WWE Main Event results: Ricochet vs. Young, Carrillo vs. Benjamin

The Big Takeaway: Ricochet returned to Main Event, defeating Eric Young in a very fine opening match. Humberto Carrillo then made his show debut with a win over Shelton Benjamin.

Both matches were strong and with the Raw and SmackDown quick recaps, the show was a perfectly fun way to spend 45 minutes.

**********

Ricochet defeated Eric Young (5:28)

This was really strong. Two talented, currently underused performers doing a really good job of warming up the pre-Raw crowd was a pleasure to watch.

Eric Young flipped around for Ricochet extremely well. He tried to work a 205 Live style to fit in with Ricochet and was generally up to the task, and even more impressive given that these two have only worked together once before on TV and that was over a year ago.

Ricochet teased the flip dive to the outside twice before finally hitting it on the third attempt. Ricochet went for his finisher twice, too, but was knocked off the top rope by Young each time.

Eventually, Ricochet was just too quick for Young, who ran out of steam and ability to thwart his plans. Ricochet hit the 630 for the win and the crowd was into it. This was good, solid babyface vs. heel fare.

Humberto Carrillo defeated Shelton Benjamin (5:17)

The impressive Humberto Carrillo made his Main Event debut here after what has been an excellent first run on the main roster. The 25-year-old’s work with Andrade has been outstanding at times and often a contender for the best match on the show. Their Elimination Chamber match is a case in point.

Benjamin has been a regular on Main Event over the last month and has looked somewhat rejuvenated. His matches have been very good and his new cross armbar submission hold has been inescapable until now.

Benjamin went for the move within the first 30 seconds of the match and they did it so well that it looked like total chance that Carrillo was close enough to the ropes to get his legs over them to break the hold. Carrillo worked 100 mph before eating a big boot to the outside; Benjamin stood smoldering and we went to a break.

It was actually pretty impressive what they managed to fit in to such a short match. Benjamin really helped to put Carrillo over. They did a cool spot outside where Carrillo flipped over him into a handstand on the apron and then fell back onto Benjamin and planted him in a DDT.

Carrillo tried to finish things off, but Benjamin rolled out of the way when he came off the top rope. Carrillo landed on his feet, but Benjamin wasted no time in locking in his new submission move. This time, Carrillo managed to stand up to reverse the hold into a cover. Benjamin released the hold and kicked out at two.

Carrillo then put Benjamin in position with a spin kick and came off the top rope with a moonsault for the win.

Final Thoughts —

Two good Main Events in two weeks. Yes, it’s a shame that performers of this quality end up working on a show like this that has such little reach these days, but if you don’t have much time to watch WWE content it’s worth seeking it out as a one-stop shop to catch up on the past week of storylines.

Humberto Carrillo to challenge for US title at WWE Elimination Chamber

After last night’s Raw, WWE confirmed that there will be a United States Championship match at Elimination Chamber.

Andrade will defend his US title against Humberto Carrillo at Sunday’s PPV. The match was set up by Carrillo & Rey Mysterio defeating Andrade & Angel Garza on Raw last night.

Carrillo pinned Andrade in that tag match. In a post-show interview that WWE uploaded, Carrillo was asked about getting the title shot at Elimination Chamber. Carrillo said teaming with a legend like Mysterio last night gave him the power to handle Sunday’s title match.

This will be Andrade’s first televised title defense since he returned from his 30-day wellness policy suspension. He returned to the ring as part of the Tuwaiq Trophy gauntlet match at Super ShowDown last Thursday.

The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is hosting Elimination Chamber. Here’s the updated card:

  • Elimination Chamber match: Shayna Baszler vs. Asuka vs. Natalya vs. Ruby Riott vs. Liv Morgan vs. Sarah Logan (winner challenges for Becky Lynch’s Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 36)

Three matches added to WWE Super ShowDown

Ahead of the show taking place tomorrow, WWE has added three more matches to the card for Super ShowDown.

NXT’s Mansoor has been pushed as a hometown hero at WWE’s events in Saudi Arabia, winning the 50-man battle royal at last year’s Super ShowDown and defeating Cesaro at Crown Jewel in October.

Garza defeated Carrillo in their match on this week’s Raw. They’ll face off again in a tag team match next Monday, with Garza teaming with Andrade against Carrillo & Rey Mysterio.

At October’s Crown Jewel event, Gallows & Anderson last eliminated The Viking Raiders to win the World Cup tag team turmoil match.

The Super ShowDown pre-show will begin on the WWE Network at 11 a.m. Eastern time tomorrow, with the main card starting an hour later. The show is taking place at Mohammed Abdu Arena on the Boulevard in Riyadh.

Two matches set for WWE Raw next week, Beth Phoenix to appear

WWE has already made a few announcements for next week’s episode of Raw.

AJ Styles vs. Aleister Black will take place on Raw next Monday, along with Rey Mysterio & Humberto Carrillo vs. Andrade & Angel Garza. This will be Andrade’s return to Raw after the conclusion of his 30-day suspension for a wellness policy violation. With the suspension up, he’ll be returning to the ring as part of the Tuwaiq Trophy gauntlet match at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia this Thursday.

Beth Phoenix is also set to appear on Raw next week. Her appearance will further the build to Randy Orton vs. Edge at WrestleMania 36, with Phoenix providing an update on Edge’s condition following the angle where he was attacked by Orton last month.

Black was attacked by The O.C. on Raw tonight and then challenged Styles for next week after defeating Erick Rowan.

After trading pinning attempts near the finish, Garza defeated Carrillo in their match on tonight’s Raw.

Next week’s Raw is taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It will be the first episode of the show after Super ShowDown.

Tag match, Seth Rollins sermon set for WWE Raw

A tag team match has been announced for this Monday’s Raw.

Rusev and Humberto Carrillo will team together to take on Bobby Lashley and Angel Garza. Rusev and Lashley have been feuding for the last several months, with Lashley pinning Rusev back on the January 20 edition of Raw in a mixed tag team match that also featured Lana and Liv Morgan.

Angel Garza made his debut on Raw two weeks ago, aligning himself with Andrade’s business partner Zelina Vega. Despite being cousins, Garza attacked Carrillo in his debut and later laid out Rey Mysterio with a DDT on exposed concrete outside of the ring.

It was also announced that a “sermon” from Seth Rollins will take place on Monday’s Raw. In recent months, Seth Rollins has been calling himself the Monday Night Messiah.

A no holds barred match is also set, with Randy Orton taking on Matt Hardy after Orton gave Hardy a con-chair-to last week. Hardy had confronted Orton about Orton’s attack on Edge from two weeks ago.

Monday’s Raw will take place at the Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Washington.

Angel Garza debuts on WWE Raw, takes on Rey Mysterio

Image: WWE

Two weeks after losing his NXT Cruiserweight title at Worlds Collide, Angel Garza debuted on WWE Raw Monday, flanked by Zelina Vega.

As a follow-up to last week’s Raw angle where Humberto Carrillo injured U.S. Champion Andrade, Carrillo was waiting in the ring for an opponent when Garza’s music hit, surprising him. Vega did a promo introducing Garza (Carrillo’s cousin) before Garza cut a promo on Carrillo about letting their family down. Carrillo grabbed the mic away, leading to Vega slapping him and Garza attacking, eventually hitting the Wing Clipper.

Garza kept up the attack, throwing Carrillo into the ringside steps and pulling away the mats to expose the concrete floor as a callback to the Carrillo-Andrade angle. Rey Mysterio then ran out from the back to prevent it which led to a match made during the commercial break. After a lengthy match, Garza hit a hammerlock DDT on the exposed concrete, resulting in a DQ loss.

The 27-year-old signed with WWE last April and has mainly been on NXT TV and 205 Live.

Last week, Andrade was suspended for 30 days for violating the WWE Wellness Policy, leaving Vega on the sidelines.

Andrade vs. Humberto Carrillo confirmed for WWE Royal Rumble

Humberto Carrillo’s challenge to Andrade has been accepted, as the two will face off at the Royal Rumble this Sunday.

WWE confirmed today that Andrade will defend the WWE United States title against Humberto Carrillo this Sunday. Following his return on Monday night, Humberto Carrillo issued a challenge to Andrade on social media, saying that if Andrade wanted to pick on someone, he should pick on him.

In storyline, Carrillo was gone for a month following a hammerlock DDT into exposed concrete by Andrade during a gauntlet match that was to determine the next challenger for the United States title. Andrade ended up defeating Rey Mysterio for the United States title later in December.

Mysterio and Andrade squared off in a ladder match this past Monday on Raw. Andrade was able to hold on to the title thanks to interference from his business manager Zelina Vega. Andrade then went to lay out Mysterio the same way he did with Carrillo last month, but Carrillo (who was dressed up as a fan under a mask) jumped over the guardrail and attacked Andrade, sending him packing.

The Royal Rumble will take place this Sunday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Humberto Carrillo challenges Andrade for WWE Royal Rumble

Despite having just made his return to Raw tonight, Humberto Carrillo has already issued a challenge to Andrade.

In a backstage interview posted on social media, Carrillo challenged Andrade to a match at this Sunday’s Royal Rumble for Andrade’s United States title. He told Andrde he was tired of seeing him disrespect a legend like Rey Mysterio, and if he wanted to pick on someone, he should pick on him.

Last month on Raw, Humberto Carrillo faced Andrade in the finals of a gauntlet match to determine the next contender for the WWE United States championship. The match ended abruptly when Carrillo was laid out by Andrade following a hammerlock DDT on exposed concrete.

Andrade retained the WWE United States title in a ladder match tonight, defeating Rey Mysterio after interference from Andrade’s manager Zelina Vega. Andrade was about to lay out Mysterio with the hammerlock DDT on the exposed concrete when Carrillo came in through the crowd and drove him off,.

The 2020 Royal Rumble will take place this Sunday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Andrade vs. Humberto Carrillo set for WWE TLC pre-show

Ahead of tonight’s pay-per-view, WWE has announced a pre-show match for TLC.

Andrade vs. Humberto Carrillo will take place on tonight’s pre-show. It’s a rematch from Monday’s Raw, where Carrillo defeated Andrade after interference from Zelina Vega backfired. WWE uploaded a post-Raw video where — despite them arguing and Andrade blaming her for his loss — Vega insisted that everything between her and Andrade is fine.

TLC is taking place at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota tonight. The pre-show begins at 6 p.m. Eastern time, with the main card starting an hour later.

Humberto Carrillo to challenge for US title on next week’s WWE Raw

One night after he faces Shinsuke Nakamura and Roderick Strong at Survivor Series, AJ Styles will defend his United States Championship on Raw.

WWE has announced that Humberto Carrillo will challenge for Styles’ United States title on Raw next Monday. The show is taking place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois and will be the last of WWE’s four straight nights at the venue.

Carrillo teamed with Randy Orton & Ricochet on last week’s Raw and pinned Styles in a six-man tag main event. Tonight, Carrillo defeated Karl Anderson in a singles match. The Street Profits came out to ringside during the match, evened the odds against The O.C., and helped Carrillo win.

Styles cut a promo before Carrillo vs. Anderson and said he would love to defend his title against Carrillo tonight, but Carrillo disrespected him last week.

Styles retained his US title against Carrillo at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia on October 31, with Carrillo getting the title shot after winning a 20-man battle royal on the pre-show.

Styles vs. Nakamura vs. Strong at Survivor Series is a non-title matchup between the US Champion, Intercontinental Champion, and NXT North American Champion.

Danny Burch to make WWE 205 Live debut, Garza vs. Carrillo set

Lorcan lost a Cruiserweight title number one contender’s match to Lio Rush on the WWE Network portion of last week’s NXT live premiere. Gulak is the current Cruiserweight Champion.

Nese turned heel and reunited with Gulak earlier this month.

Angel Garza will also appear on tonight’s 205 Live, with him set to face his cousin Humberto Carrillo. Garza posted a video where he challenged Carrillo to the match and said that Carrillo disappointed their family by not winning the Cruiserweight title at Clash of Champions.

Garza made his 205 Live debut last month as part of the Gulak vs. Lorcan 10-man Captain’s Challenge tag match.

Dorado added to Clash of Champions Cruiserweight title match

The Cruiserweight title match at Clash of Champions is now a triple threat.

Cruiserweight Champion Drew Gulak will defend his title against Humberto Carrillo and Lince Dorado in a triple threat match at the pay-per-view. Dorado got added to the match by defeating Carrillo in the main event of this Tuesday’s 205 Live.

The episode ended with an angle where Gulak and Tony Nese reunited and laid out both Dorado and Carrillo.

Dorado and Carrillo have been feuding for several weeks. Their match on the August 6 episode of 205 Live ended in a double countout when Dorado prevented Carrillo from getting back in the ring and making the count.

Carrillo getting a Cruiserweight title shot at Clash of Champions was confirmed when he defeated Oney Lorcan in a number one contender’s match last week.
