World title match official for ROH Final Battle

The Ring of Honor World Championship will be on the line as Rush defends against Brody King at Final Battle.

ROH confirmed today that Rush vs. King for the ROH World Championship will take place at this year’s Final Battle pay-per-view. The event is being held on Friday, December 18 and will air on PPV and HonorClub.

In a matchup of top contenders to the World title, King defeated Shane Taylor in the main event of this week’s episode of ROH TV. King then did a post-show interview where he issued a challenge to Rush for Final Battle.

King, who is now a singles act after leaving Villain Enterprises, has gotten wins against Dalton Castle and Taylor since ROH returned with new TV episodes this summer. After being on hiatus since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ROH returned to television production in August with closed set tapings.

Rush is a two-time ROH World Champion. He lost the title to PCO at last year’s Final Battle but regained it in a triple threat match against PCO and Mark Haskins at Gateway to Honor this February. Rush hasn’t appeared since ROH’s return to TV production.

Rush vs. King is the second match that’s been announced for Final Battle. EC3 vs. Jay Briscoe is also set for the PPV.

ROH TV results: Shane Taylor vs. Brody King

Date: 11/30/2020

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

The Big Takeaway: Josh Woods defeated Jay Lethal in a Pure Rules contest. Brody King defeated Shane Taylor in a brutal, hard-hitting hoss fight. Matt Taven debuted a new talk show, and Mark Briscoe pondered his tag team future.

We began this week’s show with The Foundation. Jonathan Gresham introduced his illustrious faction, staking their claim on Ring Of Honor. Jay Lethal claimed that they aren’t the bad guys, and that they’re just trying to restore honor to their great company. Lethal revealed that the man under the red octopus mask is former ROH Tag Team Champion, Rhett Titus. Tracy Williams told Titus to not remove his mask just yet, because it would just lead to more lack of appreciation. Williams said that they’re here to rebuild Ring Of Honor brick by brick.

*****

We transitioned to the lovely Quinn McKay. She ran down the card for tonight’s show. Shane Taylor vs. Brody King and Josh Woods vs. Jay Lethal are on the schedule.

Next, a package for Josh Woods aired. Woods said he demanded perfection from himself in the Pure Tournament, but fell short to Jonathan Gresham. Woods said that his overall background is more impressive than Lethals career, touting his MMA and amateur wrestling experience. Woods said that he needs this victory over Lethal for fans to change how they feel about him.

We get another package, this time for Jay Lethal. Lethal said that it warms his heart to see pure professional wrestling back in ROH. Lethal called Josh Woods the most dangerous man in the company under pure rules.

Josh Woods pinned Jay Lethal in a Pure Rules contest. (14:02)

Code Of Honor was adhered to. Woods gained control early with a high wristlock. Woods attempted an armbar early which forced Lethal to use his first rope break. Each competitor gets 3 rope breaks under Pure rules. Woods began ground and pound on Lethal, holding him down for multiple pinning maneuvers. Lethal got back some control by countering an armbar with a cartwheel dropkick.

Back from commercial, Lethal had Woods in a camel clutch. This caused Woods to use his first rope break. Woods tried to lift Lethal up for a brainbuster, but his back gave out mid-maneuver. Lethal and Woods began trading brutal forearms to the skull when out of nowhere Woods hit a bridging German Suplex for a two count. Woods rolled out of the ring, but was immediately hit with a Lethal suicide dive.

Lethal threw Woods back in the ring, went to the top rope and attempted his Macho Man elbow drop, but Woods caught him in an armbar. Lethal escaped quickly and went for the Lethal Injection, but Woods caught him again with a rear naked choke. Lethal motioned out quickly, but Woods locked in a knee bar as Lethal was crawling away. Lethal again found a way out of the kneebar, but Woods trapped his legs again and rolled him up for the 3 count.

*****

Matt Taven now has a talk show called Trending With Taven. His first guest was the returning Mike Bennett. Bennett said  that he has earned his way back to ROH, and that it’s good to be reunited with Taven. Bennett said Taven needed someone to have his back. A message flashed across the screen telling us that the rest of the interview was available on HonorClub.

*****

We got a promo from Mark Briscoe. He said being 12 time ROH Tag Team champions sounds better than being 11 time champions. He also stated his disappointment in Jay Briscoe for being so focused on EC3. Mark said he’s going for the tag titles with or without Jay.

*****

Brody King spoke on his upcoming match with Shane Taylor. King said he has many similarities with Taylor, but also a lot of differences. Brody said what motivates him is championship gold, while Taylor always feels like he’s owed something. He finished the promo saying that both him and Taylor are both rocks, but King is being shot out of a cannon.

Shane Taylor was next. Taylor said he had a weight lifted off his back after the match with Kenny King. The hypocrisy runs wild in Brody King’s fanbase because if he was running around in a ski mask like King is, everyone would judge him. Taylor said he has nothing against Brody King, but he’s going to beat him.

Brody King pinned Shane Taylor (13:03)

King and Taylor both attempted running shoulder tackles early, but neither man moved an inch. They traded forearms to the jawline before Brody took control and gave Taylor multiple chops and forearms to the chest. Both competitors spilled to the outside and King threw Taylor skull first into the ring post.

Back from commercial, Taylor planted King with a draping DDT off the apron to the floor. Taylor took control, hitting King with hard forearms every time he tried to stand up. Taylor backed up and drove his knee into King, which sent both men through the barricade. Taylor rolled back in the ring, starting a count on King. King rolled in at 19,  but Taylor went and began stomping on him immediately. King gained control of the contest by draping Taylor on the ropes and hitting a cannonball on Taylor’s back, giving King a two count. King lifted Taylor’s dead weight and hit a Death Valley driver into the turnbuckle.

Both men are exchanging open palm strikes and forearms following a commercial break. King hit a running swing slam, only getting a two count on Taylor. King tried to follow up with a powerbomb, but Taylor hit a package piledriver with King kicking out at 2.9. King sprung up fast and hit a burning lariat on Taylor, who powered out at a 1 count. King followed up with another burning lariat, which resulted in a pinfall.

*****

Final Thoughts:

I have a hot take: Shane Taylor has been the MVP of ROH since its return. He has put on four high quality matches, and he’s such a great talker. He’s being booked very strongly, even being protected in a loss to Brody King, who also looks phenomenal and seems to be on a collision course with Rush heading into Final Battle.

The Foundation has potential to be an all-time great ROH stable, on the levels of The Age Of The Fall or Generation Next. I’m not sure about the addition of Rhett Titus, but i’ll give it a chance. Lethal vs Woods was a fun watch; Woods has that smug star quality about him that a wrestler needs to succeed.

ROH TV results: Brody King vs. Dalton Castle

The Big Takeaway:

The returning Brody King defeated Dalton Castle while Dak Draper beat Brian Johnson in a Pure rules match.

Show Recap:

Quinn McKay congratulated Jonathan Gresham on his win over Tracy Williams in the Pure Championship Tournament finals. There was a post match promo from Gresham degrading both the ROH World title and the champion, Rush.

Gresham was joined by his new faction “The Foundation” which includes Jay Lethal, Tracy Williams, and an individual in a red octopus mask. He claimed that the Pure Championship now means more than the World championship.

Dak Draper pinned Brian Johnson in a Pure rules match (10:48)

Johnson immediately used his first and only closed first. He stayed on the attack and sent Draper to the outside, following it up with a suicide dive. Draper made his way back in the ring and used his only closed fist. Draper dumped Johnson out of the ring for a 17 count. Johnson returned to the ring, and Draper began to work on Johnson’s left arm leading into a commercial.

During the break, Draper suplexed Johnson off the top rope. Draper had Johnson on the turnbuckle and powe rbombed him off the middle rope. Johnson used his second rope break to break up the pin. Both men exchanged a series of pinning combinations, all resulting in two counts. Johnson dove through the middle rope and tried to pin Draper with his feet on the rope, costing him his own third and final rope break. Draper recovered and hit the Magnum K.O. for the win.

— Brody King said he has been violent all of his life, but has avoided drugs and alcohol. He has decided to be on his own and stand up as his own man as a singles competitor with his eyes on Rush.

— Dalton Castle claimed he’s more dangerous than given credit for. He said that King’s size does scare him, but he has a game plan. Castle said he needs to focus his rage into his wrestling abilities, rather than other things.

Brody King pinned Dalton Castle (13:43)

King immediately backed Castle in the corner and kicked him in the gut. Castle rolled out of the corner and took King down from the lower ankle. Castle dropped multiple knees into King’s back. Castle then got backed into the corner and was crushed by a running splash.

King worked over Castle’s neck. He dragged Castle to his feet, but Castle hooked his waist. King backed Castle into the corner, but Castle sprung back and hit a match shifting DDT. As King made his way back to his feet, Castle jumped on his back and tried to lock in a sleeper hold. King shook him off, but Castle retaliated and hit a running knee. King came back to his feet and spiked Castle with his signature piledriver that got a two count.

We returned from break and King launched Castle over the barricade. They got back in the ring at 12  and Castle hit a running knee, only picking up a two count. King hit a nasty running clothesline and followed it up with another spike piledriver, this time getting the three count.

Next week:

Shane Taylor vs. Kenny King and Soldiers of Savagery (SOS) vs. The Briscoes.

Final Thoughts:

While this week’s episode didn’t have the big fight feel that accompanied the Pure Championship tournament, it was still a solid episode. Dak Draper is someone to keep your eye on. It’s also nice to see Brody King venture away from Villian Enterprises and try his own thing. At the same time, I wonder where that leaves Flip Gordon and PCO.

New participants, matches announced for NWA Crockett Cup 2020

The first teams for the Crockett Cup have been announced, while a couple of new matches have been added to the card.

NWA announced today on their Circle Squared program that The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, Flip Gordon & Brody King, Rey Horus & Flamita, and Thom Latimer & Royce Issacs are the first four teams to enter the tournament. There will be three more teams announced.

Like last year, there will be a match that will determine the final spot in the tournament. The rules, however, will be different. It will instead be a gauntlet-style match where both tag teams and singles wrestlers will be eligible to enter. Two wrestlers will start, and every 90 seconds a new participant will enter the match. The last two participants remaining will be the last team to enter the tournament.

Tim Storm, Ricky Starks, and Zicky Dice have been announced for the gauntlet match.

It was also announced that Trevor Murdoch will get a chance at the NWA National championship, as he will face champion Aron Stevens.

The show will be headlined by Nick Aldis defending the NWA World’s Heavyweight title against Marty Scurll, who is putting $500,000 on the line.

This year’s Crockett Cup will take place on April 19 at the Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia.

Two matches added to ROH 18th Anniversary PPV

ROH has confirmed two more matches for this Friday’s 18th Anniversary pay-per-view.

Villain Enterprises stablemates PCO & Brody King will team against Rey Horus & Alex Zayne at the PPV. Eli Isom is also set to face Bully Ray in a singles match.

Bully Ray interrupted Isom vs. LSG at Bound By Honor on February 28. Isom then challenged Bully Ray to a match. Bully Ray won and went to attack Isom with a steel chair after, but Cheeseburger and Caprice Coleman came out to make the save.

At Gateway to Honor the next night, Isom made a save for Coleman and Cheeseburger after Bully Ray defeated Coleman. Isom went to put Bully Ray through a table, but Bully Ray low blowed him and powerbombed him through it.

ROH hyped that Bully Ray “has said that he’ll leave ROH for good if anyone can defeat him” and Isom is determined to rid the company of him.

Zayne made his ROH debut by defeating Bandido at Honor Reigns Supreme in January. The night before that, Bandido, Flamita & Horus won the ROH Six-Man Tag Team titles from Villain Enterprises.

Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas,  Nevada will host ROH’s 18th Anniversary PPV this Friday and ROH Past vs. Present on Saturday.

Here’s the updated card for the Anniversary PPV:

Past vs. Present is taking place at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, March 14. It’s part of ROH’s 18th Anniversary weekend. Sam’s Town Live is also hosting the promotion’s 18th Anniversary pay-per-view on March 13, and tickets for both shows went on sale to the general public today.

Jeff Cobb vs. Brody King will take place on the Death Before Dishonor pre-show later this month. The pre-show will air for free starting at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, September 27. That’s a half hour before the Death Before Dishonor main card begins.

In addition to the outlets where the PPV is available, the Death Before Dishonor pre-show will stream live on Facebook and YouTube.

ROH’s announcement of Cobb vs. King claimed that they’re “presenting this main event-caliber match as a special treat for fans and to once again show everyone in the wrestling world why it is the absolute best wrestling on the planet.”

Cobb defeated Matt Taven, Kenny King, and Jay Lethal in a Defy or Deny match at Honor for All last month. The win set up that Cobb will challenge for the ROH World Championship at ROH’s Honor United show in Bolton, England on October 27.

Taven is defending his ROH World title against Rush in the main event of Death Before Dishonor.

Brody King holds the ROH Six-Man Tag Team titles with his Villain Enterprises stablemates Marty Scurll & PCO. Scurll vs. Colt Cabana and PCO vs. Kenny King are set for Death Before Dishonor. Both are first-round matches in the tournament to decide a World title challenger for Final Battle.

The night before Mass Hysteria, LifeBlood & PJ Black defeated Villain Enterprises (Scurll, PCO, King & Flip Gordon) at Manhattan Mayhem.

Villain Enterprises retained against Haskins, Williams & Black at June’s Best in the World pay-per-view. LifeBlood then defeated Villain Enterprises in a non-title street fight at the post-PPV television tapings.

ROH TV results: Two title matches on episode 400

From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman called the action.

ROH Six-Man Tag Team Champions Villain Enterprises (PCO, Marty Scurll & Brody King) defeated Jay Lethal, Jeff Cobb & Rush to retain their titles

Lethal and PCO started it off for their respective teams. Lethal nailed PCO with a lot of kicks, but PCO was barely phased. PCO begged Lethal to dive on him, which distracted Lethal long enough for Scurll to cut off Lethal. PCO tagged in Scurll, and Lethal tagged in Rush.

Kenny King and Amy Rose joined the announce team mid-match and Kenny immediately brought up his “eye surgery.” Throughout the match, he kept asking what was happening because he couldn’t see.

In the ring, Rush and Scurll wrestled to a stalemate. Rush tagged in Cobb, and Scurll tagged in King. A quick exchange led to Cobb nailing a dropkick. However, King fired back and landed a running crossbody and then pulled off a hurricanrana on Cobb.

King was sent to the floor by Rush. Lethal dove on him, but King caught him. With a kick assist by Scurll, King suplexed Lethal onto the floor.

After the break, Lethal was in the ring with King attempting to suplex him but instead used a cutter to drop the big man. King tagged in Scurll, and Lethal tagged in Rush. Rush ran wild and decimated his foes until he got arrogant and Scurll cut him off with a superkick to the knee.

Scurll called for the chicken wing, but Rush nailed him with a headbutt and tagged in Cobb, who came in and gave two stalling suplexes to King and PCO. He then launched Scurll and followed it up with a moonsault.

PCO broke up the pin, but Cobb managed to hoist King and Scurll up at the same time for a double suplex. This brought in PCO, who came in and tossed Cobb to the floor. King hit a flipping dive onto Cobb and Lethal, then PCO hit a Scurll-assisted flip dive of his own and took out all three of their opponents.

Back in the ring, Scurll and King combined forces to hit a sunset German suplex on Cobb. They then hit a 619 and cannonball combo on him. Scurll tagged in PCO and grabbed Cobb, but he ate a Cobb superkick. Lethal then came off the top with an elbow, but PCO stood up. Rush then hit him with an overhead belly-to-belly.

Lethal again hit a top rope elbow, but Scurll broke up the pin. In the chaos, Lethal hit a Lethal Injection on Scurll and went for it again on King, but King caught him on his shoulders and landed a crazy spinning powerbomb. PCO followed it up with a moonsault, which got the win for Villain Enterprises.

During the commercial, as Lethal was leaving, Kenny King jumped Lethal from behind and used his cane to choke him out.

ROH World Champion Matt Taven defeated Flip Gordon to retain his title

After an early exchange sent Taven to the floor, Gordon hit a suicide dive. As Gordon was on the ring apron, TK O’Ryan attempted to get involved. That distracted Gordon enough to allow Taven to knock him to the floor. Taven launched Gordon into the ring post and then threw him back into the ring.

Gordon got the advantage and landed a kick and a one-legged moonsault. Taven kicked out at two and bailed to the floor. Taven baited him to the outside and then drilled Gordon in the knee. Taven went to follow that up with a running dropkick to the floor, but Gordon evaded and landed a superkick. Gordon charged after Taven, but Taven hip tossed him into the guardrail.

After the commercial, Taven was attacking Gordon’s injured knee with punches. Gordon fought to his feet and landed a knee to the head of Taven. However, Taven kept going back to the knee with a dragon screw leg whip, which sent Gordon to the floor. As he was out there, Taven distracted the referee. That allowed O’Ryan to attack Gordon.

Taven locked on a half Boston crab back inside the ring, but Gordon got to the ropes. Finally, Gordon managed to hit a springboard spear to buy himself some recovery time. A striking exchange ended with a huge knee by Gordon. He then hit an inverted driver to get a two count.

After the final break, Taven had Gordon perched atop the turnbuckle and landed a superplex, but it was Gordon who hooked the inside cradle. He only got a two count. Gordon fired up and landed a Russian leg sweep from the second rope and a spinning Falcon Arrow, getting a two count.

Taven spit in the face of Gordon and landed a pop-up powerbomb and a Just the Tip knee. He went for a cover, but Gordon kicked out at two.

Gordon fought back up and hit a swinging TKO. He went up top, but as he was on the top rope, the red balloons floated up from ringside, distracting Gordon long enough to allow Taven to hit the Climax DDT off the top to pick up the victory and retain his title.

NWA crowns three new champions at Crockett Cup

Three new NWA champions were crowned tonight at the Crockett Cup tournament in Concord, North Carolina.

The ROH team of Brody King and PCO defeated Royce Isaacs and Thomas Latimer (formerly Bram from Impact) to win not only the Crockett Cup tournament, but the NWA Tag Team titles, which have been vacant since 2017. Isaacs and Latimer won the wildcard battle royal and earned a spot in the tournament in the first match of the show, but lost in the finals after PCO hit a moonsault on Latimer following a fireman’s carry Michinoku driver from King.

Earlier in the card, Allysin Kay defeated Santana Garrett to win the vacant NWA Women’s championship. Garrett went to the top rope for a shining star press, but Kay moved out of the way and pinned Garrett with a spear to win the championship for the first time.  The match originally was supposed to be Jazz defending the title against Kay, but on 4/22 it was announced that she would be vacating the title after 948 days due to personal and medical reasons.

Colt Cabana later defeated Willie Mack to win the NWA National title after scoring the win with the Superman pin, ending Mack’s 184 day run as champion. James Storm made an appearance after the match, challenging Cabana to a future title match.
