NJPW Best of the Super Juniors finals set

NJPW is running back the 2025 Best of the Super Juniors finals with YOH hoping for a different result this time.

It will be a repeat of last year when YOH and Kosei Fujita face off in the Best of the Super Juniors finals this Sunday. Fujita won that 2025 bout to claim his first-ever BOSJ trophy. YOH, who made it to the finals in both 2021 and 2025, has never won the tournament before.

During block action this year, YOH and Fujita finished second in their blocks. They advanced to the semifinals for what ended up being matchups against their respective tag team partners. YOH defeated his ally Master Wato, the A Block winner, while Fujita was able to defeat his Ichiban Sweet Boys partner and B Block winner Robbie Eagles.

The tournament finals are being held at Ota City Gym in Tokyo on Sunday, and the show will air live on NJPW World starting at 4 a.m. Eastern time. In addition to the BOSJ trophy, an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship shot is at stake with either YOH or Fujita becoming the next challenger for DOUKI.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors finals (Sunday, June 7) —

  • Best of the Super Juniors tournament final: YOH vs. Kosei Fujita
  • Rest of card to be announced

There will be both English and Japanese commentary available for the event.

NJPW reveals full card for Best of the Super Juniors semifinals

NJPW has now revealed the full card for Friday’s Best of the Super Juniors semifinals.

In the main event of the show, A Block winner Master Wato takes on YOH, who finished second place in B Block. The semi-main will see Robbie Eagles, the B Block winner, take on A Block runner-up Kosei Fujita. These bouts will determine which two competitors advance to Sunday’s finals for a shot to become the next challenger for DOUKi’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

Both semifinal bouts are pitting tag team partners against each other. Eagles & Fujita, as the Ichiban Sweet Boys, are three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions and held the titles as recently as last month. Wato & YOH are former champs as well.

After BOSJ, NJPW has Dominion coming up on June 14. That event is being headlined by Callum Newman vs. Yota Tsuji for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship — and those two are set to face off on Friday in an eight-man tag match.

NEVER Openweight Champion Ren Narita and his Dominion challenger Aaron Wolf will also collide in tag action.

The semifinals event is being held in Gunma and begins at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time, airing live on NJPW World with English and Japanese commentary.

NJPW announces partnership ‘designed to teach Japanese language through pro wrestling’

NJPW has entered into a new partnership that is “designed to teach the Japanese language through pro wrestling.”

The promotion announced today that it is partnering with JapanesePod101.com, a language-learning tool that helps English speakers study Japanese by guiding them through real Japanese conversations. The service has both free and paid tiers.

In the coming weeks, JapanesePod101.com will offer collaborative videos with NJPW that are focused on teaching users the type of language that is used in Japanese pro wrestling culture. NJPW announced:

  • New Japan Pro-Wrestling is pleased to announce a new collaborative project with JapanesePod101.
  • Through an extensive library of video and social content together with carefully curated online lessons, JapanesePod101 is a long established leader in online Japanese language learning.
  • A series of collaborative videos in the coming weeks and months will allow NJPW fans to get to grips with some of the Japanese language spoken by fans, wrestlers and in venues, allowing for deeper immersion in the Japanese pro-wrestling culture. For regular JapanesePod101 viewers and users, this collaborative content will serve as an introduction to a key part of Japanese sporting and popular culture they might not have explored before.

NJPW’s overtures toward international fans —

NJPW has courted English-speaking fans through establishing international social media accounts and an English-language version of its website, along with offering English commentary for big events on NJPW World. Next month, the first night of this year’s G1 Climax will take place in Chicago. NJPW is also holding a fan fest surrounding that event.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors semifinals set

A dozen names entered the last day of block action still in contention, but NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 33 is now down to its final four wrestlers.

Both semifinal matches are set to pit tag team partners against each other. It will be Master Wato vs. YOH and Robbie Eagles vs. Kosei Fujita this Friday (June 5). The winners advance to the finals on Sunday (June 7), with that bout determining the tournament winner and the next challenger for IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI.

Wato defeated Nick Wayne today to finish on 12 points as the A Block winner. Fujita defeated Daiki Nagai to claim second place in the block, also finishing on 12 points and beating out Francesco Akira due to a tiebreaker.

All of the B Block contenders won their matches today, but it was Eagles and YOH — with respective victories over Hyo and Daisuke Sasaki — who advanced as the top two after tiebreakers were worked out. The block ended in a five-way tie at 12 points.

Fujita is looking to repeat as the BOSJ winner after defeating YOH in last year’s finals. Wato is also looking to claim a second BOSJ trophy after winning the tournament in 2023.

Friday’s show begins at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time and is airing live on NJPW World with English and Japanese commentary. The rest of the card aside from Wato vs. YOH and Eagles vs. Fujita has not been announced yet.

    • I know the [Bushiroad] owner personally, and I want to say once again, thank you for the past 14 years. It was the same when LIJ (Los Ingobernables de Japon) disbanded, but I’m in a situation where I’m wondering ‘what’s going to happen,’ and I can’t help but be excited. • I’ve learned to never say ‘goodbye’ in this business.  Did that a couple times and looked like a dummy when I came back.  Even though this feels like my last run, you really just never know.  With that being said, I’ll leave you with this:

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Takaaki Kidani issue statements on NJPW ownership change

NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi has issued a statement assuring fans that the promotion remains committed to its mission of delivering the best wrestling possible.

News broke early Wednesday morning that ownership of NJPW has changed hands with Bushiroad transferring all of its shares to TV Asahi and CyberAgent. In a statement posted to NJPW’s Japanese website, Tanahashi expressed his gratitude for the support Bushiroad has given during its 14 years leading the promotion. NJPW hopes to achieve significant growth under its new owners while continuing to deliver the product fans expect.

Tanahashi wrote:

  • To all New Japan Pro-Wrestling fans and everyone who has supported and assisted us,
  • We are pleased to announce that Bushiroad Co., Ltd. will be transferring its shares in our company to TV Asahi Corporation and CyberAgent, Inc. Bushiroad became our parent company in 2012, and through various forms of support — including large-scale advertising campaigns — it has enabled New Japan Pro-Wrestling to achieve significant growth. We are deeply grateful.
  • To repay this kindness, we will now strive as a consolidated subsidiary of TV Asahi, with the support of CyberAgent, to achieve significant growth for New Japan Pro-Wrestling as a united company. Our mission to create the best possible wrestling and provide entertainment for all of you remains unchanged. We sincerely ask for your continued support and encouragement.

Takaaki Kidani statement —

Takaaki Kidani, a wrestling fan and the founder of Bushiroad, put out his own statement reflecting on the time he spent overseeing NJPW. He called the ownership change a positive step, with TV Asahi and CyberAgent able to maximize NJPW’s video assets and advance its digital media operations.

Kidani wrote:

  • Thank you very much for your continued support of New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
  • Today, we have decided to transfer all of our shares in New Japan Pro-Wrestling to TV Asahi and CyberAgent. We realize this announcement may come as a surprise to many of our fans.
  • In 2012, at a major turning point when New Japan Pro-Wrestling was aiming for its next phase of growth, we had the privilege of welcoming the company into our group. Over the past 14 years, believing in the power of pro-wrestling as a wonderful form of entertainment, we have worked tirelessly alongside all of you to bring its appeal to an even wider audience.
  • Thanks to these efforts, at the Tokyo Dome event on January 4 of this year, we recorded an attendance of 46,913, achieving a sold-out crowd for the first time in 28 years. Having overcome the challenge of generational transition, young stars in their 20s and 30s are now rising one after another, shining brilliantly in the ring. As Bushiroad, it is a great source of pride in my life to have witnessed New Japan Pro-Wrestling grow so powerfully and to be able to pass the baton to the next generation.
  • However, for New Japan Pro-Wrestling to make even greater strides globally and continue its golden age, it is essential to maximize the use of our accumulated video assets and evolve into a diversified revenue-generating business centered on a powerful streaming platform.
  • Therefore, I am convinced that the best course of action is to entrust the future to the very best possible owners: first, by returning the reins to TV Asahi, our partner since our founding who has consistently supported New Japan Pro-Wrestling through terrestrial broadcasts; and second, by welcoming CyberAgent as a partner to bring a breath of fresh air through cutting-edge digital media.
  • To all our fans, and to the wrestlers and staff who have continued to support New Japan with their passionate battles, thank you so much for walking alongside Bushiroad all this time. Your passion and cheers have been our greatest driving force.
  • Although [NJPW is] parting ways with Bushiroad, I can confidently say that the future of New Japan Pro-Wrestling is brighter than ever. As a passionate pro-wrestling fan myself, I will continue to cheer on the new golden age that you all will create.
  • Thank you so much for the past 14 years. Please look forward to the future of New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

NJPW ownership transfer —

Before this transfer, Bushiroad — a trading card company — owned 70 percent of NJPW and TV Asahi owned 22.7 percent. TV Asahi and CyberAgent now each own 46.3 percent. The promotion will operate as a “consolidated subsidiary” of TV Asahi while receiving support from CyberAgent.

TV Asahi is NJPW’s longtime broadcast partner and also owns a stake in the NJPW World streaming service. CyberAgent operates the streaming platform Abema and already owns Pro Wrestling NOAH, DDT Pro Wrestling, and Tokyo Joshi Pro through its subsidiary CyberFight.

The share transfer is valued at approximately 3.6 billion yen, which is roughly $22.6 million.

NJPW announces ownership change with Bushiroad transferring all shares

A huge story in professional wrestling broke overnight with ownership of NJPW changing hands.

Bushiroad, which oversaw NJPW through its 2010s revival and international expansion efforts, announced that it has transferred all of its shares in the promotion to TV Asahi and CyberAgent. NJPW now becomes a “consolidated subsidiary” of TV Asahi with support from CyberAgent.

TV Asahi is NJPW’s longtime broadcast partner and already owned 22.7 percent of the voting shares in the promotion. Bushiroad owned 70 percent of NJPW, with the transfer of their shares being broken down into 3,550,200 shares to TV Asahi and 6,950,200 shares to CyberAgent. TV Asahi and CyberAgent now own an equal number of shares at 46.3 percent.

The share transfer is valued at approximately 3.6 billion yen, or roughly $22.6 million.

CyberAgent (through its subsidiary CyberFight) already owns three of Japan’s biggest wrestling companies in Pro Wrestling NOAH, DDT Pro Wrestling, and Tokyo Joshi Pro, so it will be interesting to see how closely NJPW collaborates with them going forward. CyberAgent operates the streaming platform Abema, which broadcasts WWE content in Japan. However, WWE programming will be moving to Netflix in Japan before the end of 2026.

In statements regarding the share transfer, NJPW says this will be a good move for the company given TV Asahi’s strong broadcasting and video business base and CyberAgent’s excellent digital media operations. NJPW does not plan to make any changes to its event schedule. As for NJPW World, its future has not been directly addressed, but TV Asahi has been part-owner since the streaming service’s launch and controls the NJPW video library.

“Currently, we have no plans to make any changes to our various business operations, including the events we organize, as a result of this Share Transfer,” NJPW said. “We would like to express our gratitude to Bushiroad, which has supported our business for many years as our largest shareholder, and we look forward to working together with TV Asahi and CyberAgent to further expand our business.”

NJPW/Stardom relationship —

One potentially significant change is that Bushiroad still owns Stardom, meaning that NJPW and Stardom are no longer under the same umbrella. NJPW transferred its ownership stake in Stardom to Bushiroad back in March.

Stardom president Taro Okada — who also works for NJPW — tweeted that the two promotions will continue to work together as fellow members of the Japanese wrestling community.

Bushiroad’s NJPW ownership history —

Bushiroad, a Japanese trading card company led by wrestling fan Takaaki Kidani, acquired NJPW from Yuke’s in 2012. The following years were an important period for NJPW as the promotion continued to break out of its dark ages and find business success during the Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kazuchika Okada era. Developments in streaming technology meant that NJPW was now able to broadcast its events live worldwide, which helped build the NJPW fan base internationally and give existing fans easier access to the product.

The impacts of COVID brought another lull as the Japanese wrestling scene was hit hard economically. But the final Wrestle Kingdom of the Bushiroad era did serve as a high point, with NJPW selling out the Tokyo Dome this January for Tanahashi’s retirement match. Tanahashi currently serves as NJPW’s real-life president amid this ownership change.

“Our mission to create the best wrestling and bring joy to everyone remains unchanged,” Tanahashi said. “We sincerely appreciate your continued support and encouragement.”

Update on Jeff Cobb following WWE release | Exclusive

It sounds like Jeff Cobb, newly a free agent following his release from WWE, still has a strong relationship with NJPW.

Dave Meltzer reports in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cobb was backstage at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku at the start of May. It’s believed that Cobb still has a residence in Japan, though it’s unconfirmed if he’ll be returning to NJPW once his 90-day non-compete clause is up.

Meltzer wrote:

  • Jeff Cobb was backstage at Dontaku. I believe he still has a place in Japan. Unless WWE gives his special dispensation, he would not be able to return in time for G-1 if he does end up here, as the non-compete ends on 7/24. We don’t know if that is what he’ll do. New Japan has its own financial issues. It wouldn’t surprise me if AEW picked up Cobb, but the reality is his chances of going to AEW as a star were much higher one year ago. WWE often enhances someone’s value, but Cobb would not be one of those people.

Cobb had a year-long run with WWE after debuting for the company in May 2025. He was given the name “JC Mateo” and inserted into the Bloodline story as one of Solo Sikoa’s MFTs. But Cobb’s WWE stint was widely considered to be underwhelming, never living up to the time he spent in NJPW. He was released in WWE’s post-WrestleMania 42 roster cuts.

In NJPW, Cobb was one of the promotion’s top foreign wrestlers. He held the NEVER Openweight Championship, IWGP Tag Team titles, and NJPW World Television title.

The 43-year-old Cobb did work some matches for AEW during his NJPW career. He has previous experience in Lucha Underground, ROH, PWG, and represented Guam as an amateur wrestler in the 2004 Olympics.

Five title matches official for NJPW Dominion

NJPW has confirmed a slate of title matches for Dominion 2026.

One of NJPW’s biggest events of the year, Dominion will be held at Osaka-jo Hall on June 14. A press conference was held overnight with NJPW making its first match announcements for the show. It was officially confirmed that the main event will be Callum Newman putting his IWGP Heavyweight Championship on the line against Yota Tsuji.

Newman vs. Tsuji is a rematch from Sakura Genesis, where Newman defeated Tsuji to become the youngest IWGP Heavyweight Champion in history. Tsuji then earned another shot at the belt by pinning Newman in a tag team match earlier this week.

Among the other title matches set is the first defense for new IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Andrade El Idolo. The AEW star defeated Tsuji for the title at Wrestling Dontaku and will now defend in a three-way bout against Shota Umino and Drilla Moloney.

Six matches in total have been confirmed for Dominion so far, with five having championship stakes. The show will air live on NJPW World with English commentary.

NJPW Dominion 2026 main event set

The main event of NJPW Dominion 2026 is now set with Yota Tsuji earning an IWGP Heavyweight Championship rematch.

At the June 14 event in Osaka, Tsuji will challenge Callum Newman for the IWGP Heavyweight title. That was confirmed when Tsuji pinned the champion in a tag team match at Ignition to Dominion today. Tsuji & Shingo Takagi defeated Newman & Jake Lee in a bout that had significant stakes. If Tsuji & Takagi had lost, neither would have been able to challenge Newman for his title again.

Tsuji had a three-month reign as IWGP Heavyweight Champion before dropping the belt to Newman at Sakura Genesis this April. In today’s tag match, he connected with a Gene Blaster spear to get the pin on Newman after Takagi took out Lee. Tsuji then got on the microphone and promised to get NJPW back on the right track after the dark road Newman has taken the company down as champion.

This will be the second defense of Newman’s reign. The youngest IWGP Heavyweight Champion in history, he retained over Takagi at night two of Wrestling Dontaku earlier this week.

Dominion is traditionally one of NJPW’s biggest events of the year. Though not confirmed yet, an IWGP Tag Team title match is being built up with Yuto-Ice & OSKAR defending against Great-O-Khan & HENARE. Those teams needed to be separated after O-Khan & HENARE were on the winning side of a 10-man tag match at Ignition to Dominion.
