WrestleMania Week: What We’re Looking Forward To

With WrestleMania 33 on Sunday night as the main attraction, the biggest wrestling week of the year is now fully underway in Orlando.

There are so many promotions putting on events in the area and hundreds of wrestlers scheduled to make appearances. And for those not attending the festivities, more shows than ever are streaming live on various platforms.

The WWE Network will have the 2017 Hall of Fame ceremony, NXT TakeOver, and WrestleMania in successive nights, FloSlam is putting on a full lineup of shows, and ROH’s Supercard of Honor XI is available on iPPV.

With all that is going on, there would seemingly be something that appeals to every type of fan. We’ve assembled our staff to look ahead to the weekend and briefly preview what they’re most looking forward to. Our contributors are:

Joey Janela’s Spring Break —

By Mike DellaCamera

In my years as a fan I can’t remember anything quite like Joey Janela’s Spring Break. How do you even describe it? “Yeah, this wrestler fantasy booked a card that has a guitarist from a rock band, half of The Rockers, Glacier, Dan Severn…and some of the best up-and-coming indie guys…and it’s at midnight…and it’s at a bar.”

Okay. What? In a weekend filled with all-star talent — look at the WWN shows, my god — I’m really excited to see something that is completely different. Listen, this could be an abject disaster (but I don’t think it will be) or it could be the absolute highlight of the weekend. Janela has gotten a lot of attention recently with the release of the documentary short “Please Don’t Die Joey Janela” so I’m excited to see how his debut as a booker goes.

It’s always great to see something new and exciting, hopefully no one dies.

Kurt Angle’s Hall of Fame induction —

By Will Cooling

I dunno, it’s hard to be in a positive mood given how much WWE has mishandled the booking of not just WrestleMania but TakeOver too. WWE is either burying its most interesting matches on Axxess or the WrestleMania pre-show, or has failed to book them at all.

I mean, for the love of god, Samoa Joe, Chris Hero, and Finn Balor somehow aren’t wrestling this weekend. I’d love to say I’m really looking forward to Neville vs. Austin Aries, but I just don’t think they’re going to get the time. I’m not even convinced that Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens will either.

Probably the highlight of the weekend will be Kurt Angle’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Nobody took to the sport so quickly, and few have come as close to being destroyed by the business, as The Real American Hero. For all the great moments he’s given us all, and for managing to put his life back together, Angle truly deserves this moment for us to all say thank you.

Oh, and Matt Riddle vs. Trent Seven at Friday’s PROGRESS show should be all sorts of fun.

By Paul Fontaine

The thing that I’m looking forward to most on WrestleMania weekend is the return of Kurt Angle. On Friday night, Angle will officially return to the WWE fold as he’s inducted into the Hall of Fame. That ceremony is always a lot of fun and is good for a few laughs, tears, and great memories as we look back on the careers of all the great wrestlers that will be inducted on that night.

I’ve always been a big fan of Kurt Angle, and it will be great to reflect on his career during that ceremony. Even more than that, though, I’m anticipating something more for Angle that could take place either on Sunday at the WrestleMania show itself or on the post-Mania edition of Monday Night Raw.

Angle is still capable of performing very well in the ring and the last couple of years he’s taken it relatively easy, so I think that it will be interesting to see just what he does now that he’s officially back.

In that same vein, I’m hopeful that a couple other contemporaries of Angle’s will also make their return on Sunday or Monday and render the current tag team division OBSOLETE.

Christopher Daniels vs. Dalton Castle —

By Jeremy Peeples

ROH’s Supercard of Honor XI houses some intriguing matches, but the most bold match is definitely Christopher Daniels vs. Dalton Castle. ROH, by featuring Castle as more than just a campy act, has made his character stand out as a star. Castle himself has done such a great job that everyone affiliated with the act is over.

Rather than relegate him to being pure comedy, he has been given a serious edge and is now a somewhat viable contender for the World title. Should Castle win it? Well, now it would certainly make news, but it does seem too early for Daniels to lose the title — and Castle is better served chasing it for a while.

He and The Boys being six-man tag champs makes more sense for his first title win in the company, but within a couple of years, it’s easy to see him making a regular run for ROH’s top championships.

NXT TakeOver: Orlando —

By Zach Dominello

For me it’s NXT TakeOver. But only for the outcome of the match between Bobby Roode and Shinsuke Nakamura. I’ve never wanted Nakamura to lose a match so bad. And that’s just so he can finally leave NXT and make his main roster debut.

WrestleMania 33 —

By Joseph Currier

It’s entirely too much of a copout to say that what I’m most looking forward to this week is the sheer amount of professional wrestling that’s going on, but that’s probably what my answer is.

The best part about WrestleMania is that it turns a single city into a global hub of wrestling. WWE’s marquee event of the year serves as a backdrop for so many wrestlers and promotions to put their best foot forward. It provides an opportunity for people to prove themselves on what may be the biggest stage they see all year.

NXT TakeOver: Orlando should be another card that delivers despite a lack of buzz heading into it. There are so many interesting things on FloSlam. PROGRESS has a stacked show planned. And The Hardys vs. The Young Bucks at ROH’s Supercard of Honor may be the best match that takes place all weekend.

But if I’m being honest, WrestleMania itself is probably still the singular event that I’m anticipating most. Even though last year was a bit of a drag, there’s still something special about WrestleMania that has inexplicably grabbed me within the last few days.

I’ve been constantly checking Twitter for updates about the set construction. I’m hopeful that some of the midcard matches will deliver. I still have no idea what to expect from Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar. And I may have even caught myself contemplating whether John Cena will propose to Nikki Bella or not.

Maybe it’s just the WWE marketing machine getting to me at the last minute, but I’m excited for WrestleMania. I just hope I feel that way when it enters its sixth hour on Sunday.

The Raw after WrestleMania —

By Josh Nason

Since it basically feels like an extension of WrestleMania week, I’m going with Raw on Monday which feels like a season premiere after the grand finale of Mania.

While some may get annoyed with the crowd going into business for itself, there is a certain energy to the show that isn’t found at most Raws throughout the rest of the calendar year. We usually get a few storyline farewells, a few surprises, and a sure-to-be-changed direction for the next few months.

So the thing I’m most excited for is an event the day after WrestleMania. Go figure.

Naomi added to SmackDown Women’s title match at WrestleMania 33

With WrestleMania 33 just days away, Tuesday night’s SmackDown brought some final clarifications about the show’s card.

Naomi was added to the SmackDown Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania after returning from injury. She originally won the title at Elimination Chamber in February before being forced to vacate it shortly after, though her knee injury was never considered to be particularly serious.

It was also clarified that Alexa Bliss would be defending her title against Naomi, Becky Lynch, Mickie James, Natalya, and Carmella in a six-pack challenge after the match had previously only been vaguely referred to as her putting her title on the line against every available woman on the SmackDown roster.

But not all of SmackDown’s titles will be defended at WrestleMania, with Tag Team Champions The Usos joining the list of confirmed entrants for the 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

As was noted in today’s Daily Update, the battle royal, SmackDown Women’s title match, and Neville vs. Austin Aries will air on the WrestleMania pre-show. The updated card is:

  • Universal Champion Goldberg defending against Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defending against Randy Orton
  • The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns
  • Triple H vs. Seth Rollins in a non-sanctioned match
  • John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse
  • AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon
  • United States Champion Chris Jericho defending against Kevin Owens
  • Raw Women’s Champion Bayley defending against Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Nia Jax in a four-way elimination match
  • Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose defending against Baron Corbin
  • Raw Tag Team Champions Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson defending against Enzo Amore & Big Cass and Cesaro & Sheamus in a triple threat ladder match
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Becky Lynch, Mickie James, Natalya, Naomi, and Carmella in a six-pack challenge (kickoff show)
  • WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville defending against Austin Aries (kickoff show)
  • The 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal (kickoff show)

Ladder stipulation set for WWE WrestleMania 33 tag title match

After the stipulation was set up last night, WWE officially announced today that Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson vs. Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Cesaro & Sheamus at WrestleMania 33 would now be a triple threat ladder match for the Raw Tag Team Championship.

Gallows & Anderson attacked Cesaro & Sheamus with a ladder in a segment on the go-home episode of Raw. A three-way ladder brawl later broke out as the storyline continued, with Sheamus requiring 15 stitches after a mishap left him with a gruesome cut over his eye.

This will be the third straight year with a ladder match on the WrestleMania card. The Intercontinental title was defended in ladder matches the last two years.

Last night’s Raw also saw more entrants announced for the 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. The current list of participants is:

  • Sami Zayn
  • Braun Strowman
  • Goldust
  • R-Truth
  • Curtis Axel
  • Primo
  • Epico
  • Bo Dallas
  • Jinder Mahal
  • Apollo Crews
  • Mojo Rawley
  • Big Show
  • Curt Hawkins

Seth Rollins vs. Triple H announced for WWE WrestleMania 33

The last of WrestleMania 33’s key matches was officially added to the card on Monday night.

After Seth Rollins signed the “hold harmless agreement” that Triple H challenged him to accept last week, Rollins vs. Triple H is now set for WrestleMania. It will be a non-sanctioned match, with the storyline being that Rollins can’t hold the company liable if Triple H injures him.

Rollins originally suffered a legitimate torn MCL during a brawl with Samoa Joe on Raw in January. His WrestleMania status appeared to be in doubt for the second year in a row, though it was turned into an angle in the lead-up to the show.

It was also announced earlier on Monday that Bayley vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania would now be an elimination match.

WrestleMania 33 will take place on Sunday at Camping World Stadium. The pre-show begins at 5 p.m. ET before the main card starts at 7 p.m. ET. The updated card is:

  • Universal Champion Goldberg defending against Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defending against Randy Orton
  • The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns
  • Triple H vs. Seth Rollins in a non-sanctioned match
  • John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse
  • AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon
  • United States Champion Chris Jericho defending against Kevin Owens
  • Raw Women’s Champion Bayley defending against Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Nia Jax in a four-way elimination match
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against every available woman on the SmackDown roster
  • Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose defending against Baron Corbin
  • Raw Tag Team Champions Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson defending against Enzo Amore & Big Cass and Cesaro & Sheamus in a triple threat match
  • The 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal (kickoff show)
  • WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville defending against Austin Aries (kickoff show)

Pitbull & Al Roker to appear at WWE WrestleMania 33

On a day that should bring more announcements for WrestleMania (including the addition of Triple H vs. Seth Rollins to the card on tonight’s go-home episode of Raw), WWE revealed some of the celebrities who will be involved with WrestleMania 33 on Monday.

It was announced that Pitbull would be performing at WrestleMania after the main card broadcast kicks off. He’ll be joined by Flo Rida, LunchMoney Lewis, and Stephen Marley. Pitbull, Flo Rida, and Lewis’ song “Greenlight” is the official theme of WrestleMania 33.

As was noted previously, Tinashe is set to perform “America the Beautiful” on the show.

News of Pitbull’s performance came after John Cena co-hosted a portion of the Today Show this morning, where he invited Al Roker to be the guest ring announcer for Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse at WrestleMania.

The New Day opened the New York Stock Exchange as well, including presenting the president of the NYSE with the first of their “New Day Pops.”

Shawn Michaels: WWE asked me to wrestle AJ Styles at WrestleMania

While Shawn Michaels has maintained that he’s retired since last facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26 nearly seven years ago, it hasn’t been without WWE making efforts to lure him back to the ring.

That seemingly happened again this year, as Michaels said during an appearance on this week’s Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast that he turned down a potential match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33.

When asked about Styles vs. Shane McMahon at WrestleMania, Michaels said that WWE approached him when coming up with plans for Styles.

“I could’ve had that match,” Michaels told Roberts. “They did not have an opponent for AJ at WrestleMania.”

But Michaels reiterated that he was retired, telling WWE that he wished Styles was in the company 10 years ago. Michaels said that he has only seen Styles wrestle once, which was against John Cena during this year’s Royal Rumble, but thought that he would have a pretty decent match with Shane.

Michaels later said on the podcast that he’ll be involved with the WrestleMania 33 pre-show on the WWE Network, but called it unlikely that he’ll be doing anything else on the show unless something changes at the last minute.

Dean Ambrose vs. Baron Corbin set for WWE WrestleMania 33

With WrestleMania less than two weeks away, the card for WWE’s biggest show of the year is up to 12 announced matches after Tuesday night.

AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon and Dean Ambrose defending the Intercontinental title against Baron Corbin were officially added to the lineup on SmackDown. The storyline between Styles and Shane reached its breaking point last Tuesday, but the match wasn’t officially announced until this week.

Ambrose accepted Corbin’s challenge to put his title on the line at WrestleMania, but only after distracting Corbin during his match against Randy Orton on SmackDown.

The biggest issue still to be addressed for WrestleMania is the confirmation of Triple H vs. Seth Rollins, which figures to be settled next Monday after Triple H challenged Rollins to accept a non-sanctioned match against him.

The updated card for WrestleMania 33 is:

  • Universal Champion Goldberg defending against Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defending against Randy Orton
  • The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns
  • United States Champion Chris Jericho defending against Kevin Owens
  • John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse
  • AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon
  • Raw Women’s Champion Bayley defending against Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Nia Jax in a fatal four-way match
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against every available woman on the SmackDown roster
  • Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose defending against Baron Corbin
  • WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville defending against Austin Aries
  • Raw Tag Team Champions Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson defending against Enzo Amore & Big Cass and Cesaro & Sheamus in a triple threat match
  • The 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse set for WWE WrestleMania 33

Another one of WrestleMania’s key matches is officially in place.

It was announced on tonight’s SmackDown that John Cena & Nikki Bella would face The Miz & Maryse in a mixed tag team match at WrestleMania. That match had been expected for weeks and Dave Meltzer reported it was the plan in the February 6th edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Miz and Maryse continued to verbally attack Cena and Bella on SmackDown before the announcement, which brought the faces out to the ring. Daniel Bryan then made the match after Miz and Maryse tried to back away from confrontation.

There are now nine matches set for WrestleMania 33. The updated card for the show, which will take place on April 2nd in Orlando, Florida, is:

  • Universal Champion Goldberg defending against Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defending against Randy Orton
  • The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns
  • John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse
  • Raw Women’s Champion Bayley defending against Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair in a triple threat match
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against every available woman on the SmackDown roster
  • United States Champion Chris Jericho defending against Kevin Owens
  • Raw Tag Team Champions Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson defending against Enzo Amore & Big Cass and Cesaro & Sheamus in a triple threat match
  • The 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns announced for WWE WrestleMania 33

WWE made another match for WrestleMania official on Monday afternoon.

In a matchup that was made apparent by their interactions in the Royal Rumble and in the main event segment of last week’s Raw, The Undertaker will face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33.

There should be more of an indication given on the direction for other matches at WrestleMania tonight as well, with Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Cesaro & Sheamus in a tag team title number one contender’s match already scheduled for Raw.

Undertaker vs. Reigns is the seventh match officially announced for WrestleMania, which will take place on April 2nd at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The updated card for the show is:

  • Universal Champion Goldberg defending against Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defending against Randy Orton
  • The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns
  • Raw Women’s Champion Bayley defending against Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair in a triple threat match
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against every available woman on the SmackDown roster
  • United States Champion Chris Jericho defending against Kevin Owens
  • The 2017 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton announced for WWE WrestleMania 33

The WWE Championship match for WrestleMania is — finally — officially set.

Randy Orton defeated AJ Styles on SmackDown to get his title match with Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania. That match became apparent after Orton won the Royal Rumble and Wyatt won the championship at Elimination Chamber, but there was a storyline over the last few weeks of WWE trying to find a new challenger until Orton turned his back on Wyatt.

WWE shot an angle after SmackDown went off the air, with Styles continuing his feud with Shane McMahon by confronting him and blaming him for not getting the title shot.

Other matches for WrestleMania 33 were set up on SmackDown as well. It was announced that Alexa Bliss would defend her title against every available woman on the show’s roster, though no further details were revealed.

Mojo Rawley and Apollo Crews were also confirmed as the first two entrants in this year’s Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on Tuesday night.

Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens set for WWE WrestleMania 33

With Fastlane out of the way, the build to WrestleMania picked up on Monday night’s episode of Raw.

The show began with the official announcement of Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens for WrestleMania 33. That match will be for Jericho’s United States Championship after their storyline led to Jericho distracting Owens as he dropped the Universal title on Sunday.

Raw ended with Roman Reigns and The Undertaker seemingly setting up their match for WrestleMania as well. Braun Strowman came out to call out Reigns, but got The Undertaker instead. Strowman backed off, leading to Reigns confronting Undertaker.

Reigns said that this was his yard now before they looked at the WrestleMania sign and Undertaker laid him out with a chokeslam.

As of now, WWE is also advertising that Bayley will defend her Raw Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks in a triple threat match at WrestleMania. We’ll see if WWE follows through with their plan to add Nia Jax and make that a fatal four-way over the next few weeks.

WrestleMania 33 will take place at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida on April 2nd.

Shaq: WrestleMania match against Big Show ‘probably’ isn’t happening

One of WrestleMania 33’s planned matches seems to be in serious doubt.

While responding to rumors surrounding his scheduled WrestleMania match against Big Show, Shaquille O’Neal said on his podcast this week that the bout “probably” won’t be happening.

“It’s not going to happen?” Shaq asked. “That’s probably right. It’s not my fault, that’s all you need to know. It ain’t my fault. Oh, it ain’t my fault.”

Shaq went on to say that the plans likely falling through have nothing to do with him or his management. He said that it isn’t definitive that the match is off yet, though things aren’t looking good. He claimed that he’s still training like it’s going to take place and challenged Big Show to meet him wherever he wants to meet, leaving the door open for this to be part of a storyline if the match does occur.

Big Show vs. Shaq had long been penciled in for WrestleMania in Orlando. Shaq appeared at WrestleMania 32 last year as a surprise entrant in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, where he had a face off with Big Show. They also did an angle where Shaq accepted Big Show’s challenge at the ESPY Awards last summer.

Much of the build for the match had been done on social media and based around the two attempting to get in shape for WrestleMania. But speculation that the match could possibly be off began to increase over the last couple of weeks.

In a WWE.com article about his recent weight loss, Big Show said that Shaq not taking the match seriously was why it may not be happening.

“I mean, here’s the thing. We shot this off at the ESPY Awards, Shaq said he’s in, I thought this would be a good match for fans to see two giants go at it. And I see Shaq riding around, singing karaoke and stopping in at Krispy Kreme. I’m like, ‘Hey! If you’re not gonna take it serious, find something else to do.'”

The New Day named as hosts of WWE WrestleMania 33

Given their status as one of the most prominent acts in WWE, it figured that The New Day would be playing a featured role at this year’s WrestleMania.

That role was announced on Monday as Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods revealed on TMZ that they would be hosting WrestleMania 33. The news puts into doubt whether the trio will be wrestling on the show.

Hosting duties have previously been handled by Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 30 and The Rock at WrestleMania 27.

Since dropping the Raw Tag Team Championship after the completion of their record-breaking reign and falling out of the title picture, The New Day have taken a bit of a step back on television. All three members were entrants in the Royal Rumble and have been involved in a storyline with Titus O’Neil.

Big E, Kingston, and Woods teamed against Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, and Rusev at last year’s WrestleMania, which led to a segment with Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, and Mick Foley after the match.

WrestleMania 33 takes place at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida on April 2nd.

Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena WWE title match set for SmackDown

After Bray Wyatt’s WWE Championship win at Elimination Chamber, the only thing that stood in the way of the official announcement of his WrestleMania match against Randy Orton was clearing up some loose ends on television.

One of those will be cleared on Tuesday night as Wyatt defends the WWE Championship against John Cena on SmackDown. The match was announced on Monday night during commercials that aired on Raw and by WWE on Twitter.

Wyatt won the title from Cena in an Elimination Chamber match in the main event of Sunday’s pay-per-view after eliminating both Cena and AJ Styles at the end of the match.

Though there are still seven episodes of SmackDown before WrestleMania, the build to WWE’s biggest show of the year should pick up steam on Tuesday night now that Elimination Chamber is out of the way.

Cena’s direction for WrestleMania should become apparent in the coming weeks, with WWE seemingly already starting the early build to the Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse mixed tag team match that Dave Meltzer has reported on in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar officially booked for WWE WrestleMania 33

Goldberg will be facing Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, Florida, but only after challenging Kevin Owens for the Universal Championship at Fastlane.

Both matches were officially set on tonight’s episode of Raw as Goldberg interrupted a segment with Owens and Chris Jericho in the ring. Goldberg quickly accepted Lesnar’s challenge for a rematch at WrestleMania before setting his sights on the Universal title.

Owens said that Goldberg vs. Lesnar would be perfect for the undercard of WrestleMania as he claimed that the Owens vs. Jericho match that the two had been setting up would be the main event. Goldberg then challenged Owens to a Universal title match at Fastlane, which Jericho accepted on behalf of Owens after Goldberg took Jericho’s list out of his hands.

Another match was also set for Fastlane on Monday night as it was announced that Roman Reigns would be taking on Braun Strowman at the upcoming pay-per-view. That match became apparent as their storyline continued at the Royal Rumble with Strowman costing Reigns his shot at the Universal title. Reigns then returned the favor as Strowman challenged Owens last week.

Fastlane will take place on March 5th at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It will be WWE’s last PPV before WrestleMania 33 on April 2nd.
