Sammy Guevara to have mystery partner for ROH Death Before Dishonor title match

With Dustin Rhodes out of action for a while, Sammy Guevara will have a new partner starting with ROH Death Before Dishonor.

Tony Khan has announced that Guevara and a yet-to-be-revealed partner will defend the ROH Tag Team titles against The Outrunners (Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd) at Friday night’s event in Philadelphia. This won’t be the only title defense for Guevara that night, though, with Khan also confirming that Guevara will join Ross & Marshall Von Erich for an ROH Six-Man Tag Team title defense against Shane Taylor Promotions (Shane Taylor, Shawn Dean & Carlie Bravo).

Rhodes — who has not wrestled since the end of July — underwent a double knee replacement last week. He was a double champion in ROH, holding the promotion’s Tag Team titles with Guevara and the Six-Man belts with The Von Erichs.

Despite the injury, the 56-year-old Rhodes has promised that this will not be the end of his in-ring career.

Death Before Dishonor is taking place at the 2300 Arena in Philly amid AEW’s ongoing residency at the venue. The show will stream live for Honor Club subscribers starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Announced during Saturday’s AEW Collision, one of the quarterly-ish Ring of Honor streaming specials will now take place on Friday, August 29th instead of Friday, September 5th. The event will still take place at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, the former ECW Arena.

No reason was given for the change.

It will be part of AEW’s multi-event residency in Philadelphia that begins on Wednesday, August 27th and runs through September 11th with three Dynamites, three Collisions, and the ROH streaming special.

In April, AEW moved Death Before Dishonor from Friday, July 11th during All In week to September 5th, putting Supercard of Honor in its place instead.

In a bout first announced on social media early Sunday morning Eastern time, Katsuyori Shibata is set to defend the ROH Pure Championship against former title holder Daniel Garcia o the Friday, July 21 Death Before Dishonor PPV.

ROW owner and storyline chairman of the board of directors of ROH Tony Khan announced the match in a kayfabe press conference video in the social media announcement.

Garcia picked up a pinfall victory over Shibata in a tag team match on the June 21 episode of AEW Dynamite, and Garcia and Shibata have teased the match repeatedly on Ring of Honor TV over the past couple of months.

Also set for Death Before Dishonor but not yet officially announced, the winner of Thursday’s Ring of Honor TV title eliminator match between Dalton Castle & Shane Taylor will challenge Samoa Joe for the TV title at Death Before Dishonor. That match was taped at Saturday night’s AEW Collision taping.

Additionally, the ROH World Championship will presumably be on the line, with Claudio Castagnoli defending against an unnamed opponent. Khan promised to address the World title situation after Wednesday’s Blood & Guts match on Dynamite where Castagnoli will compete. Castagnoli had been set to defend against Mark Briscoe, but a knee injury forced Briscoe out of the match.

Tournament to decide Samoa Joe’s ROH Death Before Dishonor challenger

ROH is holding a tournament to determine the next challenger for Samoa Joe’s TV title.

The four-person tournament began on Thursday’s episode of ROH television. Dalton Castle and Shane Taylor booked their spots in the finals with respective wins over Tony Nese and Shawn Dean. Castle vs. Taylor in the tournament finals will take place on ROH TV next week.

The winner of Castle vs. Taylor advances to challenge Joe for the ROH TV title at Death Before Dishonor.

Death Before Dishonor is being held at CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey on Friday, July 21. It’s ROH’s first pay-per-view since March’s Supercard of Honor.

Joe has held the ROH TV Championship since April 2022. His most recent defense of the title was against Matt Sydal on ROH TV last month.

On the most recent episode of AEW Collision, Joe lost to CM Punk in the semifinals of the men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.

Castle and Taylor are both former TV champions in ROH. Their reigns happened while ROH was owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Next Thursday’s ROH TV is airing the night before Death Before Dishonor. Also on the episode, ROH will address who is going to be Claudio Castagnoli’s Death Before Dishonor challenger. Castagnoli was supposed to face Mark Briscoe at the PPV, but Briscoe had to be pulled from the match due to injury.

Last year’s Death Before Dishonor aired on Saturday, July 23 from Lowell, Massachusetts and was headlined by FTR vs. The Briscoes in a two-out-of-three falls match for the ROH World Tag Team Championship. Claudio Castagnoli also defeated Jonathan Gresham in last year’s opening contest to capture the ROH World Championship.

RIng of Honor TV airs Thursdays on the HonorClub streaming service.

Claudio Castagnoli wins ROH World title at Death Before Dishonor

Claudio Castagnoli is the ROH World Champion.

Castagnoli defeated Jonathan Gresham to win the title for the first time in the opening match of Saturday’s Death Before Dishonor. The finish came when Castagnoli pinned Gresham with the Ricola bomb. After the match, confetti fell as Castagnoli celebrated his first world title win.

During the Death Before Dishonor Zero Hour pre-show, Prince Nana revealed that he had bought Tully Blanchard Enterprises and was in Gresham’s corner during the match. However, he didn’t interfere.

Gresham had been champion for 225 days, defeating Jay Lethal for the vacant title at ROH Final Battle back in December. He was originally set to face Bandido, but Bandido was unable to make the show due to testing positive for COVID. Gresham, who carried the original ROH World title, and Bandido, who carried the most recent ROH World title design, met to unify both titles at ROH Supercard of Honor in April. Gresham defeated Bandido for both titles.

Stipulation added to FTR vs. The Briscoes at ROH Death Before Dishonor

FTR and The Briscoes’ ROH Tag Team title rematch will be conducted under two-out-of-three falls rules.

During an open forum between the two teams on Friday, it was announced that FTR vs. The Briscoes at Death Before Dishonor will be a two-out-of-three falls match. Death Before Dishonor is taking place at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 23.

FTR proposed the two-out-of-three falls stipulation after The Briscoes claimed that FTR were the fresher team in their first meeting. The Briscoes said they were wrestling multiple times per week while FTR only had to occasionally wrestle on AEW Dynamite. The Briscoes called FTR’s a win a fluke and said Supercard of Honor was the luckiest night of FTR’s lives.

In a match-of-the-year candidate, FTR defeated The Briscoes at Supercard of Honor this April to win the ROH Tag Team titles.

Here’s the updated card for the Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view:

  • Two-out-of-three falls match: ROH Tag Team Champions FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) defend against The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe)
  • ROH Women’s World Champion Mercedes Martinez defends against Serena Deeb
  • ROH Television Champion Samoa Joe defends against Jay Lethal
  • ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta defends against Daniel Garcia

Martinez & Deeb teamed together to defeat Kayla Sparks & Christina Marie on Rampage last Friday. But Deeb turned against Martinez after the match and set her sights on the ROH Women’s World Championship. Deeb put Martinez in the Serenity Lock before then picking up the ROH Women’s World title belt.

Martinez visually tapped out while Deeb had the Serenity Lock applied.
