Tag Team title match to kick off WWE NXT Great American Bash main card

WWE has announced which match will be kicking off the NXT Great American Bash main card.

The NXT Tag Team titles will be up for grabs in the opening match of Sunday’s main card. Gallus’ Mark Coffey & Wolfgang are defending their titles against Tony D’Angelo & Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo.

Stacks earned the Tag Team title shot when he defeated Joe Coffey on the July 11 edition of NXT. With his victory, Stacks also freed D’Angelo from jail.

In storyline, D’Angelo was in jail after being set up by Gallus. Stacks tricked Gallus into believing that he would betray D’Angelo, but Stacks revealed that he wasn’t a snitch and defeated Joe Coffey to earn D’Angelo’s freedom.

A homecoming celebration took place on NXT after D’Angelo was freed. It ended with Mark Coffey being put through a table.

On NXT earlier this week, D’Angelo & Stacks defeated Bronco Nima & Lucien Price.

The Great American Bash main card streams live on Peacock/WWE Network starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday. The pre-show for the event begins at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Here’s everything that’s been announced for the show:

NXT Great American Bash (Sunday, July 30) —

  • NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes defends against Ilja Dragunov
  • Submission match: NXT Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton defends against Thea Hail
  • NXT North American Champion Dominik Mysterio defends against Mustafa Ali and Wes Lee in a triple threat match
  • Weapons Wild match: Roxanne Perez vs. Blair Davenport
  • Gable Steveson vs. Baron Corbin
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Gallus (Mark Coffey & Wolfgang) defend against Tony D’Angelo & Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo

Two title matches added to WWE NXT Great American Bash

Two new title matches have been added to The Great American Bash.

Gallus will defend their tag team titles in Cedar Park, Texas on July 30 against Tony D’Angelo and Stacks after Stacks won Tony D’Angelo’s freedom on last week’s NXT. On this week’s show, the two revealed that they had been working together to trick Gallus into giving then a tag team title match.

The Women’s title will also be on the line, with Tiffany Stratton again defending the NXT Women’s Championship against Thea Hail. Hail demanded a rematch against Stratton on Tuesday’s show, with Stratton coming out to the ring and eventually accepting. She refused, however, when Hail asked for a submission match. Hail then put Stratton in a kimura until Stratton agreed to the stipulation.

Blair Davenport and Roxanne Perez will square off again at the Great American Bash. The two had a split screen interview on this week’s NXT. Davenport accused Perez of having no killer instinct and told her that she didn’t belong in NXT anymore. The interview ended with Perez getting up and walking away.

Here is the updated lineup for the Great American Bash:

  • NXT Championship: Carmelo Hayes defends against Ilja Dragunov
  • NXT North American Championship: Dominik Mysterio defends against Mustafa Ali
  • NXT Tag Team titles: Gallus defends against Tony D’Angelo and Stacks
  • NXT Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton defends against Thea Hail
  • Roxanne Perez vs. Blair Davenport

Carmelo Hayes vs. Ilja Dragunov set for WWE NXT Great American Bash

Ilja Dragunov is headed to the Great American Bash.

Dragunov defeated Bron Breakker on Tuesday’s show to become the new number one contender to Carmelo Hayes’ NXT Championship. Dragunov won after connecting with a sliding headbutt to the back of Breakkers’ head. Dragunov and Hayes will meet at the Great American Bash on July 30 in Cedar Park, Texas.

Later in the show, Dragunov prevented Damian Priest from using the Money in the Bank briefcase to attack Hayes. However it backfired, as Finn Balor was able to pin Hayes in a tag match that also had Trick Williams.

Another match set for the Great American Bash is Mustafa Ali vs. Wes Lee for the North American title. Wes Lee will defend the title next week against Dominik Mysterio, who challenged him on Tuesday’s show.

Here is the lineup so far for The Great American Bash:

  • NXT Championship: Carmelo Hayes defends against Ilja Dragunov
  • NXT North American Championship: Wes Lee defends against Mustafa Ali

WWE announces NXT Great American Bash streaming special for July

The Great American Bash is returning to NXT for 2023.

During NXT Battleground on Sunday night, WWE revealed the date and location for NXT’s next streaming special. NXT Great American Bash 2023 will take place from Cedar Park, Texas on Sunday, July 30. The show will air live on Peacock/WWE Network.

While this will be the fourth straight year an NXT Great American Bash event has taken place, it’s the first time the show has been a streaming special. All three previous editions of NXT Great American Bash were special episodes of NXT television.

Great American Bash is being held at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 11 a.m. Eastern time on Friday, June 9.

Earlier this month, Dave Meltzer reported that WWE was considering running NXT Great American Bash as a special TV episode on July 4. Meltzer noted that the potential TV special had been talked about but was not official.

A creation of Dusty Rhodes, the Great American Bash was one of the NWA/WCW’s signature events. It also was used as a WWE pay-per-view name in the mid 2000s.

Two WWE NXT specials expected to take place this summer

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided an update on NXT’s schedule for this summer.

Meltzer reported that the next NXT special events after Battleground are expected to take place on Tuesday, July 4 and Saturday, August 12. The July 4 event would be NXT Great American Bash, a special episode of NXT television. The August 12 show would be a streaming special on Peacock.

Meltzer added that neither show is official, but both have been talked about by WWE.

After 5/28, the next NXT major shows are expected to be a Great American Bash special on 7/4, which would be a Tuesday TV show, and an 8/12 Saturday night Peacock special. Neither is official as the NXT big show calendar according to those in WWE lists no big events after 5/28 as being official but both have been talked about. July 4th is generally the hardest day of the year with the possible exception of Christmas Eve to draw on television. So the choices are to do a normal show and throw in the towel or to do something special. Wrestling does have a history of special holiday shows doing well, but there is a difference between a live event and a television show on nights people want to go out.

PWInsider reported on the August 12 event earlier this week, noting that a location for the show hasn’t been locked in yet.

NXT Battleground is being held in Lowell, Massachusetts on Sunday, May 28 and will stream live on Peacock. The main event will see Carmelo Hayes defend the NXT Championship against Bron Breakker.
