Leva Bates addresses departure from AEW

Leva Bates has addressed her departure from AEW.

Bates announced on May 1 that her contract with the promotion had expired and would not be renewed. The following day, she addressed leaving AEW during a live Twitch stream

Bates said:

Yes, I am no longer with AEW but that is okay. I put a lot of love and effort and energy into that place and no regrets. I’m so happy to be there from day one before we even had a show, before we even had our first pay-per-view. I have made history, I am a part of history. So, I am forever grateful and forever will just be so thankful to have been a part of that.

But as you know, probably realized, I am not performing as much as I’d like to perform. So I’m taking all of this energy and focussing it on trying to make things happen, trying to wrestle as many places as I can, to go who knows where? I’m trying to act. I have some stuff lined up to get me on my journey.

She continued to say that she already has some independent dates booked.

Bates revealed later in the stream that she found out she no longer had a job while at the dentist.

On Saturday, Fightful reported that AEW never discussed Bates’ contract status with her. She only found out when people called to check on her after they heard the news through an internal AEW email.

There were also said to be several people in AEW who pushed for her to remain with the company upon hearing the news.

Bates trained at the 3D Academy before making her pro debut in 2006. Before signing with AEW in 2019, she wrestled with promotions such as Shimmer and Shine. Bates also had a run in TNA and on WWE NXT as “Blue Pants.”

Leva Bates announces AEW departure after contract expires

Leva Bates is no longer with AEW.

Bates announced on Monday that she is departing AEW after her contract expired.

“As of today, my contract with AEW has expired,” she wrote on Twitter. “The last four years have been quite a ride; I’ve learned so much and grown exponentially. I’ve seen wrestling history take place as someone who was on the team since before the first show. I appreciate & love all the crew, staff, and talent; I will cherish all our memories together.”

“I’ve given my time, my focus, and my effort to the company, but now I’ve got to focus on myself, my future, and my career,” she added. “ I hope you all, my friends, fans, and loved ones, stay with me through this next chapter of my journey. I hope to make you all proud no matter where I go.”

Bates had been with AEW since the company’s start in 2019, competing in the women’s division under a librarian gimmick. She had not been featured on television in recent years. Her only match in 2023 took place on the February 15 edition of AEW Dark: Elevation where she, Willow Nightingale, and Madison Rayne lost to Emi Sakura, Marina Shafir, and Nyla Rose.

AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup results: Final opening round matches

by Parker Klyn

Tonight is week two of AEW’s Deadly Draw Women’s Tag Team Cup, as we conclude the first round of matchups. Shaul Guerrero is the ring announcer, and Tony Schiavone is joined by Veda Scott on commentary.

Previously announced for today’s show was AEW backstage interviewer Dasha Gonzalez & former WWE developmental talent Rachael Ellering (daughter of Paul Ellering) vs. Ivelisse and Diamante.

The opening video package and song for this tournament is excellent. AEW has a bit of a depth problem in their women’s division but it really makes them look like stars.

Big Swole was interviewed backstage, and the interviewer had a surprise for her. It was Lil Swole, known as Nicole Savoy in the indies. It was also revealed that Leva Bates is teaming with Rache Chanel, and they faced off next.

First Round: Big Swole & Lil Swole defeated Leva Bates & Rache Chanel (with Peter Avalon)

This was the weakest match of the tournament yet. Bates and Chanel did some comedy, so while the Swoles looked dominant, it was hard to take their opponents seriously. Bates’ work was okay but Chanel looked really weak. Lil Swole looked very competent, however –– she deserves a contract in this division, although the fact that she is in fact bigger than Big Swole is a bit comedic.

Bates did her shushing gimmick during her entrance. She also brought a fashion book as a gift for Chanel. This was also Big Swole’s first match back from kayfabe suspension.

Chanel and Lil Swole started off. Schiavone and Scott put over Lil Swole’s technical aptitude. Chanel and Bates teased dissension, as well as being in over their heads against their more-talented opponents.

The Swoles performed some cool tag maneuvers and Lil Swole locked in a modified crossface on Chanel, but Avalon distracted the ref and Chanel attacked with a ruler.

Lil Swole eventually made a comeback to get the hot tag to Big Swole. Big Swole got a visual pinfall on Bates, but Chanel broke it up in a mistimed spot. The finish came when the Swoles hit a combination flatliner/blockbuster on Bates.

We got an advertisement for All Elite Heels, the new women-focused wrestling community established by Brandi Rhodes.

Ivelisse and Diamante were shown meeting after their chip selections.

Dasha was told by Shaul Guerrero that she’d be competing in the tournament, which surprised her. When she drew her chip, Rachael Ellering showed up, and they tried to get across that they recognized and remembered each other from working in WWE.

First Round: Ivelisse & Diamante defeated Rachael Ellering & Dasha

As far as I can tell, this was only the second professional match of Dasha’s career, and her first in almost five years. You honestly wouldn’t have known it. While still very green and indecisive at times, Dasha’s a great athlete and she didn’t have a single noticeable botch.

In terms of the match, it wasn’t anything special but it was still better than everything else in the tournament’s first round. There was a classic, simple tag formula with by far the best face/heel dynamic we’ve seen in the Deadly Draw.

Dasha performed a corner arm-drag and a kip-up at the bell. She kept the offense up with a running dropkick before tagging in Ellering. Dasha also performed a nice cartwheel splash.

Ivelisse and Diamante eventually cut off Dasha and worked her over, performing frequent tags and hitting lots of double-teams. Dasha eventually escaped to Ellering for the hot tag.

Ellering hit some great knife-edged chops on Ivelisse and nearly got a pinfall with a running senton. Diamante held Ellering against the ropes, but Ellering escaped and Ivelisse hit her partner off the apron. Ellering almost got the pinfall with a springboard leg drop, but Diamante broke it up.

After tagging in, Diamante hit a nice-looking cazadora stunner on Dasha, who kicked out. The heels hit a couple more double-teams. Diamante dispatched Ellering, and Ivelisse hit the running Yoshi Tonic for the win.

Alex Marvez interviewed the Swoles backstage. They were really charismatic, and I expect them to be the favorites (along with Brandi and Allie) going forward.

Marvez then interviewed Dasha. She views this match as a starting point, and hopes that she gets a chance to compete again. She thanked AEW for the opportunity.

Finally, Marvez interviewed Ivelisse and Diamante. Ivelisse said they got off to a rocky start, but their respect for the craft is what pushed them through.

Next Monday will be the semifinals, where Big & Lil Swole will face the Nightmare Sisters and Ivelisse & Diamante will face Tay Conti & Anna Jay.

The show was about 37 minutes, almost the exact same length as last week.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, I thought the second week of the Deadly Draw was better than the first. The opener was pretty miserable as a match, but Lil Swole is someone AEW should be chomping at the bit to bring in more often. The main event was a good match, with the novelty of Dasha competing making it even more compelling.

I’m still waiting to see what the outcome of this tournament will be, although the idea of it returning next year with (hopefully) access to international talent should make it a far more worthwhile endeavor.

The Big News: Death Triangle ran in after the main event to lay a beating on five babyfaces. It took three more, in the form of Best Friends and Orange Cassidy, to run them off.

When looking up this episode on YouTube I couldn’t help but notice the large number of episodes (including this one) where the thumbnail is of the Jurassic Express.

**********

Jurassic Express (with Marko Stunt) defeated Kip Sabian & Peter Avalon (with Penelope Ford & Leva Bates)

Speaking of the Jurassic Express, they are here to kick off Dark this week. Avalon, who comes into this match at 0-10, took forever to start his promo. He got as far as saying we were in Denver before the Express’ music began. This doesn’t seem right, but the graphic indicates this is only the second time Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus are teaming together in a two-on-two tag match.

Jungle Boy ran wild on both heels and was going for some sort of slingshot maneuver, but Penelope tripped him up and Sabian took over. Sabian and Avalon worked well together. Avalon missed a beautiful moonsault, giving Jungle Boy room to crawl for a tag. However. Ford grabbed one of Leva’s books and threw it into the ring to distract the referee, so the heels kept control.

Unfortunately for Sabian and Avalon, their ladies could not get along. Bates and Ford began arguing with one another, which distracted the team long enough for Luchasaurus to get the tag. He had it almost had it won with a moonsault to Avalon, but Sabian bum-rushed into the pile, breaking up the cover. Luchasaurus gave Sabian the tail whip, allowing Jungle Boy to pin Avalon following an assisted cutter.

Tony Schiavone and Dasha Gonzalez previewed the rest of the show. Dasha wanted to know why Tony was wearing a Nightmare Family shirt. Turns out 20% of the proceeds of that shirt up until March 14 will be donated to Planned Pethood.

Jimmy Havoc defeated Severino Corrente

I believe “Severino Corrente” loosely translates to “lamb being led to slaughter.”

Corrente had his fingers yanked back. Most people would be like “I’m done”. Instead Corrente punched Havoc to no avail. Jimmy used a discus elbow to the face and went for some sort of fireman’s carry, but Corrente raked the eyes.

Corrente started to build momentum, but then he ran chest-first into Jimmy’s feet. He did duck an Acid Rainmaker and used a German suplex into the corner turnbuckles. He tried to fishhook Havoc, but instead Jimmy bit his fingers. A series of impact moves followed, including a leg hook DDT and finished off Corrente with an Acid Rainmaker for the pin.

Havoc beckoned to the back, daring Luther and Mel to come out. Unfortunately, you get what you ask for, as Luther flew down the ramp and attacked Havoc from behind, eventually laying out Havoc with a DDT on the ramp.

**********

Hikaru Shida defeated Abadon

Abadon is one of the most unique looking wrestlers on the roster. She has done her face paint to look like blood is seeping from her forehead into her eye and down her cheek. She is certainly a sight to behold. By comparison, Hikaru Shida does not look like she has blood coming out of her eye.

Some of the crowd chanted for Abadon to “eat her soul” despite being the heel and Shida being very well liked. Abadon tried to eat Shida’s hand, which threw off the number one ranked contender. Abadon looked really good here and I really hope she’s not one and done. Abadon had her tied in the ropes and licked Shida’s face. Shida was not happy about this, possibly for more than one reason.

Abadon didn’t sell for much, but she definitely felt it when Shida used a running knee in the corner and a missile dropkick. Shida nailed a knee to the back of the head, but Abadon almost won with the Edge-a-matic. Shida finally managed to hit a Shining Wizard for the win.

**********

Backstage, Dasha asked Jimmy Havoc for an update on his injuries. Havoc thanked Luther for doing it, so being the nice guy Luther is, he attacked Havoc again and had to be dragged away.

**********

The Librarians were telling us about the newest book of the month, which is Written In The Stars. They came upon Colt Cabana, who was listening to a podcast instead of reading a book. Avalon kept recommending authors, so Colt recommended podcasts. This led to a challenge for a match.

Leva went back and told Colt she loves his podcast.

**********

Private Party defeated Sonny Kiss & Brandon Cutler

A few weeks ago, Cutler almost beat Private Party by himself when his partner, Shawn Spears walked out. So how will things be when he has a loyal partner? Either way, Cutler is dueling it out with Peter Avalon for the worst record in AEW at 0-9.

Cutler did a great job countering Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen, much like he did the last time they met. This time Sonny got involved and it ended up in a standoff. Excalibur wondered if Quen and Sonny got their hair done at the same place, which led Taz to say he thinks they go to the same “Dye-ist”. While this conversation was going on, Kiss went down to a combo Rude Awakening/Double Foot Stomp, giving Private Party the advantage.

Private Party mimicked Kiss while getting the heat on him. Cutler got the hot tag and used a beautiful springboard double clothesline. Cutler looked good, laying a beating on both men. We did have a contrived spot where Kassidy was laying on the middle rope and had to stay hanging there while Cutler did moves to Quen first.

Get out the hammer and nails, because this team of Cutler and Kiss are BUILDING MOMENTUM! Kiss went for a boot on Quen, but Marq moved and Kiss ended up in the splits. Quen went for what turned into a Moonsault with double knees. Cutler got in and started doing moves without getting a tag. The referee kept telling him he’s not legal, but Cutler ignored him and hit the TPK on both members of Private Party. Kiss went to the middle rope, but Kassidy prevented him from leaping off. Quen tagged in as Private Party nailed Kiss with the Gin and Juice for the win.

Suddenly, from out of nowhere (or just off the camera), Death Triangle ran in to attack Private Party! PAC, Pentagon and Fenix ended up laying out not only them, but also Cutler and Kiss, who tried to make the save.

PAC took the mic and told all of AEW that if they continue to disrespect athletes of their caliber, they’ll get exactly what they asked for. Joey Janela tried to run in for the save, but was also laid out. Best Friends and Orange Cassidy then hit the ring to send the Death Triangle reeling as the show closed

WWE STOMPING GROUNDS PPV FROM THE TACOMA DOME AT 6:30 P.M. EASTERN TIME ON WWE NETWORK

*Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin for Universal title with a special referee – Will be interesting as expectations for this are low, but I can’t see Rollins having two average matches in a row on PPV.  Plus, he pretty much put himself out where he has to deliver a big performance as he claimed WWE was the best wrestling in the world and got nothing but mocking responses for it, including by Chris Jericho.  So I expect a much better match than two weeks ago.  Rollins is a -270 favorite to win.

*Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler cage match for WWE title – The problem with a WWE cage match is it’s supposed to have no interference and guarantee a decisive winner, but it usually means lots of interference and a gimmicked ending.  Kingston at -1200 is a gigantic favorite to retain.

*Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre – The expectation here is that Shane McMahon interferes, and maybe Elias as well.  Because of that, Reigns is a -175 favorite.  Their last match was nothing special, but the track record of both guys would indicate it should be much better here.

*Becky Lynch vs. Lacey Evans for Raw women’s title – This is a big test for Evans.  Their last match was also so-so and Evans needs a good match here.   Their house show match last night was said to be a big improvement over their first match.  Lynch is a -245 favorite.

*Bayley vs. Alexa Bliss for Smackdown women’s title – This was a really bad feud a few years back.  Bayley is a strong -490 favorite to retain.

*Samoa Joe vs. Ricochet for U.S. title – On paper this should be a great match.  Win or lose, it’s important for Ricochet to have an NXT level performance.  There’s no reason he shouldn’t except if he either has a bad night or is overproduced.  Joe is a -290 favorite to retain.

*Big E & Xavier Woods vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn – Tag match that should be good.  Logically, if Owens is being moved back into the title picture, that he should score the pin here.  Logical rarely goes hand in hand with decision in WWE.  Owens & Zayn are -135 with money coming in on New Day late.

*Tony Nese vs. Akira Tozawa vs. Drew Gulak for cruiserweight title – These matches are always good and always struggle getting a reaction since the 205 Live guys are never on television and positioned as not being important.  Nese is a -230 to win while Tozawa is +365 and Gulak is +425.

*Daniel Bryan & Rowan vs. Heavy Machinery for Smackdown tag titles – The crowd reaction in Washington should be most interesting.  Bryan &  Rowan are -420 favorites.

Raw is Monday night from Everett, WA.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back talking Stomping Grounds and the rest of the latest news tonight.  You can send questions to the show to [email protected]

Regarding the story Bryan broke last night, on Monday before Raw at a meeting Vince McMahon said that real sports don’t have action during commercial breaks so they won’t anymore.  So that’s why they are doing two or three fall matches, elimination matches and did that hokey spot in the Daniel Bryan vs. Seth Rollins match on Monday.  So that’s the rule right now.  It’s one of those rules a lot of people expect will be forgotten about soon.

Rafael Lovato Jr. beat Gegard Mousasi via decision is an off-TV (in the U.S., was on in the U.K. on Ch. 5) to win the Bellator middleweight title last night at the O2 Arena in London.

For the weekend, the only combat sports stuff that trended was the Paulie Malignaggi vs. Artem Lobov Bare Knuckle boxing match that was the second most searched item on Google yesterday with 200,000.  I’ll bet this is like Ortiz-Liddell where people were curious but didn’t actually buy the show, but hopefully we’ll have PPV numbers this week.  Still, that’s what the AEW show did and probably what Stomping Grounds today will do.  The UFC show was 14th with 20,000.  Bellator didn’t even get 20,000, although I didn’t expect that they would.

For AEW, the Leva Bates vs. Kylie Rae match for Sunday wasn’t supposed to be announced and we’re told it’s probably changing. The plan is for a three fight preshow at 7:30 p.m. Eastern and the main show starts at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.  The preshow is Alex Jebailey vs. Michael Nakazawa in a hardcore match and a tag team title tournament match with Scorpio Sky & Frankie Kazarian vs. Private Party vs. Trent Baretta & Chuckie T.  There will probably be a third match announced this week which is the spot Bates vs. Rae would have.

NHK News in Japan did a very good English language piece on New Japan Pro Wrestling, covering MSG & Dominion.  Among those interviewed are Fumi Saito from this site, several fans, Harold Meij and lots of Japanese history talk,.  From a pure facts standpoint it’s so much better than American media wrestling stories and there are Rikidozan clips and talk in the piece.
