Carmella teases return after AEW star uses ‘her’ finisher

Former WWE Superstar Carmella has teased a return to the ring. The former WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion reacted to B3CCA using what appeared to be a version of her Code Of Silence submission on AEW Collision this week against Kris Statlander.

‘Mella claimed that there is a “a difference between homage and theft,” and that she “didn’t retire.” Carmella would then tease that she might have to “come back” to show current stars how it is really done.

Carmella has been out of action since 2023, with her last match taking place at Madison Square Garden in a Road to WrestleMania house show where she teamed with Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai & IYO SKY) and Piper Niven.

Could Carmella go to AEW?

Despite ‘Mella reacting to an AEW clip, there’s currently no indication that she will be making her in-ring return, if it does happen, with All Elite Wrestling. There’s no word on whether she’s expected for a WWE return anytime soon either.

When did Carmella last wrestle?

Carmella’s last match was a Road to WrestleMania house show at Madison Square Garden in March 2023, where she teamed with Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY) and Piper Niven.

Is Carmella still signed to WWE?

Her contract status hasn’t been publicly confirmed either way. She remains officially listed on WWE’s roster page, but she hasn’t appeared on television in over two years.

Who is B3CCA?

B3CCA is an independent wrestler that has been appearing on Collision recently. The submission she used on Kris Statlander this week is what prompted Carmella’s “homage and theft” response on social media.

Corey Graves & Carmella welcome birth of new child

Corey Graves (Matthew Polinsky) & Carmella (Leah Van Dale) shared some great news on Friday, revealing that they’ve welcomed a new child into the world.

“Bram Julian Polinsky you’ve changed my life forever, baby boy,” the former WWE women’s division star wrote while sharing a photo of her, Graves, and the new baby.

This is Graves & Carmella’s second child together, with Carmella also being a stepmother to Graves’ three kids from a previous marriage. She and Graves have been married since 2022. Their first child — also a boy whose name is Dimitri — was born in November 2023.

Since giving birth the first time, Carmella has dealt with a post-pregnancy complication called drop foot. She’s able to live a normal day-to-day life but does experience issues with things like running.

Carmella departed WWE earlier this year when the company decided not to renew her contract. She is hopeful that she’ll be able to wrestle for the promotion again one day.

Last month, WWE ran an angle where Graves was attacked by Brock Lesnar, which served as a way to explain him being gone from his commentary role for a little while for the birth of his child.

Carmella & Corey Graves expecting second child

Leah Van Dale (former WWE wrestler Carmella) and Corey Graves are celebrating some big personal news.

The couple announced today that Van Dale is pregnant with their second child together and is expected to give birth this fall. Their son Dimitri was born in November 2023, and Van Dale is also a stepmother to Graves’ three kids from a previous marriage.

“All in perfect time,” They wrote on Instagram. “Our new chapter begins this fall.”

Graves (Matthew Polinsky) is a commentator for WWE currently working on the NXT broadcast team with Vic Joseph & Booker T. Van Dale spent more than a decade with the company before departing WWE earlier this year when her contract was not renewed.

It’s been more than two years now since Van Dale last wrestled. Since giving birth to Dimitri, she’s been dealing with drop foot, a post-pregnancy complication that makes it difficult for her to lift her foot. Van Dale is able to live a mostly normal life but has issues with things like running. While it’s taking longer than she or her doctors expected, Van Dale has expressed optimism that she’ll be able to wrestle again someday.

Carmella on potential in-ring return: ‘I would hope it would be for WWE’

If Carmella is able to wrestle again, she hopes that it will be in a WWE ring.

Carmella (Leah Van Dale) departed WWE earlier this year when her contract with the company was not renewed. She has been out of action since March 2023. After giving birth to her son Dimitri in November of that year, she’s been dealing with drop foot, a post-pregnancy complication that makes it difficult for Carmella to lift her foot.

Day-to-day life is mostly normal for Carmella, but there are still some challenges that she has to battle.

“My day-to-day life is very normal,” she told the New York Post. “It’s just the thought of — even if I try to run, my foot sometimes gets caught on, like, whether it’s the pavement or dirt because it’s difficult to lift. Like, if I’m lifting my feet, I can lift this one up and then this one doesn’t go quite as high. So it’s just, you can’t control it as much.”

Carmella said the issue isn’t just making sure that she’s healthy, she needs to be able to protect her opponent and make sure they don’t get hurt. She wouldn’t be able to live with herself if something were to happen to an opponent during a match. But Carmella is confident that an in-ring return will be possible someday, even if things are taking longer than she or her doctors anticipated.

The New York Post asked Carmella if she would be open to wrestling for other companies given the way her WWE run ended.

“So I’m not like a ‘never say never’ person. To me, I do feel such loyalty to WWE. I loved my time working there. If I ever went back, I would hope it would be for WWE,” she responded. “I would want to go back as Carmella and moonwalk my way out there and be in a WWE ring. I do feel like that would be my home, but I’m not going to say never, right? Like, who knows what the future holds. I don’t want to become a hypocrite [laughs].”

Carmella said she was blindsided by her WWE departure and wasn’t given an explanation for it. That left a little bit of a sour taste in her mouth, but she respects WWE’s decision and has nothing but great things to say about the time she spent with the company. She wanted to return and was coming up with ideas for a non-wrestling role, including pitching the idea of her working with Pretty Deadly.

Before her departure, Carmella had been with WWE since joining developmental in 2013. She met her husband — WWE commentator Corey Graves — while with the promotion.

Carmella wanted to work in WWE while pregnant, questions lack of opportunity

As she promised, Carmella had a lot to say about her exit from WWE following the expiration of her contract.

The now-former WWE wrestler appeared on Kail Lowry’s podcast where she discussed what happened when she learned about her WWE contract not being renewed and that her contract was paused for less than two months while pregnant.

Now going by Leah Van Dale, she said everything was going to plan when she and husband, Corey Graves, had their first baby and WWE were supportive of them doing so. She then detailed the drop foot she suffered and continues to recover from.

She said she offered to work and do backstage interviews, be a manager or contribute in other roles during her downtime as she wanted to stay active, but WWE said it was fine for her to stay home.

She said that while pregnant, she spoke to someone she described as “the head of everything” with a pitch to return and after getting positive feedback, she was routed to creative and spoke to them., getting medical clearance to travel but not compete in the ring. However, she said it was eventually “radio silence” after that conversation and she “was completely ghosted.”

She wanted to get the same opportunity Graves got to find another path after having to retire due to concussions or that Big E received in recovering from a broken neck.

“Why wasn’t I afforded that same opportunity? That’s what I keep asking myself. I have a lot to offer. I have a fanbase. I represent the company well. Why wasn’t I given an opportunity somewhere else?,” she said, opining that perhaps it’s because she’s a woman.

**********

She said got the call from WWE that her contract was expiring in twelve days. It was at that point when she learned her contract was paused for just seven weeks while she was pregnant and then reinstated postpartum which she had no idea about. She didn’t go back to work at that point, nor was she asked, as she had no idea her contract was restarted. She said WWE was aware of her drop foot and had a year left on her deal when she got pregnant.

“I was completely blindsided,” she said. “It hurt. I was really upset and disappointed.”

She said the day she got the call about the non-renewal, she had visited a spine specialist and was continuing to try to get better but then questioned why she was going through all the work if they weren’t going to bring her back.

Van Dale said she has always been a “company girl” and that this situation is a “sh*tty way to end a 12-year career with the company.” She said she never got answers as to why this happened and was relayed to legal. She felt it was important to do the interview and speak up about the situation, regardless of any repercussions.

While she said she is happy that Graves is still employed, she questioned why it’s fair she doesn’t have a job just because she got pregnant. She isn’t sure if she will attend WWE shows in the future but “never say never.”

Van Dale said she’s going to pivot and is excited for what’s next which includes an online platform for women who have suffered miscarriages. She didn’t mention whether she wanted to continue her wrestling career, but that being on Broadway is her dream job.

Her advice to other women within WWE who want to have children and also have a career is they “just gotta be careful” and that there needs to be more communication and something in place for moms in the workplace that allows them to do both.

“I would like more support backstage for these moms,” saying that should also apply to those mothers that even visiting.

Carmella on WWE departure: ‘I feel like I’m being punished because I had a baby’

Carmella didn’t like the way her tenure with WWE ended.

The now former WWE star on Instagram released a preview of her appearance on the Barely Famous podcast that will premiere in full this Friday. In the clip, Carmella said she feels like she is being punished for having a child during her two-year absence, saying the choice to leave the company wasn’t hers.

“It just feels like a sh***y way to end a twelve year career with the company,” she said. “Like, this is how it ended.”

“I got a call saying that my contract was up in ten days…ghosted. Ghosted, completely ghosted. What if this is the end of my career? Like, what am I doing with my life? What do I have to offer? Why wasn’t I given an opportunity somewhere else…I feel like I’m being punished because I had a baby.”

When the host suggested WWE could change their minds, Carmella didn’t seem interested.

“Why would you want to be somewhere that doesn’t want you?,” she added. “I wish more for women in general and moms and especially athletes. I feel like you shouldn’t have to choose one. Why can’t you have both?”

Carmella last wrestled in March of 2023 and gave birth to a son that fall. She has been suffering from drop foot, a complication from her pregnancy.

Carmella says she’ll be on a podcast ‘later this week’ to discuss WWE departure

Carmella is speaking out for the first time following her WWE departure.

Speaking to fans on Instagram, the 37-year-old said that there had been some news in the last week, but had not responded to it due to being sick. She thanked fans for their support following news that her WWE contract had recently expired.

“I’ve seen all of your texts and tweets and messages and DMs and like, oh my god. You guys are just the best and I’m so grateful for you and everything that you’ve been saying about Carmella and my career and I’m so blessed, so thank you,” she said.

Carmella then announced she would be on a podcast later this week to provide more information.

“I know there’s a lot of questions and uncertainty around everything. I will be going on a podcast later this week answering some of those questions and telling my side because I have a lot to say about the situation, so I’ll give you the details later when I can and I can’t wait to fill you guys in,” she said.

The former SmackDown Women’s Champion has been out of action since March of 2023, giving birth to a son in November of that year. As recently as December, she had expressed interest in a return to the ring but was suffering from drop foot, a complication from her pregnancy.

Report: Carmella’s WWE contract recently expired

Carmella is no longer under WWE contract as her contract expired recently, according to a dual report from Fightful and PW Nexus.

The 37-year-old has been out of action since March 2023 as she and husband Corey Graves welcomed the birth of a son in November 2024. She also has been suffering through drop foot, a condition that can result from childbirth and involves herniated discs in the back pressing on nerves connected to the feet.

However, in the same interview with Nikki & Brie Garcia where she revealed her condition, she said she wanted to make an in-ring comeback and that she misses performing. As recently as December, she reiterated that desire and that she was waiting on her nerves to heal.

Since August 2022, she has wrestled just six times. She and Graves went public in October 2022 with news of a miscarriage that accounted for some of the time away.

As Graves remains with WWE as a broadcaster, it’s unknown if Carmella would explore other opportunities outside WWE when she is cleared to return or if WWE would want to re-sign her.

Born Leah Van Dale, she has been in the WWE system since 2013, originally paired with Enzo Amore and Big Bill, currently in AEW. She has once held both the SmackDown Women’s title and the Women’s Tag Team titles (with Zelina Vega).

Carmella hopeful for WWE return: ‘I miss performing’

Carmella still plans on returning to the ring someday, but for now, she’s happy being a mom at home.

It’s been 22 months since she performed inside a wrestling ring. In November 2023, Carmella gave birth to her first child with husband, Corey Graves. She was in labor for more than 60 hours and developed “drop foot,” a condition that can result from childbirth characterized by herniated discs in the back pressing on nerves in the foot.

Carmella recently spoke with Bayley on Instagram Live and gave an update on her condition. She’s still dealing with drop foot but hopes to return to the ring once her nerves heal.

“Being a mom is the best thing I’ve ever done, like better than WWE. No offense, WWE,” she said.

“I love being a mom, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done ever in my whole entire life but that being said, of course, I miss WWE. Of course, I miss everyone. I miss being Carmella. I miss performing. I miss it so much. I wish I had an update for you guys. For those who don’t know, I have some nerve damage in my foot from delivering Dimitri. I have what’s called drop foot, and it’s like this nerve behind your knee. I’ve been dealing with all of that.”

“It sucks, but I wrestled for 10, 11, 12 years and I never had an injury, knock on wood, that was like this. Now, I’m just doing physical therapy, going to see the chiropractor, getting MRIs, and doing all of this stuff I never thought I would be doing. Here we are, and hopefully, eventually, nerves do take a lot of time to heal, but eventually, we’ll get back to it for sure.”

Carmella first tried out for WWE in 2010 but ended up moving to Los Angeles and working as a Laker Girl and a New England Patriots cheerleader before signing with WWE in 2013. In addition to wrestling with the company, she also had roles on Total Divas and Total Bellas. She says the last two years have allowed her to slow down.

“Honestly, it forced me to slow down. I never really had a break from WWE other than maybe two or three months when we were first in the pandemic, I wasn’t on TV but other than that, I never really had a break. It was just go, go, go for 10 straight years so I feel like this made me slow down and just appreciate the little things in life.”

    • As a talent in the current main roster as we might say, NXT can be kind of intimidating, because it’s not really a developmental anymore. It’s almost a grooming ground for these monsters who are going to come up and eventually stand across the ring from you – and they’ve been trained by Shawn Michaels. We’re definitely preparing the next generation of superstars and wrestlers. And their run on The CW with NXT, I’ve been blown away. Really special stuff.

    • thirty-seven years old.. this past year, i struggled to even look at myself in the mirror, not recognizing the woman staring back. sleepless nights, hormones all over the place, keeping a tiny human alive and thriving.. so much has changed. there have been good days, bad days, and so many blurry days in between. a once confident woman, now completely lost. who am i? why don’t i recognize myself? will i ever get back to who i was? the truth is, no. i won’t. because i’m a different person now. i’m a mother. we don’t talk enough about the struggles new moms face, because we have no choice but to show up and keep going. i’ve put myself last, putting everyone else’s needs first, but i’m realizing that’s no good for anyone. lately, i’ve been making it a priority to take care of myself so i can show up as the best mom, wife, and woman i can be. for the first time in over a year, i’m starting to emerge from the fog and step into this new version of me. i’m proud of who i am and the sacrifices i’ve made for my family. i’m not the person i was before i had my son, but i’m an even better version of myself—and i’m learning to love her. to all the moms out there in the postpartum fog, take a moment to recognize how far you’ve come. you’re a superwoman. give yourself grace during this time of transformation, and trust that you’ll find yourself again.

  • In an interview with Foundation Radio, Mark Briscoe said he’s hoping to be an entrant in the 2024 Continental Classic. Briscoe noted that the tournament will begin next month:
    • Season is coming up. Thanksgiving Eve, that’s the start of the Continental Classic. And, you know, with [Kazuchika] Okada being the current Continental Champion, he’s the focal point. He’s the target, you know what I mean? But I feel like the Continental Classic last year, in a way, in my singles career – it was almost like a coming out party. I got the chance to wrestle four guys in my block. And it was just like, I don’t think anybody knew what I could do in singles competition. And I didn’t really make out too well in the wins and the losses, but I learned.
  • Adam Cole spoke to TV Insider about the passing of former ROH Chief Operating Officer Joe Koff:
    • I’m thankful I got to attend Joe Koff’s service, which just happened. Joe Koff was incredibly important to me. He was an unbelievable man, an unbelievable businessman. He was one of the first people to really support me and have my back and he gave me quite a bit of confidence when it came to wrestling. Having a belief in myself. Joe was so unbelievable to so many of us at Ring of Honor. He helped so many talents and so many different people. This was either from the business mindset or just bringing encouragement. He was awesome to the talent. Joe Koff was someone who, even when I didn’t work for Ring of Honor for years, would still text me congratulations. Whether it was my debut in NXT or debut in AEW or being part of the first [AEW] All In with MJF. Joe Koff went out of his way to reach out and say how proud he was of me. That meant the world. I think the world of him and grateful I could have been even a small part of that man’s life.
  • Cole was asked about Dynamite & NXT going head-to-head on November 6 (with NXT being moved to Wednesday that week due to election coverage):
    • I think it’s very exciting. I feel any time there is any kind of competition within pro wrestling, it has been nothing but a positive. When there is only one show in town, it can only do so much. I think when there are situations where people can challenge each other or go up against each other, it brings out the best in both places. It’s nothing but a good thing. It’s good for the wrestlers and fans alike.

Carmella dealing with drop foot, motivated for WWE return

Carmella opened up about her desire to return to the ring in a new interview.

During a recent appearance on the Nikki & Brie Show, Carmella revealed that she’s dealing with drop foot, a condition that can result from childbirth and involves herniated discs in the back pressing on nerves connected to the feet. However, the 36-year-old said she is motivated to prove to herself that she can still get back in the ring.

“I miss the fans, I miss performing, I miss that. I fell in love with that, did it for 11 years,” she said. “But more than anything I just want to prove, I think to myself, okay, I can go through this insane experience of labor and delivery and pregnancy and my body is completely different now from the inside out. (I) would love to go back and just prove that I can. To no one else, just to myself.”

Carmella gave birth to her first child with Corey Graves six months ago, a boy named Dimitri. Graves also has three kids from a prior relationship.

“Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with – again, things no one talks about – but I have what’s called drop foot, which is basically I have this injury from labor and delivery and pushing the baby out,” Carmella continued. “I have got herniated discs in my back which push on this nerve that’s connected to my right foot so the top of my foot, it’s hard to lift. So, I’m literally like limping around everywhere. It’s gotten better but…”

“I mean, I wrestled for 11 years and other than some concussions, knock on wood, never had any injuries and now I have this major injury from delivering my son,” she added.

Carmella hasn’t wrestled since March 2023. She’s been with WWE since 2013. Prior to that, she worked as a cheerleader for the LA Lakers and New England Patriots.

WWE’s Carmella & Corey Graves welcome birth of baby boy

Carmella (Leah Van Dale) and Corey Graves (Matthew Polinsky) have welcomed their baby boy into the world.

Carmella and Graves revealed in an Instagram post that their son Dimitri Paul Polinsky was born on Wednesday. Carmella went through 60 hours of labor before giving birth.

“Dimitri Paul Polinsky 11.8.23 8lbs 21 inches,” the couple wrote. “Well worth the 60 hour labor (more on that another day)”

Throughout her pregnancy journey, Carmella has bravely shared her experiences. Carmella revealed in October 2022 that she had gone through two pregnancy losses. She suffered an early miscarriage in September 2022 and then suffered an ectopic pregnancy shortly after. Carmella decided to share the story of her losses — and the “deep depression” she experienced after — because she wanted to help women who have suffered the same thing. Carmella wanted them to understand that they’re not to blame and there isn’t anything wrong with them.

Carmella and Graves announced that they were expecting a baby boy this May.

Carmella’s most recent WWE match took place in March of this year. Graves is currently part of the SmackDown commentary team alongside Michael Cole and Kevin Patrick.

This is Carmella and Graves’ first child together. The couple got married in April 2022. Carmella is also a stepmother to Graves’ three children from a previous marriage.

Women’s title match announced for next week’s WWE SmackDown

The WWE Women’s Championship will be on the line on the July 14 SmackDown episode.

As announced during this week’s show, Asuka will defend the WWE Women’s title against Bianca Belair on next week’s SmackDown. The match stems from an angle this week where Belair attacked Asuka in the ring in a wild brawl segment that also featured Charlotte Flair, Bayley, and women’s Money in the Bank contract holder IYO SKY.

After Belair attacked Asuka, Bayley and SKY continued the attack, but were interrupted by Flair. Belair attacked Bayley, leaving Flair, SKY, and Asuka in the ring. Flair then laid out SKY with a big boot, allowing the Women’s Champion to escape before SKY had the opportunity to cash in her contract.

Belair defeated Asuka at WrestleMania in a match for what was then known as the Raw Women’s Championship. Belair was drafted to SmackDown in the WWE Draft, then Asuka defeated Belair in a rematch at Night of Champions. The Raw Women’s Championship was then rebranded as the WWE Women’s Championship after becoming exclusive to SmackDown.

WWE’s Carmella & Corey Graves reveal sex of their baby

Carmella and Corey Graves are having a boy.

The couple revealed the news during an appearance on The Tamron Hall Show on Wednesday.

Before the sex of their child was announced, Carmella said:

We both wanted a boy. I feel so lucky either way because I have a stepson, two stepdaughters so either way. I can do the girly things with them, the boy things with him. But we both wanted a boy.

Graves then revealed his true motivations for wanting a boy. He said:

I was kind of hoping for a boy because I’m outnumbered badly.

Blue confetti then rained down from the ceiling to announce that they are, in fact, expecting a baby boy.

Carmella has spoken previously about dealing with depression following an ectopic pregnancy last year. The 35-year-old said she’s trying to speak publicly about the two miscarriages she’s suffered in order to help others going through the same thing. She opened up further about this to Hall on Wednesday.

Carmella continued:

It was really important for me to share my story. When I had the first miscarriage, we dealt with it privately. I think, only we knew, my parents knew, and my sister and that was it.

I just felt like that’s what you do. People don’t talk about miscarriage, people don’t talk about the loss of their child. I didn’t know anyone that had a miscarriage so when it happened again, I thought, well, it was the most isolating expereince. I felt so alone. It was devastating especially with it being an ectopic, .I barely knew what an ectopic pregnancy was and when it happened again, I just felt like how do I take this and spin it into somewhat of a positive note? If that’s even possible.

The couple announced on May 1 that they are expecting their first child. Since then Alexa Bliss & Ryan Cabrera as well as Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo have announced they are expecting as well.
