Two title matches official for WWE NXT Vengeance Day

Two title matches are official for next month’s Vengeance Day event in Tennessee.

The end of Tuesday’s show saw Roxanne Perez win a battle royal to become the new number one contender for Lyra Valkyria’s NXT Women’s Championship. Earlier in the show, Ilja Dragunov and Trick Williams confirmed their NXT Championship match for February 4 after it was originally set to take place at New Year’s Evil.

The final four participants in the battle royal consisted of Perez, Kelani Jordan, Kiana James, and Fallon Henley. The match was then turned into a fatal four-way with Perez pinning Jordan to become the new number one contender. A contract signing will take place on next week’s NXT between Perez and champion Lyra Valkyria.

Dragunov resurfaced on Tuesday and told Williams that their NXT Championship match was on for Vengeance Day. This upset Carmelo Hayes, who pointed out that he and Williams are in the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, and the finals are at Vengeance Day. Williams later suggested that he could work both matches.

Also on the show, Dragon Lee challenged Oba Femi to a rematch for the North American Championship. Femi, who rejected a match against Lee right then and there, said that he would take the match for Vengeance Day under consideration.

Valkyria then got a text message from Li inviting her to a warrior’s tea ceremony for this coming Tuesday’s show.

On last week’s NXT, Li came out as Valkyria was talking about winning the NXT Women’s Championship from Becky Lynch, demanding she get a title match. The two ended up having to be separated by security. Li ended up taking out one of the security guards with her spinning roundhouse kick.

Li defeated Indi Hartwell on Monday’s Raw, with the referee stopping the match after Hartwell was taken out by one of Li’s kicks. Becky Lynch, who had been taken out the week prior, made her return and announced that she would face Li on next week’s Raw.

Lynch is currently out of action after successfully defending the title at NXT No Mercy this past Saturday, defeating Tiffany Stratton in an Extreme Rules match. However, Lynch escaped. Stratton then walked right into a manhandle slam by Lynch, pinning Stratton to earn her first NXT Women’s Championship.

The build to the match began several weeks ago on NXT, when Stratton mentioned Lynch in a list of names that had been former champions. Stratton in a later segment apologized for saying that Lynch was a former champion. After Lynch addressed the situation on Twitter, Stratton started to appear in the crowd during Lynch’s matches on Raw before confronting Lynch at WWE Payback, apologizing in person.

Indi Hartwell relinquishes Women’s Championship on WWE NXT

A tournament to crown a new NXT Women’s Champion will take place starting on next week’s NXT.

Indi Hartwell came out during the final segment of NXT this week and announced that starting next week, a tournament will begin that will crown a new NXT Women’s Champion at Battleground on May 28. Hartwell had been drafted to Raw on last week’s SmackDown.

After she placed the Women’s Championship on the ground, she wondered who would help her out of the ring, mentioning earlier in the promo that she had suffered an ankle sprain during last week’s NXT Women’s title match. It was then that Dexter Lumis appeared under the ring. Hartwell was carried away by Lumis as Tiffany Stratton and Cora Jade grabbed the NXT Women’s Championship in the ring. The show ended with the NXT women’s roster brawling over the championship.

Hartwell held the championship for 31 days, winning the championship in a ladder match at NXT Stand & Deliver last month. Other participants in the match included Roxanne Perez, Lyra Valkyria, Stratton, Zoey Stark, and Gigi Dolin.

Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre retained the NXT Women’s Tag Team titles over Katana Chance and Kayden Carter on Tuesday’s NXT. They indicated they would be taking the titles to SmackDown, where they were drafted as part of the 2023 WWE Draft.

On Tuesday’s NXT, Roxanne Perez had defeated Zoey Stark when Indi Hartwell came out and offered Perez a shot at the championship. Perez agreed, but Tiffany Stratton then came out and complained about not getting the title shot. Hartwell eventually agreed to a three-way match for next week.

Bron Breakker came out on Tuesday and speared Odyssey Jones. He started running down Chase U, calling Andre Chase a clown. Duke Hudson came in through the crowd and stood up for Chase. Breakker said he would take care of Chase next week.

Brooks Jensen, with a new look, ran down Josh Briggs in Kiana James’ office when Briggs attempted to mend things with Jensen. Later, in Fallon Henley’s bar, Jensen and James continued to run down Henley and Briggs, leading to the challenge for a mixed tag team match for next week’s show.

Cora Jade will meet Lyra Valkyria after Valkyria appeared following Jade’s match against Gigi Dolin, challenging Jade to a match. Meanwhile, Tony D’Angelo and Stacks came up with the idea to challenge Pretty Deadly to a Trunk match. Last week on social media, the NXT Anonymous Twitter account showed a video of Stacks and D’Angelo jumping Pretty Deadly and putting Kit Wilson into a trunk before speeding off.

Making her return from injury at the start of 2023, Stratton has picked up wins since her return, defeating the likes of Indi Hartwell and Thea Hail. She had been out of action since last August after losing a Lights Out match against Wendy Choo.
