Donovan Dijak revisited the 2019 online feud with Kenny Omega. The dispute arose over Omega’s remarks on AEW focusing on featuring real talents unlike NXT’s developmental wrestlers on Being The Elite Vlog.
In an interview with Fightful’s In The Weeds Podcast, Dijak revisited the tension at the Performance Center during the time. He revealed that a few coaches were supportive of him standing up for NXT. Fast forward to now, he still perceives Omega as one of the best wrestlers in the industry.
“A handful of coaches at the PC, said that they liked that I was sticking up for us, cause that’s just kind of how I felt in that moment. When I go back, I don’t even remember what article I was talking, for those of you who aren’t familiar, there was some sort of article I think with the benefit of hindsight, he was probably in character when he was doing this, but I don’t know. It was a very volatile time and he said something effective, like everybody on the NXT roster like would be a midcarder in AEW or something like that and again I’m paraphrasing, obviously, that’s offensive to me because I’m on the NXT roster, so I took a jab at him.”
“I doubt he took it personally. Maybe he did. I don’t know if he meant his thing personally. Maybe he did. I don’t know. I’ve never spoken to him since, and we only had two interactions before that. It was a time when people were saying all sorts of stuff about the other ones. In my youth, I was the kind of person who enjoyed stoking the flames, so to speak. I had no issue with it. I’ve been on record many, many times saying that I think Kenny Omega is one of the best wrestlers in the world. I can’t say that enough,” said Dijak.
Dijak further added that while he felt his retaliation was relevant, many of the current AEW stars are former NXT talents.
“My anger was about the attack that was happening to us. Ironically, now, pretty much everybody on the roster, on the black and gold roster, is on AEW or has been on AEW at some point. So, you know, I’m sure nobody actually cares. But, you know, like everything else in pro wrestling, you just kind of take something that has semblances of reality and you go off with it. But, you know, that’s just kind of the nature of how it was going back then.”
AEW premiered Dynamite as a weekly series in 2019 shortly after the promotion was launched, and it instantly clashed with NXT which also aired on Wednesdays.
Dijak was released by WWE in 2024 after a seven year stint with the company. Since then he has been competing across the indies, most notably MLW, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre and WXM.

WWE is promoting John Cena vs. Randy Orton at Backlash with the tagline “One Last Time.” The match is Cena’s first Undisputed WWE Championship defense of his retirement tour, which will conclude in December 2025.
At the end of the day, when he turned heel—like the [nWo] storyline, like Eric [Bischoff] said—we set it up, we set up, we set up, then we delivered. And then not only did we deliver, we rolled out with me, Hall and Nash. And that story kept snowballing and snowballing, and we kept getting more evil and evil. And so for me, watching that story with John Cena, when The Rock did the throat thing, cut his throat, and John Cena turned heel, I expected more of the same.
And then John Cena came out and there was no Rock, and I just got disconnected at that point, ’cause I was expecting the characters to keep rolling out like we did. So I know everybody’s got movies and obligations and stuff, but it didn’t feel like that big tidal wave coming at you. Like when the nWo took over, man, I even hate to say the word, we just cleaned house and beat everybody’s ass, and we just killed it. All the babyfaces were crying and complaining, and it got really ugly. We were so powerful with that trio.
It’s Paul Heyman. He’s my favorite, and he’s been doing this at such a high level for so long. What he’s doing now is the best stuff in wrestling. He’s putting food on the table for a lot of people in WWE.
Paul Heyman, he’s magic. He makes every part of what he’s doing so meaningful. That’s what I tried to do, too–if they were going to paint me yellow, then I brought the paint. Paul is the same way–you have to watch to see what he’s going to do next. He’s a genius.

Busted Open and Screen Rant have interviews with Zelina Vega. After winning the WWE Women’s United States title last Friday, Vega told Busted Open that – while in New York – she’s going to the 9/11 Memorial so she can place single’s gold on her late father Michael Trinidad’s name:
I am going to the 9/11 Memorial and finally getting to put single’s gold on my dad’s name at the memorial. So I’m very, very excited to finally do that. And, I mean, the thing is, it doesn’t mean that the journey is over in that sense because I still – there’s always a part of you that’s like, ‘I want the World title.’ I do. And I think if anything, this inspires me to show people who I am as a champion. And you kind of have a duty to show them how you can rock with that title too.
So it’s nice to be able to finally just do this and have that moment because I’ve wanted it for so, so long.

TNT Champion Adam Cole told Comicbook.com that Will Ospreay and Kevin Knight are two of the people he really wants to face in AEW.
Cole praised the work Ricochet is doing as a heel:
Unbelievable. I mean, again, when you look at Ricochet, anyone who’s seen Ricochet wrestle, he’s maybe the best athlete I’ve ever seen. Just like an absolute freak of nature. We jokingly in the locker room – we call him an alien. Like, he’s not even a real person. He’s not even a human being. The things he can do [are] just absolutely unbelievable.
Clearly one of the best, one of the most athletically gifted guys in the entire world, but getting to see this different side of Ricochet has been so much fun because he’s showing the world what he can bring to the table. Maybe people thought, ‘Oh, ok, cool. He can do all these really, really cool athletic things, and that’s awesome, and we really love that.’ But now he’s showing what a great character he can be. The timing that he has. His aura right now is absolutely unbelievable. So, yeah, Ricochet’s work has been absolutely incredible to watch. It’s been super, super fun. And I’ll tell you what, I may be a good guy, but I’m liking this new side of Ricochet. I am.

TNA announced that we’ll hear from Steve Maclin on this Thursday’s live episode of Impact following his successful International title defense against Eric Young at Rebellion.
MLW has announced a change to one of its matches planned for Slaughterhouse 2024.
After announcing yesterday that Donovan Dijak vs. TJP would be taking place at the event, MLW shared an update today revealing that it will now be Dijak vs. Trevor Lee at Slaughterhouse. The show is taking place from The Coliseum in St. Petersburg, Florida on October 4 and will air for free live on MLW’s YouTube channel.
“In a shocking twist ahead of MLW Slaughterhouse on October 4 at the Coliseum, Trevor Lee has stepped up to face the unstoppable force known as Donovan Dijak. Following TJP’s unexpected withdrawal from the match, MLW’s roster was notified of an open contract to fight Dijak,” the promotion wrote. “Wasting no time, a fearless Trevor Lee raced to sign his name, setting the stage for an electrifying debut.”
Dijak and Lee both departed WWE earlier this year. Dijak left the company in June when his contract was not renewed, while Lee (formerly known as Cameron Grimes) was released by WWE back in April.
Lee is making his MLW debut at Slaughterhouse. Dijak arrived in the promotion last month at MLW Summer of the Beasts.
Here’s the updated card for Slaughterhouse:
MLW Slaughterhouse 2024 (Friday, October 4) —
MLW World Heavyweight Champion Satoshi Kojima defends against Ultimo Guerrero
MLW Tag Team Champions Minoru Suzuki & Ikuro Kwon defend against Bomaye Fight Club (Alex Kane & Mr. Thomas)
Weapons of Mass Destruction match: Mads Krule Krugger vs. AKIRA
Former WWE wrestler Donovan Dijak is set for his first MLW match.
Dijak will make his MLW in-ring debut at Fightland 2024, facing off against Timothy Thatcher. The show is being held at Center Stage in Atlanta on Saturday, September 14 and will stream live on MLW’s YouTube channel for free.
Last week, Dijak arrived in MLW by disrupting a scramble match between Jimmy Lloyd, LSG, Little Guido, and Nolo Kitano. He laid out everyone in the match and then cut a promo saying his aim is to become the next MLW World Heavyweight Champion. The belt is currently held by Satoshi Kojima. Dijak also mentioned Thatcher, Matt Riddle, and Minoru Suzuki as targets.
The 37-year-old Dijak is a free agent after departing WWE this June when his contract was not renewed by the company. On June 27, Dijak posted a statement saying he tried to negotiate with WWE, but they never made him an offer. He was informed at the “eleventh hour” that WWE would not be renewing his contract.
Mister Saint Laurent is Dijak’s manager in MLW.
Here’s the updated card for Fightland:
MLW World Heavyweight Champion Satoshi Kojima defends against Mads Krugger
Opera Cup finals: TBA vs. TBA
Opera Cup semifinal match: KENTA vs. TJP
Opera Cup semifinal match: Mistico vs. Bad Dude Tito
Donovan Dijak vs. Timothy Thatcher
The Andersons (Brock Anderson & CW Anderson) vs. Bomaye Fight Club (Alex Kane & Mr. Thomas)
Whether Dijak ends up joining the promotion remains to be seen, but Tony Khan has been made aware of his interest in AEW.
Dijak was backstage at Forbidden Door over the weekend after departing WWE when his contract expired on June 28. In an interview with Forbes, Dijak explained that his representatives at Paragon Talent Group arranged for him to be backstage at the show. Dijak said his interest in being part of AEW has been made known to Khan and — if nothing else — a “reciprocal respect” exists between the two.
“Nobody. I showed up uninvited (laughs),” Dijak joked when asked who invited him to Forbidden Door. “No, Mojo [Rawley] and Steve [Kaye] both arranged that for me. They have great connections. Steve was there with me, so he brought me along, brought me in. I don’t know if anything needs to be approved by Tony [Khan] specifically or if they just kind of have people going in and out. But I know that Tony has been made aware of my interest, and I know that there’s reciprocal respect if nothing else.”
Last week, Dijak posted a letter to social media announcing that WWE had decided not to renew his contract. Dijak wrote that he had attempted to negotiate with WWE, but the company “stonewalled” him and never made a single offer. At the eleventh hour, Dijak was told his deal would not be renewed.
In the 2024 WWE Draft, Dijak was called up from NXT but never wrestled on Raw after joining the show’s roster. His final match for the company took place on WWE Speed.
Dijak made his first post-WWE appearance at a show for Blitzkrieg Pro last weekend and will have his first post-WWE match for Beyond Wrestling tonight (July 4). He’s back to going by “Donovan Dijak,” which is the name he previously used on the indies and in Ring of Honor.
On the Fourth of July, Dijak will wrestle his first match since departing WWE.
Beyond Wrestling has announced that Dijak will return to the promotion at Americanrana 2024 in Worcester, Massachusetts this Thursday. He’s facing Aaron Rourke at the event. It’s the first time Dijak has wrestled for Beyond since 2017.
Dijak posted a letter on social media last week revealing that he would be departing WWE when his contract expired on June 28. In the letter, Dijak said WWE “stonewalled” him during attempted contract negotiations, never making a single offer. He was informed at the eleventh hour that his contract would not be renewed.
Despite being called up in the 2024 WWE Draft, Dijak never wrestled on Raw after joining the show’s roster. He had one match on Main Event and one match on WWE Speed after the draft. Dijak said there had been plans for him to feud for the NXT Championship, but he was called up to Raw instead.
Beyond Wrestling was one of Dijak’s home promotions on the Northeast indies before he signed with WWE. He’s back to using “Donovan Dijak” as his wrestling name, which is the name he previously went by on the indies and in Ring of Honor.
Americanrana 2024 is taking place from White Eagle hall in Worcester.
Dijak’s post-WWE career has officially begun as he made a surprise appearance for New England indie promotion Blitzkrieg Pro on Saturday night.
Moments after CPA had won the company’s Bedlam title in their main event, he was celebrating with several members of the roster when a tall man dressed in black with a mask joined in on the fun. However, no one seemed to know who he was until he revealed himself and laid everyone out including the new champion, completing his attack by hitting a Feast Your Eyes and later looking at the title belt.
Afterward, he cut a two-minute promo that was not on the IWTV on demand airing:
AEW head Tony Khan spoke to the media for an hour Thursday to help hype Forbidden Door, addressing questions about potential free agents, the status of Britt Baker, and a positive note about Sunday’s live gate number.
Asked about his interest in free agent-to-be Dijak and current free agent Becky Lynch, Khan joked that he wouldn’t be doing any negotiation on a media call. He never addressed either directly, but remembered that he told TBS people in 2018 that free agency in wrestling has never got back to the level as it did in the 90s. He thinks the movement between groups has been great for both fans and the business before putting over his recent acquisitions of Mercedes Mone, Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada.
While talking about injuries and getting back to full strength injury-wise, Khan said Britt Baker “could be returning soon” after being out with an injury. He also mentioned Kenny Omega, Adam Cole and Jamie Hayter as those he is excited to get back and bring the company to full strength.
He also said Sunday’s live gate is approaching $1 million and 10,000 tickets sold which would be the third time in the event’s young history it has hit that financial mark.
To close the call, Khan made some football analogies in saying they are close (in the “red zone”) to making their new media rights deal.
The 37-year-old revealed on Thursday that his WWE contract is set to expire tomorrow and the company has informed him it will not be renewed.
Dijak wrote:
“Here’s the truth, WWE never negotiated with me. We attempted to negotiate and they stonewalled us. They never made me a single offer, then they informed me they would not renew my contract at the eleventh hour. 2 months ago I was in one of the best matches in NXT history, and a top match of Wrestlemania weekend. On that day, a top executive in WWE told me I was “crushing it.” I was slated to feud for the NXT title but I got called up to RAW instead. I consistently outperformed everyone’s expectations, especially throughout 2023 and early 2024. I never complained about anything or was difficult to work with. I tirelessly pitched ideas to anyone who would listen, as recently as the day before I was notified. I never once missed a booking, and I was injured 1 time in 7 years for 3 months. I’m thankful, disappointed, but also excited. This has lit a fire under me to relentlessly prove myself to the world. All I ever wanted was a fair shot and now I have the opportunity to go out and take it. That’s enough talk, now it’s time to Do or Dijak. My last day under a WWE contract is June 28, 2024. Bookings/Interviews: [email protected] Get ready to Feast Your Fucking Eyes. Donovan Dijak”
Dijak has been with the company since 2017. Before that, he spent three years with Ring of Honor. From the summer of 2020 to March 2021, Dijak was known as T-Bar in Retribution. He continued with the gimmick until eventually returning to NXT in late 2022. He hadn’t appeared on NXT programming since April, although he had wrestled on an episode of Main Event and a recent edition of WWE Speed.
This week’s WWE Main Event was taped at the EnMarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia before Monday’s episode of Raw.
Isla Dawn & Alba Fyre defeated Kayden Carter & Katana Chance (5:05)
This was fine and had a good finish. Dawn and Fyre look better each time they tag and it made sense that they got the win here.
They built the match around Carter getting a hot tag before they made things unbalanced in the end to get the win.
Carter came in all guns blazing and she got a two count on Dawn so that Fyre had to break it up and make a save. Dawn then took out Chance to leave Carter outnumbered.
Dawn and Fyre did a cool finisher on Carter where they kind of hoisted her up and nailed her with a double-team DDT/Flatliner combo. Road Dogg wasn’t sure what it was either, but it looked pretty good to me.
Pete Dunne defeated Dijak (7:10)
This was really strong in the last few minutes as these two delivered a really good match by Main Event standards.
This was the first outing for Dijak on this show under his new moniker. His last match here was back in September 2022 when he was working as T-Bar. As he has attested many times, he did not enjoy that gimmick.
Dunne worked a tag match a few weeks ago with Tyler Bate, but his last solo bout on Main Event was actually against T-Bar in January 2022. This time round it was a vastly superior match, despite it having the same outcome.
The early going was mostly Dunne but they went to a break a few minutes in as Dijak caught Dunne with a big boot as he came off the top rope.
The second half was all about Dunne mounting a comeback and when he did it was pretty fun. He used a cool snap German for two and then locked in a choke.
Dijak powered out with a sit-out powerbomb for a near fall of his own. The crowd was into it by this point and they started to trade superkicks and big boots.
It took a counter and a small package for Dunne to get the win, but I kind of hope that they do it all again next week as it could have gone either way and the crowd was left pumped to see Raw.
More NXT stars were called up during the second night of the WWE Draft.
During Raw, it was announced that Ilja Dragunov and Lyra Valkyria would be heading to Raw, while Blair Davenport will now be a part of the SmackDown brand. On social media, Dijak was announced as the newest member of the Raw roster.
EXCLUSIVE: The #WWEDraft isn't over just yet! Which #WWENXT Superstar just got drafted to #WWERaw?
SmackDown this past Friday had Carmelo Hayes and Baron Corbin were drafted to SmackDown, while Kiana James was called up to Raw. Cody Rhodes defeated Hayes in the main event.
Dragunov is a former NXT Champion, losing the title to Trick Williams on last week’s NXT, the first night of Spring Breakin’. Valkyria is a former NXT Women’s Champion, having lost the title recently to Roxanne Perez at NXT Stand & Deliver during WrestleMania weekend.
This will be Dijak’s second run on the main roster after first being called up as part of the group Retribution in 2020 under the name T-Bar. After the group disbanded, he remained on the main roster until 2022, when he returned to NXT under the name Dijak.
A triple threat match for the North American title is now set for Stand & Deliver.
After Josh Briggs defeated Duke Hudson on Tuesday’s NXT, Oba Femi appeared on a perch and announced that he would defend the North American title against both Briggs and Dijak, the latter of whom was doing color commentary at ringside.
Briggs had called out Femi on last week’s NXT, looking for revenge after Femi destroyed his former tag team partner Brooks Jensen. Dijak then came to the ring and said he was done playing around and wanted a shot at the North American title. The three ended up brawling before eventually being separated by a referee.
It was also announced that Meta-Four will be the hosts of Stand & Deliver. The group took over NXT’s production truck near the end of the show to make the announcement.
Here is the updated lineup for NXT Stand & Deliver:
NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov defends against Tony D’Angelo
NXT Women’s Champion Lyra Valkyria defends against Roxanne Perez
Trick Williams vs. Carmelo Hayes
NXT North American Champion Oba Femi defends against Dijak and Josh Briggs
A no disqualification match has been added to Vengeance Day.
Joe Gacy will meet Dijak after the two ended up getting into a brawl on Tuesday. After being thrown off a dumpster, Gacy later emerged and accepted the challenge for Sunday.
Gacy and Dijak had a meeting on NXT that quickly turned into a brawl. As they were fighting outside of the WWE Performance Center, the two ended up on a platform where Dijak threw Gacy into a nearby dumpster. Later, after new general manager Ava yelled at Dijak over what he had done, Dijak said he wanted Gacy in a no disqualification match for Sunday. Ava did not think Gacy would recover by then, but Gacy popped out of the dumpster and agreed to the match.
Here is the updated lineup for Sunday’s Vengeance Day card:
WWE NXT Vengeance Day, Sunday, February 4, 8 p.m. Eastern time on Peacock/WWE Network —
NXT Champion Ilja Dargunov defends against Trick Williams
NXT Women’s Champion Lyra Valkyria defends against Roxanne Perez
NXT North American Champion Oba Femi defends against Dragon Lee
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic finals: Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams vs. Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin
No DQ match: Dijak vs. Joe Gacy
Six-person mixed tag team match: The Family (Tony D’Angelo, Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo & Adriana Rizzo) vs. OTM (Lucien Price, Bronco Nima & Jaida Parker)
On the final NXT episode of 2023, Eddy Thorpe and Dijak look to settle their rivalry.
Dijak and Thorpe are facing off in an NXT Underground match tonight. The two have been at war for months, including Thorpe recently costing Dijak the Iron Survivor Challenge at NXT Deadline. Their most recent match ended in a disqualification when Dijak used a turnbuckle and the ring ropes to attack Thorpe.
There will be no ropes tonight in the MMA-inspired NXT Underground match. It’s the second time the stipulation has ever been used. Thorpe defeated Damon Kemp in the first NXT Underground match this July.
Cora Jade, who made her return at Deadline, will be in action against Karmen Petrovic tonight.
There will also be a Heritage Cup Championship match with Josh Briggs challenging Noam Dar. Briggs has said that, even though Dar will have Meta-Four with him, Briggs needs to do this on his own and doesn’t want Brooks Jensen or Fallon Henley getting involved.
Plus, both semifinal matches in the Men’s Breakout Tournament will take place. Our coverage starts at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
Taped before a live studio audience from a sound stage at the Performance Center in Orlando, the show opens with an “all of nothing” tag team match.
OTM (Bronco Nima & Lucien Price with Scrypts) defeated Chase U (Andre Chase & Duke Hudson)
The “all or nothings” stipulation relates to Chase U’s debt. If Chase U won this match, all of their debt would be wiped out. They lost, so their debt doubles, or something like that. This storyline where Saved by the Bell meets The Sopranos is a bit convoluted.
NXT Tag Team Champions The Family (Tony D’Angelo & Stacks) watch from a perch overlooking the ring, as they have a stake in Chase U’s debt.
Heat on Chase that leads to a hot tag. In comes Hudson like a house of fire. Scrypts jumps on the apron, and Hudson gives him a hip toss into the ring. With Hudson distracted with Scyrpts, Chase makes a bling tag.
Chase assures Hudson, “I got this!” However, Chase did not. He eats a superkick from Price. Nima then tags in, and Price assists him in executing a tandem spinebuster. Nima then covers Chase for a three count.
Hudson was noticeably upset with Chase after their loss.
The first winners of the NXT Year-End Awards are announced with very little fanfare, as a generic voiceover announces the winners. Tag Team of the Year is The Creed Brothers. Female Superstar of the Year is Tiffany Stratton. Male Superstar of the Year is Ilja Dragunov. Fan voting was supposed to determine who won the awards, but I am not sure if that is a shoot.
Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams meet up backstage, and they talk about the injury to NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov. Williams is thinking of postponing the match, but Hayes urges him to not to postpone. Hayes urges to take the shot, thus taking advantage of an injury to win the title.
Heritage Cup Champion Noam Dar (with Lash Legend, Jakara Jackson & Oro Mensah) defeated Josh Briggs via disqualification to retain the trophy
Briggs gets DQ’d in the fourth round, and Dar is awarded the win. Although Dar had his Meta-Four entourage in his corner, Briggs in storyline was adamant that he do this alone without his pals. That decision likely cost him the match.
The match itself was pretty good, but just the audience is getting invested, it ends with a lame DQ. Could have done it in the second of third round, and saved us all that time.
Briggs dominated in the first round, but Dar was saved by the bell. Briggs was about to powerbomb Dar when the bell rings to end the round.
Dar tries to counter with a triangle in the second round, but Briggs powers out. Briggs goes on to deliver a Western Lariat, and Briggs covers Dar for a pinfall to end round two in under 90 seconds.
Much of round three is during a split-screen commercial break, and Dar cuts off Briggs. The show returns from the break with 30 seconds remaining in the third round. Dar and Briggs are fighting on the apron, and Dar gives Briggs on DDT. Dar delivers a finisher on the floor to Briggs as the round ends.
Briggs bled from the nose and/or mouth. Briggs is on rubber legs as round four begins. Dar capitalizes with a fast paced attacks, but Briggs keeps kicking out of covers.
Briggs fires up with a big boot for a near fall. A moment later and Dar targets Briggs’ leg. Dar jumps off the top rope on the Briggs’ leg. Dar goes for an ankle lock, but Briggs escapes.
Briggs levels Dar with a right hand, and Dar hits the mat like falling timber. As the referee goes to check on Dar, Legend jumps on the apron. She hits Briggs in the back of the head with a spit bucket, and Briggs crumples to the mat. Dar hooks a leg, but Briggs still kicked out.
Jakara Jackson tries tossing Dar the bucket, but Briggs takes it away from Dar. Briggs hits Dar with the bucket in full view of the referee. The ref signals for a DQ, and Briggs loses the match as a DQ automatically ends the bout (instead of the score being 1-1).
Cora Jade defeated Karmen Petrovic
This match was set up after a dispute over a locker. Petrovic was upset at Jade for disrespecting her and stealing her locker. Petrovic got a lot of offense, but Jade cuts her off. Jade then delivers a double-arm DDT, and Jade covers Petrovic for a three count.
Jade acts like she is going to pummel Petrovic more after the match, but Gigi Dolan runs down to make a save. Jade flees to fight another day.
Riley Osborne defeated in a semifinal match in the NXT Breakout Tournament
King was looking dominate when out comes Trey Bearhill. He was carrying a metal folding chair, and was seemingly out for revenge on King. King is distracted by the Bearhill, allowing Osborne to execute a shooting star press on King. Osborne then scores a pinfall on King. Osborne advances to the tournament final.
Bearhill, who looks similar to a larger, more angry Post Malone, attacks King after the match. In storyline, King took Bearhill’s spot in the tournament after attacking him. Now Bearhill is out for revenge. King is taking a beating, but he slithers out of the ring to escape a beatdown.
More NXT Year-End Awards: Match of the Year is Carmelo Hayes vs. Ilja Dragunov at NXT No Mercy (September 30) and Moment of the Year is Undertaker arrives in NXT.
Ava, who is now an official spokesperson of NXT, tells reporter Kelly Kincaid that there is no update on the condition of NXT Champ Ilja Dragunov.
Bron Breakker defeated Nathan Frazier
Baron Corbin was scouting the match from a monitor backstage.
The story of the match was a variation of David vs. Goliath. Similar to the Dar-Briggs earlier in the show, the dynamic was at least different here as Goliath was a heel in this match (rather than the face in the earlier bout). It worked much better here, and this was arguably the best match on the show so far.
The match goes through a commercial break. Frazier is getting pummeled as the show returns from the break. He eventually makes a comeback, and Frazier does a dive through the ropes. Breakker is sent crashing into the ring steps.
Frazier jumps off the top rope into the waiting arms of Breakker, and Breakker slams him hard. Breakker measures for a spear, but Frazier cuts him off with a superkick. Frazier goes for a Phoenix Splash, but Breakker moves. Frazier rolls through and is back on his feet. Not for long, as Breakker mows him down with spear. Breakker then hooks a leg for a three count.
Drew Gulak and the No Quarter Catch Crew cut promos on Dragon Lee and the LWO. By the way, “No Quarter Catch Crew” is a terrible name in my opinion, for whatever that is worth. Too many words in one name.
Fallon Henley, Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs meet backstage, and the apparently agree to go their separate ways. They all want to go singles. Why can’t they be friends anymore? They at least say they love each other.
In a skit with Arianna Grace and Ava, Grace finds out Roxanne Perez is her opponent in a match next week at New Year’s Evil.
NXT Women’s Champion Lyra Valkyria and Blair Davenport sat down for a “face-to-face” segment. They bickered, argued and insulted each other. This was supposed to hype up their title match next week. Not sure it did that, but whatever. Their match should be good.
Oba Femi defeated Tavion Heights in a semifinal match in the NXT Breakout Tournament
Vic Joseph on commentary remarks that most people thought these two would meet in the finals, instead of the semifinals. That makes no sense if you know how brackets work.
They had a hoss fight in the match itself. Femi eventually executes a pop-up powerbomb, and Femi covers Heights for a pinfall. Femi advances to face Riley Osborne in the tournament final, which happens next week at New Year’s Evil.
NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov shows up wearing a neck brace. He tells Kelly Kincaid that he is looking for Trick Williams.
Joe Gacy defeated Joe Coffey (with Mark Coffey & Wolfgang)
Gacy enters through the crowd like he is Raven on a episode of Nitro in ’97, minus all the fanfare. Last week he was under the ring like Hornswoggle. His gimmick make less sense to me as the weeks go by, but at least this match somewhat makes sense as Gacy cost Coffey a match on a previous episode. Plus, this was the battle of two guys named Joe.
Hank Walker & Tank Ledger run down to ringside during the match, and they brawl with Mark Coffey & Wolfgang. Meanwhile, Gacy with the Upside Down finisher, and Gacy covers Coffey for a pinfall.
Eddy Thorpe defeated Dijak in an Underground match
Despite some silly things, this was otherwise a good match. Thorpe has good charisma. His face was painted for this match, giving him a modified look for this gimmick match.
Of course, with the “Underground” setting, no ropes on a ring surrounded by what are essentially lumberjacks in pro wrestling parlance. Their main job was pounding on the mat, which gave the setting a Pit Fighter vibe.
If they were supposed to act like lumberjacks in a lumberjack match, they failed miserably. That was a gimmick in early versions of the “Underground,” but Thorpe and Dijak brawled around ringside with no interference. Those at ringside parted like the Red Sea, as they allowed Dijak and Thorpe to keep brawling on the floor. Later, there would be a stunt at ringside.
At one point, Thorpe gives Dijak a German suplex. Diajk is suplexed out of the ring, but he (sort of) lands on his feet at ringside. Dijak then lifts Thorpe on his shoulder for the Feast Your Eyes finisher. Thorpe is laid out on the floor.
For some reason, an angry Dijak rages on the lumberjacks. Dijak mows down several of them at ringside, but that allows Thorpe time to recover. Thorpe backdrops Dijak back into the ring. In the mean time, Dijak has wrapped his hand with a belt he used earlier in the match.
Thorpe blocks a punch with the wrapped hand, and Thorpe delivers an implant DDT referred to as “Manifest Destiny.” With a receipt from earlier in the match, Thorpe whips Dijak with the belt. Thorpe applies a sleeper, but Dijak rams Thorpe into a ring post to break the hold.
Thorpe counters a powerbomb with a hurricanrana. Dijak takes a bump out of the ring, and he lands with a thud on the floor. Thorpe follows up with a flying elbow drop off the apron. Dijak takes another “Manifest Destiny” DDT, but this time Thorpe gives him the DDT on the floor. Dijak in a corny manner yells he will not give up.
Thorpe mounts Dijak and again applies the sleeper. Dijak tries to break the hold, and somehow Dijak manages to climb up a set of ring steps. The steps are conveniently set up beside the announce desk. They tease a Nestea Plunge through the desk, but Thorpe let go of the sleeper. Thorpe then does a DDT that sends him and Dijak crashing through the announce desk. Thorpe gets to his feet, but Dijak is unable to do the same. Thorpe is awarded the match.
The show closes with a contract signing with Trick Williams and Ilja Dragunov. They are backstage seating at a table across from each other. As he signs the contract, Williams says they can postpone the match. Dragunov responds by taking off his neck brace and saying nothing can stop him. Dragunov signs the contract and they have a stare down as the show fades to black.
The return of NXT Underground is set for the last NXT of 2023.
Dijak and Eddy Thorpe will meet in the no ropes match next Tuesday. Thorpe appeared via vignette on Tuesday’s show, saying what he has gone through has been heart wrenching for his family. After mentioning their last match ended with the top rope breaking, Thorpe challenged Dijak to the NXT Underground match. Dijak agreed to the match later, saying that the last NXT of 2023 will be Thorpe’s last match ever.
A match for the NXT Heritage Cup will take place next week between Josh Briggs and Noam Dar. In a segment backstage, Jensen offered to be in Briggs’ corner, saying he knew Meta-Four would be in Dar’s corner. Briggs rejected Jensen’s offer, saying he needed to do this on his own.
Cora Jade will meet Karmen Petrovic after Jade reclaimed her locker backstage, which had been given to Petrovic. When Petrovic appeared, she was unhappy to see the contents of her locker on the floor.
The Men’s Breakout Tournament semifinals will also take place. Oba Femi will face Tavion Heights, while Riley Osborne will take on Lexis King.
