WWE Evolution review: Proceed with caution

Image: WWE

Apparently, no one proceeded with caution.

The main event of Sunday’s WWE Evolution was capped off with a surprise, at least to those in the arena. Naomi, who had lost to Jade Cargill earlier in the show, arrived at the end of an excellent main event between Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY. She quickly cashed in and pinned SKY to win the Women’s World title.

SKY and Ripley had an incredible main event, probably in the top three or four matches of the weekend including the ROH and AEW main events. They put on a clinic and the crowd, which was hot all night for everyone and everything, reacted big to all the nearfalls and big spots, including SKY leaping off a giant platform to the floor during what ended up being a very, very long referee bump.

On the one hand, I can understand people being upset about a match this good ending without a decisive finish. On the other hand, the crowd reacted big to the win and at the very least, something happened at the end of the show. I was expecting Ripley to go over here as I think she’s due for another run as World Champion, but Naomi winning pretty much ensures we’ll be getting a three-way match at SummerSlam. Which is fine, as if it’s anything near what I saw on Saturday it’ll be the highlight of that weekend.

Evolution was a fun show where nothing was bad and the opening and closing matches delivered. The crowd made the show better than it was on paper and it helped that everyone worked hard. Triple H in the post-show press conference seemed coy about making this a yearly event, but considering WWE is doing everything in its power to counterprogram AEW, something tells me a lot of shows will be greenlit, and that will almost certainly mean another Evolution.

The rest of the show:

  • The triple threat for the Women’s Intercontinental title that opened Evolution was excellent, exactly how a three-way match should be. It had your typical three-person finish where Bayley had Lyra Valkyria pinned only for Lynch to swoop in at the last minute. That finish is used a little too much now, but this was fine. I still feel the feud between these three isn’t done yet and with two SummerSlam shows to book in a few weeks, we will likely see another variation of this match.
  • Jacy Jayne kept the NXT Women’s Championship, pinning Jordynne Grace after Blake Monroe did the turn. I felt that Monroe wasn’t long as a face and would eventually lay out Grace, but I wasn’t expecting it on this show until Monroe agreed to be in Grace’s corner during a pre-show angle. I thought Grace was winning here as a title match between her and Monroe makes sense, but I guess they’re doing it without the title. Don’t feel anything about Jayne being the champion currently.
  • The Women’s Tag Team title match was also helped by the crowd. I don’t know why but people desperately wanted to like Charlotte here and hyped up everything that she did, it was kind of amazing. She didn’t win, but hey, at least she got cheered. Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez retained the titles and will likely be champions for a while as they continue to build their relationship until the inevitable Liv Morgan return.
  • Tiffany Stratton and Trish Stratus felt like a match rushed for time. This was good, but felt too short compared to other matches on the card. Stratus is still very good and looked better than Stratton here. The thing with Stratton is that she got really over as a heel in NXT, but once she turned face, or whatever this is, she just seems off and as champion isn’t really feeling like the standard bearer for her brand.
  • Jade Cargill emerged victorious in the falls count anywhere match between herself and Naomi. Standard weapons match. Not sure why Bianca Belair was here as she really didn’t get involved at all. This was another match where Naomi was in control for most of the match, only for Cargill to win the win at the last minute. I guess they had to keep Naomi strong as she was going to end the show winning, but weird to book Cargill in that manner heading into a big match at SummerSlam.
  • Stephanie Vaquer is going to Paris, last eliminating Lash Legend to win the number one contender’s battle royal to earn a future title match. It was a well-booked, no frills battle royal with nothing in terms of surprises, which I thought was a surprise within itself. They pushed Legend really strong here, to the point where its obvious whhen she gets called up she’ll be pushed as a big star. She’s way better than she was when she started TV but I feel needs a run as champion before being called up. With the Paris show not taking place until the end of August, there’s plenty of time to build around Vaquer, who already seems super over with the crowd.

Triple H on WWE Evolution being a yearly show: ‘We shall see’

Triple H kept things open regarding the future of WWE Evolution.

In the very last question of the WWE Evolution post-show press conference, Emily May asked the CCO of WWE if Evolution would become a yearly show moving forward. Triple H’s answer wasn’t a yes or a no, but a we shall see.

“I don’t want to say it’s yearly, it’s not yearly. I think we see what that demand is for it,” he said. “Because as the demand for the women grows across the board every day, it becomes less about having their own show and more about…the equality, it’s all there. They don’t have to have their show to be in the spotlight. But if it works, we’ll definitely go down that road again. It’s a ‘we shall see.’

He argued that fans are insprired by women’s wrestlers enough that he doesn’t know if they need to be focused on for one particular night.

“I don’t know if it has to be a particular night for them to be inspired by the women, because I think the women do that every single Monday, Tuesday, Friday, whenever we have a PLE, wherever we’re having a Saturday Night’s Main Event. They’re role models, they’re inspiring people, they’re changing their lives. That sounds dramatic to some degree, but that is the kind of thing they do.”

Triple H, Naomi, and Stephanie Vaquer all took questions from the media during the post-show. Here are the other highlights:

Triple H

  • He first brought up Goldberg’s final match on Saturday Night’s Main Event and praised him for bringing great intensity and doing a great job. Said he has nothing but respect for him as a performer and a human being.
  • Says he questioned doing another Evolution show as he thought women were already achieving goals in the WWE like headlining shows, but decided to move forward and was really excited for it. He wanted to focus on the present and future of the product, not have it be a nostalgia show.
  • Regarding Seth Rollins, his injury status is inconclusive, but it doesn’t look good. He will be going to Birmingham on Monday for an MRI and will see where they go from there. He did say Rollins was at the show in crutches.
  • Said that Jelly Roll asked to come to the Performance Center and train. He’s been in the ring “every single day” going at it. Says he’s dedicated to it, he’s “all in.”

Stephanie Vaquer

  • It means a lot for her to be where she is at now. She worked hard to learn a new style and language. She loves a challenge, says she’s come here to be the best. Soon she will be champion.
  • When asked what it meant for someone who spoke English as a second language to make it in WWE, she said she will keep working hard. She wants to show that nobody can say “you can’t do that,” so she’ll continue to work hard as it’s important for her.

Naomi

  • When she came back she wanted to be better and winning the World title represents that.
  • During her time away she learned to just keep going. She’s watched so many women before her and taken some of their struggles along the way, which got her to where she is now.
  • When asked about her entrance with the words ‘underrated’ and ‘unappreciated,” Naomi said that there are moments in life where we don’t feel appreciated or loved, and sometimes you have to adjust. She said that for years everyone saw her as a good girl, a good character, a good babyface and eventually, everyone has a breaking point.
  • She also reacted to her colleagues’ reaction to her title win, saying she felt the love backstage, seeing all the new faces and seeing them get emotional, it’s really cool. But weaving into her new persona, she then declared none of them would be getting title shots.

Special guest referee added to WWE Evolution match

Jade Cargill and Naomi’s no holds barred match at WWE Evolution will have a special guest referee.

After a brawl between Cargill and Naomi took place at Saturday Night’s Main Event tonight, it was announced that Bianca Belair will referee their grudge match at Evolution. The three were previously aligned as a trio before Naomi turned heel by attacking Cargill. Belair being the referee for Evolution should reveal whether her loyalties lie with Cargill or Naomi.

Belair is currently sidelined with a finger injury that she suffered in her triple threat match against IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 41, though she did appear on SmackDown in May for an angle with Naomi and Cargill.

Both Cargill and Naomi are currently title contenders in the SmackDown women’s division. As the Queen of the Ring winner, Cargill will challenge either Tiffany Stratton or Trish Stratus for the WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam. Naomi holds the women’s Money in the Bank briefcase and could cash it in for a title shot whenever she wants.

Kelly Kelly says she turned down invitation to sit in crowd at WWE Evolution

Kelly Kelly is claiming that she won’t be among the women’s division legends attending WWE Evolution this weekend.

Responding to a fan on social media today, Kelly Kelly said she turned down an offer from WWE to sit in the crowd at the all-women’s show. She was honored to receive the invitation but didn’t feel like it was the right way to return.

“I was So honored to be invited to Evolution II, to sit in the crowd it just didn’t feel like the right way to come back,” she wrote. “I’ll always be proud to have been part of the first, my heart is with every woman in that ring tomorrow. I’ll be back when the time’s right.”

Kelly Kelly was part of the inaugural Evolution 2018 card as a battle royal entrant. This year’s Evolution features another battle royal that figures to include some surprise entrants. The winner receives a women’s title shot next month at Clash in Paris.

Nikki Bella is among the confirmed participants for the battle royal at Sunday’s PLE, which is being held at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

A former Divas Champion, Kelly Kelly (real name Barbie Blank) was originally with WWE from 2006-2012 and has been back for occasional appearances in recent years, most recently taking part in the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble. She said last year that she would be open to competing again so that her twin children could have the chance to see their mother wrestler.

Stephanie McMahon unveils opening video for WWE Evolution

The all-women’s event is taking place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, marking the first time Evolution has been held since the inaugural edition in 2018. The opening video — set to “Rise” by Katy Perry — was unveiled by Stephanie McMahon on social media today. It features a trio of young girls being inspired by watching current WWE wrestlers and legends.

“Finally…this Sunday is the return of @WWE EVOLUTION!,” Stephanie tweeted. “Watch some of the most talented female athletes in the world as they take their place in history once again! Together, we all RISE! #WWEEvolution”

Evolution is one of three WWE events happening in Atlanta this weekend, with NXT Great American Bash and Saturday Night’s Main Event both happening the day prior. Evolution will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. It’s streaming live on Peacock in the United States and Netflix elsewhere.

Lilian Garcia set for WWE Evolution ring announcing role

Like at the inaugural event seven years ago, Lilian Garcia will have a role handling ring announcing duties for Evolution 2.

Garcia made an Instagram post today revealing that she’ll be a ring announcer for WWE Evolution this Sunday night. She’ll also be the ring announcer for Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend. Both shows are being held at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

“THIS IS IT!!! @WWE EVOLUTION happening this Sunday!!! I was fortunate enough to be the announcer the 1st ever Evolution so now to be able to announce the 2nd one as well and continue to celebrate the progression of where this industry has evolved to along side these incredible women is such an honor!!!,” Garcia wrote alongside a clip of her working out in the gym.

“It all starts with hard work! …for ALL of us!! We dedicate hours to our craft. It’s not easy but it’s definitely worth it!!”

Garcia no longer has a full-time position on either Raw or SmackDown but is still with WWE as the ring announcer for Saturday Night’s Main Event, along with doing ring announcing for other select events like Worlds Collide and Evolution.

Here is everything that’s been announced for Evolution:

Nikki Bella: WWE comeback won’t be complete until Bella Twins reunite

To promote WWE Evolution, Nikki Bella stopped by “Live with Kelly and Mark” for an appearance on Tuesday morning.

Bella will return to the ring when she competes in the Evolution Battle Royal this Sunday (July 13). So far in her return to WWE, Nikki has been solo without her twin sister Brie by her side. But Nikki told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos this morning that this return to WWE will only be complete once the Bellas reunite.

“Well, she better join me. I mean, it’s the only way I sometimes feel like I can win is if I have her,” Nikki responded when asked if Brie will join her in the ring. “The fans are speaking really loudly — our Bella Army — they really want Brie back. And I really want her back. I feel like this comeback won’t be complete until the Bella Twins are together. So, it’ll be iconic.”

TMZ Sports reported in June that Brie was in talks for a WWE return, though Brie claimed that she had not been contacted by the promotion.

Brie has not wrestled since appearing as an entrant in the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble. Nikki returned to WWE earlier this year as a Rumble entrant and is now back for a more extended run. The twin sisters are already WWE Hall of Famers, having been inducted as part of the class of 2020.

A feud between Nikki Bella and Liv Morgan was originally the plan for Evolution. It started to play out on television before Morgan suffered a dislocated shoulder, forcing her out of action for months due to the injury requiring surgery.

The Evolution Battle Royal winner earns a women’s championship shot next month at WWE Clash in Paris.

“I’m obsessed with Paris,” Nikki said during today’s talk show appearance. “And so to have a championship match at a really big PLE, it would just be incredible. So, I’ve got to win.”

State Farm Arena in Atlanta is hosting Evolution on Sunday. It’s the first time the all-women’s event has taken place since 2018, when Nikki Bella headlined the inaugural show in a loss to Ronda Rousey.

Nikki Bella announced for WWE Evolution battle royal

The first participants for Sunday’s battle royal at WWE Evolution have been announced, and they include Hall of Famer Nikki Bella.

WWE Hall of Famer Bella was the first participant revealed for the match during a vignette on Monday’s Raw:

Later in the show, Stephanie Vaquer was confirmed as an entrant in another vignette. Maxxie Dupri and Natalya were also confirmed for the match during an interview segment on the show, along with Nia Jax, and Ivy Nile:

The winner of the Evolution battle royal will earn a championship match at Clash in Paris set for Sunday, August 31.

Sane defeated Tag champ Roxanne Perez in singles competition on Monday’s show, then was saved by former Kabuki Warriors tag partner Asuka in the aftermath. Asuka and Sane were officially added to the Evolution match in a backstage segment with Raw GM Adam Pearce later in the episode.

Ruca and Zaria were announced as the NXT representatives in the contest joining Asuka and Sane, and SmackDown team Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss in challenging Perez and Raquel Rodriguez for the titles.

Cargill and Bianca Belair held the Women’s Tag titles as a unit from August to December 2024. An injury storyline where a mystery attacked took out Cargill led to Belair choosing Naomi as her new tag partner, with Naomi assuming Cargill’s role as Tag champ. It was later revealed in storyline that Naomi was Cargill’s attacker.

Naomi and Cargill faced one another previously at WrestleMania 41 night one on April 19 of this year, with Cargill winning.

During an in-ring promo with Queen of the Ring winner Jade Cargill, Stratton revealed that she had been granted the opportunity to choose her challenger at Evolution and had chosen Stratus. Cargill will face the winner at SummerSlam set for August 2 and August 3.

Stratus and Stratton teamed at the Elimination Chamber event in Stratus’s hometown of Toronto earlier this year.

Mercedes Mone comments on WWE Evolution 2: ‘It’s about time’

AEW’s TBS Champion Mercedes Mone has thoughts on WWE Evolution 2, the upcoming PLE set for July 13.

In a clip from her subscriber-only chat on her Instagram leaked to social media, Mone spoke on the all-women’s premium live event concept:

“Any thoughts about Evolution 2? I think it’s about time. They waited way too long to have an all-women’s pay-per-view, but I love and will always support and be a huge advocate for women’s wrestling. So, I’m excited for that, for the women that get to perform on that.”

Mone often holds subscriber-only live streams on her Instagram account as part of the $9.99 per month subscription fee.

In another leaked clip, Mone spoke about her short AEW feud with Britt Baker in response to a fan wanting to see more of their rivalry:

“Well, if the D.M.D. wants a back adjustment, she knows where to find me. In my locker room. But make sure you knock on the door first before entering or I’m gonna call security and then the cops.”
