Current longest-reigning World Champion wants ‘one more match’ with Asuka outside of WWE

Athena has nothing but praise for Asuka and holds her in high regard for the influence on her wrestling career. She expressed hope that they will share the ring one final time.

In an interview with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Athena relived her wrestling rivalry with Asuka. She recalled their first meeting at Shimmer Women’s Wrestling and then clashed in the NXT ring for the Women’s Championship.

“Oh, man. Like Asuka is one of those people, that’s a forever rival for me. Like when we were back on the indies, we actually ended up wrestling at Shimmer Women’s Wrestling. That’s where we met. We had one of the hardest hitting matches I think I’ve had in my career then, and then fast forward to WWE NXT for the NXT Women’s Championship. Asuka is my yin to my yang. I really hope she’s not stepping away. I’ve actually been trying to get a hold of her because I lost a whole bunch of people’s numbers when I switched my phone and everything.”

She referenced Asuka as a living legend that audiences still remain unaware of her capabilities and wrestling impact.

“But man, talk about someone who’s just the epitome of what legendary status is or what a living legend is. I, to some extent, don’t feel like people really understand how much she’s done for wrestling as a whole. Like from grinding on the indies to being like an independent contractor in Japan to getting signed to WWE. Not only that, like just excelling in WWE in every form and facet from match to match, but never changing who she was as a person, a character. I couldn’t be more proud, more happy for her. I hate her in that same breath, of course.”

Athena expressed interest in a final match with Asuka to conclude their rivalry out of respect for her legendary career. She emphasized how important competing against Asuka was in shaping her as a performer and wrestler.

“I also feel like I have to have one more match eventually and hope that this isn’t it. This isn’t the long goodbye, if you will. But like, Asuka’s one of those people that I wouldn’t be who I am as a performer, as an athlete, if she wasn’t in my life. If she wasn’t on the opposite side of the ring. I don’t think I would have gotten anything really if I didn’t have that experience with her.”

Asuka teased retirement after her WWE Backlash match against IYO SKY after a 22-year wrestling career. On the following edition of Raw, she bid farewell to SKY in a passing of the torch moment.

On the other hand, after Athena’s WWE release in 2021 she returned to the independent circuit before debuting on AEW. In December 2022 she captured the Women’s ROH Championship and continues to hold the title with her reign surpassing the 1250 day mark.

Title matches, last woman standing match part of two-week WWE NXT Revenge lineup

A two-week event will kick off next week with two title matches.

Tony D’Angelo will defend the NXT title next week at NXT Revenge week one on The CW against Ethan Page. They, along with Joe Hendry and Ricky Saints, scored the win in an eight-man tag team match against DarkState on Tuesday. Page pinned Saquon Shugars after pushing away D’Angelo to get the glory for his team.

After the match, D’Angelo laid him out with the dead to rights chokeslam. Robert Stone later made a title match between the two official for next week’s show, the first night of Revenge.

Also set for night one is Jacy Jayne getting her NXT Championship rematch against Lola Vice. As the new NXT Champion was celebrating in the ring, Jayne interrupted and demanded another shot. Stone came out and made the second title match official for next week.

In addition to the two title matches, week one of Revenge will see Jaida Parker face Kelani Jordan, EK Prosper facing Dorian Van Dux in another Speed tournament qualifier, and Hendry will hold a concert to discuss his future following his title loss.

Week two of Revenge will see Sol Ruca taking on Zaria in a Last Woman Standing match. The latter made it clear on Tuesday it wasn’t over between them, spearing Ruca during her match against Izzi Dame. In addition, the men’s Speed tournament finals will take place to crown a new champion and EVOLVE standout Kali Armstrong will make her debut.

NXT Women’s Championship not necessary for main roster move, believes Kelani Jordan

Kelani Jordan claims she is main roster ready regardless of whether she holds the NXT Women’s Championship at least once in her WWE career.

Jordan told Bully Ray on Busted Open Radio that she is prepared for the main roster call-up and the NXT Women’s Championship – whichever opportunity comes first.

“I would love to go to the main roster, I would love to be able to be on a bigger platform, but also be able to wrestle girls who are on that next level. I would love that, Raw, SmackDown, I’m ready. Of course, if the NXT Women’s Championship is in my future, that’s great, but if the main roster is next, I have my eyes on the US Championship, the Intercontinental (Championship).”

Jordan feels she does not need to win the NXT Women’s Championship to succeed on the main roster. She referenced Becky Lynch winning the title years after moving on from the NXT brand. She also highlighted a few notable talents who have made a name on Raw and SmackDown without ever having the title in their possession.

“I think you can jump over that championship cause we’ve seen girls do it before. Like even when Becky was in NXT, she didn’t win the championship, she actually when she came back and had the feud with Tiffany (Stratton) and Lyra and all of them is when she got the championship. But it’s also other superstars like greats who never won the NXT Women’s Championship and they’re prospering and thriving on the main roster.”

Jordan became the inaugural NXT Women’s North American Champion in June 2024. Last year she also captured the TNA Knockouts Title amidst the promotion’s crossover rivalry with NXT.

Jordan made her Royal Rumble debut at the Premium Live Event in January this year.

Two title matches confirmed for WWE NXT Houston

Two title matches are set for NXT’s show in Houston later this month.

At Vengeance Day, Jacy Jayne came out and cut a promo talking about her history of being Women’s Champion. Robert Stone cut her off and said this was about finding her next challengers. After both Zaria and Sol Ruca came out to stake their claim, Stone cut everyone off and announced a triple threat match for the title on March 17.

Later on backstage, Jayne was upset about the triple threat match as the rest of Fatal Influence conspired to take out Ruca before the championship match took place.

Fallon Henley also brought up that on the same show, she would be defending the Speed title against the winner of the finals set for this coming Tuesday’s NXT between Wren Sinclair and Thea Hail, both of whom picked up victories in the qualifying round.

WWE NXT (March 17)

  • NXT Women’s Championship: Jacy Jayne defends against Zaria and Sol Ruca
  • WWE Speed Championship: Fallon Henley defends against either Wren Sinclair or Thea Hail

Women’s title match part of next WWE NXT lineup

The NXT Women’s title will be on the line next week.

Zaria will challenge for the title after turning against Sol Ruca on this week’s NXT, allowing Jacy Jayne to hit the rolling encore in just seconds to retain the title. Later backstage, Zaria confronted Jayne and demanded a title match for next week, saying that if she didn’t grant the match, what happened to Sol would happen to her.

Ricky Saints has also promised an ‘Absolute Experience’ segment for next week’s show without providing any details, saying if Joe Hendry can have his concerts he could have something as well. The two are scheduled to meet for the NXT title at Vengeance Day next month.

The women’s Speed title tournament will continue, with Wren Sinclair taking on Nikkita Lyons. The winner will face Thea Hail, who defeated Blake Monroe to advance in the tournament this week after interference from Jaida Parker. Another match will have Hank, Tank, and Shiloh Hill take on Vanity Project after they had a brawl backstage.

Jacy Jayne wins Women’s Championship at WWE NXT Gold Rush

Jacy Jayne is once again NXT Women’s Champion.

Jayne regained the title Tuesday thanks to help from The Culling, who turned their back on Paxley. The end of the match saw Izzi Dame attempt to help Paxley by introducing a chair and later the NXT Women’s title into the match. Both times, Paxley refused to cheat in order to retain her title. After Jayne kicked out of a rollup, Paxley was sent to the floor.

When Paxley tried to get back into the ring, Shawn Spears and Niko Vance blocked her path. That was when Dame blindsided Paxley with a boot and threw her back in the ring. Jayne quickly took the opportunity to strike Paxley with the rolling encore to become a two-time NXT Women’s Champion.

The Culling had taken Paxley under their wing earlier this year after she was despondent over having no friend. During their association, situations repeatedly came up where it was questioned if The Culling had truly accepted Paxley or if they were just using her for their own gain.

Paxley held the title for only 23 days, defeating Jayne back at Halloween Havoc on October 25.

TNA wrestlers to compete on next week’s WWE NXT

Interpromotional matches are set for next week’s NXT.

Although this week’s show featured NXT wrestlers taking on the TNA roster, more interpromotional matches have been set for next week. Matt Cardona was seen in Ava’s office wanting a match against Briggs. It was then that Briggs entered Ava’s office as Cardona hid behind the door. Briggs demanded the match against Cardona for next week and Ava made it official.

At the end of this week’s show, the NXT General Manager congratulated Santino Marella on his success, while the TNA Director of Authority did the same. Ava announced that a battle royal next week would determine NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne’s challenger for Halloween Havoc, and extended an invitation for the TNA Knockouts roster to participate. Santino accepted the offer.

Meanwhile, Dr. Wagner Jr. was being interviewed about his recent confrontations with Ethan Page when Lexis King showed up, accusing him of being Tavion Heights based on a recent angle. Wagner walked away as Heights showed up, asking King why his name was coming out of his mouth. A match between King and Wagner was then made for next week.

WWE NXT (October 14):

  • Josh Briggs vs. Matt Cardona
  • El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Lexis King
  • Battle royal for Hallowen Havoc NXT Women’s title match, TNA Knockouts roster invited

In the opening match of Heatwave, Lola Vice defeated Kelani Jordan and Jaida Parker in a three-way match to become the new number one contender. Later in the show, it was announced that Vice would get her opportunity at No Mercy, which takes place on September 27 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Vice later met Jacy Jayne backstage after Jayne lost the TNA Knockouts title to Ash by Elegance despite never being pinned. After Sol Ruca and Zaria traded words with the rest of Fatal Influence, a six-woman tag team match was set up for Tuesday’s show.

Ava also announced at Heatwave that the Speed titles would be coming to NXT, and current champion Sol Ruca would be defending her title at No Mercy. When Sol asked who she would be defending against, Ava announced a tournament that would begin on the September 2 edition of WWE.

The tournament will have a representative from Raw or SmackDown, one from NXT, one from TNA, and another from AAA. The winner would then face Ruca at No Mercy.

Jacy Jayne wins WWE NXT Women’s Championship

Jacy Jayne has shocked the world.

In the main event of Tuesday’s NXT, Jayne stunned the NXT audience by defeating Stephanie Vaquer to win the NXT Women’s Championship for the first time. The finish had Vaquer drape herself on the ropes, holding on to Jayne’s arm. Fallon Henley interfered and delivered a kick to Vaquer that sent her to the floor while Jasmyn Nyx distracted the referee. Henley threw Vaquer back into the ring where Jayne connected with a discus punch, pinning Vaquer to win the title.

After the match, a stunned Mike Rome took a few seconds to analyze what had just happened before announcing Jayne as the victor. NXT cameras took shots of the stunned crowd in the audience as Fatal Influence celebrated in the ring.

Jayne got a title match after slapping Vaquer backstage during NXT Battleground on Sunday. During an interview that took place earlier on Tuesday, Fatal Influence continued teasing dissention between one another after Henley suggested she should gotten the shot because the last time the two met, Jayne lost. Jayne mentioned that it was Vaquer who defeated Henley to win the North American title earlier in the year.

Roxanne Perez issues NXT Women’s Championship challenge

After retaining at Stand & Deliver, NXT Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer looks to already have her next challenger.

WWE ran an angle where Roxanne Perez confronted Vaquer backstage after Saturday’s event, issuing the challenge for a title match. Vaquer responded to Perez’s challenge by telling NXT general manager Ava that she wants the match. A date for it has not been announced yet.

Vaquer remained champion by pinning Jaida Parker in a fatal four-way bout at today’s WrestleMania weekend NXT show. Giulia and Jordynne Grace were the other two competitors in the match.

It was Giulia who Vaquer defeated last month to win the NXT Women’s Championship. Vaquer was briefly a double champion before relinquishing the NXT Women’s North American title belt.

Perez is a two-time NXT Women’s Champion. She’s been rumored for a WWE main roster call-up but is still on NXT as of now.

On the Stand & Deliver pre-show, Perez was involved in a four-way elimination match for a WWE Women’s Tag Team title shot. She walked out on Cora Jade during the match, which led to them getting eliminated. Gigi Dolin & Tatum Paxley got the victory and will challenge for the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles on NXT in Las Vegas this Tuesday (April 22).

Perez said in her challenge that she was in the wrong spot at Stand & Deliver and is at her best when she’s a singles competitor. This would be the first-ever one-on-one match between Vaquer and Perez.

Stephanie Vaquer wins Women’s Championship at WWE NXT Roadblock

Stephanie Vaquer is now a double champion.

The NXT Women’s North American Champion defeated Giulia at NXT Roadblock to also become the NXT Women’s Champion for the first time. Inside the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, Vaquer pinned Giulia following three SSB back breakers to win the title. The show ended with Vaquer celebrating, holding both titles.

Giulia had held the NXT Women’s Championship for 63 days, defeating Roxanne Perez at NXT New Year’s Evil in January.

The build to the match to crown a double champion started on the February 25 edition of NXT. Giuila came out after Vaquer had successfully retained the North American title against Karmen Petrovic and challenged Vaquer to a title for title match. Vaquer agreed, setting up the match for Roadblock.

In recent weeks, former North American Champion Fallon Henley has been looking for answers from GM Ava on when she’ll be getting a rematch for the title. On this week’s NXT, Henley asked again only for Ricky Saints to interrupt, asking Ava an unrelated question.

Giulia wins Women’s title at WWE NXT New Year’s Evil

Giulia has won her first gold in WWE.

In the opening match of NXT New Year’s Evil in Los Angeles, Giulia kicked off the new year by defeating Roxanne Perez for the NXT Women’s title. This ends Perez’s 274 day reign with the title after defeating Lyra Valkyria at NXT Stand and Deliver last April.

The finish of Tuesday’s match had Cora Jade interfere, helping Perez back into the ring as both women were on the outside. Perez hit pop rocks and went for an armbar as the referee sent Jade to the back. Giulia cut off Perez and hit the second northern lights bomb of the match to win the championship.

Giulia made her debut for WWE back at No Mercy in September, directly confronting Perez. The two faced off on the CW premiere episode of NXT the following month, with Perez emerging as the winner. Giulia regained momentum after winning the NXT Iron Survivor Challenge at the Deadline premium live event last month, earning herself another shot at the NXT Women’s title.

Triple H & Shawn Michaels open WWE NXT CW premiere, reveal new title designs

Triple H & Shawn Michaels opened a new era of NXT with new title designs.

Shawn Michaels started this week’s NXT by saying they can’t have a new NXT without some new championship titles He then showed off new title belts for the NXT and NXT Women’s titles, which are similar to the old designs but with the new NXT logo. As he was about to finish his promo, Triple H made a surprise appearance, entering the ring as they both asked the crowd if they were ready.

The show opened on Tuesday featuring a new NXT black-and-silver logo with a brand-new opening video.

Tuesday’s new look for NXT is the second of WWE’s shows to get a makeover as WWE begins new television deals. Last month, SmackDown received new graphics and a new logo as it made its return to the USA Network.

Starting next week, Raw will move to two hours for the remainder of 2024 on the USA Network. On January 6, the show will leave cable television and the USA Network for Netflix.

Roxanne Perez vs. Thea Hail title match announced for WWE NXT Great American Bash

The WWE NXT Women’s Championship will be on the line at the Great American Bash two-night event.

NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez announced during this week’s episode that she will defend her title against Thea Hail at Great American Bash, scheduled for July 30 and August 6 as part of a two-night TV special.

NXT will air on SyFy both of those weeks, as USA Network coverage of the Olympics will preempt NXT on the network.

Hail and Perez engaged in a war of words that turned physical on Tuesday’s show, with Hail locking Perez in a submission before she was pulled off of the Women’s Champion.

Perez has held the NXT Women’s Championship since defeating Lyra Valkyria for the title at Stand & Deliver on WrestleMania weekend this past April. Perez has held the title for a combined 206 days as recognized by WWE across her two reigns with the title, good for the eighth-most combined days as NXT Women’s Champion.
