Friday Update

WWE on ESPN

Garrett Gonzales and I have a new show up today. We talked a ton of  subjects, the wars for content, why TV has always overpaid for the NFL and why WWE and UFC having their rights come due now was perfect timing with the Skydance/Paramount merger and launch of the new ESPN app, we talk about more things ESPN is after from pro wrestling and MMA, WWE losing television for Saturday Night Main Event, AEW prospects for a new deal, Mercedes Mone, Mascara Dorada, new WWE women recruits, WWE or AEW running Sphere in Las Vegas, Forbidden Door and more.

Forbidden Door is well over 17,000 tickets out and just about sold out.  As of this morning the gate had topped $2.7 million, making it the fourth biggest gate and fifth biggest attendance in AEW history.  It’s also the third biggest attendance figure for a non-WWE show ever in the U.K., and third biggest gate for a non-WWE show in Europe.  I don’t think the gate can pass $2.8 million because there just aren’t enough seats left.

Regarding the note in the Observer this week on different ideas regarding Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin vs. FTR and the idea of doing an injury and that leading to a tag title change, while that definitely was suggested, it was never going to happen. Tony Khan did not like the idea and there was never a chance of it happening.

Blake Avignon of The MMA Draw has reported that ESPN is in active talks to acquire UFC Fight Pass and to put the full UFC archives as well as some live content in the new ESPN streaming service.  It was said discussions are advanced but not finalized and they were also looking at the WWE Vault and archives.  We talked about this in depth on today’s show.

–We’re looking for reports on these shows:
*RevPro this afternoon at the Crystal Palace in London
*WWE today from Dublin (matches not on Smackdown)
*RevPro tomorrow at the Crystal Palace in London
*WWE tomorrow in Liverpool, England
*WWE Sunday in Newcastle England
We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

-This weekend we’ll be doing polls on AEW Forbidden Door and NXT Heatwave, thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match form each show to [email protected]

–The UFC show this weekend is from Shanghai, China,  It starts tonight at 3 a.m. Eastern on ESPN+ or midnight Pacific Time
Xiao Long (136) vs. SuYoung  You (135.5)
Yizha (145) vs. Westin Wilson (146)
Michel Pereria (186) vs. Kyle Daukaus (185)
Rongzhu (155.5) vs. Austin Hubbard (155.5)
Lone’er Kavanagh (126) vs. Charles Johnson (126)
Maheshate (155) vs. Gauge Young (155.5)
Taiyliake Nueraji (170) vs. Kiefer Crosbie (170.5)
Sumudaerji (125.5) vs. Kevin Borjas (126)
Sergei Pavlovich (255.5) vs. Waldo Cortes-Ascota (262)
Brian Ortega (153) vs. Aljamain Sterling (153
Johnny Walker (206) vs. Zhang Mingyang (205)

This may be the week that Arena Mexico doesn’t top 15,000 fans as it’s a normal main event with Mistico & Neon & Titan vs. Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero & Stuka Jr., Templario & TJP vs. El Hijo de Villano III & Villano III Jr. for the  New Japan Strong tag titles, Esfinge vs. Donovan Dijak in a lightning match and Hombre Bala Jr. & Max Star & Futuro vs. Taiji Ishimori & Okumura & Yutani.    Tomorrow night at Arena Coliseo in Mexico City has Templario & TJP & Titan vs. Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja & Volador Jr., Euforia vs. Dijak and Esfinge & El Hijo del Pantera & Star Jr. vs. Okumura & Ishimori & Yutani..  Sunday at Arena Mexico has Volador Jr. & Zandokan Jr. vs. TJP & Dijak, Titan & Xelhua vs. Ishimori & Yutani.  TJP faces Volador Jr. in a singles match in Puebla on Monday.

On 8/29 at Arena Mexico, they have the World Grand Prix tournament that will sell out with Mistico, Mascara Dorada, Neon, Templario, Titan, Volador Jr., Zandokan Jr., Angel de Oro, Atlantis Jr., Difunto, Action Andretti, Dijak, Lio Rush, Michael Oku, Mike Bailey, Robbie X, Rocky Romero, Ishimori,TJP and Mortos.  A unique semi has Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero vs. Averno & Felino.  Guerrero & Bucanero were the best tag team in the world 20-25 years ago.  It’s been years since they last teamed up at Arena Mexico.

Tickets for Worlds Collide on 9/12 in Las Vegas are priced from  $103 to $656.  The idea is a lot of rich people are coming in that weekend for Alvarez vs. Crawford so they can charge high prices.

The Netflix series “Wrestlers,” a reality show that covered OVW, was renewed for a second season.

The HBO Max Series “Mysteries of the Abandoned:  Hidden America” is doing a feature on the Mid South Coliseum  in wrestling as a wrestling venue interviewing King Cobra.  They also talk about Sputnik Monroe forcing integration in the late 50s at wrestling shows.  That story, while very significant, is often told  very differently from how it happened.  But Monroe was a key in the starting of allowing blacks and whites to sit together at sports and entertainment events in Memphis when previously they each had separate sections of arenas or theaters they were allowed to sit in.  However, this wasn’t at the Mid South Coliseum, which began the regular arena for wrestling in 1971.  It was at the Ellis Auditorium, where Jimmy Hart as a teenager used to sell cokes in the 50s during the Monroe heyday.

Jeff Jarrett will wrestle for the first time in Hendersonville, TN (he’s wrestled hundreds of times in Nashville) where he grew up, on a show called “Jeff Jarrett’s All-Star Superslam on 10/23 at Veterans Park.  Jarrett & Jay Lethal & Satnam Singh face QT Marshall &  Brady Booker & Elijah Drago in the main event.

WWE has moved Karrion Kross T-shirts to clearance sale prices.   Kross was announced for the 10/10 House of Glory show in Amazura, Queens, NY.

After failing to make weight last weekend for his right with Nursuton Ruziboev by four pounds, the second time in a row he missed making weight Bryan Battle was released by UFC.  He had been 7-1 in the promotion.

What is listed as the longest singles match in WWWF history, Bruno Sammartino vs. Waldo Von Erich, took place 61 years ago today in Madison Square Garden.  The two wrestled to what was billed as an 81:00 draw,  Most likely the time was considerably shorter, as they  usually added 10-20 minutes to the announced time of long matches in that day, but it was still a long match.

After having his right leg amputated from above the knee, Buff Bagwell returns to Memphis Wrestling for tomorrow’sTV show.  He won’t be in a match but will be in the corner for a tag team title match with the Hollywood Clique defending against The Big Manes.  Bagwell is there to keep The Clique manager Jimmy Blaylock from interfering.

Netflix announced Jon Anik, Max Kellerman and Andre Ward as the announcers for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terrence Crawford fight on 9/13.  Michael Buffer will announce the main event and Joe Martinez will announce the other matches.  Mario Lopez, Antonio Tarver, Mark Kriegel, Mike Coppinger, Jim Gray, Heidi Androl and Skipper Kelp will also be part of the broadcast team.

Thursday Update

WWE

  • Gabe Spitzer, Netflix’s VP of Sports, told The Wrap that Netflix is “thrilled” with how WWE has performed on the platform:
    • We’re thrilled with the performance of WWE programming as a whole. From the start in January to now, it’s just been everything we could hope for and more, and a really great partnership.
  • Spitzer noted that viewers who watch Raw are watching a wide variety of other Netflix programming:
    • It’s bringing in kids, men, women, everyone. So it’s not like they’re just watching WWE and turning and watching standup comedy. It’s everything from a ‘Bridgerton’ to ‘Squid Game’ to standup. It’s pretty family-friendly overall.
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Roxanne Perez named the wrestlers she’s used as inspiration for her heel persona:
    • Eddie Guerrero is probably my top one that I always watch, and just his mannerisms and the way he wrestled, and even in his entrance. It’s like he’s not doing much, but he is with his face. And so him for sure. CM Punk, he was one of my favorite heels growing up. AJ Lee, Alexa Bliss’ Goddess era, so many but I think those are like my top inspos.
  • Kevin Owens reacted to Naomi’s pregnancy announcement:
    • I have high hopes that with Naomi and Gigantic Jim (the nicest Bloodline member despite being so misguided) as his parents, the child will turn out to be a decent human being UNLIKE HIS UNCLES AND THE CHILDREN OF HIS VARIOUS FAMILY MEMBERS’ FORMER TAG TEAM PARTNERS!!!
  • Ron Killings celebrated his “The White Album” reaching the number 10 spot on Billboard’s country charts.
  • Bubba Ray Dudley was the guest on a new edition of Six Feet Under with The Undertaker & Michelle McCool.
  • On her YouTube channel, Asuka posted a promo discussing her history with IYO SKY.
  • Bronson Reed was a guest on The Fan Morning Show in Indianapolis.
  • Good Karma Wrestling interviewed Maxxine Dupri.
  • Logan Paul and his wife Nina Agdal discussed their wedding on a new episode of Impaulsive.

Other Wrestling

  • Ahead of the WWE-ESPN PLE deal beginning next month, ESPN has removed the AEW-dedicated news section from its website.
  • In her interview with TV Insider, Mercedes Mone praised Tony Khan as the best boss she’s ever worked for:
    • Tony Khan is the best boss I’ve had in my whole life. I love working with him. I love working for him. It has been so positive just to be around him. He brings such an energy that I’ve never experienced from a boss before. I don’t know, he makes you so happy even before you go out to the ring. He is just so energetic and passionate about wrestling. I love wrestling, and he does. So, it’s the best working with someone who loves it just as much as you do.
  • Dustin Rhodes agreed that Khan is the best boss he’s ever had, saying it “isn’t even close.”
  • TV Insider asked Mone about her relationship with boyfriend The Beast Mortos:
    • First of all, that mask he has is really, really hot. Two, he is a lawyer so I can sue you at any time I want. Three, it’s awesome to have someone that understands what you do. Wrestling is extremely, extremely hard, and nobody gets it but wrestlers. Just to have someone who loves it and understands it as much as I do, it’s the best feeling to have a partner like that.
  • Mone named British wrestler Kanji as an under-the-radar talent who people should be watching:
    • Yes! From Rev Pro, I’m obsessed and love Kanji. I think she is so talented and brings something to the ring I haven’t really seen women do. She definitely reminds me of a female Zack Sabre Jr. in that she is so technical. She has such a drive and passion for this. If I could choose someone to sign here [in AEW], she would be my number one pick.
  • Evil Uno will debut for DDT Pro Wrestling at the promotion’s show in Tokyo on September 28.
  • Brian Cage was interviewed by the Hitting the Turnbuckle podcast.
  • Full video of Slammiversary 2025 – along with TNA’s Fade to Black documentary on the event – has been uploaded to TNA’s YouTube channel for free.
  • Responding to comments Dana White made about wanting indie wrestlers in Power Slap, Joey Janela said he turned down an offer from the organization:
    • Nothing against anyone doing the powerslap deal props to you but they hit me up and asked me if I wanted to do it, & I said f*ck no.
    • Was the money good yes, was the money good enough to give someone a free shot at jaw, The Embarrassment & CTE deluxe? F*ck no, I’ll take the $50 to launch myself off a ladder through the thumbtack table any day of the week..
  • While teasing a new tequila partnership that he’s going to be involved with, Adam Scherr (Braun Strowman) gave an update on his wrestling status and what’s next for him:
    • It’s been an absolute amazing ride – not saying that I’m not going to get back in the ring and whip somebody’s ass, because we all know I can. But it’s an opportunity for me to try some new stuff, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to rekindling relationships with family and friends that I’ve missed out on and things that, you know, you just don’t get to do while you’re on the road because it’s so busy.
  • The Lapsed Fan podcast began a new series examining the life of Hulk Hogan.

WWE

  • WWE uploaded the full Trick Williams vs. Je’Von Evans number one contender’s main event from NXT last night.
  • A face-to-face confrontation between Oba Femi and Evans took place after Evans was confirmed as his NXT Championship challenger for Heatwave.
  • TNA star Joe Hendry defeated Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo in a dark match prior to NXT.
  • Roman Reigns posted a video sharing his reaction to the news that Naomi and Jimmy Uso are expecting a child:
    • Welp, time to start over. Looks like he’s got the youngest now. I don’t got the babies. We’re in school, we’re good, we’re starting to empty our house out. He’s got to start back over.
    • That’s awesome, though. Congrats, I love both of y’all. It’s a blessing. To have our family continue to grow – nothing like it. This is completely god-sent. Congrats, guys. Love y’all.
  • Trish Stratus shared the tragic news that her mother passed away last week following a battle with cancer:
    • My heart feels broken in a way I can’t describe. Life will never feel the same. I can’t imagine my world without her… not being able to pick up the phone to hear her voice, her advice, her laugh. People have told me time will heal but right now it just feels like a piece of me will be missing forever and I will never feel whole again.
    • My only solace is that I will carry her in everything I do and mama, I promise your grandkids will never forget the incredible woman their Nana was.
    • Thank you for loving me so fiercely, for shaping me into who I am, and for showing me what it means to be resilient. You are my literal fighting spirit and dammit, I’m gonna miss you so much!
  • Mickie James looked back at some of her greatest moments for a WWE Retrospective video.
  • Natalya thanked the Cauliflower Alley Club for honoring her with their Lou Thesz Award, which is given to individuals who exemplify technical brilliance, leadership, and multi-faceted contributions to the industry:
    • To be the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Lou Thesz award means so much to me as Lou Thesz is held as a standard bearer in wrestling.
    • Like everything worth spending a life chasing, the wrestling business has never been easy. It’s not easy today. It never gets easy, and if it ever does, I’ll know that’s when it’s time to hang them up.
    • Thank you so much @caulifloweralleyclub for thinking of me.
  • While speaking with Ten Count Media, Sol Ruca named IYO SKY as her dream opponent.
  • John Cena took part in an Autocomplete Interview for WIRED.

  • Ricky Steamboat’s son Richie shared a photo of his father’s paystub from WrestleMania III.
  • UFC fighter Michael Chandler was the guest on a new edition of Celtic Warrior Workouts with Sheamus.

Other Wrestling

  • Samoa Joe told The Sportster that playing Sweet Tooth on Peacock’s Twisted Metal series has helped make him better at using his body language in pro wrestling:
    • I mean, a tremendous amount, I think. Being forced, especially with the Sweet Tooth mask, which is very, very not inclined to show a lot of emotion just by its nature. Yeah, just in the practice of being that character, your body language and how you express yourself can’t help it improve. And yeah, I’ve definitely noticed myself being a little bit more emotive in the ring whenever I do things.
  • The Wrestling Classic has an interview with Kip Sabian.
  • Leon Slater vs. Francesco Akira has been announced for RevPro’s Global Wars UK show in London this Friday.

Monday Update

–Bryan and I will be back tonight talking about Raw, weekend news, as well as items in this report and taking questions.

–Raw taping starting with the 9/15 show in Springfield, MA, are listing a 6:30 p.m. local start time.  They advertise 30 minutes before Raw starts because they want the crowds in the seats.  Either they are doing a new one hour show taped prior to Raw or Raw will move to a 7 p.m. start time as a way to get a one hour jump on the NFL, likely the latter.

–Raw tonight has Becky Lynch vs. Natalya for the IC title,Penta vs.Xaiver Woods, Bron Brakker vs.Jey Uso, Iyo Sky vs. Raquel Rodriguez plus Naomi and Seth Rollins.  Naomi will address her medical issue and one would think the world women’s title situation will also be answered tonight.  The show is from Philadelphia and at last check there were 12,265 tickets so a big house.  It will be interesting if there are Karrion Kross chants because Philadelphia is the city you’d expect them  in.

–The 9/20 Indianapolis PLE will be called Wrestlepalooza, which was the name ECW first used and First Wrestling in Minneapolis has used.  The last we heard yesterday is that it was strongly expected to be on ESPN, but not 100 percent, but an announcement should be made very soon.  This would be WWE’s first live show on ESPN, months before the new deal kicks in in April.  They must have left some loophole in the contract with Peacock since Peacock was supposed to get all of them through March 2026.  This goes head-to-head with an AEW PPV show.

–Smackdown was the top rated show on television on Friday night with 1.43 million viewers and an 0.35 in 18-49.  Those numbers were down, particularly 18-49, from recent weeks.  They went head-to-head with an NFL preseason game with Tennessee vs. Atlanta on the NFL Network which did 1.22 million viewers and 0.29.  That was the No. 2 show on TV for the night.

–Sunday’s AEW PPV show which starts the main show at 1 p.m. Eastern and Zero Hour starts likely 11:30 a.m.(8:30 a.m. Eastern).  The show has about 17,000 tickets out, so it’ll be the company’s second largest attendance number and second largest gate number of the year.

–Regarding the Friday note, the MJF vs. Mistico match from Mexico City was not the top 18-49 segment of the year.  However, Adam Page and MJF very clearly are the highest drawing AEW wrestlers with women.  It was also noted to us that there were seats in 101 and 102 for Forbidden Door at 53 pounds right now, and others in the section paid four to six times that price for the same area.
(thanks  to Trish Speirs)

–El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Dominik Mysterio for the Mega title will headline the Worlds Collide AAA show on 9/12 in Las Vegas at the Cow Pavilion.  TKO is doing the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terrence Crawford fight at Allegiant Stadium that they expect will draw a ton of Mexican travelers so they decided to run AAA the night before.  I actually would expect a title change here.  It’ll be interesting because Dominik was the biggest babyface and Vikingo was the biggest heel on the Saturday show, even though their actual roles were the opposite.  But that crowd loved all the AAA stars and hated Vikingo because he’s seen as the anti-Alberto El Patron, and Alberto is AAA’s most popular wrestler.  Alberto vs. VIkingo matches made Vikingo seem so inferior to Alberto fthe way they were worked, and the crowds turned on Vikingo because of that.

–Tickets to that show go on sale Friday to the public and there will be a presale on Thursday.

–We’re looking for your thoughts on these shows from the weekend:
*G-1 on Saturday (semifinals) and Sunday  (finals) from the Ariake ARena
*AAA TripleMania on Saturday
*CMLL from Arena Mexico on Friday
We’re looking for a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match from each show to [email protected]

–NXT tomorrow is from the Philadelphia Met with Trick Williams vs. Je’Von Evans with the winner facing Oba Fami for the title on Saturday night at Heatwave, Ethan Page & Chelsea Green vs. Tavion Heights & Tyra May Steel, Jordynne Grace and Black Monroe have a face-off before Saturday’s show, Josh Briggs vs. Yoshiki Inamura in a street fight, Fatal Influence vs. The Elegance Brand with Masha Slamovich as referee and Ricky Saints vs. Jasper Troy.

–The new ESPN streaming service that will be the home of WWE PLE shows starting in April will launch on Thursday.

–For the weekend and Google searches, the UFC show on Saturday with Khamzat Chimaev winning the middleweight title from Dricus Du Plessis is at 1,030,000 and AAA TripleMania  was at 20,000.

–The infamous Shockmaster segment on the WCW Clash of Champions took place on this day in 1993.  Tom Lawlor once recreated it for a UFC weigh-in entrance.

–The Cauliflower Alley Club  is having its 2025 ceremony this week in Las Vegas.  Wish I could go.  Mick Foley as the Mike Mazurki award winner and Nattie Neidhart as the Lou Thesz Award winner are the two biggest awards.

–The Hardys will be doing media in Minneapolis this week to  promote TNA TV tapings in that  city.

–Individual tickets for Crown Jewel   Perth go on sale Friday with a presale Thursday.  They have Smackdown on 10/10, Crown Jewel on 10/11 and Raw on 10/13.  The RAC Arena will  hold about 11,000 for a WWE set up so I expect the tickets to go fast.

–The Volador Jr. vs. Titan first round match in the MLW Opera Cut tournament was announced for the 9/13 show in North Richland Hills, TX.

–Ronda Rousey will be at the New York Comic Con on 10/10 in North Room 406 at 5 p.m. to promote her new graphic novel on her life.

–Paul Walter Hauser defends the Progress Proteus title in a four-way with Simon Miller, Chrles Corwley and Bullit on 8/25 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London.

–Isla Dawn, using that name, was announced for the AIW show on 9/20 at The Roxy in Lakewood, OH.  It’s part of the annual JT Lightning Invitational tournament that takes place with shows at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. that day.

Friday Update

–Garrett Gonzales and I just did our show today covering all the news from the past week, from the UFC deal, long-term of AEW,  the big weekend coming up with the shows in Mexico, UFC, G-1, TNA and its future, Lorenzo Fertitta, and more.  Our weekend show will be tomorrow night covering G-1, UFC, TripleMania  and more.

–Tonight’s Arena Mexico show headlined by MJF vs. Zandokan Jr. for the CMLL light heavyweight title sold out five hours before it started.  Tomorrow night’s TripleMania show a few miles away is also sold out, and tomorrow’s Arena Coliseo show had only a few tickets left as of yesterday so it probably sold out by this point.  Also on tonight’s show is Mistico & Hologram vs. Difunto & Mortos, Templario & Titan vs. Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja and a Cibernteico with Ultimo Guerrero, Averno,Barbaro Cavernario, Dragon Rojo Jr., Esfinge, Valiente, Rey Bucnaero and Felino.

–This is the hottest period for Arena Mexico wrestling in its 69 year history.  It has now broken the records set in 1991.

–More than 40,000 fans will pay to see the three shows in Mexico City tonight and tomorrow.  Mistico & Hologram & Templario vs. Ultimo Guerrero & Mortos & Volador Jr. headline tomorrow at Arena Coliseo head to head with TripleMania.

–TripleMania has El Hijo del Vikingo vs Dominik Mysterio vs. El Grande Americano vs. Dragon  Lee, Finn Balor & JD McDonagh & Raquel Rodriguez vs. Mr. Iguana & Nino Hamburguesa & Lola Vice, Angel &  Berto defend the AAA tag titles against Pagano & Psycho Clown in a street fight and Lady Flammer defends the Reina de Reinas title against Natalya and Faby Apache.  TripleMania  airs on YouTube at 9 p.m. Eastern

–We are doing weekend polls for these shows
*Arena Mexico tonight
*G-1 tomorrow morning
*TripleMania tomorrow night
*G-1 on final on Sunday
We’re looking for a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match for each show to [email protected]

–Smackdown  tonight in Boston had Street Profits vs. DIY,  Piper Niven vs. Alexa Bliss, Miz & Carmelo Hayes vs. Nathan Frazer & Axiom along with Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre.  They had 12,000+ out as of this morning and was expected to sell out.

–A correction from the current issue of the Observer in the story on Robbie Ellis.  The wrestler Ron Ellis who did TV in World Class, Mid South and the Carolinas in the 80s was not Robbie Ellis.  Ellis never actually worked for a major promotion.

–Perry Saturn underwent hip replacement surgery this past week.

–Paul Levesque and Stephanie McMahon took a vacation to Greece this week.  TMZ shot photos of them.

–We have most of the notes on Wednesday’s AEW ratings in the issue but because of G-1 we didn’t have all the details we usually do.  So a few notes:
The show did the second biggest women 18-34 and 18-49 numbers of the year, behind only Grand Slam Mexico.  The first quarter was the largest number of viewers for a quarter on Dynamite since  September 11, 2024.  Keep in mind that September numbers weren’t with the show also on MAX, so the actual number probably beat that by a few hundred thousand.  In 18-49, the first quarter, which  was the Adam Page and MJF segment, did the second biggest 18-49 number for Dynamite so far this year, trailing only the MJF vs. Mistico segment from Mexico City.
The high point for viewers, 18-49 and all women demos were the MJF & Page segment.  The high point for men was Darby Allin, Will Ospreay and Death Riders stuff along with the ring entrances for the Mercedes Mone women’s trios match.  The high point for 18-34 was the Adam Copeland, Stokely Hathaway, FTR, Christian Cage, Nick Wayne & Kip Sabian segment.

–Apollo Crews is back in the ring in Orlando training for a return to action.  He’s been out seven months since surgery to repair a torn pec.

–Leila Grey of AEW is performing on Tuesday night in New York at the  Bowery Electric.  She has also released a record album called “This Is Leila.”

–UFC 319 is tomorrow from the United Center in Chicago

Thursday Update

WWE

  • After reporting in July that WWE has discussed Omos having a run in Lucha Libre AAA, WrestleVotes notes that Omos could potentially make his AAA debut this Saturday at Triplemania.
  • WWE Shop has a Microman shirt on sale ahead of Triplemania, indicating that he is likely returning to AAA.
  • TMZ’s Hulk Hogan documentary averaged 1.004 million viewers on Fox on Tuesday night. In the 18-49 demo, the broadcast drew a 0.13 rating, which ranked ninth among all TV programming in prime time. WWE NXT was tied for second with a 0.17 rating.
  • Brooke Hogan was spotted getting emotional on a walk in Orlando, Florida earlier this week, with TMZ writing that they were told “Brooke got emotional seeing the sunset … it reminded her of her father, and she was telling her husband how much Hulk would have loved it.”
  • AdWeek notes that DoorDash is set to become a presenting sponsor of WWE Raw on Netflix:
    • Regarding its offerings, the streamer’s ads leader said clients were looking forward to live programming, including WWE Raw, with Netflix partnering with DoorDash as the presenting sponsor for the new season.
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Sheamus named some of the dream guests he’d like to have on his Celtic Warrior Workouts YouTube show:
    • Roman [Reigns], obviously, would be a huge one. Rock obviously, Stone Cold. I tried to get Stone Cold during Mania, but I guess he just had knee surgery or something like that. But I want to start doing a lot of the legends now as well. I’d love to get Sting on there, or Taker. Taker keeps running away from me. He’s been scared of me his whole career, keeps calling me Stiffy all the time. Triple H, we talked about that. Stephanie McMahon, listen what really works for me if you guys absolutely spam their Twitter handles out of it and tell them you want to see them in Celtic Warrior Workouts, that makes my job so much easier if you guys just go out there, because then it helps me when I go to them and they agree. So spam them guys, spam the hell out of them.
  • Seth Rollins was on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football this morning.
  • The Miz guest hosted The Rich Eisen Show both yesterday and today.
  • The Babyfaces Podcast interviewed Jade Cargill.
  • Logan Paul uploaded a new vlog.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • WWE uploaded the full Nia Jax vs. Lash Legend match from NXT last night.
  • In an interview with SHAK Wrestling, Torrie Wilson named Rhea Ripley, Becky Lynch, Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, and Tiffany Stratton as some of her favorite women’s wrestlers in WWE.
  • Wilson also praised Dominik Mysterio for how much he’s grown as a performer:
    • It’s crazy to see how far he’s come [since being a kid]. I mean, he is not only an exceptional performer, but his wrestling ability is crazy. And to think when he first came in with Rey [Mysterio], it was just like, okay, he seemed a little quiet, like, you just had no idea that this was going to come out of him. And it’s just really been fun, as I’m sure you think, watching him grow and he just really does remind me of Eddie [Guerrero] also, which people say a lot.
  • Former WWE wrestler Melina told WrestlingNewsCo that she would like to see Evolution treated as the women’s version of WrestleMania:
    • It’s a shame that it’s the second [Evolution event] – the first was a long time ago. The first Evolution was a long time ago, in my opinion. That’s a long time [2018 to now].. and now it’s a beautiful thing to finally see Evolution 2. I hope on everything, there needs to be an annual one. This is the women’s WrestleMania. It should be treated as such.
  • R-Truth spoke to Undisputed about his backstage segment with John Cena from SmackDown last Friday, where they reunited for the first time since Cena became a babyface again:
    • It was so organic. That’s why it came across that way. You could feel it.
    • The proof is in the pudding. For just over a minute promo to be one of the biggest takeaways from the show, come on, I love that.
    • John is the G.O.A.T. in my eyes. Not only is he my childhood hero, I’ve learned a lot from being in the ring with him–and I’ve learned a lot from him in the back.
  • NXT wrestler Adriana Rizzo posted a Tiktok video explaining how her torn ACL happened, saying she had a partial tear a year and a half ago but worked through it until recently having her knee “explode” while doing a drill at practice.
  • Houston Life interviewed Charlotte Flair.
  • Ten Count Media has an interview with Jacy Jayne.
  • MMA journalist Ariel Helwani was the guest on this week’s episode of Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast.

Other Wrestling

  • To promote tonight’s Dynamite episode in his hometown of Cincinnati, Jon Moxley made an appearance on Cincy Lifestyle.
  • Fightful reports that Tony Nese has been working as a coach/agent in AEW.
  • “Speedball” Mike Bailey uploaded a new episode of his vlog.
  • While speaking with The Takedown, TNA President Carlos Silva gave an update on the timeline for when the promotion could agree to a new media rights deal:
    • I think Bound For Glory is a great stake in the sand in terms of us getting everything together as we look to the 2026 year and season.
    • And so, I think August will be quiet. It usually is in the media, in the media deal space, but hopefully we’ll work through a few things, move the ball forward a little bit in August, and then I think in September and October as we get to Bound For Glory, that would absolutely be the goal to try and get it done by then. Or certainly, if it’s not done, have it agreed to.

Monday Update

–Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering the new UFC deal, Raw and tons of other news with Wrestling Observer Radio.  We also have our weekend show up last night.

–After the UFC media rights deal with Paramount + was announced this morning for $7.7 billion over seven years, putting UFC with NASCAR in the No. 4 spot behind NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball in sports rights, the stock went up from $163.25 to $180 per share, meaning about a $1.36 billion gain in value today.  Investors weren’t as sure about the deal from a Paramount/Skydance position since they went down 3.9 percent to $10.12 per share.  If you’re one to keep track of these things, Vince McMahon is now $107.7 million richer than he was last night.

–Raw is tonight in Quebec City.  We’re looking for reports on the show with notes from a live perspective and dark or Main Event matches to [email protected].  They had 9,291 tickets out as of last check.  It’s a major Ice Hockey arena so can hold more than 13,000 for Raw.   The Naomi women’s title match with Iyo Sky is off due to it being said that Naomi isn’t cleared.  Sami vs. Rusev and Becky Lynch vs. Maxxine Dupri are announced plus CM Punk will appear.

–Smackdown did 1.56 million viewers and an 0.48 in 18-49.  I consider those good numbers since it went against  the Cleveland vs. Carolinas NFL preseason game on the NFL network that did 2.24 million viewers and an 0.61.  Smackdown was second place on cable and on all of television on Friday.

–Today would have been the 72nd birthday of Terry Bollea/Hulk Hogan.  FOX will be airing a special tomorrow night in prime time.  I was interviewed for the show.  I’m not advertised on itr so don’t know if I’ll be there.  The names listed as being interviewed were Vince McMahon, Sylvester Stallone, Mick Foley,  Bill Goldberg, Jimmy Hart, Alexa Bliss, Jacob Fatu and  Charlotte Flair.

–Peacemaker season two on HBO MAX debuts on 8/21, with John Cena in the lead role.

–Corey Graves and John Layfield (JBL) will be announcing for TripleMania on Saturday from Arena Ciudad in Mexico City.  That show is sold out and will be the first AAA show since WWE is the actual owner of the company.  The Pagrano & Psycho Clown challenge to Angel & Berto for the AAA tag titles on that show is now  a street fight.

–MLW announced a joint venture with  Danny McBride’s Dn Gato Tequila for a live Lucha Libre show on 11/20 in Charleston, SC at the Charleston Music Hall.  Announced for the show are Matt Riddle, Paul Walter Hauser, Shotzi Blackheart, Mistico, Donovan Dijak, Bhsihp Dyler, Blue Panther, Brock Anderson and more.

–For those keeping track of best matches, I was told today’s Dragon Gate  show in Kobe had a great three-way tag team match to check out. (thanks to Case Lowe)

–DEFY announced that its founder Jim Perry, will reunite with Matt Farmer in running the company with the idea of expansion of the business.

–A documentary on Sabu will debut on 9/15 on Kinema, directed by Joe Clarke (Headstrong) and produced by Rob Van Dam.  The documentary takes you from the beginning of his career and the influence of the Sheik, through ECW and up to the last match of his career against Joey Janela this past April.

–Matt & Jeff Hardy will throw out the first pitch at the 8/19 Minnesota Twins vs. A’s game in Minneapolis at Target Field.  They will be there to promote 9/4 and 9/5 TNA shows at the Minneapolis Armory.

–Ilja Dragunov is being reported as medically cleared by WWE.

Thursday Update

WWE

  • John Cena spoke to People magazine about how grateful he is for his connection to the Make-A-Wish Foundation:
    • I’m so grateful for the time I’ve been able to spend on Make-A-Wish. I’m even more grateful that my fellow [WWE] Superstars, my coworkers, my colleagues, now look at it as an aspirational thing.
    • Because they’re only going to want to meet John Cena for a little bit. And the reason I just drop what I’m doing in that environment to do whatever I can is because the experience can truly make a difference – to talk with the families just like I’m talking to you right now, you get to kit them up for the night, you get to give them stuff that, like I came to see this person, well here’s all the stuff I have.
    • And with me, it’s a great lineup because it’s my ring gear. I’m not giving them like a T-shirt that looks like me in wrestling tights. I’m like, ‘Hey, this is the stuff I’m going to wear. Here, here you go.’
    • And then I’ll ask them for advice. They’ll be like, ‘Oh, you should do this move.’ And I’ll just go put it in the match, because we’re entertainment. I think that’s the absolute magic of sports entertainment. No one in the audience knows that that young person was like, ‘Hey, I want you to do this move.’ And it will seamlessly be put into the performance, but it will affect both of us on a plane that’s indescribable.
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Ivy Nile discussed how much she admires Chad Gable as a performer:
    • Chad has been in this business for so, so long. When I first started with the company, I kind of started unlike anyone else. I started three months before COVID hit, and then I was in the COVID era as one of those people in the audience behind the hockey windows, or whatever. So I was one of those people always there cheering and whatever. And at the time, you know, he was Shorty G at the time. It was crazy to see his growth from there, because I’ve always admired him since then, because it’s crazy no matter what you give him, he kills it. So I think once you get to that level of whatever they throw at you, they know that you can kill it and run with it. It’s such an amazing skill to have that. I aspire to be that.”
  • TMZ interviewed Brooke Hogan about her father Hulk Hogan’s passing.
  • In a post to her Instagram stories, Brooke offered to personally pay for an autopsy to be performed given the questions she has about her father’s death:
    • I’m glad to see that my dad has not been cremated and that [Hogan’s wife] Sky is waiting because of family questions. With all of the speculation and uncertainty of my dad’s death, I want to personally offer to pay for an autopsy if that’s what it takes to get it done. My dad’s dignity and legacy deserves it
  • Billboard published an interview with Dominik Mysterio.
  • Logan Paul uploaded a new episode of his vlog.
  • Jelly Roll gave a motivational speech to the Tennessee Titans as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.

Other Wrestling

  • Mercedes Mone has a vlog documenting her recent trip to Vienna, Austria.
  • Renee Paquette interviewed Blake Christian & Lee Johnson on a new episode of AEW Close Up.
  • The Grizzled Young Veterans were the guests on AEW Unrestricted this week.
  • AEW wished Kris Statlander a happy 30th birthday.
  • The Battleground podcast interviewed Moose & AJ Francis.
  • Colby Corino thanked everyone who has donated to his GoFundMe campaign, which has raised more than $15,000 so far to benefit him in his recovery from emergency neck/spine surgery:
    • I really want to thank everyone who has reached out/donated to my GFM in the past week. I’ve been trying to get back to everyone individually, but the (positively) overwhelming support and love everyone has shown me has been, well, overwhelming, in a good way though.
    • For those who don’t know, I had to undergo emergency neck/spine surgery last Thursday. It was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever had to deal with and I never anticipated something like this would happen, especially so suddenly. The scariest part is I probably wouldn’t have even gone to the hospital if it wasn’t for @ariana.corino making me go when she noticed I had difficulty walking after using a massage gun on my neck one night.
    • But after 5 nights in the hospital, a hair and beard cut, and picking up my old man walker, I am finally home!
    • I have no idea how long I’ll be out for, even the shortest estimates place my return to the ring far on the horizon, but at least I will be able to take it one day at a time at home with my wife, son, and our animals.
    • Given that wrestling was our family’s primary source of income, you’ll probably be seeing me post merch for sale very soon, but if you’d like to donate to the GFM set up by @sean_henderson_w (who deserves a post all to himself), I’ll post that in the comments
    • Thank you everyone who’s shown me love this past week. It really has helped me accept this situation and focus on my recovery and moving on to becoming the strongest I’ve ever been.
    • No roadblock is big enough to keep me out of a ring. It’s just a matter of time
  • Tomohiro Ishii will face off against Jay Joshua at Revolution Pro Wrestling’s Global Wars UK event on August 22.
  • Julia Hart & Skye Blue vs. Millie McKenzie & Safire Reed has been announced for Pro Wrestling Eve’s show in London on August 23.
  • Raven announced that his documentary “Nevermore: The Raven Effect” will have its first screening in Lexington, Massachusetts on August 23: “The documentary will be released over the next couple months playing in select theaters first and then streaming or video on demand. First screening Aug 23 in Boston.”
  • WrestlingNewsCo has an interview with Lisa Marie Varon (former WWE wrestler Victoria).

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • WWE uploaded the full Sol Ruca vs. Tatum Paxley NXT Women’s North American Championship match from last night.
  • Cody Rhodes was on SportsCenter today discussing WWE’s new partnership with ESPN.
  • Pat McAfee posted a tweet reacting to the news that WWE PLEs are coming to ESPN’s direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2026. In his response, McAfee – one of ESPN’s top stars – continued to take shots at the “powerless” ESPN suits he believes have been trying to sabotage him behind the scenes:
    • Congrats to the @WWE and @espn on getting a historic PLE deal done.
    • Great to see 2 powerhouses of sports and entertainment come together.
    • I assume all the mid level, powerless, bum ass suits at ESPN will attempt to muddy this somehow (out of context leaks/ignorant anonymous opinions/etc.) but, in the end.. this agreement will outlive the dinosaurs currently guarding desks in Bristol and this deal will be great for ESPN.
    • Cheers to the future
  • John Cena is featured on the cover of the August 18 edition of People magazine.
  • Trish Stratus announced that she will not be able to make her scheduled appearance in the United Kingdom at Comic Con Wales on August 9-10:
    • Hi everyone, it breaks my heart to share that I won’t be able to attend the autograph signing in Wales this weekend. My mom needs me by her side right now, and with the distance involved, the travel is simply too far. If anything were to happen, I’d be too far away to get back quickly and that’s not a risk I can take at this time.
    • To those who bought tickets – I’m so sorry to disappoint you. I promise I will come back to Wales and we will meet another time! I’m truly sorry to disappoint anyone, please know I never take your support for granted, and it means the world to me.
    • I’m aware I have several upcoming appearances scheduled on the #Trish25 Tour and as of now, those are still planned. I’m working on putting the right support in place at home to allow me to step away when needed – but for this particular event, I had to make the difficult decision to stay close to home.
    • Thank you so much for your understanding and compassion. Your prayers and positive energy for my mom mean everything right now.
  • NXT wrestler Brinley Reece got engaged to her boyfriend Marcus Aponte on August 2: “BRB- Changing my last name! 8.2.25 was the best day of my life. This moment was more magical than my younger self could have ever dreamed of. I love you, forever!!”
  • Jacy Jayne was the guest on this week’s episode of Celtic Warrior Workouts with Sheamus.
  • The My Mom’s Basement podcast interviewed Dominik Mysterio.
  • WWE followed Dominik backstage at SummerSlam for a behind-the-scenes vlog.
  • Charlotte Flair made an appearance on Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe.

Other Wrestling

  • While speaking with the Ohio News-Herald, Willow Nightingale opened up about her decision to re-sign with AEW:
    • The idea of entertaining free agency didn’t even really cross my mind. I mean, obviously, the thought was there because it’s a business at the end of the day, but I am so happy where I am, and I feel like my work here is so far from done. And the things that I love about wrestling the most are afforded to me here. I do get to travel and see the world, wrestle other places, wrestle other people. But, also, I get to be a part of our locker room, and it’s changed and grown since I’ve started there, let alone from the people who were there from day one. Penelope Ford is someone who comes to mind, who was really an OG AEW wrestler, and she was gone for two years with a hip injury. She came back and instantly had as much passion as when she started. She and I don’t see eye-to-eye in the ring. We don’t deal with things the same way. We’ve got different mentalities. But I have to applaud someone who kind of came from a different time, and as the locker room has pushed for more and been hungry to get better, she has done the same, and that is — that’s the kind of locker room I want to be a part of.
    • You know, who’s just, like, ‘OK, we’re evolving, we’re growing, I’m gonna get with it?’… We all want each other’s spot. Whoever’s at the top — (AEW women’s world champion) Toni Storm, (TBS champion) Mercedes Mone — we all want to be you. And that’s the company I want to be in. I don’t want to be the best of people who are just happy to be where they are. I want to be the best people who are hungry and trying to make everybody better.
  • Nyla Rose is challenging Nightshade for the Eve Championship at Pro Wrestling Eve’s show in London on August 23.
  • After receiving backlash, Kiera Hogan posted a statement explaining a reality show clip where she called wrestling a “stepping stone” for her:
    • Yes, I said ‘pro wrestling was always going to be a stepping stone for other things.’ And I meant that.
    • Because wrestling has always been my first love – but I’m multi-talented and unapologetically ambitious. I knew from the jump that wrestling would open doors for me in fashion, TV, and beyond. Just like it has for so many others before me.
    • Y’all cheer when wrestlers land movie roles, runway shows, or makeup deals… but get mad when I say it out loud?
    • I’m not here to play small or limit myself to one lane. I’m here to build an empire.
  • Here is everything that’s been announced for Thursday’s episode of TNA Impact:
    • TNA World Champion Trick Williams kicks off the show
    • TNA Knockouts Champion Jacy Jayne defends against Ash By Elegance
    • Joe Hendry vs. Mustafa Ali
    • TNA International Champion Steve Maclin defends against Jake Something
    • Santino Marella makes an announcement regarding TNA Emergence
    • Mara Sade (former NXT wrestler Jakara Jackson) in action
    • The Elegance Brand (Heather By Elegance & M By Elegance) vs. Lei Ying Lee & Xia Brookside
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Mike Santana named AJ Styles as his dream opponent:
    • AJ Styles. Just especially being put in this position in TNA as being that new guy and the new face, and they call me The Standard and stuff like that. I think it’d be amazing. Of course, there’s other people that I love to work with over there [in WWE], and I have a lot of people that I know and that I came up on the indies with over there. But to me, AJ is the guy.
  • Prestige Wrestling announced that all profits from its August 23 show in Portland, Oregon will be donated to RAINN (the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). Tickets are donation-based with fans choosing how much to pay. The event was announced after a different local promotion attempted to book Joey Ryan, though that booking has already been canceled.

Monday Update

–Bryan and I will be back tonight covering more on Brock Lesnar and all the news of the day along with Raw.  We have shows on both nights on SummerSlam up on the site, and talked extensively about the Lesnar decision on the Sunday night show.

–The Ring reported today that Eddie Hearn confirmed that Jake Paul is serious about fighting Anthoiny Joshua next.  He said negotiations are set to continue over the coming weeks.

–SummerSlam day one ranked first on the day it aired live in Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the U.K., Canada and Mexico among all television shows on Netflix.  It ranked No. 3 in India.  An interesting note is that in most of those countries the Saturday show was listed as “SummerSlam Sunday,” so I have a feeling they may combine the two shows as one for a rating when it comes out tomorrow.  Because that was a weird red flag.

–Raw tonight is at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.  After three straight nights in the market, the advance was 8,300 this morning.  Seth Rollins will explain his ruse that he said nobody knew about but everyone tells me everyone knew about, Sheamus vs. Rusev was announced plus Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss are on the show.  Neither John Cena nor Brock Lesnar are advertised.  Cena is scheduled for Friday night .

–Smackdown on Friday was the No. 1 show on television with 1.54 million viewers and an 0.46 in 18-49.  It was down from the week before, but that was the day after the Hulk Hogan death so it should have been down.  Plus, 18-49 wasn’t down much at all.  Not much competition, the top show on network was a rerun of Happy’s Place on NBC at 0.23 and head-to-head the top show on cable was the Savannah Bananas on ESPN at 486,000 viewers and 0.11.  PFL did 283,000 and 0.07 in 18-49 with two tournament finals.

–We’re looking for your thoughts on both nights of SummerSlam, so you can leave a thumbs  up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle from  each show along with a best and worst match from each show to [email protected]

–We’re also looking for reports from the Barclays Center and Raw with any Main Event matches or anything else notable off TV to [email protected]

–Naked Gun, in which Cody Rhodes has a role, opened No. 3 at the box office this weekend behind Fantastic Four:  First Steps and Bad Guys 2.  The movie is estimated at $17 million in the opening weekend.

–One Hulk Hogan documentary that I was part of as well as Bill Goldberg and The Hardys is up on Fox Nation.  I  haven’t seen it.  FOX as a network airs a different documentary on 8/12 at 8 p.m. that will debut on Hulu the next day.  I was interviewed for that one as well along with Sylvester Stallone, Vince McMahon, Mick Foley, Bill Goldberg, Jimmy Hart, Alexa Bliss, Mark Henry, Jacob Fatu and Charlotte Flair.

–G-1 continues in Osaka at 5:30 a.m. Eastern tomorrow morning with B block matches with Yoshi-Hashi vs. Konosuke Takeshita, Great O’Khan vs. Ren Nartia, El Phantasmo vs. Drilla Moloney and Zack Sabre Jr. vs.  Shingo Takagi.

–I haven’t talked much about the tournament with so much going on, but the wrestling in this tournament has been great.  The booking has been largely keeping the standings close and almost everyone alive.

–Prime Video announced that Head of State, the movie starring John Cena and Idris Elba, has, according to Amazon Prime, done more than 75 million viewers in the last month worldwide.  It would be the third most successful movie on Prime behind Red One starring Dwayn e Johnson and The Accountant 2 starring Ben Affleck.

–The Pickup, which features Roman Reigns in a key role, will be released on Wednesday on Amazon Prime video.

–The book “Life is Fighting,” an autobiography of Kevin Kesar/Karrion Kross, comes out tomorrow.

–TKO has its investors call at 5 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday.

–Bishop  Dyer has been added to the 9/13 MLW show in North Richland Hills, TX.

–A trial date has been set for Iabreehm Uazeed, the man charged with the kidnapping and murder of Aniah Blanchad, the 19-year-old stepdaughter of former UFC star Wlat Harris.  He was arrested six years ago for the crime but there have been delays after delays until the judge set a date for March 2, 2026.  He faces three counts of first degree murder and could get the death penalty if found guilty.

–Flip Gordon suffered a legit knee injury in the first fall of his match on Friday at Arena Mexico but he was posing for photos with MJF after the show so the impression is that it wasn’t too bad.

–The New York Times ran a front page story on Flip Gordon, the idea of an American military veteran as a babyface at Arena Mexico. Gordon said that he had signed a mutli-year contract wth  CMLL and has a second child on the way.  (thanks to Bill King)

–Mistico, Neon, Mascara Dorada, Hechicero and Stigma are scheduled for AEW on Wednesday in Cleveland.  Most likely they will be part of the ROH tapings.

–Rafael Gonzalez Lopez, legendary referee Rafa el Maya in Mexico, passed away yesterday.  He  was 72.  He was around forever in CMLL.  He was considered the prototype referee who didn’t take crap from the rudos.

–Jeff Kavanagh aka Jeff Scott, a ring announcer for TNA 2017-2020 and also ring announcer for Border City WRestling and Maple Leaf Pro, was diagnosed with stage four liver and colon  cancer.  Best wishes to him in this heavy challenge.  A Go Fund me has been established for him.

Alberto El Patron, billed as Alberto Del Rio, voiced over the character Jorge El Guapo in the animated movie The Bad Guys 2 which premiers today in the U.S. and debuted yesterday in Mexico.  This is for the  Spanish language release.  I’m not sure if he’s involved in the English version of the movie.  Roberto Figueroa, a close friend of Alberto’s and current AAA television announcer, voices over the ring announcer in the movie in Spanish and Hugo Savinovich does the voice of the ring announcer in the English version.

A correction on the official title of Jeremy Borash from today’s issue.  We wrote he was Director of Latin America operations stemming from a Figueroa interview.  Borash’s official title is Vice President of Content and Development.

Thursday Update

WWE

  • The White House streamed today’s executive order signing where Paul “Triple H” Levesque was among those named to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Linda McMahon also attended the press conference.
  • Levesque posted a tweet thanking everyone who has watched WWE: Unreal on Netflix: “The reception of @WWE: UNREAL on @netflix has been incredible so far. Our goal has been to show the passion and drive that goes into our weekly television, as well as showcasing our talent through the highs and lows. Thank you all for watching.”
  • This week’s episode of “What’s Your Story?” is a conversation between Stephanie McMahon and John Cena.
  • On the show, Stephanie mentioned that – before Triple H’s heart issues in 2021 – she was always worried about losing him early. Now that he’s survived that, the feeling has gone away and she is no longer worried about him dying young. She opened up about realizing what’s important in life:
    • I believe in helping people as much as you can, if you can, even if that’s just listening to them, even if that’s just smiling at somebody that you don’t know. My favorite thing in the world is smiling at a little kid walking by and they smile back. That’s like the greatest feeling. Simple things are what it’s all about.
    • And I think that’s what you learn, if you learn, the longer you live. It’s not about the material stuff. It’s about the stuff that matters most. And, you know, I almost lost Paul, my husband. And what’s weird, and I haven’t talked about it, is I always had a feeling that I was going to lose him early. I just had that feeling. And after we got through everything, that feeling went away.
    • It’s like a pattern that was supposed to have been changed. And it was, I mean, such a gift, truly. And then I started going through all this stuff in the company, and I realized there is nothing more important to me than my family, than my husband and my kids. That’s what matters most, and I want to give as much time as I possibly can. I’ve given everything I possibly have to the business, you know, my whole life. And I wanted to give back to them. And that’s when I took that first leave of absence, which didn’t last very long. But I knew what mattered, and I know what matters now.
    • And I believe that love is what life is all about. And if you can help somebody in any way, I think that that is what it’s all about. You know, it’s about giving back.
  • Damian Priest and Zelina Vega surprised a young fan by inviting them and their family to attend SummerSlam and meet Rhea Ripley.
  • WWE wrestlers including Vega, Aleister Black, Raquel Rodriguez, and Roxanne Perez volunteered at the Nourish NJ soup kitchen today.
  • Vega was interviewed on a new episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet.
  • Cody Rhodes made appearances on ESPN First Take and WFAN Radio.
  • Jey & Jimmy Uso took The GQ Brothers Quiz, answering questions to see how well they really know each other.
  • Busted Open Radio has an interview with Jade Cargill.
  • The Toronto Sun’s No Holds Barred podcast spoke with Sami Zayn ahead of SummerSlam.
  • WWE uploaded a SummerSlam week vlog featuring Dominik Mysterio.
  • Logan Paul also uploaded a new vlog episode.
  • Lex Luger reacted to the passing of Hulk Hogan: “This one really hit me. Needed some time to process it all. Thank you Hulkster for all you did for me and so many others. My heartfelt prayers and condolences for your family and closest friends. I will see you again in heaven my friend. Save me a ringside seat”

  • WWE did not air a new episode of WWE Speed on X/Twitter today, meaning it’s now been three weeks since the show stopped airing without explanation.
  • Rhea Ripley spoke to Allenownz Wrasslin about her connection with Liv Morgan:
    • Liv is someone that I love deeply. Our feud that we’ve had in WWE – it’s gone on for so long now. And I feel like every time we come back to it, we don’t get to touch on everything that’s actually happened throughout our careers together.
    • This goes back to like NXT – she gave me her NXT locker when she left to be a part of the main roster. We’ve always had some sort of connection. So to be able to go through and have this continuously long story that sort of gets threaded together but then forgot about but then threaded together, it’s really cool to see it all come together in the end. Especially knowing how many problems there were with it and how many ups and downs, like with the injuries…
    • She’s like my story nemesis – my wrestling nemesis, my everything nemesis, but like, at the same time, like my wrestling love. It’s a really weird combination of emotions and story that we have together.
  • On The Bill Simmons Podcast, Cody Rhodes named his loss to Roman Reigns from WrestleMania 39 as his favorite match of his career.
  • Paul “Triple H” Levesque will be a guest at the TEDSports convention in Indianapolis this September.
  • Levesque made an appearance on WFAN Radio with hosts Brandon Tierney & Sal Licata.
  • Sean “X-Pac” Waltman will be in attendance at Friday’s WWE ID Showcase event when the first-ever WWE ID Champions are crowned: “I’m proud to coach members of the @WWEID program. I’ll be at their ID Showcase this Friday 8/1 in Rutherford, NJ for the crowning of their 1st ever Men’s & Women’s Championships. This is an exceptionally talented group of aspiring pro wrestlers. Come see them if you’re in town.”
  • Charlotte Flair shared a photo of her training with other legacy wrestlers Ava (Simone Johnson), Lexis King (Brian Pillman Jr.), and Uriah Connors (Brogan Finlay).

Other Wrestling

  • Tony Khan announced an appearance by Christian Cage for tonight’s AEW Dynamite: “For the first time since The Patriarch was betrayed by Nick & Shayna Wayne + Kip Sabian, and @RatedRCope then told him go find himself at #AEWAllInTexas, Christian Cage returns TONIGHT!”
  • Samoa Joe was the guest on a new edition of Talk is Jericho.
  • Going Ringside spoke with Paul Wight.
  • ESPN has a feature story on Chris Bey and his recovery from the near-fatal broken neck he suffered in October 2024. In the article, Bey discussed potentially returning to the ring in the future:
    • I call this ‘the greatest story ever told’ because I was living my dream at the highest level that people told me would be unattainable. I had a life-altering injury and potentially life-ending injury. But through the grace of God, with all the odds stacked against me, not only am I back on my feet, but I’m in the process of becoming an athlete again. And should that day come when we get to end it my way, when the music hits and I come back out to the ring in full wrestling gear and a pair of boots, it’s just the greatest story ever told.
  • Bey noted that, while he’s out of action, he’s interested in helping the next generation by working behind the scenes in a capacity like producing or writing: “I should use my talents in any way possible to help continue and push forward the next generation.”
