WWE’s in no rush to make new top-level stars, and that’s a problem | Opinion

WWE right now reminds me a lot of when Bob Backlund returned to the company in 1992.

The company continually pushed that the former WWE Champion, 43, was a grizzled veteran and was nearing the end of his career. Heel announcers like Jerry Lawler and Bobby Heenan would constantly berate him for being over the hill. Even when he turned heel and had his memorable run with Bret Hart, a lot of the emphasis was on him being a former world champion ten years prior, a relic from the past angry at the “new generation” of WWE talent.

How much have things changed since 1992? I present to you a chart showing every top male WWE star, and a few that you could argue are just slightly under top level status:

WrestlerAge
Roman Reigns41
CM Punk47
Brock Lesnar48
Seth Rollins40
Cody Rhodes40
Gunther38
LA Knight43
Damian Priest43
Randy Orton46
Drew McIntyre41
Jey Uso40

The average age here is 42.45. In other words, today’s WWE main event scene features a whole bunch of Bob Backlunds.

I can’t remember a time where every big star just feels so…old. Not in terms of in-ring, as everyone listed above is good to great. No one embarrasses themselves, and the top matches are usually good. But on the flipside, I’ve seen Brock Lesnar do the same thing for 14 years. I’ve seen Randy Orton on top. I’ve seen Seth Rollins, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns headline big events for well over a decade now. Key point here? I’ve seen it.

The way WWE structures itself right now makes it hard for anyone over 30 to truly break out and become top level stars. Many wrestlers get featured, some get to headline, but it seems like WWE is far more interested in creating a system where people have to “earn” their spots. They can “get the rub” by getting laid out by The Undertaker. They can be in the same ring as The Rock and get berated, but the chances of a young star getting what is most important — a decisive win over an established star — often feels remote at times.

To their credit, WWE has been pushing hard the likes of Trick Williams, Oba Femi, and Bron Breakker over the last few months. But even then, they aren’t at the very top. Femi defeated Lesnar at WrestleMania in a quick, convincing match, only to lose just as quickly one month later at Clash in Italy. Breakker got a decisive victory over Rollins at Backlash, but then lost to him this past Monday on Raw. Granted, both were protected on those losses, and one loss isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. But you know what protects them even more? Winning. All the time.

All of this is illustrated more as WWE begins to plant the seeds for SummerSlam. After Roman Reigns defeated Jacob Fatu for the second time at Clash in Italy, he locked eyes with Solo Sikoa, hinting a future feud between the two after spending much of 2024 at each other’s throats. Meanwhile it’s been rumored that Rollins could emerge as the winner of the King of the Ring tournament, setting him up for a match against Reigns. I don’t think I really care too much about revisiting their feud again. The Shield broke up twelve years ago. Can we move on?

One can argue that WWE is doing so well right now they don’t need to change anything. And WWE has such a giant advantage over every other wrestling promotion in the world, there’s no real rush to do anything. But eventually, the wrestlers listed above are going to age out, and the best time to start pushing in a new era of wrestlers is now, while the company is hot. Otherwise, by the time new stars are made, they’re already in their 30s, and soon the cycle will repeat itself. WWE needs to be more pragmatic about who can be a top star before it eventually comes back to haunt them.

LA Knight reveals Brock Lesnar’s WWE Royal Rumble elimination did not go as planned

LA Knight disclosed that Brock Lesnar’s WWE Royal Rumble elimination did not unfold as it was supposed to.

While not revealing the story in entirety, Knight told Chris Van Vliet on the latest episode of the Insight Podcast the elimination did not go as planned.

“I did (eliminate Brock Lesnar). And man, I’ll tell that story someday, but it feels too new and fresh to me. But I’ll just say things went differently than they were supposed to.”

During the WWE spectacle match in January, Cody Rhodes and Knight threw Lesnar over the top rope in a surprising move. However, footage from the match appeared to show Lesnar instructing Rhodes and Knight to attack him before sending him over the top rope. Roman Reigns eventually won the classic battle royal and challenged CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania.

Knight participated in a six-man tag team match at WrestleMania against The Vision. Barely a couple of years ago fans were rallying behind him to win the Money in the Bank briefcase which could contribute to his re-focused pursuit this year,

Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi result at WWE Clash in Italy 2026

Brock Lesnar defeated Oba Femi at WWE Clash in Italy 2026.

Lesnar picked up the victory after delivering his seventh F5 of the match, which went six minutes and 21 seconds. He had jumped Femi before the bell and gave his opponent four F5s in the early going.

After the bout, Lesnar was shown shouting at Femi that they were now 1-1 against each other.

For Lesnar, he is now 5-5 in his last 10 singles matches in the company, dating back to his SummerSlam 2022 bout against Roman Reigns.

For Femi, this is the 28-year-old’s first loss in a singles match since Ricky Saints defeated him for the NXT Championship at No Mercy on September 27, 2025.

Brock Lesnar’s future after WWE Clash in Italy

Last week, reports surfaced that despite his apparent retirement at WrestleMania 42, Lesnar is expected to continue with WWE past Clash in Italy. He is not expected for the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18.

Dave Meltzer addressed Lesnar’s future in the April 27, 2026 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, writing that most in WWE expect his retirement to take place at WWE SummerSlam in Minnesota this year.

WWE stars who need a win at Clash in Italy | Opinion

Sunday’s WWE Clash in Italy features several rematches against talent with some stars seeking to either gain momentum or shift momentum in their favor. With championship implications and ongoing storylines, the PLE presents a crucial opportunity for stars to re-establish themselves.

Here’s a few talents who need to win at WWE Clash in Italy.

Sol Ruca

Ruca won their non-title SNME bout via disqualification last weekend as an awkward landing after the Sol Snatcher forced the stoppage.

Ruca and Lynch had their first encounter on the May 4 edition of Raw. Ruca was in the middle of signing her contract, officially transitioning to the main roster. Lynch intervened to confront Adam Pearce for her impromptu match against IYO SKY the previous week.

Despite the mixed reactions, Lynch levels up and boosts her opponents. While it seems like the Women’s Intercontinental Title is struggling to brand its own identity, Ruca’s win could help define it with exciting matches and feuds.

Oba Femi

Femi already showed his physicality and worth against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42. Another win against him would help cement him as WWE’s next powerhouse attraction. He has developed the momentum, but a second win over someone of Lesnar’s stature would solidify his credibility as a main event force.

It would also avoid predictable squash matches which were taking place as a part of Femi’s open challenges after WrestleMania. Apart from a rivalry with Roman Reigns, which was teased in the Mania post show and Gunther’s interest in a possible feud, the pool of believable opponents is limited.

Femi needs to gain a victory over Lesnar again at Clash in Italy so he can strut on to better opportunities and most likely the World Heavyweight Championship.

Jade Cargill

The formulaic attraction of Cargill’s limited title defenses during her initial World title reign made it difficult to sustain her character development. It often came across as WWE protecting her to ensure her dominant position. However, it fell flat.

Rhea Ripley has strong connections to ongoing storylines. The tension with Charlotte Flair stemming from their history is teasing another singles feud down the line. Jacy Jayne confronting the champion on the April 24 edition of SmackDown demonstrated why WWE may be keen on keeping her in the center of the women’s division.

Without the championship, Cargill could focus on fresh feuds against top notch opponents before a likely future as a two-time WWE Women’s Champion.

Gunther

Gunther has already been presented as a physically dominant World Heavyweight Champion. If he defeats Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship Sunday, that would be the final step in establishing himself as the company’s ultimate in-ring force.

Rhodes is in his third reign as champion. Initially, he was backed by fans worldwide to end Roman Reigns’ record-breaking Universal Title reign and take over the reins of the new era in WWE. However, over time, his monotonous tone and persona has become predictable.

With a heel like Gunther taking the WWE Title from Rhodes, it would give him some time off from the constant spotlight and refresh his character direction. Meanwhile, it would be a change of pace with Gunther’s brutal, methodical style of wrestling in the WWE Championship picture.

Roman Reigns

The Tribal Combat match is built to feel like it’s Roman Reigns’ domain. Reigns’ presence is still central to WWE. While this reign may feel a lot like his last one, a loss this soon would risk undercutting the aura WWE has rebuilt for him since his return to full-time competition.

Jacob Fatu’s determination is set in the right place — to take everything Reigns has for himself. However, that might get the best of him and detour him from seeing the bigger picture, blinding him with the right motive and method to get the victory over Reigns. He has proven it multiple times that his anger and quest has been the main influence to determine his next move.

At the same time, it would enable WWE to carefully plot who could take over the leadership reins from him instead of a rushed takeover by Fatu.

Brock Lesnar meet & greet announced for Saskatchewan, Canada

Popular WWE superstar and legend Brock Lesnar is set to be in Saskatchewan, Canada, for an upcoming meet & greet.

Earlier, Emerald Park Home Hardware in Saskatchewan announced on Instagram about hosting a meet & greet with Brock Lesnar on May 28 from 4 to 6 PM.

We are thrilled to be hosting the internationally recognized sports icon, Brock Lesnar, this Thursday, May 28th from 4pm – 6pm! Stop by for a pic and autograph!” their Instagram page wrote.

Lesnar is set to be in Turin, Italy, on May 31, 2026, for his Clash in Italy PPV match against Oba Femi. The upcoming match is set to be a WWE WrestleMania 42 rematch, where Femi brutally dominated and defeated Lesnar, which seemingly led to his potential retirement.

While fans speculated about his retirement, Lesnar returned on Monday Night RAW last week and launched a brutal ambush on Femi. Earlier this week, he again appeared via a video package and explained his actions.

Gunther opens up regarding potential Brock Lesnar match

Gunther has shared his thoughts on facing Brock Lesnar in WWE.

Two of the most dominant men on the WWE roster, Gunther and Brock Lesnar, have never unfortunately squared off against each other in singles action. Despite sharing the ring in Royal Rumble matches, the two have yet to face each other.

Recently, during an interview on the Italian Wrestling Channel, Gunther was asked about a potential match with Lesnar in the future.

Despite not ruling out the chances, the former champion claimed that he is currently focused on Cody Rhodes and his upcoming title match in Italy.

“I wasn’t even there on that day at Mania, because it was the day after me, when a lot of it happened with Brock, so I only saw it in a headline, and that’s literally all the info I had. Obviously, he’s back now, but I haven’t thought about it. I’m really focused on what I’m doing with Cody now. I will be challenging for the WWE Undisputed Championship in Italy, and that’s my full focus right now,” he said.

After I beat Cody [Rhodes] then Brock [Lesnar] can challenge me, and we’ll do that.

While Gunther defeated Seth Rollins at WWE WrestleMania 42, Lesnar lost to Oba Femi on Night Two of WrestleMania 42 and seemingly retired after the bout. However, in reality, he had other intentions.

Has Brock Lesnar retired from WWE?

While many believed Lesnar had retired after WWE WrestleMania 42, he recently returned on an episode of Monday Night RAW and took down Oba Femi.

The two are now set to fight at Clash in Italy, as confirmed by a graphic during the latest edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Brock Lesnar Retired And I Was OK With That | Opinion

One of the more memorable moments for me during this past Wrestlemania was the surprising and genuinely emotional retirement of one Brock “by God” Lesnar. After losing his match to Oba Femi, a tearful Lesnar removed his boots and left them in the ring, the universal signal that a wrestler is retiring,

Now, I know a few things; Comic Book characters never stay dead, The Rolling Stones will never stop touring and wrestlers have a really hard time staying retired. However, in this case WWE went as far as to move Lesnar to the “Alumni” section of their website and it seemed like we maybe, possibly, had really seen the last of The Beast Incarnate.

Fast forward to this past week’s RAW and not only is Lesnar back, but he’s already got a contract for a rematch against Femi (that he seems to have written himself?) in Europe. Not only that, but it will assuredly lead to a SummerSlam “rubber” match between the two, where we might actually see Lesnar retire as the event is on his home turf Minnesota.

It’s Not That I’m Mad, Just Disappointed

To say that Lesnar’s return comes with mixed feelings is to say that when he returned last summer it was to mixed feelings. Is Brock a great attraction and one of the most dominant presences in WWE? Yes. Was he wrapped up in a bunch of unseemly things involving the former chairman of the board? Yes, yes he was. I would have been OK if Brock simply went away and farmed trees or did whatever he does on that compound of his in Saskatchewan.

So, when Brock returned to face John Cena on his retirement tour, it was distasteful, but made sense. Lesnar was one of the biggest obstacles that Cena never really overcame and one more match between the two seemed like a good idea and then maybe the end for both of them.

However, when Brock then squashed Cena at the ridiculously named Wrestlepalooza, my heart sank. “He’s going to be around for a while, isn’t he?”I said out loud to the no one else that was in the room at the time. “Yeah” I answered. “Yeah…”

So when Lesnar unlaced his boots at Wrestlemania, I literally breathed a sigh of relief. I wouldn’t have to have that reminder of one of the darkest chapters in WWE (and that’s saying something) crushing people with the three things he does.

Now, as a fan, I’m faced with it all over again. Here’s a guy who is by and large very entertaining, but also not someone I particularly want to see on TV. The conflicted feelings run deep, and what makes it worse is that what seemed like a legitimate and emotional moment at Wrestlemania was taken away. Considering how few of those moments we got this year, that just makes it sting a little bit more.

What’s Done Is Done And It Should Stay Done

Where does that leave me as a viewer? Do I want to see Femi beat Lesnar? Of course I do, and I did. I saw him handle the Beast like, well, like Lesnar would have handled someone 15 years ago and made my peace with that being it for Brock.

To put it flatly, I simply don’t care about a trilogy between Femi and Lesnar. From a story telling perspective, from a legacy perspective and from a building Femi up as the “next big thing” perspective, it just doesn’t make sense and screams of someone in WWE saying “we got a lot of heat out of these two, lets see how hard we can squeeze the stone.” I would much rather see Femi built up by tearing through current stars, which the man has proven he can do,

If we are going to ignore everything about Brock Lesnar and play along with this one final cash grab off his slowly turning purple back, then fine. Let’s get it over with. But it just goes to show that the TKO era of WWE isn’t about anything right now other than milking things with name recognition at the cost of realizing the future.

Brock Lesnar returns, attacks Oba Femi on WWE Raw

Brock Lesnar is back, and it looks like he’ll be wrestling in Italy.

On Monday, Oba Femi headed to the ring for his open challenge when suddenly someone entered the ring and attacked him. When the lights came on, it was none other than Brock Lesnar, who destroyed Femi with four F5s. After he was done, Lesnar looked at Femi and smirked before leaving the ring. Femi recovered enough to stare down Lesnar as he headed up the rampway.

Following the commercial break, Adam Pearce found Paul Heyman in his office and asked him what was going on, as he had filed retirement papers on Lesnar’s behalf. Heyman gave Pearce a contract, saying it was for a match between Lesnar and Femi for Clash in Italy and it already had Lesnar’s signature on it. Heyman told Pearce that if Femi signed it, it would set up the biggest rematch in history.

Brock Lesnar & WWE heavily suggested he had retired

At WrestleMania 42 last month, Lesnar lost to Oba Femi in quick fashion, falling to Femi’s powerbomb. After the match, an emotional Lesnar took off his gloves and boots and placed them in the ring, hinting that it was the end of his in-ring career. In the weeks following his apparent retirement, WWE had placed Lesnar in the alumni section of their website.

Despite this, PWInsider had recently reported he was still listed as an active performer internally within the company.

John Cena compares ‘OVW Four’ to newer young talent in WWE

John Cena has opened up and compared the OVW Four to the younger talents in WWE.

In a recent interview with CBS Sports and SHAK Wrestling, Cena opened up on the concept of having new, younger champions in WWE. Bringing up the comparison with the iconic OVW Four, Cena shared how the new talents are going to get the spot after the veterans fade out.

The iconic OVW Four consisted of Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and Brock Lesnar. “I don’t think one reason points in that direction. It could be someone like me who had an unprecedented stay of 23 years – keep in mind, that’s not the usual career length of a WWE Champion and Superstar. And alongside me, Randy Orton, side by side. Batista, a little bit of a shorter run, and Brock Lesnar in and out. But that class that you spoke of so highly, we had an anomaly of longevity and success, and that takes up time and spots,” he said.

So now you’re talking about, as we wane out, certainly my chapter’s done, Batista’s chapter’s done, Brock – Randy’s kinda the only one left. Now, new performers are gonna get those spots, and those are going to go to the most seasoned performers that connect with the audience, and they just happen to be a little bit of the older scale. That doesn’t mean I don’t think we’re ruling out the possibility of a young champion in the very near future, because we are loaded with youth, speed, and talent,” Cena added.

Further speaking on the same topic, Cena also addressed his fandom for NXT’s latest addition, Mason Rook. “It’s no secret, I think, to those in the know that I chant with everybody else, ‘He’s big. He’s bad. He’ll bodyslam your dad.’ So if you don’t know who I’m talking about, I want you to go check that out. I’m a fan. – Cena is a fan of Mason Rook.

Rook recently made his debut in WWE NXT following a career in the British independent scene and has already become a talking point on the roster.

Update on Brock Lesnar’s status after move to WWE alumni section

An update is available regarding Brock Lesnar’s status with WWE.

Following his loss to Oba Femi at WWE WrestleMania 42, Lesnar seemingly retired, leaving his gloves and boots in the ring. Lesnar was recently moved to the alumni section on WWE.com, which led to speculation regarding his status with the company and whether he is actually retired.

PWInsider put out a report on Monday stating that Lesnar is still listed as an active performer internally in the company. The report also stated that Lesnar is considered a “free agent” because he is not assigned to a brand.

However, it was not addressed why Lesnar is not listed on the “free agent” page of WWE’s website along with Omos, AJ Lee, Paige, and others, instead of the alumni page, which lists wrestlers no longer with the company.

Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam in Minnesota

Dave Meltzer addressed what is being said internally in WWE about Lesnar’s status with the company in the April 27, 2026 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer wrote that he’s been told to treat Lesnar’s retirement as an angle:

“Most in the company believed that was not his retirement and nobody would confirm that it was a true retirement. We were outright told to treat it as an angle including from the same person who warned us to treat the first Seth Rollins injury as an angle. Lesnar’s stuff by design is almost always kept secretive, Lesnar was very convincing and the situation came across so big that it would almost be a letdown for him to retire again. Most had expected his retirement at SummerSlam, since it is in Minneapolis this year.”
