Kevin Nash ‘would not have gotten rid of Motor City Machine Guns, that’s for damn sure’

Kevin Nash wasn’t a fan of WWE’s decision to release the Motor City Machine Guns.

During the Q&A portion of his latest Kliq This podcast, Nash reacted to the round of roster cuts that WWE made on April 24. The WWE Hall of Famer said he was surprised to see Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin let go and would not have made the same decision if it were up to him.

“I would not have gotten rid of the Motor City Machine Guns, that’s for damn sure,” Nash said.

Nash worked with Motor City Machine Guns in TNA and had strong on-screen chemistry with Shelley when they were in Paparazzi Productions together. Nash was also a mentor to Shelley behind the scenes during this time, with Nash, Shelley, and Sabin all being from the state of Michigan.

Shelley & Sabin had a nearly two-year run with WWE that included one Tag Team title reign on SmackDown. There is an expectation that they’ll be heading to AEW once free to sign elsewhere.

When asked if he was surprised by the releases in general, Nash said he wasn’t after he saw how high the compensation is for TKO’s executives. Nash joked about Nick Khan’s salary but said he believes Khan has earned it given how much money Khan generates for WWE.

“Not after like two weeks prior when I see what the CEOs [are making]. What Nick’s getting paid. I mean, Nick took f***ing half of the WrestleMania net [laughs],” Nash said. “But I’m busting his balls because we sat here and went over the numbers and the year before was 1.4 billion. The next year, you’re 1.7 billion. So that’s 300 million.”

Khan — WWE’s President — received $24.3 million in compensation for the year 2025. His base salary was $2 million, and Khan received $11 million in stock awards and more than $10 million in bonuses.

Nash appeared for WWE last month when he helped induct NBA legend Dennis Rodman into the Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 42 weekend. Though he understands that business takes precedence, Nash described the whole weekend as feeling “kind of soulless” with how TKO handles things.

Kairi Sane, Aleister Black, Motor City Machine Guns reportedly among WWE cuts

The WWE continues to cut multiple names from its roster. News of the departures of Zoey Stark and Alba Fyre, among others, broke earlier today. Now more cuts have been identified this evening, including Aleister Black and the Motor City Machine Guns.

The latest batch of cuts was initially reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com.

Black had initially joined WWE as a member of NXT in 2016. He was called up to the main roster in 2019, but he was released in June of 2021. He spent several years in AEW in the House of Black with Brody King and Buddy Matthews before returning to WWE last April. (The initial vignette teasing his return aired one year ago this weekend.) After pairing with his real-life wife Zelina Vega, he was involved with Randy Orton’s build to WrestleMania, but was pulled from the program to make room for Pat McAfee.

Vega is also among those reportedly released.

The Motor City Machine Guns—Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin—had been teaming for over 15 years, mostly in TNA, before finally joining WWE in 2024. They won a pair of tournaments to name top contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championships, and finally defeated Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa to win those belts in October of 2024. They lost the belts to #DIY in December of that same year.

Other names on WWE’s cut list, according to Sapp:

  • Former WWE US and Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews.
  • Former NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar.
  • Tyra Mae Steele, who won a gold medal in wrestling in the 2020 Olympic Games under her real name, Tamyra Mensah-Stock.
  • Three-time former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Kairi Sane
  • Developmental prospects Malik Blade, Dante Chen, Luca Crusifino, Tyson Dupont, Chris Island, Tyriek Igwe, Sirena Linton, and Trill London.

Trey Miguel: Alex Shelley is the ‘single-handed reason’ I still wrestle

Trey Miguel says he would not still be wrestling if it wasn’t for Alex Shelley.

During a recent interview with Mr. KnowYourWrestling, Miguel said he opened up to Shelley about wanting to quit, but Shelley convinced him to be “undeniable.”

Miguel said:

“Alex Shelley is the absolute single-handed reason why I’m still doing this today. I opened up to him about being depressed and having anxiety and wanting to quit and feeling like I wasn’t meant to do this, feeling like wrestling hated me and all I did was love it.

“He took me from a place of wanting to quit to a place of wanting to prove myself wrong and be undeniable.”

Miguel was released from his AEW contract last month not long after signing with the company, and before he had a chance to debut alongside the other members of The Rascalz. His release was said to be due to insensitive social media posts from 2020.

Miguel later returned to TNA Wrestling on the January 22 episode of Impact on AMC, taking part in the Feast or Fired Ladder match and winning a briefcase that was later revealed to contain a contract for an International Championship title shot.

A clip from Miguel’s interview is available below.

Tag team match announced for WWE SmackDown

Update —

JC Mateo & Talla Tonga will be the two members of Solo Sikoa’s Family Tree facing Motor City Machine Guns tonight.

**********

WWE has confirmed a tag team bout for tonight’s SummerSlam fallout edition of SmackDown.

The SmackDown roster is in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with the Bell Centre hosting tonight’s show. It was announced this afternoon that Motor City Machine Guns will face off against Solo Sikoa’s Family Tree on the show. WWE didn’t specify which two of Tonga Loa, JC Mateo, and Talla Tonga will be competing in the match.

Motor City Machine Guns are coming off a six-pack TLC match at SummerSlam, where The Wyatt Sicks prevailed to retain the WWE Tag Team titles. Sikoa retained his United States Championship belt over Jacob Fatu at the PLE, but the Family Tree didn’t get out unscathed as Jimmy Uso helped Fatu stand tall over Tonga Loa and Mateo.

This is the first match announced for tonight, but appearances by Cody Rhodes and John Cena are also scheduled. Rhodes defeated Cena at SummerSlam to become the new WWE Champion. After the conclusion of the title match, Brock Lesnar reemerged following a two-year absence and beat down Cena.

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis hyped that Cena has requested time tonight to address Lesnar’s attack. Cena’s appearance will be kicking off the show.

WWE SmackDown (Friday, August 8) —

  • New WWE Champion Cody Rhodes appears
  • John Cena kicks off SmackDown, will address Brock Lesnar’s attack
  • Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) vs. JC Mateo & Talla Tonga

El Grande Americano to challenge for WWE Speed title

Chad Gable is getting another shot at the WWE Speed Championship — but this time he’ll be challenging for the belt as El Grande Americano.

Americano was confirmed as Dragon Lee’s next challenger by picking up a victory over Alex Shelley on this week’s WWE Speed episode. A loaded face mask helped Americano win the number one contender’s tournament final. With 39 seconds remaining of the three-minute time limit, Americano secured the three count with a diving headbutt to Shelley.

The Dragon Lee vs. Americano title match will air on Speed next Wednesday (May 7), premiering on X/Twitter at noon Eastern time. It’s the second time that Gable has challenged Lee for the belt. Their first match was broadcast in February with Lee retaining.

Following reigns by Ricochet and Andrade, Lee became WWE Speed Champion in November 2024 and has made two successful title defenses with wins over Gable and Ivar.

WWE introduced the El Grande Americano character — a supposed “legendary luchador” — as part of a storyline where Gable is looking to conquer lucha libre after losing to Penta. Americano is coming off a victory against Rey Fenix at WrestleMania 41.

WWE SmackDown live results: Women’s Tag Team title match

The WWE Women’s Tag Team titles will be on the line on WWE SmackDown tonight, taped last week in Hartford, Connecticut.

With Jade Cargill out due to an injury, Bianca Belair will now team with Naomi to defend the titles against reigning WWE Women’s Champion Nia Jax and Candice LeRae. Naomi filling in for Cargill was approved last week by general manager Nick Aldis.

Johnny Gargano, one half of WWE Tag Team Champions #DIY, will go one-on-one with Alex Shelley, part of former champs the Motor City Machine Guns. It will be their first singles match since 2016.

The show is expected to feature the fallout from last weekend’s Saturday Night’s Main Event when undisputed WWE World Champion Cody Rhodes defeated Kevin Owens and then was taken out with a package piledriver after the broadcast ended.

The new Bloodline are also expected to make their presence felt tonight in addition to a surprise rematch from a recent SmackDown bout.

**********

– A video recap of Saturday Night’s Main Event opened the show.

– Bianca Belair and Naomi were shown walking backstage. Ditto for Nia Jax, Candice LeRae, Motor City Machine Guns and #DIY. Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline then made their entrance.

The Bloodline segment

I really like the Drew McIntyre wrinkle here. Between him and Kevin Owens, the modern day Paul Levesque heel is one that actually appears to be smarter than everyone around them and is simply sick and tired of being sick and tired. Who can’t relate to that? As such, it’s hard not to at least empathize with people like McIntyre and Owens, which isn’t historically what a heel should be … but hell: Welcome to the Triple H Era. Anyway, a strong verbal exchange to open the show. Sikoa has improved so much on the mic between when he started leading his version of the Bloodline and the current day.

Sikoa stood in the ring and told SmackDown to acknowledge him. Everyone booed and chanted “OTC!” Sikoa said Roman Reigns sat on his boat and challenged Sikoa to a Tribal Combat match and the crowd gave Sikoa the “What?” treatment. Sikoa stopped and said instead of saying “What?” they need to acknowledge him. The crowd went back to booing and chanting “OTC!” Sikoa proceeded to accept Reigns’s challenge for the Jan. 6 Raw on Netflix. Sikoa said he will walk out as the Tribal Chief and the Head Of The Table. Sikoa looked into the camera and told Reigns that after Jan. 6, Roman could hop back on his boat and head back to the island of irrelevancy.

Drew McIntyre’s music hit and McIntyre slowly walked out of the entranceway. McIntyre took his time getting into the ring. McIntyre grabbed a microphone and stared at Sikoa. Sikoa said he was really happy when McIntyre kicked Jimmy in the face last week. Sikoa then said Drew better have a damn good reason for why he’s interrupting him. McIntyre said he wanted to beat Sikoa within an inch of his life. McIntyre wondered if Sikoa ever wondered when Drew would come for him. McIntyre noted how Sikoa cost McIntyre the world title at Clash At The Castle and caused his family pain and misery.

However, McIntyre said that Sikoa was the only one in his family who had the balls to stand up to Roman Reigns. McIntyre wondered what he should do. McIntyre told Sikoa needs to take Roman Reigns out for good. After Sikoa does that, McIntyre said he and Sikoa could finish their business. Jimmy Uso appeared with a crutch and attacked McIntyre out of nowhere. Those two fought into the crowd and LA Knight’s music hit. Apollo Crews, Andrade and Knight ran to the ring and attacked Sikoa, Fatu and Tonga. The show then went to a commercial break.

The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga & Jacob Fatu) defeated LA Knight, Andrade & Apollo Crews [16:39 of TV time]

Goodness, gracious. A SNME video package and all Bloodline business took up the first 35 minutes of the episode. And I don’t even think we saw the full match as there was some questionable editing that popped up here. I wonder how this played with the (presumably) tired live crowd last week. Now for the real question: Is it time to wonder who LA Knight pissed off yet? The guy somehow gets over, stays over for at least a couple years, finally gets a title run, loses that title a few months later, and is now … teaming with Andrade and Apollo Crews to lose to Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline? That a bit suspect. Anyway, the match here kind of dragged (even with the editing), but it got the job done in terms of getting Sikoa a win before heading into his showdown with Reigns in a couple weeks on Raw. Fatu felt less dominant here, which was a tiny bit disappointing. Maybe an off night? Maybe a conscious booking decision? Here’s hoping for a bounce back soon.

The match was joined in progress and Crews was working over Tonga, complete with a press slam. Knight tagged in and hit a swinging beck-breaker on Tonga. Andrade tagged in and chopped Tonga. Crews then tagged back in and the two hit back elbows on Tonga for a two-count. Andrade tagged back in and kicked Tonga, but Tonga fought back a little until Andrade took Tonga down and Fatu ended up on the outside with Tonga. Crews tagged in and the two landed dual splashes on Fatu and Tonga. Knight went to the top rope and taunted Sikoa, who stayed away from the scene.

Back inside the ring, Crews attempted to keep the upper hand, but Tonga tagged in Fatu and Tafu took Crews out with a leaping elbow. The show then went to a commercial break. The show returned and Sikoa had control over Crews. Fatu tagged in and bodyslammed Crews. Fatu went for a running splash, but Crews got his knees up and and tagged in Andrade, who came in and took out Fatu. Andrade hit a Meteora on Fatu for a two-count. Andrade went to the top and landed the miss-then-not-miss a moonsault spot for a two-count.

Sikoa tagged in and Fatu fired up, lifting Andrade for a scary-looking spot as Sikoa helped Andrade over the top rope. At some point, Fatu tagged back in, but the program showed a replay of the scary spot, so nobody saw it. In any case, Fatu hit a pop-up Samoan Drop on Andrade inside the ring as the show went to another commercial break. The program returned and Fatu kept his dominance up over Andrade until Fatu went for a hip attack in a corner and Andrade moved. Ultimately, Andrade got the hot tag to Knight, who ran in and stomped on Tonga.

Knight clotheslined Fatu and hit a running knee on Tonga. Sikoa got involved, but Knight hit a neck-breaker on him. Crews tagged in and landed a splash from the top rope for a two-count on Tonga. Out of nowhere, Nakamura showed up and took Knight out while Crews worked a Crossface on Tonga. Sikoa broke that up and things broke down. Sikoa officially tagged in after dragging Tonga to their corner. Sikoa hit a hip attack, Spinning Solo and a Samoan Spike on Crews to get the win.

– MCMG were interviewed backstage by Byron Saxton. Alex Shelley said he had one thought – payback. Chris Sabin chimed in and noted how Gargano showed them who he truly is. Shelley said he was going to make sure Gargano knows he made the biggest mistake of his life. Sabin looked like he was going to accompany Shelley to the ring, but Shelley told Sabin to hang back for the match.

– A video package chronicling Chelsea Green’s win on SNME aired. After that, Green was interviewed by Saxton after SNME on Saturday night. Green said she always knew she’d win and she’s worked her entire life to be an overnight success. Green said it was “red, white and green.” Saxton talked about the historical significance of the win. Green said she is in the history books, where she belongs. Green brought up being released be WWE and being passed up by WWE in the past. Green said she was going to go to Disney World to celebrate.

– Graves threw to a video package chronicling the Kevin Owens/Cody Rhodes developments from SNME.

– Owens was shown in a dark place somewhere in a building. He said what happened after SNME was not his fault. Owens said there were a lot of people to blame for it and he was screwed out of winning the championship. Owens said what happened to him was a tragedy and travesty. Owens said he should be standing there the Undisputed WWE Champion, but he’s not. Instead, he took Cody’s belt and he’s not going to give it back until he gets what he wants. Owens said he hasn’t snapped yet and it can all get a lot worse. Owens said nobody wants him to snap. Owens said what happens next is on WWE officials including Nick Aldis and Triple H.

– Gargano and Ciampa were talking backstage. Ciampa said it surprised him that Shelley is dumb because MCMG can’t win the tag titles back in a singles match. Gargano said Shelley wants his revenge and Ciampa needs to stay in the back for his match against Shelley. Ciampa told Gargano to “go get him” and said he wouldn’t move a muscle.

The Grayson Waller Effect with Braun Strowman

Close your eyes. Picture this segment. Whatever you see or whatever you think you’d see – that’s exactly what it was.

Waller welcomed everyone in and Theory made his presence known as well. Waller said his guest is the first transfer to Friday nights on SmackDown: Braun Strowman, who walked out dressed as Santa Claus. Stowman threw gifts into the crowd on his way to the ring. Once in the ring, Strowman faked going to give Waller a gift, but instead, he didn’t. Waller said Strowman helped “all the poor people in Hartford,” and Strowman responded in anger before sitting down.

Waller talked about how he invested a lot of money into his new talkshow set. Waller said he was surprised Strowman would come on the show, but the more he thought about it, the more it made sense because he realized how much he’d want to be around A-Town Down Under. Strowman appeared agitated. Waller offered up the ultimate alliance – Strowman and A-Town Down. Strowman slammed his hand on the GWE desk and Carmelo Hayes’s music hit. Melo walked out with a microphone.

Melo said everyone knows his match against Strowman last week wasn’t fair. Melo said nobody can humble greatness and told Strowman he wanted to run it back “right here, right now.” Strowman said he’s show Melo what The Braun Effect is. Strowman threw some fake palm trees at Melo and a referee walked to the ring for a presumed match between Strowman and Melo – after a commercial break.

**********

Carmelo Hayes defeated Braun Strowman via count out [3:32]

Eh. I can’t say I’m a fan. Melo just can’t help but find himself in series of matches against people. At the very least, this will be a best of three with Strowman, but who knows – maybe they’ll get to best of seven and LA Knight will be the special guest referee for that seventh match. Back to this match. Strowman just came back. He was obviously protected here because a fluke count out loss is almost meaningless, but the whole thing just felt unnecessary and boring (in terms of booking, at least). Bah humbug.

Hayes started the match by kicking Strowman’s leg. Braun no-sold it. Hayes punched Strowman, but that just seemed to make Strowman angry. Hayes slid to the outside and Strowman chased Hayes around the ring. When the two got back into the ring, Melo cut Strowman off, but Strowman shoved Hayes off. Strowman threw Melo back into the ring, but Melo kicked Strowman’s leg again. Melo then jumped into an attempted chokeslam, but Melo countered by planting Strowman. Strowman got up and ran at Hayes, but Hayes pulled the top rope down and Strowman went to the outside.

Hayes ran around the ring, but Strowman took Melo down once Melo ran into Strowman. Melo leapt at Strowman, but Strowman caught Melo. Strowman threw Melo back into the ring, but nobody noticed the count was at nine. So, with Melo back in the ring, Strowman was on the outside as the referee counted to 10. So, Hayes got the win via count out. Hayes then ran through the crowd and Strowman chased Hayes.

**********

– Nia Jax and Candice LeRae were talking backstage and Tiffany Stratton walked into the frame. LeRae told Stratton to stay away from ringside during their tag match later. Stratton walked away looking dejected.

– Melo was shown walking backstage and ran into Legado Del Fantasma. Strowman showed up and asked Santos Escobar where Melo was. Angel pointed Strowman in a direction and Strowman ran into Pretty Deadly. Hayes then attacked Strowman with a chair and took Strowman out, but Strowman got up and kept walking with his mad face on.

Johnny Gargano defeated Alex Shelley [10:03 of TV time]

As I write this, we are about 20 minutes from this episode of SmackDown concluding and this has to be the most uninspired WWE television show of 2024, tape delay or not. My goodness. This match was weirdly uninteresting. Two very good wrestlers combining for a cold-as-ice bout that never clicked into any gear – not just the often-referenced “next gear,” but any gear at all. The whole thing was disappointing at best. The #DIY/MCMG thing just isn’t working and someone somewhere needs to figure out how to get both teams in a different direction.

Shelley backed Gargano into a corner and pounded on him until Gargano worked his way out and chopped Shelley. Gargano ran towards Shelley, but Shelley moved and gained control. It didn’t last for long because Gargano came right back and stomped on Shelley. The pace, early on at least, was slower than expected. With Gargano on the apron, Shelley hit a neck-breaker and then kicked Gargano in the head. Shelley followed that up with a running knee outside the ring. The show then went to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Gargano had control back inside the ring. Gargano went for a slingshot spear, but Shelley got his leg up and kicked Gargano. The two then traded chops. Shelley went for an arm bar, but Gargano countered into a roll-up for a two-count. Shelley planted Gargano and went back to work on Gargano’s arm. Shelley then chopped Gargano repeatedly. Gargano came back and kicked Shelley twice before running Shelley’s head into the second turnbuckle for a two-count.

Gargano went for a Gargano Escape, but Shelley got to his feet and before long, planted Gargano face-first into the second turnbuckle. Shelley went to the top, but Ciampa showed up and distracted Shelley. Sabin walked out and chased Ciampa away. In the meantime, Shelley hit a cross-body from the top, but Gargano rolled through and held Shelley’s tights to get the win.

– Saxton interviewed Belair and Naomi guerrilla position. Naomi said she has Belair’s back forever and she said she knows how important the tag belts are to Belair and Cargill and she’d do everything in her power to make sure they win. Naomi then made her entrance for the main event.

Naomi & Bianca Belair defeated Nia Jax & Candice LeRae to retain the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship [11:05]

I don’t know what was up with Jax appearing to be busted all types of open near the end of the match because right before the show ended, we saw Jax again and there was barely any blood to be found, but that looked nasty for a second. Either way, this was a pedestrian main event on a less-than-pedestrian SmackDown. I don’t mind taped shows, but this felt so much like everyone was mailing it in on the basis of the holidays that these two hours were a hard watch. I guess this means Naomi is officially a world tag team champion now, so it should be interesting to see what happens when Cargill rejoins the conversation. For now, this was a completely missable episode of SmackDown. Driving around to look at Christmas lights never felt more appealing.

Belair and LeRae began the match and Belair threw LeRae across the ring. Belair then lifted LeRae, but LeRae got out of it and tagged in Jax. Belair worked a headlock and then kicked Jax. Naomi tagged in and Naomi landed the split splash on Jax while Belair hit her moonsault on Jax. That was good enough for a two-count. Jax almost instantly got up and took Naomi out. From there, the show went to a commercial break.

The show returned and Belair had control until Jax tagged in and hit a Samoan Drop on Belair for a two-count. Jax went to work on Belair’s back. Belair ran at Jax, but Jax moved and Belair hit the ring post. Jax worked on Belair’s neck, but Belair fought out of it, but Jax kept Belair cut off from Naomi. LeRae tagged in and hit a missile dropkick on Belair before following that up with a Senton off Jax’s back. All of that earned LeRae a two-count.

Jax tagged back in and grabbed Belair’s braid. Belair somehow wiggled away from Jax and LeRae after there was some miscommunication amongst the heels and Naomi received the hot tag. Naomi hit an X-Factor on Jax for a two-count. Jax ran at Naomi, but Naomi moved and Jax hit the ring post. Naomi tried a split-legged moonsault, but Jax moved and set up for her finisher, but Naomi got up and hit a powerbomb on Jax, whose head was super busted open. Belair landed a 360 splash on Jax, but only got a two-count.

Stratton appeared and walked down to ringside. LeRae hit a Tornado DDT on Belair, but Naomi saved a pin attempt. Jax jawed at the referee, so the ref didn’t see the tag between Naomi and Belair. Jax grabbed the MITB briefcase from Stratton, but the ref stopped Jax from using it. Back in the ring, Naomi hit the split-legged moonsault on LeRae to get the win. After the match, Belair officially handed Naomi her tag title and the babyfaces posed in the middle of the ring. They then posed on the second rope with their belts as the show went off the air.

Alex Shelley thanks fans for their support following WWE debut

Alex Shelley is thanking fans for their support.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Shelley thanked fans and family for their support throughout the years. He and Chris Sabin made their debut as the Motor City Machine Guns on last Friday’s SmackDown.

“I want to express gratitude to everybody that supported me throughout not just my pro wrestling career but my life and that’s friends, and that’s co-workers, and that’s family. You don’t necessarily have to be a blood relative to be family, but we did it,” he said.

“Now I’m a WWE superstar. To be able to verbalize that has a very, very deep and profound sense of power here,” he continued, pressing on his chest. “And again, I couldn’t have done it without the support of so many people…so many different points of my life. I think whether you believe in the creator or fate or the universe…I have to be one of the most blessed people out there to have come this far and to be able to accomplish that goal and now the hard work begins. But again, thank you so, so much, I truly mean that. And I couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks for pushing me along and picking me up when I was gonna fall and encouraging me and never letting me give up and, gosh. Here we go.”

The Motor City Machine Guns won their three-way match on Friday and will face DIY on this coming Friday’s show to determine the next contenders for the WWE Tag Team titles currently held by The Bloodline (Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa).

Motor City Machine Guns expected to debut in WWE NXT ‘imminently’

Image: TNA

The eventual landing spot for longtime TNA Wrestling stars Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin has been a question for most of the summer and in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, fans might finally have got their answer.

After first reporting in mid-July that there was belief they were WWE-bound, our Dave Meltzer reported Friday that the Motor City Machine Guns tag team are expected to debut in WWE NXT “imminently.”

No date accompanied the news, but WWE’s developmental brand will kick off their new TV era on The CW on Tuesday, October 1st.

The team hasn’t wrestled since losing an August 18th indie match against Evil Uno & Stu Grayson.

The veteran duo entered into free agency after their TNA contracts expired this past April and reportedly talked with both AEW and WWE. They are highly decorated after holding tag titles in TNA, Ring of Honor, NJPW and other indie promotions.

Individually, they have also had success with the 41-year-old Shelley holding the TNA World title and the 42-year-old Sabin holding the TNA X-Division title ten times.

Sabin has never appeared in WWE while Shelley lost a 2005 enhancement talent bout and returned for three NXT matches in January 2020 alongside KUSHIDA.

Alex Shelley offers ‘spoiler alert’ at indie show amid WWE rumors

Former TNA World Champion Alex Shelley leaned into the rumors that he and longtime Motor City Machine Guns tag team partner Chris Sabin are bound for WWE.

After working a West Coast Pro Wrestling/Deadlock Pro/Prestige combo event in San Francisco, California Saturday in a loss to Alpha Zo, Shelley took to the microphone to share a quick thought about the future.

“Spoiler alert: I might not come back here. And if I don’t, I know the future of pro wrestling is safe and sound inside a West Coast Pro ring. I have talked to long and the last thing I want to say is thank you so much for the last two and a half years,” he said.

Shelley and Sabin hit free agency after their TNA contracts expired in April and their next destination had been speculated to be either WWE or AEW.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, our Dave Meltzer reported that the belief is the veteran duo is WWE-bound, mentioning on the subsequent Wrestling Observer Radio that he assumed they will go to NXT. Sabin has never appeared in WWE while Shelley lost a squash match back in 2005 and returned for three NXT bouts in January 2020 bouts alongside KUSHIDA.

Shelley and Sabin do have an August 18th indie date still on the books.

Motor City Machine Guns free agency update

WWE may be on the verge of adding a top free agent tag team to its ranks.

Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) entered into free agency when their TNA Wrestling contracts expired this April. The veteran tag team has had talks with both WWE and AEW, but it’s looking like WWE is the more likely destination. Dave Meltzer reports in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that there’s a belief within wrestling that Shelley & Sabin are headed to WWE.

“Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley are expected to be coming here [WWE], or at least that’s the talk within wrestling. Nobody has officially said anything. They worked a 7/12 independent show in a singles match against each other that Sabin won for Prestige Wrestling in Portland, OR, and then did their in-ring goodbyes to indie wrestling. However, they’ve been announced for an 8/18 show in London, ONT for Smash Wrestling against Evil Uno & Stu Grayson at the Music Hall,” Meltzer wrote. “It’s been known for months that they had been talking with AEW and WWE ever since their TNA contracts expired. Of late, the indications were WWE made the better offer but they were expected to be with whichever side made the best offer. Within wrestling the belief is that they are WWE-bound and Tommaso Ciampa made a reference to them in social media. They’ve also been completely silent about it and clearly have made their decision one way or the other.”

Motor City Machine Guns have been tag team champions in TNA, ROH, NJPW, and several indie promotions. Their singles careers have included a TNA World Championship reign for Shelley and ten X-Division title reigns for Sabin.

In 2020, Shelley teamed with KUSHIDA in NXT’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. Sabin has never wrestled for WWE before.

TNA Impact live results: Rebellion go-home show

In what could be their final match in the promotion, The Motor City Machine Guns will challenge The System for the TNA Tag Team titles on tonight’s edition of Impact: the final one before Saturday’s Rebellion pay-per-view.

Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin will be looking for their fourth reign as champions while Brian Myers & Eddie Edwards are trying for their first defense. The Machine Guns became free agents after this set of TV tapings with their future still unknown.

The champions after tonight will defend against Speedball Mountain (Mike Bailey & Trent Seven) on Saturday.

Nic Nemeth will be on hand to give some thoughts ahead of his challenge of TNA World Champion Moose Saturday.

Ahead of his Last Man Standing trilogy match with Josh Alexander Saturday, Hammerstone will face Guido of The FBI.

In a preview of Saturday’s Knockouts Tag Team title match, Spitfire’s Jody Threat will face Decay’s Rosemary.

The Hammerstone-Alexander brawl leading to Dreamer getting beaten down gets recapped alongside the Jordynne Grace-Steph De Lander contract signing and ensuing beatdown of Grace by SDL. Josh Alexander walked out to do commentary for Guido vs. Hammerstone.

Hammerstone defeated Little Guido

Guido is a perfect opponent for Hammerstone because he’s a naturally lanky guy and he makes Hammerstone look even more gigantic. Hammerstone started off with a shove into the corner before a corner-to-corner shoulder charge and a Biel throw out of the corner. Hammerstone landed a corner lariat, but ate a chop before landing a big backbreaker and a squatting fallaway slam.

Zack Clayton shoves Hammerstone out and the ref rightfully kicks Clayton out. Hammerstone came in, but ate hammerfists and a basement dropkick for 2. Hammerstone put the headgear onto Guide and the torture rack ended it. Ash By Elegance’s concierge told us all that she will at ringside at Rebellion to face the winner of the Knockouts Title match. Xia Brookside hopped into frame to let her know that they’ll have a match next week – presumably for the top contender spot.

SDL’s beating of Grace last week is shown in more detail before we see Jordynne Grace at the airport saying that Cardona won’t be at Rebellion because of his surgery and that should make it a fair fight – but she knows she’ll have something up her sleeve. LSG struts out looking like a star in this match with Joe Hendry where he doesn’t even get announced beforehand – which is smart. He gave off a smug aura, which is a lot better than nothing when you’re in an enhancement match. Hendry got a giant “we believe!” chant before cutting a promo on AJ Francis and Swann flying high with what he buys at the Top Dolla store.

Joe Hendry defeated LSG

LSG wanted an armbar, but Hendry rolled around the ring ala Austin Street to avoid it. Hendry turned a fallaway slam into a gorilla press slam before landing a gigantic Standing Ovation uranage. Both men looked great here. Shockingly, Hendry wasn’t beaten down after this match by the heels he’s feuding with. Time Machine’s issues dating back to the No Surrender match are recapped to set up the MCMG’s match tonight with The System for the tag titles. Ali is out and feels like the biggest act in the company presentation-wise. Deaner wants Rhino to be their partner and Rehwoldt said he didn’t know who this “Rhi-guy” is but he clearly hears no on this chant – okay that was fantastic.

Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) and Mustafa Ali defeated Jake Something, Cody Deaner & Rhino

Something slammed Gibson before Rhino tagged in to chop away before Deaner worked over the arm of Zack Gibson for a bit. Ali tagged in to mudhole stomp a weakened Deaner before Drake tagged into wear down Deaner before tagging in Ali once again. Rehwoldt demanded the formation of an appellate court so Ali can file a formal complaint about having to face Something at Rebellion. Drake prevented a tag to Rhino before Gibson came in to further take Deaner down a peg. But he got the tag anyway and Rhino ran wild!

Corner gore to Gibson before a gore met a kick to the jaw, but he fell into a tag from Something! Something charged through the GYV’s attempt at a double clothesline and then again with one of his own. Rocket launcher crossbody of Deaner got 2! Ali walked back into Something and almost ate a slam, but the GYV saved and dove into Something on the floor!

Deaner, a valiant babyface, wants a fight with all three men and they just dogpiled him in the corner. Gore to Drake and Deaner landed a knee to Gibson! Ali landed a corner high kick and a sunset bomb out of the corner before the 450 beats Deaner. As per TNA tradition, a post-match beating is teased but actually avoided as Ali just left. Steve Maclin talked about starting off the new era in TNA win its first win and no matter what the marquee says on a show, it’s always time for him to tag ’em and bag ’em.

Eric Young met with his World Class Maniac persona backstage to unleash his dark side. So now even Eric Young has a Demon version of himself and he’ll baptize Frankie Kazarian at Rebellion. Rosemary came down and Hannifan talked about the team of supernatural demons using their contractual rematch clause at Rebellion before Threat ran down.

Rosemary defeated Jody Threat

Rosemary got a reverse bearhug to start before eating a clothesline and a powerslam for 2. Rosemary got a single leg dropkick before biting Threat in the corner and locking on a hanging neck choke for a four count, breaking right before five. Rosemary got two off a German suplex and a Muta lock to Threat was ended by a rope break. Threat got a German and a clothesline for two before Rosemary landed a run-up forearm for two before a spear ended it.

Jonathan Gresham’s therapy session has him feel like he’s unheard and that’s why he wears a mask. Life is a costume party and he’s been vulnerable – but it will end soon enough. So Eric Young has the World Class Maniac persona and Gresham has The Octopus – everyone gets an alter-ego! The Guns came out before The System emerged with their titles and Edwards did bicep curls with his belt.

TNA Tag Team Champions The System (Eddie Edwards & Brian Myers) defeated The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) to retain

The Guns got a quick edge before an ad break. Edwards chopped away on Shelley before Sabin hit a dragon screw on the right leg and Shelley landed one on the left one back to back, giving Shelley an opening for a figure four leglock. Sabin locked one in on Myers before Edwards got to the rope. Alisha grabbed Shelley and he grabbed her before getting pie-faced by Eddie and then chopped hard.

Myers slowed things down with a chinlock before Shelley fired back briefly, but ate a back elbow. Edwards worked him over for a bit with a front chancery before Shelley escaped that – but Edwards knocked Sabin down before a tag could be made. Shelley got a hope spot off a corner flatliner before a combat roll into a tag and Sabin flew in with a dropkick!

Sabin hit a suicide dive through Shelley’s legs and tossed Edwards before setting Myers on top of Edwards for a double-team missile dropkick/flatliner for two. Sabin landed a helluva kick to Edwards before Myers blind tagged himself in. Backpack stunner from Edwards and the Myers elbow got 2.5! I like it – moves like that help them feel more like a cohesive team instead of a makeshift unit. Roster Cut is met with a crucifix and a Sabin cutter and vintage MCMG fast-break offense.

They were the first team on a national stage to really use the Dragon Gate style and in that time, they have become legends in TNA, with Shelley actually getting a World title run and Sabin being christened the great X Division champion of all time. Now, their story ended in TNA with a Roster Cut and a Boston Knee Party.

Nic Nemeth/Moose promo

Nic Nemeth came out and did the unwise move of running into the crowd resulting in him being impossible to see, but thankfully going back to the ring and being visible. He cut a nice promo about Vegas being special for him because it’s where he debuted in TNA before Moose interrupted. Moose insulted the fans and Nemeth said that the fans are behind him, management’s behind him and he’s here for TNA because that’s why he wore the TNA shirt in his debut.

Moose cut a boring promo about Nemeth being the problem not with a title win – but after. When he’s given the ball, he only runs a few yards and fumbles. There’s a lot missing from Moose’s presentation – on-paper, he’s got the suit, the belt, and the faction, but the passion doesn’t seem to be there. Moose wanting the title against Tessa and bringing in the fake TNA World Title to defend felt like a bigger deal than him being the actual TNA World Champion now. Nemeth tells Moose that he’s not facing Dolph Ziggler – he’s facing Nic Nemeth and the future of TNA. Nemeth should probably win the title at the PPV, but we’re only three months into Moose’s reign, so I can see them holding it off until Slammiversary.

Rebellion is this Saturday.

Report: Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin finalizing deal with AEW

The Motor City Machine Guns are reportedly expected to sign with AEW.

Cassidy Haynes of BodySlam.net reported on Tuesday that Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin are in the process of finalizing deals with the company. The report notes that a contract is not expected to be completed imminently but “the decision has been made and a deal will be worked out.”

Shelley filed to trademark the terms “Motor City Machine Guns” and “MCMG” for wrestling purposes on March 19, 2024.

Sabin and Shelley finished up with TNA Wrestling at the company’s TV tapings in Philadelphia on March 22 & 23. Their final match was against The System’s Brian Myers & Eddie Edwards and will air on Thursday’s episode of Impact on AXS TV. Sabin was defeated by Steve Maclin in the main event of last week’s show, and Shelley was defeated by Nic Nemeth in the main event of the April 4 episode.

The Big Vinny V Show: TNA Impact with Nemeth vs. Shelley

Nic Nemeth vs. Alex Shelley: the hidden gem of WrestleMania weekend. OK, technically, the match was taped in March, but it didn’t air until April 4, and it was worth the wait. The next challenger for the TNA championship faced the last man to hold the title, and each showed why they deserve main event status.

Elsewhere, X Division champion Mustafa Ali faces ECW legend Rhino in an Old School Rules match, Frankie Kazarian squares off with Chris Bey, and Ash by Elegance wrestles her fourth match.

So, yeah, it’s a one-match show, but that one match is really good. All this and more on the Big Vinny V Show!

TNA Impact live results: Nic Nemeth vs. Alex Shelley

On TNA Impact tonight, fans will be able to watch a first-time-ever matchup between two wrestling veterans.

Nic Nemeth vs. Alex Shelley headlines tonight’s Impact episode on AXS TV. The match was set up last week when Shelley interrupted a backstage interview with Nemeth. After Nemeth said he’d be honored to wrestle Shelley in the future, Shelley forced the issue and said he wanted to face Nemeth now.

Nemeth, the former Dolph Ziggler, is challenging Moose for the TNA World Championship at Rebellion.

Shelley lost the TNA World Championship to Moose at Hard to Kill this January and has been in the midst of a heel turn recently.

At the April 20 Rebellion pay-per-view, Mustafa Ali is defending his X-Division Championship against Jake Something. Ali will be in non-title action against Rhino tonight. It’s an Old School rules match, meaning there are no disqualifications or countouts.

Ash By Elegance vs. Xia Brookside and Chris Bey vs. Frankie Kazarian will also be airing on tonight’s show. Plus, The FBI make their return to TNA.

Nemeth vs. Shelley was hyped up to start the show with Nemeth saying that Shelley is respected around the world, while Shelley pointed out that he did a lot – but only in one place. Nemeth said that Shelley is a tough test for him because of how much world traveling he’s done and tapped folks out across the globe. This was an outstanding way to showcase the similarities and differences of both.

X-Division Champion Mustafa Ali walked out to face Rhino, the former ECW and TNA-era NWA World Champion. Rhino came out and slapped hands with former Philadelphia Flyer Joe Watson while TNA shilled his book on-screen.

X-Division Mustafa Ali defeated Rhino in an non-title Old School Rules match

Rhino overpowered Ali to start amidst an “ECW” chant. They walked and brawled on the floor before Rhino missed a chop on the post, which gave Ali an edge until Rhino tossed him around ringside. Rehwoldt buried an ECW chant saying it’s time to move on and it’s been 20 years while Rhino pulled out weapons. Ali grabbed a copy of Watson’s book and put it in a trash can. Okay, that’s a new one – and he pulled out a giant PWI cover, which makes two new spots in this one already. Rhino grabbed the book out of the trash for a photo op with Watson before just throwing it, which may actually have been funnier than Ali throwing it carefully into a trash can.

Ali set him up for a Van Terminator for two. The fans chant “this is awesome” and after seeing Billy Gunn vs. Jay White, it honestly is compared to that. Ali set up a corner gore into the trash can in a corner, but Rhino avoided it. Rhino hit a corner gore of his own before a table chant leads to Rhino obliging. Rhino took Ali down with a spinebuster before Ali’s secret service bump around for Rhino. Gore through the corner table missed and Ali scored a pin. All right – in theory, they shouldn’t book the X-Division champion to luck his way into a win against Rhino in 2024, but Philly was the place to do it.

As is modern-day TNA tradition, Jake Something came out to brawl with Ali and render the match result largely meaningless. Something broke the cover over Ali and then Something took out more of the secret service with a power bomb. The roster talked about how excited they are for Nemeth vs. Shelley tonight and this is a fine example of how you use the cards you have to make a match feel as big as possible.

Hammerstone promo

Gia Miller welcomed Hammerstone to the ramp for a chat with him adorning his arm in Josh Alexander’s headgear. Miller asked if he’s afraid of Alexander and he said just look at him – he has no reason to be afraid of him or even wrestle him. He tells Alexander that all of his injuries will feel like nothing when he’s through with him – at Rebellion.

Hammerstone grabbed the camera for the latter-half of the promo before taking out the camera guy with a forearm and camel clutch with the headgear before the torture rack. This was shot really nicely with them going back to the guy’s fallen camera to show the ill-effects of the torture rack.

– The Rascalz came out to call out Chicago, New York, and then finally Philly before Trey Miguel buried ECW’s tag teams before saying they’ll give Philly a chance to see a real tag team. The FBI came out with Guido and two new members of the FBI that he identifies as Zach Clayton and Ray Jazz.

The Rascalz (Trey Miguel & Zachary Wentz) defeated The FBI (Ray Jaz and Zack Clayton)

Hannifan hyped up Jaz as being an all-American as he took down Miguel quickly. Miguel raked the face against the top rope, leading to Jaz hitting a Sicilian Slice off the second rope. Clayton tagged in for a double-team on Wentz, but Myron Reed returned to spray paint Guido in the face. It opened the door for a Miguel spinebuster and a double stomp/power bomb to win it.

– Part one of a series featuring Jonathan Gresham aired, showing him at a group meeting, saying he needs to wear a mask before quick, ominous cuts showed him in blue.

– Speedball Mountain chatted with Gia Miller about Bailey getting cheated out of a win last week against Edwards. Moose said that they’ve got the gold and Seven said they’ll get the tag titles and he’ll knock out Moose next week.

Frankie Kazarian defeated Chris Bey (w/ Ace Austin)

Kazarian played a nice heel to start things off, bullying Jade Chung that he is the King of TNA. Bey jumped Kaz on the apron and slugged him on the floor. Bey landed a slick sliding dropkick and double stomp before a forearm exchange between the two and Bey sent him down with a diving forearm. Bey went up top, but got tripped up and Kaz played bully heel. With him being so much stockier than Bey, it’s a good role for him in this match.

Kazarian ran him into the corner for an atomic drop/tree of woe and landed a backstabber. Kaz sent him down with a single leg dropkick and rope choke in front of Bey to rub it in. Kazarian grounded him with a surfboard before wanting a crossface chicken wing after the break ended that Bey avoided. Bey landed a slick spin wheel kick before a Stinger splash-style leaping uppercut in the corner. Kazarian hit the slingshot legdrop, but couldn’t land the slingshot DDT but Bey did and got two off of it.

Kazarian avoided the Art of Finesse before Kazarian threw him out for a slingshot cutter. This is an outstanding match and the best singles showcase Bey has had yet in TNA. Kaz wrapped a chain around his hand and Austin grabbed it, which the ref saw and kicked him out. Kaz bragged about it, but ate a Bey flip dive as a result. Bey walked in and ate a low blow before Fade to Black gives Kaz the win.

– MK Ultra’s issues on Xplosion were recapped before Masha Slamovich talked for a bit in Russian. Alisha Edwards told her that they need to be a team now that Killer Kelly is gone since she needs a title for The System.

– Josh Alexander talked about how much he admires Alex Shelley for traveling the world while Nemeth achieved great success in one place.

– Big Kon cut a promo about being one of two monsters that will fight in a Monster’s Ball match with PCO. That is seemingly set up for next week – which is odd as that feels like a PPV match.

Ash by Elegance defeated Xia Brookside

Brookside was out before Ash’s concierge came out and told everyone to leave because it’s history: it’s Ash’s fourth match in TNA. Tom Hannifan brought up the 8-4-1 match that Ash didn’t wrestle in before wishing harm on the concierge because he’s so annoying.

The match started with bickering before Brookside avoided a kick and then argued with her some more. Ash stalls on the floor and threatened to leave before eating an elbow by Brookside, who then threatened the concierge. Ash shoved her into the steps for a 9 count and then a two count mid-ring. Ash choked her on the rope and demanded the fans take photos of her. Ash landed a series of iffy kicks for a variety of two counts before a baseball slide to Brookside.

Ash cartwheeled on the floor before going back in to kill more time. Ash takes a break from cartwheeling to bow for a while and she wanted the somersault senton, but Xia wanted the Brooksie bomb. Ash avoided that, but couldn’t avoid a forearm flurry and flying clotheslines. Boy is this match a lot better with her on offense than Ash. Ash went face-first into the buckle before eating a neckbreaker for 2. Ash grabbed the ring skirt and the ref corrected it so the concierge could throw champagne in Brookside’s face and Ash…gets something resembling a cradle for the win.

– Ace Austin talked to Chris Bey about now that he lost, he needs to focus on the tag titles and hey, maybe it was a bad idea to fight Kazarian. AJ Francis entered and looked 20 feet tall next to Bey. He asks if he’d like to fly first class. Bey said he’s flown with Austin first-class a ton and they’d like a tag match against First Class instead.

– Backstage, Matt Cardona and Steph De Lander hyped up SDL’s power and say they want some money and gold.

– Official for next week’s card:

  • Laredo Kid facing Crazzy Steve for the Digital Media Title
  • Jordynne Grace/Steph De Lander contract signing for Rebellion

Nic Nemeth defeated Alex Shelley

Before the match, they hyped this up more. TNA is doing a lot like New Japan hyping things up with video packages and they’re doing so with Filmpic-style video to make things look even better in slow motion. It’s an impressive use of a smaller budget.

Hannifan hyped up Nemeth’s WWE accolades while Hannifan goes into Shelley’s experience in New Japan while pointing out that Nemeth is now the IWGP Global Champion. Nemeth worked him to the mat for a quick amateur-style two count. Nemeth got custom gear made for this one with an ECW logo-style Wanted F’N Man logo on the back and red, white and blue barb wire across his tights. Shelley sent him outside for an ad break.

Shelley landed a slick baseball slide before slamming Nemeth’s arm into the post as they talk about Shelley being a physical therapist and understanding anatomy better than anyone to damage it. Shelley worked heel and teased not stomping the arm before doing so as Rehwoldt talked about Shelley being broken since the No Surrender match. Shelley locked in a straightjacket choke mid-ring before Shelley got too cocky on the floor and is pulled into the post by Nemeth.

Nemeth grounded him with a chicken wing on the mat before Shelley escaped with elbows to the gut, but went down off a dropkick. A Nemeth superkick is met with a Shelley chop block that is turned into a figure four. Nemeth recovered with a boot to the face holding the rope before a pair of diving lariats and a Stinger splash in the corner. The heartstopper elbows hit, but Shelley countered the tenth elbow with his knees to damage that arm as well. Shelley turned a Fujiwara armbar into the Border City Stretch briefly, but Nemeth escaped it before going into the buckle with a flatliner.

A tornado DDT gets 2 for Shelley and then the Border City Stretch is locked in mid-ring! Nemeth got to the rope, but started to bite the hand of Shelley to escape the grip. Shelley avoided a jumping DDT with a pumphandle on the bad left arm, but Nemeth snaps a leaping DDT off close to the rope – allowing Shelley to get the rope at 2. Shelley avoided a superkick, but Sliced Bread was avoided and opened the door for a Nemeth superkick to get 2.

Nemeth avoided Shell Shock and Shelley avoided the Danger Zone before the BC Stretch is turned into a cradle for two. Shelley hit a superkick, but opened himself for the Danger Zone and a Nic Nemeth victory. This was a fantastic TV main event and another strong TNA match in a year full of them.
