AEW’s Toni Storm wants to beat Thunder Rosa, end interim title ‘nonsense’

The build toward a title unification match between AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa and interim champion Toni Storm has begun.

In an interview with Bleacher Report posted Monday, Storm brought up Rosa when asked what is next for her.

“I guess my first thing would be to beat Thunder Rosa and stop this interim nonsense. That’s kind of what’s been bothering me. I think that’s been bothering a lot of people because she’s still calling herself the AEW Women’s world champion and I’m the one here every week doing the work,” she said.

Storm won the interim title at September’s All Out in a four-way after Rosa pulled herself off the card due to a severe back injury. Storm has defended the title three times since then and will look for a fourth Tuesday when she defends against former champion Hikaru Shida in a first time ever singles matchup.

Rosa has been out of action since August and initially had to defend herself from speculation that the injury was a work to get out of defending against Storm at All Out. She initially thought she would be out of action for “a few months” but it’s unknown when her return is targeted for.

After winning the title, Storm said in the post-event press conference that the interim tag was “not ideal. But Thunder Rosa says she’s injured. Okay. So when she says she’s not injured, she can come back and lose to me, and that will be the end of that.”

Kamille replacing Thunder Rosa at AAA Triplemania: Mexico City

Due to injury, Thunder Rosa is officially off Triplemania XXX: Mexico City.

Rosa was scheduled to challenge Taya Valkyrie for the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship at the Triplemania event. Lucha Libre AAA posted a video on Friday night setting up that Kamille will instead face Valkyrie for the title in Mexico City.

Kamille cut a promo saying she’s heard that Valkyrie is looking for someone new to face at Triplemania because “apparently your last opponent got hurt.” Kamille said she’s here to answer that call.

Kamille has been NWA World Women’s Champion for more than a year. She retained that title against Valkyrie at night one of NWA 74 this August.

On AEW Dynamite last month, Rosa announced that she wouldn’t be able to compete at All Out due to injury. Rosa still holds the AEW Women’s World Championship, but Toni Storm has been crowned interim champion while Rosa is out of action. Storm was supposed to challenge Rosa for the title at All Out. She instead defeated Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida, and Jamie Hayter in a four-way match at the pay-per-view to become interim champion.

Rosa told Busted Open Radio that she expects to be out of action for a couple of months due to the back injury. She also responded to people who have claimed she’s faking the injury.

“This is not fake, not a work. If I can f**king work, I can f**king work,” Rosa said.

“I’m sorry, guys. I want to walk when I’m 40, I want to have kids…I have the right to say, ‘No, I can’t walk, I can’t do it.’ I don’t want to have surgery (and be out longer).”

Triplemania: Mexico City is taking place on Saturday, October 15. It’s the last of three Triplemania PPVs this year celebrating the 30th edition of the event.

AEW’s Toni Storm: ‘Thunder Rosa says she’s injured’

New interim AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm has commented on Thunder Rosa’s back injury.

Speaking at the post-All Out media scrum, Storm said that her interim tag is “not ideal” and that Rosa “can come back and lose to me” after she heals.

Storm said:

“I mean, it’s not ideal. But Thunder Rosa says she’s injured. Okay. So when she say’s she’s not injured, she can come back and lose to me, and that will be the end of that.”

Taken at face value, Storm’s comments feed into the perception that Rosa’s injury may not be legitimate, although Rosa will reportedly be out of action for “a few months” and adamant that her injury is not “fake.” AEW’s media scrums are often a mix of worked and shoot comments, so Storm’s remarks could also simply be building a storyline for their match when Rosa returns.

Storm also spoke about her decision to leave WWE at the end of 2021, saying that she chose to take a leap of faith and bet on herself:

“I found myself in a very strange predicament where I had to take a leap of faith, because I couldn’t continue going on the way things were. So I just had to bet on myself, and it paid off.”

Storm’s full comments can be seen below.

AEW’s Thunder Rosa says back injury ‘not fake, not a work,’ out for a few months

During an appearance on Busted Open Radio Friday, AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa said she will likely be out a couple months due to her back injury and that the injury isn’t fake.

Rosa said she is currently in bed and in a lot of pain. Her doctor wouldn’t clear her to wrestle as she can’t feel her legs and that the injury has been a growing problem for roughly a year.

She learned the news Tuesday and the gravity of the announcement hit her on Wednesday.

Rosa also addressed some of the allegations that emerged following her Wednesday promo where she said she would miss All Out due to the injury.

“This is not fake, not a work. If I can f**king work, I can f**king work,” she said.

“I’m sorry, guys. I want to walk when I’m 40, I want to have kids…I have the right to say, ‘No, I can’t walk, I can’t do it.’ I don’t want to have surgery (and be out longer),” she said.

Rosa said she has respect for all the women in the AEW locker room and that she has taken both feedback and accountability for any issues in the past.

“If anyone has a problem with me, anyone, call Busted Open, call my number, you can tell me to my face. I don’t hide from problems, I don’t run from my problems. You can talk to me. My door is open,” she said.

AEW’s Thunder Rosa reportedly dealing with back injury

A night after she revealed she could not compete at AEW All Out due to an injury, more details have emerged as relates to what AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa is currently working through.

PWInsider reported that Rosa is dealing with a disc issue in her back — a problem she has been trying to work through lately. There’s no timeframe for her return.

AEW will create an interim Women’s title that will be decided at All Out with former champions Britt Baker and HIkaru Shida plus Toni Storm and Jamie Hayter competing in a four-way. Storm was to challenge Rosa in a rematch.

Following Rosa’s admission, rumors started swirling on social media that the injury was a ruse and a ploy to not lose the title. While Dave Meltzer didn’t confirm the injury or lack thereof, he said on Wrestling Observer Radio that a title change was scheduled for the pay-per-view.

While Rosa didn’t address any rumors or speak specifically about the injury, she did tweet a thanks to her fans and the wrestling community on Thursday.

AEW notes: ‘Multiple people’ contacted by WWE, Thunder Rosa, Omega promo

On the post-AEW Dynamite edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer had some notes on the Wednesday talent meeting, Thunder Rosa’s injury and the angle between Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega.

“Multiple people contacted by WWE”

In talking about meeting that featured Tony Khan, Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, the Young Bucks and others talking, Meltzer said it wasn’t just one contracted wrestler that was contacted by WWE but multiple people.

It was said during the meeting by Khan that AEW legal sent an email to WWE co-CEOs Nick Khan and Stephanie McMahon warning them not to tamper with any contracted talent.

Bryan Alvarez didn’t have a lot of other notes from the meeting other than saying that he understood that “the vast majority” of attendees came away feeling good about things while others did not.

Meltzer said the situation regarding Colt Cabana not being in AEW and Dark Order started the issues between Hangman Page and Punk, but nothing regarding that was discussed during the meeting.

He said while some believe Punk is the reason Cabana isn’t in Dark Order or AEW, Punk has told people that is not the case. He believes Cabana’s Ring of Honor deal pays him the same as his previous AEW deal did.

Thunder Rosa situation

On Wednesday, Thunder Rosa said she couldn’t defend the AEW Women’s title at All Out due to an injury and that a four-way for an interim title would happen instead.

That led to a groundswell of rumors on social media regarding whether an injury actually exists. While Meltzer didn’t confirm the injury, he said if Rosa was on All Out, she would have lost to Toni Storm as a change to the championship was coming.

Omega vs. Ospreay

At the end of Dynamite, The Elite had a staredown with United Empire a build to their Trios title tournament semifinal next Wednesday.

After the broadcast ended, Omega and Ospreay got into a war of words that made its way online:

Meltzer said the increased animosity between them on social media and the promo above is a storyline and always has been to build toward a big singles match at some point, likely either at a Wrestle Kingdom show or AEW pay-per-view.

Thunder Rosa to challenge for women’s title at AAA Triplemania: Mexico City

Thunder Rosa will be challenging for gold at Triplemania XXX: Mexico City.

At a press conference on Monday, Lucha Libre AAA announced that Rosa will challenge Taya Valkyrie for the Reina de Reinas Championship at Triplemania: Mexico City on Saturday, October 15. It’s the third of three Triplemania shows this year celebrating the 30th edition of the event.

Rosa’s AEW Women’s World Championship won’t be on the line in the match.

A promo from Rosa aired at the press conference. Rosa said she wants to bring the AAA Reina de Reinas title back to Mexican hands.

Luchablog notes that AAA explained the match as being “a Mexican who’s been successful outside of Mexico [Rosa] vs a foreigner who found their career by coming to Mexico [Valkyrie].”

Valkyrie has been Reina de Reinas Champion since winning the title from Deonna Purrazzo at Impact Wrestling’s Rebellion pay-per-view this April. This is Valkyrie’s fourth time holding the title.

It was also announced at Monday’s press conference that El Hijo del Vikingo will defend his AAA Mega Championship at Triplemania: Mexico City against an opponent who has yet to be determined. Lucha Libre AAA is asking fans to choose Vikingo’s challenger, with Kenny Omega, Rey Fenix, and Psycho Clown mentioned as possibilities.

Omega has been out of action since last November after taking time off to have several surgeries for nagging injuries. He’s hoping to return in time for AEW’s All Out PPV this September.

There will be another press conference for Triplemania: Mexico City next month. Here’s the full list of what’s been announced for the show thus far:

  • Hair vs. hair match: Pagano vs. Cibernetico
  • Copa Bardahl Triplemania

Thunder Rosa vs. Miyu Yamashita TJPW match to air on AEW Dark

Thunder Rosa vs. Miyu Yamashita will air on AEW Dark.

The match took place on Saturday, July 9 at TJPW Summer Sun Princess 22. If Yamashita wins she will be awarded with a title match for Rosa’s AEW Women’s World Championship. The match result is available here

A match between PAC and Shota Umino for the AEW All-Atlantic Championship will also air on Tuesday’s edition of Dark. The match took place on Sunday, July 10 at RevPro Live in Sheffield, England. It was PAC’s first defense of the new title.

Rosa vs. Yamashita and PAC vs. Umino are the only two matches announced for the show thus far.

AEW Dark airs on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m Eastern time on YouTube. The announced lineup is as follows:

  • AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa vs. Miyu Yamashita in a title-eliminator match (from Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling’s Summer Sun Princess 22)
  • AEW All-Atlantic Champion PAC defends against Shota Umino (from RevPro Live in Sheffield)

TJPW’s Miyu Yamashita earns future AEW Women’s World title shot

Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling’s Miyu Yamashita has earned a future shot at the AEW Women’s World Championship.

Yamashita put herself in line for a shot at the championship by defeating Thunder Rosa in a non-title match at TJPW’s Summer Sun Princess 2022 event on Saturday. Rosa said during the lead-up to the match that she would give Yamashita a title shot if Yamashita won.

A date for the title match hasn’t been set. During a post-match press conference, Rosa said Yamashita knows her schedule and knows where AEW goes. Rosa said Yamashita is more than welcome to come to her house whenever she’s in the United States:

Yamashita made her AEW debut on an episode of Dark: Elevation last month, teaming with Skye Blue in a loss to Nyla Rose & Serena Deeb.

Dave Meltzer reported two weeks ago that AEW was interested in doing a Rosa vs. Yamashita match on AEW television:

It is not a lock or anything, but there was definitely talk of Rosa vs. Yamashita on AEW television as well as in Japan. The key people [in AEW] were very impressed with Yamashita on the streaming shows. It is hard to explain why Yamashita with only a couple of matches and never having been on television would be getting a title shot logically, and it’s never a lock here until it’s announced.
