WWE debut. Whether he’ll be involved in WrestleMania 42 remains to be seen, though BodySlam+ reports that WWE has considered the possibility of him teaming with country music star Jelly Roll at the event.

Jim Ross comments on Royce Keys’ WWE Royal Rumble debut

Jim Ross offered his thoughts on the WWE Royal Rumble during the latest episode of his Grilling JR podcast.

Ross was asked about former Powerhouse Hobbs making his WWE debut as Royce Keys in the match, and responded:

“Well, it was quick. Look, it’s good for his career. You got to move on and stay fresh and put a new coat of paint on it every now and then. And I think that’s basically what he did. He looked great.”

“His ring attire was spiffy. That’s a dated reference,” Ross added.

“He’s a big, strong son of a gun. A lot of character. He’s got integrity. I think the world of him. I wish him nothing but the very best. I gravitated to him early on in his AEW run. And I’m glad that we got a chance to work with him. He’s a hell of a good guy. He’ll be a credit to the locker room without question.”

Keys lasted just under 10 minutes in the match after entering at number 14. He eliminated Damian Priest before being eliminated by Bronson Reed.

Ross was also asked about Chris Jericho not returning to WWE in the match, saying he was surprised it didn’t happen.

“I haven’t talked to Chris in a good while, but I thought it was a lead-pipe cinch that he would be a participant in the match but I was wrong,” Ross said.

When co-host Conrad Thompson suggested that we could learn more regarding Jericho’s future by WrestleMania, Ross responded:

“Maybe that’s what he’s saving it for, is WrestleMania. I don’t know, but whatever it is they’ve been very tight-lipped on it.”

Tony Khan comments on Powerhouse Hobbs, Britt Baker, Steven Borden

Tony Khan commented on several current and former members of the AEW roster during recent interviews to promote Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite in Las Vegas.

Khan appeared on The Yo Josh Martinez Show on Wednesday and was asked about Powerhouse Hobbs, who debuted for WWE in the Royal Rumble on Saturday after a five-and-a-half-year run with AEW.

Khan said:

“I think Powerhouse Hobbs had a great run here in AEW. He started wrestling here in Jacksonville, where I am now, and had some great matches and became a champion in AEW.”

“He’s a former TNT Champion, former World Trios Champion.”

“I’ll always wish him all the best.”

Khan also addressed Steven Borden, the son of Sting, who has been wrestling dark matches at AEW events of late. Asked on the Battleground podcast about Borden using his father’s former ring music for his AEW matches, Khan responded:

“It was my idea. It’s a song that was in a library, and we made a deal to get a certain number of plays. We haven’t used it on air yet, but we have a deal to use ‘Turbocharged,’ which is a track that was available through a music library, and I love licensing great music. That’s one of my favorite songs from my childhood. I think about it all the time, and I thought it would be really cool for Steven to come out to it.”

Borden’s most recent match was a dark bout on the January 21 episode of AEW Dynamite in Orlando. He teamed with QT Marshall in a win over Nathan Cruz and Rosario Grillo.

Khan continued to say of AEW developing Borden:

“Steven and developing him for the future is a huge priority to me and everyone in AEW.”

The AEW president also addressed Britt Baker’s status on Wednesday. Baker has not wrestled for AEW since November 2024.

Khan said of the former AEW Women’s World Champion:

“Britt’s somebody I really like and respect a lot. I definitely think as we’ve evolved, with more tag teams and singles wrestling opportunities across multiple shows, now that we have four hours of TV with Dynamite and Collision, I think there’s going to be more and more opportunities.”

“Britt’s still somebody very highly regarded and respected here in AEW. I would expect to see Britt back in AEW. I just don’t want to say when.”

Tonight’s AEW Dynamite is set for the Pearl Theater at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan’s podcast appearances are available below:

Royce Keys: Never thought I’d be part of something as big as WWE Royal Rumble

Debuting for WWE in the Royal Rumble was a dream come true for the former Powerhouse Hobbs.

Now known as Royce Keys, Hobbs arrived in WWE as a surprise entrant in the men’s Royal Rumble match last Saturday. He signed with WWE after finishing up with AEW last month, ending a nearly six-year run that included TNT and Trios Championship reigns.

WWE uploaded a behind-the-scenes video today documenting Hobbs’ debut. It includes comments from him before the match, along with interactions he had with Cody Rhodes and Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

“This is wild. This is like something out of a movie, man,” Hobbs said while taking a look at the Rumble stage. “This whole setup. Walking down this aisle and into the ring and background. It’s pretty amazing, man. I’m getting goosebumps under this sweatshirt. It’s crazy. It feels real. Looking at the ring, the seats, the stage setup — it’s real. Never thought I would be part of something this big. This is huge. Leading to the Grandaddy of Them All, you know? WrestleMania. This starts tonight.”

Hobbs then caught up with another former AEW wrestler in Cody Rhodes — and Hobbs took a moment to explain how much Rhodes means to him.

“He’s probably going to get mad, but this dude doesn’t know how special he is to me. Thank you for everything. That dude’s been there for me, like, toughest time of my life when my mom passed away. But if I gotta kick his ass, then I gotta kick his ass [laughs]. This is special, man. It’s just like, seeing familiar faces. It’s real. You know, I’m home, I’m moved in. So it’s time to collect.”

WWE included brief footage of the talk Hobbs had with Levesque before the Rumble. Hobbs said Levesque helped ease his nerves by telling him that he was in WWE for a reason.

“We’re going to get rolling and get some good sh*t started,” Levesque told Hobbs. “We’ll be in a good place.”

Hobbs entered the Rumble at number 14 and eliminated Damian Priest during his time in the match. It was Bronson Reed who ended up eliminating Hobbs from the match.

“Eliminating a former World Champion. Ah, I’m here, I’m here, I’m here, I’m here,” Hobbs said after competing. “I’m going to take everything I want. Everything.”

Update on AEW offer to Powerhouse Hobbs before WWE Royal Rumble debut

The offer AEW gave to Powerhouse Hobbs before he signed with WWE was discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio by Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez.

Hobbs debuted for WWE as Royce Keys in the Royal Rumble on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He entered at number 11 and was eliminated after just under 10 minutes by Bronson Reed.

“I just want to clear some things up on the Hobbs thing. I don’t know the WWE offer. I know he got a five year offer from AEW,” Meltzer said on last night’s show.

In Friday’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer wrote that the offer AEW gave to Hobbs would have been higher than what anyone but Chris Jericho made in the company in 2019. However, Meltzer noted that salaries in wrestling have jumped significantly in recent years, and the offer Hobbs was given now wouldn’t put him in the range of the top paid AEW stars.

“The standard of what guys are making in wrestling has just gone way, way, up, because of competition.”

“He got a very good offer. It was not like a top 10 offer in the company (AEW) or anything like but it was a good offer. Again, I don’t really know much more, I don’t know what the WWE offer was.

Meltzer reiterated that WWE has been confident for some time that Hobbs would sign with them when his contract came due.

“I don’t think he was that interested in the AEW offer. I think he had already made up his mind. And I said this all along, in WWE, for a long time their belief was as soon as his contract is up he’s gone.”

AEW talent react to Royce Keys’ WWE debut on social media

The former Powerhouse Hobbs, now going by Royce Keys, made his shocking WWE debut at the 2026 Royal Rumble, which soon attracted reactions from multiple AEW talent.

As a part of the 2026 men’s Royal Rumble match, Keys appeared as the 14th entrant in the match and eliminated Damian Priest, before getting eliminated himself by Bronson Reed and The Vision.

He immediately made an impact upon his surprising WWE debut, to which several of his former AEW colleagues soon reacted on social media. Amada Huber, wife of the late wrestler Brodie Lee, reacted to Keys’ debut on social media, “THAT MY BEST FRIEND LETS GOOOOOOO.”

Darius Martin of AEW’s SkyFlight also reacted to Hobbs appearance, alongside multiple other names such as Wardlow and Kevin Knight. Interestingly, it was Knight who had pinned Hobbs in his last AEW match on January 14th, 2026, to win the AEW World Trios Championship.

Hobbs was a part of the AEW roster from 2020, where he stayed till 2026, successfully winning multiple titles, including the TNT Championship in 2023 and the AEW World Trios Championship.

WWE was long interested in signing Hobbs, and the 35-year-old finally joined the Stamford-based promotion after having negotiations with AEW.

Powerhouse Hobbs/Royce Keys debuts at WWE Royal Rumble

Weeks after departing AEW and signing with WWE, the former Powerhouse Hobbs made his debut at Saturday’s Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia.

The newly-named Royce Keys appeared during the men’s Rumble match at number 14, immediately squaring off with Damian Priest and eliminating him. He also tangled with former AEW roster mate Cody Rhodes which was alluded to on commentary. He was eventually eliminated by members of The Vision.

When Hobbs/Keys came out, his entrance video flashed the name ‘Powerhouse Hobbs’ before transitioning to his new name to signal the transition. It was later reported that Royce is the name of his youngest son while Keys was the maiden name of his late mother.

After five years, Hobbs/Keys finished up with AEW in mid-January, dropping the Trios titles on the January 17 AEW Collision episode that was taped the night news broke that his deal was expiring and he was expected to be heading to WWE.

Our Dave Meltzer reported that AEW made a push to re-sign the 35-year-old Hobbs to a substantial new contract, but Hobbs/Keys wanted to go to WWE instead — a place that had wanted him for quite some time according to reports.

The career of Hobbs/Keys began in 2009 on the California indie scene with his big break coming in the summer of July 2020 during the pandemic era of AEW at Daily’s Place.

New signee’s travel schedule leads to WWE Royal Rumble speculation

The men’s and women’s WWE Royal Rumble matches always feature surprise entrants with names like Chris Jericho being speculated on quite a bit over the last few months.

However, it’s Jericho’s former AEW rostermate Powerhouse Hobbs that is drawing attention for when he could make his WWE in-ring debut with one report leaning toward him potentially being in Saudi Arabia this weekend.

On Friday, Fightful Select reported that Hobbs, who will go by the name Royce Keys in his new promotional home, was scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia this week. However, they stated he did not travel over with the group that flew over after Monday’s Raw and there has yet to be reports of him in the country.

Hobbs/Keys was not on Friday’s SmackDown from Saudi Arabia.

The 35-year-old signed with WWE after five years in AEW where he was a former AEW Trios Champion and former TNT Champion. In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter and subsequent daily update, Dave Meltzer reported that AEW made “a very good offer” to keep Hobbs but wasn’t sure how much it was considered “as WWE believed he was coming for some time either way.”

Friday Update

Powerhouse Hobbs

— I don’t have much new regarding Simone Johnson (Ava) leaving WWE. She announced that her contract has expired and wasn’t going to sign a new deal earlier today. I guess there is no angle to write her off but it’ll be explained on Tuesday.

— Want to thank everyone for the nice comments about the show on Wednesday and the article on Kim Wood in today’s Observer. We talked a lot more about Wood on today’s show with Alex Marvez, who knew him well from his days covering the Cincinnati Bengals and they remained very close friends.

— AEW Dynamite did 653,000 viewers and an 0.09 in 18-49. It is the most viewers the show has done since Big Data came into being. This number doesn’t include MAX. For live and same day viewing, if you include MAX, it would beat the Raw number of the prior week and could be close to the Smackdown number as well. It’s only a one-week thing and the gains were mostly teenagers (best teenage number for a pro wrestling TV show in recent weeks) and 50+. These numbers aren’t exact but it did about 43,000 in 18-34, 81,000 in 35-49 and 107,000 in 50-54 which obviously makes no sense at all. I wouldn’t react too much to a one-week rating number, but since the focus was on multiple challengers for the world title (Swerve, Andrade, Kenny Omega, Adam Page and Brody King) that would seem to be the reason, but it’s better to wait for a pattern.

— Regarding Powerhouse Hobbs/Royce Keys and the note in the current issue. While AEW did make a big offer for him to come in, a number that just a few years ago would be very high for a pro wrestler, it wasn’t through the roof high and was not at the level of the top ten plus stars in AEW, but it was a very good five-year offer. We don’t know the WWE offer. To clarify, it was not at the level of the biggest stars in the company right now. I don’t know how much he even considered as WWE believed he was coming for some time either way. I think some had the impression he was offered top-of-the-line money and while it would have been pre-wrestling competition a great number, the salary scale throughout the industry has risen because of competition.

— Voices of Wrestling released their poll for the ten best matches of 2025:

  1. Kenny Omega vs. Gabe Kidd 1/5
  2. MJF vs. Mistico 9/19
  3. Adam Page vs. Will Ospreay 5/25
  4. Adam Page vs. Jon Moxley 7/12
  5. Toni Storm vs. Mariah May 3/9

  7. Saya Kamitani vs. Tam Nakano 4/27
  8. Bandido vs. Konosuke Takeshita 7/11
  9. El Desperado vs. Jun Kasai 6/24
  10. Sareee vs. Syuri 3/10

— Henry Miller, the former sumo and MMA fighter Sentoryu who was popular during the Pride heyday, passed away last night at the age of 56. He had lung issues.

  • — CMLL at Arena Mexico. At this writing the show is not sold out. They raised ticket prices for this one. It’s on Triller starting at 9:30 p.m. Eastern as well as on the CMLL YouTube subscription page.

  • Mistico & Mascara Dorada & Neon vs. Difunto & Ultimo Guerrero & Volador Jr. in a non-title match
  • This is the first show with The Sky team all together in seven weeks as it’s Neon’s first match back from a broken shoulder.

— For tomorrow night at Arena  Coliseo in Mexico City, the main event is a non-title four-way with Castagnoli vs. Angel de Oro  vs. Cavernario vs. Euforia plus Johnny TV & Madden & Mansoor vs Barboza & Difunto & Furia Roja

— Sunday at  Arena Mexico has Madden & Mansoor & TV in the main event against Atlantis Jr. & Gordon & Neon and Xelhua vs.  Euforia.  Puebla on Monday looks to be the strongest sellout chance with Mistico & Dorada & Templario vs. Cavernario & Soberano Jr. & Volador Jr. plus Atlantis Jr. vs. Ultimo Guerrero

AEW made a ‘much higher than expected’ offer to keep Powerhouse Hobbs

Powerhouse Hobbs received a big offer from AEW to remain in the company.

Dave Meltzer addressed Hobbs leaving AEW and signing with WWE in Friday’s edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, available now for subscribers. Meltzer wrote that AEW’s offer to Hobbs was much higher than expected and later compared it to deals signed by top stars in recent years.

Meltzer wrote:

“He got a great AEW offer to stay but I don’t know his WWE offer. The AEW offer was much higher than I would have expected. It would have been a number that I believe would have been higher than anyone but Chris Jericho earned in AEW’s first year in 2019.”

Meltzer continued to compare the offer Hobbs received to what Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and others have made in recent years.

“It would be in line with what Bryan Danielson got to jump from WWE to AEW, maybe slightly less but in line. It would be more than guys the level Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were making four years ago (less than they are making now) and in the range of what a guy the level of Rollins were making around the same time and nearly triple of what many significantly high WWE stars were making in the first year or so of AEW after the first round of increases had taken place.”

“If WWE did offer him similar money, in theory it would guarantee a decent push,” Meltzer continued, although he noted that WWE will ultimately push the wrestlers who get over.

Hobbs will be using the name Royce Keys in WWE. He has a son named Royce as well. WWE filed to trademark the name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Hobbs turned 35 last Friday. He had been with AEW since 2020 and is a former TNT Champion and World Trios Champion in the promotion.

Jim Ross believes two former AEW wrestlers will be in the WWE Royal Rumble

Jim Ross believes that both Chris Jericho and Powerhouse Hobbs will be in the men’s Royal Rumble match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

On the most recent edition of his Grilling JR podcast, Ross spent time talking with co-host Conrad Thompson about who he expects to be in the Rumble matches. He said Jericho is too smart not to get himself booked on the show.

“Hell yeah. Absolutely. He’s too smart not to get himself booked on this show for his return,” JR said when asked if he thinks Jericho will be in the Rumble. “He’ll get a big pop.”

“I’m especially excited about ‘Big Willy,'” JR continued, referring to Powerhouse Hobbs.

“I don’t know if it’s a secret or not. He’ll be in the Royal Rumble, I think. Why in the hell would you sign a guy this close to a major event and then not utilize him? And that’ll be a new face. And he looks great.

Ross also revealed that Hobbs recently called him to thank him for advice he’s given over the years.

“He called me a day or two ago, thanking me for my help over the years. I said, ‘Well, my phone number isn’t going to change, big fella.’”

Ross and Thompson later stated that they do not have any inside knowledge about whether either Jericho or Hobbs will be in the Rumble.

The full episode of Grilling JR is available below. JR’s comments about Hobbs and Jericho begin around the 13-minute mark.

  • UFC 324
  • Powerhouse Hobbs’ WWE name

Powerhouse Hobbs’ WWE name revealed

According to a new report, Will “Powerhouse” Hobbs will have a new name in WWE.

BodySlam is reporting that Hobbs will be known as Royce Keys when he makes his WWE debut. In most cases, WWE talent pick their own names.

WWE filed to trademark “Royce Keys” for wrestling purposes on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

Real name William Hobson, he has also wrestled previously under the names Will Rood, Will Hobbs, and Powerhouse Hobbs.

Dave Meltzer confirmed in today’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Hobbs has signed with WWE. Speaking about Hobbs’ decision to sign with the company, Meltzer wrote:

“With his age, this was the time to make the move and generally, but not always, making the move either way gives you a fresh coat of paint and a jump start because the new company always wants to prove it can make you a bigger star than the old company did.”

Hobbs, who turned 35 on Friday, debuted with AEW in 2020 and is a former TNT Champion and World Trios Champion alongside Samoa Joe and Katsuyori Shibata.

Update on Powerhouse Hobbs signing with WWE, reaction from AEW

Though Powerhouse Hobbs has departed the company, it sounds like he’s still on good terms with AEW.

Dave Meltzer confirmed in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Hobbs has officially signed with WWE. He finished up with AEW last week, dropping the Trios titles on the Collision episode that aired on January 17. Meltzer reports that Hobbs’ decision was about doing what was best for his family — and no one in AEW has had anything negative to say about him.

“Nobody in AEW had anything negative to say about him, with us being told he made the decision based on his family, which would seem to indicate he got a better money deal,” Meltzer wrote. “Some people go to WWE with the idea of going even with a lesser money offer, because it’s either their dream, or belief they want to be in the top place, or that it’s a better stepping stone to Hollywood than AEW. But Hobbs was a guy the company clearly really wanted and whether he was going to get much higher in AEW is a question.”

Hobbs was a TNT Champion and Trios Champion during his time with AEW, which was a five-plus-year run. He held the Trios titles with Samoa Joe & Katsuyori Shibata before dropping them to Hangman Page, Kevin Knight & Mike Bailey last week.

Today is Hobbs’ 35th birthday. When he’ll make his WWE debut remains to be seen, though there is sure to be a lot of speculation heading into the Royal Rumble at the end of this month.
