New match announced for WWE Raw

Penta says he will defend his Intercontinental Championship against Rey Mysterio on Monday’s edition of WWE Raw.

Mysterio earned the right to challenge for the Intercontinental title on the May 25 edition of the show, defeating Rusev in singles competition.

On Saturday, Penta posted to Instagram that the match will take place on the June 8 Raw and called it the most meaningful match of his career.

Penta wrote:

Two Loves & A Loathing about wrestling | Opinion

I was playing the game “Two Truths and a Lie” with my kids the other day and was having fun coming up with the most egregious lies I could think of (“Did you know Daddy invented Spider-Man? True story.”) and something started the gears turning in relation to this column.

There’s a lot about wrestling that I deeply love. The athletics, the ability to tell a story, the pomp and (dare I say) the circumstance, which are all unique in the entertainment landscape. Like any good fan though, there is a bunch of stuff I absolutely can’t stand as well — playing music during run-ins, inconsistent rule enforcements and the obsession with wrestling as a “business,” to name a few.

I am also pretty tired of reading and writing about complaints within and around the industry. So, on an occasion like this where there’s no one topic bouncing around in my brain for my fingers to convey to you, I thought why not do some quick hits in the form of Two Loves And A Loathing, so that I’m bringing a little bit of positivity while also pointing out something I feel needs improving. So with all that said:

LOVE: AEW Double or F*cking Nothing

A lot has been said about AEW’s Double or Nothing show this past weekend with WOR’s Dave Metlzer and Bryan Alvarez agreeing that it was one of the best AEW PPVs of all time. I heartily agree and think AEW is entering a really good period at the moment. They are telling great stories and featuring some incredible talents.

One thing that stuck out to me during the show was the use of profanity, particularly during the opening tag match that saw Christian Cage telling FTR to “go f*ck themselves” and that he “banged [Dax]’s mom.”

Now, I’m not going to argue that wrestling needs more salty language and mom jokes (well, it does need more mom jokes) but my head snapped up both times I heard Cage tempt the censors. I don’t know if this is a regular thing or it was because it was on PPV that they felt like they could get away with more, or if it was just how it went in the moment, but it weirdly added to the authenticity of the match.

If I’m getting my hand smashed with a chair while inside a cinderblock on top of some steel stairs, I’m probably not going to say, “No, sir. I decline your invitation to quit” when they stick a mic in my face. I’m going to use swear words and insults that would make Shakespeare blush. It was a little thing amongst a lot that was good about Double or Nothing, but I really liked it.

Loathe: The Promo Parade

Something that bugged me to no end in WWE from five or six years ago was The Promo Parade. This would occur, usually to open the show, when someone would come down to the ring and cut a promo. A few minutes in, someone would interrupt and cut a promo on them. Then someone ELSE would interrupt and cut a promo on THEM. This would get sometimes four or five wrestlers deep and suddenly the first half hour of WWE would be over with nothing accomplished.

I had hoped I was done with this phenomenon but sadly, when I took over recapping TNA recently (Thursday nights and it’s actually a lot of fun) I discovered that the Promo Parade was alive and well in the place where the Action is Total and Nonstop.

One of the things that takes me out of suspending my wrestling disbelief is when the show as a show stops making sense. This includes making main event matches on the fly (what were they going to do if Rey Mysterio wasn’t in that night or didn’t want an Intercontinental Title shot?), contract signings and ending shows on talking segments repeatedly.

The Promo Parade ticks all these boxes at the same time. It makes it look like the show (which is supposed to be a sporting event, I remind you) is unplanned, It takes up TV time setting up matches that could have just been announced and executed. The method may get a PLE plug in there, but at the cost of seeing something that would have made me way more excited to see said event.

Promos obviously have a place within the show and they are a key part of selling the idea and story of pro wrestling. All I’m saying is we don’t have to do them all at once and at the same time.

LOVE:  Rey Mysterio as GM of AAA

On this past weekend’s episode of AAA, leading into part one of the two-night Noche de Los Grandes this weekend, WWE Hall of Famer, former World Champion and deadbeat dad Rey Mysterio Jr. was named the promotion’s general manager.

Does Rey have the chops and history to handle running the AAA ship? Absolutely. Does this mean that he and his no-good son Dominik (the current AAA Mega Champion) will be at odds? Almost certainly. Will this lead to more twists and turns in the Psycho Circus clown drama? I dunno, but I hope so!

Bringing in someone like Mysterio is a great idea because he has the love and pedigree of lucha libre that make him a natural choice. Lucha Libre can be a little daunting and inaccessible to a casual fan, but Mysterio has the name recognition that will perk up the casual fan’s ears.

While I’ve noticed a few WWEKO-isms creeping into AAA (Obsession with authority figures, “street fight” type matches and contract signings) I think that making Rey the GM will go a long way to getting people checking out what is arguably the best, most entertaining wing of the WWE empire.

Next Week: I play checkers with my kids and tell you how the NWO Hollywood vs NWO Wolfpac story should have played out.

Sherilyn Guerrero recalls brotherly bond with CM Punk after Eddie Guerrero’s passing

Sherilyn Guerrero opened up about how she perceives CM Punk as an older brother who has assisted whenever needed. She also explains the Mysterio family’s impact in her life.

In an interview on the Smoothvega Podcast, Guerrero talked about her relationship with CM Punk especially after her father’s passing. And emphasized how he’s been like  an older brother throughout.

“So with CM Punk, I would go with him to his Make-A-Wishes, I would follow him around the ring. He was an older brother I needed after my dad passed away, and to see him was so heartwarming. We just hugged, I think when I saw Big show, JBL, I actually saw JBL in Bay City for the first time before you know the com the conventions and there’s a warm embrace I think they kind of feel my dad when they hug me so it’s a healing for both of us, for me it’s just like as a kid and for them it’s like I think I bring a presence of my dad with them so I hope it’s as heartwarming I think it is too. But I know CM Punk was like, ‘Don’t tell me you’re wrestling.’ I said, ‘I sure am,’ and he just embraced me.”

She also talked about Rey and Dominik Mysterio’s approachability for advice.

“I really feel like it was just, it’s supposed to happen reconnecting and then seeing Rey. Luckily Dom is someone I can really go to. He gives great advice. He keeps it real and I love that. Rey will keep it real, but seeing them, it’s just a, yeah, it’s a hug. It’s a hug that I can’t forget. It’s a moment that without the cameras and anything that’s probably a core memory that I can hold on to.”

Guerrero began training at Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling school around October 2025. And is hopeful for an official in-ring debut this year.

Rey Mysterio earns WWE Intercontinental Championship match on Raw

Rey Mysterio has a lot on his plate these days. Outside the ring, he’s going to a major onscreen character in Mexico. And inside the ring, he’s still in major championship contention.

Over the weekend, Mysterio was named the new General Manager in AAA. Just a few days later, on Monday Night Raw, he earned a shot at the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Mysterio defeated Rusev to win the IC title shot. He hung Rusev in the ropes and attempted a 619, but Rusev caught the swinging kick and dragged Mysterio to the middle of the ring to apply the accolade. Mysterio slipped out of the submission hold and hooked a schoolboy for the win.

Afterwards, Mysterio was attacked by Rusev and Ethan Page. Dragon Lee hit the ring to even the odds, and the babyfaces sent the heels packing.

Penta is the reigning Intercontinental Champion. He won the belt from Rey’s son Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series: War Games last November, and most recently defended it against Je’Von Evans tonight on Monday Night Raw.

The elder Mysterio is a two-time former Intercontintal champion himself. He first won the title from John “Bradshaw” Layfield at WrestleMania 25 in 2009. (To date, this remains JBL’s last singles match.) He lost the title to Chris Jericho at Extreme Rules in June that same year, then beat Jericho to win it back in a mask vs. title match The Bash later that month.

He eventually lost the championship to John Morrison on SmackDown the following September.

He has unsuccessfully challenged for the title several times since then, most recently in a six-man ladder match at WrestleMania 42. Penta walked in and out of that match as champion. JD McDonagh, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and Evans were the other combatants in the match.

Four WWE tag teams that could reinvigorate their divisions | Opinion

WWE has reportedly been discussing an overhaul of the tag team division following recent talent cuts, seemingly intensified after the departures of the Motor City Machine Guns and the New Day, two instrumental tag teams in the last decade+.

Their exits, particularly Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, left noticeable gaps in star power in the tag team division.

WWE already has several potential tag teams in place that could help re-shape both the men’s and women’s tag divisions. Let’s take a look.

Lainey Reid & Fallon Henley

Fatal Influence made a statement debut on the April 24 edition of WWE SmackDown. Led by Jacy Jayne, the stable attacked during Brie Bella and Paige’s Women’s Tag Team Title defense against Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair.

Jayne confronted Rhea Ripley later that same night and they squared off in an impromptu singles match. Her extensive time on the NXT roster has familiarized her with fans. Meanwhile, Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley’s pairing has the potential to take over the division as their presentation and chemistry as a team could evolve to strengthen themselves as challengers for tag team gold.

Additionally, it would prove beneficial especially at a time when the division is in need of newer, long-term teams beyond temporary and outdated pairings.

Rey Mysterio & Rey Fenix

While not an official tag team, Mysterio and Fenix’s union has proven to be entertaining and charismatic in previous matches. The two share and complement each other’s wrestling styles.

Following Mysterio’s injury earlier this year, he participated in the ladder match at WrestleMania for the Intercontinental Title. Despite still showcasing in-ring agility that defined his early years, the new AAA general manager could benefit from a tag team alliance with Fenix.

Fenix recently teased the pursuit of the Intercontinental Championship, currently held by his brother Penta. He remains a fan favorite, but has yet to win a title in the company. WWE could utilize the tag team momentum to give him his first championship win. Simultaneously teaming up with someone of Mysterio’s stature would permit the veteran to take fewer bumps and still continue a prominent on-screen presence.

The Creed Brothers

Brutus and Julian Creed were dominant and athletically impressive on NXT. They joined the Raw roster in 2023 and shortly after, won a tag team turmoil match to contend for the undisputed Tag Team Titles.

Barely a year later, they joined forces with Chad Gable but ultimately lost their identity as a tag team. Earlier this month, they were introduced as Bruto Credo and Julio Credo (Los Americanos Hermanos), joining the Original El Grande Americano in his battle against Los Americanos.

If the main roster audience is introduced to their former versions portrayed on NXT, they have potential to establish themselves as one of WWE’s finest tag teams. Their combination of amateur wrestling with intense in-ring athleticism already has sturdy credibility already built in.

Bayley & Lyra Valkyria

Bayley’s hard fought battle to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles has not been fruitful for more than a year now. Becky Lynch replaced her to team up with Lyra Valkyria at WrestleMania 41 to win the championship.

This year, Bayley and Valkyria competed in a fatal four-way match for the titles again, but came up short. Despite the losses, the pairing has showcased a balanced chemistry with Bayley’s veteran leadership and Valkyria’s rising star momentum.

Bayley’s influence on women’s wrestling has extended beyond WWE, particularly through the Lodestone Wrestling Seminars.

WWE has lacked consistent tag teams in the women’s division. Most have stemmed from mutual convenience or short-term storylines, case in point, Paige’s return to replace Nikki Bella.

Rey Mysterio named new general manager of AAA

Rey Mysterio is Lucha Libre AAA’s brand new general manager.

After weeks of teasing on AAA on Fox, the promotion’s brand-new general manager was announced on Saturday, May 23, 2026, during the live episode.

AAA President Marisela Pena kicked off the May 23, 2026 episode with the new general manager announcement. Several AAA legends and current talent were in the ring and ringside for the announcement. Pena’s son, Dorian Roldan, was also inside the ring beside his mother, hoping to get the job.

However, in a shocking turn of events, Pena announced WWE Hall of Famer and legendary luchador Rey Mysterio as the promotion’s new general manager. With Mysterio announced as the new authority figure, fans also connected the dots of his voice missing from the English commentary at the start of the show.

While the wrestlers and legends present inside the ring and ringside celebrated Mysterio’s appointment, Roldan and AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio were visibly upset at the announcement.

Rey Mysterio will be joining The Undertaker, part of AAA on Fox’s creative team, as the new General Manager.

Report: WWE discussing new SmackDown roster additions

WWE is reportedly planning to expand the SmackDown roster with a few names already discussed internally.

According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select WWE has discussed several names to be associated with SmackDown. Jacy Jayne and Rey Mysterio in particular have been considered for the shift.

Jayne seemed to bid farewell to NXT on the first week of Revenge after she failed to win back the Women’s Championship from Lola Vice. Her 136 day title reign ended at Stand & Deliver on April 12. Following her match last week, Jayne was spotted in tears while making her exit. She’s been an active competitor to the brand since 2021.

Her move to SmackDown will be a return and not a debut. In August 2022, Jayne and Gigi Dolin competed in a tournament for the Women’s Tag Team Titles on the brand. They were set to proceed in the next round but Dolin suffered a concussion and the duo were sidelined.

Meanwhile, Rey Mysterio returned earlier this month to announce his participation in the six-man ladder match at WrestleMania 42. He was away from in-ring competition after multiple rib fractures in January.

Rey Mysterio added to WWE WrestleMania 42 ladder match

The five-man ladder match at WrestleMania 42 now has a sixth man: Rey Mysterio.

The announcement was made on Monday Night Raw. After Penta & Dragon Lee & Je’Von Evans teamed up to defeat Los Americanos in a trios match (Evans pinned Bravo with the OG cutter), Mysterio interrupted their celebration.

Going back and forth between English and Spanish, Mysterio congratulated Penta on his Intercontinental Championship reign. He noted that their match at Mania might be one of the best ladder matches in history.

“But last year, I missed WrestleMania due to an injury,” he continued. “This year, I just spoke to Adam Pearce, and we both agreed on one thing: This ladder match at WrestleMania is missing one more person. It’s missing Rey Mysterio.”

Penta welcomed Mysterio to the match, saying “let’s make history” and shouting his catchphrase.

Your updated Mania card after the events of Monday Night Raw:

  • The Vision & iShowSpeed vs. LA Knight & The Usos

WrestleMania 42 takes place on Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. It remains to be seen which matches will be on which night.

Update on Gunther’s WWE WrestleMania 42 plans

WWE reportedly had another legend lined up for Gunther at WrestleMania 42.

BodySlam reports that Gunther was originally slated to begin a program with Rey Mysterio which would have culminated in a WrestleMania 42 match. The angle was to begin after Gunther attacked Dragon Lee on the March 2 episode of WWE Raw. However, plans for Gunther vs. Mysterio are currently uncertain due to Mysterio having suffered a rib injury in January.

Mysterio suffered fractured ribs during a match with Austin Theory on the January 26 WWE Raw. He took part in the Royal Rumble match the following Saturday but hasn’t wrestled since. Mysterio has been doing commentary for recent editions of AAA on Fox, including Saturday’s airing of the first part of Rey de Reyes.

Gunther’s attack on Lee earlier this month was his last televised appearance.

WrestleMania 42 will emanate from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19. Already scheduled for the show is Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight title and Randy Orton challenging Cody Rhodes for the WWE title.

Rey Mysterio gives update on WWE injury status

Rey Mysterio is on the mend after suffering multiple fractured ribs during a WWE Raw match back in January.

The injury happened during a singles match where Mysterio faced Austin Theory on the January 26 episode. That was Raw’s go-home show for the Royal Rumble, but Mysterio was still able to make the trip to Saudi Arabia and compete in the men’s Rumble match despite being hurt. He has not competed in the ring since then.

Last Friday, Mysterio was in Las Vegas to participate in a WWE community event ahead of WrestleMania 42. He made a quick appearance on Unlikely with Adrian Hernandez and gave an update on how he’s feeling.

“Much better than when it actually happened,” Mysterio said. “That injury occurred on January [26], which was the Monday leading into the Rumble. Fractured ribs, both left and right. So those take a little but of time to heal, but on the way up.”

Mysterio then headed to Mexico this past Saturday to do commentary for AAA’s Rey de Reyes show. The main event of the broadcast saw Mysterio’s son Dominik defeat El Hijo del Vikingo in a no DQ match to retain the AAA Mega Championship.

The 51-year-old Mysterio is already a WWE Hall of Famer. During his appearance on Unlikely, Mysterio was asked to name a specific match from his WWE career that he feels is worthy of its own induction.

“I’ll tell you what, I’m a big fan of Eddie and I [at] WrestleMania 21, WrestleMania Goes Hollywood,” Mysterio said. “And I’m also a big fan of my first pay-per-view with WWE, SummerSlam [2002], Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio.”

Rey Mysterio interested in helping WWE grow Lucha Libre AAA

Rey Mysterio is still enjoying competing in the ring, but a behind-the-scenes position in Lucha Libre AAA could potentially interest him down the line.

The 51-year-old Mysterio addressed his future goals while appearing on a new edition of Cody Rhodes’ “What Do You Wanna Talk About?” podcast. Mysterio always thought the WWE Hall of Fame would be his final accomplishment. But now that he’s achieved that while still being an active wrestler, Mysterio just wants to keep enjoying himself in the ring and working with his son Dominik until it’s eventually time to step away.

“I mean, not really,” Mysterio responded when asked if he knows what his next goal is. “I pretty much have seen more than I could imagine with the growth of Dom and his evolution here in the sport, and how he’s grown, and how he’s become his individual self, and the place that he’s carrying and taking the name to, which I always deep down inside thought that he would be bigger and better than me in a different way.

“And I guess this is the way, which is also funny because my wife said that if he ever wrestled, that she always saw him as a bad guy. And here is the bad guy that my wife obviously spent way more time with him than I did. I was always on the road, so I guess she saw a side of him that I am now seeing. Obviously, I didn’t know.”

Now that AAA is under the WWE umbrella, Mysterio thinks it would be fun to help that promotion grow. He’ll always be grateful for how AAA helped launch his career.

“But overall, I think it might be fun to help with the acquisition with AAA and be involved as much as I can with that,” Mysterio said. “And kind of start learning on how to work on the production side or how I can invest my time to eventually help AAA grow. Knowing that that was my house, my very first house or my home from day one. And from there, it all started. Everything flourished from AAA. But I’m still enjoying the moment.”

Dominik is the current Mega Champion in AAA and also holds the Intercontinental title in WWE. He and his father faced off in a tag match in December 2025 at AAA Guerra de Titanes.

Rey Mysterio gives update on daughter Aalyah’s wrestling future

Aalyah Mysterio could be following her father and brother’s footsteps into WWE.

Last year, Aalyah spent a day at the WWE Performance Center with her father and also participated in a training session at Natalya and Tyson Kidd’s Dungeon. Aalyah had been expressing interest in what it would feel like to get into the ring, but Rey Mysterio would not bring her to the Performance Center until she graduated from college. He did not expect that she would enjoy the experience, but Aalyah had fun and showed an instant connection with positioning and hitting the ropes.

Rey said on “What Do You Wanna Talk About?” that the next step for Aalyah will be going through a full week of training. If that goes well, Aalyah could decide to pursue a full-time wrestling career.

“So I said, ‘Okay, the next step would be, let’s see if you can go through a full week of training. And if you can do that and you like it afterwards, then maybe it’s something you might want to think about.’ I’m actually trying to get her out there pretty soon so she can just feel what it’s like to train every day,” Rey said. “Wake up, work out all day, sleep, back, same thing, That’s insane. Like, I’ve thought about that and it scares me, but it also excites me.”

Aalyah already has some WWE experience through being featured as an on-screen character in 2020, where she had a romance storyline with Buddy Murphy. Rey did not think Aalyah would become a wrestler, but she’s been showing interest in the possibility over the past couple of years. She graduated from the University of California San Diego last year with a degree in human biology.

Rey’s son Dominik debuted for WWE in 2020 and is a double champion at the moment, holding the Intercontinental Championship and AAA Mega Championship.

Rey Mysterio heading to Saudi Arabia for WWE Royal Rumble weekend

Rey Mysterio is now headed to Saudi Arabia for the upcoming WWE Royal Rumble weekend.

Despite reports of an injury on the January 26th edition of Monday Night Raw, WWE Hall of Famer Mysterio has uploaded a picture of himself while traveling to the Middle-Eastern country.

An unmasked Mysterio shared a picture with Penta and Dragon Lee, also unmasked, while sitting inside an airplane on social media. All three unmasked luchadors preferred to cover their face while sharing the photo.

Mysterio, Lee, and Penta have all declared for the Royal Rumble and are scheduled to compete in the match this weekend. However, there are currently no confirmed reports on Mysterio’s fitness for the match and whether he would participate or not.

Last year at the 2025 edition of Royal Rumble, Penta and Mysterio began the match as the first two entrants. While Penta lasted over 40-minutes, Mysterio was eliminated in the 24th minute.

Mysterio, 51, spent several months out of action in 2025 after suffering a groin injury in April before WrestleMania 41. He’s been back in the ring since November.

Update on Rey Mysterio after WWE Raw injury

Not much is known about the injury Rey Mysterio suffered on WWE Raw last night, but the early signs are trending optimistic.

Our Dave Meltzer notes that he’s heard Mysterio’s injury is “not serious.” There’s no further indication of what that means yet, nor is there any word on whether Mysterio will be sidelined by the injury. Mysterio has been among the entrants scheduled to compete in the men’s Royal Rumble match in Saudi Arabia this Saturday, so there should be more information regarding his status in the coming days.

Mysterio was facing Austin Theory on Raw last night when the injury happened. The exact issue is not known, but — after finishing the match — the referee had to get Mysterio out of the way during an angle where The Vision (Theory, Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, and Logan Paul) beat down Dragon Lee and Penta. The ref put up the “X” signal, calling for medical attention as Mysterio clutched at his ribs/arm. There was also a moment during the match where Mysterio appeared to be limping.

The last spot in the match was a stomp where Theory got the victory after Mysterio was distracted by The Vision brawling with Lee and Penta.

Mysterio, 51, spent several months out of action in 2025 after suffering a torn groin in April prior to WrestleMania 41. He’s been back in the ring since November.
