Tony Khan details why he agreed to not renew William Regal’s AEW contract

Tony Khan made the decision to allow William Regal to return to WWE so that Regal could help train his son, NXT wrestler Charlie Dempsey.

The AEW President revealed on a pre-ROH Final Battle media call on Monday that he first learned Regal was hoping to return to WWE during what was a difficult time for the Khan family. Tony Khan’s mother suffered two strokes and required an operation to remove a spot on her heart in the months following All Out. Khan was at home with his parents for his 40th birthday on October 10 when he received a call about Regal.

“I watched Monday Night Football at my parents’ house with my parents. My mom was hooked up to a lot of machines and I was just praying that my mom’s surgery would go okay. That same night I got a phone call and it was saying that William Regal has approached Megha and it was all very legitimate, valid stuff.”

Khan continued to say that Regal requested AEW not pick up the option year on his contract after the deal expired at the end of the year.

“Basically, he’s got a son who works at another wrestling promotion and he really wanted us at the end of the year when we had the option to renew the contract, he was asking that we would not. Nothing bad, we were having a great time working together but that this was an opportunity for him to go back and work in his golden years of his career with his son.”

“It’s a very complex situation for AEW because he’s a huge part of what we’re doing on-screen, and we really value him, and there’s multiple storylines that he’s involved in at this point. As we were going to Toronto that week, obviously I had a lot on my mind.”

Khan continued to talk about finding out that his mother would be having surgery to remove a spot on her heart during this time.

“This was the timing of the request from Regal and I really had to think about it. Both those shows in Toronto were very successful and then at the end of the week, my mom had this heart surgery and when I got back, my dad and my sister had already been there at the hospital since the previous day.”

Khan said his mother’s surgery was successful but she had a challenging recovery in front of her. He was spending his nights in the hospital with her at this time.

“My mom was asleep and I got a message from Regal and it was asking if we could talk. I made time to talk to him and I went outside the hospital. So, I’m sitting out on a park bench out in front of the Mayo clinic on Sunday night and we had this really long, good talk and it was very positive. He really had good intentions, I’d like to say, for why he wanted to go back. It made a lot of sense to me that he would want to work with his son and be with his son.”

“Frankly, the last thing I wanted to do at that moment was prevent any parent and any child, any son, from being together as I was sitting on a park bench, Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where my mom was sleeping inside recovering from a major operation.”

“Later that week, we had Rampage live in Daily’s Place in Jacksonville and I sat with Regal for over 90 minutes in my office afterward. This was probably the longest in-person talk I ever had with him. We talked and I told him I’ll make major sacrifices to this company to do the best thing for you and your family because this is a family-first company. The person I’m releasing later this month, who is still with us through the holidays, has been an essential part of multiple TV stories and is still an essential part of the TV as of tonight and we’ve done a lot of things to help him create the best situation he can for his family. For me, my mom is doing really well and we’re really grateful.”

“I probably won’t be able to facilitate every family reunion but I do try to make this a family-first company and especially in this situation, that’s what we’ve done.”

Report: William Regal finalizing WWE deal, expected to start after new year

William Regal will reportedly start back with WWE in early 2023.

According to a report from PWInsider, Regal is currently finalizing a new deal with WWE and is expected to return to the promotion after the new year in a backstage role.

Regal’s situation was addressed by our own Dave Meltzer on Saturday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer noted that there should be something on AEW Dynamite this week that addresses Regal’s departure.

“I believe that there is something that’s going to be on Wednesday’s show, if it doesn’t change, where there will be something addressing certain things. That story is supposed to keep going in some way but [Regal] is going back to WWE.”

Meltzer would continue to say he’s heard multiple stories regarding Regal’s contractual status with AEW.

“I’ve had so many different people tell me so many different stories. The primary source story is that his contract was short-term. The WWE side says that he had an out.”

Regal made his AEW debut at Revolution on March 6, 2022.

“Does he sign a nine-month deal? It doesn’t sound right but that’s the closest thing to what I would say is official,” Meltzer continued. “Others say that he had an out or Tony gave him an out.”

Speculation continues regarding William Regal’s future in AEW

One of wrestling’s most interesting — and unanswered — stories currently is the future of William Regal.

In recent days, there has been speculation that Regal is returning to WWE in some kind of backstage/executive role given his past connection to WWE’s Paul “Triple H” Levesque. That speculation caught social media fire after Levesque tweeted a montage of Regal saying “WarGames” on Saturday during Survivor Series:

At this point, Regal is believed to still be under AEW contract but the length of the deal is the main question which neither Regal or AEW’s Tony Khan have publicly commented on.

In discussing the rumors Monday, our Dave Meltzer said Regal had said he had signed a three-year deal with AEW but that “something was going on.” He also said there was some off-the-record information that he was given which he was not allowed to discuss.

Meltzer didn’t have any new information on Wednesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio following an AEW Dynamite that saw MJF take Regal out following the new AEW World Champion’s in-ring promo. Regal was bloodied up in the mouth, stretchered out, and taken away in an ambulance which some took to mean he was being written off in storyline.

On Thursday, Fightful reported that talent believe Regal’s contract could be up this month — a topic speculated about during this past weekend’s WrestleCade event.

After 22 years in the company, Regal was released by WWE in January and debuted for AEW at March’s Revolution, eventually starting the Blackpool Combat Club. He turned on Jon Moxley at this month’s Full Gear which led to MJF winning the title and on last week’s Dynamite, Moxley confronted him and told him to leave.

While MJF gave the background for when Regal aligned with him during the aforementioned promo, there was still no explanation from Regal as to why he decided to turn on Moxley.

The 54-year-old Regal was a mainstay in WWE NXT for the better part of the last decade and had been the company’s director of talent development and head of global recruiting during his time with WWE.

MJF unveils ‘Triple B’ version of AEW World title, knocks out William Regal

There’s a new version of the AEW World title and it belongs to MJF who will now again walk alone after he laid out the man that helped him win it in a surprise move.

For the first time since winning the title at this month’s Full Gear, the new World Champion spoke on Wednesday’s Dynamite and was accompanied by Regal.

After speaking for a while, he said the current version of the title was tacky, lacked class, and reminded him of all the men that held it before. He called it garbage and dumped it outside the ring before he and Regal unveiled the “Triple B” version of the title: the Big Burberry Belt, seen above.

MJF continued to speak, saying that he is now in the special attraction category of wrestlers and that fans should get used to reaching into their pockets to watch him defend the title on pay-per-views.

He again alluded to “the bidding war of 2024” and made references to WWE’s Nick Khan and Paul “Triple” H Levesque while also saying Hollywood could be the biggest bidder of them all. He later name-dropped Hulk Hogan, Jeff Jarrett and JBL in saying his title reign would be longer than theirs and that he was about to have a reign “that will make Bruno Sammartino roll around in his sh*tty little grave.”

Earlier in the promo, he referenced how he aligned with Regal, saying Regal sent him an email after The Firm attacked MJF where Regal suggested MJF not reach for the diamond ring but a brass ring instead (aka the brass knucks he slid to MJF that night). MJF said the two met behind closed doors frequently following the email and that Regal was a genius, wanting Jon Moxley to not just leave without his title at Full Gear but also with an emotional scar.

To close the promo, MJF walked behind Regal and began to say “From the bottom of my heart,” before hitting Regal from behind in the back of the head which commentary sold as a serious neck injury as Regal lay on his face motionless.

MJF ran down Regal again, referencing a deal with the devil before walking through the crowd to the back.

EMTs, doctors and Bryan Danielson tended to Regal in the ring, taking him away on a stretcher. After the break, they showed him being taken away in an ambulance.

There was been recent discussion regarding Regal’s contract status with AEW, raising speculation this was a way to close his chapter with the company.

William Regal segment announced for AEW Dynamite

This week’s Dynamite may provide an explanation for why William Regal turned against Jon Moxley.

AEW has announced that we’ll hear from Regal on Dynamite this Wednesday night. It will be the first time Regal has spoken publicly since helping MJF win the AEW World Championship from Moxley in the main event of Full Gear.

MJF pinned Moxley at Full Gear after Regal gave him brass knuckles to use as a weapon. Regal, who has been the manager of Blackpool Combat Club, had accompanied Moxley to the ring for the match.

Dave Meltzer reported that the finish of the Full Gear main event was Tony Khan’s idea:

The main event finish with William Regal handing MJF Brass Knux was Tony Khan’s idea and you can look back at the last several weeks of the build-up and see the signs leading to it. It appears from the press conference that MJF and Regal will be a heel champion pairing not unlike Kenny Omega and Don Callis.

This Wednesday’s Thanksgiving Eve episode of Dynamite is being held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Here’s what’s been announced for the episode:

  • ROH World Champion Chris Jericho defends against Tomohiro Ishii
  • AEW World title eliminator tournament finals: Ethan Page vs. Ricky Starks
  • AEW All-Atlantic Champion Orange Cassidy defends against Jake Hager
  • Match two in Death Triangle and The Elite’s best-of-seven series for the AEW Trios titles
  • We’ll hear from William Regal
