Lexis King wins WWE Speed title on NXT

Lexis King is the new Speed Champion.

King defeated EK Prosper to win the vacant title on Tuesday. The finish had Prosper taking out everyone at ringside, but walked into a King superkick. King then followed that up with the coronation to win his first title in WWE.

After his title win, King posted a picture of himself with the title next to a photo of his father Brian Pillman, doing the same pose after he won the WCW Light Heavyweight title years ago.

The men’s Speed title became vacant recently after the former champion, Elio LeFleur, tore his labrum during a house show match forcing him to take time off. A new tournament was held with Propser, who LeFleur encouraged to enter, and King ended up going to the finals.

King has seen a resurgence in NXT since starting the new Birthright stable, joining forces with the likes of of Charlie Dempsey, Uriah Connors, Stacks, and Arianna Grace. They recently competed in a tournament to crown new number one contenders for the Tag Team titles, but ultimately lost to Los Americanos.

Two title matches set for next WWE NXT

Two title matches are set for next week’s NXT.

After Tavion Heights won the Speed number one contenders tournament, he will get his match against Jasper Troy on next week’s show. Both confronted one another during an Ethan Page promo where Josh Briggs, Heights, Troy, Stacks, and Hill all came out to exchange words. In the same segment Hill announced his TNA International title match against Stacks for next week’s show as well.

The segment ended, typically, in a brawl. Somewhere along the line Hill grabbed Stacks’ fiance Arianna Grace and the two danced. Hill’s tooth fell on Grace the process, causing her to flee the ring in disgust.

A no disqualification match will also take place, with Joe Hendry facing Dion Lennox. After DarkState jumped Hendry during a concert, he asked Ava this week to put him in the match against Lennox. Ava said she’d sign off if he would find two guys who could back him up. Hendry asked OTM, who seemed reluctant at first, but after Hendry pointed out they’d be one step closer to the tag team titles, they agreed.

Lola Vice will also be in action, taking on Kelani Jordan. The two ended up fighting backstage after Jordan overheard Vice talking about her.

WWE NXT (January 13)

  • No disqualification: Joe Hendry vs. Dion Lennox
  • TNA International title: Stacks defends against Shiloh Hill
  • Men’s WWE Speed Championship: Jasper Troy defends against Tavion Heights
  • Lola Vice vs. Kelani Jordan

New number one contender for WWE Speed Championship crowned

The next WWE Speed Championship match is now set.

Jasper Troy defeated Axiom in the finals of the number one contendership tournament that took place Tuesday on NXT. The two fought for the duration of the time limit before Troy was able to grab Axiom and pin him with the black hole slam with six seconds left on the clock. Troy now has earned a Speed title match against El Grande Americano on the November 11 edition of NXT.

Rayo and Bravo, Americano’s associates, have been seen in the crowd in recent weeks scouting the competition. Although Grande Americano has been champion dating back to May, he has not been seen with the championship on main roster television. He did cut a promo about the tournament during this past weekend’s NXT Halloween Havoc event.

The Women’s Speed Championship was declared vacant on Tuesday after Sol Ruca decided to focus on her recovery, handing the title over to Ava. A tournament will be held starting on next week’s show to crown a new champion.

WWE NXT Heatwave notes: Speed titles coming to brand, Ricky Saints

Notes from Sunday’s WWE NXT Heatwave.

After Sol Ruca has been appearing in recent weeks with the Women’s Speed Championship, it was announced that the titles would be defended in NXT moving forward. Ruca will defend her title next month in a tournament that begins on the September 2 edition of NXT. The participants will include a participant from NXT, TNA, AAA, and a participant from the Raw & SmackDown brands. The winner of this tournament will challenge Ruca at WWE NXT No Mercy on September 27 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

El Grande Americano currently holds the WWE Speed men’s championship. It wasn’t announced when he’d defend his title next

In the main event of Sunday’s show, Oba Femi was successful in defeating Je’Von Evans. After the referee was knocked out, Evans hit a springboard cutter as another referee came out and counted three. However, the original referee called it off, saying Femi’s foot was under the rope. Femi dodged a top rope maneuver by Evans and shot put him into the announcer’s table below. He then put him back into the ring and pinned Evans to retain the title.

After the match, Ricky Starks came out and had a staredown with Femi as the show went off the air.

El Grande Americano defeats Dragon Lee for WWE Speed title

El Grande Americano — the loosely disguised alter ego of Chad Gable — now holds WWE gold.

Americano is the new WWE Speed Champion after defeating Dragon Lee for the belt. The title change was taped at Raw earlier this week and aired on Speed today. Lee had the advantage until he tried to rip off Americano’s mask. When the referee stopped Lee, that gave Americano an opportunity to load his mask up with a weapon. Lee kicked Americano in the face but hurt his own leg against the loaded mask. Americano then connected with a diving headbutt off the top rope for the victory.

With the victory, Americano becomes the fourth men’s WWE Speed Champion in history. Ricochet, Andrade, and Dragon Lee are the prior champs.

Gable adopted this gimmick as part of his quest to conquer lucha libre following a loss to Penta. The Americano character is a self-proclaimed lucha libre legend who supposedly has a rich history of success in Mexico.

WWE Speed shifts its focus back to the women’s division this Friday as the tournament to crown a new number one contender begins. The tournament winner will get the first shot at new WWE Speed Women’s Champion Sol Ruca.

Here are the first-round matchups:

  • Kelani Jordan vs. Wren Sinclair
  • Maxxine Dupri vs. Ivy Nile

Dragon Lee defeats Andrade for WWE Speed title

Dragon Lee is the third-ever wrestler to hold the WWE Speed Championship.

A title change aired on Speed this week with Dragon Lee defeating Andrade to become the new champion. Taped in Milwaukee at last Friday’s SmackDown event, the match took up nearly 4:30 of the extended five-minute time limit that exists for title bouts. Andrade appeared to take advantage of the match by countering Operation Dragon in the closing stretch, but Lee used an inside cradle to get the pinfall victory as Andrade was going for Three Amigos.

The two shook hands after the match and Andrade put the WWE Speed title belt around Lee’s waist.

Ricochet, Andrade, and Lee are the first three wrestlers to hold the WWE Speed Championship since the show premiered on X/Twitter this April. Following his win, Lee cut a brief promo thanking everyone who has supported him:

The focus on Speed will now shift back to the women’s division next week with the start of a number one contender’s tournament. The tournament will determine the first challenger for inaugural women’s WWE Speed Champion Candice LeRae.

Zelina Vega vs. Chelsea Green is premiering on Speed at noon Eastern time next Wednesday (November 27). Natalya vs. B-Fab, Katana Chance vs. Alba Fyre, and Michin vs. Ivy Nile are the other first-round matches that will be taking place in the weeks to come.

VIDEO: Ricochet drops WWE Speed title to Andrade

On Friday, Ricochet’s potential last WWE match premiered on social media.

A new episode of WWE Speed aired with Ricochet dropping the WWE Speed Championship to Andrade. The match, which was taped last week, ended with Andrade winning with 59 seconds left on the five-minute clock. Andrade becomes the second wrestler to hold the WWE Speed title since it was introduced. Ricochet was crowned the inaugural champion this April.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque posted a tweet congratulating Andrade on his victory and ushering in a new chapter for WWE Speed. The show, which premiered earlier this year, is broadcast exclusively on X/Twitter.

After the Ricochet vs. Andrade match was filmed, news broke over the weekend that Ricochet had given notice to WWE that he would be leaving when his contract expires this summer. There was then an angle on Monday’s Raw where Ricochet was demolished by Bron Breakker and taken out in an ambulance

The angle with Breakker could serve as Ricochet’s WWE write-off or provide a storyline for him if he changes his mind and returns to WWE.

“WWE was not wanting to lose [Ricochet], obviously, and the angle was done to give him a great reason to return if he had second thoughts,” Dave Meltzer wrote in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. “WWE had ideas for him both if he was staying as well as ways to write him out, but those in WWE confirmed to us that the belief there was he was leaving.”

Meltzer notes that, while nothing has been confirmed, there’s “a lot of expectations” that Ricochet is AEW bound.

VIDEO: Ricochet crowned inaugural WWE Speed Champion

The crowning of WWE’s newest champion aired on Friday afternoon.

Ricochet defeated Johnny Gargano to become the first WWE Speed Champion. The match, which was taped after SmackDown last Friday. was the finals of WWE’s tournament to crown the inaugural champion. Ricochet defeated Dragon Lee in the first round and JD McDonagh in the semifinals.

With this being the finals of the tournament, Ricochet vs. Gargano had a five-minute time limit — two minutes longer than the typical limit for WWE Speed matches. Ricochet won with 40 seconds left on the clock.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted about Ricochet’s title win:

Starting on WWE Speed next Wednesday, a tournament will begin to determine the first challenger for Ricochet’s championship. Apollo Crews vs. Ivar and Tyler Bate vs. Humberto are the first-round matches for the contender’s tournament.

This was a special Friday edition of WWE Speed. The show usually premieres on X (the former Twitter) at noon Eastern time on Wednesdays. WWE and X’s partnership for Speed is a two-year deal.

Levesque stated earlier this week that women’s matches will eventually be included on Speed:

It makes for an exciting challenge for the guys. It makes for an exciting challenge for eventually what will be the women as well. So far, it’s been spectacular. The talent have really embraced this and gotten into the challenge of it. It’s been exciting for them and our fans as well.

WWE Speed premiere date revealed, tournament will crown champion

WWE has revealed details on its upcoming new series, WWE Speed.

The company announced via video that a tournament will be held on Speed, which will air exclusively on X starting on April 3. Corey Graves explained in the video that each match will have a three-minute time limit, and the winner of the tournament will receive a new title, the WWE Speed Championship. The video emphasized the idea of speed, strength, and agility, and focusing on getting to the finish line before time runs out.

After filming a pilot for Speed in December, WWE officially announced the new show during the WrestleMania 40 press conference held in February. Over the last few months, matches for Speed have been taped before SmackDown.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that WWE and X’s agreement is a two-year deal, with new episodes slated to air every week on X. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
