NJPW Resurgence notes: New Strong Tag champions, Zack Sabre Jr., Bullet Club

Notes on new champions, the return of the Good Brothers, and a draw in the co-main event of NJPW Resurgence.

The World Class Wrecking Crew (Jorel Nelson & Royce Isaccs) lost the Strong Tag Team titles to TJP and Templario when TJP countered with an inside cradle on Nelson to score the win. WCWC had won the titles back in December, defeating Grizzled Young Veterans.

Immediately following that was the NJPW return of The Good Brothers, Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows, as they teamed with The Young Bucks to defeat the Bullet Club War Dogs of Clark Connors, David Finlay, Gabe Kidd, and Gedo. After the match, the original members of the Bullet Club attempted to make peace with the current members by throwing out the wolfpac sign, but the War Dogs performed the gesture, but to themselves as they walked away.

The IWGP World title match in the co-main event between champion Hirooki Goto and challenger Zack Sabre Jr. ended in controversy as both men’s shoulders were pinned to the match, which ended with no winner. After the match, Sabre attacked the referee and got in Goto’s face, slapping him before making his exit.

Goto is now expected to defend the title against Shingo Takagi at Dominion, which takes place on June 15 in Osaka-jo Hall.

World Class Wrecking Crew win NJPW Strong Tag titles at Strong Style Evolved

World Class Wrecking Crew are now champions.

Jorel Nelson & Royce Issacs defeated the Grizzled Young Veterans at Strong Style Evolved on Sunday to win the titles for the first time. The finish came when Issacs rolled up James Drake while Issacs had Zack Gibson tied up on the outside.

After the match, Rocky Romero came out and officially challenged them to a title match at Battle in the Valley on January 11 in San Jose, saying former Roppongi 3K member YOH would be teaming with him. Nelson & Issacs responded by attacking Romero, with Issacs laying him out with a German Suplex.

The Grizzled Young Veterans only held the titles for a little over a month, defeating TMDK to win the titles for the first time at Fighting Spirit Unleashed.

Two other title matches took place at Strong Style Evolved. Gabe Kidd successfully defended the Strong Openweight title against Ryohei Oiwa. Mercedes Mone will defend the Strong Women’s Championship against Hazuki in the main event.

Grizzled Young Vets win Strong Tag Team titles at NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed

The Grizzled Young Vets are new champions.

James Drake and Zack Gibson defeated TMDK (Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls) to capture the titles Friday at NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed. GYV won the titles after Haste was choked out by a towel and was given the high low for the win.

TMDK had held the titles since June, when they defeated Bishimon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI), Chase Owens & KENTA, and Hikuleo & El Phantasmo at Dominion to capture both the Strong titles and the IWGP Tag Team titles. They lost the former titles only days ago at Power Struggle, where the United Empire (Great-O-Khan and Henare) defeated them to win the titles.

GYV recently made their AEW debut back in April shortly following a run in TNA. Since then, the team has mainly worked on AEW Collision and Ring of Honor. They also participated in a number one contenders match at NJPW Capital Collision in August, losing to Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii in a three-way match that also involved Bad Dude Tito and Robbie Eagles.

Strong Tag Team title match set for NJPW Royal Quest IV

The next challengers for the New Japan Strong Tag Team titles have been set.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii won a three-way tag team match to open Friday’s NJPW Capital Collision event in Washington DC. They defeated TMDK’s Bad Dude Tito & Robbie Eagles and The Grizzled Young Veterans after the duo isolated Tito, allowing Tanahashi to hit the high fly flow for the win.

Later in the show, champions Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls retained the titles, defeating CMLL’s Hechicero and Virus. After the match, the new number one contenders came to the ring. Tanahashi announced that they wanted their tag team title match at Royal Quest on October 20 in London, and as the president of NJPW, he can make it official. TMDK ended up accepting their challenge.

TMDK have held the titles since June 9, when they defeated Kenta & Chase Owens and Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) at Dominion to win both the NJPW Strong and IWGP Tag Team titles.
