‘WWE: Unreal’ reveals scrapped plans for SummerSlam 2025

The new season of “WWE: Unreal” shows how differently SummerSlam 2025 could have looked if early ideas for the show came to fruition.

In episode four of season two of “Unreal,” a whiteboard is listed showing potential matches for SummerSlam. They include Roman Reigns vs. Bron Breakker, a Bella Twins return, and Finn Balor bringing back his Demon character for a match against Judgment Day stablemate Dominik Mysterio.

  • World Heavyweight Championship match: CM Punk vs. Gunther
  • Roman Reigns vs. Bron Breakker
  • Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins (w/ Bronson Reed)
  • Women’s World Championship match: IYO SKY vs. Naomi
  • Rhea Ripley vs. Asuka
  • Jey Uso vs. Rusev
  • Finn Balor (The Demon) vs. Dominik Mysterio
  • Women’s Intercontinental Championship match: Bayley vs. Becky Lynch
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match: The Bella Twins vs. Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez

Of those, Punk vs. Gunther is the only match that happened exactly as it was listed. They main evented night one of the two-night PLE with Seth Rollins then cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Punk. Rollins’ cash-in is one of the key plot points of “Unreal” season two with WWE trying to keep up the ruse involving his kayfabe knee injury.

Liv Morgan’s shoulder injury from 2025 derailed plans for her to feud with Nikki Bella. The Bella Twins vs. Morgan & Rodriguez tag match never happened — and Brie Bella has yet to return to WWE alongside her sister.

Another whiteboard shown on “Unreal” lists Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship and Trish Stratus vs. TBD as SummerSlam matches. Rhodes vs. Cena ended up headlining night two of the PLE. Stratus did not compete on the card.

Tiffany Stratton addresses criticism of WWE SummerSlam match

Her match received some criticism for how short it was, but Tiffany Stratton was pleased with how things went at WWE SummerSlam 2025.

At night one of this year’s event, Stratton faced off against Jade Cargill with the WWE Women’s Championship on the line. A title change seemed possible, but Stratton instead defeated Cargill in seven minutes to remain champion.

During an appearance on The Babyfaces podcast, Stratton addressed the criticism the match received from fans, saying she felt like seven minutes was all they really needed given that her storyline with Cargill wasn’t some huge blood feud.

“I feel like we didn’t have this like insane life or death story going into SummerSlam, so I didn’t really feel like we needed — like you said — an insane 40-minute long match,” Stratton said. “I thought it was a very competitive match, it was very fast. And I think that’s all we really needed. So I’m actually really pleased with how my match went at SummerSlam with Jade Cargill.”

Stratton noted that she was “so nervous” going into the show because this was her first SummerSlam.

“Going into SummerSlam, I was so nervous. It was my first SummerSlam ever,” she said. “So that alone was just so nerve-wracking. But, thankfully, I pulled through and I beat Little Miss Jade Cargill.”

Stratton has held the WWE Women’s Championship since cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase on Nia Jax this January. Cargill, Jax, and Giulia have been positioned as three of the top potential challengers in the SmackDown women’s division.

On The Babyfaces podcast, Stratton named Rhea Ripley and Becky Lynch as dream opponents she is hoping to face at some point in the future.

Bret Hart says he doesn’t feel appreciated by WWE following SummerSlam incident

Bret Hart wasn’t given a seat.

In an interview that took place at the Vaughan Comic Con this weekend, The WWE Hall of Famer revealed that he was invited to the two-day event that took place earlier this month to sit in the crowd. But once he got there, he was told there wasn’t a seat for him.

“They invited me down…told me they wanted me to be in the crowd. And then they told me once I got there, they told me they didn’t have any seats. But I noticed Kevin Nash got a seat. Maybe I finally realized that I don’t feel they fully appreciate me, even after Hulk [Hogan’s] passing. There’s no certain appreciation for anything I did.”

Hart was a part of another interview during SummerSlam week where he felt that Hulk Hogan wasn’t that welcoming when he became WWE Champion in 1992 and went as far as to say Hogan held him back when they were in WCW back in the late 1990s.

Earlier this year, Hart’s match with Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 was inducted in to WWE’s Hall of Fame, with both wrestlers accepting the Immortal Moment award.

Triple H praises WWE crew following SummerSlam

With SummerSlam weekend now over, Paul “Triple H” Levesque is showing appreciation for everyone who made the show possible.

SummerSlam was a two-night event for the first time ever this year, taking place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday and Sunday. Levesque sent out a tweet this morning thanking all of WWE’s behind-the-scenes workers who made the show a success, calling them the “most dedicated, passionate, and hardest working team in the business.”

“SummerSlam doesn’t just happen…It’s built from the ground up by the most dedicated, passionate, and hardest working team in the business,” he wrote. “From lighting rigs and camera shots, to pyro and production trucks — this crew is the engine behind it all.

“Thank you to every single member of the @WWE team who made these incredible nights possible. We don’t just put on a show—we create moments that last a lifetime.”

New World Champions were crowned at the end of each night of SummerSlam, with Seth Rollins leaving night one as World Heavyweight Champion and Cody Rhodes winning the Undisputed WWE Championship on night two. The second night also saw Brock Lesnar make his surprise return to WWE for the first time since his name was mentioned in Janel Grant’s lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE.

SummerSlam will be two nights again next year with U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota hosting the show in August 2026.

WWE clarifies when they contacted Brock Lesnar for SummerSlam return

Michael Cole has clarified when WWE contacted Brock Lesnar to make his return.

During Monday’s Raw, a replay was shown of Lesnar’s attack on John Cena. Cole then took time to say that WWE contacted Lesnar a few weeks ago to bring him back.

“Earlier today, I had the opportunity to sit down with WWE President Nick Khan and WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque. And I asked them a simple question: ‘When was it determined that Brock Lesnar would return to WWE?'” he said. “They told me they reached out to Brock a couple of weeks ago and said, ‘We believe it’s time for you to come home.’ Brock Lesnar said ‘Let’s do it’ and here we are.”

Lesnar returned on Sunday and immediately set his sights on John Cena, who had just lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes in a street fight. Cena will respond to Lesnar’s attack on this Friday’s SmackDown.

Dave Meltzer reported on Monday that WWE legally cleared Brock Lesnar four weeks ago, while Bryan Alvarez reported he was listed as part of WWE’s active roster two weeks ago. He had been kept off WWE programming after he was named in Janel Grant’s lawsuit, where the former WWE employee alleged that Vince McMahon attempted to use sexual favors from her as an incentive for Lesnar to sign a new WWE contract.

Triple H on Brock Lesnar’s return at WWE SummerSlam: ‘Incredible to have him back’

Triple H has spoken out on Brock Lesnar’s return.

During the SummerSlam post-show press conference, the WWE COO commented on the show-closing angle that saw Brock Lesnar arrive and lay out John Cena with the F5. Triple H said that the return was about what he expected.

“My reaction was exactly what I thought it was going to be, which is if there was a roof on this place it wouldn’t be there anymore,” he said.”The dynamic in the room changes when The Beast is here. Seeing Brock Lesnar come back, anything you thought was happening goes out the window because the factor of Brock now just changes that dynamic. It makes it so unpredictable. So yeah, incredible, just incredible to have him back.”

At one point, the crowd behind the post-show set chanted for Karrion Kross. Triple H seemingly mistook it for “We want Brock” chants by mistake, responding that if they wanted Brock, they got Brock. Triple H was at the post-show set as part of a new post-show format, dropping questions from the media in favor of taking questions from WWE roundtable personalities.

Triple H also insinuated that Lesnar was a part of John Cena’s wishlist of final opponents before his upcoming retirement in December.

“For me, this is sort of…this is John Cena’s wishlist…it’s him writing the last chapter of his book, and I think people saw a conversation with us where he said we’d have to screw it up pretty badly to ruin his career. But it’s not about that for me,” he said. “It’s about John being able to go out the way he wants to go out, to write his chapter. I know what that’s like as a performer. I know what that’s like for everybody to feel that, and I think for John to be able to do what he wants to do. One of the very first things I said to him was ‘Who do you want, and how?’ and we’re working through that.”

Lesnar had been out of WWE since the summer of 2023. He was set to return at last year’s Royal Rumble when he was named in Janel Grant’s lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE. All references to Lesnar were dropped soon after, including being removed from that year’s WWE video game.

Dominik Mysterio defeats AJ Styles in WWE SummerSlam IC title match

Night two of SummerSlam 2025 saw Dominik Mysterio make a successful defense of his Intercontinental title.

Dominik is still Intercontinental Champion after defeating AJ Styles at Sunday’s event. The younger Dominik outsmarted his veteran challenger to get the win. Styles attempted to use a Calf Crusher submission, but Dominik had loosened his boot and was able to easily slip out of the move. He then struck Styles with the boot behind the referee’s back before delivering a frog splash for the three count.

There were multiple tributes to the legendary Eddie Guerrero during the match. For his entrance, Styles and his son Avery entered in a Guerrero-esque lowrider. Styles also played mind games with Dominik by wearing an outfit inspired by the gear Guerrero wore for SummerSlam 2005 — the pay-per-view where Guerrero and Rey Mysterio’s storyline famously culminated in a ladder match for the custody of Dominik

Another moment in the match saw Dominik pay tribute to Guerrero by faking that Styles had laid him out with a chair, but Styles followed suit by wrapping the chair around his head and faking like Dominik had hit him too.

Dominik’s Intercontinental title reign began at WrestleMania this April. He now has the chance to become a double champ later this month at Lucha Libre AAA’s Triplemania, where the AAA Mega Championship will be on the line in a four-way match between El Hijo del Vikingo, Dominik, Dragon Lee, and El Grande Americano. That August 16 show will stream on WWE’s YouTube channel in both English and Spanish.

The Hardy Boyz, Dudleyz appear at WWE SummerSlam

Two all-time great tag teams were in attendance for night two of WWE SummerSlam 2025.

In honor of August being the 25th anniversary of the first-ever TLC match, The Hardy Boyz and Dudleyz attended SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey tonight and were shown in the front row. Along with Edge & Christian, they pioneered the TLC match with the bout first taking place at SummerSlam 2000.

Edge & Christian, the victors of the inaugural tables, ladders & chairs match, are both signed to AEW and therefore were not at SummerSlam tonight. Michael Cole did mention them on commentary, however.

WWE recently did a countdown of the top 25 matches in SummerSlam history, ranking The Hardyz vs. Dudleyz vs. Edge & Christian at number six.

Matt & Jeff Hardy are the current TNA Tag Team Champions — and they’re set to face off against Bubba Ray & D-Von Dudley one last time at TNA Bound for Glory this October. With the close working relationship WWE has with TNA, Cole plugged the Bound for Glory matchup when the two legendary teams appeared tonight.

The SmackDown tag division was featured in a six-pack TLC match on tonight’s card, with Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy of The Wyatt Sicks defeating Motor City Machine Guns, The Street Profits, DIY, Fraxiom, and Andrade & Rey Fenix to retain the WWE Tag Team titles.

Naomi retains Women’s World title at WWE SummerSlam

Naomi is still the Women’s World Champion.

The opening match of Sunday’s SummerSlam saw the World Champion defeat Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY in a triple threat match. The finish of the match had Ripley plant SKY with the riptide off the middle rope. However as Ripley went for the pin, Naomi cradled Ripley from behind and grabbed the tights for the win.

Naomi’s father, Shawn McCray, played the guitar during her entrance as she made her way to the ring.

As a result of the victory, Naomi will next defend the Women’s World Championship against Stephanie Vaquer at Clash in Paris on August 31. Vaquer won the number one contender’s battle royal that took place at WWE Evolution, earning the title match.

On that same show, Naomi cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase to win the Women’s World Championship, surprising both SKY and Ripley as they were wrestling for the title. On the following Raw, all three women argued enough for Adam Pearce to announce the three-way title match for SummerSlam.

Is WWE SummerSlam sold out tonight? Night 2 ticket update.

Fans wondering whether WWE SummerSlam is sold out tonight should know that Night 2 is close…but not quite there yet. The 2025 edition is the first-ever two-night SummerSlam, taking place on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and has been riding a wave of demand all weekend.

WWE SummerSlam Ticket Sales Update

According to the latest morning update from the official WrestleTix X account, Night 2 has just 610 tickets remaining out of a configured setup of 54,698, with 54,088 already distributed, a jump of 433 tickets sold since the previous day, when roughly 1,043 seats were unsold. That kind of velocity, so close to showtime, puts the event firmly in “likely to sell out” territory unless demand suddenly softens or a handful of returns appear.

The urgency is underlined by the broader weekend picture. Night 1 was already operating on a knife-edge heading into its show, with fewer than 1,000 tickets left and reports labelling it “nearly sold out,” signalling the kind of appetite WWE has generated for this dual-night spectacle. Combined weekend sales have been tracking toward a record-breaking total of over 100,000 fans, reinforcing that the momentum behind SummerSlam 2025 remains strong and that Night 2’s remaining seats are being chased hard.

WWE SummerSlam Saturday notes: Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins, new post-show format

Notes from the fallout of WWE SummerSlam Saturday.

The shocking main event angle had Seth Rollins cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, revealing that his knee injury was nothing but a ruse. He came to the ring, attacked CM Punk and quickly pinned him to win the World Heavyweight title. Backstage, his wife Becky Lynch posted her reaction to the title win on social media, with a caption reading: “Don’t believe everything you see on the internet.”

During the SummerSlam post-show, Seth Rollins briefly came out and celebrated with his new championship alongside Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed.

The post-show featured no Q&A segments for the media and consisted mostly of WWE stars being asked in-character questions by the post-show roundtable. When Triple H came out, it was noted by Joe Tessitore that this is a new format where Triple H would be speaking to the audience directly. The media Q&A portion of the post-show had been de-emphesized in recent months, with more time being spent on backstage interviews and roundtable discussions.

Jelly Roll loses WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam

Jelly Roll put in a strong effort and had the fans on his side, but he ultimately came up short in his WWE in-ring debut.

The 40-year-old country music star teamed with Randy Orton at SummerSlam night one, losing to Logan Paul & Drew McIntyre. It was Paul who got the victory for the heels, pinning Jelly Roll after the two celebrities were the only two left in the ring.

Jelly Roll got off to a good start before Paul took him out with a frog splash through the announce table. WWE teased that Jelly Roll wouldn’t be able to continue, but he refused to abandon his tag partner. Jelly Roll returned to the match, delivering a chokeslam to Paul and a Bossman slam to McIntyre. He then hit a powerslam on Paul, but McIntyre broke up the pin before the referee could count to three.

The closing stretch saw McIntyre hit a Claymore on Jelly Roll before Orton laid out McIntyre with an RKO. Paul then threw Orton into the ring post and hit another frog splash on Jelly Roll for the victory.

Jelly Roll, who has lost approximately 200 pounds since his highest weight, did reach a huge milestone by weighing in at 299 pounds for tonight’s match. It’s the first time he’s been under 300 pounds since grade school.

A longtime WWE fan, Jelly Roll earned respect from wrestlers and fans for how hard he worked to prepare for this match. He was training at the WWE Performance Center “every day” for weeks leading into SummerSlam. In the first week of that training, he suffered a broken pinky finger.

“He’s working as hard as anyone — if not harder — than anyone that I’ve ever seen come into our world,” Orton told ESPN’s Get Up prior to SummerSlam.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted out a video of him and Jelly Roll sharing a moment backstage after the match.
