WWE Raw notes: CM Punk-Gunther promo, El Grande Americano, next week

Some news and notes from Monday’s SummerSlam go-home edition of WWE Raw:

CM Punk & Gunther promo —

CM Punk and Gunther engaged in a final war of words prior to their World Heavyweight Championship match set for night one of SummerSlam on Saturday.

Punk declared that he needs to win the title for himself and for the fans that chanted his name while he was away from WWE for nearly a decade:

Another new El Grande Americano —

Two El Grande Americanos interfered in the World Tag Team title bout on Raw.

One Americano (Ludwig Kaiser) jumped on the apron during the Judgment Day vs. LWO match to distract Cruz Del Toro of the LWO, but was dispatched by Dragon Lee.

With one threat neutralized, a second Americano (possibly Pete Dunne) pushed Del Toro off the top rope to allow Finn Balor and JD McDonagh to retain their titles.

Sheamus vs. Rusev 3 —

Sheamus and Rusev will have the third match in their ongoing rivalry on the Monday, August 4 Raw. Rusev won the first bout on the June 30 episode, then Sheamus won the rematch on the July 21 Raw.

On this week’s show, Sheamus defeated Grayson Waller after thwarting an interference attempt by Rusev. After the match, Rusev attacked Sheamus. Later in the show during a commercial break, Rusev issued a challenge for the rubber match on next week’s Raw, with the match being made official later in the program.

AAA notes: Match with WWE stars set for Triplemania 33

Notes from Friday’s AAA television show in Mexico City.

A Triplemania XXXIII match for the Mega Championship was set up on the show. Vikingo, who was booed, came out and issued an open challenge. Dragon Lee arrived to answer the challenge, then El Grande Americano. Lee and Vikingo took out Americano but suddenly another masked man entered the ring and took both of them out, revealing himself to be Dominik Mysterio. A four-way for the Mega Championship was then confirmed for Triplemania, which takes place on August 16.

El Grande Mexicano made his AAA debut earlier in the night, defeating Octagon Jr. in a match where he was cheered. After his win, he cut a promo declaring that he is Mexican, which brought more cheers from the crowd. He also sang the song ‘Cielito Lindo.’

In the main event, Alberto El Patron lost to Mesias in a match where if Alberto lost, he would have to leave AAA. The match was rife with interference, with Dorian Roldan, heel referee Hijo de Tirantes, and NGD freely interfering. Patron took out Roldan and NGD with a guitar but the distraction allowed Mesias to throw powder in Patron’s face then scored a fast count win, putting Patron out of the promotion, at least in storyline.

Latin Lover, who was sitting in the crowd, entered the ring as all the rudos celebrated. He and Patron, who had been feuding for the last year, shook hands and hugged to end the show.

AAA reveals opponent for El Grande Americano debut

El Grande Americano now has an opponent for his Lucha Libre AAA debut.

AAA has announced that Americano vs. Octagon Jr. will take place at the promotion’s event in Mexico City on Friday, July 25. The show is being held at Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium and is a taping for future episodes of AAA television that will be broadcast in Mexico.

Though the Americano character was originally introduced by WWE as another persona for Chad Gable, it is now Ludwig Kaiser who is performing under the mask. The switch was made after Gable suffered a shoulder injury and needed to undergo surgery. Kaiser has wrestled one match as Americano, defeating Dragon Lee on the July 7 episode of Raw.

Octagon Jr. wrestled at WWE & AAA’s Worlds Collide event last month and then made his official WWE debut at Money in the Bank later that night, losing to Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio.

WWE’s acquisition of AAA is in the process of being finalized with the deal expected to be completed at some point between now and the end of September.

El Grande Americano announced for Lucha Libre AAA event

El Grande Americano is heading down to Mexico to make his Lucha Libre AAA debut later this month.

AAA announced today that Americano, who is now being played by Ludwig Kaiser, will appear at the promotion’s TV taping in Mexico City on Friday, July 25. An opponent for him has not been named.

A supposedly prolific luchador with a rich history of success in Mexico, the Americano character was introduced into WWE storylines earlier this year as part of an angle where Chad Gable was attempting to conquer lucha libre. Though Gable was recently forced out of action with a shoulder injury that required surgery, Americano is sticking around with Kaiser donning the mask.

WWE revealed in April that it is in the process of acquiring Lucha Libre AAA. That deal is expected to be completed soon, with July-September given as the anticipated range of when it would be finalized.

This AAA TV taping is being held at Mexico City’s Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium. The event was originally scheduled for July 19 before AAA announced that it was being pushed back to July 25.

El Grande Americano to compete on WWE Raw

Though Chad Gable is out of action with an injury, El Grande Americano is still set to compete on WWE Raw tonight.

WWE has announced that Americano will wrestle on Raw against an unnamed opponent. Last week, Ludwig Kaiser briefly portrayed the character in a backstage segment — so it looks like that could continue on tonight’s show.

Gable underwent surgery last week to repair a shoulder injury. A timeline for his return to the ring has not been established, but Gable wrote that he’ll be back ““quicker than you can say GRACIAS!”

Americano is the current WWE Speed Champion. The character continuing despite Gable’s injury would appear to indicate that the Speed title will not be vacated.

Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island is the venue for Raw tonight. Here is everything that’s been announced:

WWE Raw (Monday, July 7) —

  • Seth Rollins vs. Penta
  • Women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch appears
  • Roxanne Perez vs. Kairi Sane
  • Sami Zayn vs. Bron Breakker
  • Jey Uso vs. Bronson Reed
  • El Grande Americano in action

El Grande Americano retains WWE Speed title in first defense

El Grande Americano is still WWE Speed Champion after making his first defense of his belt.

Though he needed to cheat to win, Americano (Chad Gable) prevailed over Berto in a title defense on this week’s WWE Speed episode. Berto was going for a cradle when Americano was able to counter and deliver a headbutt with a weapon loaded into his facemask. He then pinned Berto with 1:16 remaining of the five-minute time limit.

Americano, a supposed legendary luchador with a rich history of success in Mexico, became Speed Champion this May by defeating Dragon Lee. There have been four champions since the title was introduced in 2024: Ricochet, Andrade, Lee, and Americano.

The Americano vs. Berto match was taped last night at the WWE Performance Center.

He failed to capture gold here, but Berto did become a champion at Triplemania Regia on Sunday, winning the AAA Tag Team titles with his cousin Angel.

A new tournament starts on Speed next Wednesday to find a challenger for Women’s Speed Champion Sol Ruca. It will feature the following first-round matchups:

  • B-Fab vs. Alba Fyre
  • Thea Hail vs. Nikkita Lyons

WWE crowns new number one contender to Speed Championship

Legado del Fantasma member Berto is first in line to challenge El Grande Americano for the WWE Speed Championship.

On a new episode of Speed that premiered today, Berto defeated Noam Dar in the finals of a number one contender’s tournament. The two went back and forth in an evenly contested match until Berto was able to hit a flying kick and land a sit-out powerbomb, pinning Dar with 26 seconds remaining on the three-minute clock.

El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) vs. Berto for the WWE Speed Championship will air on X/Twitter at noon Eastern time next Wednesday. It’s the first title defense for Americano since he defeated Dragon Lee for the belt.

The title match will continue Gable’s ongoing feud with the luchadors of WWE. In a post-match promo after securing the title shot, Berto called El Grande Americano a disgrace to lucha culture and said he’ll prove next week that Americano is nothing.

Legado del Fantasma (Santos Escobar, Angel & Berto) were victorious at Worlds Collide last weekend, defeating the Lucha Libre AAA team of Psycho Clown, Pagano & El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. in a trios match.

This coming Sunday, Angel & Berto will be in action in Mexico when they compete in a four-way tag match for the AAA Tag Team titles at Triplemania Regia. It will be Sanson & Forastero defending the belts against Angel & Berto, Psycho Clown & Pagano, and Nic & Ryan Nemeth.

El Grande Americano defeats Dragon Lee for WWE Speed title

El Grande Americano — the loosely disguised alter ego of Chad Gable — now holds WWE gold.

Americano is the new WWE Speed Champion after defeating Dragon Lee for the belt. The title change was taped at Raw earlier this week and aired on Speed today. Lee had the advantage until he tried to rip off Americano’s mask. When the referee stopped Lee, that gave Americano an opportunity to load his mask up with a weapon. Lee kicked Americano in the face but hurt his own leg against the loaded mask. Americano then connected with a diving headbutt off the top rope for the victory.

With the victory, Americano becomes the fourth men’s WWE Speed Champion in history. Ricochet, Andrade, and Dragon Lee are the prior champs.

Gable adopted this gimmick as part of his quest to conquer lucha libre following a loss to Penta. The Americano character is a self-proclaimed lucha libre legend who supposedly has a rich history of success in Mexico.

WWE Speed shifts its focus back to the women’s division this Friday as the tournament to crown a new number one contender begins. The tournament winner will get the first shot at new WWE Speed Women’s Champion Sol Ruca.

Here are the first-round matchups:

  • Kelani Jordan vs. Wren Sinclair
  • Maxxine Dupri vs. Ivy Nile

El Grande Americano to challenge for WWE Speed title

Chad Gable is getting another shot at the WWE Speed Championship — but this time he’ll be challenging for the belt as El Grande Americano.

Americano was confirmed as Dragon Lee’s next challenger by picking up a victory over Alex Shelley on this week’s WWE Speed episode. A loaded face mask helped Americano win the number one contender’s tournament final. With 39 seconds remaining of the three-minute time limit, Americano secured the three count with a diving headbutt to Shelley.

The Dragon Lee vs. Americano title match will air on Speed next Wednesday (May 7), premiering on X/Twitter at noon Eastern time. It’s the second time that Gable has challenged Lee for the belt. Their first match was broadcast in February with Lee retaining.

Following reigns by Ricochet and Andrade, Lee became WWE Speed Champion in November 2024 and has made two successful title defenses with wins over Gable and Ivar.

WWE introduced the El Grande Americano character — a supposed “legendary luchador” — as part of a storyline where Gable is looking to conquer lucha libre after losing to Penta. Americano is coming off a victory against Rey Fenix at WrestleMania 41.

El Grande Americano advances in WWE Speed tournament

El Grande Americano — the supposed lucha legend played by Chad Gable — is advancing to the next round of WWE Speed’s number one contender’s tournament.

The masked Americano defeated Erik in a first-round match on WWE Speed this week, getting the victory with a diving headbutt with 42 seconds remaining on the three-minute clock. The match was taped at WWE Raw in Sacramento on April 14 before premiering today.

It will be Americano vs. Alex Shelley in the next round of the tournament (airing April 30 on X/Twitter) with the winner earning a WWE Speed Championship shot against Dragon Lee, who won the title in November 2024 and has made two successful defenses during his reign. One of those defenses was against Gable.

WWE introduced the Americano character in a storyline where Gable is looking to conquer lucha libre following a loss to Penta. His first match under the Americano mask was a win against Lee this March.

Americano is coming off a victory against Rey Fenix at WrestleMania 41. Rey Mysterio was originally supposed to be his opponent, but Mysterio suffered a torn groin on the SmackDown before WrestleMania and could not compete. To defeat Fenix, Americano used a loaded mask as a weapon.

Rey Fenix replacing Rey Mysterio in WWE WrestleMania 41 match

Rey Mysterio is out of WrestleMania 41.

During the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, Rey Mysterio announced that he was injured during his match on SmackDown Friday and as a result, was not medically cleared to compete at WrestleMania. Mysterio then revealed that Rey Fenix would be replacing him in his match against El Grande Americano.

Mysterio teamed with Fenix and Dragon Lee on SmackDown to take on Chad Gable and American Made. During the middle of the match, Julius Creed grabbed Mysterio, injuring him. Fenix and Dragon Lee worked the rest of the match, with Fenix scoring the win for his team.

Dave Meltzer has reported that Mysterio suffered a torn groin.

Mysterio appeared on the pre-show as WWE officially announced that they had purchased AAA, with a Worlds Collide joint show with WWE, NXT, and AAA talent scheduled for June 7 at the Kia Forum.

Here is the updated lineup for WrestleMania 41:

WWE WrestleMania 41 —

Rey Mysterio vs. El Grande Americano added to WWE WrestleMania 41

El Grande Americano will make his WrestleMania debut against Rey Mysterio.

The new match for WrestleMania 41 was announced during Monday’s Raw following a six-man tag team match. Americano, Brutus Creed, and Julius Creed defeated Mysterio’s LWO teammates Dragon Lee, Joaquin Wilde, and Cruz Del Toro on Raw.

Americano used a steel plate in his mask to hit headbutts on Mysterio, who was ringside for the contest, and Lee, leading to the win for American Made.

Later, Mysterio demanded a WrestleMania match against Americano, with Raw GM Adam Pearce agreeing to the contest.
