Jelly Roll loses WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam

Jelly Roll put in a strong effort and had the fans on his side, but he ultimately came up short in his WWE in-ring debut.

The 40-year-old country music star teamed with Randy Orton at SummerSlam night one, losing to Logan Paul & Drew McIntyre. It was Paul who got the victory for the heels, pinning Jelly Roll after the two celebrities were the only two left in the ring.

Jelly Roll got off to a good start before Paul took him out with a frog splash through the announce table. WWE teased that Jelly Roll wouldn’t be able to continue, but he refused to abandon his tag partner. Jelly Roll returned to the match, delivering a chokeslam to Paul and a Bossman slam to McIntyre. He then hit a powerslam on Paul, but McIntyre broke up the pin before the referee could count to three.

The closing stretch saw McIntyre hit a Claymore on Jelly Roll before Orton laid out McIntyre with an RKO. Paul then threw Orton into the ring post and hit another frog splash on Jelly Roll for the victory.

Jelly Roll, who has lost approximately 200 pounds since his highest weight, did reach a huge milestone by weighing in at 299 pounds for tonight’s match. It’s the first time he’s been under 300 pounds since grade school.

A longtime WWE fan, Jelly Roll earned respect from wrestlers and fans for how hard he worked to prepare for this match. He was training at the WWE Performance Center “every day” for weeks leading into SummerSlam. In the first week of that training, he suffered a broken pinky finger.

“He’s working as hard as anyone — if not harder — than anyone that I’ve ever seen come into our world,” Orton told ESPN’s Get Up prior to SummerSlam.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted out a video of him and Jelly Roll sharing a moment backstage after the match.

Women’s Tag Team titles change hands at WWE SummerSlam

New Women’s Tag Team Champions were crowned at WWE SummerSlam with frenemies Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss winning the belts.

SummerSlam 2025 night one saw Charlotte & Bliss defeat Judgment Day’s Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez to become the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. Despite a tease that Charlotte & Bliss could turn against each other, they stayed on the same page with Bliss pinning Perez to get the victory.

There was a miscommunication near the end of the match where Bliss went to strike Rodriguez but accidentally hit Charlotte instead. Charlotte looked like she might give Bliss a receipt for that, but she instead took out Rodriguez so Bliss could hit Sister Abigail on Perez for the win.

After the match, Charlotte pulled Bliss in for a hug and they celebrated with their newly won belts.

The story leading into SummerSlam was that, despite their bond clearly growing, Charlotte & Bliss claimed not to be friends and said that they were only allies of convenience.

Ahead of SummerSlam, Charlotte told The Wrestling Classic that she’s the happiest she’s ever been in her career — and this team with Bliss is something she needed both personally and professionally. Bliss also expressed to Fox News Digital that she’s enjoying the “fun dynamic” she has with Charlotte.

Both Charlotte and Bliss are former Women’s Tag Team Champions, but this is their first time holding the titles together. Charlotte was champion with Asuka before, while Bliss has had reigns with Asuka and Nikki Cross.

Judgment Day’s Women’s Tag Team title reign began in April with Rodriguez & Liv Morgan as champions. With Morgan being forced out of action due to a shoulder injury, Perez stepped in as Rodriguez’s new partner at the end of June. WWE recognizes it as two separate title reigns.

CM Punk looking forward to main eventing WWE SummerSlam night one

The main event of SummerSlam night one appears to officially be set with CM Punk saying he’s looking forward to headlining the show.

To promote SummerSlam, Punk was a guest on the Good Guy/Bad Guy Podcast with UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen. They asked Punk how important it is for him to main event Saturday’s card against World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.

“Me main eventing, I think it’s important. It’s important for the title. I think it’s important for Gunther,” Punk said. “I think the title should more often times than not always be featured in a main event. So, you know, I’m looking forward to not only main eventing SummerSlam but stealing the whole weekend.”

This is the first time SummerSlam has ever been a two-night event. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is hosting the show this Saturday and Sunday, with John Cena and Cody Rhodes’ street fight for the Undisputed WWE Championship expected to headline night two.

Punk had huge praise for Gunther ahead of SummerSlam, telling Good Guy/Bad Guy that he sees Gunther as someone who could have been a star in any era.

“Gunther’s a guy that I feel I’m super excited to get in the ring with. Like, you said it, he’s on fire. This dude is the best wrestler in the world. He’s got the gold to prove it, too,” Punk said. “Just everything about him is a throwback. I think he’s refreshing. I think he’s real. He had me speechless the one Monday, and I’m almost speechless now trying to explain how excited I am to get in there with him, you know, because he’s a guy who represents the business to me.

“He’s a guy who represents the current business, and you could take him and you could drop him into a territory in the 60s and he would thrive. You could put him in, you know, Madison Square Garden in the 70s across from Bruno or whatever and he would thrive. So he transcends decades to me. He’s one of the best right now.”

If Punk defeats Gunther, he’ll win his first WWE gold in more than a decade. His last WWE Championship reign lasted from November 2011 through January 2013.

SummerSlam will stream live on Peacock in the United States and Netflix elsewhere. Each night has a start time of 6 p.m. Eastern.

Update on Drew McIntyre’s WWE SummerSlam status

Drew McIntyre has an update on his WWE SummerSlam status.

In a social media post Wednesday night, McIntyre revealed that his passport issue has been resolved, and that he will in fact team with Logan Paul against Jelly Roll and Randy Orton on night one of the event.

In his video post, McIntyre first took kayfabe shots at anyone texting or messaging him regarding his being stuck in the United Kingdom due to a passport snafu as only looking for information to leak. He then ripped The Miz for offering to take his spot in Saturday’s tag team match, calling him “Mike Mizark” and “Missionary Mike,” before revealing that he was training alongside Paul.

McIntyre credited Paul for having more powerful friends than Jelly Roll in helping to clear up his passport issue and getting him back into the United States ahead of this weekend.

“Come Saturday, you and Randy Orton are screwed,” McIntyre said.

WWE SummerSlam takes place this Saturday and Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern time, with three-hour pre-shows set for both days at 3 p.m. Eastern time.

The Miz wants to replace Drew McIntyre at WWE SummerSlam

If there’s an opening on the WWE SummerSlam card, The Miz wants to be the person to take it.

The Miz cut an Instagram promo today saying that, with Drew McIntyre’s status for SummerSlam in question, he wants to team with Logan Paul at the PLE instead. McIntyre & Paul are currently scheduled to face Randy Orton & Jelly Roll at SummerSlam night one this Saturday, but McIntyre says he stuck in the United Kingdom due to passport issues and might not be able to make it.

“If Drew is out. I want in,” Miz wrote in the caption for his Instagram post.

Back at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, Miz teamed with Paul in what was Paul’s first-ever pro wrestling match. Jelly Roll — a country music star — is now making his debut on Saturday as he becomes the latest celebrity to crossover from being a fan to competing in a WWE ring.

Miz applauded Jelly Roll for how hard he’s worked preparing for his debut, but Miz said there’s a difference between dreaming of being a wrestler and living the reality of it every day.

“This isn’t a bucket list, this is my life,” Miz said. “And I’m sick of waiting for my moment.”

There has been no official announcement by WWE yet regarding McIntyre’s status for SummerSlam or if Miz will be replacing him. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is hosting the two-night event this Saturday and Sunday. Both nights have a start time of 6 p.m. Eastern airing live on Peacock in the United States and Netflix elsewhere.

A chaotic brawl broke out between the six teams following a Wyatt Sicks vs. Andrade and Rey Fenix title match in the SmackDown main event, leading to GM Nick Aldis announcing the TLC bout. It was not specified which night of SummerSlam the TLC match will take place on.

WWE reveals cards for both nights of SummerSlam

We now know the match breakdown for both nights of WWE SummerSlam 2025.

For the first time ever, SummerSlam is a two-night event this year. It’s taking place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 with each night having a start time of 6 p.m. Eastern. The event will stream live on Peacock in the United States and Netflix elsewhere.

WWE aired a match reveal special on YouTube today breaking down both the Saturday and Sunday cards. A new match was added, with rivals Sami Zayn and Karrion Kross set to face off on night one.

The night one card currently has six matches while the second has five, so it appears that one more match could be added soon. The full lineups can be seen below (note: WWE has not announced the exact match order or what the main events will be):

WWE SummerSlam 2025 —

Night one (Saturday, August 2):

  • Women’s Tag Team Champions Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez defend against Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
  • World Heavyweight Champion Gunther defends against CM Punk

New WWE SummerSlam match confirmed, new stipulation set

A new Intercontinental title match is official for WWE SummerSlam, and the other IC title bout on the show has a new set of stipulations.

After being postponed for several weeks due to an injury to Dominik Mysterio, AJ Styles will finally get his shot at the WWE Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam set for August 2 and August 3.

A storyline has played out on WWE programming with Mysterio ducking Styles, while Styles has persistently confronted Mysterio in a series of backstage angles to pressure him into defending the title. That came to a head on Monday’s Raw show where GM Adam Pearce made certain that Mysterio was medically cleared, and announced that Styles will get his shot at SummerSlam.

The Women’s IC title will also be on the line at SummerSlam with Becky Lynch defending against Lyra Valkyria, and that contest now has new stipulations attached.

In an in-ring promo segment on Raw, Lynch proposed a stipulation where Valkyria can never challenge for the title again as long as Lynch holds it should Valkyria lose at SummerSlam. Valkyria agreed to the stip, but only if Lynch would agree to a no countout, no DQ matchup, which Lynch begrudgingly accepted.

The updated card for the first-ever two-night SummerSlam:

WWE SummerSlam, Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 —

  • Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena defends against Cody Rhodes in a street fight
  • World Heavyweight Champion Gunther defends against CM Punk
  • Randy Orton and Jelly Roll vs. Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul
  • WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton defends against Jade Cargill
  • Women’s World Champion Naomi defends against IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat
  • Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio defends against AJ Styles
  • Women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch defends against Lyra Valkyria in a no DQ, no countout match in Valkyria’s last chance to challenge Lynch for the title
  • United States Champion Solo Sikoa defends against Jacob Fatu in a steel cage match
  • Women’s Tag Team Champions Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez defend against Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss
