Candice Michelle reflects on scary WWE broken collarbone injury

On the latest edition of Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Candice Michelle reflected on the scary fall that led to her broken collarbone during a match against Beth Phoenix on WWE Raw in 2007. She also revealed how John Cena and Randy Orton have shaped her view of the industry.

Michelle echoed Cena’s words on the brutal honesty of the business and admitted her instinct was always to rush back to the ring instead of focusing on healing. That perspective changed when she later viewed how Orton would use injuries as a time to recharge his batteries while out of action.

“[Cena] said the business goes on with or without you and I remember, going through that injury, and when wrestlers get injured, and when I was injured, I was doing everything to get back as fast as I could,” she said. “And actually, I learned after the fact, a little too late. I think Randy Orton has mastered that, because he went through a lot of injuries, but when he went on injury, and I don’t know this, it’s just how I see him, it’s like, he’s gonna go take his break, he’s gonna go heal up until he’s fully healed, have some time with his family, and come back when he’s ready.”

Michelle was asked about her Women’s Championship match against Beth Phoenix on an October 2007 edition of Raw. An accident led to the bout being cut short when Michelle took a fall from the top rope.

“Well, we were overseas, and we were putting together this match, and this is when Arn Anderson and Ricky Steamboat started to really train me. So, you see how really towards the end of my wrestling career is when I really felt like I was getting the knowledge,” she said. “It was the first time I understood that there’s a philosophy to the match. I literally had no idea. I was never taught it or anything. And there was something in me and Beth that resonated with Ricky and Arn Anderson, and they really stepped up to the plate, and they said, ‘This is how you got to start working this.’ And the fans were really getting behind us.

“And overseas, we’re having these great matches, and we had this move where I was going to — it was supposed to be, how you open your legs on the top rope and fall in. Just, I’m not that flexible, like I think about it to this day, I just saw somebody in TNA do this move, and I was like, yep, that’s not for me, right? So, I was like, I’ll do my knees instead. That seems a little less flexible.”

Michelle added how the pre-planned move went awry and led to a scary situation. In addition to the broken collarbone, she suffered a “massive” concussion.

“And overseas, I did it one time, and I came back and all the boys were worried because I landed on my neck. I didn’t feel it. It didn’t phase me. I was not injured. I wasn’t hurt, and so I didn’t really think much of it. But we’re on like a 7-10 day tour over there, not much sleep. We fly back to Nebraska. We’re going to kind of do this match again, and my boot catches that rope, and I wasn’t allocated that little extra space, and I landed on my head,” Michelle said.

“I was knocked out. I don’t remember it. The first thing I remember is being on the stretcher, and Stephanie McMahon was leaning over me, and they’re going into Gorilla, and she goes, ‘Don’t worry, we’re flying your husband out.’ I was like, they don’t fly your husband out. So, instantly I was worried. I had a massive concussion, and I broke my collarbone, so I just had one break in it, and flew home and started the rehab journey for that.

“And the hard part is, you know, it came at a time where we weren’t really educated with that kind of injury, and so being dragged to the center of the ring after that happened, if that was my neck, it would have paralyzed me.”

Michelle also went into detail about the rehab and recovery journey. After the incident, she returned in January 2008. However, a few months later she re-broke her collarbone in a tag team match with Maria Kanellis against Jillian Hall & Victoria. That required subsequent surgery forcing her to be out of in-ring competition again for most of that year.

It was recently announced that Michelle has returned to pro wrestling in a backstage capacity, signing a contract with TNA Wrestling for the new role.

Former WWE women’s star debuts at AEW All Out

On a day when husbands and wives will compete against each other on WWE Wrestlepalooza, a less discussed set of spouses reunited during AEW All Out.

Beth Copeland — the former Beth Phoenix in WWE — made her AEW on-screen debut during husband Adam Copeland and Christian Cage’s match against FTR that opened up the pay-per-view.

Following Stokely Hathaway’s continued interference, heavy metal music hit with flames on the video board. Eventually, the word “Beth” was on the screen and Copeland emerged to target the manager. She speared Hathaway and eventually carried him backstage.

After Adam picked up the win with a spear and pin on Cash Wheeler, Beth came back out to celebrate with her husband and Cage when Nick Wayne, Mother Wayne and Kip Sabian appeared and distracted them. FTR attacked Cage and Adam from behind, handcuffing him from behind.

Beth then kissed Adam and got physical with Wheeler and Harwood, slapping and punching them. The two then got her and hit her with a second rope spike piledriver while Adam had to watch.

She confirmed last August that she was no longer under WWE contract, but hasn’t wrestled since a mixed tag bout at 2023’s WWE Elimination Chamber.

Adam Copeland, Beth Phoenix & family safe following Hurricane Helene

Beth Phoenix posted a message to Instagram on Wednesday stating that she, Adam Copeland, and their family are all safe following Hurricane Helene.

The couple live in Asheville, North Carolina, which was hit hard by the storm. Phoenix says they were unable to contact anyone for several days and were without power, cell phone service, or water.

Phoenix also shared that her 8-year-old Ruby developed a skin infection and had an inspiring trip to the ER last Friday that included sharing a ride with several nurses.

She wrote on Instagram:

“Copeland Update:
The Copeland Family is safe and gathered together. Thank you to all that have reached out!! After several days of no cell phones, no power, no water, limited gas and travel, we are finally getting our feet back on the ground. We have been blessed to be unharmed and have minimal damage to our home and our loved ones’ homes after the catastrophic Hurricane Helene. Because we have had limited access to the internet or media, this is the first time I have been able to observe all of the horrifying footage of our beloved Asheville and affected areas through the lens of others. To say I am overwhelmed is an understatement. While we all grieve, process, and rebuild as a community, I wanted to share a story of an experience we had.”

“Last Friday my 8-year-old Ruby began showing symptoms of a spreading skin infection. Despite doing what I could to treat her at home, by Sunday it was evident she needed to see a doctor. With no phone, no power…no urgent care… I made the decision to drive to the ER. My drive took me through Biltmore Village which I was stunned to see had been totally washed away and guarded by police blockade along with several people in scrubs. I pulled up and begged the officer if he knew of another route to the ER? Or if the ER was even there anymore? The kind officer rerouted me and asked me if I could take these CNAs and Nurses with me.”

“We gratefully welcomed our passengers and headed to the ER. During the ride, they filled me in on what they had seen the last 3 days… I was astounded to learn that they have been living at the hospital to meet the need of low staff and immense need. Stories of surgeries and life-saving rescues done with no power… leaving their families to come and do their best to save ours. Selflessly stepping up during a historic tragedy, to demonstrate the best of humanity. All the while, Ruby sat silently in the backseat absorbing all of this.”

“After a scary drive through the wreckage of downtown and the river arts district, we made it to the hospital. Ruby was eventually seen and we were able to get compassionate care. While at the hospital I was able to get WiFi. Ruby asked to use my phone and sent her Dad this text:

Phoenix’s post continues:

“Thank you to all of our essential workers, medical (of which my sister-in-law @shenanrice2015 is one), law enforcement, fire, Duke Energy, our water department, and all those pouring their hearts into our community in this time of need. I have no words for the gratitude I feel in my heart for what you are doing. #828Strong”

“So glad you guys are all safe!!” Renee Paquette responded to her post.

“So happy you guys are safe. You’ve been on my mind and in my heart. Ruby really put things in perspective,” wrote Natalya.

FTR’s Cash Wheeler also lives in the area. He has been sharing a GoFundMe for relief efforts. Tony Khan, Chris Jericho, and Nick Jackson have all donated to the campaign. Just under $57 thousand has been raised as of Wednesday.

An update was posted to the GoFundMe recently that reads:

*Update* We are so blown away by the generosity of everyone who has contributed, we continue to increase the goal. What originally was a hope to help deliver supplies has grown into a substantial relief initiative. We are so thankful and plan to distribute funds to as many outlets as we can. If you have any suggestions of local shelters, businesses or animal rescues, please leave on the comment board.”

As of this writing, 167 people are confirmed dead due to Hurricane Helene, with another 685 missing. It is already the deadliest storm in the United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Beth Phoenix confirms she’s no longer under WWE contract

WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix is officially a free agent.

Three weeks ago, it was reported that Phoenix was no longer under contract with WWE. She confirmed that news while appearing on the latest episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet.

“I am not [under contract with WWE]. I am currently a free agent,” Phoenix said. “I have a great relationship with WWE. I treasured my time there. I feel like there’s more, there’s other opportunities that have presented themselves. And I feel the motivation right now to kind of explore, and explore what else is out there and explore myself. But my relationship with WWE hasn’t changed. I have so many friends there, and I appreciate and I enjoy the product as I always have. I love NXT, I have a special place in my heart for NXT, of course. And just the system and seeing young people come up and go through that excitement of developing themselves for the big time. So I just — I love WWE, I always will.”

When asked if those opportunities are related to wrestling or not, Phoenix said it’s “everything else” with some wrestling opportunities in there as well. She mentioned potentially opening a wrestling school as being one of those opportunities.

Phoenix was retired from 2012-2018. She’s had sporadic matches since then, most recently competing alongside her husband Adam Copeland in a mixed tag bout at WWE Elimination Chamber 2023. Phoenix is also a former commentator for WWE NXT.

Copeland is now with AEW but is recovering from a fractured leg that he suffered this May.

In regards to potentially having one more match, Phoenix gave the “age-old cliche answer” of “never say never.”

“It really just depends on the opportunities and what suits our family,” she told Van Vliet. “That’s really it.”

Report: Beth Phoenix no longer under contract with WWE

It appears that WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix is no longer signed to the company.

PWInsider reported on Friday that Phoenix is no longer under contract with WWE. Earlier this week, WrestleTalk published an article stating that Phoenix’s profile had been removed from the active roster page on WWE’s website. She is listed in the alumni and Hall of Fame sections.

Phoenix hasn’t wrestled since February 2023 and has only had occasional matches since coming out of retirement. She was a commentator for NXT from 2019-2021.

After retiring in 2012, Phoenix returned to the ring for a cameo in the 2018 women’s Royal Rumble. She’s had five televised matches since then. Phoenix teamed with her husband Adam Copeland in mixed tag team bouts at Royal Rumble 2022 and Elimination Chamber 2023.

Copeland (WWE legend Edge) is now with AEW but is currently out of action after fracturing his leg this May. After his debut for the promotion last year, Copeland was asked if we could see him and Phoenix work together again in AEW.

“I mean, any time I get to be close to Beth obviously I’m gonna be super excited about that. I don’t know about the possibilities of that in the foreseeable [future], but I love being around her obviously,” he responded. “And we’ve had a blast when we did get to work together. But where she will be instrumental without everyone knowing it is she’s my sounding board. So if you’ve seen me do something, or you see something that you think worked, it was always bounced off Beth and then she always gives me better ideas back. It’s kind of amazing to be married to a Hall of Famer, it’s pretty cool… who can suplex you.”

Phoenix voices the opening of her husband’s AEW theme music. She was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.

Beth Phoenix voices opening of Adam Copeland’s AEW theme music

Though she isn’t part of the company, Beth Phoenix is still playing some role in Adam Copeland’s AEW run.

Copeland confirmed to Bleacher Report’s Chris Mueller that Phoenix voices the “You think you know him” at the beginning of his AEW theme music. Copeland and Phoenix, who have been married since 2016, recorded the clip for Copeland’s music themselves.

“I don’t know if this counts as breaking news or whatever, but I was able to confirm with him today that not only is the voice at the beginning of Adam Copeland’s AEW entrance music that of Beth Phoenix, but that it was Edge and Beth who recorded the clip themselves,” Mueller wrote on social media.

Copeland retained “Metalingus” by Alter Bridge as his AEW theme song. It was also his music in WWE. The opening from Phoenix is a new addition to the theme.

Copeland and Phoenix are both WWE Hall of Famers. Copeland was inducted in 2012 and Phoenix was inducted in 2017.

While speaking at the post-WrestleDream media scrum following his AEW debut. Copeland was asked if we could see him and Phoenix work together in AEW. Copeland said he doesn’t know about the possibility of that in the foreseeable future, but Phoenix is always vital to his work as a sounding board.

I mean, any time I get to be close to Beth obviously I’m gonna be super excited about that. I don’t know about the possibilities of that in the foreseeable, but I love being around her obviously.

And we’ve had a blast when we did get to work together. But where she will be instrumental without everyone knowing it is she’s my sounding board. So if you’ve seen me do something, or you see something that you think worked, it was always bounced off Beth and then she always gives me better ideas back. It’s kind of amazing to be married to a Hall of Famer, it’s pretty cool… who can suplex you.

In WWE, Copeland and Phoenix teamed together twice in mixed tag matches. The couple has two daughters together.

Copeland is scheduled to appear on both AEW Dynamite and Collision this week. His AEW in-ring debut will be against Luchasaurus at Dynamite Title Tuesday on October 10.

Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. Finn Balor & Rhea Ripley set for WWE Elimination Chamber

A mixed tag match has been added to Elimination Chamber.

Edge and Beth Phoenix will face Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley in Montreal on February 18. This follows an in-ring promo that took place on Monday’s Raw between Edge, Beth Phoenix, and members of the Judgement Day.

Raw opened on Monday with Edge and Beth Phoenix coming out to talk about their return at the Royal Rumble. This brought out Judgment Day, minus Rhea Ripley who was not at Monday’s show. After some back and forth, Phoenix issued the challenge for Elimination Chamber, with Judgement Day accepting. Judgement Day went for the attack on Edge and Phoenix, but were ultimately stopped by The Street Profits.

Edge and Phoenix were taken out of action back at last year’s Extreme Rules event, after members of The Judgment Day gave both conchairtos. They returned last weekend, with Edge throwing out Finn Balor and Damian Priest from the men’s Rumble match. Ripley went to attack Edge, but was met by Phoenix, who gave Ripley a spear.

Here is the updated lineup for the Elimination Chamber:

WWE Elimination Chamber, Saturday, February 18, 8 p.m. Eastern time on Peacock & WWE Network —

  • Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Sami Zayn
  • Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley
  • Elimination Chamber match for the United States Championship: Austin Theory (c) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Bronson Reed vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Damian Priest vs. TBD
  • Elimination Chamber match, winner challenges Bianca Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania: Asuka vs. Liv Morgan vs. Raquel Rodriguez vs. Nikki Cross vs. Natalya vs. TBD

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • Edge talked to Sports Illustrated about his recent storyline, teaming with wife Beth Phoenix in a feud with The Miz and Maryse. We never thought this would be a possibility,” Edge said. “I was forced to retire [in 2011]. A year later, Beth retired. Then we started having kids. Coming back to wrestling was never on the docket for me, let alone come back and be asked, ‘What do you think about teaming together for a month? We’re having so much fun. Riding together, flying together. That’s the only part of the job that can be unenjoyable at times, but when you have your best friend next to you, it’s a lot more fun.”
  • Roman Reigns also spoke to Sports Illustrated on his recent battle with COVID-19 that kept him off the Day 1 pay-per-view earlier this month. “For me, obviously in comparison to some of the worst scenarios that are out there and that we’ve seen through the pandemic, it wasn’t bad. For me, it was mainly a pretty good sinus infection, a bronchitis cough, a lot of chest tightness. I still feel that actually. When I’m doing my conditioning because we don’t wrestle quite as much and we’re doing a lot of six-man [tag team matches], I don’t have singles matches as much as I used to, so I have to continue to really push the conditioning on my own and I’ve noticed in the past couple of weeks that when I really blow myself up on the bike or running, or whatever I’m doing, I can feel that tightness and a little bit of wheezing. So it’s definitely something serious. As someone who is vaccinated and boosted, it still got to me and I still felt the effects. While they weren’t as severe as they can be for some, it did hang around and linger for a while.”
  • The new date for the WWE/Cathrine Alexander trial is set for 9/26. Alexander is a tattoo artist suing WWE over Randy Orton’s appearance in the WWE 2K video game series, saying that she never gave permission for her work to be used in the game.
  • Saurav Gurjar made his return to NXT last night, aligning himself with Grayson Waller and going under the name Sanga.
  • Seth Rollins spoke to talkSPORT about his recent Mox namedrop during a promo between himself and Roman Reigns. “I’m not going to sit here and ignore that history, I’m going to bring that up because I think that’s important. And I think people who care about that appreciate it. It’s one of those things where it was on the tip of my tongue, it made sense, so it came.”
  • WWE’s latest trademarks include the terms “The Queen” and “Sudu Sudah”.
  • WWE Music Group has released a soundtrack for NXT 2.0 called “As Close As It Gets”, which is out now on Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube.
  • Booker T on his Hall of Fame podcast talked about Mustafa Ali requesting his release from WWE. “This is entertainment, this is not reality TV,” he said. “The embellishment is to be between the actors and the writers, and if you come in with an idea, it might not be something they want to do with you. The company is going to be run the way they want to be run. They aren’t going to run the way you want it. Therefore, if that happens, boom, move on and get out.” Ali reportedly had his request to be released denied by WWE.
  • Free matches added to WWE’s YouTube today include the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal from the WrestleMania 35 kickoff show, Finn Balor vs. Ilja Dragunov from WWE Worlds Collide 2020, and Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns from WWE Royal Rumble 2021.

Edge & Beth Phoenix to face Miz & Maryse at WWE Royal Rumble

A mixed tag team match has been set for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view on January 29.

Edge and wife Beth Phoenix will team together to take on The Miz and his wife, Maryse. The match was made following a segment on tonight’s Raw that had Miz confront Edge over the events of Day 1 this past Saturday.

Miz accused Edge of hiding behind his wife Phoenix, who made her WWE TV return at Day 1 as Maryse was on the apron distracting the referee. That allowed Edge to spear a distracted Miz for the win. Phoenix, on Raw, said that it was all her idea. Edge then suggested the tag match for the Royal Rumble. Miz didn’t seem too enthused about taking the match, but Phoenix eventually pressured him into accepting, which Maryse didn’t like.

Edge and Miz have been feuding following Edge’s arrival to Raw following the Royal Rumble. Since returning from Dancing with the Stars, Maryse has been at Miz’s side. After attempting to fool Edge by teasing a split, Miz and Maryse renewed their vows last week on Raw. However, Edge interrupted the proceedings, leading to a “Brood bath”, where some sort of colored liquid fell from the ceiling landed on the two.

Beth Phoenix returns to WWE TV at Day 1

Beth Phoenix made her WWE return tonight at Day 1, aiding husband Edge during his match with The Miz.

Miz throughout the match had plenty of help with wife Maryse at ringside. Towards the end of the match, Maryse hit Edge with a bag that allowed Miz to score a close pinfall following a skull crushing finale. As Maryse was arguing with the referee on the apron, Phoenix appeared on the entrance ramp and headed toward the ring, driving Maryse away. Miz and Phoenix exchanged words as Edge recovered. When Miz turned around, Edge hit the spear and pinned Miz to win the match.

Phoenix had been an NXT commentator from 2019 until last month, when she announced that she would be stepping away from announcer duties. Her last appearance was at NXT War Games.

Edge has been feuding with Miz since he was traded to Raw as part of the 2021 WWE Draft. When The Miz returned to WWE television, Maryse returned as well, with the current feud revolving around Miz & Maryse’s relationship.

Beth Phoenix departing NXT commentary, will remain with WWE

Beth Phoenix will be departing the NXT commentary desk following Sunday’s WarGames event.

Phoenix issued a statement today announcing that she’s decided to step away from her weekly NXT commentary role to spend more time with her family. Phoenix noted that she’ll remain part of WWE.

Phoenix has been a member of the NXT commentary team alongside Vic Joseph and Wade Barrett.

“Ahead of WarGames, I wanted to share that this Sunday will be my final night in NXT. While I will remain a part of WWE, I have made the choice to step away from the weekly broadcast booth to spend more time with my family. This was not an easy decision, as I have loved my three plus years and 135 episodes with NXT and am incredibly proud of the brand,” Phoenix wrote.

“I will forever be grateful to Vic Joseph, Wade Barrett, Nigel McGuinness, Tom Phillips, Mauro Ranallo, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Michael Cole, and my entire NXT family both in and out of the ring for the amazing opportunity. NXT will always be a part of me and Auntie Betty will always be a part of NXT. Leave the porch light on for me!”

Phoenix was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.

WarGames will be NXT’s first streaming special since being rebranded as “NXT 2.0.”

WWE’s Beth Phoenix releasing ‘Stone Rose & Bone’ EP

WWE Hall of Famer and NXT commentator Beth “Phoenix” Copeland is releasing an album this week.

Copeland announced on Twitter today that Stone Rose & Bone will be released on major music streaming services on Friday, November 12.

“I am so proud to announce that THIS FRIDAY Nov 12 my debut EP will be released on all major music platforms! Music has always been a huge part of my heart and I’m so excited to share it with you! @wwe @WWENXT #piano #StoneRoseBone”

Copeland will also be appearing on WWE’s The Bump on Wednesday, November 10 to promote the EP.

Copeland has posted video of her musical talents on her social media channels over the years, including piano covers of pop songs and entrance music, as well as blues guitar riffs.

Copeland joined the NXT commentary team in May 2019. She remains the lone holdover from the commentary team when NXT debuted on USA Network in September 2019.

WWE.com wrote about Legends Night:

Some of your favorite WWE Legends and Hall of Famers will return for Raw Legends Night on the first Monday Night Raw of the new year. The guest list is already set to feature two of the greatest of all time: ‘The Immortal’ Hulk Hogan and ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair.

Will your favorite WWE Legend show up on this epic night?

There’s no telling what surprises are in store when Raw Legends’ Night rings in 2021 on Monday, January 4 at 8/7 C on USA Network!

The announcement of Legends Night comes after Raw drew its lowest ratings in history last Monday. The week after Legends Night, Raw will face competition from college football’s National Championship game.

Edge appearance confirmed for Monday’s WWE Raw

For the first time since the angle where he was attacked by Randy Orton the night after the Royal Rumble, Edge is returning to WWE television.

WWE has officially confirmed that Edge will appear on Monday’s episode of Raw. The show is taking place at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Capital One Arena had advertised last month that Edge would be returning on the episode.

Edge’s return comes after Beth Phoenix was laid out with an RKO by Orton at the end of Raw this past Monday. WWE had advertised that Phoenix would be on the show to give an update on Edge’s condition, but Orton interrupted her after she came to the ring.

Orton told Phoenix that he owed her an explanation for why he attacked Edge. He claimed that he loves Edge and was doing what was best for him by making sure he wouldn’t continue wrestling after returning at the Royal Rumble. Orton called Edge a junkie for the roar of the crowd and said Phoenix is an enabler. Orton also said he loved Edge & Phoenix’s kids more than Phoenix does.

Phoenix slapped and kicked Orton and was then laid out by an RKO. The show ended with referees, officials, and Natalya, Zack Ryder, Curt Hawkins, R-Truth, and Rey Mysterio coming down to check on Phoenix.

Edge vs. Orton is set for WrestleMania 36 but hasn’t been officially announced yet. It will be Edge’s first singles match since he had to retire in 2011.

Monday’s Raw will also feature the fallout from Elimination Chamber.
