AEW wrestlers to challenge for CMLL titles at Arena Mexico on Friday

The Death Riders are headed to Arena Mexico on Friday.

During CMLL’s event on Sunday, champion Gran Guerrero issued an open challenge for any AEW wrestler to challenge him for his title. On Tuesday, CMLL posted a video of Claudio Castagnoli responding to challenge. CMLL later posted the full lineup for the show, which includes Castagnoli challenging for the belt and Wheeler Yuta and Daniel Garcia vs. the CMLL Tag Team Champions Angel de Oro and Niebla Roja.

Castagnoli says in the video:

“Be careful what you wish for because I just got my visa to accept your challenge for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship. The Death Riders, myself Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and Daniel Garcia are coming to Arena Mexico.”

The Opps’ Powerhouse Hobbs also indicated recently that he’s interested in wrestling Guerrero for the belt. He responded to a series of posts by Fightful indicating as such recently.

Powerhouse Hobbs looking to challenge for CMLL World Heavyweight Championship

Powerhouse Hobbs appears to be eyeing the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship.

Gran Guerrero has held the title for over three years now, having won it from Hechicero at Lunes ClĂĄsico on November 7, 2022. Guerrero last defended the title on Sunday against The Beast Mortos at Arena Mexico.

Hobbs responded to a post from Fightful about Guerrero’s win over Mortos, writing “Hmmm” along with a thinking emoji. Fightful then screenshotted Hobbs’ response and wrote that he appeared to have his sights set on the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship. Hobbs confirmed the speculation by writing, “YOU GOT DAMN RIGHT.”

Hobbs hasn’t wrestled for CMLL directly but did take part in a 10-man tag match at AEW Grand Slam Mexico held in Arena Mexico on June 18. The member of The Opps hasn’t wrestled since being defeated by Hangman Page in a Falls Count Anywhere match at AEW Blood & Guts on November 12 in Greensboro. His social media posts are below:

AEW wrestlers to challenge for CMLL titles

CMLL announced Wednesday that multiple AEW wrestlers will be challenging for CMLL titles on upcoming events in Mexico.

On Wednesday’s CMLL Informa show, the promotion revealed that AEW’s The Beast Mortos will challenge Gran Guerrero for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship in Arena Mexico on Sunday, November 23.

Mortos made his return to Arena Mexico earlier this year for the first time in nearly 14 years after being banned from wrestling in the building after jumping from CMLL to AAA earlier in his career.

CMLL also revealed on Informa that AEW’s Wheeler Yuta and Daniel Garcia of The Death Riders will challenge for the promotion’s World Tag Team Championship currently held by Angel de Oro and Niebla Roja. A date for that contest has yet to be revealed.

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite and Collision three-hour block also featured a CMLL presence with Mascara Dorada and Kazuchika Okada squaring off in a Double Jeopardy match. That bout set up a new CMLL title match for Saturday’s AEW Full Gear Saturday Tailgate Brawl show.

Sunday Update

[email protected]

— My weekend show with Garrett Gonzales talked about all the news of the last week, including the fallout to the UFC fixed fight, Saturday, 2025 Awards, Full Gear, Victor Conte, weekly ratings, AEW creative and more. I’ll be back with Bryan Alvarez tonight talking about the weekend news.

— The return of Soberano Jr. after knee surgery led to a surprise sellout of Arena Mexico on Friday night with 16,000 fans. Soberano Jr. & Angel de Oro beat titan & Atlantis Jr. in the main event. Austin Aries was also there wrestling Mascara Dorada. Anyway, Soberano Jr. is a huge star, probably more than most recognized. There were banners and many with his masks. The unique aspect is that he’s a rudo and he was cheered like crazy by the women. I compare him to Gino Hernandez except he’s a far better wrestler and Gino as a heel never got cheered like that.

— Kazuchika Okada will be facing Hiroshi Tanahashi in Tanahashi’s retirement match on 1/4 at the Tokyo Dome. Okada flew to Japan to appear at Anjo and come out after Tanahashi beat Yuto Ice.  He was also at a press conference today  saying that Saturday was a throwback with his old music and Gedo, and Gedo will be with him  at the Tokyo Dome,  but he’s coming as AEW Okada not New Japan Okada.  He said he might beat Tanahashi with a low blow and humiliate him in his retirement match.

— New Japan did talk to Tetsuya Naito about the match. Naito, who is in Japan and met with Okada, said New Japan discussed it with him and he was willing to do it.  But they chose Okada for the spot. As far as Shinsuke Nakamura goes, the only thing I know is he was interested in doing it.

— Added to the Tokyo Dome is Sho vs. El Desperado vs. Kosei Fujita vs. Taiji Ishimori with the winner becoming the top contender for Douki’s IWGP jr. heavyweight title. Why that match isn’t at a show in the next few weeks and Douki’s title defense against the winner isn’t at the Dome is an unanswered question.

— The Sydney Sweeney movie on Christy Martin (“Christy”) opened on Friday and almost nobody that I know was even aware of it.  I didn’t even know until Thursday. Anyway, the estimate is that it will do $1.3 million on 2,011 screens. Smashing Machine did $4.8 million in its opening weekend and was considered a bomb. It is believed to be the worst grossing full national release movie (2,000 screens) in its opening weekend in 13 years.

— Mercedes Mone was in Rome, Italy, today defending the BetYa women’s title over Queen Maya, with the match ending when The Beat Mortos speared Maya.

— Konosuke Takeshita worked for DDT today in Kumamoto, Japan, teaming with Sanshiro Takagi & Harahsima over To-y & Daicdhi Sato & Yuki Ishida.

— Also in Japan, Megan Bayne & Hanako won their tag team tournament match over Ami Sohrei & Lady C in Kissei. They also beat Aya Sakura & Sayaka Kurara yesterday in Gunma.  They are 2-0 so far. Bayne will be back in the U.S as she becomes the first person to do both a tag team tournament in the U.S. and Japan at the same time.

— Yoshiki Inamura beat KENTA yesterday at Korakuen Hall in Japan to win the GHC title. This and yesterday’s Ace Austin vs. Kyle Fletcher were the matches I’ve heard the most about.  Hank Walker & Tank Leder won the GHC tag titles from Masa Kitamiya & Takshi Sugiura.  Inamura defends against Kaito Kiyomiya on 12/7 at Korakuen Hall

— The deal with Miranda Alize & Nixon Newell from last night at AEW Collision is that they walked out before the match with Anna Jay & Tay Melo because they felt it was going to be a squash match. It was not about doing the job so  much as wanting a longer match and not doing a second match after what they believed was a squash match earlier. Still, people were shocked that they walked out. They were evidently told they’d get some offense in but they felt people would see it as a squash because it was going so short. They left and Hyan & Maya World were put in the match instead.

— While few caught it, for those in the Boston area who did, Dynamite will be in Boston on the 19th. They had a wrong graphic up that Tony Schiavone read listing the 19th for Reading, PA.  I’m not sure exactly what happened but AEW confirmed the show is in Boston and there was a mistake made. They weren’t even aware of the mistake until after the show was over. One year ago this week, they ran Reading, PA for Dynamite and somehow something went wrong and that ended up on the air. The other cities in that read for the next few weeks were correct.

— The Observer Hall of Fame issue will be out on Friday. Multiple new people were voted in.  Most of the people who have to be in got in and there were some, I wouldn’t say surprises, but vote totals. We will also do a show covering it on Friday.

— Solofa Fatu (Rikishi) said that his emergency surgery was six hours long but didn’t go into details past saying the experience has changed his outlook on life.

— Google trends for a quiet weekend from a mainstream standpoint saw 20,000 for Charlotte Flair which was No. 149 for the weekend, based on a wardrobe malfunction and another 10,000 for Smackdown likely related to that. The UFC show yesterday had 40,000 which is very low.  Josh Hokit got 5,000 for doing his promo which sounded like he was imitating Chael Sonnen imitating Superstar Billy Graham.

— Claudio Castagnoli was at the New Jersey Devils hockey game last night to promote Full Gear.

— Stephanie Vaquer was at the Rangers vs. Islanders hockey game last night to promote the Raw show on the 17th in Madison Square Garden.

— Joe Hendry worked last night’s NXT show in Tampa teaming with Je’Von Evans & Tavion Heights to beat Dark State’s Dion Lennox & Saquon Shugars & Cutler James.

— Regarding the Newell story, Truth Magnum did a comedy post this morning relating to that saying “Turbo and I almost walked out last night when there was no Caesar’s salad in catering.”

— Invicta will be airing a highlights show on Friday night at both 6:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern time airing some of the best recent fights. Tom Hannifan of TNA will host the show.

— A correction from Friday’s Observer. In the coverage of Yoshihiro Takayama we mistakenly wrote his paralysis was in 2007 but it was in 2017. (thanks to Jose Santana)

— With Jerry Lawler coming to Memphis Wrestling for the taping of the Christmas show, he would be the only person to appear in every incarnation of Memphis TV Wrestling from the WHBQ days through 1977 to the modern incarnation. Jimmy Valiant has been in every incarnation post the Jarett-Gulas split in 1977.

— Prestige and West Coast Pro in Los Angeles for the final Prestige show: Aiden Andrews & Bryce Kouza & Kaori Leon b Hadar Hovits & Ori Gold & Jiah Jewell, Travis Williams b Alpha Zo, Maya World b Miko Alana, Andrew Cass b Adrian Quest to retain the West Coast Pro Golden Gate title, Johnnie Robbie b Amira to retain the West Coast Pro women’s title in the match of the night, Titus Alexander & Starboy Charlie b Michael Miro & Vishnu Akli to keep the West Coast Pro tag titles, Kevin Blackwood b Judas Icarus to  keep the Prestige title, Vinnie Massaro b Royce Isaacs to keep the West Coast Pro title (thanks to Chris Champol).

–Ricochet appeared at last night’s Chicago Wolves minor league hockey game to promote World’s End.

— Today is the 28th anniversary of the 1997 Survivor Series with Bret Hart being manipulated into losing a match he was expecting to win via DQ. It ended up becoming one of the most talked about controversies in wrestling history and is to this day one of the five most famous U.S. matches of all-time.

— David Otunga did a show on this and said that in his opinion Hart didn’t have creative control because Vince had already told him he was prepared to breach his contract prior, so thus the creative control stipulation and contract were invalid. Vince had not yet breached the contract in actuality but had said at one point he would if Hart wouldn’t negotiate a lower deal. He also said the clause was vague.

— And speaking of referees screwing up a famous match, Nick Patrick turned 66 today. Chris Jericho turned 55 and posted a photo of him with abs showing. Pete Dunne turned 32.  So I guess that means Rayo of Los Americanos is also 32. Rube Wright, who was also Lu Kim, a giant powerhouse who Stu Hart thought was one of the toughest wrestlers of his era, passed away on this day 42 years ago. Joe Scarpello, a legendary NCAA champion who had a long pro career passed away on this day 26 years ago. He was the guy killed by the Bombs Away by Ray Stevens in the original movie “The Wrestler” in 1974. Today is also the 40th anniversary of the interview Arn Anderson did when he was out there with Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard and Ole Anderson where he used the term Four Horsemen, just as a throw away line. (thanks to Tony Richards)

WOL: Are Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens the same character?

Image: WWE

It’s the Saturday edition of Wrestling Observer Live with Jim Valley.

Drew McIntyre stood tall over Cody Rhodes to end their SNME contract signing on Friday’s WWE SmackDown.

The story for tonight is “Drew is in Cody’s head.” Didn’t Kevin Owens play mind games with Cody, too?

KO and Drew are very similar characters: heels who tell the truth and seemingly challenge for the WWE Title at least once a year. Are Drew and Owens pretty much the same character?

Plus, Jim talks the NJPW Super Junior Tag League, CMLL, AEW Collision, WWE Universe vs. The Sickos, Mike Rotunda and more.

Check it out.

Mercedes Mone to defend CMLL Women’s title on next AEW Collision

Image: AEW

Mercedes Mone will put up the CMLL Women’s Championship on next Saturday’s AEW Collision against Olympia.

Olympia made her AEW debut Saturday, defeating Taya Valkyrie in an open challenge. In a backstage promo afterward, she challenged Mone to the match for next Saturday.

It will be their first time ever sharing the ring.

Mone won the gold on this past June’s AEW Grand Slam Mexico by defeating Zeuxis. Since then, she has defended it twice with wins over La Catalina (June) and Persephone (October). Olympia is looking for her first title run anywhere.

Mone currently holds 12 title belts that includes the TBS title, interim Ring of Honor Women’s TV title, and various indie belts. She and ROH Women’s World Champion Athena have also entered the inaugural AEW Women’s Tag Team title tournament.

Next week’s Collision will be taped after this Wednesday’s live Dynamite from Edinburg, Texas. The title match is the only one announced for the taping thus far.

CMLL women’s wrestler makes AEW debut on Collision

CMLL women’s wrestler Olympia made her AEW debut on Saturday’s Collision from San Antonio, Texas.

She made her surprise appearance by challenging Taya Valkyrie in an MxM TV open challenge, dispatching the veteran in short order.

Olympia has competed in the Khan companies before, appearing twice for Ring of Honor this past September. She bested Viva Van in a Pure rules match and then lost to Billie Starkz in a quarterfinal in the inaugural Women’s Pure title tournament.

It’s expected the appearance will help build a future match with Mercedes Mone, who holds the CMLL Women’s title.

From our Dave Meltzer in this past Friday’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter from the previous Friday’s CMLL show:

“They did an angle in Arena Mexico for (WrestleDream) the next day that almost nobody was going to see and that social media might get out a little but not nearly enough. Mone then issued an open challenge to any woman in the back for the CMLL title. Olympia came out and Mone said she would defend against her, but in the U.S., so they are likely doing that match in AEW or ROH in the next few weeks.”

CMLL crowns 2025 Women’s International Grand Prix winner

Persephone has won this year’s CMLL Women’s International Grand Prix.

Much like earlier this year with the men, Team Mexico bested Team International in a 20-woman torneo cibernetico match on Friday in Arena Mexico. AEW’s Thekla was the last person eliminated, with Persephone picking up the win after a moonsault.

Those representing Team Mexico included Persephone, La Catalina, Olympia, Skadi, Reyna Isis, Zeuxis, India Sioux, Lluvia, and La Jarochita. Team International consisted of Julia Hart (AEW), Skye Blue (AEW), Thekla (AEW), Mina Shirakawa (AEW), Diamante (ROH), Shoko Nakajima (MLW), Hazuki (Stardom), Koguma (Stardom) and Kanji (RevPro).

Women’s International Grand Prix matches weren’t held in the promotion until 2022, when Dalys became the first tournament winner. Tessa Blanchard won in 2023, while Reyna Isis won last year’s tournament.

Mistico won the Men’s International Grand Prix back in August, last eliminating TJP. He, Volador Jr., Titan, Atlantis Jr., Mascara Dorada, Angel de Oro, Neon, Templario, Zandokan Jr., and Difunto represented Team Mexico while Team International featured Rocky Romero, Donovan Dijak, Robbie X, Michael Oku, The Beast Mortos, Lio Rush, Mike Bailey, TJP, Taiji Ishimori, and Action Andretti.

CMLL & Stardom announce official business partnership

CMLL is continuing to expand its international ties by announcing an official partnership with Japanese women’s wrestling promotion Stardom.

The business relationship was announced on Wednesday night during CMLL’s weekly Informa talk show. CMLL boss Salvador Lutteroth Lomeli and Stardom president Taro Okada both appeared for the announcement. Kounosuke Izui of Japanese wrestling magazine Lady’s Ring — who helped bring the two promotions together — also appeared.

In the partnership, CMLL and Stardom will exchange talent with the goal of benefitting both promotions and advancing women’s wrestling worldwide.

“This partnership was made possible through the efforts of LADYSRING’s Kounosuke Izui who has long served as a bridge between CMLL and the Japanese women’s professional wrestling world,” Stardom wrote.

“In addition, Stardom’s sister organization, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, also has a partnership with CMLL, and Stardom’s entry into the organization will further expand their ties.”

CMLL now has official working relationships with AEW, NJPW, Stardom, and MLW.

This Friday, CMLL is presenting its annual Women’s International Grand Prix at Arena Mexico. Stardom’s Hazuki and Koguma are two of the participants. There will also be representatives from AEW/ROH (Mina Shirakawa, Skye Blue, Julia Hart, Thekla, and Diamante), MLW (Shoko Nakajima), and Revolution Pro Wrestling (Kanji).

CMLL star undergoes successful knee surgery

Zandokan Jr. has undergone successful surgery to repair the knee injury that recently forced him out of action.

The injury happened when Zandokan & Difunto lost to AEW Tag Team Champions Bandido & Brody King at a CMLL event on September 12. Zandokan did briefly continue to work matches after that before it was revealed that he would need to have surgery. That operation has now been completed.

“Thank God the operation was successful,” Zandokan posted on Instagram. “I’ll be back with you all soon!”

Along with forcing Zandokan to miss time for CMLL, the injury caused a change to MLW’s Opera Cup 2025 tournament. He defeated Blue Panther Jr. in the first round and was slated to face Volador Jr. next. Instead, Star Jr. replaced Zandokan and lost to Volador in the quarterfinals. The semifinals will be Volador vs. Satoshi Kojima and Mistico vs. Austin Aries.

Zandokan is a member of Galeon Fantasma — a heel trio with Difunto and Barboza.

Mistico would like to have ‘double contract’ with CMLL & US promotion

Mistico would like to sign a wrestling contract in the United States while remaining a top star for CMLL in Mexico.

Since AEW & CMLL formed their close working relationship, we’ve seen luchadors like Hechicero sign AEW deals while remaining contracted to CMLL. A dual contract is also something that interests Mistico, with him telling WrestleZone that he has ambitions of doing more in the U.S. promotions where he competes (AEW and MLW).

“I’m looking for an opportunity in any promotion in the world. If I receive an opportunity, I will take it. I proved that I love lucha libre,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s in Mexico, London, Japan. I think that I’ve shown what I’m made of, and now I think it’s time to look for new things.”

“And if I have an opportunity for a championship in an American company, I’m going to do it in AEW and MLW with all the pleasure of the world,” Mistico added. “Like other teammates who have a wonderful double contract, I would like to have that kind of contract. Or also to have new rivalries with other superstars. So I’m looking for new opportunities and new challenges in my career.”

Mistico was previously signed to a U.S. contract when he competed as Sin Cara for WWE in the early 2010s.

The WrestleZone interview was done through a translator and was to promote MLW’s Slaughterhouse event that’s taking place this Saturday, where Mistico will be facing Ultimo Guerrero in the Opera Cup tournament quarterfinals. Mistico was the 2024 Opera Cup winner and is also a former Middleweight Champion for MLW.

Mistico has been one of 2025’s best wrestlers in the ring and at the box office. At CMLL’s 92nd Aniversario in September, he regained the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship from AEW star MJF.

CMLL notes: Tessa Blanchard, Mercedes Mone, Persephone

CMLL made two major announcements regarding their women’s division on their Wednesday night CMLL Informa talk show.

Tessa Blanchard will return to the promotion for the first time in 2025 on the Friday, October 10 event at Arena Mexico as announced on Informa. Blanchard was a regular for the promotion throughout 2023 and 2024, but has not worked for the promotion in 2025 after rejoining TNA Wrestling at the beginning of this year.

No opponent has been announced for Blanchard.

Also announced on Informa, Mercedes Mone will make her next defense of the CMLL World Women’s Championship on their Friday, October 17 event. Persephone will challenge Mone for the title at that show.

Persephone was part of the TBS title four-way at Forbidden Door in London in August, a match where Mone retained the Championship. Mone has held the CMLL World Women’s title since defeating Zeuxis for the gold at AEW Grand Slam Mexico this past June.
